Another year has almost passed, and it’s time to summarize. 2010 has been one of the most, if not the most eventful year ever. It started with me moving to Los Angeles in january, where I stayed until late august. Shortly after I got back home, to my new apartment in Hornstull, I secured a full-time position at one of Sweden’s highest regarded web agencies, Deasign. I’m pretty happy with how things turned out, and I look forward to see what 2011 has in store for me.

A good way to summarize is to make lists. Since we have the technological wonder of Spotify nowadays, making and sharing music lists are way easier than it used to be. Mix tapes in all their glory, sure, but this is far more convenient. Therefore, I give you My Favorite 100 Songs Released in 2010

2010 was actually a great year in music and I was both constrained by Spotify’s supply, and I might also have forgotten more than one song, just because there were so many to keep track of. Not to mention all the remixes!

So… Did I forget any obvious songs? Did I leave out your favorite? Let me know!

Every now and then I run into a band that takes me back to my high school years, when I was just discovering punk, hardcore, emo, post-rock, etc… back in the days when the music available online was very limited, and where you still listened to bands depending on what record label they were on. Bands like Refused, Randy, Texas Is the Reason and Propagandhi almost singlehandedly established the foundation for that section of my music taste.

The strange thing about the noisier part of my taste in music, is that I don’t really search actively for new music within these genres. Not in the same way I look for indie and electronic music. No, the heavier stuff mostly happens by chance, and every time I get the same sensation of “Holy shit, why don’t I listen to this stuff more often?”

The same thing happened today, when I put on Japandroids excellent debut album from 2009, Post-Nothing. It’s not the first time I listen to the album, but yet it feels like there’s something entirely different to it today. And it’s probably my suppressed need for distorted guitars that haven’t been satisfied in a long time, that’s finally getting some fuel. This music is probably not for everyone, but to me it’s the kind that makes me want to run full speed for hours.

My girlfriend came down with a cold last week. After a few days I was still uncontaminated, and I started mentally bragging to myself on what a remarkably strong immune system I have, and what an awesome human with awesome genes I am. Before I could even say the word “jinx”, the cold hit me hard, and I’ve been under the weather since… for about 5 days now. It’s finally starting to lighten up (knock on wood), so I might even go outside tomorrow. At least I’ve been getting a lot of work done. As the old swedish proverb teaches us, “Nothing bad happens that doesn’t bring anything good with it”. How strange it sounds in english.

I finally got my degree from Hyper Island, a few months late since my internship period in the States was prolonged. I’ve also been working day and night to complete my new portfolio, and updating it with new work. It’s almost ready, just some boring stuff left to do that I’m trying to muster the strength to complete. While doing this, I’m also trying to find a suitable place to work here in Stockholm, and also grabbing whatever freelance I can get in the meantime. Any suggestions on where I should apply for work?

Last week I went north to my hometown Luleå, which I hadn’t visited for over a year. I stayed at my mom’s place, enjoyed her cooking and played with our dog for 4 days. It was nice to go home for a short while, to see that most things are the same as I left them, with a few minor additions and deductions to the cityscape. I also went to the neighbouring town Piteå, to visit my grandparents. Going there on a perfect autumn day, with the leaves barely hanging on to the branches, it was a lovely drive. I took some pictures from the car while driving, to my mothers great displeasure. “Keep your eyes on the road!” she kept yelling, scaring me almost enough to actually drive off the road. It’s good to know some things never change.

Determined not to let the ticket I got issued last week ruin my vacation, I went to the courthouse Downtown on tuesday to give them a piece of my mind. We came there about an hour before closing time, and we were greeted by a line of about 300 people just waiting to get inside. By the time we got close to the door, about half an hour before closing time, the cops outside decided to not let any more people inside. Since we took the bus to get there, about an hour and a halfs ride, this of course was incredibly discouraging. However, they gave everyone who was still in line a permission slip to get ahead of the line if they appeared before 9.30 within 2 days. So, we had little choice but to turn around and come back the following morning.

Next day. We get up horribly early and get on the bus to Downtown again. We get ahead of the line as promised (well, there was another line of people who were supposed to get ahead of the line..) and we get inside. Well inside we meet a friendly Sheriff who had a look at my ticket and noticed that I was leaving the country shortly. He was kind enough to get me the court appointment the same day because of the circumstances, usually you have to wait several weeks for an appointment. He also told me that the LAPD constantly gives out these tickets since the city needs the money, and that many people just pay it without contest, just to not have to deal with the hassle of going to court…

I wasn’t going to give up that easily though, I was well prepared, determined to prove my innocence and had a ton of documents to back it up. A couple of hours later, it was time to appear in front of a judge.

I was sent to a hallway where I had to wait to be let inside the courtroom, along with maybe 200 other people. Well inside, an officer read us our rights and informed us on the court procedure. It wasn’t at all intimidating. Of course, my case was the third last case to be heard, so I had to sit for nearly 2 hours, just waiting. But it was both interesting and informative, since I got a good idea of what fines were given out for specific violations, under what circumstances they were reduced, etc.

One thing that was especially surprising, was how unprepared the rest of the people in court were before appearing before the judge. People didn’t bring their tickets, their ID:s, nothing, and everyone just seemed either defiant or just apathetic.

Something that on the other hand sadly wasn’t surprising at all, was the ethnic uniformity of the people charged. There was not a single white person in the building, except for the cops and the court employees. I mean, how the hell is it that even in this day and age, that people are so obviously discriminated? I’m glad the Sheriff I mentioned earlier was so polite and helpful. Because of that, I still can’t say that there aren’t any good cops…

Anyways, at long last it was my time to face the judge. It was a blonde woman in her late forties, with a sympathetic look, but she also gave the impression of it being her first day on the job, constantly asking her secretary questions and not being able to fully interpret the papers in front of her. She probably wasn’t used to traffic court. “Is this good or bad?”

She started by asking me the strangest question, she asked why I had presented “these documents” (passport, visa, drivers licence, proof of residence, flight ticket) to her. Well, since the charge was driving without a valid licence, I thought it was pretty obvious that I wanted to prove I had a valid license, and that the charges were total bullshit. She tried telling me that I needed to have a IDP (International Driving Permit) even though I didn’t. I was prepared for this, I had a stamped printout from the DMV with highlighted text clearly stating that wasn’t the case at all. I offered to show them to her, but then a funny thing happened.

I don’t remember what she said literally, but it was something similar to “I see that you have a lot of documents here, therefore I am going to dismiss all charges”. That’s just hillarious. I was totally unable to hide my smug sense of self-satisfaction, so I just said to her with a big smile “Thank you”, turned around and walked out as a free man.

Take THAT, ‘Muurrrka!!!
