Hypnotist controls the subject
b. There is loss of willpower for the subject
c. Can't think clearly when in a trance
d. It is sleep
e. Hypnosis experience is the same for everyone
f. It is like stage hypnosis

Of course, these are the misleading facts about hypnosis.

The right definition of hypnosis is that it occurs somewhere in-between the conscious and unconscious state (Alpha) whereby our mind is particularly alert and receptive to the environment. Our sensory becomes sharper than when in wakeful state. Our mind is clear about what we are doing. Hence, suggestions that are input into out mind at this alpha state is met with little resistance.

The following are some considerations that help a hypnotist to assess the suitability of a person to be hypnotized:-
- Can follow instructions
- Can imagine
- Not too young (above 6 yrs old) or else they can't concentrate well
- Not too old (below 75 yrs old) or else they can't concentrate well
- Hypnotise for everday issues eg. stress, concentration, anxiety and not for some medical reason like cancer etc, though hypnosis can be used to heal illness but it is still not in the mainstream. We used it as a complementary to doctor's treatment.

Some people might have a wrong impression that when a person is being hypnotised and is not guided to emerge out of hypnosis, he will be permanently in a trance. This is not so because there are a couple of things that can easily break a person from hypnotic trance(or emerge him from hypnosis), things like loud noise; snap of our fingers; shaking up the person; instructing him to follow from 1 to 5 as the standard way of emerging from hypnosis etc.

We enter into a hypnotic state when we are either tired or our mind and body are relaxed or resting comfortably. It is difficult to hypnotize someone when he has just had a workout or experiencing emotional upheaval or especially alert like having taken stimulant such as coffee or tea. Thus, we enter into hypnotic state very often - common in our daily life as everyone experiences it.

It is not precise as to why the subject being hypnotized response to the hypnotist’s suggestions while on stage. One reason could be due to the altered state of consciousness (from normal wakeful awareness into alpha state of mind). Another reason is a conspiracy between the hypnotist and the “chosen” audience to deceive the masses. The third reason is most probable - a psychological factor of compliance and peer pressure since the subject is in front of large audience, subconsciously he would choose to co-operate with the hypnotist. Stage hypnosis performances of today is more about entertainment but is also meant to demonstrate the unknown power of our deeper mind.

It is self-induced and makes use of self-suggestion. Self-hypnosis is not complicated and a person does not need to have a certification to do self-hypnosis. The very fact that we are experiencing hypnosis on a daily basis tells us that hypnosis is not something about losing our mind or not being able to control our mind. Thus self-hypnosis is simple and is safe to self-administer once we knew about it and follow the few simple steps. You can awaken yourself easily even in self-hypnosis where there is no one supervising you.
