Most
of us spend significant amounts of time and money on training,
advertising and promoting our practices in the hope that these
investments will turn into clients. How frustrating, and costly, is it
to then unexpectedly lose those same clients?

Why do some clients suddenly stop coming without explanation?

Why do some clients do their homework and others not?

Why are your internal (and sometimes external) responses to some clients really positive and others really negative?

Why are some clients emotional and others extremely rational?

How
can you quickly identify whether your client will respond best to
cognitive and analytical methods such as CBT or to traditional
hypnotherapy?

Discover answers to all the questions listed above.

Learn to quickly recognise different attachment patterns in the first few minutes of your initial consultation.

Learn
to recognise and address potential difficulties that may arise with
each client so that you can respond promptly and appropriately.

Learn
how incorporating this knowledge within your practice will help you to
easily retain clients and increase your success rates.

I initially became
interested in the subject of attachment whilst attending a counselling
course. Initially, the information explained so much about my own
patterns that it blew me away. Going on to apply this knowledge to my
hypnotherapy practice has made a remarkable difference. It has
significantly increased my success rate, thereby decreasing the amount I
needed to spend on advertising. I know that others will also find it
equally beneficial.

is a reminder to encourage colleagues, patients, and friends who are
interested in knowing more about a psychoanalytic approach to therapy,
to work, and to life to join a group in reading and discussing the
literature in the relatively new, and very popular, Fundamental
Psychoanalytic Perspectives Program (FPP).

All
our classes are taught by analysts from our Institute, and cover a wide
range of topics in 24 weekly Thursday evening seminars. Freud is read
in the original, and there are classes on object relations, self
psychology, depression, anxiety, the defenses, and attachment theory, to
name a few. It is the perfect way to get an introduction to these
theories of psychoanalysis.

Since
this is not a training program, classes usually consist of an
interesting mix of professions: clinical people (about 50%), lawyers,
artists, computer people, and academics, which makes for extremely
lively, open, and interesting discussion. The educational requirement
for entry into the Program is a Masters degree, or other professional
degree. Personal therapy is, of course, an asset. All applicants will
be interviewed by a member of the Committee.

If you can't nod off then your brain could be to blame! Scientists discover why some people just can't be hypnotised

Those with a high attention span do better

But people with precise habits and a judgmental nature tend to struggle

UPDATED:

It is certainly one of the more
mysterious medical treatments. But one question has always remained: why
can some people be hypnotised and others can’t?
The answer, it seems, may well lie with our decision-making ability.
Scientists at Stanford University in the
U.S. have discovered that people susceptible to hypnosis find it easier
to make decisions and have better attention spans.

Quick thinkers: People who are easily hypnotised are better at decision making and concentrating

On the other hand, those who are precise in their habits and make judgements quickly are less likely to succumb.
The study was published in the October issue of Archives of General Psychiatry.
Hypnosis is described as a trance-like state during which a person has a heightened focus and concentration.

It has been used to help manage pain, control anxiety and combat phobias.
It’s also increasingly being used to reduce conditions linked to stress, such as irritable bowel syndrome.
But Dr David Spiegel, who led the research, says up to a quarter of people he sees cannot be hypnotised.
To try and establish why, he scanned 12 people who were susceptible to hypnosis and 12 who were not.

Hypnosis: Performed by Derren Brown, it has been used to help manage pain and control stress

Dr Spiegel and his colleagues found no differences between the typical structures of the two groups' brains.
But
when they looked at the subjects' brains at rest, they noticed the
brains of the easily hypnotised people behaved differently: they were
most active in areas that decide what to focus on.
Dr
Spiegal told the Los Angeles Times: ‘The highly hypnotisable are people
who can readily immerse themselves in thinking about things without
having their attention interrupted by pesky reminders of reality or of
competing cognitive demands.
'They can harness their minds to imagine something about themselves - and make it so.’

In everyday life, says Dr. Spiegel, these high hypnotisable people are notably different than their less hynotisable peers.
‘They get side-tracked by sunsets and
lost in movies; they tend to show up three hours late for things because
they lost track of time.'
By
contrast, those who are resistant to hypnosis tend to be more
judgmental, fastidious in their habits and less trusting of people.
The
researchers looked at the activity of three different networks in the
brain: the default-mode network, used when the brain is idle; the
executive-control network, which is involved in making decisions; and
the salience network, which is involved in prioritising.
Both
groups had an active default-mode network, but people who could be
easily hypnotised had more activity between the decision-making and
prioritising networks.
They also had more activation between an important control region of the brain and the area involved in focusing attention.
In people who struggled to be hypnotised there was little connectivity between these two regions.
Dr Spiegal said the results came close to finding a ‘brain signature’ which reveals who can and cannot be hypnotised.
The
hope is to use this to shed light on how hypnosis could be more widely
used to combat pain, ease stress and overcome phobias.

One condition that hypnosis has been shown to significantly improve the symptoms of is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
The
condition is thought to affect one in five people and is characterised
by symptoms such as constipation, diarrhoea, painful cramping, bloating
and flatulence.
Gut-directed
hypnotherapy was pioneered by IBS expert Peter Whorwell, professor of
medicine and gastroenterology at the University of Manchester.
It’s
not a cure, but eight out of ten patients say they feel 80 per cent
better, and can control their symptoms more by using this technique to
relax the muscles of the gut.
Patients
are hypnotised into a deeply relaxed state and asked to place their
hand on their stomach and generate feelings of warmth and comfort.
The
therapist then suggests that patients use this action to create
similar feelings of comfort when they feel symptoms coming on in the
future.
Patients are given an audio recording to use daily to reinforce the positive suggestions.

About the Analyst Training Programme

The ONTARIO ASSOCIATION OF JUNGIAN ANALYSTS (OAJA) is a non-profit corporation devoted to furthering an understanding of analytical psychology as developed by C.G. Jung. OAJA was admitted to group membership in the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP) at the Eleventh International Congress of the IAAP in 1989. Group membership authorizes OAJA to train acceptable candidates to become Jungian analysts, who subsequently are accredited by the IAAP.
Applications for admission to the programme in September 2012 will be accepted until January 1, 2012. Early application is advised.
The length of the OAJA training programme is a minimum of eight semesters, in two stages. Stage One (minimum four semesters) will offer instruction designed to prepare candidates for examinations prior to advancing to Stage Two. Stage Two (minimum four semesters) will provide for continuing instruction, client work, case supervision, and case colloquia.
Upon successful completion of the programme, a Diploma in Analytical Psychology will be awarded, certifying that the recipient is deemed capable of working as a Jungian analyst. After the graduate has submited an application for membership to the Ontario Association of Jungian Analysts and it has been approved, membership in the International Association for Analytical Psychology is conferred.
Overall, the training programme will be comprised of three major components:

On-going personal analysis, the indispensable core of training, which supports the candidate's maturation and facilitates the individual's relationship with the psyche;

The acquisition of a comprehensive body of theoretical and academic subject matter which is necessary to work effectively as a Jungian analyst;

Supervision of the candidate's analytic and therapeutic work with clients.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Since only well-qualified applicants can be considered for admission, a careful screening and selection process is necessary. This will put particular emphasis on life-experience and personal qualities.
Pre-requisites for application:

Analysis: At least 100 hours of personal Jungian analysis with an IAAP member by January 1, 2012, minimum 25 hours in the past year (exceptions considered, but first contact the Registrar for further information).

Education: A graduate degree or equivalent.

Age: 30 minimum (exceptional cases considered, contact the Registrar for further information). Note: Candidates in other IAAP training programmes cannot be considered at this time.

Applicants must send the following (with documents in quadruplicate) to the Registrar:

Verification of analytic hours.

Transcripts of education (1 original, 3 copies).

Three sealed letters of reference (not from personal analyst or member of OAJA).

A statement of life history, including applicant's interest in analytical psychology (max. 10 pages, double-spaced).

Completed Application Form (see below, or available from OAJA office).

Application fee of $250 (non-refundable).

Note: Applicants accepted as candidates will be required to have 150 hours of face-to-face analysis during Stage One before acceptance to Stage Two. All 150 hours must be with a member of OAJA. Submit applications before January 1, 2012, to:
The Existence of a Hypnotic State Revealed by Eye Movements

Hypnosis has had a long and controversial history in psychology, psychiatry and neurology, but the basic nature of hypnotic phenomena still remains unclear. Different theoretical approaches disagree as to whether or not hypnosis may involve an altered mental state. So far, a hypnotic state has never been convincingly demonstrated, if the criteria for the state are that it involves some objectively measurable and replicable behavioural or physiological phenomena that cannot be faked or simulated by non-hypnotized control subjects. We present a detailed case study of a highly hypnotizable subject who reliably shows a range of changes in both automatic and volitional eye movements when given a hypnotic induction. These changes correspond well with the phenomenon referred to as the “trance stare” in the hypnosis literature. Our results show that this ‘trance stare’ is associated with large and objective changes in the optokinetic reflex, the pupillary reflex and programming a saccade to a single target. Control subjects could not imitate these changes voluntarily. For the majority of people, hypnotic induction brings about states resembling normal focused attention or mental imagery. Our data nevertheless highlight that in some cases hypnosis may involve a special state, which qualitatively differs from the normal state of consciousness.
