Are A Stage Hypnotist!

One of the worries that many hypnotherapy clients have when they come for hypnosis for the first time, is that once in a hypnotic trance they will not be able to return to their full awareness and somehow stay 'stuck' in the trance state. This would never happen as the hypnotised client would be more likely to fall asleep and then wake naturally, or if there was an emergency such as an alarm going off, they would be able to bring themselves back to full awareness pretty quickly.

But if you volunteer to join in a show given by a stage hypnotist, you do not expect to be left in the hypnotic trance. So imagine what it was like for three participants in stage hypnotist David Days show when he tripped over one of their legs on stage and knocked himself out. He had just given the three hypnotised volunteers on stage the suggestion that they were Martians, before he had his unfortunate accident.

The stage crew who rushed to help David Days, were unable to bring him round, so the Emergency Services were called and the auditorium emptied. Luckily for the three 'Martians', Days did eventually come around while still at the venue and was able to emerge his hapless volunteers from their hypnotic trance. and rescue them from the Red Planet!

Afterwards the participants who had been hypnotised said that they had been aware of the drama unfolding around them, but because they were comfortably in the hypnotic trance they just did not feel like moving. Apparently Days did have a voice recording with him to emerge people out of the trance in case of emergency, and luckily Days did not need to go to hospital for treatment and escaped with a just a few bruises!

The aim of the trial is to give women greater ability to manage their labour, with the courses lasting several hours and teaching the expectant mothers to enter a state of deep calm and relaxtion. The participants will also be taught to massage themselves to stimulate the release of endorphins, which are a natural painkillers released by the body, and also learn to replace words like 'contraction' and 'pain' with more neutral terms.

Drugs used during labour are expensive and also thought to be potentially dangerous for the mother and the baby, and it is also hoped that with the self-hypnosis helping to control pain, there may be a reduced need for supervision by a midwife during the labour, which will help to ease the pressure on busy maternity wards.

According to this newspaper article, people are ten times more likely to be depressed now than they would have been in 1945, with women and adolescent girls being twice as likely to suffer from depression than men. Experts predict that if the rates of depression continue growing at the current rates, that by 2020 depression will be one of the most disabling conditions in the world, only being beaten by heart disease.

So why are the women of today more unhappy than their mothers and grandmothers? Is it all down to chemical imbalances in the brain, or are the ways we live our lives today innately more stressful, although physically less demanding? Humans evolved as social primates, so we have a need to live in a community and interact with other humans. Is this great wave of depression partially caused by the fact that so many more of us live alone or in small family units, sometimes hundreds of miles away from our extended families?

Or is this increase in depression down to the raising of expectations? Our mothers and grandmothers never expected to have it all. They were happy if there was money coming into the house and everyone in the family was healthy and either working or getting an education. We are perhaps the first generation of women who have been brought up to think that we could have it all and, crucially, have it all with no effort and always looking like a supermodel. So modern women juggle high-powered jobs with housework, child care, their relationship with their partner, friends, hobbies and caring for elderly parents. In the media, they are constantly being presented with images of 'A' List women floating around looking gorgeous, holding down glamorous jobs, with designer-clad cute kids, and are given the message that this is the way a modern woman should be.

With the pressure on to always be happy, successful and looking good, is it any wonder that so many women today are beginning to unravel? So is the current epidemic of depression really down to chemicals in the brain going haywire or a sign that there is really something wrong at the heart of Western society?

It is believed that this is because handling cash boosts our feelings of self-importance and self-esteem, and it has been proven in earlier studies that someone is more able to deal with pain if they have a high sense of self worth.

US scientists have shown that memories are embedded in the brain in a certain stage of sleep and that sleep is needed to clear out the brain's short term memory storage and create space for new information to enter. A recent study undertaken by the University of California at Berkeley shows that sleep not only cures a person of any effects of prolonged wakefulness, but also at a neurocognitive level moves you on beyond where you were before you slept.

It seems that studies that commend the use of nicotine replacement therapies are more likely to have been funded by the drug companies than other studies. The Australian research team also stated that governments were also involved in the medicalising of quitting smoking and implying that giving up smoking is harder than it actually is. The review of the studies showed that between two-thirds to three-quarters of ex-smokers had given up without using stopping smoking aids and that they had found it easier than expected.

Other experts have disagreed with this research and say that the studies on nicotine patches and nicotine gum had been robust and that relying on willpower alone to quit smoking was not particularly successful.

In general, they found that the longer people spent online the more depressed people tended to be. One of the reasons put forward for the internet addiction was that surfing the net was a substitute for more normal social activities. Although the research proved that there was a correlation between internet addiction and depression, the researchers don't know which comes first. Does the depression occur due to the amount of time spent on the net, or are depressed people more likely to spend hours internet surfing?
The admission came out during a BBC Radio Five interview where he was asked by a listener if there was a way to get his wife to like sport.

McKenna said that he 'hated himself' for manipulating the girlfriend, and went on to describe the technique he had used to get her to start eating Indian food and eventually liking it. The technique involved talking about curry when he knew she was hungry and the touching her on the shoulder to create an association over a period of a few weeks.

It is believed that around half the population in industrialised countries have a magnesium deficit that increases with age. This magnesium deficit could contribute to age-related memory decline, so taking a magnesium supplement could reduce the effects of this decline or even prevent it. Foods that contain magnesium include nuts, pulses, avocado, halibut, spinach, brown rice and milk products.

This challenges the belief of sceptics who say that hypnotic trance is not a biological function, but simply a case of some people being more susceptible and willing to act out the trance. However, the recent research suggests that during hypnosis there is actually less connectivity between different regions of the brain and a decrease of activity in the rational, left side of the brain and an increase of activity in the more creative right side.

Naish's tests suggested a successful hypnotic trance required temporary domination by the brain's right side, which might be easier to bring about in people who tended to have an imbalance between the two spheres of their brain even when they are not in the trance.

A study on pensioners showed that after twelve weeks of drinking daily blueberry juice they fared up to 40% better on memory tests. They were also 33% better at memorising lists and did better than pensioners who were drinking grape juice. Researchers at the University of Cincinnati put the improvements down to compounds found in the blueberry called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are responsible for the deep, bluey-purple colour of the fruit and always help to protect against other conditions such as cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's and diabetes.

PTSD is caused by being involved in or witnessing traumatic events such as natural disasters, wars or violent crime and can cause distressing symptoms such as flashbacks, anger, general nervousness and nightmares that can drag on for many years.
It has been believed that there is no link between a person's stress levels and heart conditions, but researchers at University College London have conducted a trial that proves for the first time that stressed people are more likely to suffer from heart disease.

The researchers conducted tests on 514 people with an average age of 62 and those people who got stressed by the tests were more likely to have furring and narrowing of the arteries than those who remained calm.

The survey showed that high levels of bisphenol A found in urine samples was associated with heart disease. The analysis also showed that the chemical had links to diabetes and some forms of liver disease. US environmental health advocay groups are calling for a federal ban on bisphenol A. Canada is planning to outlaw plastic baby bottles containing the chemical and the British charity Breast Cancer UK is urging the UK Government to do the same as there is evidence that the chemical is linked to breast cancer.

One in four of the workers also believed that they were working longer hours due to the economic downturn. Yorkshire was said to be the most stressed region and younger workers were the more likely to be stressed.

Their research has shown that light exacerbates migraines because of a group of retina cells at the back of the eye. These photoreceptors send a signal to the brain along the optic nerve which stimulates the migraine pain neurons. This means that any amount of light causes pain and ensures that the migraine sufferer seeks out a dark room.

Helmut Kichmeier, aged 27 and stage name Hannibal Helmurt, was practising for his sword-swallowing act at the 'Circus of Horrors' when he put himself into a hypnotic trance at 10am and was not found by his wife until 3pm. It wasn't until his teacher, Dr Ray Roberts, talked to him on the phone, that he was able to come out of the trance.

His intention was to learn to go into a trance on the stage in order to be able to swallow multiple swords at one time.

Scientists working with mice have cured them of Alzheimer's by exposing them to the electromagnetic waves produced by mobile phones. The electromagnetic waves erased sticky deposits of a harmful protein in the brains of the mice and the memory and cognitive levels of the mice returned to normal.

The US researchers believe that this discovery could lead to an effective, drug-free way to treat and prevent Alzheimers.
