</em>Legendary Folk Singer-songwriter Judy Collins won a Grammy Award, Best Folk Performance or Folk Recording,
"Both Sides, Now" in 1968. She is world renowned for her social activism.<em>

</em></pre>
<div id="attachment_197" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 160px"><a href="http://www.inacoustic.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/JudyCollins2.jpg"><img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-197" title="Judy Collins" src="http://www.inacoustic.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/JudyCollins2-150x150.jpg" alt="Judy Collins, singer-songwriter" width="150" height="150" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Judy Collins, singer-songwriter</p></div>
<pre><strong>Q. What did you learn about yourself from writing this memoir?</strong></pre>
<pre>A. That I could, that I could see it through. It’s much easier to write the book than
to have it published. I’ll tell you a secret: I wanted to call the book “Sweet Judy
Blue Eyes: Sex, Drugs, Rock ’n’ Roll, and the Music that Changed a Generation.’’ It
got shot down, and I couldn’t fight it. They wanted “Sweet Judy Blue Eyes: My Life in
Music.’’ When I finally directly asked my editor about it, he said, “I didn’t tell you
this, but when we proposed to the salespeople what this book was going to be, they did
not like that title.’’ And I said, “Why?’’ And he said, “They don’t see you that way.’’
Well, I guess I blew their illusions! (Laughs.) That was my point.

<strong>Q. Do you think people have the wrong idea about you?</strong>

A. I said it in one of the opening scenes where Janis Joplin and I were sitting together. People expected her to
crash and burn; they expected something totally different from me. So I think [my editor] is probably right. I
do want to get it in that my vote was for “Sex, Drugs, Rock ’n’ Roll, and the Music That Changed a Generation.’’</pre>
<pre><strong>Q. Did you ever struggle with not romanticizing the ’60s?</strong>

A. No, because the specifics were so interesting, but the harrowing life I led as an active alcoholic kept that
in perspective. Although the title may be misleading to some people, the facts are that that was a very rough
time for me. I don’t think there’s any way to romanticize it, nor do I think there’s any way to separate it
from the social upheaval that was going on around us. Whether or not we remember well enough - and we obviously
don’t - what the Vietnam War was about, I remember it and so does everybody that lived through it.</pre>
<pre><strong> Q. Do you see the spirit of the ’60s in the Occupy Wall Street protests?</strong>

A. You bet. And if I wasn’t on the road all the time, I’d be down there with them. Everywhere I go there are these
wonderful protests going on. I think it’s just phenomenal. It’s exactly what was intended. I thought people had
forgotten what kind of power they have. And I see now that we have that power.</pre>
<pre><strong> Q. At more than 300 pages, it has a nice heft, but what did you leave out of the book?</strong>

A. I think it came down to about 95,000 words, but it went out at 120,000. (Laughs) There were a lot of things
I didn’t get to keep in that book. I did not talk much about anything post-1978.</pre>
<pre><strong> Q. For a Boston readership, you have some great passages about New England. Do you have a lingering relationship with this part of the country?</strong>

A. Oh, absolutely. You’ve been one of the foundations of my fan base. The East Coast, I could
probably spend my life touring here and never have to go to Paris and London, which I did last week.</pre>

<div id="_mcePaste">Acoustic songs have been associated with the early days of folk music, but the stripped-down sound, without electric guitars, tends to go hand-in-hand with songwriting. Here is the list of the Top 10 Acoustic songs.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">10. “More Than Words” – Extreme</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">&#8220;More Than Words&#8221; is a ballad written and originally performed by the rock band Extreme. It is built around acoustic guitar work by Nuno Bettencourt and the vocals of Gary Cherone (with harmony vocals from Bettencourt). Released in 1990 on the album Extreme II: Pornograffiti, the song marked a departure from the funk metal that had permeated the band&#8217;s style previous to its release.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">9. “Angie” &#8211; The Rolling Stones</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">&#8220;Angie&#8221; is a song by rock and roll band The Rolling Stones, featured on their 1973 album Goats Head Soup. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and recorded in November and December 1972, &#8220;Angie&#8221; is an acoustic guitar driven ballad which tells of the end of a romance.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">8. “Going to California” &#8211; Led Zeppelin</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Robert Plant and Jimmy Page supposedly wrote the folk sounding &#8216;Going to California&#8217; partly about Joni Mitchell, who was often cited as the inspiration for the lines, &#8220;To find a Queen without a King/They say she plays guitar and cries, and sings.&#8221; The song appeared on 1971&#8242;s &#8216;Led Zeppelin IV,&#8217; an album universally praised as one of the best rock albums ever.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">7. “Classical Gas” &#8211; Mason Williams</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">&#8220;Classical Gas&#8221; is the only intsrumental song on the list. This instrumental musical piece composed and originally performed by guitarist Mason Williams. Originally released in 1968 on the album The Mason Williams Phonograph Record, it has been re-recorded and re-released numerous times since by Williams. One later version served as the title track of a 1987 album by Williams and the orchestra Mannheim Steamroller. Williams re-recorded &#8220;Classical Gas&#8221; as a solo guitar piece on his 1970 album Handmade. In 1969, the piece won three Grammy Awards: Best Instrumental Composition, Best Contemporary-Pop Performance, Instrumental, and Best Instrumental Arrangement.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">6. “Tears in Heaven” – Eric Clapton</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">&#8220;Tears in Heaven&#8221; is a ballad written by guitar-god Eric Clapton and Will Jennings about the pain Clapton felt following the death of his four-year-old son, Conor, who fell from a window of the 53rd-floor New York apartment of his mother&#8217;s friend, on March 20, 1991.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">5. “I Will Remember You” &#8211; Sarah McLachlan</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">&#8220;I Will Remember You&#8221; is a song written by Sarah McLachlan, Séamus Egan and Dave Merenda (16th Annual USA Songwriting Competition winner). The song first appeared on the soundtrack to the movie The Brothers McMullen in 1995, and was featured on her remix album Rarities, B-Sides and Other Stuff. It became a hit when McLachlan released a live version of the song from her 1999 album Mirrorball placing at #14 in the US on July 20, 1999, after reaching the Top 40 on June 8. The song also earned McLachlan a Grammy Award in 1999.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">4. “Landslide” &#8211; Fleetwood Mac</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Stevie Nicks wrote Fleetwood Mac&#8217;s 1975 hit &#8216;Landslide&#8217; before joining the band, when she and guitarist boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham. &#8220;Landslide&#8221; is Billboard Hot 100 Top Ten hit song written by Stevie Nicks and performed by Fleetwood Mac. It was first featured on the band&#8217;s 1975 album Fleetwood Mac. It was released as a single 23 years later from the live reunion album The Dance. The country group Dixie Chicks then covered &#8220;Landslide&#8221; on their 2002 Home album. This rendition, featuring the group&#8217;s trademark two- and three-part harmonies reached the Top 10 of both the pop (#7) and country charts (#2) as well as several other charts. It became the Dixie Chicks&#8217; only #1 single (to date) on the adult contemporary chart. Lead singer Natalie Maines said she was attracted, in part, to the song because she was then the same age that Nicks was when she initially performed it.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">3. “Knockin&#8217; on Heaven&#8217;s Door” &#8211; Bob Dylan</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">This song is written and performed by Bob Dylan for the soundtrack of the 1973 film Pat Garrett &amp; Billy the Kid. It reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. This song has been covered by many music artists such as Eric Clapton, Guns N&#8217;Roses, Warren Zevon, U2, Babyface, Avril Lavigne, etc.</div>
<div>
<div id="attachment_174" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 160px"><a href="http://www.inacoustic.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/Adele.jpg"><img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-174" title="Adele" src="http://www.inacoustic.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/Adele-150x150.jpg" alt="Adele, singer-songwriter" width="150" height="150" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Adele, Singer-songwriter. Her song &quot;Someone Like You&quot; named one of the Top Acoustic songs ever recorded</p></div>
</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">2 “Someone Like You” &#8211; Adele</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">&#8220;Someone Like You&#8221; is a song by British singer-songwriter Adele. Written by Adele and Dan Wilson for her second studio album “21”, the song was inspired by a broken relationship of hers, and lyrically it speaks of Adele coming to terms with it. This song was performed and recorded with just piano and vocals in Adele&#8217;s home. This is also the first #1 hit in the Billboard Hot 100 Charts that is recorded with just piano and vocals, this song hit #1 in 2011, making this the newest song on the Top 10. Adele is also the first ever British female singer to spawn two consecutive number one singles from the same album.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">1. &#8220;Yesterday&#8221; &#8211; The Beatles</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">This popular Lennon &amp; McCartney song features McCartney playing an Epiphone Texan steel-string acoustic guitar backed by a string quartet in one of the Beatles&#8217; first use of session musicians, &#8220;Yesterday&#8221; has two contrasting sections, differing in melody and rhythm, producing a sense of disjunction. This song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts in 1965. At one time, Guinness World Records cited &#8220;Yesterday&#8221; with the most cover versions of any song ever written at 1,600.</div>

<p>Scottish-born Canadian, David Francey won top honors at the 7th Annual IAMA (International Acoustic Music Awards) by winning the overall grand prize as well as the first prize in the Folk category. David also won three Juno awards up to date. Francey also had the honour of receiving the prestigious SOCAN Folk Music Award.</p>
<p>David Francey was born in 1954 in Ayrshire, Scotland, where as a paper boy he got his first taste of the working life. He learned to read at an early age, and by age eleven was devouring the newspapers he delivered. This helped establish his interest in politics and world events while developing the social conscience that forms the backdrop of his songs.</p>
<p>He was twelve when his family immigrated to Toronto. He says he can trace his love of the land, the history, and the people of his adopted country to weekend family drives exploring southern Ontario. Music played a large part in these family outings. They sang traditional Scottish tunes as they drove through the Canadian countryside. Dad and sister Muriel sang melody, while mother and David sang harmonies. His website can be viewed at:</p>

Their songs have been recorded by Juice Newton, Tiffany, Lorrie Morgan, Sammy Kershaw, Andy Williams, Pat Boone and many more. Their style of music is similar to Loggins And Messina.<br />
<a href="http://www.fertittaandmcclintock.com/">www.fertittaandmcclintock.com</a></p>
<p>2. Liz Longley (6th Annual IAMA Top Winner)</p>
<p>Liz won the IAMA awards as a college student of Berklee Collge of music. She then went on to perform at the prestigious Newport Folk Festival. Her alluring vocals and heartfelt music and lyrics takes you on a journey like no other new artist can. This artist is going places.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.lizlongley.com/">http://www.lizlongley.com</a></p>
<p>3. Charlie Dore (4th Annual IAMA Top Winner)</p>
<p>Remember the hit song of the late 70’s/early 80’s “Pilot of the Airwaves”? Yes, it’s Charlie Dore, she since reinvented herself as a Folk Singer-songwriter and also written hit songs for big name artists such as Tina Turner, Celine Dion, George Harrison, Lisa Stansfield, Jimmy Nail, Sheena Easton and Hayley Westenra. Her soothing soprano voice goes well with lyrics of beautiful imagery in her song such as “Sleep All Day”. I wouldn’t be surprise if this British Artist hits the charts again.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.myspace.com/charliedoremusic">http://www.myspace.com/charliedoremusic</a></p>
<p>4. El McMeen (6th Annual IAMA, Best Instrumental)</p>
<p>Fingerstyle guitar virtuoso El McMeen clearly stands head and shoulders above other instrumentalists we have seen. His heartfelt solo acoustic steel string guitar works such as “Song For Sheila” and “Breakout” showcases his guitar chops as well as his knowledge of composition. His music is truly outstanding, heartfelt and spiritual. His music should do well on Sirius XM Spa Channel as well as Guitar Player Magazine and Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine. Even established acoustic guitarist out there would appreciate this artist. Watch out for this instrumentalist, he is going places!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.ElMcMeen.com/">http://www.ElMcMeen.com</a></p>
<p>5. The Refugees (5th Annual IAMA Top Winner)</p>
<p>The Refugees is a trio of Cindy Bullens, Deborah Holland, and Wendy Waldman in Americana/Folk genre. Their, passion, songwriting, musicianship, and impressive vocals set them apart from other groups out there. They have performed with Bonnie Raitt. All three members have are accomplished musicians in their own right: Wendy Waldman wrote Vanessa Williams’ #1 hit song “Save the Best for Last,” and “Heartbeat,” performed by Don Johnson and ‘Fishin’ in the Dark,’ sung by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Cindy Bullens got her start as a back-up singer for Elton John. Since then, Cindy has accompanied John on multiple tours and racked up Grammy Award nominations. Website: <a href="http://www.jenfoster.com/">www.jenfoster.com</a><br />

<a href="http://www.davidfrancey.com/">www.davidfrancey.com</a><br />
8. Jason Harwell (1st Annual IAMA Top Winner)</p>
<p>The youthfulness of John Mayer meets the guitar licks of the late George Harrison. Very original. Very fresh. VERY good! “Declaration Song” by Jason Harwell embodies the best of Americana. He captures the youthful longing for exploration conflicted with the fear of the unknown. And there are many more layers of meaning and symbolism in the clear, clean lyrics of this work. Jason has moved back to Georgia and started a record label “Rebuilt Records”. He also tours extensively.<br />
<a href="http://www.JasonHarwell.com/">www.JasonHarwell.com</a><br />

<div>The voice is the signature of a band. Over time songs will change, the musical style may even vary, but fans can always recognize their favorite bands by the lead singer’s sound. How to achieve a recorded vocal track that has much personality, punch and power as in a live performance is often the illusive “pot of gold at the end of the rainbow” sought after by many a producer. While there is much that goes into this, here are two pointers taken from my twenty-two years experience as a recording session vocal coach and thirty-three years teaching singers of all styles.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Art of Recording</span></strong></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Headset mix and mic choice make an incredible difference in how you perform and the ease with which you are able to sing (or not). Take the time to work with your engineer and get it adjusted at the beginning of the vocal session. Work on it until you have absolutely no attention on the mix and can perform undistracted. It is about how you, not the engineer, like the sound and volume in your headset. On occasion, the brand of headset can cause an alteration of the natural EQ (EQ: Equalization = deals with the balance or alteration of low, mid-range and high frequencies) of your voice making it sound thinner, bassier, or muffled. Try singing with several different brands of headsets. When you find one you like for its fit, weight and sound, you might buy one of your own and bring it to your sessions. Each mic treats sound differently. True for both studio and stage, the mic you use must be matched to your vocal characteristics. If not you can find yourself unconsciously manipulating throat muscles as you fight the tonal alterations made by the mic. Sometimes the problem is not the fault of the headset or mic but the result of incorrect or non-existent vocal warm-up and poor vocal technique leading to strain, pitchyness and lack of vocal ease. In this case, rushing into the studio before being ready reaps frustration, disappointment and wasted money.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste"><span style="color: #888888;"><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Song Delivery and Performance Skills</strong></span></span></span></div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Through your recorded track, you must attract your listener’s attention. Your voice and emotion must reach out through the recording and create an emotional effect. To achieve this, when you sing in the studio you must bring to your song the same energy and believability that your audience would expect of you in a live performance. This is also why I recommend that artists perform their material to live audiences prior to going into the studio. To help your song have presence and energy even though recorded in the more “sterile” environment of a studio, you must create the illusion of singing to someone. Don’t create mental image pictures of someone and sing to the person in your mind. That will diminish your energy and the vitality of the song as it removes you from the present. Sing the song as though the person is in front of you now. It is up to you, the singer, to integrate all the components of singing, performing and recording to reach through the track and connect and engage your listening audience.</div>

<p>Virtuoso Guitarist El McMeen performing his winning song &#8220;Le Mans&#8221; and talks about it. He won the Best Instrumental in the 6th Annual IAMA (International Acoustic Music Awards).  El McMeen clearly stands head and shoulders above other instrumentalists we have seen. His heartfelt solo acoustic steel string guitar works such as &#8220;Le Mans, “Song For Sheila” and “Breakout” showcases his guitar chops as well as his knowledge of composition.
