Ashlee Ray’s Second Book Goes Where the First One Couldn’t: Inside the Transits That Shaped Her Life

When Ashlee Ray published her first book, Manifest 22, she gave readers a 22-day framework for turning desire into reality. It was a roadmap built from her own experience — a woman who had climbed from foster care in Little Rock, Arkansas to the top of the media industry, then watched everything she built come apart, and found her way back through intention, ritual, and a faith in the alignment of things most people cannot see.

That book changed lives. It also left something unsaid.

This Is Not a Follow-Up. It’s a Reckoning.

The first book taught the system. This one lives inside it. The Transit Guidebook was written during one of the most disruptive astrological cycles of Ashlee’s life — the years Uranus moved through Taurus, dismantling the material foundations of her world. Ashlee did not write about this transit from the safety of the other side. She wrote it while her home dissolved, while her partnership ended, while her body broke down and rebuilt itself, while she carried roles she never trained for, while she fought to hold her family together.

She finished the book on April 25, 2026. The last day Uranus was in Taurus. The last day of the transit.

“I didn’t plan the date,” she says. “The sky did.”

What the Book Actually Does

The Manifest 22 Transit Guidebook does something most astrology books are afraid to do: it shows the whole chart. Not just the abundance placements, the lucky Jupiter transits, the favorable windows for manifestation. The whole thing. Including what the chart says about loss, about trauma, about the things that happened before you had language for them.

One of the teachings that has resonated most deeply with readers is Ashlee’s demonstration of how to find some of life’s heaviest experiences written into a natal chart. Widowhood. The loss of a child. Survival of sexual abuse. These are not things most astrology books teach. Ashlee teaches them because she believes the chart is only useful if it tells the truth — all of it — and because she teaches her own alongside everyone else’s. She uses her own placements to teach readers how to work with their energy instead of against it: how a second house Pisces Moon, for example, can dissolve into other people so completely that it loses itself, and how she learned detachment as a practice — how to love deeply without merging, how to stay porous without disappearing.

There is an entire chapter on Uranus in Taurus — the transit that ran from 2018 to 2026 and disrupted the material foundations of an entire generation. Home. Body. Money. Identity. Stability. For Ashlee, it arrived as a complete collapse: the loss of her city, her partnership, her career, her physical health, and eventually her sense of who she was supposed to be. There is a passage about not feeling at home in her own body, her own emotions, her own life — the specific disorientation of Uranus moving through the house of self-worth and physical form and not recognizing the woman in the mirror. Millions of people lived some version of this transit. The chapter gives it a name, a map, and a way through. It is the longest chapter in the book, and the one she fought hardest to get right.

There is a chapter on Human Design that most authors would not have had the courage to write. Ashlee is a 5/1 Manifesting Generator — the 5th line being what Human Design calls the Heretic, the one who is constantly projected onto. The good projections and the bad ones. The savior narrative and the villain one. The chapter is deeply personal and deeply instructive at the same time: it traces the specific pain of being seen as whatever people need you to be rather than who you actually are, and it teaches the 5/1’s core lesson — that neither the good projections nor the bad ones are real, and that none of them are yours to carry. The book covers every major planetary transit — Saturn returns, Uranus disruptions, Neptune dissolutions, Pluto rebirths, Chiron wounds, the Nodes — and maps them onto the houses of real life: career, relationships, home, body, identity, spirituality, loss. And it does all of this in plain language, with enough of Ashlee’s own life woven through it that you never have to wonder what any of it looks like in practice.

Her professional journey began at sixteen, when she joined the vocal group Shy!?, developed under the mentorship of acclaimed musician, producer, and educator Reggie Andrews who has collaborated with the likes of Rick James, The Pharcyde, Kamasi Washington, The Dazz band and more.

In 1992, Merce, performing under her given name, Mercedes Martinez, became a founding member of the quartet The Jazzyfatnastees. The group signed to Fathouse, an imprint of Tommy Boy Records, led by her brother, JSw!ft, producer of the seminal West Coast hip-hop album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde. The Jazzyfatnastees recorded an unreleased album at Fathouse before departing the label.

Positioned at the rich intersection of ’90s R&B and hip-hop, and at the genesis of what would become the neo-soul movement, The Jazzyfastnastees were invited to collaborate with The Roots and relocated to Philadelphia. Amid industry and personal transitions, the quartet ultimately evolved into a duo alongside Tracey Moore. They would become some of the most sought-after background vocalists of the late ’90s and early 2000s, collaborating with artists including Eric Benét, Meshell Ndegeocello, De La Soul, Stevie Wonder, and The Brand New Heavies.

Their debut album, The Once and Future, released on Motive Records (The Roots’ imprint on MCA), featured contributions from Questlove and producer Scott Storch. The Jazzyfatnastees released three albums to critical acclaim and performed internationally at renowned stages, including the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals and London’s Jazz Café. In 1999, they were nominated for a Soul Train Lady of Soul Award and received press coverage from major publications such as Billboard, Time, Vibe, The Source, and USA Today. They also appeared on the soundtracks for The Hurricane and In Too Deep.

In addition to the success of The Jazzyfatnastees, the group, alongside their manager and producer Richard Nichols, co-founded the influential Black Lily, a women-centered live music series dedicated to artist development and creative community. Blending a house band, artist residencies, and a signature open-mic format, Black Lily became a vital platform for emerging and established artists alike.

Launched in 1999 at New York’s famed Wetlands, the series later found its home at The Five Spot in Philadelphia and also hosted events in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. What began as a grassroots movement quickly grew internationally, with Black Lily events in France and Japan. The platform later evolved into two Black Lily Film & Music Festivals, featuring artists such as Toshi Reagon, Amy Winehouse, Alice Smith, Jean Grae, Jill Scott, and Kindred the Family Soul.

Now, with her debut solo project ALIVE, Merce steps fully into her own artistic voice, marking a profound turning point both creatively and personally. Written after the loss of her partner in life and music, Richard Nichols, the album became a source of strength during a period of uncertainty while navigating life as a solo parent caring for their son with autism and developmental disabilities. ALIVE represents Merce’s journey through grief, resilience, self-discovery, and renewal.
