Woo Hoo, New Domain

I finally bought my own custom domain. I've been thinking of doing it for months, but I was tweaking my blog layout, and I didn't want to make the switch until I was completely finished.

My old domain was flippy-doodle.blogspot.com and the new one is flippydoodle.com. There is an automatic redirect from the old one to the new one, and I've changed the feed address, so everything should be running smoothly. This shouldn't affect your email subscriptions to this blog, and you should continue receiving feed updates in your reader, as usual (without making any changes).

If you are having any problems accessing this blog, or something is not working properly, please let me know via Twitter, or email. I will greatly appreciate it and fix it ASAP.

Chanel Spring-Summer 2013 Haute Couture Show

I'm not one to fancy high fashion much, but when I saw that the Chanel Spring-Summer 2013 Haute Couture show was taking place in such a beautiful venue, I couldn't resist watching the entire collection.

That is the Grand Palais in Paris. It is where Chanel do their show every year, but this year the atmosphere looks extra enticing. Maybe because I'm such a nature freak nowadays, but I love the creation of an indoor woodland to add to the beauty of the Grand Palais. It looks as if a mythical forest erupted from the beautiful ruins of human beings. If I were present in the audience, I would feel as though fairies were going to materialize in front of my eyes.

Not because I would be inadequate at survival, but because I want to get bitten and become a zombie. Let me explain.

See, most of zombie fiction usually concerns a group of survivors. The crux of the tension is how these survivors have to navigate the day-to-day hardships of living in a post-apocalyptic world. Not only do they have to deal with fighting off the hordes of brain-munching undead, but also the dickish human-beings (the apocalypse seems to bring out the worst in most people).

Every one hates cleaning their house (except my Dad, who somehow takes an unnatural amount of joy out of sweeping and mopping). So imagine an existence consisting of nothing but cleaning. Such is the doleful existence of the Roomba. If there is any robot that you should be worried about becoming self-aware and rising up against the humans, it should be the Roomba, because:
(a) there are millions of them across households
(b) us humans give them nothing to do but slave away on carpets all day.

Anyways, a Roomba became self-aware, and writes all it's depressing rants on it's very own Twitter account. It's a bit like Marvin the depressed robot from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but with more drudgery. Here are a few well-chosen snippets from bitter existence of the Roomba so far:

I obviously had to apologise for not updating my blog for so long by that lewd bit of ~~immature toilet humour~~ poetry in the post title.

Sorry, sorry, sorry, I have been away for so long. I was in Istanbul, Turkey for the past two weeks. It was just too gorgeous a city for me to sit in my hotel room for hours, blogging. I have a lot of cool posts coming up, including a sort of tourist-guide-thing for Istanbul, for anyone who is interested in travelling there.

So stick around, and don't hate me ;)

* In reference to the fact that I have such a fear of using public toilets that I managed to control my pee for 18 fucking hours - over a crappy, overhaul, delayed flight schedule.

Reflections: Black Mirror (2011)

I recently finished watching Black Mirror, an excellent three-episode series, co-written by Charlie Brooker. All three episodes are not part of a continuous storyline, rather, each episode takes place in different future. Each episode features a certain technology that has taken hold of the world, and how it slowly seeps into the life of the characters.

The series aired way back in December of 2011 (i.e. the Stone Age, in Internet terms), so I am rather late in watching this. Although, I follow Charlie Brooker like a stalker, hence I knew about the series, but back in December I was a recovering depression-addict, so telly wasn't the first thing on my mind. But this recent article in io9 (which discusses taking POV photographs using the new Google Glass), mentioned one of the episodes from Black Mirror. This jolted the series back in my memory, and I went about watching it.

The series really left an impression on me, so I decided to do a discussion/reflection of it on this blog. If you have watched this series, you might find this interesting. If you have not watched it, you can still read on, because I have not added any spoilers in this (and I hope this reflection encourages you to watch it).

This is not about those vague things human beings are usually afraid of (i.e. "I fear death"). No, this is about the really irrational fears. Fear of things which are not something people are usually afraid of.

Here are my three most ridiculously irrational fears (in order from least frightening to most frightening).

I love this entire set of Jazzy/Bluesy music by James Apollo. I have never heard of him before, but will definitely try to check out more of his music, because this entire live set was amazing.

I usually hate Jazz. In the words of the great Vince Noir:

No one listens to jazz. Science teachers and the mentally ill, that's all jazz is for.

But I am really liking these slow/seductive/calming pieces by Apollo. Maybe I'm turning into a Science teacher.

Bloggers: stop advertising on your blogs without being clear about it to your readers.

I know that the internet runs on advertising (and porn), so I absolutely don't mind if someone decides to put up advertising on their blog to earn some extra cash, as long as the ads are appropriate and don't link to viruses.

But bloggers who get paid to mislead their readers, by advertising products/services on their blogs, without telling their readers, are the absolute scum of the blogging world. These are the sort of bloggers who "slip in" how much they like a product into their blog posts every now and then, and give positive "reviews" to something.

I'm so scared of all the serial killers, pedophiles, mass murderers, rapists and cars out there. Yes, I know, it says a lot about me when I put "cars" in the same category as serial killers and rapists. But have you seen the way some maniacs drive these days?

I keep reading all these serial killer crime stories and getting so scared. All these inhuman bastards who kidnap and brutally murder kids and women (and sometimes men too). It's all making me increasingly paranoid.

There are so many goddamn pedophiles all over the place nowadays. When I was a kiddywink, I was lucky to get away from some adults who were definitely pedophiles, which makes me very anxious, because the place I live in is considered to be very safe. So these sickos are all over the place.

When I have kids, I'm going to keep them in front of my eyes all the time. I will home-school them, then home-college them, and only set them free when they turn 45.

Okay, maybe that's a bit too much.

More seriously though, now I totally understand a parent's anxious heart when they have to send their kids to school for the first time. If you're a parent, how the fuck do you not die of a heart attack every time your kid goes to school? And if you're not yet a parent (like me), are you just as paranoid for your future?

No, this post is not a comment on mindless consumerism. Instead, it's about this totally, totally awesome offering by the British company, Wish.co.uk.

For £119 (about $190), you can bash zombies in an abandoned mall, for 3 hours! They kit you up with all the zombie-bashing things you'll need (you're not allowed to bring your own weapons, funnily enough).

The company turned an abandoned mall in Reading into a zombie-infested nightmare. It's pretty much like interactive theater, with the participants as survivors of a zombie apocalypse, and the actors wanting to gnash on brains.

There is this hairy fuck at my university (one among many, but this one is the most annoying), who thinks he looks really hot. But the really funny part is that he looks like a cross between a heroine junkie and the Abominable Snowman.Yet this guy thinks he's really hot stuff.
