Interview:
What inspired you to want to become a writer?
Growing up, I moved around a lot. A. LOT. My life was filled with goodbyes...to friends, to family, to teachers, to houses...but the things I never had to say goodbye to were books. Those I could bring with me or find again in a library. I could read them over and over. The characters in books were like lifelong friends. When I realized I loved writing just as much as reading, I knew I wanted to create characters that readers could fall in love with, could befriend and think of as friends the same way I did in all of my childhood favorites.

If you could be one of the Greek Gods, which would it be and why?
Can I choose a Celtic god from Set in Stone? Hmm...Greek...I'd love to be Athena. Wise and kick-butt strong – neither of which I currently am...

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
Absolutely. There is always some kernel of me in every character I write. Sometimes physical traits (not Geoff's big ears!!) but usually personality traits, perceived or real, that worm their way into my characters.

Spontaneity or Planning Ahead?
My schedule dictates that I plan ahead. Kids activities always comes first and I have a massive desk calendar mounted on my wall so I can keep track of all the places we're supposed to be. But, when we're not beholden to schedules, spontaneity reigns supreme. I love nothing better than hopping in the car and just...going. No idea what we'll do, what we'll see, where we'll end up or when we'll be home...and we always have a blast.

Shoes or Sandals?
Uh...barefoot. I spent three years in Hawaii where wearing shoes to school was optional. Even now, living in the frozen tundra (Minnesota), I still prefer no shoes. Inside, of course!

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Keep writing. Even when you're discouraged, even when you've just received your 100th rejection letter or bad review, even when your schedule is so crazy that you need to prop your eyelids open with toothpicks to stay awake. Even if you only write one sentence...it's one more sentence than you had before.

Cats or Dogs?
Growing up, I had the best dog in the entire world. Part sheepdog, part collie, a beauty queen she was not. And then she died and I went pet-less for a long time...until a certain orange cat ambled into my life. Seven cats later (not all at the same time!), I've planted myself firmly in the feline camp. But if my dog miraculously came back to life? Yeah, I'd welcome her into the fray in a heartbeat.

Night owl, or early bird?
As long as there are copious amounts of coffee (with cream), early bird all the way.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I have an untitled YA nearing final edits, about a girl who finds all the wrong support as she struggles with her parents' divorce. Megan is sweet and vulnerable and Aidan, the boy she turns to, is...not. He gets her into a heap of trouble. A heap.
I also have a middle grade halfway done, about a boy who keeps almost dying...and a black cat that keeps saving him. I adore the main character and the cat is pretty darn awesome, too. Tentative title is The B.A.D. (Big Almost Death).
And eleventy billion other ideas I wanna write when I find the magical elixir that gives me 32 hours in a day instead of 24...

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Because just like Valerie, every one – regardless of age – has a touch of magic in their lives.

Set in Stone

Fifteen year-old Valerie is used to losing things–she lost her dad to his job ages ago and her best friend moved with no warning...and hasn't been heard from since. During a weekend camping trip with her emotionally distant parents, she stumbles upon a hidden, mysterious stone and finds herself desperate to keep it, to possess it. Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I have a few more sweet adult romances coming for the Honey Creek books line. Goals: I want to get readers excited about sweet romance again. The kind where love happens in the heart – not between the sheets

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
I read a book that whisked me away and left me wanting more. I want to do that. Inspire people, encourage them, remind them all things are possible.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Don’t EVER – never-ever-never give up. This is your dream and no one else is going to chase it for you.

If you could choose only one time period and place to live, when and where would you live and why?
I love my life. I know it’s blessed. I’d stay right here. Right now. As for the time frame: Technology is amazing, making the world smaller today than ever before. I spoke to my husband this morning via video chat, though he’s across the globe in Switzerland on business. Our kids saw him and looked out his window and showed him what they were working on. It was amazing. And I love Ohio. It’s gorgeous and delightful in innumerable ways. Life moves slower. People are nicer. I have no intentions of going anywhere else.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
A mom. (That came after I figured out space-cowgirl wasn’t a real career option)

What do you do in your free time?
Wrangle kids. We wrestle and cook and make things up together. I was a homeschool mom until this year, but we still spend lots of time together having adventures. If we can’t find an adventure, we make one up!

If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?
The Cinderella Story

Who or what inspired you to become an author?
I’ve always enjoyed words and been a storyteller. Being an only child help my imagination grow. I considered writing my gift or talent and wrote for a women’s ministry newsletter for a few years. Deciding to write for publication was an act of faith. Now, we’ll see what happens.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Reality television. People and the way they interact has always fascinated me (another symptom of being an only child, I think). The fact so many people let cameras follow them around is unfathomable, so I admit it…I watch them. It’s awful.

If you had 24 hours alone how would you spend it?
Reading! I love to jump into an author’s world and see where they take me. I finish a novel (usually YA) every few days. I would definitely read or write.

In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?
Janet Evanovich!

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?

A ballerina. A lawyer. The first woman President of the United States.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?

“You don’t get what you don’t ask for.” You’ll never hear yes unless you’re brave enough to ask the question.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Vanilla. It is full of possibility. Like a blank page, it can be completely transformed.

Night owl, or early bird?

Definitely an early bird. I get up at 4:30 every morning to write before I start my “real” day, which means kids and a full-time job. I start collapsing at 9:00 pm and if I’m not in bed by 11:00 I turn into pure evil.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.

The Summer of Hammers and Angels is for hopeful readers—those who believe the world and the people in it could be a little bit better.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

I met a young girl at a book signing. She inched around my stack books, picked up The Summer of Hammers and Angels, read the back, then she skipped off to look at the thousands of other books in the store. When she returned, she clutched the book like it was a long-lost friend and whispered, “I pick this one.”

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?

I have a playlist for The Summer of Hammers and Angels on my website. The song that epitomizes the main character, Delia, is King of Anything, by Sara Bareilles. If you like the song, you’ll like Delia. If you don’t like the song, you’ll like Tommy Parker, Delia’s nemesis.

If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?

Only one? I’d have to pick Z for Zachariah, by Robert C. O’Brien. This book was read to me in class as a child and it stuck. Eventually, as an adult, I was able to piece enough of the story together to find it again. And it was still fantastic.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?

I’m a big fan of the reality show Survivor. Should I be embarrassed by that?

Favorite smell?

Gardenias. I planted two bushes so I could smell them more often.

If you had 24 hours alone how would you spend it?

I almost burst with excitement thinking about days like this. Let’s see…I’d drink too much coffee. Write. I’d watch a cooking show. Hiking would be on the agenda, and a hot bath. A simple dinner with a glass of wine, a page-turner of a book, and a snuggly fleece blanket and a movie my husband and boys wouldn’t appreciate.

In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?

John Steinbeck. Of course I’d be hanging on for dear life, but it would be a great ride.

Most folks have never seen an angel.

God does a lot of willing in Tucker’s Ferry, West Virginia.
Delia's summer is getting off to a terrible start. First, an inspector shows up at the house and threatens to condemn it. Then lightning strikes, literally, and Mama ends up in the hospital. Book Review: In Too Deep by Amanda Grace

Book Summary:

I never meant for anyone to get hurt. All I wanted to do that night was make a play for Carter Wellesley. His heartless rejection was mortifying, but people got the wrong idea when they saw me leaving his bedroom, crying. That's how rumors of rape started.

Now girls at school are pouring out their sympathy to me. Guys too. But not everyone's on my side. The school has become a war zone and the threats are getting scary. What began as poetic justice has morphed into something bigger--forcing me to make a terrible choice.

In Too Deep is a book I didn't want to put down and stayed up until 2 am to finish. When I took a break from reading I couldn't help but think about the storyline and wonder just how Sam was going to get herself out of the mess she was in and what the consequences would be. Thus I was drawn back to the book and stayed up to finish.

Overall I was pleased with this book. The story sucked me in and I like the way the author writes. I could relate to the characters and was grateful this book showed that there were consequences for the choices that were made.

The only thing I could have done without was the language. I'm not a fan of language in books especially the F word.

Rating: 4 Stars - Great Books

Under usual circumstances this is a book I would have put down after reading the first couple of chapters, but circumstances were not normal. This was the only audio book I had with me at work and I had a mundane task to complete so I just kept listening. By the time work was done I was nearly half way through the book and then kept listening because I wanted to know how everything turned out.

The first half of the book was just ok, it was entertaining but I really didn't care about the characters and found it to be a little far-fetched and cheesy. However it held my interest enough to continue to the end and I did like the ending. So its rating went from a "not my kind of book" or "wouldn't recommend" to a "take it or leave it" kind of read by the end. There really isn't much more I have to say other than if it looks like something you might enjoy perhaps you should check out a few other reviews to see what others thought about it since it really wasn't my cup of tea.

Rating: 2.5 Stars - Take it or Leave it

Content: Too much for my liking. Lots of language including a couple uses of the F word, talk and descriptions of everything that goes with a stereotypical prom, after parties & frat parties.

Seeing Cinderella is for any girl who feels (or has ever felt) like she's the least: the least pretty, the least popular, the least "seen," and hopes that one day things will change.

I'm just about finished with my second book, which is currently titled PLASTIC POLLY. It's written from the perspective of one of the most popular eighth graders in her middle school, who most people see as being "fake." When I was growing up, I was always intrigued by the phrase, "She's so fake." Because what does that even mean? To an extent, we all wear masks and I decided I wanted to write from the perspective of a girl who many others don't like. Of course, I always have to have something fun in my projects, so Polly, my main character, ends up having to coordinate a talent show competition between her middle school and their rival school, and when she finds out that only the popular kids (as opposed to the most talented kids) are being selected to participate in the competition she has to decide what to do.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

I spoke at the PTSA meeting of a local middle school and some of the students wore "magic" glasses in support of SEEING CINDERELLA. That was supremely cool. Even more so, was getting to talk with some of the girls afterward and hear all about their story ideas. I love middle schoolers, they have so much passion.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world… which would it be?

Hogwarts, most definitely. But I'm too much of a chicken to end up in Gryffyndor, so I'd probably be in Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?

Yes. This never made it into SEEING CINDERELLA, but, Daydream Believer by The Monkees is Callie's parent's favorite song and she sings it to herself a lot. I wanted to put it in, but it just didn't seem to fit.

What is your favorite Quote?

There are a lot of Bible verses I like, but in terms of a quote from a work of fiction, I love it when Dumbledore says in the Deathly Hallows, "Words are our most inexhaustible source of magic, capable of both inflicting injury and remedying it." The idea that sticks and stones may break my bones but names can never hurt me, has never made any sense to me. The words we use matter.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?

I wanted to be a rock star like Madonna. Then I taped myself singing and played it back so I could hear what I sounded like. Yeah, that dream died pretty quick. Sometimes, ignorance really is bliss.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?

One of the best pieces of advice I've ever heard was from Shauna Niequist in her book, BITTERSWEET, when she talked about keeping a list of "Things I Don't Do." I thought it was brilliant. I now have a list of things I don't do, and it includes: baking, scrapbooking, ironing, and making hot breakfasts in the morning. I've thought about adding no cleaning whatsoever to the list, but I'm not sure I can get away with it!

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

Hunger Games. I'm going to try to wait to see it with my husband. But I may have to blow off writing one morning while my kids are at school and sneak away to the theatre by myself.

What is your guilty pleasure?

I like to go out for Jedi Cheesecake with some of my writer friends. This means we ingest mass quantities of said cheesecake, while playing mind tricks on ourselves that it won't affect our waistlines.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I'm known for being a questionable housekeeper, so it might surprise people to know I can’t actually get into a bed at night unless it's been made. I usually make my bed before I take my kids to school, but if for some reason I can't get to it during the day, I actually have to make my bed before climbing into it to go to sleep at night. Yeah, I'm weird.

I am a storyteller and having readers to tell my stories to is the best reward there can be.

Pretty much anywhere -- I love to roam. But I really like going to new places where I have never been before.

First off I should have read Anna and the French Kiss before reading this one. Lola and the Boy Next Door is not a sequel but a "companion" novel. It takes place after Anna and the French Kiss. Anna and St. Clair play a minor role in this story but obviously I now know how their story ended without having read their book. Having enjoyed Lola I'll be going back and reading Anna and the French Kiss ASAP.

Lola and the Boy Next Door was one of those feel good, make you smile, read in a day kind of books. I loved the quirky characters in this story. Cricket was by far my favorite, he is just so sweet. I'm a succor for the boy next door turns into much more than a friend story line.

I'm not a fan of sex in young adult books. However if it is going to be there I wish it were always written the way it was in this book. It was done without the blow by blow details. Statements such as I lost my virginity on my seventeenth birthday work for me. I know it happened but I don't have to skip paragraphs or pages as every step is detailed. Of course there is still the issue that Lola was just 16/17 and her boyfriend was 22. I wasn't a fan of Max and appreciated Lola's parent's concerns and attempts to monitor and limit Lola's interactions with him. I don't usually enjoy reading about gay characters but I loved Lola's parents.

Rating: 4 Stars - Great Book

Content: Some language including a couple F words, there is sex but it's never graphic or described in any details, just things like - on my birthday I lost my virginity or I put my shirt back on, a few crude comments and some innuendo, Lola's parents are 2 gay men.

INTERVIEW:
What is one book everyone should read?
I think everyone should read Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. Never before and never since have I been so overcome with the need to read someone’s work aloud. I remember reading it for the first time as I walked up Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles – I often read as I’m walking. So, I’m walking and reading and trying not to trip over tree roots, when I just feel this buzz inside me like a song that must be sung, and I start saying the words out loud because they are so beautiful and strong and real. If you want to learn about writing your truth, this is the book to read.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. I still do.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
I wanted to be a dancer, but I was so clumsy, I banged into everything. My family called me “Bumps and Bruises,” that’s how bad it was. In my first tap dance performance at five, I fell off the stage. I was the comedy relief dancer. But I imagined I was graceful and danced everywhere I went. I still do. If you drive by me with the right song blasting, I’ll probably break it out right there on the sidewalk.

What is your favorite Quote?
My Dutch grandparents had a quote on the wall which was the family motto. In English, it is, “Hard work brings success.” I really believe this is true.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
I think if you keep writing every day and you work hard at your craft, you’ll make it. Some writers say you need connections or you need luck or you need an MFA, but I don’t think any of these things are true. You need to work very hard. For some writers, they’ll get a break early, but if you keep writing, take classes or get some kind of feedback, and you send your work out, you’ll succeed. The difference between a published writer and an unpublished writer is that the published writer went one step further, did one more draft or sent out one more query letter. They pushed on at that moment the other person gave up.

How did you know you should become an author?
I have to write. If I don’t, I’m just a miserable grouch. You really wouldn’t want to be around me. So, it wasn’t a choice whether I was going to write or not. I have to do it, no matter what, so I figured I’d better make money doing it too.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
The nicest part is quite simple. Before, my family and friends would ask if I was still working a book. I’d say I was and I’d see the pity in their eyes and I knew they didn’t think I’d ever do it. Because they loved me, I think they wanted me to shift my dreams to something “more realistic.” But the good thing is that I’m a bit of a fighter. Every time I saw that look, I thought, well, I’ll show you. And now that my debut novel, TRAFFICKED, is out, it just feels peaceful. I’m doing what I was meant to do.

What is your writing routine?
After I get our girls off to school, I take the dog for a run or a walk. I need that time to shift from mommy mode into writer mode. When I get home, even though I’m all sweaty, I don’t shower. I try to minimize the amount of things I do before sitting down. Usually my mind is filled with ideas that need to quickly get onto the computer before they run away. I make some tea, grab a snack, sit down at the computer, and let it fly for two to four hours, depending on when I have to pick up my youngest daughter.

What is your favorite writing food?
I love to have a good hot tea with soy milk and honey and a chocolate chip and raisin oatmeal cookie. Mmm. Now that I’ve said it, I must have it right now.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read TRAFFICKED.
While you’re reading it, you won’t be able to put it down, and afterwards, you’ll hold your family and friends close and feel grateful for all the wonderful things you have in your life.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
When I was a teenager, I was kicked out of my house and lived out of my car for a brief period. During that time my only source of entertainment was the books I checked out from the library. It was those late night reading sessions fueled by a flashlight that ignited my love of books and writing.

I was sent an ARC of Griffin Rising a year ago, right at the time my life was thrown a curve ball and I went from reading 5 or 6 books a week to just one. Unfortunately that meant Griffin Rising did not get reviewed as I had planned. I finally picked this book up yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It's a quick read so I easily made it through it in one afternoon.

Terrae Angeli or guardian angels are the main characters in Griffin Rising. I loved the original take on angel lore that the author came up with. The originality of the storyline and storytelling made it stand out so that I didn't feel like I was reading just another young adult cookie cutter paranormal book. The story was entertaining and engaging and I connected with the characters. I especially liked the relationship between Griffin and Basil.

This is a book that I can recommend without hesitation. I consider it a clean read (although it does have some violence). I'm looking forward to reading the sequel Giffin's Fire.

Rating: 4.5 Stars - Highly Recommend

Describe your book in five words or less.

Satisfying finale for the O'Briens!

How did the title for your book come about?

Several pivotal scenes in the book take place in Nell's beautiful garden. For me, The Summer Garden evoked that setting.

What was the inspiration behind your book?

Luke, the last of the O'Brien grandchildren, needed his own story. I wanted to explore what it would be like to be the youngest in a family of over-achievers and, of course, all readers of the series knew he couldn't possibly end up with the manipulative Kristen Lewis. In Moira, I hope I found the perfect challenging soulmate for him.

At what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I'm still trying to figure out if that's what I want to be. I certainly didn't have an inkling it was a possibility until I was into my 30s!

Who are some of your favorite authors?

I love lots of the writers who write books similar to mine -- family and community oriented stories with a distinct voice and some humor. Among my favorites are Jan Karon, Carla Neggers, Robyn Carr, Debbie Macomber, Susan Wiggs, JoAnn Ross. I also love a number of mystery series, including those by Sue Grafton, Earlene Fowler, Earl Emerson, and most recently Louise Penny.

What are some of your favorite books?

I suppose on my all-time favorite list I'd put Little Women and the Little House on the Prairie series, which take me back to the days when my Mom read to me. Recently I was blown away by The Help and sobbed my way through the closing pages of a wonderful upcoming book by Emilie Richards called One Mountain Away.

What advice do you have for people who want to get into the writing business?

Put your butt in a chair and write! Then be prepared to re-write. Listen with an open mind to criticism. And find one professional -- agent, editor or a fellow writer -- whose advice you trust implicitly. For me that's been my agent, Denise Marcil, with whom I've worked almost my entire career.

What is your favorite scene in the book and why do you love it?

Without going into details that could spoil it, I'd have to say the final scene. For me it was the perfect finale -- lots of emotion, a few chuckles, maybe even a tear or two!

Did you model any of your characters after anyone in particular?

Not that I'll ever admit to!

How do you keep your characters fresh after so many books?

Whenever I'm creating characters for a new book or series, I approach them as I would a person I've just met, slowly peeling back layers and getting to know them. The world is filled with fascinating people and, as I'm constantly reminded, each one has a unique background or perspective.

What are you currently reading?

Louise Penny's latest, A Trick of the Light. I just finished Lover's Leap by Emily March.

If you weren't a writer, what would you be doing?

Retired!! I've already had three other careers -- journalist and critic, hospital program administrator, and bookstore owner. I'm not sure I have a new challenge left in me.

What is the hardest part of writing for you? What's the easiest?

Actually writing the story is the easiest. I love sitting down every day and getting caught up with my characters and the world they live in. The hardest is dealing with all of the many other aspects of publishing, all of which are incredibly important to the process of getting books into the store and sold.

If your book were turned into a movie, which actors/actresses would you like to play the main characters?

That's a really difficult question for me. I just want to meet Kevin Costner, but I'm not sure there's a role for him in this story!

Can you tell us three things about yourself that you can't find on the Internet?

Isn't everything somewhere on the Internet these days? If it's not, it's probably something I don't want revealed.

What do you love to do when you're not writing?

My favorite things are reading, which there's never enough time to do, gardening, which also involves the dreaded weeding, and going to the movies. I also enjoy the hard-fought Scrabble games I play with friends on various vacations. Sadly, though, I'm an easy mark. I always lose.

Is it difficult to write about another country, such as Moira's homeland, Ireland?

I doubt I would ever write about a foreign country if I hadn't been there. A recent trip to Ireland, though all too brief, gave me just enough of a feel for Dublin, at least, to feel totally comfortable writing about it.

You often write series/trilogies. Do you prefer that to stand-alone titles?

I absolutely love getting to create a world for a series or a trilogy and having the chance to go back and be with those characters over time. Once I've established that world and the people in it, the writing flows so much more quickly. That said, there are some stories that lend themselves to a stand-alone -- Flamingo Diner, Seaview Inn, Mending Fences to name a few. These all had serious topics that I felt worked most effectively in the stand-alone format.

Who is your favorite character from the Chesapeake Shores series?

I'd have to say Nell in many ways is my favorite. She's so strong and wise and non-judgmental. I've been fortunate to have some very wise older women in my life just like her.

The women characters you create are usually strong, independent-minded women. Are they based on anyone in particular?

Not on any one person, though I think my mom was definitely the role model for my own independent and strong-willed -- okay, stubborn -- personality, though many say I picked up a double dose of the stubborn gene from my dad. My aunt, who died last spring at 98 and my mom's friend who was 99 when she passed away -- all shared similar traits and were role models for me, as well, and perhaps for my characters.

What do you have coming up in the future?

I'm so excited about the return of the Sweet Magnolias this summer. Not only will there be three new books -- Midnight Promises (July), Catching Fireflies (August) and Where Azaleas Bloom (September) -- but there will be a Sweet Magnolias cookbook in September as well. It was written with a real southern chef, Teddi Wohlford, whose recipes have my mouth watering just thinking about them. Guest Post: Griffin Rising's Book Cover
Thanks, Kathy, for hosting me today to talk about my book cover.

Book covers are a unique art form. Besides projecting the essence of the story, a cover must also be appealing.

I was fortunate to be involved right from the beginning with the cover for Griffin Rising. One of the stipulations I requested was an illustration; no photographs or people. I also wanted a cover that was more “old school” in keeping with the antiquity of the Terrae Angeli.

Ardy Scott, the cover artist, came up with the idea of a griffin perched on top of the symbols of earth and fire. The larger diamonded spiral is a modified earth symbol, while the smaller triangle is a modified fire symbol.

I loved it right from the start. And since each of the four books in the series corresponds with a particular element, the use of brown and gold for book one (Earth) was perfect.

With the next book in the series, Griffin’s Fire, Ardy took the griffin symbol and changed it to imply a sense of movement. She also changed the color palette to red and gold, which works for book two (Fire).

I’m eager to see what Ardy Scott comes up with for book three, Griffin’s Storm (Water). Any suggestions as to the color palette?

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
French toast!

Caviar…yuck!

Because you’ll enjoy going on an adventure where demons and heroes from the past blend with history and action with just a hint of romance.

If you could jump into a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
It would be Anne McCaffrey’s Pern, but only if I could be a dragonrider! Anyone who hasn’t read McCaffrey should start with Dragon Flight as it’s well worth the effort.

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
Andre Norton, Anne McCaffery, Dean Koontz, Lee Child, Stephen King and Terry Brooks.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
The Hunger Games looks cool as does The Avengers and let’s not forget Breaking Dawn Part 2. Then there’s The Bourne Legacy, Ice Age: Continental Drift, Men in Black III, and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. I’m sure there’s more. As you can see, I’m a movie-o-holic!

What do you do in your free time?
Is there such a thing? Let me give you a little background. Since I graduated from high school (many, many years ago in a galaxy far, far away) I have worked and usually worked 2 jobs to make ends meet, sometimes 3 jobs. Last year my dad began to need more help around his house…he’s not ready for a nursing home but he shouldn’t live alone. So I quit my jobs (I taught high school history during the day, then taught night classes plus taught online classes to high school students), and moved to rural Missouri to help him out. Suddenly for the very first time in my life I was without a job and had free time. I was so excited…and sooo bored. My friends laughed at me because when they have free time they said they start a new hobby. So what did I do? I wrote a novel!

If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?
Careful, Craziness About to Ensue

Action or drama?
Why does there have to be an “or”? I like both but I just LOVE a good action flick!

What's your favorite season/weather?
I love all the seasons perhaps because I lived in the south for so long and there it’s only hot, really hot, and super hot. So when I get to see very different aspects of nature, I just love it. That being said, I think Spring would have to be my all time favorite. I begin gardening and love to see the little plants make their way through their growth habits. Of course, one year I planted an almond tree. I loved that tree, would go out and talk to it even and what happens? It turns out to be a peach! Lol.

Regular or Diet?
I’m with Garfield on the whole diet thing…the word is DIE with a T. So I’m a regular kinda gal.

Cats or Dog?
How could you possibly choose? They are both sooo sweet (most of the time). I have two of each.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
I started my second. And if that wasn’t enough, my brother put a countdown on my website to tell me the day it had better be out! Even when I’m not writing (especially when I’m not writing) I hear little tick tock sounds in my head. I don’t know if I can take it until June!

Sunday afternoons usually find me with an inspirational type book in my hands. I received an unsolicited copy of Hope Haven in my mailbox last fall and finally picked it up to read last Sunday.

The main character in this book is sixteen but this book felt more like a middle grade/tween read than a young adult read. Lauren's life seems to be falling apart. Her parents are separated, her grandma is dying and her horse gets injured. Nothing seems to be going her way.

Lauren can't bear the thought of her horse being put down after it's injured so the horse ends up at Hope Haven, a therapeutic riding center where horses are used to help those with special needs. There are some touching moments in this short story especially around Lauren dealing with the death of her grandmother.

This was an short, inspiring read I would recommended to those who love horses or have an interest in horses being used for therapeutic purposes.

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Into the future. I would love to know what lies ahead. It’s why I brought Merlin to the future. So that he could too.

If you were a superhero what would your name be?
Wondergirl. I've had this one picked out for awhile! But the real question is—what color tights?

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Currently, I am finishing up the next book in the My Merlin series to be released in early April. In My Boyfriend Merlin, Ryan comes a long way but there are plenty of challenges ahead. What inspired you to want to become a writer?
I started on comic books…yes, I’m a comic book geek. Then I became a full-fledged book lover ever since my parents took me to this cool thing called the “public library.” I picked up this awesome book called “Nancy Drew” and never looked back. In hindsight, my parents were smart to take me to the library. No parent could have afforded my voracious reading habit—which is why I’m fully onboard with the eBook craze.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
A reader told me they loved the book and couldn’t wait for the next one. What could be better?

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
In YA, my favorite book has to be Beauty by Robin McKinley. What a wonderful story for a girl whose way too much into fairy tales. The series that affected me the most, however, has to be Alanna by Tamora Pierce. I love the sword and sorcery bit—hence my own foray into the world of a modern day Merlin.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
I have a playlist! I’m a writer who can’t write without music. If I had to pick one, Merlin’s song is Mr. Brightside by The Killers.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
A detective! I read way too much Nancy Drew. A long time later I discovered she didn’t get together with Frank Hardy and I had to give up the dream.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
The Hobbit, Batman, Avengers, and John Carter looks cool.
