3rd MISOR FOTOFEST Kuyamis Festival 2020 Photography Competition's Top Winners

Competing with over a number of awesome entries, the MISOR FotoFest Kuyamis Festival Photography Competition has been an annual photography tradition that started in 2018 and had participated with a wide range of photographers across the province. Year after year, the MISOR FotoFest had been a challenging event and yet exciting for those photographers participating the friendly competition, and to be called the Grand Winners or be included to the Top Finalists and receive bigger and exciting prizes.

This year, the photography competition had three different categories: Conventional, Booth Display, and Mobile categories each with corresponding prizes to be received. While conventional and booth display categories uses DSLR, point and shoot, and/or Mirrorless system, the mobile category uses smartphones to capture images during the week-long celebration that started last January 06, 2020.

Participating photographers from amateur to enthusiasts, hobbyists to professionals and award-winning lensmen had given until January 09, 2020 to submit their chosen entries but was extended the following day to give them more time to decide their submitted photos bringing this year's theme "Explore and Experience Kuyamis Festival 2020".

After the deadline, the submitted photos were then judged by well-known personalities that have the knowledge and wit not only in photography qualities but also from the richness of the culture, and arts of Misamis Oriental carrying the award-winning citations to their names.

For this year's competition, official entries were judged by the following criteria:

Shore Breaks 5 Successfully Celebrated the Biggest Skimboarding Competition Yet

Created and officially launched last 2015 at Apple Tree Resort and Hotel with the purpose of promoting the watersport in Northern Mindanao and providing opportunities for the youth to actively engage in programs and events for a healthy and active lifestyle upholding the quality of life, Shore-Breaks, the biggest skimboarding competition not only in Region 10 or Northern Mindanao but throughout Mindanao successfully kicked off its 5^th installment last May 24-26, 2019 at the Resort’s property with the three-day annual tournament celebrating the half-decade existence of the event.

Presented by Apple Tree Resort and Hotel, the premier Resort and Hotel in the province of Misamis Oriental together with Grind PH, Business Week Mindanao and Mindanao Daily News as event partners, Shore-Breaks was considered as the biggest skimboarding event in Northern Mindanao in 2016, a year after its birth gathering participants from different parts of Northern Mindanao such as Iligan City, Opol-Misamis Oriental, Cagayan de Oro City, Municipality of Medina, and Dumaguete. It was then officially endorsed by the Department of Tourism Region 10 with the late Regional Director Catalino E. Chan III as one of the sought after events to look forward in Northern Mindanao. In 2017, Shore-Breaks created 3 categories namely Kids Category, and dividing the Adult Category into two (2); Advance Category, and Masters Category gathering enthusiasts, and professionals alike in this sports-oriented event. In 2018, Shore-Breaks set another record of gathering skimboarding participants from different parts of Mindanao and the Visayas such as Iligan City, Cagayan de Oro City, Opol-Misamis Oriental, City of Mati-Davao Oriental, General Santos City, Surigao del Norte-Caraga Region, Digos City-Davao del Sur, and Dumaguete City, resulting to one of the biggest skimboarding events in VisMin that even Mati’s pride the undefeated skimboarder and surfer of Amihan Sa Dahican National Skimboarding Tournament, and an international skimboarder winner, no other than Sonny Boy “Bayogyog” Aporbo joined the competition and was announced as the Ultimate Shore-Breaker in Masters Category.

The 5^th installment of Shore-Breaks opened its doors to a new level inviting all skimboarders within the country making it as a National Skimboarding Competition and also opening another category- the Wahine or Women Category aside of the Kids, Beginners, Advance, and Masters.

It started with an opening remarks given by the Tourism Officer of LGU-Opol Mr Kim Lazo, and an inspirational message by Ms Bjanesha M. Emphasis, the Resort’s General Manager to officially open the Endless Summer Beach Festival 2019 where Shore-Breaks is one of the main highlights of the summer event, and was then followed by the Oath of Sportsmanship. The event was hosted and facilitated by Mr Steve Norman Ebonia also known as Kinkin, a local professional skim-boarder, and was spare-headed by award-winning judges namely Anthony Oliver “Bibos” Ebonia, Benjie “Benz-e” Ebonia, and Richard “Sasik” dela Cruz. These judges had proven their unparalleled skills, and mastery of the watersport during their prime.

The shoreline of the Resort became a stadium of participating skimmers surrounded by a multitude of excited spectators cheering up for their favorite players as these skimboarders a total of 60 participants, 14 for the Kids Category, 17 from Beginners Category, 10 from Advance while 12 for Wahine, and 7 from Masters have prepared for this year’s competition.

Out of the 14 official participants for the Kids Category, 5 seasoned skimmers went to the finals showing their best skills to be announced as this year’s Ultimate Shore-Breaker. Nikolayve Faeldin, a local skimboarder from the Municipality of Opol surprised the judges with his ability surpassing other contingents and was announced as the 2^nd Runner Up (Rank 3). Daniel James Villasan, the Champion of the Shore-Breaks 4 Competition last year, and also announced as the Champion during the 2^nd Kabaybayonan Open Skim Tournament in celebration of Opol’s 4^th Kabaybayonan Festival held last April 2019 was dethroned by his opponent and was placed as the 1^st Runner Up (Rank 2). Giller Quitat, a skimboarder from Iligan City under Team PIRATA was announced as the Ultimate Shore-Breaker for this year’s Kids Category after pulling off his skills, and showing an impressive sets. Giller was also announced as the 3^rd Runner Up (Rank 4) during the 2^nd Kabaybayonan Open Skim Fest Tournament.

For the Beginners Category, 17 official participants engaged to the elimination round showing their best tricks during the given sets before proceeding to the Quarter finals. Eljon Obsioma, a local from Opol was announced as 2^nd Runner Up (Rank 3) while Angelo Ebonia, also a local from Opol was placed as Rank 2 (1^st Runner Up). Angelo was also announced as Rank 2 during the 2^nd Kabaybayonan Open Skim Tournament. Darrell Cabasagan from Team PIRATA, a local of Iligan City solidified his skimboarding career after announcing as the Ultimate Shore-Breaker for the Beginners Category while folding an impressive combinations during the final sets. Darrell was also the Champion during the 2^nd Kabaybayonan Open Skim Fest Tournament.

The newest category added for this competition- the Wahine gathered a total of 12 official female contenders but only 5 went to the finals. Both locals from Opol, Shyra Grace Salindo and Kharunisia Faeldin placed the 2^nd Runner Up (Rank 3) and 1^st Runner Up (Rank 2) respectively during the final sets. On the other hand, the 2^nd Kabaybayonan Open Skim Fest Tournament Champion, Joy Aleman who is also a local of Opol was announced as the Ultimate Shore-Breaker for Wahine Division.

Meanwhile, the Advance Category gathered 10 professional skimboarders from different places in Mindanao, where half of them went and proceeded to the Final round. Gerry Sacoram from Municipality of Villanueva was announced as the 2^nd Runner Up (Rank 3) while Lester Rosal, a local from Opol placed the Rank 2 (1^st Runner Up). Lester was the Ultimate Shore-Breaker last 2017 under the Kids Category and was also placed at Rank 3 (2^nd Runner Up) during the 2^nd Kabaybayonan Open Skim Tournament. On the other hand, Cheto Gentulan, a professional contender from Digos City-Davao del Sur was announced as this year’s Ultimate Shore-Breaker under Advance Category.

Battled for mastery and supremacy was the show for the Masters Category as 7 professional skimboarders from different places competed for this year’s title. Dingdong Lagmay from Team PIRATA, a boardsport professional from Iligan had given impressive sets during the final round resulting to a draw with his colleague from the said group no less than Johnle Obsioma who had remarkable sets during the 2^nd Kabaybayonan Open Skim Fest Tournament announcing him as the 1^st Runner Up (Rank 2) during that event. Dingdong on the other hand is a great contender throughout the five-year Shore-Breaks competition who made it on the final top spot. Both of them were announced as 2^nd Runners Up (Rank 3). RJ Edrozo on the other hand, a local from Opol and a member of TAUSI gathered his might to announce as the 1^st Runner Up (Rank 2). RJ planted his career with an inspiring outcome from Rank 3 during the Shore-Breaks 3 event and the recently 2^nd Kabaybayonan Open Skim Fest Tournament.

Meanwhile, the local skimboarder who had a solid career way back when he started to join competitions, and really have a future in skimboarding crafted a very impressive overall points during the final rounds for this category. Crismar Lariosa who made his name on top of the community was announced as this year’s Ultimate Shore-Breaker for Masters while successfully solidifying his career for the past years in the industry. He just recently went up to the Masters category from Advance category who happened to be the champion during the 2^nd Kabaybayonan Open Skim Fest Tournament.

A special award- Smallest and Energetic Skimboarder was also given to Sanimar Avia Jr known locally as “Waku” from Team PIRATA of Iligan City.

All of the winners were judged based on the following criteria:

Creativity: 40%

Difficulty: 30%

Smoothness: 20%

Audience Impact: 10%

For a total of 100%.

With the continued success over the span of 5 years together with the support of both local, national, and even international brands, organizations, and individuals, Shore-Breaks set its objective on giving these skimboarding participants a platform to pursue their dreams of becoming professional athletes.

4th Kabaybayonan Festival: Celebrating Opol's Summer Beach Event

The Municipality of Opol in the province of Misamis Oriental is a popular destination for beach lovers, and has been a weekend getaway for families and friends wanting to go for a swim, or just being laid back, and enjoying the majestic view of the Macajalar Bay. Also, Opol has been getting its chunk from the fame of the province' tourism industry, thanks to the consistency of the province' tourism slogan "Explore MisOr", and the hand-on-hand partnership of the Local Government Unit of Opol, and private organizations and establishments.

But don't you know the this famous beach stretch celebrates their own festival particularly during summer?

Kabaybayonan Festival, now on it's 4th year is Municipality of Opol's very own event that celebrates during the summer season, technically right after the Holy Week celebration. Created to give back to the environment, and the community, Kabaybayonan Festival started last 2014 in a three-day event celebration with different sets of activities highlighting the festival; it was formerly known as Summer Festival which had its beginning in the year 2002.

Kabaybayonan Festival's purpose is to promote the Municipality of Opol as a destination not only for beach goers, and also during the summer break, but as well for anyone who wanted to explore the municipality as a whole.

This year, the 4th Kabaybayonan Festival is scheduled on a 2-day celebration that will start from April 26 to 27, 2019 at Taboc, the longest fine sand beach stretch in the province. This will officially start with a community mass at 08:00am located in Marvilla Beach Resort with a national anthem and acknowledgement of participants, visitors, and sponsors.

Words of welcome will be conducted by Hon. Felixberto R. Macasarte, Jr., the Committee on Tourism Chairman, followed by an overview of the Kabaybayonan Festival by the Municipal Tourism Officer Mr Kim S. Lazo. A ceremonial toss for beach volley competition, and launching of Skimboarding Tournament will then be slated by the Municipal Mayor himself Hon. Maximino B. Seno with Hon. Chizarina M. Ortigoza, the SB members, Barangay Captain's and SK Chairman.

The 4th Kabaybayonan Festival will highlight different sets of events prepared for visitors and spectators that includes the 2nd Open Skim Fest Tournament in partnership with Team TAUSI and Apple Tree Resort and Hotel as the official event venue, Beach Volley Contest at Marvilla Beach Resort, Boat Dressing Contest with a parade from Baybayon Beach to Marvilla Beach, Duathlon (Swim and Run), Community Wide Clean-up Drive, Kite Fest, Mr and Ms Kabaybayonan 2019, and the very own Beach Dancing which is a product of the former Opol Summer Festival.

IMPRESSION

With a bigger size of 6.5-inch Full HD display at 1080 x 2340 pixels, Huawei Y9 2019 offers an overall 82.8% screen to body ratio or 19.5:9 display into 396 ppi density. The device shot through 4 AI cameras (Dual front 16MP + 2MP) and (Rear 13MP + 2MP) that is said to recognize more than 500 scene types translating into 22 category labels or real-time optimization, although we have yet to review the capabilities of the phone camera.

Huawei Y9 2019 has a powerful mid-range processor the Kirin 710 octa-core chip compared to its last generation. It also houses an endurance large power capacity of 4000 mAh, a non-removable Lithium-Polymer battery for an mid-range device.

2nd MISOR FOTOFEST Kuyamis Festival 2019 Photography Competition's Top Winners Successfully Announced

This year's photography competition has been a challenging one especially to those photographers who participated and successfully submitted their entries to the Kuyamis Festival photo contest. The registered participants were welcomed with the rainfall early in the morning testing their patience to get the best shots while others were inspired by the gracefulness of the contingents of the Kuyamis Festival Street Dancing Competition. Additionally, the deadline for the submission of entries was after the Street Dancing Competition which gave them a shorter time period for their chosen entries albeit the scope of the photography competition started last January 07, the start of the 6th Kuyamis Festival 2019.

From amateur to enthusiasts, hobbyists to professionals and award winning lensmen had participated the social photography event, and with that, a number of entries were submitted for the two given categories namely Conventional and Mobile categories with best images bringing this year's theme "Explore and Experience Kuyamis Festival 2019" in a more festive way.

Competing with over a number of exceptional and amazing entries for this year's event is not an easy one especially some of the participants are known to compete with various photography competitions carrying the award-winning citations to their names, good thing, we were assisted by these caliber personalities as panel of judges that have the knowledge and wit not only the photography qualities but also the richness of the culture and arts of Misamis Oriental.

One of the activities that highlight the event is the Kuyamis Festival Street Dancing and Festival Tableau. It is an annual festivity of thanksgiving, and acknowledgement to the earlier customs of the “lumads” who thrived in Misamis with a variety of sweet coconuts as their basic foodstuff. The celebration is marked by merry making of coordinated dances and songs while showcasing the coconut as a tree of life.

2. HINUGYAW FESTIVAL

LOCATION: KORONADAL CITY, SOUTH COTABATO

Hinugyaw which is said to originate from the Hiligaynon word “hugyaw” which means an expression of fun is an important celebration of merry making in Koronadal City, located in the province of South Cotabato. Hinugyaw Festival which usually starts on January 08 is a 7-day in length festivity celebrating the foundation anniversary or the establishment commemoration of the Koronadal, called in the past as Marbel.

Hinugyaw Festival is a celebration of its rich history, a tribute to the Maker while converging the drumbeats, and steps with the different ethnic cultures of its community; Christians, Maguindanaoans, and Indigenous B’laan people gather the valley of South Cotabato into one historical adaptation.

3. TRANSLACION OF THE BLACK NAZARENE

LOCATION: CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY

Translacion of the Black Nazarene, Cagayan de Oro City by Gian James Maagad

Commemorates every 9^th of January, the Translacion is said to be the largest procession of the image’s copy of the Black Nazarene, a life-sized image of a dark-skinned, kneeling Jesus Christ carrying cross drawing millions of devotees flooding on touching the image and is said to last 20 hours at the most.

In Cagayan de Oro, the Translacion or the annual Black Nazarene Procession will take place on the same day starting with the Holy Mass at 04:00am in St. Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral to be followed by the procession at 05:30am enroute Fernandez Street, Left turn to Velez Street, Right turn to Highway near Shell Station and to the Nazareno Church. Last year, some 200,000 attended the event and every year, it is said that the Translacion draws thousands visitors and devotees.

4. PASALAMAT FESTIVAL

Pasalamat Festival is an annual celebration of the local community of Pagadian City giving thanks for the bountiful and fruitful harvest in honor to its patron saint, Sto. Niño (The Holy Child Jesus), which coincides with the feast-day of Cebu City. The festivity celebrated every third Sunday of January.

Accordingly, the origin of the Pasalamat Festival was meant to honor the folklore god of agriculture. "The locals had to go to Mt. Kanlaon to honor the god and to give their gratitude from an abundant harvest. But as time had passed, it was transformed into far more colorful and exciting event to be in."

LOCATION: BUTUAN CITY, AGUSAN DEL NORTE

Kahimunan Festival of Butuan City, Agusan del Norte

Considered as the biggest festivity in Caraga region, Kahimunan Festival in Libertad, Butuan City is a version of a thanksgiving celebration of Santo Niño that founded in 1987 by Father Juanito “Nito” Belino, first Parish Priest of Sto Niño Parish.

Kahimunan derived from a Lumad word which means “gathering”, is a traditional ritual performed by the natives before the beginning of the planting season which characterizes by singing, chanting, and playing accompanied by indigenous musical instruments such as gong, the gimbor (drum),and bamboo (Kalatong and Kotik). Kahimunan Festival is a way of Butuanons to show their greatest thanksgiving to the patron saint, Santo Niño for all the good things that happened in their life, and bountiful harvest. Additionally, the festival is a combination of the pre-colonial culture that dates back the vibrant era of Butuan City.

Last year, MISOR FOTOFEST had gathered a number of participants joining the event and invited different Brand influencers, Resource Speakers including a 3x Master Photographer and Brand Ambassador through photography lectures, and folded the event through the announcement of the Top 10 Winners of the photography contest.

MISOR FOTOFEST serves as an avenue for amateur, hobbyist, and professional photographers to foster the appreciation and understanding of photography, hone their skills and encourage the growth of technical knowledge, and promote camaraderie amongst participants. It will start on January 07, 2019 (Monday) with the opening of the Photo Exhibits by the Camera Club of Cagayan de Oro showcasing the Province of Misamis Oriental as one of the destinations for photography from landscape to seascape, and mountain ranges to beaches. The photo exhibit will run until January 11, 2019 (Friday) at the Activity Center, Centrio Mall-Ayala, Cagayan de Oro City together with other members of the Culture and Arts Council from 10:00am until 08:00pm.

On January 09, 2019 (Wednesday), photography lectures will take place at the Activity Center, Centrio Mall-Ayala, registration starts at 04:00pm for walk-in guests, and officially starts at 04:45pm. The second topic will start at 06:30pm, and final briefing of the photography competition will commence after the photography lecture around 07:45pm.

On January 11, 2019 (Friday), a photowalk will start at 06:00 in the morning from the Provincial Capitol Grounds and will simultaneously celebrated with the 6th Kuyamis Festival 2019 Street Dancing Contest and Festival Tableau at 07:00am going to the Pelaez Sports Center. Submission of printed entries on the other hand for the Photo Competition will be at the Activity Center, Centrio Mall-Ayala until 01:00pm while winners will be contacted through SMS and/or email to join the awarding ceremony at the Limketkai Luxe Hotel.

Registration Fee at: P200.00 per head per category with two entries.

Photography Competition Mechanics, Terms and Conditions, Guidelines are as follows:

1. THEME: “Explore and Experience Kuyamis Festival 2019”.

2. The contest is open to the 2^nd MISOR FOTOFEST KUYAMIS FESTIVAL official participants, except for the employees of the Misamis Oriental Provincial Capitol.

3. The 2^nd MISOR FOTOFEST KUYAMIS FESTIVAL Photography Competition has two categories: Conventional, and Mobile.

4. Registration fee is at P200.00 per category which includes photographer’s ID (event pass), and 2 (two) entries per category.

5. Registered participants can submit up to 2 (two) entries for and/or either of the two categories. Meanwhile, an additional entry to be submitted is at P100.00 per photo per category.

6. Photo entries must be in a digital file full color or black and white in .jpeg, .jpg format and may be on portrait or landscape orientation.

7. Entries to be submitted in printed form with the size 12”x8” and/or 8”x12” (matte or glossy paper), no border, and photo entry must not carry any identifying mark of the participant (e.g. signature, initials, watermark). Printed entries should be accompanied by the original and edited soft copy of the image, make folders (1 original, and 1 edited) in CD/DVD together with the registration form with affixed signature of the participant, and should be put in a brown envelope with the complete name of the participant, must be sealed, and to be submitted at the Event Center, Centrio Mall-Ayala, Cagayan de Oro City.

8. All entries must be submitted in its highest resolution available using DSLR, Mirrorless, P & Shoot, Drone, &/or Smart phones.

9. All entries should be taken during the 6^th Kuyamis Festival 2019 celebration from January 07-11, 2019.

10. All entries should be limited to minimal editing e.g. cropping, brightness, sharpening, and contrast adjustments. On the other hand, HDR, infrared, stitches, and layering are highly discouraged and will automatically disqualify.

11. Deadline of submission will be on January 11, 2019, 01:00pm at the Activity Center, Centrio Mall-Ayala.

12. The selection of the winners will be at the sole discretion of the contest organizer, and panel of judges. No correspondence or any other form of communication regarding the decision will be entered into. Hence, the decision is final and irrevocable.

13. The contest organizer reserves the right and discretion to disqualify any participants if a violation is committed or unnecessary action/s which directly affects the contest procedure is done.

14. The photographer must be the sole author of the copyright of images entered into MISOR FOTOFEST Photography Competition and should attest that he/she is the rightful owner of the image.

15. All “printed photos” submitted as “official entries” will be considered property of the Organizers and as such, the Organizers further reserves the right whether or not to use the winning or non-winning photos. However, Organizer respects the Photographers rights and does not claim copyright for any images submitted. Hence, participant retains the full copyright of the image. Additionally, participants grant the Organizers, “Camera Club of Cagayan de Oro”, the “Misamis Oriental Provincial Tourism Office”, and “Misamis Oriental Culture, Arts, and Tourism Council” with or without the need for attribution, prior permission or additional pay or consideration: The right to use the submitted images royalty-free, worldwide in perpetuity; the non-exclusive license to copy, display, distribute, reproduce, and create derivative works of the submitted images, in whole, or in part, in any media now existing or subsequently developed, for all non-profit public information purposes.

16. The Organizers reserve the right to contact photographers to confirm information in the submission form or for any other purpose considered necessary.

17. The Organizers reserve the right to disqualify photographers who: tamper with the process, are unable to validate the information submitted, or breach the Competition’s Rules.

18. Failure to accept, and/or get the prizes although a series of communication has been made from the Organizers, will be forfeited within the period of 12 months starting from the announcement of winners.

19. If any party manifests in writing that his/her intellectual property rights have been violated by a participant/entry, the Organizers reserve the right to withhold the prizes and/or use of the winning photo until such issue has been resolved.

20. The criteria for judging are as follows:

Kuyamis Festival- Exploring Misamis Oriental’s Street Dancing Celebration

The most anticipated event in the province of Misamis Oriental is about to happen as the Kuyamis Festival 2019 is set to celebrate early next year from January 07-11, 2019 with different activities, and exciting events folded into a week-long festivity.

Every second week of January sets the annual celebration of the Kuyamis Festival, the official festivity of the Province of Misamis Oriental that also highlights the celebration of the province’s founding anniversary which will be on its 89^th year; the province was created on November 02, 1929 through Legislative Act No. 3537 which took effect on January 01, 1930. Now on its 6^th year, Kuyamis Festival is a brainchild of Governor Yevgeny “Bambi” Emano when he assumed office in 2013, about 5 years ago.

One of the activities that highlight the event is the Kuyamis Festival Street Dancing. It is an annual festivity of thanksgiving, and acknowledgement to the earlier customs of the “lumads” who thrived in Misamis with a variety of sweet coconuts as their basic foodstuff. The celebration is marked by merry making of coordinated dances and songs while showcasing the coconut as a tree of life.

Misamis Oriental with a land area of 3,575 square meters is located on the north of Bukidnon, on the west of Agusan del Norte, and east of Iligan Bay bounded on the north of Macajalar Bay and the Bohol Sea.

But did you know that the word “MISAMIS” have few versions of how it came about?

THE ORIGIN OF MISAMIS

During the earliest account before the Spanish conquistadores’ arrival in the Philippine archipelago, Misamis Oriental was under the flourishing and highly-civilized Rajahnate of Butuan, an Indianized Kingdom that dominated the Northern part, considered as one of the six “Great Kingdoms of Mindanao”. The old Misamis is said to be part of the coastline called Caraga that starts from the coastline of Surigao and reaches as far as Dapitan in Zamboanga Peninsula.

Accordingly, original inhabitants of the province were the Mountain Dwellers and non-muslim Lumads such as the Manobo and Subanen who gradually retreated following the influx of different dwellers and migrants. Europeans such as the ancient world colonizers Spanish and Portuguese, including Asian seafarers such as Indonesians, and Malays have had a number of testimonies through oral tradition of coming across “small golden colored nuts” that grow only in the coastal areas of the Pacific islands that the natives used as food.

Version: KUYAMIS

“Misamis” folk etymology is said to have been derived from the word “Kuyamis”, a Subanon term which means a variety of coconut. This type of coconut has a golden colored exocarp or the outer layer that are smaller in size, the water or the coconut milk, the coconut meat, and the coconut apple (the spongy mass) are said to be soft and sweet. The inner coat or called the shell on the other hand is bitter although soft.

During those years, the name was persisted as an inference of geographical location and upon the advent of the Spanish settlers, the word easily gave way to the more conveniently pronounceable but tainted word “Misamis”.

Version: MISSA

Another version came into existence that “Misamis” got its name from the word “missa”, a Spanish term for the Eucharistic Mass. It was said that during the Spanish era where Christianity was at peak in the Philippines, the word “missa” was shouted by native converts every time priests traveled around the province. Overtime, the Spanish missionaries started calling it as Misamis.

Whichever source it derived its name from, Misamis Oriental will be holding the 6^th Kuyamis Festival Street Dancing Competition on January 11, 2019 from the Provincial Capitol Grounds to the Pelaez Sports Center from 7am to 11am with 14 contingents from different municipalities in the province.

The upcoming celebration will remind us about the passion of the long forgotten history that has been reclaimed through this visual stories that will again came into existence through significant impressions, and various steps of vocal and dance festival.

Sun maidens were kissing the hills with golden color, creating a magnificent panorama while revealing the vastness of Mt Anggas- The Mineral Mountain

As we walked our way to the assembly point, the gentle wind and the warmth of the early Saturday dawn gave us a feeling of adventure that awaits us to our journey. My wristwatch ticks at 03:20am when we decided to start our quest to these mountain ranges, left the place with enthusiasm and departing the national road.

The great sun brought his remarkable brightness from a deep slumber.

Along the freeway, almost half an hour from our leaving, we broke off for a few minutes to purchase goods such as bread, and refreshments then we continued our way with the atmosphere of the mid November in the air. At the course of our travel of this non-concrete roadway while the sky is clear and moonless, the vastness of the universe greeted us with her multitude charm. I became like a child full of wonders and excitement, and at the moment, my mind were shaping with contents of imagination and thought: "how I wish to bring my family here to witness the fullness of the night while waiting for the breaking dawn. My daughter #SofiaFyrstinde will surely love this scene."

The first ray of light at the Mineral Mountain- Mt Anggas.

Half of the celestial sphere, thousands of stars of different colors overwhelmed us across the sky as we’ve finally reached the jump off point of our destination at 04:36am, half an hour from the national highway. The prominent constellation located on the celestial equator, the Orion with its brightest stars Beta Orionis (Rigel), and the Alpha Orionis, a blue-white and a red super giant also known as Betelgeuse shows as the brightest variable star of all, with the other Orion star clusters (Mintaka, Saiph, Bellatrix, Ainitak, Alnilam, and Meissa). Aldebran, Pleiades, Sirius, Pollux, and Procyon can also be seen without optical aid. Additionally, Ursa Major (Big Dipper) with Dubhe and Merak, together with the Ursa Minor (Little Dipper) with Polaris, the North Star are both visible. The galaxy have always been a source of wonder to me like these are the things that you have to see to believe.

Shortly after, we made our way and walked a small distance from our jump off to this part where a landmark can be found, a mango tree that is coined as the “Tree of Life.” Engr. Raul Ilogon, a fellow from the Tourism, Culture, and Arts Council in the province who is also in-charge of the Nyor’s Playground, a community-based and volunteer cooperative handling most of Mt Anggas hiking trips gave us a short lecture, and briefing in preparation of our hiking adventure.

“At that position!” pointing at that peak, Engr Raul told us that the best panorama in these mountain ranges can be found at that particular deck offering a 360 unbroken and wide-ranging view. Then, a moment later, we started the journey. We traveled across this track called the “Virgin trail”, a 60-70 degrees ascending passageway of rocks and gravels with long narrow grass and vegetation. Undersized by the idea as an easy path, the trail going to the high grounds was totally a rough encounter. I searched among the trail, and there was a Cliffside. Unprepared and with only brightness from my phone's flash of light, while carrying a loaded backpack of more than 13 pounds, the passage became challenging stairs carved in the uneven ground. I looked unsettled at that moment, counting my breath with every step I took. “I can make it!”, I thought, then twenty five more steps brought me to the ground trying to fix myself but the only sound I can hear was breathless gasp, almost panting, then I had a short of breathing. . . as luck would have it, I managed.

While inhaling intensely, our guides Repa Etabis, and Japhet Limas informed me that few footpaths are still needed to reach the top deck. At 05:00am about 18 minutes or so, the path took me to the topmost ground carrying another 25 heartbeats, I was not tired and yet, I was ready to drop- finally I have reached the viewing deck.

Few minutes after, the first ray of light progressed the calmness of the atmosphere while withdrawing the curtains of the breaking dawn, the great sun brought his remarkable brightness from a deep slumber.

The ranges framed every direction while we watched the sun with interest. Sun maidens were kissing the hills with golden color, creating a magnificent panorama while revealing the vastness of Mt Anggas. And I thought, “Nothing beats, and observe the impressive view, in time for sunrise that greets hikers as they reach the peak.” We made a series of documentation while staying an hour at the sun deck.

At 06:03 in the morning, we continued our trip before the great sun touches us with his warm temperature. We descended few steps, and ascended few yards from the view deck to the next stop- another range with the solitary tree. It was heart-wrenching seeing huge and aged stones shattered into pieces because of irresponsible hikers’ doing, unfamiliar with the destination, or without getting a well-informed guide just to unlock the so-called “personal achievement”.

Then we continued our journey, tracking the uneven terrain while the brightness of the sun illuminate the surrounding. The path took us down along this hill side, and in a blink of a second, our colleague unintentionally fell from our track. By mistake, he put one foot forward at this unstable rock. Instinct has brought me to accelerate, hurdled, and grasp his arm however, my left foot locked down and he started to roll down 15 feet or so from our ground. For an instant, the accident took some of our colleagues stunned, fortunately our friend held a strong grass root saving him from additional and serious mischief. Our guides then hastily descended to assist him. With bruises, and few cuts, the fallen comrade risen up and gave us an acceptable cue.

Returning to the group, we resumed our hike while carrying the idea of being safe. A later after, we found ourselves traversing another cliff side pathway. This time with the notion of being vulnerable of misfortune, we cautiously cross the uneasy trail while hand-holding the firm rocks and successfully reached the other point.

Ten minutes after, we have reached this part of the track that they coined as the “Spartan trail”, the name was derived from the movie 300 where Spartan warriors traverse to a rough trail and prickly plants. Good thing, this “Spartan trail” is not a challenging one, but the fields were abundant with knee-high grass, a decent foreground to do a photo op…. we then managed.

From the blooms-edge grass of the Spartan trail and while the space shortened, we found a shelter from the heat of the sun, a steep slope and a ground covered with thin-like tree trunks, we had arrived at 07:09 in the morning and had taken our siesta. The guides together with Engr Raul introduced us to this lemongrass beverage, a thirst-quencher which we managed to drink….. I was relieved!

After an hour of rest, we continued our way to this peak where I should have made an aerial survey of the mountain ranges. Unfortunately, after three attempts of moving up through the air at approximately 20-30 feet under control, failure was unpredictable- the screen indicates lost signal, I lost hope and gave up.

The journey continued while our liquid refreshments are more than half empty after consuming earlier- a need to drink and be hydrated. This time, I can feel the warmth of the glaring sun that penetrates us, my knees are tired while my back is yelling for rest. Then, Engr. Raul gave us two options: The first one is traveling the lengthy path, or crossing the shorter track with rough edges. We chose the long way while our colleagues Randale who is a seasoned trekker and Frank, a German outdoor enthusiast had chosen the latter.

Observing the ground, the mineral rocks brought my notion to an era of my Eldfather’s olden days. I thought for an instant the stories of him about a mountain course of rough ranges, and steep slopes from a day hike or two that starts at their place in Linangcayan, Manticao bound to Cagayan de Oro navigating the Naawan-Alubijid-Gitagum-Opol course with this mountain way. That was a tough route to follow but as we ascended to this vertical stairway of uneven rocks, the tale whispers of excitement and authenticity.

We continued that trail down under, few mounts, then descended until we had reached a portion of downhill where a chapel is located, a sanctuary to those who need rest from hours of exhaustion. We then had our morning meals at a spot while entertaining ourselves with a refreshing landscape as background. At 10:20am, we decided to move down to the course where they said waterfalls can be found. Few yards, we had arrived to this spot, it wasn’t a waterfall but more of a stream-like descending water about hip high. We followed the water course, and reached a steep drop in the course of the stream of approximately 6-7 high, and saw a small hut. Randale hastily assisted us with our stuff descending the vertical drop with his parkour skills. The path going down was a challenging one for us, good thing my brother Phillip saw another way. While Marlon, Mr Raul, Frank, and the guides bathed at the stream, we decided to have our breaks climbing few heartbeats, and reached the shack that served as a temporary shelter to us, drained hikers.

While my father is proud of our newest achievement (with Phillip Dy), how I wish my father's father will see this trail again where he had used to traverse long ago. It seems like I am more excited to share this experience to him like a story teller.

TOUCHDOWN:

Our MT ANGGAS TRIP is part of the Camera Club of Cagayan de Oro's Photography Trips in partnership with Nyor's Playground.

MT ANGGAS is a mountain range located in Barangay Gregorio Pelaez, Gitagum, Misamis Oriental, 20-30 minutes from Cagayan de Oro and another 20-30 minutes from the National Highway. There are several jump off points that offers different trail paths. Some prefer the trail that directs them to the highest peak of Mt Anggas where a Electrical Tower is situated while others chose the trail starting from the Sun Deck.

For your safety, and convenience, always get a professional trek guide. The guides from Nyor's Playground handles most of the Anggas Hiking Trips. DO NOT GO ON YOUR OWN! (Unless you want to get lost). Seriously, you may want to reach them through Engr Raul Ilogon: 0916-433-3878.

The best time to go there are as follows:

- At 02:30 in the afternoon for the sunset with overnight camp

- At 03:00 in the morning for the sunrise (day tour)

The Evening Hours at Vigan’s Hotel Luna:
The First-class and Only Museum Hotel in the Philippines

It was a dark moonless night when we reached the access doors of this building from a palatable evening meal at the local restaurant few steps away. The heavy rainfall provided us the intention to check out what lies inside the establishment while waiting for the rain to subside.

As we enter the unfamiliar domain, the concierge staff greeted us with cordiality allowing ourselves to find warmness inside the room from the cold outdoor atmosphere. A few minutes after, I walked around the lobby hall and stumbled upon a gallery of different work of art from renowned artists. As an artist myself (I used to sketch, draw, and paint), I was amazed seeing the works of Arturo Luz, Benedicto Cabrera’s “Three Women”, and the intricate sculpture-masterpiece of Napoleon Abueva, the Philippines’ National Artist for Sculpture, and Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture. The sculpture that is made from indigenous hardwood materials carved into a remarkable artwork is said to depict the sun with rays that installed in the interior surface.

THE HISTORY OF THE OLD HOUSE-TURNED INTO A MUSEUM

Like most of the hotels in Vigan City, Hotel Luna is previously a Spanish ancestral house turned into a museum. Hotel Luna was built in 1882 by Don Jose Florentino, a wealthy man as a wedding present to his lovely daughter, Doña Carmen Florentino when she married Don Honorato Romero Encarnacion in 1883. Accordingly, Don Encarnacion then remarried and had two daughters Doña Mercedes Encarnacion who married Victorino Florentino that inherited the Spanish-inspired property. Encarnacion Ancestral House, the former name of Hotel Luna was then sold prior to 1990 to Benigno Que fulfilling a request after years of passing the property to their heir.

In 2013, the property was acquired by the Stern Real Estate Development Corporation, later known as AHMGI also known as Artstream Hospitality Management Group, Inc. the same group that brought Hotel Rembrandt Manila into existence. AHMGI then restored and rebuild the Encarnacion Ancestral House that took them for about 15 months on its transformation into a first-class museum hotel property with the city’s conservation guidelines, and later named it to Hotel Luna opening its doors to the public last February 08, 2014 and following the original Spanish colonial designs that can be found in Vigan City while preserving the historical integrity of the ancestral house.

Today, Hotel Luna is one of the flagship destination hotels of AHMGI, and being a partner of World Hotels, it is considered among the best hotels in the world.

Inside the lobby hall, visitors will be greeted with these impressive artworks, and that Swarovski Chandelier.

As I continued my way while walking around with wonderment together with my Misamis Oriental Tourism, Culture, Heritage, and Art Council colleagues, I found myself startled with this chandelier that is said to be made up of Swarovski crystals that came all the way from Italy.

With much pleasure, I continued my journey and ascended to the 2^nd level of the museum through the original “Encarnacion” kamagong wooden floor, the escalera or the wide mahogany as the main stairway and when I reached the upper floor at this grand sala and seeing the ceiling decorated by wooden medallions that were carefully crafted by artisans from Betis, Pampanga, I was again caught with enchantment, and the atmosphere immediately brought me back to an era of the past. I was totally impressed and I could not contain my amazement with the right words seeing the paintings and artworks that features the country’s national artists, sculptors, painters, and masters of their own field of expertise such as Napoleon Abueva, Mauro Malang Santos, Vicente Manansala, Romulo Olazo, Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, Abdulmari Imao, Ramon Orlina, Benedicto Cabrera, and Fernando Amorsolo.

I was at the peak of my astonishment when I was stunned with the 1883 artwork called “La Mandolinera” a portrait of a female mandolin player by Juan Luna himself, one of the greatest Filipino artists in history and also a native Ilocano. This artwork that occupied a wall in the grand salon is said to be an original painting using the oil in canvas medium that measures 80.3 cm x 65.2 cm.

On the other side of the hallway can be found other artworks from different Filipino artists including a replica of Juan Luna’s most famous work, Spoliarium.

Later then, we found ourselves at the Comedor Restaurant, the elegant main dining hall that features original brick walls that dated 1800 on arches, and other paintings. On the other part of the museum is the Chula Saloon Bar, a chill-out lounge that offers the finest selection of liquors such as the Cognac Henessy XO at P15,000.00 per bottle or P865 per shot, Remy Martin VSOP at P4,000.00 per bottle or P300 per shot, or the Glenfiddich at P8,500.00 per bottle or P385 per shot, and Macallan at P8,000.00 per bottle. Chula Saloon Bar was created and designed by the company head and also Ilocos Sur’s Congressman Mr Eric Singson and can be found a replica of the controversial Parisian Life (1892).

The moment we stepped outside the property, I felt blessed on having been given a chance of witnessing the grand collection of renowned artists in the country that offers in Hotel Luna, the best example of the promotion of cultural artifacts through preservation, and conservation.

Tinagong Dagat: Uncovering the Pristine Shoreline of Islas de Gigantes

Few minutes from Antonia Island, we continued our way to this secreted shoreline known by the local dwellers as Tinagong Dagat.

The name Tinagong Dagat which means a Hidden Sea or Ocean was said to originate from where it is located, obviously unnoticeable from far distance. The secluded beachfront is literally shrouded by a sizable limestone walls standing atop with lush flora and provide travelers and adventures-alike a scene worth experiencing.

Tinagong Dagat is also known as the Little Boracay of the Islas de Gigantes. It was compared to the famous Boracay Island as the sand within its coastline is said to be similar thus, offering powdered-like white sand.

The further our guide pointed us to that direction where Tinagong Dagat is situated, the more interested I am to witness, and experience it firsthand.

While arriving at Tinagong Dagat, our local guide recommended us to take off our slippers which I gladly accepted. I left my Billabong slippers and descended from the vessel hurriedly. When my uncovered feet landed to its unfamiliar seawater with the warmth of the midday, the enthusiasm transported me back to the familiarity of Boracay Island. I walked through its pristine shoreline and acquainted myself with the unclouded aquamarine to bright turquoise waters fronting the coastline. I made a handful grab of the sand from the clear water and felt the fine beach sand. I examined it thoroughly and could somehow determine that Tinagong Dagat although said to be similar to that of the famous Boracay Island, presents another pristine shorelines.

Boracay’s fine sands can be described as powder-like-becoming-creamy-white-pastes once mixed with the sea water while Tinagong Dagat’s beach sand is less powdered however it is much finer compared to all the islands we visited enclosed with sand.

After discovering with certainty and without hesitation, I decided to take a dip instead, and simply enjoying the pristine environment. The seawater is calm, and refreshing although it’s already noon time giving an ambiance of relaxation. I looked up the entire domain with the richness of flora as its background and thought, “If people are just open to the idea, this could be a destination itself without comparing to other scenic spots.”

Meanwhile, I was saddened seeing one of the boulders located at the right corner of the shore which was crafted by the selfishness of human habitats- a self-proclaimed sign of greediness.

After dipping the saltwater, we decided to onboard and continued our journey to the next Island- Isla de Gigantes Sur (South Gigantes Island).

Lambug Beach in Badian: An Unspoiled Long stretch Shoreline at the South

The southern part of Cebu has been synonymous to the adventures of Alegria’s canyoneering, whale shark watching in Oslob, scuba diving or basking at the long strip of white sand of Moalboal, and hiking the ruggedly striking mountains of Osmena Peak. This part of its territorial domain is absolutely filled with wide array and diverse activities, and anyone who plans to travel to the South will surely encounter pleasure beyond experience.

Aside from these well-famed destinations can also be found the unspoiled long stretch shoreline of Barangay Lambug, the uncrowded beachfront getaway to the South located in the municipality of Badian.

After scouting, and spoiling ourselves with waterfalls for three days while chasing the wonders of Badian, Alegria, and Samboan, I asked my cousin Lester for a neighboring coastline, and he pointed us to this route.

Roughly 16 minutes travel from Sta Filomena, Alegria to the main highway going to Lambug Beach riding motorcycles with a moderate to high speed, and passing through the 8-10 minutes narrow yet asphalted road of cornfields and golf course, I found myself together with my companions wandering the peaceful coral white sand beach of Lambug.

“Ah! So this is Lambug Beach”, I said to myself, glancing my watch that ticks at 04:05 mid-afternoon while strolling around the sandbar that spells laid back from the noise of metropolitan Cebu.

“Kuya Jun, let’s continue walking to that spot as it offers much finer sands.” My cousin Lester suggested. While arriving to this part, I had noticed how this long stretch coastline surprised me with powdery-like sands. And to my amazement, I found myself quietly dipping at the ocean. We stayed at Lambug for few moments, and decided to continue our path to other destination- Moalboal before sun down.

During the course of our journey, a quick remembrance caught my attention; “The tropical warmth, calming atmosphere, and turquoise water facing the Island of Negros in the western part serenade my experience.”

TOUCHDOWN:

The beach is somehow far from the main road. Once you see a Filipino-Korean Restaurant located at the right side of the highway in Badian, follow the path that leads to Lambug. Once you reached a Golf Course, follow the narrow yet asphalted road. Signs going to this coastline are installed for an easy travel. According to my cousin, if you’re traveling with a private 4-wheel transportation, travel time from Alegria to Lambug beach will lead you to a 15-minute ride. In our case while riding a private motorcycle, we reach the destination an approximate of 25 minutes or so from Sta Filomena.

The beach is for the public to enjoy, which means, there is no entrance fee. Additionally, tents are said to be allowed. Cottages, and other accommodations are also situated in the area.

“Solely under the management of the municipality of Badian as per approved “special agreement on protected areas” (SAPA) issued by the DENR.

No one is currently authorized to collect entrance fees, parking fees, and beach usage fees. Unless official receipt is duly issued by the LGU-Badian’s authorized personnel.”

The First Appearance of Light at the Sinking Bell Tower Of Laoag City

In the quiet hour just after dawn, we arrived at Laoag City from the historic city of Vigan, more than an hour travel time on a private transportation. Our Coach Captain Vince decided to have our first meal of the day on a fast-food restaurant near the Capitol to have a glimpse of the nearby locality.

As I was about to unload and fix my camera equipment while my other colleagues went directly to this renowned fast-food dining place, another fellow with the name of Mr Raul Ilogon, an iconic Storyteller from our province went straight with enthusiasm to this mysterious place I have yet to discover. According to him, it has been decades since the last time he set foot to this destination.

As I went hastily through his path with eagerness while crossing the unfamiliar way, the spirit of curiosity brought me to the Sinking Bell Tower of Laoag City with the first appearance of light painted the sky with artistic canvas. “This would be an image worth documenting”, I said to myself while being amazed to this wonderful surprise.

My wonderment went closer to this outstanding landmark which elevated my interest. The historic Bell Tower of Laoag City is believed to be sinking at a rate of an inch a year earning its “sinking” reputation. Accordingly, the mystery behind this occurrence can be traced back through time when it was built on sandy grounds by the Augustinians in 1612. The Baroque-inspired structure with a 90-meter (300 feet) foundation or others categorized it with a 45-meter elevation would be too heavy to accommodate its weight with the base.

Stories from the earlier time states that any person riding a horse could possibly enter the Bell Tower’s vaulted entrance effortless. Today, even an individual with a normal height has to stoop just to enter its doorway.

The Sinking Bell Tower is part of the property of the St. William’s Cathedral, about 85 meters to the south of its location, and said to be the farthest bell tower positioned from its church. The construction is said to be a typical Baroque structures found in Ilocos region. The Bell Tower is made of locally manufactured bricks. These pieces of bricks then joined by the syrup and juice of sablot leaves with lime, sand and stucco plaster. The base with its massive rounded columns on each corner supports the graduated upper tiers noted for its graceful curved buttresses and corner. The tower is crowned by a double dome topped with a cross.

Access to the top is through a vaulted tunnel leading to a winding wooden stairway. At the top are 6 bells of different sizes. A big bell on the third tier when rung can be heard in nearby towns.

As we left the tallest bell tower in the country on our way to the nearby marker, I brought with me the stories of the Bell Tower, an impeccable tale that tainted only by the passing time but will never sink nor faded.

The Sinking Bell Tower of Laoag is part of the official itinerary during our trip to Ilocos. It is located at the Northern part of Ilocos. From Vigan City, we traveled before sunrise an approximate of an hour and 15 minutes moving at moderate to high speed with a private van transport. The Sinking Bell Tower is one of the first landmarks to be noticed upon entering the city proper.

Islas de Gigantes’ Isla Pulupandan and its Solitary Tree

It was 8:35 in the morning when we sail our way into the Gigantes Group of Islands from the port of Bancal in the town of Carles which is said to be the most convenient jump off point and fastest way to get to our destination.

The warmth of the morning light whispering the approaching wind, and the sound of the vessel pushes through our way to the first stop- the Isla Pulupandan as the local dwellers call it.

On our way to the first island while seeing from afar, travelers will certainly notice this islet with a lone coconut tree that spells nothing but peacefulness amidst solitarily. Then, we landed safely at Isla Pulupandan from an hour of sea travel.

In the calmness of the morning, we descended from our boat with anticipation and quickly checked out what lies within this islet. Anyone can observed this coconut tree that is said to be a lone survivor from the wrath of super typhoon Haiyan with the local name of Yolanda. Accordingly, there used to be 2 coconut trees however one remained and escaped the devastation of that terrible days. Although it paid an awful price, this solitary survivor standing dazed in the middle of the islet has become an image of the island, an own identity that represents exclusivity.

Isla Pulupandan, a small off-white with a slight tint of yellow coral-like island is used to be a traditional resting ground for fisher folks with nothing but a shanty and the lone tree in the middle. However, at one end of the islet stand atop the amazing sea stacks. These rocks provide a panoramic sight of this less than a hundred meter islet, and surprising perspective of the adjacent islands.

From there, we had our photo documentation, and after staying more than half an hour, we decided to go to our next destination- the Cabugao Gamay Island.

Passing By the Colossal Rock Formation and Enchanting Tangke Saltwater Pool

Decades ago before the beauty of the Islas de Gigantes in the Northeastern coast of the Panay Island was yet to be discovered by popularity lies a myth that was carried on and passed through oral communication from generations to generations.

This tale is sure to enchant anyone’s inquisitiveness and receive the authenticity of the myth while establishing its original form through folklores and traditions.

The legend tells about the story of the childless couple who endlessly asked for a child in a place called Punta Bulakawe in the town of Carles. The couple was blessed with a son who grew up too fast that all men were only as tall as his knees- the Giant was named Higante Tay-og who decided to remain his adolescence life in a mountain known as the Beheya Hill.

The folklore continues with Higante Tay-og falling in love with a woman that came from an unknown foreign land with her grandmother; the attractive lady was called Prinsesa Maganda. Later on, the two became lovers and was about to get married on a full moon. However, on the day of their wedding while Higante Tay-og was busy preparing at the top of the Beheya Hill, a sailboat carrying pirates came aboard, went to the shanty and grabbed the princess. The townsfolks engaged and battled the pirates with no success. When Higante Tay-og came, one pirate planted an arrow to Prinsesa Maganda’s heart which eventually killed her.

Higante Tay-og slowly brought the body of Prinsesa Maganda to his home. With sadness, and anger of what had happened, he picked up the wedding gifts, his stuff, and threw them one by one to the sea, these became the Islands of Gigantes. Then, he hacked himself into two which later became the Higante Norte and Higante Sur after kissing goodbye Prinsesa Maganda who eventually became the Island of Higantuna.

Remnants from these stories can also be followed by coffins found inside Bakwitan Cave that contained gigantic sets of human bones wherein the name Gigantes was derived during the Spanish colonial period. Gigantes was first called Sabuluag, or Salauag which is said to be the name of a species of tree endemic to the islands.

THE BEYOND BELIEF EXPERIENCE

“Look at your right side, that is Tangke’s location”, in non-verbatim, our guide pointed us the entry point of the enchanted Tangke Saltwater Pool.

It was past midday at exactly 1:18pm when we reached the vicinity after dipping the turquoise water and fine sand of the Tinagong Dagat (Hidden Beach) also known as Little Boracay. Passing through these colossal part of the Isla Gigantes Sur (South Gigantes Island) provided me a chance to encounter the immense charm of this part that is yet to been unveiled. Its concealed splendor captured the fascinated attention of everyone on the vessel, I couldn’t contain my enthrallment into a sentence at that moment and for an instant, the only word I was able to pronounce was “WOW”.

What was once a hidden part of the Gigantes Sur has now been uncovered by risk and exposure. Oral tradition says that this part was discovered by a local dweller who braved himself ascending to the rock-strewn, and unfamiliar territory while witnessing beyond belief the mysterious attraction, a natural pool or some sort that was later known as “Tangke”.

The name “tangke” which means a tank was coined by this local, a representation to the appearance comparable to a tank. Accordingly, when the tide is high, the seawater fills up the shape-like tank producing a hole within the rock’s borders that serves as its pillars. The result of this existence is the natural pool or others call it as a lagoon.

The acquaintance to this enchanting marvel should somehow be experienced by ourselves, however time did not permit us to do so, and an instruction was mandated by the local government for a temporary closure.

Meanwhile, as we continue our adventure, I was still enthralled by the natural existing karst rocks of steep, and vertical columns with lush flora and an avian species flying freely to the pillars that I hardly noticed the mending disenchantment of the Tangke’s familiarity. These sea stacks are said to be formed by the wind and water overtime, and is called the process of coastal geomorphology.

The force of the sea crashing against these rocks created spectacular forms that causes adventurers like me to interpret random images of light and shadow- a term known as Pareidolia. Then I noticed a Cavalier guarding the island boundaries, a turtle-like creature safeguarding the entry point of Tangke Saltwater Pool, a carnivorous dinosaur among others, or “the mythical Giant from the legend communicates to me through these cognitive phenomenon”, then I thought “these geological landform are absolutely breathtaking!”

A moment later, we found ourselves at the docking area with the welcoming warmth of the midday, traversing the tranquil seawater of the South Gigantes Island while sighting on a distant the “bapor-bapor”, the live rocks shaped like a ship and said to be the pirate’s vessel.

Cabugao Gamay Island- The Most Photographed Uninhabited Island that make up the Islas de Gigantes

As the sun gleams on my face, and the crisp fresh air of the ocean embraced me, a sense of excitement caught me off guard. Few meters from our sea vessel, I could see the most photographed island that make up the Islas de Gigantes.

The sense of enthusiasm increases as we finally reached the docking point of this popular island. We landed on the island’s western shores at 10:33 in daylight coming over from Isla Pulupandan in roughly 25 minutes.

Cabugao Gamay as what the locals call it, is one of the fourteen islands that make up the Gigantes Group of Islands. It is located in the Northeastern coast of Panay. Located about two kilometers from the Island of Gigantes Sur, the Cabugay Gamay is the most photographed uninhabited island in Northeastern Iloilo and politically administered by the Municipality of Carles. The iconic island of Cabugao Gamay was ranked 14^th in the list of 20 from the ranking made by Beautiful Destinations- the largest lifestyle and travel community on social media.

THE LEGEND AND ITS MEANING:

The name of the Island can be traced by the legend that lies within the Islas de Gigantes (Islands of the Giants). Accordingly, Cabugao Gamay means “small pomelo”, which symbolizes one of the offerings that became the island during the giant’s supposed wedding as the folklore speaks.

Seen from far distance, Cabugao Gamay’s peculiar shaped- two hills on both ends of the island linked by a coral white sandbar with several tropical trees such as Coconut, and Indian Almond trees also known as Talisay, is guaranteed to entice everyone's attention. The entire island is enclosed by tiny bleached-pebble sands surrounded by the inviting turquoise waters.

Upon reaching the shoreline, we couldn’t contain our excitement and was about to begin our journey on climbing our way up to the viewing deck, however we let other joiners to do it first. The trek uphill was used to be a bit challenging as one of our colleagues stated because of the natural rocky formation but wooden railings and several floorboards have been set up for tourists for an easy ascend. An interesting formation of Karst rocks of limestones and dolomites with sharp edges is somehow eye-catching of this island facing north of the open seas. At the other edge of the Cabugao Gamay is the larger chunk of the island, a rocky hill roofed with dense flora. At the peak of the viewing deck lies the defining feature of the Island, the iconic view that made the Islas de Gigantes a renowned destination. The observatory offers a great perspective of the entire Cabugao Gamay making it as part of a traveler’s journey.

A few minutes, we found ourselves at the peak of the Karst rocks unable to separate the warmness of the upcoming noon time to that of our own excitement, then we acknowledged our solo photo opt, and had our group shot taken by the accommodating guide. Afterwards, I decided myself to descend to catch up the remaining period to do an aerial documentation while my CDO BLOGGERS colleagues continue their photo documentation.

Then, after taking an aerial video clips, I noticed these attention-grabbing landmarks made up of smooth and uneven coral stones. A number of these cairns can be seen throughout the shoreline. According to the locals, these cairns are used to give their offerings, in return, to give them blessings during sea expeditions.

Inasmuch as we wanted to stay longer, a moment later, our guide called us to continue our journey to the next island- The Bantique Sandbar.

And I thought for a moment, “Seeing the vastness and remoteness of the Cabugao Gamay Island with my own eyes inheriting its splendid charm to the legend of the Islands of the Giants, is a remarkable experience- a truly tropical paradise.”

A Sunday Visit at the Beach of Consuelo, Cantilan, Surigao del Sur

The province of Surigao has been a nature's sanctuary, an oasis of magnificent destinations ready to be explored. With its myriad of natural and impressive beauty, and offers splendid experiences, it has been synonymous to enchantment, wondrous, and magnificent; explore the Enchanted River of Hinatuan or commune to the wonders of Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig, take a break at the U-shaped Cagwait Beach or count the Islets of Britannia in San Agustin from daybreak to sundown, birdwatching at PICOP or try Cantilan and Lanuza's extreme sports such as the skimboarding and surfing. Somehow, Surigao is a traveler's paradise.

Apart from these well-known attractions, there are also places that are worth the visit in the province simply to be delighted either with families and friends, sing songs together, or getting lazy sun-kissing without the bustling crowd especially on a weekend.

It has been our tradition to spend the last week of Lent at the hometown of my wife in Surigao del Sur. We then normally celebrate the season of the Eastertide on a sunday at any beach destination within Surigao. This year, we decided to go and check out the beach of Consuelo, a barangay located in a 2nd class municipality of Cantilan- considered as the "Cradle of Towns" in Surigao del Sur.

We traveled an approximate of an hour from our place in Carmen going to Consuelo while riding a tri-cab with a moderate speed. Don’t you know that Surigao is well-known for the Skylab transportation? It’s a form of public transport where passengers are seated to the modified benches from side to side attached to the motorcycle.

When we arrived at Consuelo, we looked for a beach resort nearby and was blessed to have one despite the holiday which was prepared for us by the local residents. We were greeted with a good weather, and the scent of the ocean breeze is welcoming. “Ah, what a great Sunday!” I whispered while smelling the wind.

A few moments after unpacking our stuff, my little one hurriedly invited me to take a stroll at the shoreline which I happily acknowledged. From this point of our tête-à-tête or the father-daughter bonding experience with the sun’s sweltering heat, I noticed that the islets facing the oceanfront can be reached through a walk as the tide is still low, and I thought for a minute, “How about a walk to remember?” which my lovely wife responded with doubt, “Can we?”. Good thing my brother in law said with excitement, “Sure! After taking our lunch” which our parents prepared sumptuous meals for us to consume- the locally done Kinilaw with malasugue fish, Grilled pork and fish also known as Sinugbang baboy, and sinugbang isda, complemented with buko juice, pineapples and watermelons, and one of my favorite kakanin “biko”.

Meanwhile, while my little one was busy with her imaginative thoughts by building her own sandbar castle, I managed to take a sneak peek of the facing islets, and checked out the vicinity through an aerial survey at 266 feet above. From what I had observed, I was amazed that the three fronting islets can certainly be reached by passing the low-tide seawater. My brother-in-law and my wife’s kin who were similarly enthusiastic, tried passing the seawater and managed to reach the islet while checking out the vicinity.

After examining the surrounding, the two of them went back to where we were staying and affirmed that going to the islet is somehow safe. This has to be done as my little one wanted to check it herself as well. A moment or two, we decided to walk by, try it, and found ourselves passing the seawater. Few meters from the shoreline, we noticed that marine plants are abundant together with a school of fish. My little one was so excitedly and cheerful; we managed to reach the islet safely.

When we arrived at this islet, I have also noticed that different bird species are thriving such as the White-collared Kingfishers, Terns, Frigatebirds, Egrets, even a Brahminy Kite who was circling the shoreline suspecting that my drone was also a feathered species I imagined. Additionally, I stealthily managed to take a photo documentation of the Eastern Reef-Egret on dark phase (Egretta alba) while the bird was having its loud guttural croak. On the other hand, I had also observed that these islets were shaped by the sea waves crafted through time resulting to the wonderful rock formations.

I was about to do an aerial survey again but as the wind is strengthen from moderation, and the sea is about to rise, we just took few snapshots, and decided to go back to the beachfront. And when we finally arrived at the shore, the sea was about to escalate its tide.

With contentment, I found myself swimming its current, singing our favorite songs, having fun, and appreciating the simplest of things with my family. And while enjoying the approaching sunset I said to myself, “They are what I cherish the most, not letting those special times pass us by unnoticed”.

AirAsia Celebrated the Expansion of Its Domestic Network with New Flights- Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, and Clark

AirAsia, the world's best low cost airline for ten consecutive years by Skytrax marked another milestone last October 28, 2018 as it inaugurated its maiden flight to Cagayan de Oro from Manila. AirAsia also celebrated the expansion of its domestic network with addition of new flights from Cagayan de Oro to Cebu, Iloilo, and Clark.

Arriving at Laguindingan Airport, the main airport that serves the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, and Lanao del Norte, including the cities of Cagayan de Oro, and Iligan, AirAsia's maiden flight was piloted by Captain Dexter Comendador, the airline's flying Chief Executive Officer while using the brand new aircraft- the Airbus A320 which arrived a day ago in the country. AirAsia flight Z2 691 left Manila's NAIA Terminal 4 at 08:00am, and safely landed in Laguindigan Airport at 09:30am with full-seated load.

The newest A320 Airbus is said to fit with wing-tip devices or sharklets that enable savings of 4% in fuel consumption that corresponds to an annual carbon reduction of around 1,000 tons per aircraft. The "sharklets" also help reducing the fuel burn and emissions by improving the aircraft's aerodynamics.

The fleet was greeted with the traditional Water Cannon Salute, and the passengers of the said flight were welcomed with the brand's freebies, and necklaces from Department of Tourism Region 10. As part of the program, passengers witnessed the traditional Higaonon dance showcasing the richness cultural tradition of the region. The program was hosted by Nicole Abas-Datayan, a local celebrity, and also led by the province's Board Member Ms Nancy Madjos representing Governor Yevgeny "Bambi" Emano, the Cagayan de Oro City Councilor Mr Ian Nacaya representing Mayor Oscar "Oca" Moreno. Joining the program were the Department of Tourism Regional Director Ms Marie Elaine Salvaña-Unchuan, and airport OIC Mr Wilfredo Encinas.

Our newest routes connecting Northern Mindanao to Cebu and Iloilo in Visayas and to Manila and Clark in Luzon will provide the much-needed domestic connections as there are definitely great tourism and business potentials here.
