I have installed it in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin (32 bit), the application itself apparently works fine but I haven't flash any devices (yet).

heimdall-frontend_1.3.2_i386.deb

If the shortcut is not automatically created, you have to launch it manually via terminal with heimdall-frontend command.

4 Gnome Shell Extensions To De-clutter Your Top Panel

Gnome Shell by default only have always present top panel to make more room for your working windows. But by doing so, almost every information shown in top panel, thus making it cluttered and crowded.

These following Gnome Shell extensions will make your top panel more spacious and less cluttered. Tried and works in Ubuntu 12.04.

Activities Button Text
this extension enables you to rename the long and quite useless "Activities" text on your upper left screen to anything you like.
After installing this extension go to installed extension page to configure it, there you can rename it as you like. For demonstration I rename mine to "apn".
Status only icon
another almost useless text in top panel is "your name" in upper right screen, unless of course you tend to forget your own name. This extension will eliminate the name but retain the status icon.
Quit Button and IM Menu
Your computer state is not your social network state, this extension will separate these two into two icons : social network icon and power icon.
Remove Accessibility
if you don't need the Accessibility feature then lose it with this extension

Shown below my top panel with these four extensions installed (and one extension to show the desktop) click for larger resolution if you like.

There you go, four extensions to make your top panel clean and spacious.

Ubuntu And Stock Photography

Lately, I've been busy taking, editing and uploading photographs to stock photography sites such as : Dreamstime, Fotolia and istockphoto.

This post is not about my photographic journey but rather how Ubuntu helps me a lot with two great applications that are already provided in its repository i.e: Shotwell and Gimp.

I use Shotwell to browse my collection, which I prefer than gThumb which is very slow at loading thumbnails.
For light editing I use Gimp. Stock photography usually only need just a tiny bit of Levels, Curves, Unsharpen and Saturation adjustment or in some cases object isolation (like wooden mortar and pestle picture below). Gimp is very capable and more than enough for stock photography.

I already sold my two pictures (1, 2) and to think that someone actually willing to pay to use my photographs feels so flattering and addicting, so much more than Facebook's Like.
Here are some photographs in my portfolio which is less than 40 pictures as of now. Hopefully or rather workinghardfully I can double my portfolio by the end of May.

Fix For gThumb+Facebook : Application does not have permission for this action

gThumb makes uploading many photos to Facebook easier and faster. But not without hiccups though.

This morning I found "Application does not have permission for this action" error message. After a quick trial and error setting change, I found out that gThumb can not upload to Facebook album with public as privacy setting.

As soon as I changed it to other privacy setting, I can upload just fine.

It is not a fix actually, but a workaround of a bug.

I use gThumb 2.14.2 on Ubuntu 11.10

How To Create Virtual PDF Printer In Ubuntu 11.10

Many of newer applications e.g Google Chrome include Print to PDF or Print To File on their printing menu, but not all of them are.

I usually don't need this feature, but just now I need to print a PDF file from a Windows application on Wine for tax reporting documents, I need to review it before actually print it. And it works great, even with Wine applications.

This is how to create virtual PDF printer on Ubuntu 11.10 :

install cups-pdf ( from Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic)
open System Settings > Printers,
it should now list PDF automatically as available printer
to use it edit Printer setting on your application setting and choose PDF as print target (you may have to set it as default printer for certain Wine applications to work)
default "printing location" is at /home/your-user-name/PDF

Window List and NetSpeed | Gnome Shell Extension

I used to have Avant Window Navigator installed to have quick view of opened applications and a network speed monitoring applet.

It was actually confusing to have two panels instead of just one. So imagine my delight when I found there are Gnome Shell extensions for window list and network monitoring

To show list of running applications there are Window List extension and Window Icon List, for network speed monitoring applet I installed NetSpeed extension.

Installed Window List extension looks like this :

The icons are too big for my taste, therefore I like Window Icon List better since it shows little and neat icons and not just that it comes with handy Show Desktop shortcut.

Unfortunately if you have many apps opened, the many icons will overlap Gnome Shell clock, the fix is to install Frippery Move Clock extension to move Gnome Shell Clock to the right of the screen. Problem solved.

With Window Icon List and Frippery Move Clock installed, my desktop looks like this :

Install Latest Wine In Ubuntu Safely With Playonlinux

Wine 1.5 comes and said to brings many improvements, but if you are not sure if this version (or any version of Wine) will make or break your current applications, it is recommended to use Playonlinux, with this application you can have multiple versions of Wine on your Ubuntu.

From the oldest to newest Wine, they are all just a download away.

First of all download and install latest Playonlinux here.

After that go to Tools > Manage Wine Versions, and you'll have this window.

Here you can pick as many Wine versions you would use as you like (as of this writing it's Wine 1.5.0-raw3).

How To Use Line In Ubuntu

If you are Android or iOS users, you might know an application called Line is. For those who don't, Line is a chat application from Naver, better and faster than Yahoo's, imo. You might want to check it out on your app store/market.

Recently, Naver provided Mac, Windows desktop application and web app. To use Line on desktop and web apps, you must already register your email first within mobile application.

Sadly the Windows version is not usable on Ubuntu+Wine.

My last resort was the web app, and the obstacle (or the clue) is, it only works on Android or iOS browsers.

So I launched Chrome, install User-Agent Switcher extension and then set it to Android browser - go to Line web app and voila Line on Ubuntu.

How Ubuntu Affects My Next Phone Purchase

I was planning on buying an Android mobile device and considering between these three devices : Samsung Galaxy W, Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V or Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Wi-Fi.
I know...I know ...tablet and phone is not exactly apple to apple choices, these choices are more on the price range. What I need is an Android device that would work as stock online trading and short writing platform and now I am torn between pocketability and spacious screen to work on.
And then came Ubuntu on Android news, that made me postpone my Android device purchasing plan. Phone with Ubuntu on Android will make an awesome gadget to have and work with....or even better if Canonical just release a pure Ubuntu Phone.

Aah choices...

If Ubuntu on Android devices materialized, they won't come cheap (at least on the first release) because they need at least dual core 1 GHz CPU and Video Acceleration.

So I'll save some more and stick with my old Windows Mobile for now (sigh)...

Firefox, Chrome Reproduce Colors Differently

In my Ubuntu 11.10 system, Firefox 10 reproduce colors inaccurately, the colors are become purplish. Chrome 16.0.912.77 on the other hand does better.

As can be seen in the picture below. These two are actually a same image, but as you can see they come out differently.

Do anyone know how to fix this?

Multiple Twitter Accounts In Ubuntu | Choqok

Managing multiple Twitter accounts in Ubuntu is easy with Choqok which is available in Ubuntu repository thus making installation a breeze.

All you have to do after installation is go to Setting > Configure Choqok > Accounts and then add your other account(s) there.

I like Turpial interface much better than Choqok, but Choqok ability to manage multiple accounts is a big bonus. You can use Turpial for multiple accounts, you do have to launch separate window though.

Facebook in Ubuntu with Avant Window Navigator

My earlier post about Facebook and Ubuntu was written back in 2009. There are many changes since then, but stay connected with Facebook with Ubuntu is still easy as it was in earlier Ubuntu, only better.

One of the changes is prism no longer available in newer Ubuntu repository.

This is a refresh post, but instead of listing all the methods in single post, I try to explain in one post at a time.

Let's start with Avant Window Navigator (AWN).

There are a lot of things to like about AWN, especially if you don't like how Unity and Gnome Shell treats your shortcuts.

If you are an avid Facebook user., you'll have more reason to love AWN.

The first step is obviously to install Avant Window Navigator, and then configure it to add a Web Applet.

Then, click your new applet to choose which service you want to use, Facebook in this case.

After that, it will ask your Facebook login.

and now you get little Facebook applet on your AWN, if the appearance looks familiar it because it logs into iphone.facebook.com.

How To Use Tor With Chrome | Ubuntu 11.10

Tor is a great tool to enhance and protect your online privacy, but you already knew that. You want to know how to combine it with Google Chrome without applying Tor in system wide proxy setting , don't you? Read on.
I installed Tor, Polipo and Vidalia in Ubuntu and successfully use it with Firefox + FoxyProxy, but have no luck with Chrome + Proxy Switchy (many articles suggest this extension, so I tried it first but it doesn't work). Then, I tried other proxy manager extension, and I found the one that works with Tor. it's Proxy Anywhere.

After installation, configure it to use :

Protocol : socks5
Host : 127.0.0.1
Port : 9050

You can configure it to start automatically and/or even in Incognito mode only.

Click the small button to activate Proxy Anywhere, if it haven't already and go to https://check.torproject.org to check are you using Tor or not.

Voila, Tor in Chrome!

Works for me, your mileage may vary.

Advanced Setting in User Menu (And Fix)| Gnome Shell Extension | Ubuntu 11.10

This is a Gnome Shell extension to make Advanced Settings (aka Gnome Tweak Tool) easier to access, via shortcut in User Menu.

Here's the extension download link. Just slide to install. Make sure you already installed Gnome Tweak Tool.

If you have "Alternative Status Menu" extension installed, these two extensions may have conflicted and as the result the Advanced Settings shortcut doesn't always appear after restart in User Menu.

The latest version of Alternative Status Menu extension should fix this, but in case you haven't the latest version here's how to fix it (courtesy of erguille), apply on your own risk. I did this and it works, your mileage may vary :

Disable "Advanced Setting in UserMenu"

How To Install Journal In Gnome Shell (Ubuntu 11.10)

Journal extension is a Zeitgeist based activity-history journal that appear in gnome-shell overview tab.

To install it in Gnome Shell you need Zeitgeist to be installed first. After that visit Journal extension at extensions.gnome.org here.

Instead of manually downloading and installing the extension, this website offers automatic installation (you must use Gnome Shell when visiting this website apparently). Just slide the On/Off button, and you'll have this extension installed and activated automatically. Cool.

How To Move Message Tray to Top Panel In Gnome Shell

Been wondering how to move message tray to top panel in Gnome Shell?

Install Gnome Shell extension called gnome-shell-classic-systray from webup8 Gnome 3 PPA, this extension when activated will move icons in bottom Message Tray to top panel just like classic Gnome was, like screenshot below.

As you can see Shutter, Vidalia and Bluetooth icons are located on top panel. They used to reside in the bottom Message Tray.

Install gnome-shell-classic-systray in Ubuntu 11.10 :

Open Terminal and type :
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gnome3 sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-classic-tray

Restart Gnome Shell, either by Login Out or Press Alt+F2 and type r

There's an extension for that!

I found that the gnome shell bottom panel very interfering and annoying, especially since I use auto hide in Avant Window Navigator(AWN). There are times that I struggled just to get to AWN icons because it was blocked by occasionally popping out bottom bar.

Download and install gnome-shell-extension-remove-bottom-bar.

You have to install gnome-tweak-tool (via Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic) first, to let you install extensions and manages them.

I am a little disappointed though, a customization as simple as this should be included in basic setting, not an extension.

Photoscape 3.4 on Ubuntu with Wine 1.3.28

Photoscape is an all-in-one photo editing software that runs under Windows. I am satisifed with digiKam for light editing in Ubuntu but there is one Photoscape feature that I need, that is Frame.

Frame here, is not a decorative frame nor animation frame, but a feature to divide one page into multiple frames to be inserted/pasted with images (like a pre-made layout).

So I tried to install it, then without tweaking Photoscape 3.4 (not the latest 3.5) is running well with Wine 1.3.28. Wow.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS9) on Ubuntu 11.10

I installed Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS9) On Ubuntu 11.10 with Wine 1.3.28 on HP 540 Laptop. Unexpectedly it runs good so far, I can't believe it myself at first. Awesome.
The only problem I noticed is the sound intermittently missing.

The multi disc installation process was easy, I just have to manually mount the next disc via Wine configuration > Drives setting.

My laptop bluetooth was working just fine prior Ubuntu 11.10. Now it can't browse and receive files from my Motorola Q9h phone.

Although I don't use bluetooth that often, it's super annoying.

Here's a fix, it should be a temporary fix, because nobody wants to mess with command line just to connect to their bluetooth devices.

first install obexfs (the easiest way is via Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic) or via terminal and run this command sudo apt-get install obexfs
then make a new folder in your home directory, e,g bluemount
open terminal :

to mount : obexfs -b your:bluetooth:address ~/bluemount
to unmount : fusermount --u ~/bluemount

now your bluetooth device is browseable with nautilus
unfortunately you have to type in terminal every time you want to mount your bluetooth devices, that's why it can't be a permanent fix.

Your bluetooth address is something like : aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff . I know mine from System Settings > Bluetooth.

The new blogger.com interface has many features that is very helpful and needed. For example the Stats, now we can tell what most browser used by visitors.

And it is interesting how blogger.com list Ubuntu as a browser, see picture below.

Honest mistake? Or are there Ubuntu Browser (in Ubuntu Tablet/Phone) out there that I don't know of? :)
