They live in the heart of the Shire, they're the team behind TOWIG (The Only Way Is Garioch), but filmmakers Alstair Stewart and Andrew Forbes are saving hard to buy the gear that will take their projects to the next level. That's in today's IADF podcast.

If you have a great script then that's half the battle," says filmmaker Alistair Stewart, from Inverurie, who runs Reel Moon Productions with friend Andrew Forbes.

The pair are working and saving to make money to buy equipment that will help them improve the production quality of their films.

They've bought the Canon EOS 550D, one of the Canon DSLRs that are proving so popular among indie filmmakers around the world. That improves their video footage.

Next on their shopping list is an audio recorder. Anyone who uses a DSLR knows that you have to record sound on a separate device to get the best audio results.

Along with that there are the cables and boom pole to support the mic.

And then there's the tripod.

"When you are doing a [tripod] pan you can hear a nice..creakkkkkkk!" laughs Alistair, making a mental note to add a tripod to their shopping list.

However most pressing for the two filmmakers is to find someone with skills to operate and work behind the camera while Alistair's in front.

They need volunteer(s) to help with all sorts of production work. You'll get a sandwich for your time (they reassured me!).

They're jumping through hoops to make their productions work as best they can: TOWIG, Dream Girl and Tagged.

Wouldn't it be great if a big-hearted local business offered a couple of hundred quid to pay for an audio recorder or a tripod to help Alistair and Andrew out.

So, lads, start knocking on doors and see what help is out there.

'If you don't ask, you don't get,' my ex-wife used to say to me.

Find Reel Moon Productions here:
Facebook
You Tube

If you're an aspiring filmmaker then Mark's journey will be a fascinating insight behind the scenes of the world of moviemaking.

In this week's I Am Do Filmmaker podcast, Aberdeen filmmaker and actor Scott Ironside discusses his latest project 'Bumping Granite'.

It's a fascinating endeavour since a large part of the dialogue will be in Polish while the other half will be in Doric, the North East's own dialect.

Scott is best known for starring alongside Patrick Wight in the 2009 hit film One Day Removals, directed by Aberdeen's own Mark Stirton.

You can find more about Scott at Quick Productions, a video production company he recently founded with a couple of filmmaking colleagues.

Filmmker Anthony Baxter, the man behind the highly successful doccumentary You've Been Trumped, spoke to I Am Do Filmmaker at teh Aberdeen Actors and Directors networkingn evening at the Belmont Cinema in Aberdeen last night.

He gave an excellent presentation about his experiences with the film, and was candid about the lack of support and finance from the film sector in the UK, including Scotland.

In this podcast Anthony discusses money! You can find everything else you like about the film online, but we're filmmakers after all and we want to know these things. So no apologies to people who find this embarrassing. And thank you to Anthony for enlightening us all.

This is Part 2 of the IADF tour of Film City Glasgow.

FCG is a film production and creative media hub based in the old Govan Town Hall, on the edge of Govan and Glasgow's Digital Media Quarter.

Sarah Potter, Film City administrator, tookme on the tour, through a warren of coridors and ending up in the old theatre space.

Did I say the building used to be a theatre as well as a town hall? No? Well, all the more reason to listen to the podcasts.

There's also a bit of background on how Film City was developed.

Keep tuning into IADF podcasts.

Dons Dee Productions is an Aberdeen-based, three-man filmmaking unit, comprising, Nicci, Dave and Mike.

(Mike wasn't present for the pic, I'm afraid.)

When I met Nicci and Dave at the Aberdeen Actors and Directors networking evening at the start of March, they told me about their current production.

They say it's a story about drug addiction and how it can destroy a person's life. There was lots of chat about realism and graphic portrayal...so I think the audience will find it a difficult watch.

A timetable for the production? All I could get out of them was that they're planning to have it completed by September when Nicci is leaving the country (there's a filmmaking story there...hopefully he'll give an IADF podcast interview on that nearer the time).

Have a listen to the podcast. Nicci and Dave are good fun - thanks for giving this interview.

If wondering how to introduce yourself at the Aberdeen Actors and Directors networking event is holding you back from attending, then try Jenni Wright's approach: just get off your bum and do it!

I was speaking to someone in the downstairs bar at the Belmont, when she strode up and stood there...beside us...waiting.

In my experience, that's the best way to do it.

She's got interesting things to say about the difference between the acting/filmmaking scenes in Glasgow and Aberdeen, eg. groups don't seem to mix so much here in the North East.

I think most people would agree that's true - never mind the reason why.

That's why Kim Temnpleton and Jamie Rodden's monthly networking event is important.

Thanks, Jenni.

Dream Girl is a production written and directed by Andrew Forbes and Alistair Stewart: the two young filmmakers behind Reel Moon Productions - and the same pair behind The Only Way is Garioch (see previous post).

They gave this interview for the IADF podcast at March's Aberdeen Actors and Directors networking evening in the Belmont Cinema, Aberdeen.

They've got plenty of enthusiasm, but have they got the staying power to get through pre-, production and post-, without going bananas?

I'll catch up with them thorughout the year and check on their sanity.

Good luck to you both.

Find out more about their productions on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/reelmoonproductions

And, of course, the networking evening is all thanks to Kim Templeton and Jamie Rodden of Aberdeen Launch PAD: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Aberdeen-Launch-PAD/376315115712311

Kathy Hubbard, Head of Development for Shetland Arts, is the brains behind an exciting filmmakers' project called A Hansel of Film 2012 - part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

The Hansel of Film 2012 is a great opportunityfor filmmakers from the North East to showcase their moviemaking prowess with a film of 5mins or less.

Kathy's the first contributor to join the I Am Do Filmmaker podcast by Skype, and you may find the audio quality a little ropey, but it's all about content, isn't it.(I'll try tweaking my Skype settings and using a headset to see if I can improve things for the next Skype interview.)

She's got a good story to tell, so have a listen.

Looking for an actor for a play or a film or a voiceover? Perhaps you're looking for a film or a play to audition for? Or maybe your a techie and you want to get involved behind the scenes?

If you are, then the Aberdeen Actors and Directors Networking Evning is right up your street. It's the brain child of Aberdeen-based actors Kim Templeton and Jamie Rodden, both of whom have an eye on building a thriving community for actors and filmmakers.

This interview was recorded at the end of the evening, when only 10 remained from a total of about 50, and it gives a good picture of what happens.

So, if you thought about attending, but were not sure how you would fit in or whether people would speak to you, then don't worry: come along, say hello to people and ask who they are and what they do. It's as easy as that.
