"Guru's" or procrastination enablers?

If I followed the advice of most all of the "guru's" in the independent filmmaking and animation world I wouldn't be making anything at all...

If I wanted to go out and shoot a live action film I mean I couldn't with a $500 DSLR?! NO WAY not with rolling shutter... yep gotta get a RED or something else HELLA EXPENSIVE.. OH and its NOT a full frame sensor YEH can't make a masterpiece without a full frame sensor... H.264 compression?! NOPE no way you can make a good film with that kind of compression... gotta have some 4:4:4 uncompressed raw shit...

Because you know when you show people your film devoid of any originality, character, emotion or anything compelling at all EXCEPT for the TECHNICALLY PERFECT images they're going to remember your empty perfect image sequences forever as one of their favorite demo reels ever! OOPS I meant film!

Oh wait... these d00ds are PAID by camera/gear manufacturers to pimp the expensive shit to convince wannabe filmmakers to buy all they crap.... oh yehhhhh... and most all of em aren't making anything at all except demo reels and commercials disguised as "films"... don't listen to these SHILL's

They also are procrastination enablers... instead of going out and doing something today they convince people to WAIT until they have the "proper gear"... since most wannabe creative people are HUGE procrastinators THEY LOVE IT a GREAT MANY EXCUSES!... and the cycle continues...

If you do some tests and it works for you... DO IT... ignore all the OH NO YOU CAN'T DO THAT people out there because in the end they just want to sell you some shit.. whats new? 0_o

And if your doing 3d animation don't forget that "Pixar quality"! If it's not Pixar quality it doesn't count!

Soon enough ALL the technical hurdles will be shattered and then anyone with rudimentary technical skills will be able to create technically perfect 3d animation or live action video... so when its all "perfect" technically why would anyone want to watch any of it?

There must be something else to this whole making films thanG other than the technicalities?

Since making the new podcast is a fun thing to do AND since there isn't much at all out there for SOLO 3d animators making THEIR OWN films we're going to make more of course...

As it goes along further.. we'll make it a legit podcast that shows up in Itunes and all that... and have show notes/related links/files... and guests and all that...

Since yall are the ones listening to it and hopefully working on your own projects I'd like to know what you want from it?

My homie Josh emailed me and thought that we should make a forum for the show so interested peoples could discuss the topics there and help each other and the like...sounds like a good idea to me... what's the best way/place to do that these days?

Since Jimmy, James and I use Cinema 4d and After Effects...maybe we could share and discuss project files on the show? new techniques and tricks etc... then make them available to the listeners? Just an idea I had...

So yeh please let me know what yall think and hopefully we can make this show a helpful resource for forever alone filmmakers now and in the future.

Understanding the SCAM that is the film business

Thanks to my homie Stormko out there for always sending me links to interesting things... now I finally understand how the film business works.... check out these episodes of THE CRITICAL PATH podcast HERE and HERE

I know I'm dumb and slow for not figuring it out sooner but what do you expect? I'm drawing monsters and pushing pixels all day and night ^ ^

So in a nutshell... for tax evasion purposes and to screw people out of royalties... on the books NO FILM EVER MAKES A PROFIT... the more it makes the more they bill production expenses etc... the more the producers pay themselves...

So the bigger the budget... the more the schmucks in the suits with no real talent pay themselves... BUT before Kickstarter if you wanted to raise a budget you HAD to work with the talentless schmucks in the suits... and now you don't ^ ^

YES if you want 100 million gotta go to the schmucks...but if you want 100 thousand maybe you can do it on your own with your audience using something like Kickstarter? I certainly hope to do something like that in the future...

The d00d in the podcast thinks VC is the future of film production... sounds good to me! The further it moves away from Hollywood and the closer it moves to Silicon Valley THE BETTER!

There's MUCH SMARTER people in Silicon Valley than there is in Hollywood... Hollywood is all cronyism and nepotism and fellatio ^_^ They just throw money at theY problems there... the geniuses here in Silicon Valley actually use theY minds and solve problems... once the people in Silicon Valley realize THEY DON'T NEED TO SUCK HOLLYWOOD's OLD PASTY DICK or bow down to any OLD MEDIA...its game over...

Hollywood is a rotting corpse that doesn't know it's dead yet... they can bribe all they want and pull all theY cronyism strings with ACTA, PIPA, and SOPA etc... but they're just delaying the inevitable.

It's the CREATIVE PEOPLE that give Hollywood its power... once those creative people leave and find much better ways to create and distribute and make a living what will it have? A catalog of old crap people are tired of watching? Reality show feature films?

So if your a creative person waving your ass in the air waiting for old Hollywood to mount you and bust a nut full of gold coins up in yer shit ask yourselves this... is being fucked by dying old men what you really want to do?

I'm working on a few crappy short animated projects right now and by crappy I mean I'm not putting any effort into the "art" of it... Just focusing on the gags and the direction/editing for some short things to throw up on youtube (throw up as in vomit)...

So when it comes down to building the sets and props...I really don't want to haha... So what I've been doing is using the Google 3d Warehouse for that stuff... there's TONS of set pieces and props to find there... NOW you can only use these in NONCOMMERCIAL projects so I wouldn't try to use them for your big film project you want to sell... but its fine for stuff like this...

I used this Bathroom set model from 3d Warehouse but I had to build Toilet Duck myself ^ ^ I'm also experimenting with using the Cinema 4d hardware render...which results in no render time for these cheapo short things... just trying to minimize the time and effort that go from STUPID IDEA----> FINISHED ANIMATED SHORT FILM... Sort of like how 2d animators use stick figures...

A lot of the models are downloadable in Collada format which most 3d apps can import... Some are also only in Sketchup format... so just download Sketchup for free...open the model and export to Collada...

So if modeling is holding you back from realizing your ideas in 3d go check that warehouse! OR Charles Bronson will get you!

How/when did "filmmaking" get so fucking boring?!

Most all of the "filmmaking"rss feeds I read that come in from "independent filmmaking" blogs and the like are filled to the brim with mundanity...

Ohhh 4k this! And ipad app that! And this camera sensor this! And this camera rig that! AND OF COURSE THE RED! In 3d!

Is that what filmmaking is? Its just ALL ABOUT the tools? Yeh?

I see tons of this bullshit that is clearly a technical test or demo reel and some fancy fucker with a fedora is passing it off as a "film"... what the fuck is going on?

Is that what a "filmmaker" is today? Some nerd with an ipad grading his 4k stereoscopic whatever the fuck on a 64 core workstation?

Nobody cares EXCEPT OTHER WANNABE FILMMAKER TECH WHORES what you shot it on ...or whether an ipad or fancy whatever the fuck was involved... so why should you care?

Filmmakers should make films... and original and awesome ones at that... once you get too caught up in the tech that is used to make the films you stop being a filmmaker and you become a TECHNOLOGY CARETAKER...

So keep being a gear whore... and keep waiting for that "perfect" camera to shoot your "perfect" film... MEANWHILE some kid in Nevada is gonna make an original masterpiece with miniDV and edit it on a 2001 imac... and you'll go.. BUT WAIT?! NO ITS NOT 4k?! AND ITS A SMALL SENSOR AND THERES ALIASING?! BUT?!?!?!?!?

To those that are out there making theY cinematic dreams come true BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY I SALUTE YOU!

Ever felt like quitting?

We all do sometimes... When chasing your dreams.... trying to realize some crazy thing that might not make sense to the status quo isn't an easy thing to do...

And yeh sometimes we feel like quitting.... maybe we feel like quitting all the time? You know like when things go wrong?... because things always go wrong...

If you're trying to do something the status quo does not approve of... and it's always failing or lets say... not giving the outcome or results you want... the thought eventually creeps into your head... I'LL JUST QUIT AND DO SOMETHING MORE NORMAL...

You can ALWAYS quit and go the normal route... it will ALWAYS be there to accept you with open arms... you can always jump in to that... and what might that give you? Acceptance by the status quo?

We can always turn our back on our dreams and appease the status quo and its various human enforcers that are always swarming...

BUT if you quit THEY WIN... and that little voice inside of you that makes you feel like you matter LOSES.... FOREVER.

It's not easy to stand up for that little voice inside of you and FIGHT ALONE against the MASSIVE NEVER-ENDING ARMY of ruthless status quo enforcers... but if you don't fight for you... no one else will... I don't want to see you die...just like you probably don't want to see me to quit and die eh?

No one knows what you're capable of... NOT EVEN YOU! So show yourself and show us what you're made of! The world will be a much better and more interesting place if you do!

Learn anything in 5 minutes! How bout NO!

If yer a PONY that only wants to learn how to do TRICKS... yes 5 minutes is GREAT... BUT if you actually want to really LEARN how to do something and NOT just COPY someone else to get the EXACT SAME result they got... well then... NO.

Pony as in "one trick pony" of course but nowadays we have lots of 20 trick ponies running around...

I'm referring to 3d animation/filmmaking/visual fx... and the plethora of COPY THIS "tutorials" out there...

Of course this has to do with instant gratification vs. delayed gratification... humans are conditioned to want RESULTS NOW... they demand instant gratification in EVERYTHING (see premature ejaculation haha)... but the results always leaves the trickster feeling empty after the instant gratification wears off... (and you won't be the most sought after sexual partner either haha)

You learn a trick from someone else... you do it... instant gratification.... then you run around looking for more tricks... more buttons to press to make shiny things appear... why not spend the time to learn what happens when you press the button so you can develop your own tricks? OH YEH the instant gratification thing...

So lots of people make lots of money creating and selling buttons for the lil ponies to press... now if you don't want to be a TOY...

TOYAn inexperienced or incompetent writer. Someone whose writing is either wack, who uses sucker tips, or whose style is just plain cheesy. One old definition of "TOYS" is that it stands for "trouble on your system".

If you DON'T want to be a toy... then slow down...take a deep breath and use your mind... you are NOT a COPY machine... you are NOT a robot... you are a creative individual so ACT LIKE ONE... or else keep pressin them buttons making other people rich and creating nothing original yourself.

Remember if all you do is copy... you'll be like the millions of other people who copy the same stuff... expendable... forgettable... obsolete... dead....and if you think you can copy BUT make it HAWTER! SHINIER! FASTER! NEWER! or whatever ....you're playing the same lame ass game Hollywood plays with its remakes and re-imaginings... you're all destined to die in the new world.

Those crazy Finnish d00ds premiered their new film IRON SKY today at the Berlin Film Festival! I'm sure it was awesome!

I met the director Timo at SXSW in 2008 and we talked Nazi secret societies and the like....

And in 2012 Timo and his team BUST out this!!!!

I think its really great and a big step for independent film... as their previous film STAR WRECK was made in basements, kitchens, and bedrooms in Finland and was released online for free before a successful DVD release... then they partnered up with some peeps and got a 15 million dollar budget to make IRON SKY and now here it is...

They really got their stuff together and made it happen... I remember back in 2008 they already had suitE looking postcards and promo stuff for the film... we can learn a lot from the way they handled Iron Sky!

Sometimes I wish I had a real budget, a producer and a team of people to help me but I'm such a jerkoff I never made that stuff happen AND I don't want to work with Hollywood... Hmmm since I'm in Iceland all the time maybe I should change my name to M dottir Strange and try to work with the Icelandic film industry hmmmmm ^_^

So Disney is releasing an 8-bit themed 3d animated feature this year...

It's about a characters life inside of an old arcade game?! OMG

Yall are the people who know who threw down the 8-bit themed animated feature film before all the 8-bit and chiptune stuff got trendy...

If I was "smart" I would have kept the same 8-bit themed style until this day ...as its now become mainstream...now it's "marketable" 5 years after I did "WE ARE THE STRANGE" ....

But alas yer pal M dot is not driven by such desires as I have to do something new to stay interested and happy... I'm sure I'm even confusing a lot of you haha.... as my style used to be STR8NIME and now its STRANOHME...

But that is the world of M dot Strange... and I believe some of yall weirdo's appreciate me changing things up eh? ^_^ EVERY film will be different... that's how I'm gonna roll...

Occupy your mind

Many of you are probably following what's been going on with the Occupy movement... now lets say you're too far away from major cities wherein people are meeting up and the like... what can you do?

Occupy your mind! What do I mean by that? I mean clear out all the USELESS NOISE mass media tries to fill your mind with and occupy your mind with YOUR THOUGHTS! YOUR BELIEFS! YOUR IDEALS!

I haven't watched television in over 12 years... it was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life... television is injecting your conscious and subconscious mind with GARBAGE nonstop...

Radio... newspapers... magazines... most all major online news sites... TOTAL TRASH... now what what happens to you when you're constantly allowing your mind to be filled with TRASH?! It makes you sick...

If you have any sense YOU KNOW who OWNS mass media... and whose agenda is promoted through it... not your's and mine my friends thats for sure... and it does NOT have our best interest in mind... quite the contrary actually...

Lets throw out some well known cliches... "You are what you eat" Agree on that one? Eat bad food = sick body.... now how about the cliche "food for thought"... what are you feeding your mind? Celebrity gossip? War mongering ignorant bullshit? Reality shows? Eat bad food for thought = sick mind

You NEED a healthy mind that YOU are the master of if you're ever going to achieve anything outside of the norm of accepted human existence...

Try staying away from all forms of mass media for one month and I bet you'll like what happens to your mind... it will start to become yours again... you'll actually be able to hear YOUR inner voice...

We all know television, radio etc are on the way out... so what has replaced that noise? Facebook?

I had a Facebook account for about a year in 2008 then deleted it... and you know what... my life got better because of it! My mind was at ease... less noise to take in... and I haven't missed anything... does it really matter if I know some d00d got a new haircut or not? Or if I saw some fools vacation photos?

There's more noise to take in than ever before... a lot of us feel the need to "keep up" like we always have to know the newest news on whatever we're interested in... like we're going to miss something...

There's nothing to miss... its all just more noise to keep our minds preoccupied with things OTHER than the work we're supposed to be doing in the world...

So if you're not already.... try cutting off all the noise and occupy your mind... I'm sure you'll find some interesting things in there ^_^

BUT don't listen to me if you want to be rich and famous as I'm far from either... Sure my own thoughts make me feel like a pathetic loser sometimes as its not all fun and games up in our minds... its actually quite the opposite at first... all your repressed trauma, regrets, shame, pain, fear... all that stuff will come up... BUT if you read my B_BOOK you'll know how I learned to burn that pain for fuel and make art with it...

The Powerless cycle

Working on Heart String Marionette has been less of a technical/creative challenge and more of a psychological challenge for me... I used to think I was patient because I had done some stop motion animation... now that requires patience YES but you are still very active capturing frame after frame... you're constantly working... things are moving...

Now with the situation where HSM is now... wherein I finished all my major work on the film in February of last year and had to wait to receive chunks of music which I would then edit the film to and do the sound design/foley for it then wait for the next piece... so as far as HSM goes I spent %75 of 2011 waiting... instead of doing nothing I worked on other projects...

Now its 2012 and with HSM I'm still waiting... in 2011 I kept trying to press forward... pushing in hopes to finish it all soon... Being an uberector and all I'm used to being in control... but now HSM is out of my control... its in Endika's hands...

A strange thing happened once I said to myself "Well there's nothing I can do now as it's not up to me"... I didn't say this until I got back from my break about a week ago... once I said that to myself I felt powerless... it was new to me... to feel powerless on a creative project... I'm sure people feel it all the time on their projects... since I control everything on my projects I never felt it before... wow it SUCKS...

To feel powerless is not inspiring...when your not inspired and feel powerless you start to lose confidence… and when you dont have confidence you don't believe in yourself… when you don't believe in yourself you give up really easily… when you give up easily you never finish anything... and when you never finish anything you feel worthless and POWERLESS and the cycle continues... I can see that with this cycle its easy to fall into depression...

So how do you get yourself out of the cycle?

Well I said to myself... since HSM is out of my hands I'll continue work on a new big project! BUT as I learned jumping right into a big project when you feel powerless doesn't work so well as you'll just be like "Whatever I never even finished the other one?! So this one will never get done either?!" What a mental clusterfuck eh?!

So the way I'm going to find my way out of it is just to get back to the basics... don't even think about completing big projects right now... just draw some things...model some things... do some experiments in 3d with new techniques... write some story concepts/ideas... allow the flames of inspiration to spark up on their own... and when they do jump back into work and NEVER STOP AGAIN haha

Gotta stay sharp! I made a Badassery episode December 13th...took a month break... came back to find out that HSM was not done so I feel like a powerless failure haha... I'LL NEVER TAKE ANOTHER BREAK AGAIN! OR umm I'll make films WITH A BUDGET so we can pay people and GET SHIT DONE ASAP!

Ini is a young artist from Norway... she was the "2d production artist" for Heart String Marionette...check her stuff out here

Andrew is a young filmmaker from A_Merica who makes a bunch of wtF and often hellZA funny awkward videos like his Heart String Marionette video above ^_^ Andrew did a voice in Heart String Marionette and I did the music for his last short film. Check his youtube to see what the youth of today are doing GAWDDAMN KIDS (Old man voice with fist wave)

The homie who made this posted it in the comments of my last post and I thought it was tite so I's sharing it here... its his first feature and is currently in post production...nice work bruh!

I already knew this d00d Tyson was an awesome animator based on his past short films then I saw he is making this game?! d00d yer a GENIUS! Check out the Zombox blog for more

I don't know the d00ds who made the game but I'm always on AIM with the d00d who did the animation as he's a weirdo who also uses Cinema4d+Zbrush+After Effects... I'm looking forward to his upcoming feature film which should be pretty fucking crazy ^_^

M dot Strange update 1/22/12

My Xmas/New Years break was 2 weeks longer than expected because of cancelled flight complications but now I'm back and.... well... as I wrote before I left ...I expected the music for Heart String Marionette to be done by the time I came back and it isn't...

I spent a lot of 2011 waiting for the music but I didn't just sit around doing nothing... I did 8 episodes of Badassery, did a Rabbit Junk video, wrote 2 books, finished the script and storyboards for my next film... so as I'm waiting in 2012 I won't just sit around...

As far as HSM being incomplete goes... it's really just a matter of money... No one who has worked on HSM has been paid a single cent... not me for my 4+ years of work and not Endika for his 3+ years of work on the project... To do my part of HSM I do it all myself so the only limit is me..... for Endika to complete his part he has to work with several musicians... professional musicians who get paid for their time... if you're not paying them then you have to wait until they have the time/desire to work for you for free... if you had the $$$ to pay them they'd do it tomorrow... but when you don't you have to wait...

So there's been several times when it was "all supposed to be finished" but reality and the lack of $$$ got in the way...

It KILLS me to wait... so if you're anxious to see HSM I'm like 1000x more so... but there's nothing for me to do besides wait... I already finished the HSM "M dot Strange Soundtrack" for the DVD... I could easily pop that in and say that its done BUT Endika is both my friend and co-collaborator on HSM... and I should be giving him an "Assistant Director" credit on the film because of his contributions to the narrative as the project has gone on... I can honestly say that his contributions to the film have made the film better and I'm not even talking about the music as that's another thang...P.S. the music that is done is amazing

We already missed 3 film festivals that we were invited or selected to premiere at... I already seem like some unprofessional rookie with all my "it will be done by" statements... the only thing that has been lost is respect in M dot Strange as a producer with no money ^_^ So I wait....

So again I apologize... I've done everything I can do to complete HSM asap... but its been out of my hands for about 10 months now... unless I scrap the original vision... I believe in that film and I only have a few friends and I'll believe in them until the end unless they give me reason not too.... as long as you're doing your best and not wasting my time jerking me around I won't say FUCK YOU AND PEACE OUT

Now that I got that out of the way I should tell you about the projects I'm working on by myself in 2012...

M dot Strange's DARKSIDED- A series of short animated horror films centered around monsters and demons

BADASSERY- new episodes including "Scientologist Robots on the Moon" , "FAP FACTORY" and "MINECRAFT w/HAPPY ENDING"

I'm also to go further into my next animated feature film which for the first time I'm making the title known OMG?! The title of my next film is "GOD LIVES UNDERWATER" (nothing to do with 90's band of same name)- it has to do with "god" and takes place underwater ^_^ I already finished the script and storyboard and now I will start modeling everything... so I will start animating it this year and NOTHING I repeat NOTHING will hold me back on this one ^_^

I serve my audience above all... so this waiting/lagging has really eaten away at me the past year for letting yall down : ( I hope yall will stick with me as I have lots planned for the coming year ^_^

I also storyboarded a couple short little random animated shorts on my trip imma make asaP as well...

So again I apologize for the delays... I'm doing my best but I still have a lot to learn...

It will be out this year... hopefully sooner rather than later... its been a long journey... I've been in cycles of excitement/depression while waiting on HSM... when I open the edit and look at it I'm excited then when I realize I can't put it out yet and have to wait I get depressed...

I wrote "God Lives Underwater" while excited so while it is darker than HSM its not all E_VILE.... BUT I wrote the outline for the film after that while depressed and its FUCKED... I'll crank out that script soon too...

So imma just keep working and complete the things I can do myself....
