Hello, internet!

After several years of non-activity on this blog, I have returned. Or at least I have the intention to. I wish I had an interesting reason why I was incognito for a long time but no, I was NOT stranded on a deserted island, I did not learn how to shoot arrows, and I did not have shady dealings with shady characters. Simply put: life happened, much like the few times I've disappeared and reappeared in this space. I won't go into the specifics, but here are the most significant developments that have happened:

I'm getting married this year!

Anyway. I think part of the reason why I'm back for the nth time is in recent years, I have developed this urge to document everything that's happening to me. In fact, I actually tried to do an... I guess you could call it an e-diary but I noped off after 5 months of recording every little thing I saw/read/heard/etc. At first it was because I was getting jealous of all the year-end lists people were making; the documenting was because I tend to forget shit. Now it's more about... a self-preservation of sorts. I want to be able to remember everything from here on out. One day when I'm old(er), I want to be able to go online, access this blog, and read about the time I went to London, or went skydiving. I want to be able to relive those moments, in my head.

I just hope I don't forget my blog's URL.

Doctor Who watch

Someone recommended the Shredhead to me and I'm seriously considering it, since I don't really need a lot of effects when I play for RomCom.

Minifigs

Since I stopped collecting Marvel Universe 3.75" figures and these babies cost roughly P30 a piece, I think I can afford to grab a few more of these little fuckers.

I need a night light. Also because come on, how cool do these babies look?

Because my trusty 2-year old bag is about to give up on me.

WD My Passport Ultra

I already have 2 1TB external HDDs, but they're the ones that need to be plugged in order for them to work. Also, they're both almost full.

Macbook Air

Back when the Macbook Air first came out, I hated it. Now I'm actually considering getting one. Its fiercest competitor would be the 15" Macbook Pro but that might be too expensive for me. We'll see.

The Idiot Box presents: Fall TV 2013, Part 2

So I managed to sample a few more new shows the past couple of weeks. Don't even ask how I did it. I'm not quite sure myself.

Here are my thoughts on them.

Hostages is about a doctor whose family is taken... well, hostage as leverage in a conspiracy to kill the president of the United States.

Initial thoughts: I thought it would be a clear-cut premise but after a few episodes, they've added a few new layers that made the show much more exciting to watch.

Hello Ladies is about an English guy in LA trying to find love, sex, and everything in between.

Initial thoughts: Probably among my top 5 favorite new shows. Awkward and dry Brit humor is almost always a win for me. Also, it's nice to see Christine Woods on TV again after FlashForward (I still miss you, show) and Perfect Couples.

The Originals is a spin-off from The Vampire Diaries, and follows Klaus and his journey to reclaim New Orleans from his former protégé, who now rules the place.

Initial thoughts: I've always liked the Originals (especially Klaus) and I'm glad that they have their own show now. I like the added mysticism the locale and the witches/gypsies who live there bring. Two things I don't like: the main villain doesn't look like he's a match for Klaus, and Phoebe Tonkin is severely underutilized.

Welcome to the Family is about two high school students whose respective families are forced to "team up" when the girl finds out she's pregnant. Oh and on graduation day too, no less.

Initial thoughts: The main conflict (and source of laughs) comes from Mike O' Malley (Kurt's dad on Glee) and Ricardo Chavira's characters' dislike for each other, and they seem to play off each other well. Think Modern Family with more normal people. There is some potential here.

Sean Saves the World is about a newly-single dad trying to raise his daughter while dealing with the difficult new owner of the company he works at.

Initial thoughts: I liked it. Sean Hayes is still a delight to watch. The addition of Thomas Lennon (the new boss) doesn't hurt, either.

Super Fun Night is about... I don't know exactly, but from what I saw on the first episode it kinda looks like an Ugly Betty clone.

Initial thoughts: Nothing here worth my time. Pass.

The Millers is about a guy who finally gets to tell his overbearing parents about his recent divorce when they come over for a visit. Problem is, his dad takes a cue from him and in turn, leaves his mom.

Initial thoughts: Will Arnett and laugh tracks are a weird combination, but I kinda like it. Because of the cast, I'm staying for at least two more episodes and I guess I'll just take it from there.

The Tomorrow People is about a bunch of people who have powers a la Jumper and their struggle to find a place in the world.

Initial thoughts: Aside from teleportation, they can also do telekinesis and limited telepathy. You can clearly see X-Men elements here and there, and they even used the term "homo superior" in one instance. Being an X-Men fan, that alone makes it worth checking. Also, welcome back to TV, Peyton List!

Kill la Kill is about this school run by a ruthless student council. They rule with the help of special uniforms that give them special powers. The arrival of an exchange student with her own set of abilities could change all that.

Initial thoughts: I'm used to anime being exaggerated but this one is something else entirely. Fun though.

I was supposed to drop The Crazy Ones but surprise, the latest episode (E03) was actually pretty good. I finally got a glimpse of what I expected this show to be. Also, after a few episodes, The Blacklist is starting to bore me. I don't think I do well with serials.

The Idiot Box presents: Fall TV 2013

I haven't been watching as many shows as I used to, primarily because my day job makes it practically impossible to do so. Back when I was doing freelance I followed TWENTY (possibly more), for crying out loud. I've picked up a few new ones, sure, but the ones I dropped over the years far outnumber them. That is why I absolutely have no idea why I am going through the new fall shows like a fat kid tasting free samples in an ice cream store. Okay, that's not entirely true. I do know, and it's because I like to fill the void in my life with meaningless things. So there.

Unlike 2011 and 2012, I will be writing about new shows that I've already seen so yeah, you'll probably see a few more pseudo-reviews when the rest of them come out.

Let's get started!

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a comedy about a laid-back but highly efficient detective (Andy Samberg) who pretty much gets away with anything. That is, until the new captain of his precinct (Andre Braugher) shows up.

Initial thoughts: It's a lot of fun. Samberg never misses a beat, and he has a great supporting cast. The treatment reminds me of Parks and Rec or Modern Family. Also, that Melissa Fumero is hot, yo.

Sleepy Hollow is, quite simply, the retelling of the short story of the same name. What's different is the show is set in modern times. Fun!

Initial thoughts: I wasn't too impressed with the trailers but after 2 episodes, I am sold. The out-of-time Ichabod Crane is a delight to watch, and the added conspiracy theory layer is a nice touch. I am hoping to see more of John Cho, though.

The Blacklist is about a notorious fugitive (James Spader) who, after years of being a dick, surrenders to the FBI. Once there, he reveals that he has compiled information on other high profile criminals. He promises to help catch them, but insists that he'll only talk to Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone), a rookie FBI officer.

Initial thoughts: The pilot set up an interesting premise, and I'm stoked to see how it'll all play out. Megan Boone looks fa-ha-hine but is actually believable as an FBI agent too. Score!

The Crazy Ones is about an advertising agency executive and his daughter, who happens to be his partner in the company.

Initial thoughts: I've been looking for something to replace Trust Me so I was kind of hoping this one would turn out good but I was disappointed with the pilot. Williams was his usual self but I don't know, I don't like him here as much as I do in his other projects. Gellar seems kind of bland. Wolk was great though, and I hope they play off that in future episodes.

The Michael J. Fox Show is about a news anchor who goes back to work 5 years after overcoming(?) Parkinson's Disease.

Initial thoughts: The first two episodes weren't bad at all. They do throw around a lot of jokes about Parkinson's but they're very natural and not awkward at all. Also, Besty Brandt isn't as annoying here as she is on Breaking Bad. Heh.

Masters of Sex is about... I don't know, exactly. Something about sex and human sexuality and research and stuff. The entire reason why I picked this up was because I saw “Lizzy Caplan” and “sex” on the previews. Sorry?

Initial thoughts: I haven't gotten around to watching this yet, honestly. Maybe tonight.

Trophy Wife is about Kate (Malin Akerman), a former party girl who becomes the third wife of this middle-aged dude (Bradley Whitford) who lives in a house with his three children from two other marriages.

Initial thoughts: I like seeing Malin Akerman in light comedies, and this show showcases her talent in great fashion. The pilot itself was far from perfect, but good enough to convince me to watch at least three more episodes.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ( god I hate typing this show's name) is about WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT KIND OF PERSON ARE YOU JESUS H. CHRIST ON A BICYCLE

Initial thoughts: I waited for this for a long time and man, IT WAS WORTH IT. The show is peppered with MCU and comic book references, which is awesome. The dialougue could use a bit more work, but you could definitely see traces of Whedon there. Not too hot about some of the cast members (who, coincidentally, are all male) but Ming-Na and Clark Gregg make up for it. Speaking of cast members, how about Chloe Bennet, huh? Yowza. Lots of potential here.

I also tried out Mom (Anna Faris and Allison Janney) a few days ago but I didn't like it. Also. aside from the aforementioned Masters of Sex, I have Hostages (Dylan McDermott) queued.

The 2013 San Diego Comic Con

Back in 2011, I was all "I want to go to the San Diego Comic Con!" Last year, I basically said the same thing. This year, while I still echo the same sentiment from the previous years, I have decided to take the necessary steps to make it a reality. I mean I already got my passport, I have steady monthly income, why not see it through, right? Yeah I know it'll involve a hell of lot more than those two things, shut up. I just think making the decision to go is where it'll all start. At least now, whenever I think of going on another toy-buying binge, I'll have a "save money for comic con" option.

Right now, I'm looking at 2015 as a possible target date. I would love to go next year but I don't think a year is enough to save money for the trip, and 2016 just seems so far away. Also, I won't be alone. Hopefully. I sure would love to take Tin with me if she wants.

Also also, these nerds.

Gino, Marco, Bim and Ade: I'm counting on you guys. Let's make #SDCC2015 happen.

Anyway, now that that is out of the way, here are the things at this year's comic con that blew my mind.

A new trailer for The Legend of Korra: Book 2. This season looks like it'll be more epic than the first one.

To tell the truth, I'm still a little underwhelmed by all I've seen from X-Men: Days of Future Past. The only thing that impressed me was this rad sentinel head. It looks like it actually hates mutants.

Tatiana Maslany, Jordan Gavaris and Dylan Bruce of Orphan Black in their first ever panel! What a fun trio.

How I Met Your Mother's season 9 promo. If you're one of those people who have grown increasingly annoyed at how long they're dragging out the whole mother reveal thing, then you have to watch this.

I'm not the Man of Steel's biggest fan, but when they announced the sequel that'll feature Superman AND Batman, I got goosebumps.

They also showed some Guardians of the Galaxy concept art, plus some footage. Sweet.

Speaking of sweet, SWEET JESUS KAREN GILLAN SHAVED HER HEAD

There were other things like teasers for the new Godzilla film, a live-action World of Warcraft movie, and Captain America: Winter Soldier. I also read somewhere that they showed the full pilot episode of the upcoming Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show and the crowd loved it. Lucky bastards. As I'm writing this, I still couldn't find any of the clips I mentioned above (and I doubt I ever will) but if I do, I'll update this entry. Probably.

Sketches and Stuff: Art Trade -- Rule 63 Colossus

On the rare times that there's free time at work, I try to draw as much as I can. Unfortunately, I don't really do well with random doodles and I think I do better when there's a specific direction or purpose to my sketches. That is why when a co-worker put out an open call for art trades on Facebook, I immediately jumped on the chance. Eventually the other co-workers saw me working on my trade piece and after explaining how it works, they decided that they wanted in on the action too. Since I'm pretty envious of Rob Cham's portrade shenanigans, I thought it would be awesome to turn this exercise into an art trade mini-series for my blog's Sketches and Stuff series.

Also, I didn't have a theme at first but I found myself requesting a lot of X-Men characters from my co-workers so yeah. First up, the one who got this so-called ball rolling: Alek!

Alek is an art director at Havas Media Ortega, and I think he's the one who sketches the most out of all the people at work. I asked him to do a female version of Colossus, and here's what he came up with:

The Lazy Reviewer on: PicksurePicksure's 3-in-1 Clip-On Lens

I'm a big fan of versatile and do-it-all stuff, mainly because I don't want a to buy things that do only one thing. It's the same reason why I would go for a pair of black leather Chucks instead of the usual leather loafers. Yeah, I know, it's not the same thing and it doesn't work all the time but generally, that's how I see things. The same goes for, say, taking photos. Yes I have a DSLR but most of the time it's such a chore to lug around whenever I feel like taking pictures, especially since I'm not a professional. Enter the point of this preamble: my iPhone. Instead of bringing the huge camera and a couple of lenses, I've settled for crappy pictures using my phone's camera for events and out-of-town trips. Most of the time I'm pretty content with it but apps can only do so much. That is why when I found out about the Olloclip, I immediately took an interest. However, said interest took a nosedive when I found out that the darned thing goes for 70 dollars (About P3000) a set. Luckily, there is an alternative.

I found out about PicksurePicksure's 3-in-1 clip-on lens ~~while stalking Jessy Mendiola's Instagram account~~ online and discovered that they were selling it for only P999, so I decided to try it out. I placed an order last week and after a couple of days, they delivered it to me. The kit contains one clip (roughly 2.5"x1"), three kinds of lenses (fisheye, wide and macro), and a small pouch to house all of them in. Attaching the accessory is fairly simple; you just screw in the lens you want to use, and clip it in place. Unlike the Olloclip which has a very specific mold/size, the clip-on can be used for all gadgets you own, provided that they're not too thick. Also, you can use it without removing your protective case.

Tried it on my iPad. Not that I'd ever use it to take pictures.

Once the clip is attached, it's ready to use! Now for some sample shots.

Fisheye Lens

This one creates a strong visual distortion on your photos, allowing you to view your image on a 180 degree perspective. Probably my favorite among the three.

Perfect though for framing subjects that won't usually fit in the iPhone's screen. So far I haven't been using it as much as the other two but there might be some cool tricks I can do with the lens. Don't stop learning!

Macro Lens

Unscrewing the top half of the Wide Angle Lens reveals the Macro Lens. It allows you to zoom in on your subjects to capture even the smallest details.

Not too bad, eh? The results are pretty great, considering how cheap the kit is. That's not to say that I don't have a few issues with it though.

Since it's a clip-on, the thing sticks out of your device like that pesky antenna on an old Nokia mobile phone. It's a bit annoying, but I can get used to it. I just have to be a little careful.
The clip covers the phone's flash. Sure the iPhone's flash sucks sour frog ass but still.
Sometimes the resulting photo is a teeny tiny bit blurry. It's not that apparent but if you're a stickler for detail, you'll notice it. Since the clip doesn't fit as seamlessly as the Olloclip, you have to be a little more precise when attaching it. Also, tap on your gadget's screen first to allow your camera to focus before shooting. If all else fails, use apps like Snapseed or PicsArt to sharpen your photo a tad.

There you have it! It's not perfect, but I guess it all boils down to understanding the tools you have and maximizing them. Personally, I'm pretty happy with my purchase and I'm looking forward to spamming your Instagram feed with my crappy photos.

Sketches and Stuff: Iron Man Mark XLII

Iron Man 3 is the biggest superhero movie of 2013 so far, and I thought I'd do my own version of the main armor used in the film, the Mark XLII. I had a little bit of trouble drawing this one, mainly because I'm not used to doing armor and the like. Also the reason why I had to take some creative liberties in my rendition. This isn't a perfect copy, but it's the closest I could get.

This piece is the same one I did a few weeks back, but I tweaked some details a bit and added some textures. I wanted to draw the full armor but I'm ~~too lazy~~ thinking of making this into a shirt for Paper Toss Designs and I think it'll look better if I left some parts of Iron Man out. Makes sense, huh?

A few weeks ago, Bim of Geekout.ph asked us, the site's contributors, to suggest a theme for its Halloween post. After much deliberation, he decided on this:

I thought of putting Logan here, but then I chose the next best thing: Laura Kinney a.k.a. X-23 a.k.a. Wolverine's clone. She's every bit as useful as Logan, only she's better because she has boobs.

Video Games: Samus Aran from The Metroid series

My tank, my nuker. Armored to avoid the usual zombie bites, plus a nice arsenal of weapons to mow down the fuckers. Also, boobs.

Movies: Babydoll from Sucker Punch

As disappointing as the movie was, you cannot deny the fact that Babydoll. Kicked. Major. Ass. I mean did you see how she handled that katana? I bet she can handle anything long and har--- ANYWAY. Yeah. I pick her.

Any Fiction: Sarah Connor from The Terminator series

The leader of my squad. Military training, balls of steel the size of landmines, and a penchant for beating the odds. I'd follow her anywhere.

It's been a while since I did something for Sketches and Stuff, so I thought I'd do a piece on Charles Xavier's half-brother, Cain Marko a.k.a. the Juggernaut. He's massive, and he's got a cool costume. What's not to love?

Juggernaut has superhuman strength, and is widely regarded as unstoppable once he starts moving. He is not a mutant and instead gets his powers from the mystical Crimson Gem of Cyttorak. His helmet gives him immunity to psychic attacks. Currently, Colossus has the power of the Juggernaut, and I don't know what Cain has been up to since then.

Part 2 of 2

In the first part of this series, I wrote about upcoming shows. Now let's check out the returning ones this season. Some of the series I'm watching have already started like Doctor Who (3 episodes), Boss (5 episodes), and Grimm (season 2 episode 1 in a few hours) so this post is actually a little late. I've also been offline the past couple of weeks so I'm not sure if the details here are up-to-date so feel free to reply with corrections in the comments.

I started losing interest in this show halfway through the 1st season, but Beth Behr is just too darn cute to ignore.

How I Met Your Mother (season 8 starts September 24)

Why am I still watching this?
Unlike a lot of people, I am not too pissed anymore about the non-reveal the past 7 seasons. As long as they put out great episodes, I'll keep watching it. (But yeah please, throw us a bone this time.) Also, they're teasing TWO weddings this season. DUNDUNDUNNN
