Charlotte, N.C. producer Simon SMTHNG dropped this little gem way back in October 2011. Evocatively titled The Death Of Us, it’s a dark, moody, soft-focus blur of an album, loaded with ghostly, manipulated vocal samples, dusty drum programming and reverb-drenched samples.

A sad, dignified project, this EP occupies the same foggy emotional territory as Burial’s seminal Untrue, but whereas Untrue was a stylized portrait of cold, dirty London around the turn of the millennium, The Death Of Us operates on a slightly smaller scale, endlessly introverted and more personal. If the fuzzy, crackling drums and faraway acoustic guitars on “No Audible Dialogue” or the dusty piano on “The Beginning” don’t elicit some emotion, there’s a chance you might be clinically dead. The Death Of Us is strongly recommended for rainy, chilly days or pre-dawn walks around sleeping cities. Download/stream after the jump.

Tensei – Two (Free EP)

Chicago based musicians Simple X and Midas Wells, collectively known as Tensei, give us their second instrumental effort with Two, the duo’s latest Plug Research release.

Inspired by ‘70s soul, afro-funk, and themed soundtracks that recall espionage, Two builds from the experimental hip-hop inspired beats of One. However, Two takes the groove deeper with its jazzy inflections, ethnic rhythms, cosmic electronics, and live instrumentation making it a bit more soulful and funkier. The one vocal track, “Think Twice,” which features multi-instrumentalist Khari Lemuel of TheOnes and Jae Franklin is an ode to the infectious soul classics of yesteryear with a modernized twist while “Passport,” which was featured on the Plug Research Compilation, is a an exquisite soundbed filled with lush pleasantries. And while this is Tensei’s second formal release, it still marks the beginning for the artists so journey with them as they continue on a path that pushes the limits and boundaries of hip hop inspired beat making and production to higher elevation.
