EcoSMART Technologies, the nation’s leading producer of organic pesticides, will be center stage on Tuesday morning in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at a gathering of some of the nation’s leading scientists, including representatives from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Maine Medical Center Research Institute and leading Universities, as they discuss safe, new alternatives for Tick Control and the Prevention of Lyme Disease in the United States.

EcoSMART’s new Mosquito & Tick Control ready-to-use yard spray has been identified by the Maine Medical Research Institute as one of the most effective, naturally derived tick control products on the market today. It will be cited in a study to be published this year in the Journal of Medical Entomology. EcoSMART scientists have been working closely with the Maine Institute, as well as with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to conduct research that identifies highly effective natural pesticide alternatives that can be used safely by homeowners to reduce the risk of insect born diseases.

EcoSMART, which manufacturers the nation’s only complete line of EPA Exempt, safe pesticides, offers more than 15 products for home and garden use. It has been the #1 selling “green” pesticide used by professionals for years…and is now available to consumers in leading retail stores throughout the United States. Made from patented blends of essential plant oils, EcoSMART products are proven effective against bugs, but completely safe for people, pets and the environment.

New Study Announces Safe Alternatives for Tick Control and Prevention of Lyme Disease in the United States

WHAT: Natural product scientists from North America will converge in Boston next Tuesday, June 15 to announce safe and effective alternatives for tick control and the prevention of disease transmission to humans. New research conducted by the Vector-Borne Disease Laboratory at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute found that a natural, plant essential oil-based pesticide was able to provide effective control of deer ticks in the field. These findings are to be published this year in the Journal of Medical Entomology and highlight a significant step toward the implementation of new botanical pest management practices. Press conference participants include leading scientists from, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Maine Medical Center Research Institute, EcoSMART Technologies, and four North American Universities.

WHY: Lyme disease is the most frequently reported disease transmitted by arthropods in the United States, with over 29,000 cases confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2008. According to the American Lyme Disease Foundation most people acquire Lyme disease from infected nymphal ticks, which begin to seek out hosts in the spring and early summer. This coincides with the time many people start to become active outdoors through hiking, camping, or just spending time in the backyard.

A new study conducted by the Vector-Borne Disease Laboratory at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute demonstrated that a botanical pesticide containing rosemary and peppermint essential oil actives was able to provide effective control of the deer tick. These findings highlight a significant step toward the implementation of new pest management practices using alternative pesticide and repellent formulations for tick control.
