I'm usually shy talking about myself but I feel like sharing this particular experience in my life might help someone else that is going through the same thing.I've always believed that you will truly know yourself if you move to a place where no one knows you. A place that's unfamiliar, a place where you can start from scratch, start anew.
About 9 years ago, I did just that. I moved from Manila, a city where I've been living comfortably for many years of my existence to a place that is somewhat similar but a lot bigger. A place that seems brighter but wildly new and unfamiliar.
I was right. Almost everything was new and unfamiliar. At times, this bigger place was even mean and confusing. I had no idea what I was about to get myself into (which was good). I was told I was a bit naive, silly, sensitive, stupid, exotic, nice, weird, unusually warm, nerdy and even called an Alien. Yes, as in the term used to describe a form of species from outer space. I felt like a total outsider. I tried to fit in but every time I did I just ended up being labeled. I felt like I didn't belong, I felt lonely.
I started to spend a lot of time by myself. I started to do things that I love. Things that made me happy. Little by little I realized how enjoyable it can be to rediscover oneself. I even discovered new things that I'm good at. I became more open to myself and to others. I found work and I started to become more independent and was able to cater to my needs and the needs of my family. Then I started to have friends. I listened more to what they have to say. I became more interested in my surroundings, the culture, the history, about how things work, and about why things are.
Through difficult times I learned to hold on, to be strong. When unexpected things happened I learned to adapt. Through differences, I learned to understand. Through disappointments, I rediscovered human nature. Through moments of identity crisis I learned to be comfortable in my own skin and just be myself. I discovered how strong I can be and how despite all the hard times, I am HERE and my light shines. All these experiences, humbled me.
Two days ago, I was officially named a US CITIZEN. I'm no longer an Alien. I, along with 5,300 other new citizens was greeted by a welcome speech from President Obama. He said a few things that will stick with me. He said, that I have a huge responsibility to share my talents and to enrich America's culture with my own. Although I am an American citizen now, my own Filipino culture will always be with me and will contribute to what makes America unique. I have a responsibility to dream. To not be afraid because in America, no dream is impossible. I am inspired to be more and to do more. I'm finally FREE and for the first time in 9 years, I now feel that I AM HOME.
No wonder they call this country the home of the brave.

How To Style Your Bow Tie - Basic Outer Wear

Hello my lovelies!!!

So psyched about this new project I have for you guys.

I've completed my first tutorial video ever!

In this video I'm going to show you over 10 different ways to style your bow tie with basic outer wear pieces.

For the non-YouTubers and blog lovers out there,

I've also broken down the tutorial here,
for your reading pleasure.

1. Classic Bow Tie Look. Take any basic button down blouse, button it all the way to the top and wear it with your favorite bow tie. This will also be our basic canvas for this tutorial

2. The Sweater Look.

All I did here is put a sweater over our basic canvas

and now I have a totally different look.

3. Don't be afraid to mix it up and even accessorize!

I like to be a little nerdy sometimes, so when I rock this lookI always wear my oversized clear glasses.

4. The Cardigan Look.Also a good option for the nerdy look is to wear a cardiganover our basic canvas.

5. The Leather Jacket Look.For an edgier look, wear a leather jacket. The leather jacketgives an instant edge and a fun vibe to this outfit.

6. The Classic Trench Coat Look. If you like the classic and clean look, wear a trench coat.I like to button up my trench and tie the waist belt to give my body a little more shape.

This outfit is perfect for fall or winter season.

7. Faux Fur Coat Look.Also perfect for winter is rocking your bow tie with a fab faux fur coat.

8. Leopard Print Look. For the animal print lovers out there, bow ties looks so cute with leopard print coats and

9. Snake Print Look. Even snake print blazers!

10. The Tuxedo Jacket Look.And of course you can never go wrong with wearing a classic Tuxedo jacket with your bow tie.

These are just a few different ways to style your bow tie with basic outer wear pieces. There's still so many ways to style your bow tie by wearing different colored blouses.

Or wear it with different patterns like stripes

Polka dots

Plaid

Or for a more feminine and sexy look, spice up your make up by wearing red lipstick.

And letting your hair down =)

Style Icon: GRACE CODDINGTON

Grace Coddington is not like any other Style Icons out there.
You know, like those women that look like they're a walking magazine ad because of their impeccable personal style. Or like celebrities that look annoyingly perfect all the time because they have an army of hair stylists, fashion stylists and make up artists behind them. Ooooor like those super models that look amazing in any outfit because well... they're models?

Grace Coddington is not like any of the above mentioned definition of a style icon at all. Although she started out as model at the age of 17, all that changed at the age of 26 when she encountered a car accident that left her disfigured ( she lost her eyelid ). Two years after the accident she was offered a job as a Junior editor in British Vogue. Then, in 1988 she joined Anna Wintour at American Vogue where she remains the magazine's creative director.

How did I know of Grace? I was first introduced to her by my friend Netflix through a documentary called "The September Issue". This documentary is mainly about how Anna Wintour, the editor in chief of American Vogue leads her team in publishing the most important issue of every season, the September Issue.

Granting the fact that Anna Wintour and her controlled fury seems to be the main focus of the documentary, I was immediately drawn to Grace's genius work and demeanor. This is why she, is not only a style icon but one of my role models as well.

I was actually quite shocked by a few observations I saw within the documentary. Observations such as:
1) She was wearing FLATS.
2) She looked like she doesn't wear any make up or even care about fixing her hair.
3) When it comes to her own personal style, let's just say it's almost as if she doesn't have any.
4) I also observed how this amazing stylist, in a supposedly cut throat industry is sincerely just - nice.
5) and all these while working in the compounds of -Vogue's high fashion no flats allowed, cut throat, dog eat dog world office-

I mean, how could that be? Does Anna actually allow that? Or was I just brainwashed by that movie The Devil Wears Prada? As you can see, I instantly felt a connection with her because that's exactly how I am when I work as well. I think a lot of people have a misconception that our job is so glamorous. Well, I don't blame them because it does seem like it, but truth is it is NOT.

Anyway, going back to the subject, I'm a huge fan of Grace's work. She is by far the best at what she does and is responsible for 90% of the magazine's breathtakingly intricate and -out of this world- editorials. And even with all the recognition (not to mention her prestigious position) she remains to be humble, vulnerable, nice and just human.

To me, Grace Coddington is a living fashion legend.

I AM GALLA

I am so excited to announce that Adam of I AM GALLA, an amazing blogger and also a good friend of mine is rocking one of my leather bow ties!
I know there's a stigma about how bow ties should only be worn on special or formal occasions such as proms, weddings, and so on. But at this day and age, NOPE! That is not the case anymore.
Fashion is about change, innovation and taking traditional pieces and turning them into modern and more wearable ones. Adam did this perfectly with this look. I love how he spiced up his outfit with a bow tie but still made it look cool, casual and effortless.
Wearing a bow tie to school, the mall, or to work may make people say "WHAT? ARE YOU SERIOUS?!" back in the day, but nowadays? It's more like the, "OH MAH GAHHH!! YOU'RE SO CUTE!" with a smiling face =)kind of a comment.

is my favorite so far out of all the Fall 2011 RTW collections I've seen. I love his use of color and how he mixed structured jackets with flowy skirts. I also absolutely adore how he successfully blended leather, satin and velvet materials and turned them into moving pieces of art.

It's modern, fashion forward yet very wearable.

Perfect combo in fashion if you ask me.
