'അറഫ' തിരിച്ചറിവിന്റെ ദിനം

പുണ്യപ്രവാചകന് ഇബ്രാഹീം നബി(അ)മിലൂടെ അല്ലാഹു നടത്തിയ വിളിക്കുത്തരം ചെയ്ത്, ലബ്ബൈക്കയുടെ മന്ത്രോച്ചാരണങ്ങളാല് മെയ്യും മനസ്സും നിറച്ച് ഹജ്ജാജുമാര് നാളെ അറഫയില് സംഗമിക്കും. ശരീരം കൊണ്ട് അറഫയിലെത്താന് കഴിഞ്ഞില്ലെങ്കിലും, ലോകത്തിന്റെ വിവിധ കോണുകളിലിരുന്നു കൊണ്ടു തന്നെ, മനസ്സു കൊണ്ടും ആത്മാവു കൊണ്ടും സത്യവിശ്വാസികളിന്ന് അറഫയില് സംഗമിക്കും.
അറഫ എന്ന പദത്തിന്റെ വാക്കര്‍ഥം തന്നെ തിരിച്ചറിവ് എന്നാണ്. വിലക്കപ്പെട്ട കനി കഴിച്ചതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് സ്വര്‍ഗ ഭ്രഷ്ടരായ ആദം നബി(അ)യും പ്രിയ പത്‌നി ഹവ്വാ ഉമ്മ(റ)യുമായി കണ്ടുമുട്ടിയത് ഇതേ സ്ഥലത്തു വച്ചായതിനാലാണ് അറഫയെന്ന് ആ പ്രദേശത്തിനു പേരു വന്നതെന്നും പണ്ഡിതന്മാര്‍ അഭിപ്രായപ്പെടുന്നു.
എന്നാല്‍ വ്യക്തികള്‍ പരസ്പരം തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നതിനപ്പുറം അറഫയെന്നത് മനുഷ്യന് അവന്റെ സ്രഷ്ടാവിനെ തിരിച്ചറിയേണ്ടതിനെയാണ് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. മനുഷ്യ സൃഷ്ടിപ്പിന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യത്തെ വിശദീകരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഖുദ്‌സിയ്യായ ഹദീസില്‍ അല്ലാഹു ഇപ്രകാരം പറയുന്നു: 'ഞാന്‍ മറഞ്ഞ നിധിയായിരുന്നു. അപ്പോള്‍ ഞാന്‍ അറിയപ്പെടണമെന്നാഗ്രഹിക്കുകയും അതു പ്രകാരം പടപ്പുകളെ പടക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു'. മനുഷ്യ സൃഷ്ടിപ്പിന്റെ പിന്നിലുള്ള അല്ലാഹുവിന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യം മനുഷ്യന് അല്ലാഹുവിനെ അറിയുക എന്നതാണ്. അല്ലാഹുവിനെ അറിയുക എന്നത് ഓരോ മുസ്്‌ലിമിനും ബാധ്യതയാണ്. അറിവുകളില്‍ ഏറ്റവും ഉത്തമം അല്ലാഹുവിനെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അറിവാണെന്നതില്‍ രണ്ടു പക്ഷമില്ല. ഈ തിരിച്ചറിവിന്റെ ബോധം വിശ്വാസികളില്‍ വീണ്ടും അരക്കിട്ടുറപ്പിക്കുകയാണ് ഓരോ അറഫാ ദിനവും.
അറഫാ ദിനമെന്നത് വളരെ പുണ്യകരമായ ഒരു ദിനമാണ്.നബി(സ)പറയുന്നു: 'അല്ലാഹുവിങ്കല്‍ അറഫാ ദിവസത്തെക്കാള്‍ ശ്രേഷ്ഠമായ ഒരു ദിവസമില്ല. അന്ന് അല്ലാഹു ഭൂമിയോട് ഏറ്റവും അടുത്ത് വരും. തുടര്‍ന്ന് ആകാശവാസികളോട് ഭൂവാസികളെക്കുറിച്ച് അഭിമാനത്തോടെ പറയും: എന്റെ അടിമകളെ നോക്കൂ! ജടപിടിച്ചവരും പൊടി പറ്റിയവരുമായി വിദൂര ദിക്കുകളില്‍ നിന്നും അവര്‍ എന്റെ അടുത്ത് വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. എന്റെ കാരുണ്യം മാത്രം കാംക്ഷിച്ച് കൊണ്ട്. എന്റെ ശിക്ഷയെ അവര്‍ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല.'
ഹജ്ജ് കര്‍മ്മം നിര്‍വഹിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഹാജിമാര്‍ അല്ലാത്തവര്‍ക്ക് അറഫാ ദിവസത്തില്‍ നോമ്പ് നോല്‍ക്കല്‍ ഏറെ പുണ്യമുള്ള കാര്യമാണ്. കഴിഞ്ഞ് പോയതും വരാനിരിക്കുന്നതുമായ ഓരോ വര്‍ഷങ്ങളിലെ പാപങ്ങളെ പൊറുപ്പിക്കാന്‍ അത് പര്യാപ്തമാണ് (മുസ്്‌ലിം). പ്രവാചകപത്‌നിമാരില്‍ നിന്നും റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് ചെയ്യുന്നു: നബി(സ) ദുല്‍ഹജ്ജ് ഒമ്പത്, മുഹറം പത്ത്, എല്ലാമാസത്തിലെയും പൗര്‍ണ്ണമി ദിനങ്ങളായ പതിമൂന്ന്, പതിനാല്, പതിനഞ്ച് എന്നീ ദിവസങ്ങളില്‍ നോമ്പനുഷ്ഠിക്കാറുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഭക്ത്യാദരങ്ങളോടെ വീടുകളും പള്ളികളും സജ്ജമാക്കി കാത്തിരിക്കുന്ന വിശ്വാസി സമൂഹം, ലോകത്തിനായി വിശുദ്ധ ഖുര്‍ആന്‍ നല്‍കി അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചതിന് വ്രതനാളുകളിലൂടെ ദൈവത്തിന് നന്ദി പറയുന്നു. അവര്‍ പകലുകളില്‍ അന്നപാനീയങ്ങള്‍ വെടിഞ്ഞും വാക്കും നോക്കും കര്‍മങ്ങളും നിയന്ത്രിച്ചും രാത്രികളില്‍ ദീര്‍ഘ നമസ്കാരങ്ങളില്‍ മുഴുകിയും ഖുര്‍ആന്‍ പാരായണം ചെയ്തും ദാനധര്‍മങ്ങള്‍ നിര്‍വഹിച്ചും റമദാനെ ഹൃദയത്തില്‍ സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നു.....റമദാന്‍ കരീം.... —

ഒരു നൂറ്റാണ്ടുമുമ്പ്, കൃത്യമായി പറഞ്ഞാല്‍, 1915 ഏപ്രില്‍ 24ന് തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചതായി ആരോപിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന അര്‍മീനിയന്‍ വംശഹത്യയുടെ നൂറാം വാര്‍ഷികം പ്രമാണിച്ച് ബ്രിട്ടനും ഫ്രാന്‍സും റഷ്യയും ജര്‍മനിയും ഉള്‍പെടെയുള്ള രാജ്യങ്ങളും പോപിന്റെ നേതൃത്തത്തില്‍ അനുസ്മരണ സമ്മേളനം നടത്തി വിദ്വേഷത്തിന്‍െറ പഴയ മുറിപ്പാടുകള്‍ വീണ്ടും തുറന്നിടുന്ന ആചരണങ്ങള്‍ കൊണ്ട്, രണ്ടു നാഗരികതകള്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ അകല്‍ച്ചയുടെ ഗര്‍ത്തങ്ങള്‍ സൃഷ്ടിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത്.ഒന്നാം ലോകയുദ്ധകാലത്ത് ഉസ്മാനിയ്യ (ഓട്ടോമന്‍) ഭരണകൂടം നടത്തിയതായി പറയപ്പെടുന്ന കൂട്ടനരഹത്യ ലോകമെങ്ങും അനുസ്മരിക്കപ്പെടുമ്പോള്‍ അതിലടങ്ങിയ രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തോടും മതപക്ഷപാതിത്വത്തോടും തങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കടുത്ത വിയോജിപ്പുണ്ടെന്ന ഉറച്ച നിലപാടിലാണ് തുര്‍ക്കിയിലെ റജബ് ത്വയ്യിബ് ഉര്‍ദുഗാന്‍ ഭരണകൂടം.
യുദ്ധവേളയില്‍ അര്‍മീനിയക്കാരെ പോലെ പതിനായിരക്കണക്കിനു തുര്‍ക്കികളും കുര്‍ദുകളും അറബികളും മരണം വരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നും ഒരു വിഭാഗം നേരിട്ട ദുരന്തത്തെ മാത്രം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിനുശേഷം ഉയര്‍ത്തിക്കാട്ടി മതവികാരം ആളിക്കത്തിക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമം അംഗീകരിച്ചുതരാനാവില്ളെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം ഓര്‍മിപ്പിച്ചു.
ആധുനികതയുടെ അരുണോദയ വര്‍ഷമായി കൊട്ടിഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടാറുള്ള 1492ല്‍ സംഭവിച്ചത് ഫെര്‍ഡിനന്‍ഡ് രാജാവിന്‍െറയും ഇസബെല്ല രാജ്ഞിയുടെയും നേതൃത്വത്തില്‍ ക്രിസ്റ്റ്യന്‍ സ്പെയിനിന്‍െറ പിറവിക്കായി യഹൂദ, മുസ്ലിം പൗരന്മാരുടെ വംശവിച്ഛേദനമായിരുന്നു. ‘മതനിന്ദാ വിചാരണ’യുടെ (Inquisition) പേരില്‍ ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിനു മനുഷ്യരെ കൊന്നൊടുക്കി. അല്ളെങ്കില്‍ പിറന്നമണ്ണില്‍നിന്ന് ആട്ടിപ്പുറത്താക്കി. കോളനിവാഴ്ചയുടെ ചരിത്രം കൂട്ടക്കൊലകളുടെയും വംശവിച്ഛേദനത്തിന്‍േറതുമാണ്. അമേരിക്കയിലും ആസ്ട്രേലിയയിലും അവര്‍ ആധിപത്യം സ്ഥാപിച്ചത് അന്നാട്ടുകാരെ കൂട്ടമായി കൊന്നൊടുക്കിയാണ്.
ആഫ്രോ-ഏഷ്യന്‍ വന്‍കരയിലെ ആദിമനിവാസികളെ കാടന്മാരും രാക്ഷസന്മാരുമായി മുദ്രകുത്തി (നമ്മുടെ ഇന്ത്യ മഹാരാജ്യതുപോലും കൊലിനി വാഴ്ചയുടെ പേരില്‍ എത്രയോ പേര്‍ക് ജീവന്‍ നഷ്ടപെട്ടു നരകയാധന അനുഭവിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു) ബ്രിട്ടനും ഫ്രാന്‍സും ഹോളണ്ടും പോര്‍ച്ചുഗലും സ്പെയിനുമൊക്കെ നടത്തിയ ‘എത്നിക് ക്ളെന്‍സിങ്ങി’നെ പോപ് എങ്ങനെയായിരിക്കും ന്യായീകരിക്കാന്‍ പോകുന്നത്? കേട്ടാല്‍ ചോരമരവിച്ചുപോവുന്ന ആ ക്രൂരതകളുടെ പേരില്‍ ആരായിരിക്കും മാപ്പ് ചോദിക്കാന്‍ പോകുന്നത്? വിസ്മൃതിയില്‍ ആണ്ടുകിടക്കുന്ന അത്തരം മാനുഷിക ദുരന്തങ്ങളെ കുഴിമാടത്തില്‍നിന്ന് മാന്തിയെടുത്ത് പുതിയ തലമുറക്കുമുന്നില്‍ നിരത്തുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് എന്തു നേടാന്‍; വിദ്വേഷത്തിന്‍െറ പ്രത്യയശാസ്ത്രത്തില്‍ അഭിരമിക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് അല്ലാതെ. അത് മനസ്സിലാക്കിയാണ് തുര്‍ക്കി പ്രസിഡന്‍റ് സംഭവത്തില്‍ ഖേദം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചതും അര്‍മീനിയന്‍ ഭരണാധികാരിയെ ഇസ്തംബൂളിലേക്ക് ക്ഷണിച്ച് സൗഹൃദത്തിന്‍െറ പുതിയ അധ്യായത്തിനു തുടക്കമിട്ടതും. അതുപോരാ എന്നു ശഠിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അതിന്‍െറ കാരണം പരതേണ്ടത് മറ്റു രോഗങ്ങളിലാണ്. ലോകത്ത് സമാധാനം ഉണ്ടാകട്ടെ ..അതിനാണ് ലോക നേതാക്കള്‍ ശ്രമിക്കേണ്ടത്......

ലുംഅവന്റെഏകത്വത്തിലുംവിശ്വസിക്കുകഎന്നതാണ്. അതിനെതുടര്‍ന്നാണ്അന്ത്യപ്രവാചകരിലുംഇതരപ്രവാചകന്മാരിലുംവിശ്വസിക്കേണ്ടത്.

അല്ലാഹുഏകനാണെന്ന്സമര്‍ത്ഥിക്കുന്നതിന്മുമ്പ്അവന്റെഉണ്മയെസ്ഥിരപ്പെടുത്തേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. അതിന്പ്രഗത്ഭരായപണ്ഡിതന്മാര്‍സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നമാര്‍ഗംആദ്യമായിപുതുവസ്തുക്കള്‍ക്ക്അ

സ്തിത്വമുണ്െടന്ന്തെളിയിക്കുകയാണ്. അതിനുശേഷംഅവര്‍അവയുടെസ്രഷ്ടാവായഅല്ലാഹുവിലെത്തുകയുംഅവന്റെഉണ്മയുംഗുണ

വിശേഷങ്ങളുംസ്ഥിരീകരിക്കുകയുംചെയ്യുന്നു.

വസ്തുക്കളുടെഅസ്തിത്വം

ഒരുവസ്തുവിന്റെയാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യം (ഹഖീഖത്ത്), ഒരുവസ്തുവിന്റെപ്രകൃതം (മാഹിയത്ത്) എന്നിങ്ങനെപറയുമ്പോള്‍അതുകൊണ്ടുദ്ദേശിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്ഏതൊരുസ്ഥിതിവിശേഷംകൊണ്ട്

ആവസ്തുഅതായിത്തീരുന്നുവോ, അതാണ്. അതായത്ഒരുവസ്തുവിനെഅതാക്കിത്തീര്‍ത്തത്ഏതോ, അതുതന്നെ. ഉദാഹരണം: മനുഷ്യന്റെപ്രകൃതവുംയാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യവുംഎന്ത്? സംസാരശേഷിയുള്ള (നാത്വിഖായ) ജീവിഎന്നതാണ്മനുഷ്യന്റെപ്രകൃതവുംയാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യവും.

വസ്തുവിന്റെഅസ്തിത്വവുംയാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യവുംഎങ്ങനെഅറിയാം?

ഒരുവസ്തുവിനെയുംഅതിന്റെയാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യത്തെയുംതിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ്മനസ്സിലാക്കാവുന്നത്. അതിന്വേണ്ടസംവിധാനങ്ങളുംഏകനായഅല്ലാഹുതന്നെസംവിധാനിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. വസ്തുക്കളുടെയാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യത്തെതിരിച്ചറിയാനാവില്ലെന്നഏതാനുംവാദഗതികള്‍ഉണ്െടങ്കിലും

അവയാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യത്തോട്തീരെകൂറുപുലര്‍ത്താത്തവയാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ട്തന്നെഅവയെക്കുറിച്ച്ചര്‍ച്ചചെയ്യേണ്ടതില്ല.

സൃഷ്ടികള്‍ക്ക്വിവരവുംജ്ഞാനവുംനേടിയെടുക്കാനുള്ളപ്രധാനമാര്‍ഗങ്ങള്‍മൂന്നെണ്ണമാണ്:

ഒന്ന്: അന്യൂനമായഇന്ദ്രിയങ്ങള്‍. (ദര്‍ശനം, സ്പര്‍ശനം, ഘ്രാണം, ശ്രവണം, രസനം)

രണ്ട്: സത്യസന്ധമായവിവരണം.

മൂന്ന്: ധിഷണ.

ഇവമൂന്നുമാണ്വിജ്ഞാനവുംവിവരവുംകരസ്ഥമാക്കാനാവുന്നമാര്‍ഗങ്ങളെന്ന്പണ്ഡിതര്‍പറഞ്ഞത്

അന്വേഷണാനു‘വജ്ഞാനത്തിന്റെ (ഇസ്തിഖ്റാജ്) അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിലാണ്.

പഞ്ചേന്ദ്രിയങ്ങള്‍

അന്യൂനമായഇന്ദ്രിയങ്ങള്‍വഴിവിവരംനേടാനാവുമെന്ന്സൂചിപ്പിച്ചു. അവഅഞ്ചെണ്ണമാണ്. അവയുടെഅസ്തിത്വംഅനിഷേധ്യമാണെന്ന്ബുദ്ധിവിധിക്കുന്നു. പഞ്ചേന്ദ്രിയങ്ങള്‍താഴെചേര്‍ക്കുന്നു:

ഒന്ന്: ശ്രവണശക്തി

പഞ്ചേന്ദ്രിയങ്ങളില്‍വളരെപ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടതാണ്ശ്രവണശക്തി. കാതിന്റെഅഗാധതയില്‍സംവിധാനിക്കപ്പെട്ടസിരാവ്യൂഹങ്ങളില്‍ സുരക്ഷിതമായിസൂക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ട (നിക്ഷിപ്തമായ) ഒരുതരംകഴിവാണത്. അതുവഴിയാണ്അന്തരീക്ഷത്തില്‍നിന്ന്തരംഗങ്ങള്‍വായുവിലൂടെശബ്ദമായി

പരിണമിച്ച്ചെവിക്കുഴയിലെത്തുന്നത്അതായത്, തരംഗംശബ്ദമായിഎത്തുന്നതോടെയാണ്കേള്‍ക്കാനുള്ളകഴിവ്അല്ലാഹുനമുക്ക്നല്‍കുന്നത്.

രണ്ട്: ദര്‍ശനം

പഞ്ചേന്ദ്രിയങ്ങളില്‍രണ്ടാമത്തേത്കാഴ്ചശക്തിയാണ്. രണ്ട്നേത്രഞരമ്പുകളില്‍പ്രത്യേകംസൂക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ടശേഷിയെയാണ്കാഴ്ചഎന്നുവിവക്ഷിക്കുന്നത്. ഉള്ളുപൊള്ളയായഈരണ്ടുഞരമ്പുകളുംസംഗമിക്കുകയുംതുടര്‍ന്നുവേര്‍പ്പെടുകയുംചെയ്യുന്നു. പിന്നീട്രണ്ടുകണ്ണുകളുമായിഅവചേരുന്നു. തല്‍ഫലമായിപ്രകാശങ്ങള്‍,നിറങ്ങള്‍,രൂപങ്ങള്‍,ചലനങ്ങള്‍,അളവുകള്‍,തോതുകള്‍തുടങ്ങിയവ

ദൃശ്യമാവുന്നു. മനുഷ്യന്‍ഈകാഴ്ചശക്തിയെഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തുമ്പോള്‍അല്ലാഹുഅവനില്‍കാണാനുള്ളശക്തി

സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നു.

മൂന്ന്: ഘ്രാണം

മണത്തറിയാനുള്ളകഴിവാണ്ഘ്രാണശക്തി. തലച്ചോറിന്റെമുന്‍‘ാഗത്ത്അങ്കുരിച്ചുനില്‍ക്കുന്നരണ്ടുസിരാ

പാലങ്ങളില്‍സൂക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ടശേഷിയാണിത്. ആസിരകളുടെസഹായത്തോടെയാണ്വസ്തുക്കളുടെമണംഅനു‘വപ്പെടുന്നത്. മണത്തിന്റെകണികകള്‍തരംഗങ്ങളായിവായുവില്‍കലര്‍ന്ന്കാറ്റിന്റെസഹായത്തോടെ

തരിമൂക്കിലെത്തുകയാണ്പതിവ്.

നാല്: രസനം (രുചി)

നാവിന്റെചര്‍മത്തില്‍വിന്യസിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നചിലഞരമ്പുകളില്‍പരന്നുനില്‍ക്കുന്നസ

വിശേഷമായൊരുശേഷിയാണ്രുചി. ഈകഴിവിന്റെസഹായംകൊണ്ട്വായിലെത്തുന്നവയുടെസ്വാദറിയാന്‍മനുഷ്യനുസാധിക്കുന്നു. ‘ക്ഷണംവായിലെഉമിനീരുമായികൂടിക്കലരുന്നതോടെഅതിന്റെസ്വാദ്ഞരമ്പുകള്‍നിര്‍ണയിക്കുന്നു.

അഞ്ച്: സ്പര്‍ശനം

ശരീരത്തിലൊന്നാകെപരന്നുകിടക്കുന്നഒരുതരംശക്തിയെയാണ്സ്പര്‍ശനംഎന്നുവിവക്ഷിക്കുന്നത്. ഈശേഷിയുടെസഹായത്തോടെചൂട്, തണുപ്പ്, ഈര്‍പ്പം, വരള്‍ച്ചതുടങ്ങിയവമനസ്സിലാക്കാന്‍സാധിക്കുന്നു.

കാക്ക ....... സത്യത്തില്‍ ഇ കാക്കയെ ആര്‍ക്കും ഇഷ്ടമില്ല. ഇ വൃത്തിക്കെട്ട കാക്ക , ഒന്ന് പോ കാക്കേ ... എന്നല്ലാം പലരും പറയുന്നട്ത് കേള്‍ക്കാറുണ്ട് . വൃത്തിയില്ലാത്ത ജീവിയായി പലരും കാക്കയെ കാണുന്നു. കന്നികണ്ടാതല്ലം കൊതി വലിച്.... പക്ഷെ യദാര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍ കാക്ക എത്ര നല്ല ജീവിയാണ് . ഒന്ന് ഓര്‍ത്തു നോക്ക്, കാക്ക ഒരു പരോപകരിയനെണ്ണ്‍ പറയാം . നമ്മുടെ വീട് മുറ്റത്തെ ചെപ്പു ചവറുകളും മറ്റും കൊത്തിയെടുത് അവിടെ വിടുതിയക്കുന്നത് കക്കയല്ലേ. പശുക്കളുടെയും മറ്റു കാലികളുടെയുമെല്ലാം പുറത്തു കയറിയിരുന്നു അതിന്റെ ശരീരത്തിലെ ചെള്ളും മറ്റും എടുത്ത് കൊടുക്കുന്നത് കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലേ.പിന്നെ ബലി കാക്കകളെ കുറിച്ച് കേട്ടിടില്ലേ ഹിന്ദു വിശ്വാസപ്രകാരം അവയ്ക്ക് ഭയങ്കര പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ട്. പക്ഷെ ഇന്ന് നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിലെ കാക്കകളുടെ എണ്ണം കുറഞ്ഞു കുറഞ്ഞു വരുകയാണ്. അവയ്ക്കും വംശനാശം സംഭവിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കയനെണ്ണ്‍ തോനുന്നു.

രാവിലെ തന്നെ കാക്ക നമ്മുടെ മുറ്റത്തെ മരന്കൊമ്ബിലിരുന്നു ചാഞ്ഞും ചെരിഞ്ഞും നോക്കുന്നത് കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലേ...മുറ്റത്തെ മറക്കൊന്ബിലിരുന്നു കാക്ക ശബ്ധമുണ്ടാക്കുമ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ നമ്മള്‍ പറയും ഇന്ന് വിരുന്നുകാര്‍ വരുമെന്ന്. ഇ കക്കകല്കെങ്ങിനെയവോ ഇ വിവരം കിട്ടുനത് . പിന്നെ ഇ കാക്കകളുടെ പരസ്പര സ്നേഹവും ഐക്യവും ഒരു സംഭവം തന്നെയാണ്. മാനുഷന്മാര്‍ ഇതു കണ്ടുപടിക്കണം. ഒരു കാക്കയ്ക് എന്തങ്കിലും പറ്റി കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലേ ആദ്യം ഒരെണ്ണം പിന്നെ പത്തു അങ്ങിനെ ഒരുപാട് ഒരുപാടെണ്ണം പറന്നു വരുന്നധ് കാണാം..ഒരിക്കെ എന്റെ ചെറുപ്പത്തില്‍ ഇതുപോലൊരു കാക്ക സമ്മേളനം നടക്കുന്നതിന്റെ അടുത്തേക്ക് പോയതാണ് ഞാന്‍, ഒരു കാക്ക വന്നു തലയില്‍ കൊത്തിയതും കരഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ട് വീടിലേക്ക്‌ ഓടിയതും ഇന്നും ഓര്‍മയിലുണ്ട്. അതിനു ശേഷം കുറച്ചു കാലം കാക്കയെ കനുന്നടെ പേടിയായിരുന്നു.

നമ്മുടെ കാക്കയുടെ കുടുംബക്കാരായ കുയിലുകള്‍ കാക്കയുടെ കൂടിലന്‍ മുട്ടയിടുക ഇന്ന് കേട്ടിടുണ്ട്. പാവം കാക്കകള്‍ അവയുടെ മുട്ടയനെന്നു കരുതി അടയിരുന്നു വിരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. സ്വന്തം കുഞ്ഞിനെപ്പോലെ തീറ്റ കൊടുത്തു വളര്‍ത്തുന്നു. ഭയങ്കര ബുധിശാലികളാണ് കാക്കകള്‍ ഇന്ന് പണ്ട് നെഴ്സരിയിലെ ടീച്ചര്‍ പറഞ്ഞത് ഒര്കുകയാണ്. ദാഹിച് വലഞ്ഞ കാക്ക ഒരു കുടത്തിലെ വെള്ളം കുടിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാതെ വന്നപ്പോള്‍ അതിലേക്ക് ചെറിയ കല്ലുകള്‍ പരുക്കിയിട്ടു അങ്ങിനെ വെള്ളം പൊങ്ങി വന്നപ്പോള്‍ അത് കുടിച്ചു ദാഹം മാറ്റിയ കാക്കയുടെ കഥ കേട്ടിട്ടില്ലേ.......അതാണ് കാക്കേടെ ബുദ്ധി......

കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലേ കാക്കേടെ കുളി അത് കാണുന്നത് അത്ര നല്ലതെല്ല എന്നാണ് പഴമക്കാര്‍ പറയുന്നത്. കാക്ക കുളിച്ചാല്‍ കൊക്കാകില്ല, കാക്കയ്ക്കും തന്‍ കുഞ്ഞു പോന്കുഞ്ഞു തുടങ്ങി പഴം ചൊല്ലും കാക്കയെ കുറിച്ചുണ്ട്................

The Kindness of Prophet Muhammad (s)

The Prophet Muhammad taught love, kindness and compassion to his people, and was seen to be the most loving, kind, and compassionate of all of them. The Quran mentions his kind and gentle behavior in these words: "O Messenger of Allah! It is a great Mercy of God that you are gentle and kind towards them; for, had you been harsh and hard-hearted, they would all have broken away from you" (Quran 3:159).

There are many instances that show his kindness and gentleness, especially to the weak and the poor. Anas, who was his helper, said: "I served Allah's Messenger for ten years and he never said to me, 'Shame' or 'Why did you do such-and-such a thing?' or 'Why did you not do such-and-such a thing?'" (Bukhari, 2038).

Once he said to his wife: "0 'A'ishah! Never turn away any needy man from your door empty-handed. 0 'A'ishah! Love the poor; bring them near to you and God will bring you near to Him on the Day of Resurrection". He also went much further on to say: "Seek me among your weak ones, for you are given provision, or you are given help only by reason of the presence of your weak ones". (Rahman, Encyclopedia of Seerah, VOL. VIII, p. 151) God Almighty is Kind, and the Prophet imitated Allah's example in its perfection by showing kindness to his servants and all creatures without any regard for their beliefs, color or nationality. The Prophet said: "God is kind and likes kindness in all things" (Bukhari, 6601).

His heart ached within him at the corrupt state of his fellow-Meccans and their rejection of One God. The Holy Quran testifies to it in these words: "0 Muhammad, you will, perhaps, consume yourself with grief because the people do not believe" (Quran 26:3). In Surah Kahf, we read: "Well, 0 Muhammad, it may be that you will kill yourself for their sake out of sorrow if they do not believe in this Message." (Quran 18:6). And Surah Fatir says: "So let not your life be consumed in grief for their sake." (Quran 35:8).

He took a great interest in the welfare of all people and had great compassion for people in trouble. The Prophet Muhammad imitated the attributes of God par excellence and translated them into practice in the highest form possible for man. Kindness is an attribute of Allah, which has no limits. It is extensive and encompasses all things and all beings without discrimination. Likewise was the kindness of the Prophet. He extended it to all beings, both animate and inanimate and benefited all without measure. The Quranic words for the Prophet's kindness, ra'ufun rahirn (Quran 9:128) are very intensive and comprehensive in meaning and convey the true nature and extent of the Prophet's kindness to people. The Prophet said: "One of the finest acts of kindness is for a man to treat his fathers' friends in a kindly way after he has departed" (Abu dawud, 5123)

The issue of treating friends well was also extended to include relations: "He who wishes to have his provision enlarged and his term of life prolonged should treat his relatives well" (Bukhari, 5985). He emphasized on this matter because he deeply held the view that "Only kindness prolongs life, and a person is deprived of provisions for the faults he commits" (Ibn Majah). Bahz b. Hakim, on his father's authority, said that his grandfather told him that he had asked Allah's Messenger to whom he should show kindness and that the Prophet had replied: "Your mother." He asked who came next and he replied: "Your mother." He asked who came next and he replied for the third time: "Your mother." He again asked who came next and he replied: "Your father, then your relatives in order of relationship" (Abu dawud, 5120). He dwelled on the issue of treating orphans humanely as he stated that "The best house among the Muslims is one which contains an orphan who is well treated, and the worst house among the Muslims is one which contains an orphan who is badly treated" (Ibn Majah, 3679). This means that the Prophet cautioned his followers against general maltreatment of anyone regardless of his status. By extending good treatment from friends to relatives and now to neighbors, Prophet Muhammad was intent in making all humans interdependent as he emphasized in the following words: "All creatures are Allah's dependants, and those dearest to God are the ones who treat His dependants kindly" (Rahman, VOL VIII, p. 154). He emphasized the kind treatment of women again and again in his speeches:

Treat women kindly, since they are your helpers; . . . you have your rights upon your wives and they have their rights upon you. Your right is that they shall not allow anyone you dislike to enter your bed or your home, and their right is that you should treat them well. (from the Farewell Sermon of the Prophet)
Once a number of women complained to the Prophet's wives about their ill-treatment by their husbands. On hearing of this, the Prophet said: "Such persons among you are not good persons." (Abu Dawud, 1834). This condemnation by the Prophet himself was an indication that no one will be accepted before God who, while on earth, decided to be unkind to women. Another person said to the Prophet: "0 Messenger of Allah! My relatives are such that although I cooperate with them, they cut me off; I am kind to them but they ill treat me." The Prophet said this in reply: "So long as you continue as you are, God will always help you and He will protect you against their mischief" (Muslim, 4640). This was not only a way of bringing comfort to the mind of the worried person but one of the communicative techniques of the Prophet to assure who ever found himself in that situation to look up to God to be consoled and protected. So it was pointless to preach vengeance to this kind of people suffering from this similar fate. Indeed, Prophet Muhammad was nothing short of a competent counselor.
He was always counseling people to be goodhearted regardless of their sex, age or gender. Once Asma bint Abu Bakr's mother, who was still an unbeliever, came to see her in Madinah. She told this to the Prophet and said: "My mother has come to see me and she is expecting something from me. May I oblige her?" The Prophet said: "Yes, be kind to your mother" (Muslim, 2195). This attitude of the Prophet was equally extended to Zainab as-Saqafia, the wife of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and an Ansari woman. She went to see the Prophet and to inquire whether it would be a charity if they spent something on their husbands and on the orphans under their care. The Prophet said: "They will get a two-fold reward, one for kindness towards their relatives and the other for charity" (Bukhari, 1466).
There are many Ahadith concerning his kindness to animals, birds and insects: "God prescribed kindness towards everything; so when you slaughter any animal, slaughter it well; when you sacrifice, make your sacrifice good. And let everyone sharpen his weapon and make it easy for his sacrificed animal" (Muslim, 5055). He made this kind of statement to demonstrate his love for both humans and animals. In essence, Prophet Muhammad was equally showing his followers that he too is feels pain.

"All the evidence shows that we are nearing the end of man's tragic experiment in independence from God."

Wow, I thought. They get it. And suddenly I felt a burst of solidarity with the Jehovah's Witnesses. The words are from one of their tracts, which was given to me because I have this passion for talking about God - a wild glee, almost, for stepping up to The Big Serious and wrestling theology with the neighborhood proselytizers.

There are other ways to express the urgency of our situation, leaving God out of it. An eco-conscious soul might warn that the human species must reconnect with indigenous wisdom and the circle of life. But no matter. What strikes me is the growing recognition, in so many quarters, of the unsustainability of our global culture and the need for, and inevitability of, profound change.

Indeed, it's more than mere "recognition" - it's a primal disorientation. The culture of moneyed interests, war and techno-diversion, which is global in scope, is killing us at the same time that its media apologists, and the anonymous experts and authorities they quote, reassure us that everything is fine and under control.

I think the Christian End Times movement (the message of my Jehovah's Witness tract), the growing buzz over the Mayan calendar prediction (we shift into a new age on Dec. 21, 2012 . . . you can even order end-of-world mugs and T-shirts) and the science-based urgency of climate-change warnings all emanate from the same rawly intuitive sense: An unprecedented planetary shift is under way, which we can aggravate and perhaps turn into Armageddon if we continue ignoring our own thoughtless contributions to the situation.

The seas are degenerating far faster than anyone has predicted, the report says, because of the cumulative impact of a number of severe individual stresses, ranging from climate warming and sea-water acidification, to widespread chemical pollution and gross overfishing."

Thus began an article last week in the U.K.'s Independent by environment editor Michael McCarthy, on the recently issued report of a panel of leading marine scientists convened in Oxford earlier this year by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

The human contribution to oceanic dead zones is significant:

". . . new scientific research suggests that pollutants, including flame-retardant chemicals and synthetic musks found in detergents, are being traced in the polar seas, and that these chemicals can be absorbed by tiny plastic particles in the ocean which are in turn ingested by marine creatures such as bottom-feeding fish.

"Plastic particles also assist the transport of algae from place to place, increasing the occurrence of toxic algal blooms - which are also caused by the influx of nutrient-rich pollution from agricultural land."

And then there's the Las Conchas fire, one of several wildfires now tearing across the state of New Mexico. The blaze has already forced the evacuation of thousands of people in Los Alamos, home of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, a vast complex housing much of the nation's nuclear weapons research.

But not to worry. A Reuters story assures us that - what else? - everything is fine: "Explosive materials on the laboratory's grounds are stored safely in underground bunkers made of concrete and steel, as well as earthen berms,Ó" according to a spokesman for the lab (and not simply the lab, but the entire military-industrial status quo).

The story abandons us in a state of feel-good pseudo-security, not bothering to report the technical concerns of environmentalists, e.g.: "One (concern) is the fact that over six decades the Lab has blown up a lot of uranium and depleted uranium in dynamic high explosives experiments in the general area in front of the fire," according to an update from New Mexico's Nuclear Watch blog, quoted by former lab scientist Subhankar Banerjee. "We don't know to what extent the shrapnel or debris has been cleaned up and could possibly be aerosolized."

Speaking of the entire nuclear industry - both the weapons- and energy-production components - which is reeling from environmental disasters from Japan to Nebraska to New Mexico, Harvey Wasserman writes: "We know only two things for certain: Worse is yet to come, and those in charge are lying about it - at least to the extent of what they actually know, which is nowhere near enough."

In a sense, "those in charge" is all of us. We're in charge of our own awareness, and we can remain in denial or grope, individually and collectively, for the wisdom that will help us face, and survive, whatever is to come.

The Theology of Apocalypse
May 21, 2011 might prove to be a decisive day for some American Christians in one way or the other.

A California-based radio evangelist group of Harold Camping is claiming that Judgment day will take place on May 21, 2011. Exactly five months later the world would come to an end.

What if they are proved wrong?

Life would go on as usual as it has gone for thousands of years amidst all the doom's day prophecies. Well-known Christian scholars have predicted the end of time at least 44 times in the last 2,000 years and each time God proved them wrong. It is interesting that a wrong that is proven wrong is never accepted wrong. New dates are announced and a new theology is born. The confusion creates more confusion causing panic and fear among some people. Every time a dooms day prediction is made, the sale of books predicting the end of time increases, some people start selling their homes, and others start conserving food and other resources to meet the challenge of the time.

How do they determine the end of time dates?

The group that is predicting the end of time on May 21 claims that the flood of Noah took place some 4990 years before the birth of Jesus and it was in the year 4990 BC that Noah was told there would be yet 7 days until the flood of waters would be upon the earth. Now, each day is counted equivalent to 1000 years, we get 7000 years. And when we project 7000 years into the future from 4990 BC, we find that it falls on the year 2011 AD.

The group claims that the year 2011 AD will be the 7000th year from the flood of Noah's day. It will be the end of the length of time given to mankind.

Why is JUDGMENT DAY on MAY 21st, 2011?

The group claims that on May 21st, 1988, God finished using the churches and congregations of the world for good work. The Spirit of God left all churches and Satan entered into the churches. Thus the group believes that churches all over the world are being ruled by Satan for the last 23 years.

In the view of the group the full 23-year tribulation period concludes on May 21st, 2011 as it is the exact day that the great tribulation comes to its end.

The group claims that on May 21st God will raise up all the dead that have ever died from their graves. Earthquakes will ravage the whole world as the earth will no longer conceal its dead. People who died as saved individuals will experience the resurrection of their bodies and immediately leave this world forever to be with the Lord. Those who died unsaved will be raised up as well, but only to have their lifeless bodies scattered about the face of all the earth. Death will be everywhere and On October 21, the world would come to an end.

The group is silent on the return of Jesus and his role after his return. There are other Christian groups that believe that Jesus would return soon, some predict that by the end of this year, he would be back in this world to lead an armed struggle against Jews for allegedly torturing and killing Jesus, a struggle that will cause more than two thirds of Jews to be killed by Jesus and his followers and one thirds of them to convert to Christianity. Interestingly, the current pope has recently absolved the Jews from plotting against Jesus.

In the doctrine of the end of the world, the coming of a Messiah plays a central role. With the exception of Buddhists, almost every religious group including Muslims has been waiting for the return of a Messiah who would rid the world of all evil.

In the apocalyptic theology, the Messiah's role would be to establish a peaceful world through the killing of all the trouble makers. The trouble makers are defined as those who do not believe the ideas accepted in the religion that is promoting the claim of the return of Messiah. Thus for Christians, all those who are non-Christians are trouble makers. For Muslims, all non-Muslims are trouble makers, for Hindus all non-Hindus are the deviants and for Jews all non-Jewish people are the rebels. Imagine if the so called Messiahs of all religious communities appear at the same, what would be the fate of the world?

There are also a number of Muslims who believe in the second coming of Jesus and the arrival of Mehdi. One can find an assortment of Muslim literature, old and new that outlines this type of apocalyptic predictions. However, no one has quoted a single verse from the Quran in justification of their position. Many quote from the books of ahadith (Saying of the Prophet) about the end of time without referring to the decisive Quranic words that say that end time is known only to God almighty.

Currently, there are some fifteen theories circulating in our world about the end time. A brief description is given here so that we can get a better understanding of this topic from various sources.
Nostradamus - While Nostradamus is very vague, he has predicted the end of the world through his past prophecy and drawings to be around the year 2000. The exact date is never given, but he indicates that the world will end through nuclear warfare or some other possible cause, by the means of "the heavens will catch on fire."

Web Bot - A computer program used to search through data and pull together important data that can predict future events. It was built for investors and since then has a built a record for the prediction of the future events.

The Bible - The Bible predicts that the world will come to an end when the Antichrist rises. Some believe the Antichrist is already among us and the countdown to the end of world has already begun.

The Antichrist - Nostradamus and the Bible predict the end of the world to occur when the Antichrist rises. A number of extreme Christian groups are claiming Obama to be the Antichrist. They hold that when his presidential term is just about done the world will come to an end.

Mayan calendar ends on 12/21/2012, symbolizing the end of a cycle and into a new one as earth enters the "cosmic womb." Some believe that a transformation through other forms of life in our solar system will come to earth or earth will completely perish.

Polar Shift - Polar shift can cause increased weather patterns and potentially catastrophic climate change. The polar shift wouldn't cause earth itself to end, but rather an increased amount of damage dealt upon earth via earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanoes and so on.

Planet X - A new planet in our solar system that is suppose to collide with earth in 2012. The orbital pattern of the planet comes within very close proximity of earth and provides relatively strong evidence for the collision of earth. Though this evidence may seem conclusive, other calculations have been made to show that it will pass by earth.

Comets - Comets from Planet X as it approaches earth can enter earth's atmosphere and either reach earth or disintegrate upon entering the atmosphere.

Meteor - A large meteor can collide with earth causing everything on earth to become extinct. This is a very similar scenario to the extinction of Dinosaurs.

Nuclear Warfare - Everything will end through war and the destruction of atomic bombs. This theory is highly unlikely saying as someone needs to be alive to launch the last bomb thus proving at least some civilization will live.

The Alignment - Potentially earth can be lost in a black hole during the winter solstice in 2012. Since earth will be at the center of the Milky Way, where a black hole is located, some astrologers believe we will become lost within it. No one knows the actual outcome of this and it just seems to be another proposed theory of a 2012 predictions.

The I Ching - An ancient text used to predict random events. It was calculated out into a timeline and when doing so it mysteriously ends on the year 2012. Since it is based on sequence of events people are suspicious about how it could just end on that date.

Solar Storms - NASA has now confirmed that in the year 2012, the sun would have reached its peak of solar storms. It will be unlike anything earth has experienced.

Tibetan Monks - With the use of Remote Viewing, the monks are able to predict the future. The Tibetan Monks have declared doomsday to be in the year 2012 through nuclear warfare. They also declared that we will be saved by extraterrestrial life.

Depression - Some economists believe that a great depression is to occur in 2012.

In the case of Muslims, the best source about end time is the divine message preserved in the pages of the Quran. Only God knows about the end of time, says the Quran repeatedly. The Quran reminds people to be ready for their end every second of their life.

Life can lose its connection with the physical body any moment, the Quran asserts. Thus every second is an end time. This Quranic guidance empowers us to take control of our own lives and discipline ourselves on the basis of guidance from God rather than rely on some one else to change us.

The Quran says that Allah does not change the condition of a people unless they change themselves. The Quran does not say that conditions will be changed only with the intervention of a Messiah or a Mehdi, whose arrival dates are not known to anyone. The belief in the theology of Apocalypse, in reality, challenges the foundation of the fundamental Quranic message that says that those who believe in the divine guidance and act accordingly are the ones who succeed ultimately. The Quran also says that they would not be questioned for a future that they are not aware of; rather they would be questioned for the present in which they live.

Some people point to the increased number of disasters in our world to support the theology of Apocalypse. We must understand that the disasters, earthquakes, tsunamis and cyclones have been taking place around us since time immemorial. For instance, the US Geological Survey estimates that several million earthquakes occur in the world each year. They occur on the basis of laws that God imbued in rocks at the time of their creation. If we learn those laws, we might be in a position to avoid human population in those areas where they occur. Many go undetected because they hit remote areas or have very small magnitudes. We feel the impact of some of these events more on our lives because of two major factors. The information about these events now travels much faster than it used to. Secondly, human population around disaster prone areas has increased by many folds over since the last 500 years.

Let us not be consumed by issues that are only known to God. Come May 22 or October 22 we can be rest assured things that are supposed to occur based on the laws of God will happen. For now let's make the best of today.

The Unique Gift of Life

The following is excerpted from the book "Islam 2.0" by Dr. Maher Hathout in which he shares a conversation with the Muslim youth.

Your life is a very precious gift from God. Count back to one year before your first birthday, and then try to imagine your state - your state of nothingness. You can not. You may be able to contain and grasp "things," not "nothing." You were born and came to life, not because you wanted to, but because you became. Through a decision by an authority higher than you, and through a process that you did not participate in, you came to occupy a place in existence.

With the dramatic event of your birth, you came to life with three huge realities.

First, you are unique. Nobody else is identical to you, not even your identical twin or, in this age of cloning, even your clone, because your psychological, spiritual and energetic content is poured into your physical being in a unique way. When God blows a spirit into each individual, it manifests in a special way. You are one of a kind.

Second, you are immortal. Your biological structure, which is the product of the substance of earth, will degrade and recycle in the biological cycle on earth, but your energy, soul and spirit will always be. If you appreciate your uniqueness and your immortality, your individual values, responsibility and accountability will emerge. God reminds us in the Qur'an that;

"[And God shall say.'] "And now, indeed, you have come unto Us in a lonely state, even as We created you in the first instance,' and you have left behind you, all that We bestowed on you [in your lifetime]. And we do not see with you those intercessors of yours whom you supposed to have a share in Gods divinity with regard to yourselves! Indeed, all the bonds between you [and your earthly life] are now severed, and all your former fancies have forsaken you!" (6:94)
"and every one of them will appear before Him on Resurrection Day in a lonely state. " (19:95)
The third reality that comes with the happy event of your birth is a cobweb of expanding circles of relationships. These are different from the countless relationships you acquire throughout your life, such as your friends, neighbors, teammates, and spouses. The first package of relationships that come with your birth day are not subject to your choice; you do not choose your parents, siblings, kin, ancestors, race, gender, place of birth or even country of origin. This category of relationships is a gift form God, you accept, appreciate, and nurture. While the acquired relationships like spouse, friends, and career need prudence.

While you will inevitably gain and lose, everything you lose may be regained, except one thing, time.

It is interesting that you probably know the exact time, date and place of when and where your birth took place, but this is only because you were told about it. What is less clear is the elusive and mystical moment you truly became aware of your existence. This blurry time, when you became cognizant that you are you, and that you actually exist, just snuck up on you. From the moment of that realization, each individual experiences life in a unique way. While you may be exposed to the same circumstances as many others, how you feel, perceive, taste, understand and react to life circumstances is unique to you.

During the predetermined length of your life, you embark on new information, experiences, and habits in which you learn and perform as a human on this planet. While you will inevitably gain and lose, everything you lose may be regained, except one thing, time. If you lose time, it is gone. Any period of time is a chunk of life, both precious and irretrievable. Based on these simple realities, you will have some basic decisions to make: Are you going to waste your life or are you going to use it? Is your life going to center around you or will you reach wider spheres of involvement and concern? Wasting life partially or totally, i.e. in one lump or in installments, all can be considered a crime close to murder or suicide, even if the gradual waste does not seem that dramatic.

There are many forms and ways to waste a lifetime. With a careful look around you, you can recognize many of them: leading an aimless and purposeless life; abusing your own body, mind and soul; eroding the environment, being shallow and inefficient; all are ways to let the wonderful opportunity that we call life slip away. A life centered on your own self is selfish and never provides fulfillment. Since human beings are interdependent, you will not be happy if surrounded by unhappiness, envy, and animosity. A life that is not dedicated to a higher cause is an elusive quest for unattainable happiness.

There are three elements to what may be described as a happy life:

a life that is fully utilized (i.e. a life of awareness and purposeful activism),

a life that is dedicated to a higher cause,

and a life that is lived in balance.

The concept of balance is very important because an imbalanced life is one that is not in harmony with the laws of nature or existence. Nature is in perfect balance and is all around us, from the orbits to the galaxies to the structure of molecules and atoms to the diversity of species to the physiology within any unit of these species. A simple example which demonstrates this point lies within your own body. Anatomically, you are a fusion of two halves in balance (eyes, ears, nostrils, limbs). The right and left brain are distinct but, through their connection, maintain balanced performance. Perfect balance further exists between the muscles of flexion and extension, the structure of your skeleton, and in the miraculous work of the endocrinal and hormonal system.

The balance that exists between the spiritual and moral, through the soul, body, and intellect, gives you the ability to see and recognize the fine lines in behavior, that if crossed, will lead to imbalance. The line that exists between courage and recklessness, caution and cowardice, saving and stinginess, honesty and rudeness, generosity and squandering, pride and arrogance.

Conversely, injustice, encroachment on the rights of others, bias and double standards all act to tilt the scale of balance and run contrary to the laws of existence and the nature of creation as manifested in the large and small creatures within the kingdom of God. God says in the Qur'an:
"And the skies.' has He raised high and has devised [for all things] a measure so that you [too, 0 humanity,] might never transgress the measure [of what is right].' weigh, therefore, [your deeds] with equity, and cut not the measure short!" (55:7-9)
Within this framework of understanding and appreciation of the simple unadulterated nature of life and creation lies the true understanding of Islam. Islam is the affirmation of these basics. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described the religion as "Deen al Fitra,Ó" meaning the way of the unadulterated original nature and as the Qur'an described:

"And do, set thy face steadfastly towards the [one ever-true] faith, turning away from all that is false, in accordance with the natural disposition which God has instilled into humanity.' [for] not to allow any change to corrupt what God has thus created - this is the [purpose of the one] ever-true faith,' but most people know it not."
(30:30)
Through integrating these basic realities of life with the message of God and His call to comply to His will - which is manifested in His natural laws of existence in its universality, global humanity and harmony as comprehensive, internal, and external peace - that you can become a Muslim, citizen of the world, mercy to all, guardian of justice, supporter and enjoiner of what is good, opposer of what is evil, and promoter of human dignity for all.

Only then can you cooperate with those who seek righteousness and awareness. Only then will Islam be your zone of comfort, will you come home to Islam, feel complete harmony and be liberated not shackled, lightened not burdened, natural not artificial. Only then will your life as a Muslim be to enjoy not endure, allowing you to be yourselves, not a facade.

So for the Human Race, We May Say: Happy Birthday!

Churches Open Doors to Muslim Worship

They see it as their Christian duty. But others disagree, saying it extends the hand of fellowship where it was never intended to go.

Two Protestant churches are taking some heat from critics for opening their church buildings to Muslims needing places to worship because their own facilities were either too small, or under construction.

Heartsong Church in Cordova, Tenn., let members of the Memphis Islamic Center hold Ramadan prayers there last September. And Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Alexandria, Va., allows the Islamic Circle of North America to hold regular Friday prayers in their building while their new mosque is being built.

Diane Bechtol of Aldersgate says this is something Christians are called to do: Be neighborly and develop relationships - even those who don't share your beliefs.

"I think it's a tenet of our Christian faith, and that is that we extend hospitality to the stranger," said Bechtol. "We are a congregation that wants to be helpful to people and if we are asked to help a neighbor in need, that's what we do."

But Dr. Alex McFarland, a Christian theologian and radio talk show host, charged these churches "have crossed the line from respect and tolerance, to ... affirmation and endorsement.

"We as the church are called to show love, we're called to help. But to let a building simultaneously be used for the activities of a mosque and also the activities of Jesus Christ, it's just incompatible. And I think it's one more example of political correctness and hyper-tolerance gone awry."

Mohamed Elsanousi adamantly disagrees, saying it's good for the country to know churches like these are extending a hand to Muslims.

Elsanousi is National Community Outreach Director of the Islamic Society of North America. He says "allowing people the freedom of worship is respectful and strengthens the relationship."

Elsanousi says there are many churches and even synagogues in America where Muslims share space with Christians. "We feel good about it," he says.

That trend may continue as the Muslim population across the U.S. continues to grow.

Mosque construction is at an all-time high. As of September, there were 1,897 mosques in the United States, a 57 percent increase since 2000.

Several of those building projects have caused friction with local communities. According to the Pew Forum, there are 35 proposed Mosques and Islamic centers that have encountered resistance. The most prominent, the Ground Zero mosque, is just two blocks from the World Trade Center site.

Dr. Jason Hood, an Evangelical theologian, says there are other ways Christians can share the love of Christ without building a bridge too far. "Caring for Muslim refugees is particularly important," he says, along with "sharing meals and recreational opportunities."

Heartsong's relationship with its Muslim neighbors has developed into an annual Thanksgiving meal between the two faiths, and the use of a joint 15-acre community park.

Steve Stone, Heartsong's senior pastor, wrote in Christianity Today that "No thought at all was given to the political ramifications ... The decision was firmly based only on our understanding of the mission and nature of the church." He also pointed out that "there was no trading of theologies. They are Muslims; we are Jesus followers; both of us are clear about that."

But McFarland says it's good to remember the "political ramifications" of Muslim-Christian interaction.

"What if we went to Muslims and said 'Hey, can we use your mosque for the worship of Jesus, the incarnate son of God, the one that said 'no one comes to the Father but through him.' I doubt there would be a lot of reciprocity'."

McFarland says the groups run the risk of creating something called "Chrislam" - a combination of the two faiths that essentially ignores the big white elephant in the room: the exclusive claims of both Christianity and Islam.

A Christmas Greeting From a Muslim Daughter (By: Kari Ansari)

When I became a Muslim thirteen years ago this month, I left behind the Christmas traditions my family celebrated every year of my childhood. My mother was able to transform our Southern California home into a Winter Wonderland as soon as we walked in the door; it may have been 75 degrees and sunny outside, but inside we felt we were in a Currier and Ives world of red velvet beribboned pine boughs, twinkling lights and beautiful music. I loved it. The Christmas season and our small traditions remained the same no matter how many years passed. My mother worked extremely hard to build warm, and loving holiday memories, and I sincerely cherish them.

Like many American homes, there wasn't much Christ in my family's Christmas. There would always be some discussion surrounding the reason for our celebration, but we didn't attend church services or talk too much about what my parents believed. The beautiful nativity on the mantle, hand-painted by my grandmother, was flanked by tasteful, secular decorations. This led to a kind of vague confusion between the miraculous birth of Jesus, and the magical feat of Santa Claus zipping around the world in one night.

Nostalgia not withstanding, thinking about Christmas is now far more meaningful to me on a spiritual level than it was when I was young. The fact that Muslims accept and believe in the virgin birth of Jesus has been a golden thread that links my childhood Christmas memories to my very fulfilling adult life as a Muslim.

The world's more than 1.5 billion Muslims would like their Christian neighbors to know that we believe in the Annunciation; in the Quran we read that God sent the angels to Mary:

"When the angels said: O Mary, surely God gives you good news with a Word from Him of one whose name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, worthy of regard in this world and the hereafter and of those who are made near to God. And he shall speak to the people when in the cradle and when of old age, and he shall be one of the good ones." Quran 3:45-46

The Quran has only one chapter named after a woman; Chapter 19 is titled "Mary", or as it is translated in Arabic -- Maryam. The Quran tells us that the infant Jesus, (or Isa as it is translated in Arabic), spoke from Mary's arms:

"...He said: Surely I am a servant of God; He has given me the Book and made me a prophet; And He has made me blessed wherever I may be, and He has enjoined on me prayer and charity so long as I live; And dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me insolent, unblessed; And peace on me on the day I was born, and on the day I die, and on the day I am raised to life.'" Quran 19:30-33*
While Muslims don't celebrate Christmas, we believe in the awesome and miraculous birth of Jesus, in the miracles he performed by God's Grace, and in the message of love and peace Jesus brought to the world.
I hope my family knows that I am more attached to the account of Jesus and Mary than I ever was as a child, now that I am a practicing Muslim. It is a vital part of my faith; a faith that I share with over a billion and a half people around the world.

This is my Christmas card to my family, and all my Christian friends and neighbors: Peace on earth and goodwill toward men.

The Pesticide was sprayed aerially with specially used helicopters .As the plantations are mainly in mountainous areas, the pesticide drains and gets washed down the slopes during rains into drinking water below. Consuming this water will result in diseases ranging from physical deformities, cancers, birth disorders and damages to brain and nervous system. During 2000-2001 the victims got huge media exposure and resulted in Study on the victim’s .The study of Endosulfan effects showed greater Abnormalities such as mental retardation, cancer and infertility in the victims. But the pesticide and fertilizer industries where very fast to rubbish the studies. Endosulfan is manufactured and distributed in India by Hindustan Fertilisers limited.

It’s clear that the usage of the Pesticide on the Kerala government owned cashew plantation was a result of nexus between Government officials and Pesticide industries. In Kerala all other cashew plantations are grown without pesticides. The Kerala government spend millions on Pesticides to increase yield and have poisoned the fertile land. India is the largest producer of Endosulfan in the world and also the consumer. It’s not only Kerala facing the dilemma of Endosulfan, Recent reports show some parts of Karnataka too affected badly by the usage of Endosulfan Pesticide.

Even though the Kerala cashew plantations corporation has stopped aerial spraying Endosulfan in Kasaragod instead they have started using a newer pesticide. Endosulfan has been banned for 2 years in Kerala but Kerala Government is discussing about revoking the ban. People are still facing the side effects of Endosulfan in Kerala and Karnataka but the Indian Government has not yet banned the deadly chemical. The Pesticide is still used for cotton and Cashew plantations in many parts of the nation …Karnataka, Punjab, Assam and Andhra Pradesh. India needs an effective chemical norm and should enact a chemical & pesticide policy which would help people affected from chemical accidents & disasters; also stop usage of deadly pesticides for agriculture. Even during the Bhopal gas tragedy Government did nothing for the victims. The victims of Endosulfan also were turned down by the Government ….It is clear that all these chemical disasters are due to ignorant and negligent policies from the Government…..

ജീവിതത്തിലെത്തിച്ചേരേണ്ട ആത്യന്തികമായ ലക്ഷ്യത്തിലേക്കുള്ള കൃത്യമായ ദിശയെയാണ് യഥാര്‍ഥത്തില്‍ വികസനം എന്ന സാങ്കേതിക ശബ്ദം പ്രതിനിധാനം ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ആ ലക്ഷ്യം ഇനിയും അവ്യക്തവും അതിലേക്കുള്ള ദിശ അനിര്‍ണിതവുമാണെങ്കില്‍ പിന്നെ പുരോഗതിക്കെന്തര്‍ഥമാണുള്ളത്? കൃത്യമായ ലക്ഷ്യബോധമില്ലാതെ ഇരുട്ടില്‍ തപ്പുന്നതിന് പുരോഗതി എന്നു പറയാനാവില്ല. അതിനെ പുരോഗതിയായിക്കാണുന്നവര്‍ വികസനത്തിന്റെ ഉദ്ദേശ്യത്തെ മാത്രമല്ല, സ്വന്തം ആത്മാവിനെക്കൂടി കളവാക്കുകയാണ്.

അവരെ ഉപമിക്കാവുന്നത് തീ കത്തിച്ച ഒരാളോടാകുന്നു. പരിസരമാകെ പ്രകാശിതമായപ്പോള്‍ അല്ലാഹു അവരുടെ പ്രകാശം കെടുത്തിക്കളയുകയും ഒന്നും കാണാനാവാതെ ഇരുട്ടില്‍(തപ്പാന്‍)അവരെ വിടുകയും ചെയ്തു. ബധിരരും ഊമകളും അന്ധ•ാരുമാകുന്നു അവര്‍. അതിനാല്‍ അവര്‍ (സത്യത്തിലേക്ക്) തിരിച്ചുവരികയില്ല അല്ലെങ്കില്‍(അവരെ) ഉപമിക്കാവുന്നത് ആകാശത്തുനിന്ന് ചൊരിയുന്ന ഒരു പേമാരിയോടാകുന്നു. അതോടൊപ്പം കൂരിരുട്ടും ഇടിയും മിന്നലുമുണ്ട് ഇടിനാദങ്ങള്‍ നിമിത്തം മരണം ഭയന്ന് അവര്‍ വിരലുകള്‍ ചെവിയില്‍ തിരുകുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ അല്ലാഹു സത്യനിഷേധികളെ വലയം ചെയ്തിരിക്കയാണ്. മിന്നല്‍ അവരുടെ കണ്ണുകളെ റാഞ്ചിയെടുക്കുമാറാകുന്നു. അത് അവര്‍ക്ക് വെളിച്ചം നല്‍കുമ്പോഴെല്ലാം അവര്‍ ആ വെളിച്ചത്തില്‍ നടന്നു പോകും. ഇരുട്ടാകുമ്പോള്‍ അവര്‍ നിന്നു പോവുകയും ചെയ്യും. അല്ലാഹു ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ അവരുടെ കേള്‍വിയും കാഴ്ചയും അവന്‍ പാടെ നശിപ്പിച്ചു കളയുക തന്നെ ചെയ്യുമായിരുന്നു. നിസ്സംശയം, അല്ലാഹു ഏതു കാര്യത്തിനും കഴിവുള്ളവനാകുന്നു.

രണ്ടു തലങ്ങള്‍ ഉള്‍ക്കൊള്ളുന്നതാണെങ്കിലും ഇസ്ലാമിക ലോകവീക്ഷണത്തെ ഒരു ദ്വന്ദ്വമായി ഒതുക്കാനാവില്ല. ഒന്ന് സ്വതന്ത്രവും മറ്റേത് അതിനെ ഉപജീവിച്ചു നില്‍ക്കുന്നതുമാണ്. ഒന്ന് പരമവും മറ്റേത് ആപേക്ഷികവുമാണ്. ഒന്ന് യഥാര്‍ഥവും മറ്റേത് പ്രസ്തുത യാഥാര്‍ഥ്യത്തിന്റെ ആവിഷ്കാരവുമാണ്. ഈയര്‍ഥത്തില്‍ സത്യവും യാഥാര്‍ഥ്യവും ഒന്നേയുള്ളൂ. എല്ലാ ഇസ്ലാമിക മൂല്യങ്ങളും ആത്യന്തികമായി പ്രസ്തുത യാഥാര്‍ഥ്യവുമായി മാത്രമാണ് ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ, വ്യക്തിയാവട്ടെ, സമൂഹമാവട്ടെ മുസ്ലിമിനെ സംബന്ധിച്ചിടത്തോളം പരിവര്‍ത്തനത്തിലേക്കും പുരോഗതിയിലേക്കും വികസനത്തിലേക്കും പരിപൂര്‍ണതയിലേക്കുമുള്ള ഏതൊരു ശ്രമവും പൂര്‍ണമായും നിര്‍ണയിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത് ഏക യാഥാര്‍ഥ്യത്തിലൂന്നിയ ലോകവീക്ഷണത്താലാണ്. അതിനാല്‍ പ്രായോഗികജീവിതത്തില്‍ തന്നെ സത്യവും ഇസ്ലാമും തമ്മിലുള്ള താളൈക്യത്തിന് വിള്ളലേല്‍പിക്കുന്ന യാതൊരു പരിവര്‍ത്തനത്തിനും വിധേയപ്പെടാതെ, കാലത്തിന്റെ കുത്തൊഴുക്കില്‍ സ്വയം നഷ്ടമാവാതെ, ലൌകിക ജീവിതപരിസരങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നുമഭിമുഖീകരിക്കുന്ന വെല്ലുവിളികള്‍ക്ക് വിധേയപ്പെടാതെതന്നെ സ്വന്തം വിശ്വാസ പ്രമാണത്തിനനുസൃതമായി ജീവിക്കാന്‍ മുസ്ലിമിന് സാധ്യമാവുന്നു.

ഇസ്ലാമില്‍ മനുഷ്യന്, യാതൊരു മാറ്റത്തിരുത്തലിനും വിധേയപ്പെടാത്ത ഖുര്‍ആനുണ്ട് കൂടെ. അന്ത്യദൂതനായ മുഹമ്മദ് മുസ്തഫ(സ)യിലൂടെ അല്ലാഹു വെളിപ്പെടുത്തിയ, അന്തിമവും പരിപൂര്‍ണവുമായ ദൈവിക വചനമാണത്. മുസ്ലിം സദാ കൂടെ കൊണ്ടുനടക്കുന്ന സുവ്യക്തമായ മാര്‍ഗദര്‍ശിയാണ് ഖുര്‍ആന്‍. അക്ഷരങ്ങളില്‍ മാത്രമല്ല, നാവിലും മനസ്സിലും ഹൃദയത്തിലും സദാവര്‍ഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഖുര്‍ആന്‍ മുസ്ലിമിനെ സംബന്ധിച്ചിടത്തോളം തന്റെ സ്വത്വഘടനയെതന്നെ ചലനാത്മകമാക്കുന്ന ശക്തിയാണ്. സ്വത്വലോകത്ത് അന്ധകാരത്താലാവൃതമായ നിലയില്ലാ കടലിനു നടുവിലൊറ്റപ്പെട്ട ദ്വീപുപോലെയാണ് ഇന്ന് ഓരോ മനുഷ്യനും. അവന്ന് സ്വന്തം സ്വത്വം പൂര്‍ണമായും വായിച്ചെടുക്കാനാവില്ല. എന്നാല്‍ ഞാന്‍ ആരാണ്? എന്റെ നിയോഗമെന്താണ്? തുടങ്ങിയ യുഗാന്തരങ്ങളായി മനുഷ്യന്‍ ഉയര്‍ത്തിപ്പോരുന്ന മൌലികമായ ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ഉത്തരം നല്‍കാനുള്ള അപ്രാപ്തിയാണ് ഇത്തരമൊരു അവസ്ഥയില്‍ അവനെ എത്തിക്കുന്നത്. അതിനാല്‍ അത്തരമൊരു ഏകാന്തതയുടെ ആക്രമണത്തിനു വിധേയമാവുന്നത് അല്ലാഹുവിനെ നിഷേധിക്കുകയോ സംശയിക്കുകയോ അവനുമായി തന്റെ ആത്മാവുണ്ടാക്കിയ കരാറിനെ അവമതിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യുന്നവര്‍ മാത്രമാണ്. കാരണം പ്രസ്തുത കരാര്‍ സംബന്ധിച്ച തിരിച്ചറിവാണ് ഉണ്മയുടെയും അസ്തിത്വത്തിന്റെയും കാര്യത്തില്‍ മനുഷ്യന് അവന്റെ സ്വത്വം നിര്‍ണയിച്ചുകൊടുക്കുന്നത്. അല്ലാഹുവുമായി ചെയ്ത കരാര്‍ തന്റെ സ്വത്വത്തില്‍ ദൃഢീകരിക്കുന്ന മുസ്ലിം ഒരിക്കലും ഏകാകിയല്ല. ധ്യാനസന്ദര്‍ഭത്തില്‍ പോലും സഹജാവബോധത്തിലൂടെയും ആന്തരിക ജ്ഞാനത്തിലൂടെയും തന്റെ സ്വത്വം അതിന്റെ സ്രഷ്ടാവും പരിപാലകനുമായ അല്ലാഹുവിനോട് എത്രമാത്രം അടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നുവെന്ന് അവന്‍ തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നുണ്ട്. മുസ്ലിം സദാ അല്ലാഹുവിനെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള സ്മരണയിലും അവനുമായുള്ള ആത്മഭാഷണത്തിലുമാണ്. അതിനാലവന്‍ തന്റെ സ്വത്വവും നിയോഗവും കൃത്യമായി തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നുണ്ട്. അതുകൊണ്ട് അവന്‍ തന്റെ സ്വത്വത്തില്‍തന്നെ സുരക്ഷിതനും കടുത്ത ഏകാന്തതയുടെ ഭീതിപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന പ്രതിധ്വനികളില്‍ നിന്നും മൂകഭയത്തിന്റെ പിടുത്തത്തില്‍ നിന്നും മോചിതനുമാണ്. ഇസ്ലാമിന്റെ ഉറവിടവും ഇസ്ലാമിക പ്രപഞ്ചവീക്ഷണത്തിന്റെ ആവിഷ്കാര കേന്ദ്രവുമായ ഖുര്‍ആന്‍ ഉണ്മയുടെ പരിപൂര്‍ണതയുടെയും തീര്‍പ്പിന്റെയും പ്രകാശനമാണ്. ഇസ്ലാമാണ് ഉണ്മയുടെ പ്രാതിഭാസികമായ ദൃഢീകരണം എന്ന പോലെ ആ പരിശുദ്ധഖുര്‍ആന്‍ മനുഷ്യരാശിക്കു പകര്‍ന്നു നല്‍കിയ പ്രവാചകതിരുമേനി(സ) മനുഷ്യാസ്തിത്വത്തിന്റെ പരിപൂര്‍ണതയെ പ്രതിനിധാനം ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.

മാനവരാശിയിലേക്കുള്ള അല്ലാഹുവിന്റെ അന്തിമ ദൂതര്‍ നമ്മെ ഇരുട്ടില്‍ നിന്ന് വെളിച്ചത്തിലേക്കു നയിക്കുന്നവരും സ്വയം പ്രകാശം പരത്തുന്ന ഒരു വിളക്കും സകല സൃഷ്ടിജാലങ്ങള്‍ക്കുമുള്ള അല്ലാഹുവിന്റെ കാരുണ്യവുമാണ്. മാനവരാശിക്കാകമാനം മാതൃകയായി അല്ലാഹു സൃഷ്ടിച്ച അത്യുദാത്ത വ്യക്തിത്വം. അഥവാ ലോകത്തിന്നാകമാനം ഉത്തമമാതൃകയായ പൂര്‍ണമനുഷ്യന്‍. അല്ലാഹുവും അവന്റെ മലക്കുകളും പോലും അവിടുത്തെ ആദരിച്ചനുഗ്രഹിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. അല്ലാഹുവിന്റെ ആജ്ഞയും മലക്കുകളുടെ മാതൃകയുമനുസരിച്ച് എക്കാലത്തെയും സത്യവിശ്വാസികളും അവിടുത്തെ ആദരിച്ചുപോന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതിനിയും അപ്രകാരം തന്നെ തുടരുകയും ചെയ്യും. പരലോകത്ത് അല്ലാഹു സ്തുത്യര്‍ഹമായ സ്ഥാനം കനിഞ്ഞു നല്‍കുന്നതും അവിടുത്തേക്കു മാത്രമാണ്. മുഹമ്മദ്(സ)യുടെ നാമം തന്നെ സാക്ഷാത്കാരത്തിന്റെ അത്ഭുതമാണ്. കാരണം വഫാത്തിനു ശേഷവും ലോകത്താകമാനം യുഗങ്ങളുടെയോ തലമുറകളുടെയോ വ്യത്യാസമില്ലാതെ സ്തുതിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത് അവിടുന്ന് മാത്രമാണ്. അവിടുത്തെ പൂര്‍വതലമുറകളെ പരിശോധിച്ചാലും ഇത്തരത്തില്‍ വാഴ്ത്തപ്പെട്ട ഒരാളെ കണ്ടെത്താനാവില്ല. ഇരുട്ടില്‍ നിന്നു വെളിച്ചത്തിലേക്ക് നയിച്ചതിലുള്ള നന്ദിയും ആദരവും ആത്മാര്‍ഥമായ സ്നേഹവും കാരണമാണ് നാം അവിടുത്തെ സദാ വാഴ്ത്തുന്നത്. നമ്മുടെ ആത്മാവിനെക്കാളധികം പ്രാവചകതിരുമേനിയെ നാം സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. കാലത്തിനോ മറവിക്കോ മങ്ങലേല്‍പിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാത്തവിധം ശക്തമാണ് അവിടുത്തോട് നമുക്കുള്ള സ്നേഹവും ആദരവും. ഓരോ യുഗങ്ങളിലും തലമുറകളിലും അവിടുന്ന് നമ്മോടൊപ്പമുണ്ട്. അല്ല, അവിടുന്ന് നമ്മുടെ സ്വത്വത്തേക്കാള്‍ നമ്മോടടുത്താണ്. അവിടുത്തെ വാക്കുകളെയും കര്‍മങ്ങളെയും മൌനസമ്മതങ്ങളെയും നാം കൃത്യമായി അനുകരിക്കുന്നു. അപ്രകാരം ഖുര്‍ആന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ അവിടുന്നാണ് നമ്മുടെ ഉദാത്തമാതൃകയും വഴികാട്ടിയും. പ്രായലിംഗഭേദമെന്യേ സകല മുസ്ലിംകള്‍ക്കും മാതൃകയായി അവിടുന്ന് ഉള്ളതിനാല്‍ ഒരൊറ്റ മുസ്ലിമും സ്വത്വപ്രതിസന്ധിയോ പാശ്ചാത്യരെപ്പോലെ ജനറേഷന്‍ഗ്യാപിന്റെ പ്രശ്നമോ അഭിമുഖീകരിക്കുന്നില്ല. പാശ്ചാത്യ സമൂഹം ഒരിക്കലും ഉണ്മയുടെ തലത്തിലേക്കെത്താനാവാതെ നിരന്തര മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് വിധേയമായിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കയാണ്. അവന്റെ ഉണ്മ തന്നെ കേവലം 'ആയിത്തീരല്‍' ആയി മാറിയിരിക്കുന്നു. സുസ്ഥാപിതമായ ഒരു ഏകയാഥാര്‍ഥ്യത്തെ സ്വന്തം ദാര്‍ശനിക ഭൂമികയായി പടിഞ്ഞാറ് അംഗീകരിക്കുന്നില്ല. വാക്കുകള്‍കൊണ്ടും കര്‍മങ്ങള്‍കൊണ്ടും മനുഷ്യജീവിതത്തിന്റെ സകലതലങ്ങള്‍ക്കും മാതൃകയും പ്രചോദനവുമായി മനുഷ്യനായ ഒരു മാര്‍ഗദര്‍ശിയെയും അവരംഗീകരിക്കുന്നില്ല. അവരെ സംബന്ധിച്ചിടത്തോളം സ്വന്തം അസ്തിത്വവും ലക്ഷ്യവും നിയോഗവുമെല്ലാം ഓരോരുത്തരും അന്വേഷിച്ചു കണ്ടെത്തേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. അസ്തിത്വത്തിന്റെ ഭൌതികവും പദാര്‍ഥപരവും മതേതരവുമായ യാഥാര്‍ഥ്യങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നു മാത്രമാണ് പാശ്ചാത്യന്റെ മൂല്യങ്ങള്‍ പരുവപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. അതിനാല്‍ പാശ്ചാത്യസമൂഹം യുവാക്കള്‍, മധ്യവയസ്കര്‍, വൃദ്ധര്‍ എന്നിങ്ങനെ മൂന്നു തലമുറകള്‍ തമ്മിലുള്ള വിടവുകളാല്‍ വിഘടിതമായിരിക്കുന്നു. ഞാന്‍ ആരാണ്? എന്റെ ജീവിതലക്ഷ്യമെന്താണ്? തുടങ്ങിയ മൌലികമായ ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് അവരവരുടേതായ പരിധിയിലൊതുങ്ങിക്കൊണ്ട് ഉത്തരം കണ്ടെത്തുകയും അതുവഴി സ്വന്തം അസ്തിത്വത്തിന്റെയും ജീവിതത്തിന്റെയും അര്‍ഥം സ്വയം നിര്‍ണയിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യാനുള്ള ശ്രമങ്ങളിലാണ് ഓരോ തലമുറയും വ്യാപൃതമായിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഇസ്ലാമിക സമൂഹം ഒരിക്കലും അത്തരമൊരു പ്രതിസന്ധിയിലകപ്പെടുന്നില്ല. അവിടെ വിഭിന്ന തലമുറക്കാരായ ഓരോ വിഭാഗവും ആദ്യമേ തന്നെ സ്വന്തം അസ്തിത്വം നിര്‍വചിക്കുകയും നിയോഗം തിരിച്ചറിയുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. സ്വത്വം തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നത് അല്ലാഹുവുമായുണ്ടാക്കിയ ഉടമ്പടി തിരിച്ചറിയുകയും അംഗീകരിക്കുകയും സ്ഥിരീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതിലൂടെയാണെങ്കില്‍ നിയോഗം തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നത് അല്ലാഹുവിന്റെ ഇച്ഛയ്ക്ക് പൂര്‍ണമായും കീഴൊതുങ്ങുകയും അവന്റെ നിയമങ്ങളനുസരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുക വഴി ആ കരാറിനെ സാക്ഷാത്കരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ്.

പരിശുദ്ധ ഖുര്‍ആന്‍ അല്ലാഹുവില്‍ നിന്നും തനിക്കവതീര്‍ണമായ അതേ രൂപത്തില്‍ നമ്മിലേക്കെത്തിക്കുകയും അതുവഴി സ്വന്തം അസ്തിത്വത്തെയും ജീവിതലക്ഷ്യത്തെയും കുറിച്ചുള്ള ജ്ഞാനം നമുക്ക് പകരുകയും ചെയ്തത് പ്രവാചകതിരുമേനി(സ)യാണ്. അവിടുത്തെ ജീവിതം ഖുര്‍ആന്റെ പരിപൂര്‍ണവും ഉദാത്തവുമായ വ്യാഖ്യാനമാണ്. അതിനാല്‍ ആ തിരുജീവിതം മാത്രമാണ് നമുക്ക് മാര്‍ഗദര്‍ശകവും പ്രചോദകവുമായിട്ടുള്ളത്. അതാവട്ടെ പരിപൂര്‍ണവും കാലാതീതവുമാണു താനും. പരിപൂര്‍ണ മാതൃക എന്ന് ഒരാളെക്കുറിച്ചു പറയുമ്പോള്‍ അത് അന്വര്‍ഥമാവണമെങ്കില്‍ മനുഷ്യജീവിതത്തിന് മാര്‍ഗദര്‍ശനം നല്‍കാന്‍ അത്യന്താപേക്ഷിതമായ ശാശ്വത മാനവിക ആത്മീയമൂല്യങ്ങളുടെയെല്ലാം മൂര്‍ത്തരൂപമായിരിക്കണം അയാള്‍. സ്വന്തം ജീവിതകാലത്ത് മാത്രമല്ല, ഭൂമുഖത്ത് മനുഷ്യനുണ്ടാകുന്നു. കാലമത്രയും അവര്‍ക്ക് വെളിച്ചമേകാന്‍ പര്യാപ്തമായിരിക്കണം അയാളിലുള്ള മൂല്യങ്ങള്‍. അത്തരമൊരു മാതൃകയായി മുഹമ്മദ്നബി(സ) യെയല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊരാളെ കണ്ടെത്താനാവില്ല. മുസ്ലിംകളുടെ ഓരോ തലമുറയും അവിടുത്തെ ജീവിതമാതൃക സ്വന്തം ജീവിതത്തിലൂടെ അടുത്ത തലമുറക്ക് പകരുന്നതിനാല്‍ തലമുറകളുടെ വിടവ് എന്നൊരു പ്രതിസന്ധിയേ മുസ്ലിംകള്‍ അനുഭവിക്കുന്നില്ല. മറിച്ച് വിശുദ്ധ പ്രവാചകന്റെ ഉദാത്ത മാതൃക സ്വന്തം ജീവിതത്തിലാവിഷ്കരിക്കുക വഴി ഓരോ തലമുറയും വരും തലമുറക്ക് വെളിച്ചം പകരുകയാണ് ചെയ്യുന്നത്.

സത്യത്തില്‍ എനിക്കും അത്ഭുദമായി... പരീക്ഷക് പേരും മറ്റും പൂരിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാതെ എന്നോട് സഹായം ചോദിച്ച എന്റെ കൂടുകാരന്റെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ നില കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍. എല്ലാ പരീക്ഷക്കും ചോദ്യപേപ്പര്‍ അതെ പടി പകര്‍ത്തുകയാണ് മൂപ്പരുടെ പരിപാടി. ഞാനും വിചാരിച്ചു ഇത് അവന്‍ തന്നെയാണോ?. അവന്റെ അ പഴയ വീടിന്റെ സ്ഥാനത് പുതിയ ഇരുനില കെട്ടിടം. മുറ്റത്ത്‌ കാര്‍. ആകെ മാറിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അവന്റെ അടുത്ത കൂടുകരോട് ചോതിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ ചെറിയ അസൂയയോടുകുടെ അവര്‍ പറഞ്ഞത് അവന്റെ തലവര നേരായി എന്നാണ്. പത്താം ക്ലാസ്സ്‌ തോറ്റ് കുറെ തെണ്ടിതിരിങ്ങു. പിന്നെ ഏതോ കുംബക്കാരന്‍ ഗള്‍ഫിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോയി. ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഒരു അറബിയുടെ വിശ്വസ്തനായ ജോലിക്കാരാണ്. ഇദു അത്ഭുദം തന്നെയാണ്. മലയാളം തന്നെ ശരിക്ക് എഴുതാനും വായിക്കാനും അറിയാത്ത എന്റെ കൂടുകാരന്റെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ അവസ്ഥ കണ്ട് അത്ഭുതം തോനിയില്ലന്കിലല്ലേ അത്ഭുതമുള്. സത്യത്തില്‍ അവന്റെ അയല്‍വാസിക് ഭയങ്കര അസുയ ഉണ്ടന്ന് എനിക്ക് സംസാരതില്‍നിന്നു മനസ്സിലായി . മലയാളിയല്ലേ അത് അങ്ങനയെ വരൂ. കേരളത്തിലവിടയന്കിലും അര്കന്കിലും ലോട്ടറി അടിച്ചു എന്നറിഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഒന്നുംതോനരില്ലന്കിലും തന്റെ അടുത്ത വീടിലെ അര്കന്കിലും ലോട്ടറി അടിച്ചുന്നു കേട്ടാല്‍ പലര്‍ക്കും അസ്വസ്ഥത തോന്നാറുണ്ട്. അതൊക്കെ പോട്ടെ, ഇനി എന്റെ പഴയ കൂടുകാരന്‍ എന്നെ കണ്ടാല്‍ തിരിച്ചറിയുമോ? പത്താം ക്ലാസ്സ്‌ കഴിഞ്ഞതിനു ശേഷം ഞാന്‍ ഇതുവരെ അവനെ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല. എന്തായാലും എന്താ അവന്റെ ഒരു തലവര ......

Labbayk Allahhumma Labbayk (Here I am, O Allah, Here I am)

Imagine this scenario as you play it in your mind, this is not a scene from a movie but a true story that took place several centuries ago in the vast unending desert, under scorching heat, in a barren land with no inhabitants, no signs of civilization, cultivation or water. On the command of Allah, The great prophet who laid the foundation of Islamic Monotheism, Ibrahim (A.S) left his home with his wife Hajjar and his infant son Ismail (A.S) until he reached a lonely, dry, desolated barren valley between two small hills. He chose a spot for them next to a tree & left them with a bag containing dates and a water-skin containing water. He then started to leave, and so his wife followed him and said, "O Ibrahim! To whom are you leaving us in this barren valley that is not inhabited". She repeated the question several times and Ibrahim did not reply. Then she asked: "Has Allah commanded you to do this?". He said: "Yes". Then she said: "I am satisfied that Allah will never abandon us". Ibrahim (A.S) left, and when he was far away where they could not see him, he faced the direction of the House, raised his hand and supplicated,

"O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell in an uncultivable valley by Your Sacred House (the Ka'bah at Makkah); in order, O our Lord, that they may perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), so fill some hearts among men with love towards them, and (O Allah) provide them with fruits so that they may give thanks. (Surah Ibrahim 14: 37)

Ismail's mother then returned to her place after Ibrahim (A.S) left and started drinking water from the water-skin and nursing Ismail. When all the water was used up, she and her son became thirsty.When she could no longer see her son suffering in that state, she left. She found a mountain nearest to where she was, As-Safa, she climbed the mountain, keeping Ismail in her view while ascending the mountain with the hope of seeing somebody or source of water. When she came down to the valley, she raised her garment and ran, just as a tired person runs, until she reached another mountain, Al-Marwah. In vain, she looked to see if there was someone there. She ran to and fro between the mountains seven times. Ibn Abbas said that the Messanger of Allah (S.A.W) said, "This is why the people make the trip between As-Safa and Al-Marwah (during Hajj and Umrah)."

It is important and obligatory, also a Sunnah as we perform the rite of "Sai", to imagine the hardship, the urgency, the piety and the blind Takhwaa of our mother as she ran thirsty in the scorching hot desert valley, ascending and descending the rough, hard mountainous track searching for water for her son, not once but 7 times back and forth the rough terrain. The distance between Safa and Marwah is approximately 450 yards and the 7 trips amount to a rough 2 miles. Subhan-Allah! we cannot come even close to enacting this experience as we walk through this "arkaan" of "Sai", with several fans in the gallery blowing cool air on the Hujjaj and the smooth marble flooring touching the feet, making this act a breeze with no sweat, just comfort!

When mother Hajjar returned to where Ismail was, she heard a voice and saw Angel Gabriel. She said: "I have heard you. Do you have relief". Angel Gabriel hit his heel ( his wing) on the spot where Zam Zam now exists, underneath the feet of Ismail (A.S), and water gushed out. Hajjar on seeing the water and afraid that it may flow away started digging with her hand to contain the water so she can transfer it to the water-skin. Ibn Abbas said that the prophet (S.A.W) said, "May Allah grant His mercy to the mother of Ismail, had she left the water, (flow naturally without her intervention), it would have been flowing on the surface of the earth." The water of ZamZam is a reminder of Allah's blessings and insha-Allah it will never dry up. Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W) said: "The water of ZamZam is for whatever it is drunk for".

Ismail's mother started drinking the water and could nurse her child. Then Angel Gabriel said to her, "Do not fear abandonment. There shall be a House for Allah built here by this boy and his father. Allah does not abandon His people".

Afterward some people from the tribe of "Jurham" passed through this valley and were astonished to see birds. They knew that birds can be found at a place where there is water. They had crossed the valley before and had not noticed any water in it. They sent some people to search the area, they returned with the news of water. They all went to the mother of Ismail and asked her if she would allow them to dwell on the land. She agreed but told them that they would not have any exclusive rights over the water. They agreed and stayed there and sent for their relatives to join them. Ismail (A.S) learnt Arabic from them and later Hajjar died. But the sacrifice, the hardship ant the patience bore by our mother and her Takhwah and obedience to Allah is still remembered with reverence to this day and will be till the end of time. It is enacted and retraced in the Rite or arkaan called "Sai" during Hajj and Umrah by millions of pilgrims. The lesson of obedience, trust, sacrifice and complete unquestionable submission to Allah only to please HIM, whether it was to leave his son and wife in a barren valley or the willingness to sacrifice his son on Allah's command was taught to us by Ibrahim (A.S).
Later when Allah commanded, Ibrahim returned to Makka and asked Ismael to help him build Kabah. He pointed Ismail to an area above ground level. So both of them started to raise the foundations of the House. Ibrahim started building the Kabah while Ismail continued handing him the stones. Both of them kept saying:

"Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us. Verily! You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower." (Surah Al-Baqara 2:127)

"Our Lord! And make us submissive unto You and of our offspring a nation submissive unto You, and show us our Manasik (all the ceremonies of pilgrimage - Hajj and 'Umrah), and accept our repentance. Truly, You are the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful. (Surah Al-Baqara 2:128)

"Our Lord! Send amongst them a Messenger of their own who shall recite unto them Your Verses and instruct them in the Book (this Qur'an) and Al-Hikmah, and purify them. Verily! You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise." (Surah Al Baqara 2:129)

The Messenger of Allah was written as the Final Prophet when Adam was still clay. Yet, Ibrahim (A.S) supplicated and Allah accepted Ibrahim's supplication, although HE had full knowledge beforehand that it will occur by HIS decree. This reminds with the Hadith about what the Messenger of Allah said when he was asked, "O Messanger of Allah! Tell us about how your prophethood started." He said:
"I am the supplication of my father Ibrahim, the good news of Jesus, the son of Mary, and my mother saw a light that radiated from her which illuminated the castles of Ash-Sham (Syria)".

Prophet Ibrahim was ordered to build Kabah to worship and to call people to do the same. Ibrahim (A.S) pleaded, "O Allah! How shall my voice reach all of those people?". Allah Subhannahu Ta'aala told him that his duty was only to give the call and it was up to Allah to make it reach he people. Ibrahim (A.S) then climbed Mount Arafat and called out in his loudest voice, "O People! Verily Allah has prescribed upon you Hajj, so perform Hajj."

Allah revealed in the Quran:
And proclaim to mankind the Hajj (pilgrimage). They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, they will come from every deep and distant (wide) mountain highway (to perform Hajj). ( Suarh Al-Hajj 22: 27)

SubhanAllah, true to Allah's words even to this day, millions of Muslims from distant and far away lands representing one faith yet different regions, races, class and culture visit the House of Allah, in answer to the original call of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S) and Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W). Millions every year chant almost in unison their heart, mind & soul elevated through the beautiful glorifying words of "Talbiyah" that our beloved Prophet (S.A.W) taught us as they go about performing the "Manaasik" of Hajj:

"Labbayk Allahumma Labbaik, (Here I am at your Service, O Allah, Here I am)
Labbayk La Sharika Laka Labbayk, (Here I am, You have no partner, Here I am)
Innal Hamda Wan Ne'mata Laka Wal Mulk ( Verily all praise & blessings are Yours & all Sovereignty)
La Sharika Lak", (You have no partner)

Allah's door of Mercy and forgiveness is always open for HIS believers who call upon HIM with complete faith, repentance and hope in HIM. HIS Mercy is all encompassing. HE is the Most Compassionate and the Most Merciful. We are children of Adam (A.S) and it is innate in our nature to sin. Allah is cognizant of this weakness, since HE is our Creator "Khaaliq". HE repeatedly gives us a chance to cleanse ourselves from our sins. "Hajj", one of the pillars of Islam is like a conduit, to ask Allah for HIS favors and forgiveness. Insha-Allah, May Allah bless all the Muslim Ummah to visit the First house of Allah Subhanahu Taala and may their Hajj be accepted (Mabroor). Indeed, as our beloved Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W) said: "And there is no reward for an accepted Hajj except Jannah!".

The Mosque of Rome

The Islamic Cultural Center and Mosque of Rome is one of the largest mosques in Europe and can accommodate 12,000 people which is important since many Muslims have relocated to Rome over the past few decades. It's the only mosque in the very Catholic Rome, and it is quite exquisite. In addition to being a place of worship, it is also a location that offers cultural and social activities such as wedding ceremonies, funeral services, conventions and other events. Plus, this mosque and Islamic Cultural Center has become a place that connects Shia and Sunni Muslims. It is a very important and prominent structure for Muslims throughout Europe.

Historical Significance

The Mosque was established by the then exiled Prince Muhammad Hasan of Afghanistan and his wife, Princess Razia Begum,. It was financed by Faisal of Saudi Arabia and designed by Paolo Portoghesi, Vittorio Gigliotti and Sami Mousawi. The construction of the Mosque took more than a decade to complete and more than 20 years, from the time the land was acquired. In fact, the land was donated by the Roman City Council in 1974 but no construction began until 1984. It was first opened on June 21, 1995.

Since its opening, the Mosque has been at the center of much news coverage, appearing in a great number of international publications. In one particular article about the Mosque, James Steele wrote that Italian architect Portoghesi felt there was no better symbol than the tree with which to express the diversity inherent in the unity of Islam, which is why he implemented the palm tree-like columns into the Mosque's design. "The roots, trunk, branches and leaves of the tree, like the various countries in which Islam prevails, are all different, and yet work together as a complete organism." The Mosque is a wonderful combination of Roman and traditional Islamic elements, conveying the heart of Islam in a beautiful way.

Ramadan - An opportunity to know your inner self

Fasting (Sawm) carries a two-fold meaning - two seemingly opposing definitions combined into a single word. And sawm, as described in the Qur'an and the hadith, simultaneously fulfills both of these definitions. The primary meaning is to hold back, to refrain from, to abstain - the further meaning is to rise beyond, to move past former limits.

The month of Ramadan is a time in which we hold our bodily compulsions and instincts under strict control, together with our thoughts and our mental states, our moods and desires. We submit ourselves (our nafs) and our accustomed patterns of life to a higher template, one that fosters a regimen of self-restraint within the body and mind and correspondingly seeks an intensification of the life of the spirit. The body is ordered to fast from what it needs, from what is normally allowed to it, from what it desires, from what it craves, from what it may seek on a whim, and from what it habitually seeks - from all that leads to an intensification of the activities of the nafs.

During the interval of daylight, halal (the allowed) transforms into haram (the forbidden) and whatever nourishes the physical body becomes haram. As for the nafs, it undertakes a psychic fast from anger, backbiting, gossip, harshness towards others, from reaching in any manner through any of the senses towards that which is disallowed. All those inclinations which strengthen the nafs, which allow it to inject itself with vigor and attachment into the flux of worldly life are proscribed and denied expression.

The nafs continuously asserts itself through it's ties with the body and according to a complex and ever-shifting world of attraction and desire, knowledge and ignorance that endlessly churns within it. Through its movements and motions, it seeks what it needs and wants and can become, depending on circumstances, complacent or cavalier, disdainful or self-assured, arrogant or fearful, callous or ambitious, lethargic or craving - endlessly acting and reacting within the confines of its limited knowledge. What it does not know it is ignorant of, and what it does not know is infinitely more vast in extent than what it knows. So it's knowledge is forever outweighed by it's ignorance and it's pursuits and actions are indicators of which of these (knowledge or ignorance) it acts upon.

The nafs is in continuous restless motion, but it is a motion that circumambulates around a center of manifold physical and chemical interactions that give rise to need, wants, pleasures, habits, moods, impulsions, compulsions, and desires. The complex system of body and mind are in an incessant state of movement (that ceases only with death), switching continually from one mode to the other, pouring forth a torrent of thoughts and internal impulses that turn the mind's focus endlessly from one locus to another. There is perpetual movement and motion but within tightly constrained boundaries - pivoting around the locus of the nafs and what it seeks.

And so the qur'anic command is issued - "...fast until the night...." (Qur'an 2:187) Fast from what the nafs needs and desires. Let the nafs know that there is a truer aspect of yourself, a center capable of overseeing and stabilizing all the intersecting mental systems of the mind and all the material/chemical/habitual/hormonal systems of the body. Proclaim to it that there is a guardian and owner and ruler over the nafs and over the physical form with which it is integrally co-mingled. Let it know that the form and the stirrings of need and desire within the nafs have to submit to this guardian in seeking their satisfaction. The wants, needs, and desires that spring from the material form must submit to the governance and tutelage of a higher form - to the spiritual form indicated by the hadith that states: "God created Adam in His own form...." (hadith)

This is not the material form driven by chemical interactions but the spiritual substance which is the subtle, essential form of a human being - one that is masked by the ceaseless activity of an unconstrained nafs (nafs al-amarra).

The material form and its impulses (manifested through the nafs) are reigned in during fasting. All the things which give strength, vigor, and life to the body and nafs are terminated - the attachment is reduced, denuded, weakened. We cease to consume and are no longer able to enjoy what feeds our physical form and with that cessation we begin to unhook the clamps which bind us to the most basic goods of this world. We undo the shackles which tie us through our physicality to the world. By penetrating to the very root of our attachment, to the most fundamental layer, to the very seat of our creaturely connection to the world - food, water, sex (the three cardinal symbols of life) we overturn their dominion and arrive at a position where we, for a time, subdue them.

We deny creaturely externals, we let the creaturely demands and impulses remain unanswered - over the course of the days of fasting we let them subside and wane. We let them grow silent so we have a chance to hear what we otherwise would not hear, to perceive what we otherwise could not perceive. We subdue our physical form and when its clamoring grows silent we perhaps become aware of a spiritual form that resides subtly within us.

The vigil of denial and regulation of the physical form and the nafs is maintained until the spirit and mind's ascendancy becomes clear. "Fast until the night...." (Qur'an 2:187) The night approaches and the day's fast ends with the former hierarchy reversed - what was first (physically and psychically generated needs, wants, and desires) comes last and what was last comes first, and with this new ordering of spirit and body in place, the fast is completed. Over the course of the month of Ramadan, as the days merge into the nights, this drama of reversal is repeated and intensified till the person fasting (the person who undertakes the fast with complete sincerity and profound intensity) approaches a state of spiritual readiness.

Until in the watch (the vigil) of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan, there arrives the possibility of a profound inner remaking, an unfolding of the potential to witness the laylatul qadr. "And what can convey to you what laylatul qadr is? That night is better than a thousand months...." (Qur'an 97:2-3) During the day we break ourselves down, we fast from what sustains our existence - we submit our clay form to be unmade, to be kneaded and worked over - we remove ourselves from our material subsistence and turn to prayer and spiritual subsistence from God - we prepare ourselves to be reshaped. The onset of the darkness of night is representative of pure potential waiting to emerge into existence - waiting for the command and decree which will give it form. "The angels and the spirit (ruh) descend in it, by the command of their Lord with every decree...." (Qur'an 97:4) We turn ourselves into malleable clay awating the shaping command of that night - anticipating the profound and weighty descents that accompany laylatul qadr. "(That night is) Peace till the breaking of the dawn." (Qur'an 97:5)

So sawm (fasting) fulfills its meanings - to hold back from, to abstain, pertains to the restraint engendered through the fast - to rise beyond pertains to the results that God bestows upon those who seek the fast with sincerity and knowledge. So the fast is at once a holding back and a lifting up. The body and it's appetites are held back and through this holding back an elusive and subtle but profound awakening begins. We are provided the means by which to alter our reality, to shape what we ourselves are. By holding back the nafs from its activity and its sustenance, moments of stillness, of silence, are obtained - moments in which self-perception sharpens and deepens and spirit awakens and the (spiritual) form with which God created man begins to unfold itself. "And in yourselves - what do you not see?" (Qur'an 51:21)

India unveils prototype of $35 tablet computer

If the government can find a manufacturer, the Linux operating system-based computer would be the latest in a string of "world's cheapest" innovations to hit the market out of India, which is home to the 100,000 rupee ($2,127) compact Nano car, the 749 rupees ($16) water purifier and the $2,000 open-heart surgery.

The tablet can be used for functions like word processing, web browsing and video-conferencing. It has a solar power option too — important for India's energy-starved hinterlands — though that add-on costs extra.

"This is our answer to MIT's $100 computer," human resource development minister Kapil Sibal told the Economic Times when he unveiled the device Thursday.
In 2005, Nicholas Negroponte — co-founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab — unveiled a prototype of a $100 laptop for children in the developing world. India rejected that as too expensive and embarked on a multiyear effort to develop a cheaper option of its own.
Negroponte's laptop ended up costing about $200, but in May his nonprofit association, One Laptop Per Child, said it plans to launch a basic tablet computer for $99.
Sibal turned to students and professors at India's elite technical universities to develop the $35 tablet after receiving a "lukewarm" response from private sector players. He hopes to get the cost down to $10 eventually.
Mamta Varma, a ministry spokeswoman, said falling hardware costs and intelligent design make the price tag plausible. The tablet doesn't have a hard disk, but instead uses a memory card, much like a mobile phone. The tablet design cuts hardware costs, and the use of open-source software also adds to savings, she said.
Varma said several global manufacturers, including at least one from Taiwan, have shown interest in making the low-cost device, but no manufacturing or distribution deals have been finalized. She declined to name any of the companies.
India plans to subsidize the cost of the tablet for its students, bringing the purchase price down to around $20.
"Depending on the quality of material they are using, certainly it's plausible," said Sarah Rotman Epps, an analyst at Forrester Research. "The question is, is it good enough for students?"
Profitability is also a question for the $35 machine.
Epps said government subsidies or dual marketing — where higher-priced sales in the developed world are used to subside low-cost sales in markets like India — could convince a manufacturer to come on board.
This and similar efforts â€” like the Kakai Kno and the Entourage Edge tablets â€” show that there is global demand for an affordable device to trim high textbook costs, she said.
If it works, Epps predicts the device could send a shiver of cost-consciousness through the industry.
"It puts pressure on all device manufacturers to keep costs down and innovate," she said.
The project is part of an ambitious education technology initiative by the Indian government, which also aims to bring broadband connectivity to India's 25,000 colleges and 504 universities and make study materials available online.
So far nearly 8,500 colleges have been connected and nearly 500 web and video-based courses have been uploaded on YouTube and other portals, the Ministry said.

No Help from Washington

Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) officials in the government of Mohamed Abbas often complain they spend more time negotiating with American rather than Israeli governments. This has been particularly true of late. Since Israel's all-out assault on Gaza nearly a year and half ago, Palestinian officials have discontinued all direct talks with the Israelis and have been talking to the Americans. US presidential envoy George Mitchell has been closely engaged in the region since May 2010, but his efforts have not proved fruitful.

The Palestinians have had no more luck with the Americans than with the Israelis. They have been consistently asked to accept US-Israeli peace terms that spell disaster and capitulation. Apart from exhausting the Palestinians, and making them edge closer to further concessions, nothing of substance has emerged from talks with either the Americans or the Israelis.

The Americans have sold the Palestinians false hopes, giving Israel the time it needed to grab land and change the demographics of their state-to-be. Now, even the fig leaf of good intentions has fallen.

In a meeting between US President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu last Tuesday, the mercy bullet was finally fired, dealing a deadly blow to fantasies of American help.

Palestinian negotiators keep telling us that they have no other option but to negotiate with the Americans. This is not true. The Palestinian people don't want them to do so, and their fighting spirit is alive and well. When all other options run out, the people will come up with options of their own. It is what people living under foreign occupation have always done, and the Palestinians are no exception.

President Abbas used to tell us that the ball is in Israel's court. Now Obama has kicked it back into the Palestinian court. Once again, the White House has made it clear that the ball, the court, the referee, and the players should all perform according to American dictates.

The peace process has been at best a US- Israeli PR exercise, at worst a political ruse designed to help the Zionists and undermine the Arabs. The whole aim of the peace process has been to create a fifth column in our midst. At heart, the peace process had no bearing on peace. Fairness was never part of the equation.

It is time the Arabs, especially Palestinian Arabs, called it a day. It is time the admission was made that the peace process has done nothing at all for the peace, security, and development of this region.

Obama was pleased to see Netanyahu, just as George Bush was once thrilled to confer with Ariel Sharon. The words the two presidents used in describing the Israeli dignitaries were almost identical. Sharon was called a "man of peace". Now Netanyahu seems to be inheriting the title, no matter that a few days earlier he ordered the massacre of peace activists on the Gaza-bound flotilla, no matter that on the same day Obama welcomed him, the Israeli group B'Tselem issued a damning report on the expansion of settlements in the West Bank.

Obama had nothing but praise for the Israeli prime minister. There are no differences between Israel and the US, Obama declared, describing his talks with Netanyahu as "excellent" and his country's ties with Israel as "extraordinary". Washington is as committed to Israel's security as it always was, and the "special ties" as binding as ever, he told US reporters.

For his part, Netanyahu said reports about a schism in US-Israeli relations were just rumours.

To reward Netanyahu for what he described as "progress" toward peace, Obama accepted an invitation to visit Israel.

Does any of this surprise President Mahmoud Abbas?

The only harsh words the American president used were in reference to the Palestinians, whom he advised to stop provoking and embarrassing the Israelis. The Palestinians should stop thinking of "excuses" to tarry on peace and start talking to the Israelis. Any conditions Obama once made on direct talks seem to have been forgotten. The current US position is that the Palestinians should start talks without preconditions.

This is not what President Abbas was hoping to hear. Instead of encouragement, the Palestinians have been admonished and told to behave.

A close associate of President Abbas told Al-Quds Al-Arabi that "all signs suggest that the US administration would press the Palestinian Authority to hold direct talks" without guarantees or preconditions. This is basically what Mitchell has been trying to do throughout his earlier visits to the region.

Now Abbas has to choose. Either he gives way to the Americans, which is what he's done since Annapolis in 2007, or he gives up on the Americans. In the first case, he would lose any remaining credibility. In the second, he will have to step down. He has gambled everything on negotiations, and now any hope of fruitful talks has evaporated.

The only option left to the Palestinians is resistance and more resistance. It is a course that is not only long and hard, but calls for national unity. The PLO made it into government as a result of resistance and national unity. Now the lack of unity and resistance threaten to banish the PLO into the wilderness, or turn it into a lackey of the occupation authorities.
