Sinkin'/ Risin' b/w Joanne
Magic SlEEEve Records

The Enthusiasts jump from English Power Pop into the Power Trio arena with there second single. While their first single might have been stylistically different they settle down nicely on this single. "Sinkin'/ Risin'" blends the 60's psychedelic and 70s blues metal leanings of Deep Purple and Ogden's Nut Flake-era The Small Faces. Joey F. blends the guitar sounds of Ritchie Blackmore on the big riffs, while Dylan H. and Matt G. match him beat for beat. The shout style 70s metal chorus might sound out of place to some, but blends nicely with the song overall. "Joanne" takes their foot off the pedal and they rely and some laid back guitar and minimal vocal melodies. The song builds towards something during the last minute and showcases Joey F.'s guitar work. The Enthusiasts are progressing musically from something less primitive and engaging but are willing to keep the songs fun.
Hypnotized
Windian Records

Last spring Mondo Ray contributed a track to It Came from the Hideout- The Best of the Garage Punk Hideout Vol. 1 and impressed with Riverboat Gamblers-esque "Brush Your Tits". Raucous, melodic punk from Munich, Germany that proves Punk Rock is Nicht Tot! (Not dead).
A funny thing happened with the arrival of Hypnotized. Instead of frenetic melodic punk, the boys of Mondo Ray put out an even more melodic, new wave-ish power pop single. Falling somewhere between Gentlemen Jesse and His men and the Carbonas. "Hypnotized" is advertised as sugary sweet west coast power pop, but if Plimsouls doesn't run through your mind then you don't know your Power Pop. Mondo Ray's song clearly was inspired by the Plimsouls own "Hypnotized" but clearly this is more vibrant and the sum of it's musical inspiration. No dreamy jangly guitars here. The band back the single with the excellent post punk meets power pop "Nothing". The laid back vibe of the song, plucking rhythms, and catchy chorus is infectious.

Tony Cox follows up 2008’s Unpublished with the same formula for with a surprise or two. On the Way, Cox’s sophomore effort, draws on further inspiration from R&B and 70’s rock. Joining Cox again are Nigel Clark (vocals, keys, and bass) and Darren Finlan (drums). Their contribution on vocals and rhythm section provide continuity from Unpublished.

The fun, tongue in cheek "We'll Get High" incorporates some horns and falsetto back up vocals that give the song a 70s R&B feel in the vein of Paul Weller. "Dropped Me a Like a Stone" has similar elements but doesn't come together like "We'll Get High". "Hold Me Angeline" and "Alicia" use the classic British Invasion formula but Cox wisely shakes it up a little with the more contemporary "Alicia"."The Way", the title track, is reminiscent of The Dream Academy with more obvious nods to the Beach Boys. The vocal harmonies on the whole album are simply amazing. Each voice is unique and brings something extra to the song. Far too often artists throw in some additional vocals and it can sound out of place. "The Way" and "Feel the Ride" use vocal harmonies in different ways. The former uses layer after layer on the verse and chorus. The latter uses them for the most part on the verse. Either way Cox ably wielded this instrument in the studio only making this album better.

On The Way really has only one flaw, not enough songs. Cox's latest batch of songs find the right balance, but the nine tracks are over far too quickly. Cox, Clark and Finlan as a team have certainly come together and hit all the right notes. Let's just hope Tony and the boys don't make us wait so long the next time.

Gentlemen's Grip
Hozac Records

Imagine the Dwarves meets the Oblivians meets early Motorhead, with a "dose" of chaos. What the Oblivians did for Blues Punk, Puffy Areolas reimagines for Killed by Death post, punk hardcore garage scene. Hailing from Ohio, Puffy Areolas follow up In The Army 1981 with their debut on Hozac records-- Gentlemen's Grip. They might seem like your clingy younger brother, but they have some surprises.
The three songs (actually two) aren't all over the place but the single definitely rates as deranged mood music. A wall of noise best describes the title track. A hard charging riff provides the background. Teets and Chuck are the voice and sound of the band. Everything else about the song seems improvised and most likely would only be appreciated by the trained or interested ear. "Psychomania" take a more traiditional direction with metal riffs and garbled cookie monster vocals, with band seemingly entering the song when needed or an urge arises. However, the "outro" (third track) feels like a hard charged carnival theme song. Bringing to mind the Oblivians Play Nine Songs, it feels like the Areolas could have done a little more with the song.
This group is certainly not for the faint of heart. At times this might feel like noise, but realistically this falls more into the area of those who want to rediscover the noise that most called punk. Puffy Areolas might sound like the slightly smarter younger brother, but realistically they just paid attention and actually impress.
To the uninitiated, The Giraffes position in the rock universe is somewhere on the border between Bad Brains and System of a Down. Over the last 10 years they have moved from whiskey soaked surf balladeers to a live hard rock institution. Baptized and baptizing their fans at every show with a stiff middle finger anchored with a smile, replacing their witty vocals with cigarette warning labels, and lots of beer. The current lineup came to a conclusion on February 5, 2011. Ruled definitely sends the Lazar era out on the right note, however the bands legacy won’t be with this album.

A distortion fueled intro kicks off "The Border". Reminiscent of Bad Brains "Intro" from I Against I, Damien Paris lays back on every sound afforded to his guitar over the first minute. Andrew Totolos and Jen Carstensen provide a solid backbeat, before Totolos cymbal taps give way to Lazar's trademark vocals. The lyrics, both verse and chorus, quickly illustrate what a strong band The Giraffes have become during their decade long existence. Every Giraffe shouts the chorus, "We get what we want and what we want is what you got!" Starting off so promising seems to hurt the prospects for the album—but that wasn’t the case of the lead tracks on Prime Motivator or The Giraffes. The band revisits these same lyrics midway through the album on "The Invasion". Very different musically it hints at the often mentioned but never heard early years before Lazar joined and they were mainly an instrumental band. Perhaps this is a taste of “the future” without Lazar? “The Bed” and “The Store” could quickly be dismissed as better than average mid-90s grunge ballads that Alice In Chains churned out on their acoustic EP’s, but these songs are where Lazar really shines. The rest of the band plays to his great vocals. Lazar aptly moves between anger, frustration, and joy. Like Prime Motivator’s “Medicaid Benefit Applique” or any song off of A Gentlemen Never Tells, Lazar can carry a song just as well as the band carries him on “The City”, “Wage Earner”, or the epic “Man U.” ”The City” and “The War” are great songs that represent how much the band has solidified their sound on the last two albums. Paris’s guitar work is slick and easily shifts between tempos. Totolos, like Paris, has been there from the beginning and anchors the band. Sadly this is the only recording where Totolos and bassist Carstensen can show how tight they have become as the Giraffe’s rhythm section. “The Occupation” closes out the album. As a last song it succeeds and fails. Rolling along with the sound and feel of Prime Motivator's "Done", the tempo gets faster and faster as the song progresses much like the opening track, "The City". Five minutes into it Parrish, Drummer, and Carstensen all seemingly take their bows with the slow outro that makes Sun O))) look like early DRI. Perhaps the waning is supposed to illustrate the finality of Lazar's departure, but at times it is painful due to its length.

Ruled ultimately will satisfy all the Giraffes fans that bothered to support them, but their previous two albums are the heart and soul of the Giraffes. During those years The Giraffes ruled their criminally small universe. For those lucky enough to have witnessed one of the truly great live rock bands of the last 5 years—enjoy those memories and their back catalogue. . Paris, Totolos and Carstensen have a great base to rule again—but filling Lazar’s shoes might be more of a challenge. When Lazar arrived at the mic stand for his last performance he gave the crowd what they wanted, “If we don’t make it by the end of this show, I’m quitting”. Validating how great the music was, but at the same time acknowledging these Giraffes – Ruled! time simply ran out.

Copyright Rinjo Njori 2010

Copyright Rinjo Njori 2010

<itunes:explicit>yes</itunes:explicit><itunes:subtitle>Copyright Rinjo Njori 2010</itunes:subtitle><itunes:author>Rinjo</itunes:author><itunes:summary>Copyright Rinjo Njori 2010</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>Rinjo,Rinjo,Njori,Econo,Awesom</itunes:keywords>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://widget.tunecore.com/swf/tc_run_h_v2.swf?widget_id=69836</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

News of the World Closing!

Copyright Rinjo Njori 2010

The Horrors Indeed-- out with the Joy Division and in with the early 80s Synth Pop

Definitely in the same progressive vein of 100 Million Thousand. Kept streaming it all week and catch a little here and there. "Bicentennial Man" oozes 80s alternative rock. Then there is also the mis step of "Bone Marrow" which sound like a left over from the Almighty Defenders sessions. Purists worry not, "The Lie" is every bit the Black Lips. These Atlantians are growing on this yankee.
Copyright Rinjo Njori 2010

You had me at Born Annoying but you keep releasing music...

Helmet

Paige, did the break up with Winona hurt that much that you must sully the very good reputation of Helmet with likes of the whale song intro on Morphing? Didn't think so, so please rename any future Helmet projects Untitled Paige Hamilton Project. Thanks from a musically talentless music fan who is only armed with words.
P.S. The Beatles should sue you for that cover.
Copyright Rinjo Njori 2010

<media:rating>adult</media:rating>
Keepin' It Simple
