Our cats know when we need them the most.

One thing that people who don't have cats truly don't understand is that our cats know when we truly need them. They're no different than dogs in that way. They know us so well, our cats can sense when we are sad, when we're in pain, or when we're going through all kinds of changes. My cat, for the first 10 years of her life, was not a very cuddly one. She would sometimes cuddle with me at night or in the winter when she was cold, but without fail, whenever I cried, she was by my side. Because she knew, and she knows, and although sometimes she chooses to ignore my crying (which is a funny part of cat ownership too), she does know when I actually need her. That's true for all of them. Cats know when we need them the most.

If you haven't heard of medical alert cats before, it's because there are fewer of them, as opposed to medical alert dogs. It's possible to train cats, but it is much harder. Cats are very individual. They are not bred for the purpose of helping humans. It's rare to have a trained medical alert cat, even though it is possible, which probably explains why, when we asked you guys - our audience - to tell us stories about your medical alert cats, a good chunk of the stories that we got were of untrained cats who simply learned to recognize when their humans needed help. And they save lives this way. They know when we need them, they are worried about us, and they alert us that something is wrong - without ever needing to be taught to alert. To us, that is something uniquely amazing about cats.

I mean, sure, she will not leave me alone if I dare eat chicken and not share (to the point of her sending her tiny paws into my plate), but my friends with cats tell some very different stories:

My friend Marissa tells me that her cat, Biscuit, has developed a full-blown vendetta against her alarm clock. Every single morning, precisely three minutes before it goes off, Biscuit plants himself directly on Marissa's chest and stares at her face, unblinking, until she wakes up on her own. If she dares hit snooze, he responds by knocking her phone off the nightstand - not out of malice, she insists, but pure principle. "He's not trying to hurt it, he's making a statement". Apparently the statement is: "I decide when breakfast happens, not some beeping little box".
My friend Dev tells me that his cat, Olive, refuses to drink water from her actual bowl on philosophical grounds nobody in the house understands. Instead, she waits - patiently, dramatically - for someone to leave a glass unattended, then marches over and drinks from that instead, maintaining aggressive eye contact the entire time as if daring you to object. Dev's bought her fountains, fancy filtered bowls, even a whole ceramic dish shaped like a fish. Olive looked at each one, then walked directly past it to sip from his roommate's abandoned iced coffee. Some cats just enjoy chaos as a lifestyle.
My friend Kayla tells me that her cat, Theodore, has strong feelings about closed doors, namely that they shouldn't exist. If Kayla dares shut the bathroom door for even a second of privacy, Theodore parks himself directly outside and yowls like he's being personally betrayed by the architecture of the house. The moment the door opens, though? He saunters in slowly, sniffs the air once, and walks right back out, completely uninterested, as if to say the whole ordeal was never actually about getting in - it was about making sure Kayla knew who's really in charge here.

Would you take a trip across the world to visit an exceptionally friendly orange cat? We would.

I've never been to Australia, and I have very little desire to go there. Why? Because of the spiders. And the snakes. And because of every other crazy animal that wants to eat me for breakfast. But, there was one thing that could have convinced me to fly across many oceans to visit, and that was this friendly orange cat in Sydney. Someone added him as a "tourist attraction" to Google Maps, and he amassed a 4.9-star rating. One purrson rated him less than 5 stars, and whoever you are, you better watch out. We're telling Santa to put you on the naughty list.

He became a very popular spot and was loved by all the locals as well as the tourists who stopped by to give him some head scritches. But then… disaster happened. Overnight, he was removed from Google Maps, and his nearly purrfect rating was gone. Needless to say, the cat community was outraged. They threw their paws up in the air because they did care and demanded his return.

Our pleas were not heard, but all hope is not lost. There is strength in numbers, so if you all join our cause, we can hopefully get him reestablished as the local icon that he is. If anyone deserves it, he does, and with our power combined, he might just become Sydney's highest-rated attraction. The time is now!

The Cat Distribution System has never been very interested in waiting for the "right time."

This family thought they had everything planned out. They were moving next month, wanted to help their current cat settle into a new home before introducing a companion, and figured they'd start filling out adoption applications after the move. It made perfect sense. Then a tiny kitten came running down the highway and completely changed the plan.

The rescue wasn't exactly easy. The frightened little kitten darted through traffic while her future family chased after her in flip-flops, hoping they could reach her before another car did. By the time they finally scooped her up, she was scratched, filthy, and completely exhausted. Less than 20 minutes later, she was already at the vet getting the care she needed.

The veterinarian asked the question every rescuer dreams of hearing.

"Do you plan on keeping her?"

Looking at Styx now, it's hard to believe she's the same kitten. Cats always have an opinion, and they make sure you hear them out.

Cats are our babies. Just because they don't have our DNA doesn't mean that they are not. In practice, that is exactly what they are. They are their own little independent creatures with their own independent desires, and yet, we are the ones making the final calls. When my cat needed to be put on a diet, she was put on a diet, no matter how much she protested. When my cat spooks me into taking her to the vet, she can yell all she wants, but we're going. When my cat screams at the closed door of my bathroom when I'm showering… fine, I let her in. We, as pawrents, have to choose our battles.

They may be tiny, but our cats always have big opinions. Whether we agree with their opinions or not, one thing is for sure, and that is that our cats will let us know what they are. Loud and clear. And although most times, our cats really don't have the final say, sometimes, like the kitty in today's story, they do what they want anyway.

When this owner rehomed their cat, they did it with the best intentions. They were having trouble financially, and they thought that their cat would do better in a more stable home. They found the best replacement home they could, then they moved, and weeks of heartbreak and staring at cat pictures passed before they heard a meow in front of their new home. Mind you, the cat didn't know this new home, didn't know the way. Half an hour from his old home, and he found his previous owners anyway. And you know what? He knew better. It's never easy to see your cat grow old, but it's different when you never see them young and youthful either.

It takes a certain type of person to want to adopt a senior pet. There's mostly wear and tear, and you don't have their best years. But for some, they'd rather have those years then nothing at all. In this story, this guy met Momo back in January 2012. He was being fed daily as a stray cat at an apartment complex in Metro Detroit by a nice stranger. It was a harsh winter, with snow and winds, and the person feeding Momo wanted to give him a proper home. He started posting on Facebook groups urgently seeking a home for him because he was moving to Georgia in a week. So this guy sees the posts and offers to take him and get him fixed, and at least foster him until he has a real home. It turns out that Momo was already fixed, and had spent most of his life living outside. He was able to catch Momo and take him in as his own. He originally thought Momo had a cat dad, but it wasn't true.

He did the right thing and took Momo home in a large crate in the basement to keep him away from the other cats. He would go there and pet him, and it ended up being Momo's furrever home. Since Momo was already a senior cat, he really thought he was doing to lose him one summer when he started showing signs that he was quickly aging. But then suddenly, he pulled through and was the same Momo as he was before. In the last three months though, Momo has slowed down quite a bit and his owner is now reliving their time together. He knows that he made a risk when he took in a senior cat, but he also is so grateful for the time they've gotten together. It's not every day you meet a sweet cat who you can call your own. Like when you're sitting by the poolside on vacation with your family in Puerto Rico. They were minding their own business at the hotel, when this void kitten was hanging out next to them. She was really friendly towards them and was there for half an hour. The following evening, they went back and saw her again. They decided to call a local rescue, and the rescue told them that they'd drop off a carrier at the hotel so that the couple could take the kitten home. They caught the kitten themselves with a can of wet food and waited for someone from the rescue to take her. They got her to the vet and gave her everything she needed there. Then it was easy: just buy her a plane ticket back home! She's a year old now, and has a brother. Something really quirky about her is that her tail is freakishly long. I love a daring cat rescue story on any day of the week. Not all adopted cats get their heroic tale, but others, like Baby the cat, could probably tell with her purrs and meows about how she was rescued from raging dogs of a neighbor, chased into a rusty shed. I hate hearing about cats chased by dogs - like, control your hecking dogs, dog owners. No cat deserves to be chased by a potential predator like that. Cats deserve love, comfort, and a forever home. I'd say "change mind", but on this matter - you can't.

Look. I'm not saying that all dogs do that. My cat met plenty of dogs who came to visit us with their humans, who just wanted to be her friends. One Shih Tzu even brought her his favorite toy over and over again. It's not the dogs' fault that my cat is afraid of them, regardless. But you just can't deny that sometimes, sometimes, dogs pose a real danger to cats. And this is what I don't like seeing. But luckily for this one cat below, Baby, she was rescued. If we had not seen this story for ourselves we would not have believed it to be true, it is just that much like a movie. They really will get you. They have a one brain cell mind of their own, and they might trick you into thinking something's wrong when all is well. That's exactly what happens in this story, when after six months of using his automatic litter box, a silly orange decides he will help the litter box in it's disposal. He didn't realize before that there's a delay from the litter box after the cat uses it, and takes the clump and breaks it up before disposing of it. The one brain cell orange realizes this and thinks, "I should help out." So he decides to hop back in the litter box and break up the clumps himself so it's easier for the litter box to take care of. This is a selfless and sweet gesture for the cat, and also incredibly silly and stupid. This cat, named Romeo, concerns his owner when the cat dad sees that the clumps are different sizes. He calls the vet immediately and they tell him he needs to go to the ER.

Concerned and afraid, they go. Any pet pawrent knows that pets are not cheap. After several checks, tests, and procedures, the vet claims there's nothing wrong with him. Living with a cat means accepting that something unexpected is probably going to happen every day. A pen disappears. A roll of toilet paper gets shredded. A houseplant suddenly has bite marks. The evidence is usually scattered all over the floor, while the furry culprit sits nearby looking completely unbothered.

The impressive part is the confidence. Cats never hesitate before making a questionable choice. If they think they can jump onto the top shelf, they're going to try. If there's a tiny gap behind the couch, they're squeezing through it. Whether the plan actually works out is a problem for later.

An office full of coworkers fell for three friendly void kittens, but one family made sure two siblings stayed together

Some people bring home office supplies from work. This family somehow came home with two kittens instead.

The workday started with an unexpected surprise when three friendly little void kittens were found hanging around the office courtyard. They were comfortable around people from the start, making everyone suspect they hadn't been born outside. Before long, the entire office was stopping by to say hello, including one very excited 9-year-old who had already started campaigning to take them home.

The original plan had been to wait another year before adding kittens to the family. They already had two young cats at home and were still missing the senior cat they had lost last October. Then the Cat Distribution System stepped in and moved the timeline up a little.

As coworkers started falling in love with the kittens, one was adopted almost immediately. Another coworker considered taking a second, but that raised a bigger question. Nobody wanted to separate a bonded pair. Instead of watching the siblings go their separate ways, the family decided to bring both remaining kittens home together.

Finding homes for stray kittens is already a happy ending, but knowing two siblings get to grow up side by side makes it even better. They'll have a familiar face while they settle into a new house, explore every corner together, and probably team up for plenty of kitten-sized trouble.

For now, the pair is settling into a quarantine room while they adjust to indoor life, and the naming process is still underway. Temporary names like Midnight and Star Destroyer are already setting a pretty high bar.

Some deliveries show up in cardboard boxes. Others arrive in an office courtyard and completely change the rest of the workday.

If your partner tells you that it's either them or the cat… the choice is pretty obvious.

We always tell people that pets are something that they have to discuss early on in the relationship, especially when one or both of them already have pets. Some people are just not cat people, as hard as it may be to believe. It's important for your cat to like your partner, but it's more than important for your partner to like cats. We have already heard stories of people giving their partners ultimatums - "it's either me or the cat", but we tend to hear these stories because the people this happens to turn to the internet for advice. They want to get support from people online if the people in their life are not giving it to them. And then the internet, of course, tells them that they should choose the cat over the person, they help these people see that it's okay to leave because of something like this, and then we get a happy ending. Rarely do we see the flip side of the coin - someone caving to a toxic relationship.

Unfortunately, the woman we'll be talking about today did cave. And we're not mad at her. We understand that some situations are difficult to explain, especially when there are kids involved. All we know is that we are happy that things ended up working out, even if it happened eight years later. The toxic man is now an ex, and the beloved cat that she and her daughter were forced to surrender was found… as a sick senior stray. He was brought to a vet, and at the vet's, they found this woman's information still on the cat's chip. He's back home now, where he belongs, and that's what really matters.

It's something we know will come but never want to face until it's right in front of us. The grieving process is different for everyone. Some adopt a new pet right away, others wait until they feel "ready" again, and others get new pets thrust upon them by the universe. Or, in this case, by the Cat Distribution System.

While cycling on a remote levee road, our rescuer saw a cardboard box that seemed incredibly out of place. It was clearly taped up, opened, and then left there. So, naturally, he stopped to check it out, and found two tuxedo kittens trapped inside. Just for some context, this was less than a week ago, so you can imagine how hot it must have been in that closed box baking in the sun.

He planned only to foster, but he and his wife quickly fell in love with the two kitty cuties. The hole in their hearts left by their doggos is now wholesomely filled with two tiny kittens who bring them more joy than they ever could have imagined. Will dogs ever be in the cards again? Probably. But anyone who's ever adopted kittens knows that they are a lot of work, so the couple is currently focused on giving these two babies the best lives they can.

This little kitten was sitting alone in the middle of the road when one driver spotted him on the way home. It would've been easy to assume he'd run off or that someone else would stop. Instead, they made a U-turn. The kitten didn't waste a second. He walked right over, purring, meowing, and leaning into the person who had just given him a second chance. It's hard not to wonder how long he'd been hoping someone would do exactly that.

He may have been tiny, but he already knew how to make himself at home. Before long, he was eating, making biscuits, wandering around on curious little legs, and soaking up every bit of affection he could find. Rescue kittens have a remarkable way of looking ahead instead of behind. The rough days seem to disappear the moment they realize they're warm, safe, and no longer alone.

A trip to the vet showed he'd need some medicine and a little extra care, but the outlook was far brighter than it could've been. Sometimes the biggest victory isn't hearing that a kitten is perfectly healthy. It's hearing that they're going to be okay.

The rescue also came at a moment his new human wasn't expecting to need one. They later shared they had been driving home thinking about and missing their grandfather when the kitten appeared in the road. Getting bad news at the vet's is every pet owner's worst nightmare. You take them there exactly for this, of course. If there are bad news to get, it's best to get it as soon as possible, when there is still something to do about it, ways to help, to get them better, to get them to live longer and as happy as they can be. But that doesn't make it any easier. You hope that when something happens, when you see a reason to take your cat to the vet, that it will be nothing, that the vet will tell you that your cat just got spooked by something and that's it. But at some point, as our cats grow older, most of us will likely have to face some kind of negative news about them.

When the people in today's story were told that their cat had at most two years left, they went home heartbroken. As any cat owner would. But they didn't lose hope. And they certainly didn't give up. They did everything that their vets told them to do, and it seems that their cat wanted to live just as much as they wanted her to live. Because everything that they did paid off. Listen, "Beware of Dog" signs are common. You can get them basically everywhere. "Beware of Cat" signs… those are rare. At best, you would have to go online to order one. At worst, you'll have to get one made especially for you. And it usually means paying a lot more for the sign and waiting a lot longer for the sign to come than just- going and buying the dog version of the sign. We imagine that's what the cat owner in today's story was thinking.

He needed the sign. Some cats are so spicy that they really do require you to have it. Anyone who owns cats knows that they can be a whole lot to deal with sometimes. My cat likes me, and every once in a while, she still pounces. And strangers? Don't even get me started on that. Best case scenario is her running away and hiding under the bed. Worst case scenario… maybe I should get a sign like that too. So, it's not that the sign was a lie. It was not meant to be deceptive. It wasn't about a dog, sure, but it was a necessary warning. Because, as the man who tried to pet this forbidden cat found out, some cats need to be worked a little before they allow you to approach them.

And Gerald… Well, clearly Gerald has standards for the humans that he allows around him. Should have known that from the sign alone. But even if you didn't, one look at Gerald through the window would have let you know that he is one cat that you should not be messing with. We think he's scarier than half the dogs that get signs like this, and he is about a third of their size.

Cats are some of the most sleepy creatures on earth, along with Koalas and ourselves, of course. They can fall asleep anywhere, and in the weirdest and most uncomfortable positions ever. We don't know why or how they're able to fall asleep like that, but they do.

Some people say that it is actually not good for their health to wake them up when they fall asleep, because it causes them to be stressed out. It's never our intention to cause them distress; we love them, but sometimes it's impossible not to! We need to do stuff around the house: clean up, wash the dishes, do the laundry… all those things make quite a bit of noise and are an obstacle for our babies to get some real rest. That's where the side-eyes start. We keep on living like we're used to, waking them up in the process, but instead of leaving somewhere else to sleep, somewhere quiet, they just stay there and look at us with the most intense disgust that they can master. Some humans never get to express that level of disdain in their eyes, but our cats do it naturally.

Our sleeping beauties are perfectly aware of the fact that we live and breathe for them, and they take advantage of that. They will climb to our dinner tables, because they know we wouldn't dare tell them off. They jump into our beds and walk over our pillows. They get into our closets and sleep on our clothes, leaving all their cat fur over our black coats and sweaters. Yes, they go to sleep in the most inconvenient places.

We think that a lot of people can relate to this experience - their cat adopting them right when they needed their help the most. I certainly can. Back when I was 17, going through one existential crisis after another, when nothing felt like it was going quite right - that's when my cat found me. Independence Day, dark outside, I hear an itty bitty meow behind me, little tiny paws pitter pattering as she followed me home, and nothing has been the same since. This tiny creature has brought so much joy into my life back then, and 11 years later, gently napping by my side as I write this, she is still bringing me just as much joy as before. Because sometimes, the CDS knows that you need a cat even when you don't know it, and that is exactly what happened in today's story.

Except in this story, the CDS decided to take on two challenges. Not only did this man just lose his loyal and stunning dog of 15 years, he is also someone who has proclaimed to be someone who's "not a cat person". But that doesn't matter to the CDS. We think that people outside the cat world are not really aware of this concept. Bonded pairs. Cats are supposed to be solitary animals, right? That is what people generally think about them. Cats prefer to be on their own, without anyone bothering them. But anyone who actually owns a cat knows otherwise. If my kitty actually wanted me to leave her alone, then why does she climb into my bed every night, snuggle into my neck and purr? Why does she wait, every single day, for me to sit in the purrfect position on the couch so that she could rest on top of me? Cats love their humans so much. They bond with us more than we know. We know that. That's proof that they can bond. But they don't always bond with us. Sometimes, cats bond with other cats. That is what we call a bonded pair.

Bonded pairs come together in different ways. Sometimes, you adopt two cats completely separately, and after that, they bond with one another. I can't express how much I love historical warfare and cats. Yes, these two things. I managed to make cats my everyday experience, with being a cat mom and writing right here on the greatest cat content hub on the internet, I Can Has Cheezburger. One of our favorite things about cats is that they do not let anything stop them. We humans are not always quite as strong. It's enough for one migraine to catch me off guard, and my whole day is ruined. Meanwhile, my cat, when she was sick, pretended that everything was fine for two weeks, playing around, causing chaos, doing everything normally, until she couldn't anymore. Until I caught her, red-pawed, with a fever higher than she has ever had. Cats don't let illness or disability stop them from living their best lives. A deaf cat will scream louder than any other for his breakfast. A blind cat will still play around and cause chaos just like any other. And tripod cats… probably don't even realize that they are one leg short of other cats, jumping around, playing, and doing as many shenanigans as they feel like doing.

The cat in today's story certainly didn't notice. Or maybe he just didn't care. Why would he? Everything in his life started working out purrfectly right after his operation. The following day, the right human found him and he got adopted into his forever home.
