When a cat chooses you, they will not stop at anything until you choose them back.

Usually, when we talk about cat adoption stories, it's always so easy and wholesome. A cat chooses its human, and the human simply has no choice in the matter. Right? And that really is how it is most times. Cats are very purrsistent once they decide that they want to adopt someone, and we - usually - can't resist them for long. Of course, it's not always easy. It's not always that cut and dry. Sometimes, you really are not ready to adopt a cat. Sometimes, you have too many of them. And sometimes, the cat who chose you… already technically belongs to someone else.

At what point is caving into a cat's demands considered stealing them? Because the cat in today's story clearly made a decision. We don't know much about how he is treated at home. All that we know is that for two years, this cat has been sneaking into the neighbor's home, demanding cuddles and love at every opportunity. Now, maybe he's genuinely loved at home. Maybe it's all fine there. That doesn't take away from the fact that this adorably unique cat chose a human. And although that human managed to resist for much longer than we would have, eventually, like anyone who's been chosen by a cat before, that human caved.

Who needs a yoga mat when you've got a cardboard box, and you're a cat?

Have you ever seen how a cat can shape-shift and squeeze into the tiniest space? Honestly, it's an amazing thing to see. I really cannot understand how they can flex their bones and their whole body just to squeeze through a tiny hole in the wall or fit into the smallest box in the house. How can they find that comfortable? Also, did you know there's no scientific name for that ability? Who would have thought! I don't know of any other animal on Earth with such a gift, and I find it crazy that no one has decided to name it. Well, not the scientists, at least. Because the internet world decided to call that "Liquid cats", and it fits perfectly.

Although no scientist has given this cat feature a nerdier name, one did study it to understand how cats think when they try to fit into small spaces. A 2024 study called "Cats are (almost) liquid" examined exactly this: how they squeeze into narrow spaces and adjust their bodies to fit, no matter how small or uncomfortable it might be.

This ability really amazes me, and I'm intrigued to understand why they do it. Maybe there's no reason, and they like to flex their bodies… maybe they find it relaxing. That's why I find it funny to compare it to pet Pilates. If you think about it, one leg squeezing the other, sucking in the belly, twisting and turning, it sounds like a stretching class or a Pilates session. So, perhaps cats are working out when doing this! And kudos to them! Just looking at them motivates me to get my work out in!

"Man's nest friend" is apparently a saying that applies to big cats too.

Everyone knows that dogs are so ridiculously friendly. It's one of the things that they are the most known for, actually. Man's best friend. Of course, as cat people, we think that this is slightly discriminatory against cats, who are our purrsonal best friends. But alas, we accept it. Because it's accurate. Because dogs have the ability to befriend literally anything that moves. Dogs will become best friends with ducks, with rabbits, with chicks, with foxes, with parrots… Basically every animal that you can think of, a dog has likely befriended in the past.

Even cats, who are so, so different than dogs - in their behavior, in their interpretations of other creatures' behaviors - cannot withstand canine cuteness. Cats and dogs hating one another is something that everyone knows, that every child learns, but it's not true. Because of dogs. Because of how persistent they are. Cats and dogs can be best friends. It's just a matter of patience from both sides. It's not impossible for a cat to initiate a friendship with a dog, but it is rare. Cats are wary of creatures they don't understand, especially ones whose behavioral cues are opposite to theirs.

This is true not just for house cats. Since dogs have this ability to get along with anything and everything, they also become really good friends with animals that are a little less… domestic. We're talking about animals that most people would never expect to see snuggling up to a dog, let alone treating one like family. But sometimes, those friendships happen in the most unexpected circumstances.

Take today's story, for example. A tiny lion cub who was abandoned by his mother. He needed the same thing that every baby animal needs: someone to care for him. A mom. Someone who would keep him safe, give him affection, and help him feel a little less alone in a world that is suddenly a lot bigger and scarier than it was before.

Putting him with other lions was not an option. He was too small, too fragile, not quite "lion" enough yet. And so, the vets around him started thinking about options, and the best option of the bunch turned out to be… a Labrador.

At first, they were unsure about whether this connection would succeed or not. The dog had never interacted with lions before, and the lions knew nothing about dogs. But this is something that has been done before. Cheetah cubs get paired with dogs often - to help them socialize. And the vets knew that. So, they took a chance. And apparently, the Labrador didn't need much convincing.

A baby is a baby, and if one needs a little extra care, well, somebody has to do it. The two became instant best friends. The little Lab took the lion cub under her wing and raised it as if he was one of her own, giving him a chance at real happiness in this world.

Doing laundry is already annoying enough without discovering that your washing machine has a new tenant. You finally gather up all your dirty clothes, separate the colors, and get ready to throw everything in, only to find a cat sitting inside the drum like they've been waiting for you to arrive. Judging by the look on their face, they're not particularly interested in giving up their spot.

Apparently, the washing machine is prime feline real estate.

Cats have always been drawn to strange little hiding places, especially ones that weren't designed with them in mind. Cardboard boxes, bathroom sinks, kitchen cabinets, and laundry baskets are all popular choices. But some particularly curious kitties have taken things a step further by climbing straight into the washing machine. Why settle for a regular cat bed when there's a perfectly good appliance sitting around?

We have to wonder what goes through their little heads when they discover these places. Do they think they've stumbled upon a secret bedroom? Are they investigating where all those mysterious socks disappear to? Or are they simply pleased to have found another spot where their humans can't easily reach them? Knowing cats, there's a decent chance they just saw an open door and couldn't resist exploring.

You know how stubborn cats can be once they've decided something belongs to them. You could have three loads of laundry waiting, but your feline roommate has other plans. They'll sit there looking perfectly comfortable while you try to explain that the machine actually serves a purpose. Unfortunately, reasoning with a cat has never been particularly successful.

There's something especially funny about seeing a tiny feline surrounded by the enormous metal drum of a washing machine. Some look like they're posing for an album cover, while others appear ready to settle in for an afternoon nap. It's certainly not where you'd expect to find your pet when you go looking for them.

As amusing as the pictures are, washing machines are dangerous places for curious cats. Appliance doors should be kept closed when not in use, and it's important to check the drum before every load. Nobody wants a kitty accidentally getting caught inside.

Two kittens are better than one, especially when they're already best friends. You get twice the cuteness, twice the mischief, and twice the number of cats trying to steal your dinner. Your house might become a little more chaotic, but at least the kittens have someone else to bother when you're trying to sleep.

Bonded cats have their own little world, and we're just lucky enough to watch it. They'll spend hours chasing each other around the house, fighting over the same toy, and squeezing into beds that are clearly meant for one cat. Five minutes after a dramatic wrestling match, you'll find them curled up together like nothing happened.

We love seeing kittens grow up alongside their siblings. They learn how to play together, keep each other company, and develop little routines that their humans eventually come to recognize. Some pairs are constantly cuddling, while others prefer sitting a few feet apart and keeping an eye on each other. Either way, it's pretty sweet knowing they've got a familiar face nearby.

Their purrsonalities can be completely different, too. You might have one kitten who charges into every room like they own the place and another who needs three business days to investigate a cardboard box. Somehow, they make a pretty good team.

Margaret and Tapeworm are two kitties who have been sticking together since their earliest days. Their human discovered them in the yard back in February when they were around eight weeks old. The frightened kittens immediately climbed a tree, leaving their future owner to retrieve them.

Margaret, the black-and-white kitten, was feisty and nearly jumped out of their rescuer's hands. Tapeworm, the white kitten, was so frightened that he went limp and trembled. Both were tiny, weighing around 700 grams, and covered in fleas.

Their rescuer brought them inside, gave them baths, and set up a temporary home in the bathroom while they adjusted. Tapeworm was climbing into people's laps by day three, but Margaret took about two weeks to stop hissing whenever her human moved.

These days, Margaret is actually the clingier sibling. Apparently, she just needed a little more convincing that humans were worth her time.

Both cats are now healthy, vaccinated, microchipped, and approaching their first birthday. They've grown considerably since their days as frightened little backyard kittens, but they're still happiest hanging out near each other.

Here's hoping Margaret and Tapeworm celebrate many more birthdays together, preferably with twice the treats!

I bet this wasn't how this bride imagined her wedding day going. I bet this was waaaaaaaaay better.

As someone who recently got married (thank you, you may send gifts in the form of cat pics), I currently have a lot to say about weddings. I didn't think I would be one of those bridezillas, but the stress leading up to the wedding really did a number on me. Organizing a hundred people coming from all over the world to get to one place, on time, is much harder than it sounds. Let alone making sure everyone has enough to eat, and especially drink. I will say that it was one of the best nights of my life, but I'm so glad it's over and I never want to repeat it again.

You have no idea how many things can go wrong on your wedding day. For example, unforeseen gale winds blowing over your decorations and snuffing out the candles (this was my purrsonal experience), your DJ cancelling last minute, or in our bride's case below, getting loafed on by stray cats that completely halts your wedding to a standstill.

Imagine you invite all your family and friends to a dream destination wedding in Jamaica. Everything is going smoothly, until one of the stray resort cats stumbles upon your wedding ceremony, gets tired, and decides that your wedding dress is the purrfect place to lie down and have a nice rest. What do you do?

We all know that it's against the law to disturb a cat when it is resting on a certain part of your body or clothing, so continuing down the aisle wasn't really an option. Luckily, the bride seemed to be a feline fan, so instead of getting upset at the unexpected interruption, she simply sat down and awww-ed at the honor of being chosen by a cute stray.

On the grand scale of things that could derail your wedding, as a cat lover, being chosen by a stray cat is probably one of the best incidents that could pawssibly ever happen. What's a thing all cats love to do? Climb onto anything belonging to their hoomans and claim it as their own.

If I had a dollar for every single time my cat has jumped over my dining room chairs, my table, my kitchen countertops, my couch, or my bed, I'm telling you, I would retire tomorrow without having to ever work a single day in my life ever again. And I'm betting that is the case for many, if not all, of you out there, cat pawrents.

At this point, my chairs have become my cat's property. She sleeps there all the time, and the pillows are covered in her fur. I'm just grateful that she learned not to sharpen her claws on those chairs; otherwise, I would have to replace them in a week, and they're made of solid wood. They're not exactly cheap. She has a specific place to sharpen her claws, and though it took some time for her to scratch random pieces of furniture, eventually she learned to scratch in a specific place without ruining anything. Kudos to my furball for understanding instructions.

The Cat Distribution System has some suspiciously good timing. You can spend months thinking about getting another cat, making plans, and convincing yourself that you'll wait until the time is right. Meanwhile, some lucky humans casually mention wanting a kitten over dinner and find one waiting outside their house a few hours later.

We're starting to suspect the neighborhood cats are listening to our conversations.

Cat lovers know how dangerous it is to start thinking about fostering. You tell yourself you're only going to help a few kittens find homes, but suddenly you're imagining tiny paws running across the floor and little furballs sleeping on your chest. You've already picked out names, researched kitten food, and mentally rearranged your furniture to accommodate a cat tree.

The actual fostering part hasn't even started, and you're already getting attached to imaginary kittens.

It's especially tempting when you already have pets. Surely your cat would appreciate another friend? Maybe your dog has always wanted a tiny feline sibling to supervise. The animals might disagree with these assumptions, but that doesn't stop us from picturing an adorable household full of cuddling furry friends.

One couple recently experienced a rather suspicious coincidence after discussing their future fostering plans over dinner. The woman mentioned wanting to care for kittens once they'd renovated their home to make more space. They already had two cats and a dog, so adding another animal wasn't exactly on the immediate agenda.

Apparently, the Cat Distribution System wasn't interested in waiting for the renovations.

When they returned home, they heard distressed meowing coming from the bushes. A shy little kitten eventually appeared, crying and looking hungry. They offered him food and water, which he happily accepted, although some neighborhood cats tried to invite themselves to dinner.

After nobody claimed him in their local WhatsApp groups, the couple decided to wait until morning before bringing him inside. Sure enough, the kitten was still nearby the next day, and his new humans couldn't leave him behind.

A vet confirmed he was a healthy four-month-old kitten, and he received his vaccinations and other treatments. Now named Sasha, he's staying in the laundry room while the couple slowly introduces him to their other pets.

They haven't officially decided whether he's a foster or a purrmanent family member, but his rescuer already suspects he'll be staying.

We wouldn't be surprised if Sasha starts supervising the renovations himself. After all, he'll need somewhere to put his new toys.

Here, at ICHC, we pride ourselves on being cat expurrts. All of us writers have been here for years at this point. There is not a single piece of internet cat news that we have missed. The new cat breed that was discovered? We were on that. There is not a single cat meme that has evaded us. Heck, some of our own handmade memes have gotten attention online. Every cat vet emergency is something that we've seen before. Except when it comes to our cats, who make us panic when they do anything slightly off.

We know cats. Exept that apparently, we don't know them well enough. Somehow, after years of working in the cat field, today, we were caught off guard. We thought we had seen all the unique and rare cats that existed already. The Maine Coons, the Cornish Rex, the common orange… because oranges are all special in their own ways. But we were wrong. And we're so happy about that. A new cat discovered is always something to celebrate. And if that cat is a hilarious, chaotic menace… then all the better.

At 11 years of age, this cat's owners, unfortunately, could no longer give him the attention that he needed, so they started looking for other options. Of course, rehoming a cat is always difficult, but they managed to find the purrfect home for him. Our parents always try to give us the best life that they can. This leopard couple succeeded in doing it for their baby.

I think that this is something that every child can relate to. At some point in our lives, we become aware of our parents' finances. We get a deeper understanding of how they grew up, what their childhood looked like, and all the ways that they tried to make our lives better. We realize which things we took for granted that we shouldn't have. It's a little mind-blowing. Suddenly, we're a lot more thankful for everything that they have given us than we were before - all the ways that they worked so hard to make our lives better. That desire, of course, is true for all parents, not just humans. Felines are the same.

This desire to make life for our kids better is why stray cats sometimes bring their babies to the humans that they trust. It's why cats co-parent, taking care of babies from different litters together. And we're sure that the leopards in today's story, all 13 who were living in captivity, were trying to make life for their babies better in the same way. They simply couldn't - because of the conditions they lived in. Bad humans are everywhere. But so are good ones. And when the good ones came to rescue these 13 leopards, 2 of them were about to have a baby.

I know I'm not selling it well, but despite all of those downsides, living with cats is also one of the most soul-nourishing expurriences you can have in this lifetime. When they stretch their toe beans out after a big yawn, when they loaf on top of you and purr like car engines, and watching them play with a new toy are some of the few things that fill me with joy on a daily basis. That, dear readers, is worth more than anything money can buy.

For all of us who choose to live with the furry little criminals we call cats, know that the good parts outweigh the bad, and that at least we don't have to get up at 6 AM when it's raining to take our cats for a walk, like dog people do. And on the days when it just feels too hard, remember that there are thousands, if not millions, of other cat parents going through the same thing, and tweeting about it. We always talk about the power of the CDS. How it always finds us in the most unexpected times, in the most unexpected ways. And although we nearly never expect it when a cat adopts us, it always somehow happens at the purrfect time. We may think that we're not ready or that we can't do it, but the cats know better. They believe in us enough, and then, it just kind of… works out. That's how it happened for me, when I adopted my cat. I wasn't expecting it, I didn't think I could do it, and 11 years later, I give advice to new cat owners - in my purrsonal life and here on ICHC.

Maybe there is a reason for all of this. The CDS really does work in meowsterious ways. In some ways, it feels like the CDS is listening to us. That's why the cats always seem to come at the right time. But maybe it's not only listening to us. Maybe it's listening to everyone, including the ones of us who have crossed the rainbow bridge. At least, this is what the person in today's story has experienced. They are convinced that their late brother sent them on a mission to save some stray kittens in need of help. Every cat has its own little purrsonality, which is part of the problem. Either way, there's never a dull moment.

We can't forget about the entertainment value, either. One cat can get into plenty of trouble on its own, but a whole group of them? You might as well cancel your streaming subscriptions. Between the dramatic wrestling matches, coordinated attempts to steal dinner, and occasional midnight stampedes, you've got all the entertainment you need.

Naturally, every additional kitty comes with more responsibilities. Food, vet bills, litter boxes, and enough attention for everyone aren't things to overlook. We want every feline family member to be happy and properly cared for, no matter how tempting another adorable face might be.

You know you're a cat person when you can't walk past a stray without stopping to say hello. It doesn't matter if you're running late, carrying groceries, or supposed to be somewhere else. If there's a kitty nearby, you're going to spend at least five minutes trying to make friends with them.

Sometimes, those five minutes turn into a whole rescue mission.

We've all heard stories about people going out for groceries and coming home with a cat instead. One minute they're minding their own business, and the next they're buying litter boxes, picking out toys, and trying to figure out how to explain the new family member to everyone at home.

Stray cats have a pretty impressive talent for finding the right humans. Some are cautious and take weeks to warm up to people, while others will march right over, start meowing, and act like they've known you forever. Those friendly little faces are particularly hard to resist, especially when you know they're spending their nights outside.

One cat lover recently found themselves in exactly that situation after spotting a kitty near the drive-thru at work.

They'd come in on their day off to make up for missed shifts when they noticed a beautiful cat hanging around between a dumpster and a wooded area. Naturally, they went over to investigate.

The cat was incredibly friendly, meowing, rolling around, and making air biscuits. Coworkers explained that she'd been living around the property for months, with people occasionally leaving her water and food. Someone had previously mentioned fostering her, but nothing had come of it. With nighttime temperatures dropping into the 30s and a highway nearby, her new human decided she'd spent enough time outside.

The plan was to return the following day with supplies, catch the kitty, and take her straight to the vet. There was just one problem: they forgot the carrier.

Luckily, a coworker had one they could borrow. After a failed attempt to lure her inside with food, they managed to scoop her up using a jacket.

The cat wasn't thrilled about being in the carrier, but she handled the vet visit surprisingly well. She had no microchip, received her shots, and got a clean bill of health.

Now named Mitski, she's settling into her new home, where two other cats will eventually get to meet their new sister.

Coming across a family of feral kittens in your back yard is no easy thing to deal with, but when one of those kittens presents as a wibbly wobbly kitten who is barely able to cat, well, that is a whole different kettle of fish. And that is how our story begins with the appearance of a momma cat and her two babies, one of which had obvious problems standing up, walking and running. Though it was obvious that the feline's difficulties were not born of injures, it was not clear as to what actually was the cause of its physical difficulties. Initially our fur friendly family kept their distance, solely feeding the tiny felines as and when they came to visit. But soon things would change when the healthy kitten of the two suddenly stopped showing up. This was cause for concern seeing as their area was full of predators that could easily scoop up a healthy kitten, let alone a slow to move one. So when it was clear that danger was in the air, that is when our hooman protagonist stepped in to give this special kitten a furever home safe from the dangers of the outside world.

Now, we would like to take a moment to appreciate how delicate a situation this actually was. For those who know it is obvious that the last thing you ever do is separate a kitten from their mother, especially at such an early stage. It is critical for their development and emotional regulation. Which is why our rescuer did not do anything at first as it was obvious that momma cat was on top of the situation and handling the care of her special baby as well as her neurotypical one. But the moment that it became clear that danger had encroached upon their lives it was time to throw the rule book out of the window and step in.

It highlights the fact that while rules are in place for a reason and are important to follow, it is equally important to know when to ignore them and do what feels right. Because in that moment you will often find that you are saving someone's or in this case a cat's life. Now, in most Cat Distribution System stories our focus is on the feline, their condition and the way in which they are found. And while this story does have those elements it also harbors something far more mystical than even the CDS itself. We begin our tale when our rescuer releases their dogs to play in the yard. Upon which they hear the cries of what they assume to be a bird. But those high pitched wines were not of the aviary kind but from a tiny kitten trapped in a ditch in the neighbor's house. Wasting no time our rescuer got to work and scooped the kitten out of its spot and got it to safety. But not before spending a significant amount of time outdoors with the kitten crying out for its mother. This is a critical step in kitten rescues as often their momma is nearby and very interested in having her child retuned to her. Sadly for the kitten this was no the case this time and so it was take indoors into isolation from the fur family dogs and cats to calm down and decompress from its harrowing journey. It was at this point that our rescuer had time to reflect and sense that something greater might be at play. That this kitten might not have landed in their lap by happenstance. But that it might be a way for their late mother to reach out and show them that she is looking out for them. Their mother loved cats and the pair would often bond over their shared love of felines.

There are more than enough reasons to rather confidently assume that cats have mystical powers, or at very least are a part of a larger system that uses them to reach out to hoomans. Whether you look back at the ancient Egyptians, witches in the middle ages and even today with the Cat Distribution System. Cats have always had a mystical edge. So the idea that this tiny feline might be a gift from the great beyond is not all too difficult to stomach. In fact it is quite the heartwarming way for this hooman to remember their late mother and the love that they shared for feline kind.

You do not have to believe that cats are magic, you do not have to believe in magic at all. But you do have to appreciate that the arrival of this cat is incredibly serendipitous and is a very legitimate way for this hooman to connect with the memories and emotions tied to the people they loved in their life. Every family has that one dad who insists they're never getting a pet. It usually starts with a few complaints. The dog is too loud, the cat is scratching the couch, and somebody needs to explain why there's pet hair on his favorite shirt. Then, slowly, the complaints become less frequent. He starts asking whether the cat has eaten yet. He saves a little space beside him on the couch. Eventually, he's referring to himself as the animal's dad without a hint of irony.

The best part is that these dads rarely admit they've changed their minds. They'll insist they're only feeding the cat because nobody else remembered, or that they're letting it sleep on their lap because they don't want to disturb it. Meanwhile, everyone else in the family can see exactly what's happening.

We have always said that the cat distribution system works in meowsterious ways, but this one… this was truly spooky. Over my time as a writer here on ICHC, I have seen some strange, strange stories of the CDS in action, so I would like to think that I am somewhat of an expert on the matter. I have purrsonally written about cats following people to their homes when they go on walks. I've covered stories about kittens being handed to people in drive-throughs while they are at work. I have even covered one story about a cat literally flying through someone's window and into their lap and getting adopted. That's how the CDS works. But I have never seen something like this.

What would you have done if you found out that not one, not two, but four kittens broke into your car? And yes, they are very cute cats. But they are also fierce. They are hardened criminals. They are illegally small. Too tiny for this world but full of criminal thoughts, capable of meownipulation like no one else. There is no one who can say no to a single kitten, let alone four. Meowdern memes have nothing on the classics, and lolcats are the prime example of that nostalgic internet meme culture.

The fact that this week's lolcat batch has exactly 67 memes has made me remember that 6-7 meme. It's really not that long ago that Gen Alpha kids and teens were running amok, yelling "Six seven! Six Seven!" while flailing their arms and laughing as if they'd heard the best joke ever. It was annoying then, and it's annoying now. But then again, it's a little less annoying now… because it's gone. The streets are quiet, no six and no seven, and the kids have moved on to chase other, probably dumber memes.

And that's all there is about the modern meme cycle - it's there for a short period of time, getting its 15 minutes of fame, and then gone as fast as it came. Like a Zippo flame. But that's not how old-school memes work - not just because of nostalgic value, but because they're physically (and metaphorically, in our thoughts) still here. But some kitties are surprisingly social. They love meeting new people, exploring new places, and getting involved in whatever their humans are doing.

And we have to admit, bringing your cat along on a Furiday night sounds pretty entertaining.

For starters, you'd immediately become the most popular person in your friend group. Nobody would care what you've been up to all week once they spotted a cat hanging out with you. Everyone would want to say hello, take pictures, and ask a million questions about your furry companion. You might as well accept that you're no longer the main attraction.

We also wonder what cats would think of our usual Friday night conversations. Imagine sitting around with your friends, catching up on everyone's latest drama, while your kitty listens from the next seat. They'd probably have some pretty strong opinions about everything, judging by the looks they give us at home.

Then there's the matter of finding somewhere comfortable to sit. We all know how picky cats can be about their favorite spots. You could find the nicest seat in the place, only for your feline friend to decide they'd rather sit directly on your lap. And once they've settled in, you're probably not going anywhere for a while.

I don't need to iterate on how cats enter every cardboard box they see, or literally any other small space they locate. But first - why do they even do that? In short, cats simply feel safe inside. Having an enclosed space around them, like a cardboard box, gives them a sense of security - however real or not. They also view these spaces as strategic vantage points to pounce on prey from - so basically a place to cosplay big cats. So basically it's just another proof that cats make no sense at all. Their logic is not logicing. But this is why we love them so much.

My cat found herself in the most ridiculous situations because of this internal drive she has to enter literally anywhere. To do the fits and sits even if she doesn't fit and cannot sit. She once got herself stuck behind the washing machine because she absolutely insisted this nook must be explored - she just had no idea how to get herself out. At another time, she got locked inside the pots and pans cabinet, which is protected by a child lock. It was open for one second, and she still managed to get herself inside.

But all of that doesn't make her experience with classic cardboard boxes any easier. That child lock I've mentioned? It's there for a reason. The reason being a 1-year-old roaming free in the house because she's been walking since she was 10 months old. That kid sees the cat entering a cardboard box I left on the floor for her and thinks, "I'm going to get inside to cuddle the cat." My cat bolts away every single time. Raising cats and kids together is not a simple task.

But cats will always cat, and that means they'll fit, sit, and be absolutely smug about it. And honestly? It makes them even more special than they already are.

What happens when our purrsonal ethics conflict with the biological needs of an animal we chose to care for?

There are a lot of things about cat ownership that become so normal you quickly furrget how objectively weird they are. You scoop their bathroom business into a plastic bag multiple times per day, you spend money on furniture specifically designed to be destroyed, and you quickly learn the difference between their different kinds of meows. One can mean "I'm hungry" and another can mean "I saw a bug a few hours ago and you must know about it." You fellow cat pawrents know what I'm talking about.

And then there is feeding them meat. I don't think anyone likes it. All the wet foods have this weird smell that, even after 12 years of owning cats, I still can't get over. Don't even get me started on the ingredients.

Most longtime cat pawrents probably do not think very deeply about it every time they crack open a can. Cats eat meat, that is simply part of the deal. For one brand-new kitten owner, though, that realization caused something of a moral meat crisis.

They eagerly went out and bought them high-quality kitten food while focusing on giving their baby the best pawssible start. Then, as a strict vegan, they realized that every can of cat food represented an ethical equation they had spent years trying to remove themselves from. With shy cats, patience pays off more than anything else.

We, as humans, have a certain understanding of what love looks like. And whether we do it on purpose or not, we apply that understanding to our cats as well. Now, with dogs, it's simpler. Their way of showing affection is very obvious, it's very in your face. With cats, it's not quite that easy. Some cats are total velcro cats. They are all about physical contact. They will cuddle with you and climb up on you, and if you don't pet them at least 116 times a day, they will riot and directly on your face. But most cats are not like that.

Cats have their own love language. Cats show affection by slowly blinking at you. They show affection by turning their back on you, by sleeping next to you, by spending long stretches of time in the same room as you. And we know- that's not the same as cuddling your cat. Of course it's not. But their expression of love is no less valid than yours.

And then, there are shy cats. And shy cats, ones who are a little scared of humans, a little wary of letting their guard down, they show affection in their own ways as well. They do it in small ways, slowly warming up to you. We can't tell you the exact way. It's up to you to pay attention to them and learn how they show love. Fall is the purrfect time to sit back with a hot cocoa and soak up the silence.

Fall is different than summer. And not just in the obvious ways. We're not talking about the cold and the rain and the sweaters and pumpkin spice things, though all of that is nice too. Getting a second cat is always a bit of a gamble. I've seen rescued cats and dogs behaving in the same way. The first week my kitty was at home after she was rescued, she was terrified. We couldn't even open the front door without her getting scared and hiding. Watching the Cat Distribution System work its magic is like looking at the most heartwarming magic show in the world.

But they (it?) have three parts to their name, so I'll try my best to explore and explain what the CDS actually is in three parts - just like the three cats it sent to this one woman below.

Firstly, cat. When you talk about the CDS, you talk about cats. There are plenty of cats in need out there on the streets - some are hungry, others are suffering extreme weather conditions, and other cats deal with all of these while also giving birth to kittens outside. That's a crazy thought to hold, especially if you're a cat lover. For me at least, it's hard thinking there are cats outside right now that might need help that I can't give them at the moment. It breaks my heart a little.

Secondly, distribution. The CDS doesn't just deal with cats - it sends them where they need to go. Or, you know, it distributes them. Somewhere out there, there's a human who will give a cat a forever home, and that might just be this specific human and that specific cat. And that distribution part is what makes this matchmaking take place. But how do they know to match the right cat to the right person, and vice versa?

That's where the third part comes in, the system. It's not random, despite it being seen as such. Some cats are just wilder than others.

There are cats who can sit on your lap all day long, only taking food and bathroom breaks because they have to - and then returning to steal some more of your body warmth (and your heart). But then there are the absolute demons, the spawns of satan who were probably pspspsed here during a dark summoning ritual. My cat is not like that. Sure, she has the occasional zoomies trip in the middle of the night, but she's not the complete ruckus mess some other cats are. My friend's cat, though… he's another story completely.

Way before I had a cat of my own, I took a vacation for a month, and it just so happened that this friend needed a place to stay. I sublet my room to her and her cat. She warned me he's a wacky one, and this wasn't news - I already heard the stories about him directly from her. The Prophet was his name. Well, Elijah initially, but the more character he's shown as he grew up, the more it became clear he needed his own title. So… Elijah The Prophet, yes? He's an absolute maniac.

When I came back home after the sublet/vacation period, I returned to a room I did not recognize. The curtains were rolled up above the window, the computer was on the highest shelf of my closet (yes, inside), and the office chair was shredded to pieces. Generally, of course, we are against cats being rehomed. There are so many solutions to so many issues that can be found. Letting your cat go should always be the last choice. Because as smart as cats are, they are still just cats, and they don't understand rehoming. They just think that they were abandoned by their owners. But sometimes, when the problem is insurmountable, surrendering your cat is not only the right choice, it's also the kindest one.

We always say that people should adopt a cat when they are ready, when they have enough stability in their lives. If that stability is gone, and if it can't be brought back, then you should not have a cat. It's simple to understand, but it's not easy to do. Of course, people do it all the time. We could write stories about abandoned cats every day, and we wouldn't run out. The only thing that we ask is that if you have to do it, do it right. Don't throw your indoor cat onto the street to fend for themselves. Find them another home if you can, and if you can't, take them to a shelter. I did not grow up with cats. Despite that, I thought that I knew cats. I always loved them. Pspspsing cute stray cats was one of my favorite activities forever and always. And I did know a lot. But not everything. Of course, a bunch of things ended up surprising me. The fact that cats have purrsonalities - like, the fact that they are really opinionated and like making sure that we know their opinions. The fact that cats are smart - that they learn our patterns and use that knowledge against us all the time. And the fact that they even though cats hate vet visits, they love giving us heart attacks sometimes and forcing us to take them.

But one thing about cats that I thought was obvious that ended up taking me by surprise is that cats show affection in all kinds of silly ways. I knew about the meaning of slow blinking, and I knew that if a cat comes to cuddle you, that's basically a declaration of love. I did not know that them showing you their bootie is a sign of affection. I didn't know that my cat sleeping by my feet in bed is them showing love. For my cat specifically, I didn't know that her running to greet me when I come home is a way of showing affection until I realized that she only does it for me and no one else. We have a theory that everyone is secretly a cat person. Some people just haven't met the right cat yet. You can spend your entire life insisting you're a dog person, but all it takes is one adorable little face to make you reconsider everything you thought you knew about yourself.

Of course, we understand why some people are hesitant around cats. Unlike dogs, who tend to make their feelings pretty obvious, cats can be a little harder to read. One minute they're rubbing against your legs, and the next they're looking at you like you've committed some terrible offense. Their affection often comes on their own terms, and earning their trust can take a little patience.

But that's also part of what makes getting close to a cat so rewarding. I absolutely would. I'm in a neo-soul band, but unfortunately, none of us are cats. That would have been hilarious. In fact, we tried to make our bassist's cat part of the band, but his cat wasn't so interested. He ran away during every practice session and only came back for the food.

For a big part of my life, I enjoyed music as a listener. I grew up listening to other people's songs. So for about five years now, we've been creating our own songs, which has given me another way to enjoy music. I can try cool grooves with my friends and help turn something we're playing around with into something interesting.

Cat person or not, seeing stray cats in need always moves something in people's hearts.

I was not always a cat person, but that changed when I started living with a cat. The cat was not mine, he officially belonged to a roommate I lived with when I was a student. This is the cat that made me warm up to cats, the previously self-described "dog person, but cats are also okay I guess". It made me love cats so much that I adopted my own cat, my beloved Cassie, whom I held in my arms for the first time when she was a month-old kitten. She's seven now, and the queen of my heart.

But that's the meowgical power of cats over people. They might not be "cat people" like us - dedicated fans and feline fanatics - but their hearts are opening up to the possibility. And that's how cat people are made, just by being around cats, learning to live by their side, or seeing that they're in need. This latter option is what this one woman experienced and shared with the broader online feline family - she was not a cat person. But one mama cat and her two kittens lived outside her house for a few months, in the grueling heat, in need to be homed.

It's a psychological phenomenon that works between humans too. Have you ever tried to introduce a new cat to your current cat?

Well, I've tried, and let me tell you, it's not as easy as people think. At first, you're so excited because you think, "My furbaby won't be alone anymore when I go to work; he'll have a companion!" But then you realize it's not all rosy in the garden.

You see, cats are very territorial animals, whether in the wild or as one of our fluffy pets. They consider their territory their own, and they can feel threatened and feel the need to protect and defend it if another cat trespasses. Granted, not all cats are so dramatic, especially not domestic ones. In my experience, most of the time they'll just be annoyed and indifferent to the new cat for a while. Then they just start tolerating each other while pretending the other one doesn't exist. Basically, that's what I did in high school with my classmates. No wonder my boyfriend says I have the purrsonality of a cat.

Either way, what happened with my cats was something along those lines. For context, my grandmother and I live next to each other, and she has a cat who loved coming to visit. She would eat here, sleep in my bed, walk around and explore the whole place, and basically treat my house as her own. But then, one day, I brought home my current cat. It was all from one day to the next, so there was no time to try an adaptation process. My grandma's cat was not happy. She didn't attack or anything; she's not aggressive, but she refuses to come inside my house now and hisses every time she sees my cat. I'm a little sad about it, but I still get to see her when walking in the yard, when I go to Grandma's house, and I know she's well taken care of.

In this case, we have an orange furball named Copper, who suddenly got an unexpected companion. Let's just say it'll take a while for him to process everything.

But sometimes a neighborhood cat decides to join you, and suddenly your peaceful evening stroll involves making a new furry friend who has no intention of leaving your side.

Cats aren't usually the first animals we think of as walking companions, but some are enthusiastic about tagging along. They'll trot beside you, weave between your legs, and stop to make sure you're still paying attention. You might even find yourself slowing down because your new friend insists on investigating every bush along the way.

We wonder what makes certain cats so comfortable approaching strangers. Maybe they're naturally outgoing, or perhaps they've learned that friendly humans are excellent sources of snacks and head scratches. Either way, it's hard to ignore a kitty who's determined to accompany you down the street.

One family recently discovered just how persistent a neighborhood feline can be.

During an evening walk, a cat ran up to them and followed them all the way home. They weren't sure whether he belonged to someone nearby, so they gave him some food and sent him on his way, hoping he had a home to return to.

The following night, they headed out for another walk. At first, their new acquaintance was nowhere to be seen. Just when they thought he wouldn't make an appearance, he came racing toward them and appeared right at their feet.

One evening together had been enough to convince this kitty that he'd found some excellent walking buddies. We wouldn't be surprised if he starts expecting them to show up at the same time every evening. Cats are pretty good at remembering routines, especially when food is involved.

They've started calling him Oliver, although his rescuer suspects he'll eventually collect about ten different nicknames, just like their other cats. We know how that goes. One day you're calling your cat Oliver, and a month later you're addressing him as Sir Fluffington or some equally ridiculous invention.

We hope Oliver's situation gets sorted out soon. Whether he has a family looking for him or needs a new home, at least he's somewhere warm tonight.

Who needs a life coach when you've got a cat at home? These furry little philosophers seem to have everything figured out, from getting enough sleep to convincing someone else to pay all their bills. Their advice might be questionable, but they've certainly mastered the art of living comfortably.

Cats have some pretty interesting ideas about how hoomans should live. For starters, they firmly believe that getting enough sleep should be everyone's top priority. Feeling stressed? Take a nap. Have a deadline approaching? Take another nap. Someone needs you to do something important? Pretend you didn't hear them and go back to sleep. We could probably benefit from adopting at least a little of that attitude.

They've also mastered the art of setting boundaries. Cats have absolutely no problem walking away from a conversation they're not interested in, refusing unwanted attention, or making their displeasure known when someone interrupts their alone time. Imagine having that level of confidence when someone invites you to an event you don't want to attend. A cat would simply stare at the invitation, knock it off the table, and carry on with their day.

Of course, not every piece of feline wisdom is particularly practical. Cats seem convinced that knocking objects off shelves is an acceptable way to solve problems. They also believe that anything left unattended automatically belongs to them, whether it's a sandwich, a laptop, or the warmest spot on the couch. We'd probably get into quite a bit of trouble if we started applying those rules to our everyday lives.

Their approach to relationships is equally entertaining. Cats expect their favorite humans to provide endless affection, delicious meals, and comfortable places to sleep. In return, they might occasionally allow us to pet them or bless us with the privilege of sitting nearby. Somehow, they've convinced us this arrangement is perfectly fair.

Still, our feline friends might be onto something when it comes to appreciating life's little pleasures. A sunny window, a cozy blanket, a delicious snack, and a few minutes of playtime are often enough to make their entire day. They don't need elaborate plans or expensive entertainment to enjoy themselves.

So, we're taking a moment to appreciate the hissterical wisdom our cats have to offer. Their advice might not always be useful, but it certainly makes life more entertaining. And who knows? Maybe the secret to happiness really is taking more naps and worrying less about everything else.

When a cat adopts you, resistance is futile. Especially if it's a gigantic orange cat that bites French people.

I have mixed feelings about cat cafés. On the one hand, I love having a place outside my own home where I can be surrounded by cats, and on the other hand, I feel bad for them.

The good news is that cat cafés have improved a lot in the last couple of years. When they first started, they were basically a petting zoo for cats. No one really cared for the cats' needs, as they were merely a means to bring customers into the café. Now, the purpose of most of these cafés is for cat adoption instead of being entertainment for people while they dine or sip on a cup of mediocre coffee. Of course, there are still some cafés that use them as a tool, so always do your research before visiting a cat (or any animal) café.

Sometimes, people go there for the purrpose of finding a cat to adopt, while others, like the visitor in our "story" today from Japan, actually end up getting adopted. Simply coming in for a cup of coffee, they were warned about a purrmanently grumpy orange cat who had serious cattitude. He was notorious for knocking drinks off of tables and apparently biting French people. How he knew they were French, we have no idea, but apparently, he knew.

After a fair amount of warning, the menacing ginger cat actually climbed into their lap and started purring. Needless to say, the staff were shocked. They demanded the visitor take him home, even to the point of practically shoving adoption papers into their hands before leaving.

Even if this story is a well-written joke, there's still a lesson in there that we could all take home with us: don't judge cats by their appearances. Some of the "grumpiest" cats I've ever met have been the biggest snuggle bugs as soon as they meet their purrson and find a place they finally feel safe. And, as always, when a cat chooses you, your fate has already been decided for you. That's just the way the Cat Distribution System works.
