We've all seen cats who look purrmanently offended by the world. You know the type: you walk into the room, make eye contact with them, and immediately feel like apologizing for even breathing. Your very existence is an annoyance to them. They're grumpy cats, and they might be my favorite kind of cat ever.

Nova has that same kind of face.

This meowjestic Maine coon kitten has the kind of intense stare, strong facial feline facial features, and fluffy mane that made us look at her and go, "Hold on a minute… is that Ron Perlman??" And now that we have seen it, we cannot unsee it. She looks like she is about to star in a gritty detective drama, complaining about Millennials ruining something, then demanding that her pawrent open her a can of tuna to take the edge off of a ruff day. But, appearances can be deceiving.

Behind the extremely serious little face is apparently a certified snuggle-bug. Her hooman even describes her as "the most affectionate cat I've ever owned." LOL - you don't own a cat, but okay (and Nova certainly owns everything, just look at her). She may look like she has spent several decades working a physically demanding job and has opinions about your retirement plan, but in reality, she is just a giant fluffy baby who wants love, attention, and probably the warmest spot on the couch.

Abandoning a cat for doing a normal cat thing means you didn't deserve that cat in the first place.

Adopting a cat should not be a decision that is made lightly. Cats may not be the world's most complicated pets to take care of, but they do have needs, and there are things that you should know before you adopt. You should know which kind of food to feed your cat. You should know what snacks cats are allowed to have and not. You should know which flowers are poisonous to cats, and how much cats should drink daily, and how often to bring your cat to the vet. But more than anything, you should know that cats… are weirdos.

You may think that's funny, and it is, but it is also now. It is somerhing that you have to be ready for. You should know that cats have silly habits, that each cat is different, and that you will only find our what makes your cat a weirdo when they are finally comfortable enough to with you to show you their real selves. It should be something that you cherish, not dread. When it finally happens, you should be overjoyed, not respond by thinking that it's annoying and that it isn't what you wanted.

When this ginger cat was adopted for the first time, he seemed like the purrfect pet. Adoprbale, simple, precious. But he had one habit that ended up getting him sent back to the shelter. He meows. And fine, he may meow a little - a lot - more than the avergae cat, but that is not a bad thing. And it's exactly what he got abandoned for.

His new owner, on the other hand, appreciates her cat's silly habit just like she should. Instead of getting mad at him or upset with him for meowing as much as he does, she simply participates. She speaks to the cat, and he speaks back to her. They have full conversations, and yes, it is adorable. But it is still not quite as cute as when they sing together.

What fuels your fire to keep you meowtivated and happy on Tuesdays? Catnip. No, wait, sorry - our cat answered that one.

Everyone says that Mondays are the worst days, but I think everyone sleeps on how terrible Tuesdays are. You wake up knowing Mondays are going to be a struggle, so in a sense, you're kind of prepurred for it. If you're an organized and anxious adult, you probably also plan your Sunday night to be chill and go to bed (relatively) early to help make your Mondays more manageable.

But Tuesdays? You're exhausted from the weekend and from a full day of work that your body wasn't ready for. On top of that, you're so far away from the next weekend that it feels like your office is a holding cell devoid of all fun, enjoyment, and free time. Nothing to look forward to, just meetings, circling back, endless emails, and small talk with Sharon from finance. This is why we think Tuesdays are the worst day of the week.

I'm not just going to sit around and let every Tuesday drag me down, though. That's 1 out of every 7 days where I'm miserable, meaning that 52 days out of the year we all just sit there and silently suffer. No more, I say!

Of course, reading with a cat around isn't always easy. The second you open a book, they want to know why it's getting more attention than they are. First comes a paw on the corner of the page. Then a head pops up directly in front of the paragraph you're reading. Give it another minute and the whole cat is lying across the book.

Some cats skip all of that and go straight for chewing the corners. Apparently, every good book needs a few teeth marks along the cover.

Nobody expects a routine trip into the backyard to end with a brand-new kitten, but the Cat Distribution System has never been particularly concerned with convenience.

Two years ago, one future pawrent came home from work and let their dogs outside as usual. While waiting around for them, something next door caught their eye. Perched on top of the AC unit of a vacant house was a smol kitten, all by herself.

Obviously, a kitten sitting on an AC unit demands further investigation. Since the neighboring home had been empty for some time, they knew she probably had not wandered outside from there. Even better, they happened to have some cat food left from their previous cat, who had sadly passed away.

Armed with food, they approached the tiny visitor. This could easily have become one of those stories where someone spends three hours crawling underneath bushes trying to convince a terrified kitten to come out. Kimchi apparently had other plans. She stayed put and even allowed her future human to pick her up.

At that point, the Cat Distribution System had basically completed the transaction.

Kimchi was brought inside, and as her pawrent put it, "the rest is history." The tiny AC-unit kitten has since grown into a sweet, sassy and gorgeous adult cat with plenty of personality.

She is also apparently very affectionate. That would be completely adorable if Kimchi had not decided that 2 AM is the ideal time to remind her human just how much she loves them. Then again, nobody said being chosen by the CDS came with uninterrupted sleep.

Now, two years after that chance backyard encounter, Kimchi is celebrating her gotcha day in the home she was clearly meant to find.

What's cuter than a kitten? A kitten that is curled up beside a baby.

Some people believe that having babies while also being pawrents is not a good idea. They're afraid the pets will scratch or bite the baby, or they fear the baby will accidentally pull too hard on the cat's tail or something like that. My take on it is quite simple: they're wrong. For kids, growing up with pets is one of the healthiest and most wonderful experiences of childhood. They learn to be careful, mindful of other creatures, and kindhearted, and they make their first friend for life. For cats, they stay active while playing with the kid, which is good for their health (otherwise, some of them are too lazy to exercise), and they get endless opportunities to satisfy their curious nature with all the shenanigans toddlers pull off on a daily basis. This doesn't mean that we let our kids or pets just roam free and do whatever they want to each other, not at all. It means that we'll take the necessary precautions for everything to run smoothly, and then let them get to know each other while feeling free.

Having a furbaby at home is no impediment to having a hooman baby, if that's what worries some people. Of course, some cats are less willing to trust the unknown than others, but that's just a matter of introducing the new member of the family in a nice, stress-free way, so our furballs have time to adjust and understand why that hooman is so tiny and why it cries so much. But trust me, once your kitten fully embraces the existence of your child, they will never be alone again. Cats are extremely territorial and protective creatures, so if they single your baby out from everyone, that's the end of it: that child has earned a loyal babysitter for life. Some cats wait to be adopted, while others simply walk into your life and make the decision for you.

That is pretty much what happened to Reddit user maricano9, whose future feline best friend showed up during a rainy day at work. A random man appeared outside the shop holding a kitten, and when the future pawrent heard there was a cat outside, they immediately rushed to the door. The second it opened, the kitten jumped out of the man's arms and ran straight inside.

When they called after the man to ask if he wanted the cat back, he simply said "nope" and kept walking. This tiny guy was now the shop's problem. Or, as it would turn out, their newest family member.

After a few coworkers helped catch the unexpected visitor, the kitten got a tour of the workplace before his new human found a box and brought him home. The original plan was to take him to a shelter, but we all know how quickly those plans can change when an adorable kitten is involved.

There was still one important test. His future pawrent already had a cat at home and wasn't sure how the resident feline would feel about a surprise sibling. Thankfully, after a slow introduction, the two hit it off incredibly well. At that point, the Cat Distribution System had basically completed its assignment.

The newcomer received the incredible name Randy Peppercorns, and one year later, he is exactly where he belongs. His human says Randy is the love of their life and arrived when they needed him most.

We dare you to look at a pair of perfectly fluffy cat cheeks and not immediately want to give them a little squish.

Cats are already walking around with tiny noses, precious paws, meowgnificent whiskers, and enough fluff to make us lose our minds on a daily basis. Then some felines have the audacity to add ridiculously round cheeks to the mix. You know exactly the ones we mean. Their faces are basically two fluffy puffs with a tiny nose in the middle, and somehow we're supposed to admire them without reaching out and giving them a gentle squeeze.

The extra floofy felines really know how to make things difficult for us. Their cheeks puff out around their whiskers until their heads look twice as wide as the rest of their bodies. Some look like adorable furry dumplings, while others appear to be storing enough snacks in their cheeks to survive the winter. Either way, those faces are practically impossible to resist, especially when they're paired with big eyes and an expression that says they have absolutely no idea how cute they are.

Of course, whether you actually get to squish the cheeks is entirely up to the kitty. When the Cat Distribution System sends a cat your way, you'll know it's there. The cat will meow, and meow, and meow, and you will find him. They might be right there on the street corner, or they might be abandoned next to your hiking trail, and maybe even in the classic place of the bins behind your house. But we swear that some of these cats are found in such unlikely places, or downright weird places. Mostly, these are kittens, because they're so small they can weasel into so many holes, and because their sense of tenacity is developing very fast.

Take this one orange kitten, for example, who was found by a woman walking her dog in a place no other than inside a truck's tire. Not on, not above, not below. The kitten was inside the tire itself, right where it connects to the metal frame. If that's not some hidden talent, we don't know what is. But then again, it is an orange kitten. Orange cats are notoriously cheeky and quite dumb. If the Cat Distribution System hadn't left him stuck in that very weird place, he might've bolted right off, far away from the woman who was supposed to save him.

Just as this woman was pretty much surprised to find a kitten in a tire, so were we when we heard about it. But the thing is, we hear about kittens stuck in places quite often. The age-old question of whether dogs or cats are better pets is finally getting the answer we've all been searching for. Each camp has its own reasons for why their purrticular choice is the right one, but who can say for sure? Data. Data can tell us for sure.

It's a known fact that inflation and the rising cost of food, vet visits, and life in general have caused many pet owners in America to rethink their lives quite a bit. Ironically, as pets are getting more expensive, pet ownership is on the rise! Why? Because if pets are getting more expensive, so are babies. People, especially Americans, are having their first child (on average, of course) much later in life than their parents did, with many even questioning if they want to have them at all. And such, many of us (myself included) are adding pets to our family to supplement the lack of children.

So if more people are becoming pawrents, which one is better? Well, it turns out that cat ownership is on the rise! Over the past couple of years, the pet industry has seen a steady increase in cat food sales and a steady decrease in several dog food categories. We can only assume one thing from this data: more cats are turning families into feline families and turning everyday Joes into feline fanatics.

Of course, we knew that cats were the ideal pet way before this data came out. I can't say that all cats are low maintenance, but they are much more self-sufficient (unless you have an orange one). With more people traveling and moving between rentals, it's easier to take a cat with you that requires significantly fewer things than a dog. And, you don't have to take them on walks 3+ times a day or train them - all you have to do is give them a cardboard box and a ball of crumpled up aluminum foil, and you've got yourself a happy kitty.

A few baby cats will certainly help. Kittens can look innocent, surprised, sleepy, angry, all at once. Where are you going, little one? You still need both paws to hold onto a slipper. They always manage to look cute. Watching them look surprised by their surroundings hits the toughest person in their soft spot. There's nothing you can do to resist a baby cat's sweetness. You have to surrender.

Then their little heads start dropping and their eyes close halfway until they give up. Too much eepiness. That's when they become harder to resist. If they fit beside your leg and decide that's their spot for a nap, you'll let them settle in. Please adjust your plans accordingly. Now it's not the time to move or go to the bathroom. You stay there until the kitty wakes up.

That is the sort of energy we all have on a Monday. We're like zombies trying to get things done, but all we really want is a nap and a little affection. Some stories are worth remembering.

The internet is a fast-paced machine, churning out as much new content as possible every single day. We can't keep up. There is too much to see. And within that chaos, the speed of everything, a lot of stories get lost. Stories that deserve to be remembered. Every day, people post stories about their cats. Cats that they have rescued, cats they adopted, cats that adopted them. We cherish them all, we do. Behind every adopted cat there is a story. I have one too. But some stories stick out more than others. Some stories remain in our memories longer. The same is true for the people of the internet. Which is why, within all the new stories that come out and go viral, every once in a while, an old story goes viral too. And we think that - especially now - when the world is full of so many fake stories, it's important to remember the old ones, the ones that we know are real.

Of course, the person who posted this story on X last week didn't bother mentioning that it was an old one. People liked it and shared it just because it was wholesome, thinking that it was a new story. But I, as someone who has been writing about cats for many years now, knew the original story. And so I went on the hunt, looking for the original coverage, for more pictures, for updates, and of course, I found it all.

This story originally came out around ten years ago, and there is a reason that it has stuck in people's memories, including mine. It's one of those "stories that give you hope for humanity" kind of situations. A kid was given permission to choose any pet that he wanted in the shelter, and he went ahead and chose the oldest, shyest, chonkiest orange cat who had been in the shelter for many years and had been passed over again and again. There's no way to talk about what the Reddit user below has experienced with true integrity if you haven't experienced such a huge loss in your life as well. I don't know exactly what happened to his late girlfriend; I don't know if she dealt with health issues for a long time, or if she passed away suddenly. But two things are sure: First, she passed away young, with most of her life ahead of her. And second, she's a cat owner who left her two cats behind. Not on purpose, not because she wanted to, but because life (and its end) happens.

What I do know is that when a cat loses their person, they grieve just as a human would. They're confused because they don't know where their person has gone; they're sad because the person who brought them comfort, whom they loved, is no longer here. They go through all stages of grief while processing the fact that their person will not return. And how do you even begin to explain that to a cat? Well, you can't. Sometimes the Cat Distribution System makes you work for it, and sometimes your new kitten simply walks out from behind a tree and introduces herself.

One couple was out walking their dog when a tiny kitten randomly appeared from behind a tree. Instead of running away or keeping her distance, this little girl walked right up and happily accepted pets. She was even completely fine with being picked up. At that point, we're pretty sure the decision had already been made.

Her new hoomans had no idea what they were supposed to do with the kitten who had suddenly chosen them, but they couldn't exactly leave their tiny new friend behind. She was so calm and comfortable around them that it really did seem like she had picked out her family and was ready to head home.

And apparently, she chose very well.

A trip to the vet confirmed that their surprise kitten was healthy. She's now getting started on her vaccinations, with appointments planned to have her spayed once she's old enough and get her microchipped. This little lady went from hanging around behind a tree to having her entire future taken care of pretty quickly.

She's also adjusted to home life like an absolute pro. She's litter box trained, gets along well with the family dog, and has been nothing but sweet and calm since arriving. We have to wonder if she had this whole thing planned from the beginning.

Imagine rescuing a kitten and it ends up being a new species to introduce to the entire world! Now that's what we call a meowraculous rescue.

This isn't the first time, and it certainly won't be the last time that someone rescues a "kitten" that ends up being a wild cat. We've covered stories of people accidentally rescuing puma cubs, or the cat turns out to be a rare breed like a Norwegian forest cat, but none of these feline rescues have ever turned into the discovery of the century. It's not every day that you get to introduce a new wild cat to the scientific world. So, everyone, please let us furmally introduce you to Leopardus tilcayo.

A Bolivian man reportedly found one of these kittens near a forest road and brought it home, believing it was just a regular cat that got lost in the forest. After watching it grow, he started to suspect something was fishy, and it wasn't the tuna he was feeding the little catto. He brought the kitten to biologist Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz at a wildlife sanctuary. She confirmed his suspicions, immediately understanding that this wasn't any normal domestic cat. She started genetic testing, and finally found out that this kitten was a new species entirely. The first new species to be discovered in nearly 100 years!

You might be imagining that Leopardus tilcayo is some meowjestic, gigantic wild cat, thanks to the "Leopardus" in the beginning of its name. But, we have the cutest news to tell you - it's actually smaller than your average house cat. Approximately 3 lbs. Just for reference, one of my cats weighs around 5 lbs, and she's very small. My other one weighs around 9 lbs. (he is a bit chonky, though).

How can cats sleep so peacefully with their head one way, their legs another way, and their spine twistier than a pretzel? Because they are cat (and they are also part liquid).

I remember my first expurrience finding my cat sleeping in a position that looked like someone threw her body parts in a blender (figuratively, of course), and she came out looking like some sort of misshapen pretzel. I was sure that she had gotten herself stuck somehow and could barely breathe because her spine was so contorted that her lungs must be collapsing. I rushed to her, only to realize she was sleeping deeper than baby, and woke up on my arrival with the sweetest chorus of meows and chirps. She unfolded her feline body as if nothing happened, then curled up on my lap and fell back asleep. I was shocked.

Over the years, I found her in increasingly funny positions. Sleeping, sunken in between couch cushions, relaxing with her two front legs dangling off the ends of the couch, and even falling asleep on top of the metal radiator, with her fluff sinking in between the uncomfortable metal ridges. She was the one who taught me that cats are part liquid, and can turn their bones into noodles. Figuratively, of course.

Now, as a seasoned cat owner, instead of rushing to save them from whatever position they've found themselves in, I rush to take out my camera and snap a quick pic. What new, nefariously noodle-like position will I find them in next? What unexplainable pose will they find "comfortable" enough to fall asleep in? The awwpportunities are endless, and each new configuration of cat brings me unbridled joy and a silly smile to my face.

That's why, on purrticularly bad days, I like to look at photos that people take of their cats in ridiculous positions. Some look as flabbergasted as we feel, some are purrfectly content, and others are so sound asleep that you'll look at them and think "How is that even pawssible?" Unlike the other kids, Sloth from 'The Goonies' didn't scare us. We loved his smooshy face from the very beginning and could tell that he had a heart of gold underneath those scars. Turns out that Pinocchio, AKA Pokee, is the exact same way.

Everybody always wants to adopt the cute kittens first. Then, they'll go for the cats that are "special," like those with rare and unique fur patterns, followed by color preferences (orange, white, calico, tortoiseshell, black, etc.). Some sparse people will then go for the regulars - the standard-issue cats and the young adults who still have plenty of feline future ahead of them. But where does that leave the sweet senior kitties and the cats with special needs?

Caring for a special-needs cat is not something that fits into everyone's lifestyle. It can be tough. They require more frequent visits to the vet and they might require a bit of help to live a "normal" life, but it's 100% worth it. When I used to scroll through the I Can Has Cheezburger community's output of lolcats every week I would think to myself it's a shame it can't get more exposure. At first, all you see is concrete and darkness, and you hear a kitten meowing from afar. Then a flashlight spots the kitty, who is trapped on the bridge ledge, crying, with no way to climb down on his own. Someone has to get him out of there.

No one can just walk over and pick him up. The space between the little kitten and the pavement is enormous. We can see how much work it will take to get close enough to scoop him up. Luckily, a rescue team gets to work.

A man puts on a helmet and harness and works his way toward the kitten. Ropes support him above the road while he holds another rope to guide the kitten out of the walls where he is stuck in order to save him. Watching the kitten hanging from that rope is a little terrifying because the fact that he can fall is scary, but these workers were calculating every movement very carefully. The man reaches him, and the closing scenes show the kitten in his rescuer's arms on the street. The sight of someone holding him is a relief.

How he ended up there is what we don't know and what we will never know. It's scary to think that he fell there, and I can imagine the desperation after realizing it was impossible to climb back to the street. Poor kitten may have been really confused when he fell.

A few moments before being rescued from that bridge, the world seemed a hopeless place for this tiny cat. Now, his tiny life was given a second chance. He is ready to grow up loved and cared for in a home. Away from the street. Away from the loneliness. After that much panic, the kitten really deserves a quiet and warm place to sleep. I'm glad the rescuers decided he was worth all of the planning, the equipment, and the effort to get him somewhere safe. I'm glad there are people out there willing to spend their time on one frightened kitten.

We have already established that cats are elegant creatures, but we never actually talk about that part of their purrsonality…

Lately, we've been talking a lot about cats and flooding the internet with photos of them looking cute or doing one of their shenanigans, but we are forgetting that, other than pawdorable and naughty, they are really elegant. They carry themselves with such grace when they want to that they seem to belong on a runway. You know when you see someone down the street and think, "That person could wear a salmon on their head, and they would still look good"? Well, that's pretty much what happens with cats. Although, putting a salmon on their heads will result in one big dinner and quite the sad photoshoot, so we better stick to little dresses and bow ties.

I don't know what it is about them that they can look flawless all the time. Even when they are running all around the house, chasing an invisible mouse or something, they look great. From one moment to another, they stop running and sit on top of a chair or any surface, for that matter, and they look so regal that it makes us feel unworthy of their presence. Keep in mind that we're talking about the same cat that five seconds ago was falling out of the laundry basket. Somehow they manage to keep their dignity intact. If I start running and then stop abruptly, I look like I've just been hit by a truck. It's so not fair for us, mere hoomans. But we have to accept it; they have a type of flawless grace we will never have.

The older I get, the more I realize that cats are magical beings. All animals in general, but there's something special about cats… something I wasn't able to find in other animals. For me, this is a huge thing! I've always considered myself to be a big dog person, and was never a fan of felines. But now, I'm more inclined toward them, and I really would like to dive into their mind and how they live, because something is fascinating about a cat's philosophy. Let me share a very recent story that happened to me this past weekend.

On Sunday, it was my birthday. Since my boyfriend was travelling and my parents live far away from me, I faced the fact that I was going to be alone. So, I decided to book a weekend getaway and discover a new place. So, I booked a nice hotel and went to the mountains, my favourite place on Earth. For my birthday, I did a hike, and it was very crowded. The funny part that it was full of dogs, so I was happy about that. After the first couple of miles, I ended up being alone on the trail and saw a little cat that was playing with a bush.

He was small and grey, and seemed thirsty, so I gave him some of my water. He had big blue eyes… he was the absolute cutest. After he drank and showed his lovely appreciation, I continued with my walk… but the little buddy decided to join me! This was crazy to me: aren't cats supposed to be more independent? Anyways, we ended up completing the walk together, and I assumed he must be hungry… Instead of leaving him there, I entered a supermarket and bought him some cat food. I came out, gave him the food, and he slowly thanked me, and then he left.

I assume that he didn't want to be adopted; otherwise, he should have stuck with me, right? Cat people, please confirm.

Anyways, thanks to that little buddy, I wasn't alone on my birthday.

Some former feral cats take their sweet time deciding whether hoomans can be trusted, but once they do, you might just end up with the biggest cuddle bug around.

Iggy first appeared back in January during what his future family now calls his "outdoor era." He had grown up around a neighborhood and was familiar with people, but getting anywhere near him was another story. Pets were absolutely off the table, and Iggy preferred keeping a safe distance from those suspicious two-legged creatures.

His future pawrent started feeding him and slowly earning his trust. In March, Iggy was TNR'd, and over the next couple of months, things really started changing. By May, the formerly skittish feline was approaching for pets, sitting on laps, and even letting his favorite hoomans pick him up. Talk about a glow-up.

Then June brought a problem: the family was moving.

They tried gradually reducing Iggy's meals, but apparently nobody had informed him about this plan. He kept showing up at their door asking for dinner, and leaving him behind became impossible. Rather than risk relocating him outdoors somewhere unfamiliar, they decided to give indoor life a shot.

The first few days were a little shaky, but Iggy figured out the litter box and began settling into his new surroundings. There was also the small matter of the family's three resident cats, including one particularly territorial feline who has an entire floor to himself.

Luckily, Iggy found himself a friend. He quickly bonded with one of the boys, and the pair are now besties.

These days, Iggy is confident, comfortable, and apparently very happy with his retirement from outdoor life. That cautious neighborhood cat who once wouldn't accept a pet is now cuddling on the couch with the hooman who spent months earning his trust.

We'd say Iggy's indoor era suits him pretty darn well.

Compassion comes in many ways, and sometimes it shows in continuously rescuing cats.

Some people have one cat, and that's enough for them. I'm such a person. My wife and I tried to bring in a second cat, a young kitten to keep her company, but it ended up with him taking charge in the house while she hid under the blanket for days. So we decided that this was a foster - we took care of all his medical conditions (and there were plenty, since we rescued him from a nearly abandoned village), and then found him a forever home with a nice lady from a nearby city. He was a black kitten, so she named him Salem, and sent us updates on how happy he grew to be. And my cat, Cassie? She continues to be our one and only queen of the house.

But some people can't stop at one cat, and that's honestly understandable. And I'm not talking about just accumulating cats like candy; I'm talking about rescuing as many cats as one can possibly afford. And that's what Sarah Carolyn did - she rescued no less than nine cats, all of whom are otherwise highly unlikely to get adopted, due to various medical necessities and trauma from harsh pasts. I don't think I could ever do that in my current living situation, but I definitely adore people who do. So kudos to her, that's ameowzing.

My one and only cat is also a rescue. She was found by my classmate when I was a student. She lived in the student dorms, so there was a strict no-pet policy, so she looked for a person to adopt the tiny thing (she was a month old at the time). And it just so happened that I was looking to adopt a cat right at that moment. My classmate was an amazing foster - she did all that she could, all under the noses of the dorm security, until I could pick her up. When she was about a month and a half old, she came home with me. She celebrated 7 last month. My soul cat that's always with me.

My cat found me when I needed her the most, and I can't imagine life without her.

Mia, my beautiful, chonky, kind 11-year-old cat, changed my life, and I am forever thankful to her. One day, back when I was 17 years old, going through one of the worst periods of my life, this itty bitty kitten found me. It was Independence Day, it was dark out, she followed me home, and I wasn't planning on adopting a cat. But as every cat owner knows, cats adopt their humans, not the other way around, and Mia chose me.

I've always been a cat person, but I did not grow up with pets, and neither did my parents. I never thought I had the knowledge or the skills to have a cat. But this little one believed in me, and she was not going to take no for an answer. The moment I adopted her, my life changed. Every day was suddenly a little brighter. There was always something to smile about.

Living with an actual cat taught me so much - about cats, about myself. I've been with her nearly every day for the past 11 years. In fact, she's sitting next to me as I type this. She has been with me through everything.
