One ordinary drive home turned into the rescue of a lifetime.

Every now and then, Reddit's r/CatDistributionSystem subreddit delivers a rescue story that feels too unbelievable to be real. Rusty's journey began on the Fourth of July with what looked like a tiny gray cloud tumbling out from underneath the car ahead. In a matter of seconds, one couple's drive to a family party became something they'll remember for the rest of their lives.

The first thought wasn't that it was a kitten. It looked more like a squirrel that had been hit and was rolling across the road. Then the little gray bundle stood up and ran for the shoulder. The couple managed to stop in time, pulled over immediately, and rushed to see if he had survived.

Somehow, he had. Aside from a small scrape on his lip, the kitten escaped without any broken bones or serious injuries. It's hard to believe after everything he had just been through, but he walked away with little more than a close call and a chance at a completely different life.

The couple named him Rusty, a nod to the Lithuanian words rasti ("to find") and rastas ("found"). It couldn't have been more fitting. They didn't leave home expecting to meet a kitten that day, and Rusty certainly didn't plan on finding his family in the middle of a busy road. Yet their paths crossed at exactly the right moment.

One decision to pull over changed everything. Rusty went from clinging to survival on the side of the road to being welcomed into a home where he'll never have to fend for himself again. The holiday plans may have changed, but it's safe to say this Fourth of July came with a much better story than anyone at the party was expecting.

After adopting a pair of meowjestic Maine coons, our cat dad from Reddit's r/cats community is wondering if his new kitty's previous diagnosis is actually true. One of the pair, Yuki (the foofy, white cloud of a cat), was deaf, according to his previous pawrents. However, now that Yuki is in his new dad's house, he has seen him reacting to certain sounds. I always love a good dad joke. Especially when the dad joke is a literal cat name. I know that some people have a hard time naming their cats, so they end up with names like Cookie Jar Jar Binks, Elephant the III, or Rafi the Refrigerator. Cat naming is a meme in and of itself - take these four kittens with Hobbit names, for example. It's delightful. I also have a cat with a geeky name - she might be just Cassie, but if anyone asks, she's Cassandra Pentaghast (from Dragon Age). But I absolutely lose it when a cat's name is a complete joke. I love it.

That's exactly why I laughed so much finding out that @pizzaandluna's cat is named Pizza, after crying a little - because every abandoned kitten who's adopted makes me tear up. Having cats and babies in the same home is difficult, but cats are always babies.

I have a confession to make - since I had my daughter, my cat seems to distance herself slowly. I feel like I'm dealing with a classic situation of an older sibling who has to adjust to a new baby in the family. And I understand my cat - I was also an only child until a few years later when my younger sister came along. And I've been asking myself lately one question many times - how do I make sure my cat knows she's my baby? Because cats are always babies for their pawrents, and nothing will change that. For me, at least. But I'm sure many others can relate.

My daughter is cute and amazing, and… so is my baby. My cat is my daughter, the first one. And I love both the same. But my cat always was, and always will be, my baby. Ever since she was a literal one-month-old kitten, saved from a stray cat mama abandonment, to now - when she's an older sister. Usually, when we get chosen by the CDS, it doesn't leave any room for interpretation. We know we were chosen. When my kitten followed me home on Independence day, I knew I was chosen. When my husband's cat walked into his home on his birthday, he knew he was chosen. When this man's cat flew in through his window, it fell directly into his lap. But when the kitten on r/CatDistributionSystem walked into the home of her new owners, they… weren't quite sure that it was them she was after.

And it's their own fault, really. When my kitten followed me home, I never told her that I didn't want her. I didn't dare. She chose me as her human, and I accepted it. They told this kitten that they didn't want a cat, and she heard them, and she said: "Yeah, I'm not looking for a human either." Because the CDS doesn't always pair humans with cats. It's the cats who choose their humans, not the humans who choose the cats. Seriously. Ask a cat owner. Chances are that the story they will tell you will be a lot sillier.

My cat followed me home randomly on Independence Day. My husband's cat randomly walked into his apartment on his 25th birthday. My best friend's two cats are ones that she found on the streets near her apartment, alone, sick, and in desperate need of help. For most of us… It just kind of happens. One day, we don't have a cat. The next day, our lives are completely changed.

Divorces are hard for cats too, but normally, they at least get to stay with one human. For both partners to abandon their cat is just… cruel.

Adopting a cat as a couple is an amazing experience. The cat is something that you both love, that you bond over, that makes you stronger together, that maybe even prepares you for other itty bitty creatures you will grow together. But it also comes with a risk. If the relationship ends, what do you do? Where does the cat go? Who gets to keep the cat? We've heard of custody battles over cats before. They're terrible, but they do happen, and they do end, and the kitty gets to go home with at least one of its humans. We have never heard of both sides of the divorce abandoning their cat.

The kitty in this video wasn't just abandoned by her owners in their divorce. She was old, sick, and in need of help and love. In retrospect, looking at the state she was in, it's almost easy to say that them giving her away was better for her. She was neglected at home, dehydrated and unloved. It was pure luck that she was brought to this shelter - to a human who actually cared about he, because the couple who gave her away simply put her up for free on Facebook Marketplace. Any adopter would have done - just to take her off their hands. Honestly, they didn't deserve her.

People adopt cats for all different reasons. Companionship, love, because they're cute, on a whim, they receive them as a gift, or they simply inherit them. But, no matter what the reason, if you don't want to care for the cat fully, to make sure it lives a safe and healthy life, then please, give it to someone who will. No cat deserves to be forced to survive outdoors and only get your love and care when you want. That's not pet ownership. A cat is a commitment, and they deserve 100% of your love 100% of the time.

If you adopt a cat and make it live outside, like our matted "stray" from Reddit's r/straycats community, then you're not giving it the life it deserves. A neighbor noticed them wandering around outside for months, but it wasn't until a caring couple took them in, assuming they were a stray. So when they took the cat into the vet to check for a microchip, they were shocked to find out they had one. And even worse, the original owners wanted them back.

Thankfully, our stray from Reddit's r/catadvice subreddit found a heartwarming hooman to save her during the inescapable 100-degree heatwave. For the first few days, she was calm, even enjoying her newly found indoor life, until all of a sudden, she started meowing like crazy. Meowing so much that it started disturbing her new hooman's other pets. Unable to get her to a vet, and knowing she couldn't release her back outside, the two just had to wait it out, until it became purrfectly obvious why she was in distress: she was about to give birth to six kittens.

Life is full of puns, silliness, serendipity, and symbolism if you let it. Of course when this couple from Reddit's r/CatDistributionSystem goes out for catfish they come home with a real cat. The couple was visiting family from out of state for the holiday weekend, 4th of July that is. They decided to go out catfishing because it's free fishing day due to the holiday. On the way there, they found a little grey kitten running around the dock. She was so cute and trying to get at the catfish bait because it was raw chicken with Jell-O mix on it. They gave her some to try and she was clearly very hungry, so she was more comfortable to approach them. She got within a foot of the couple, but they didn't want to scare her off so they didn't try to grab her. They didn't want to risk accidently letting her go, because they felt a kinship with her. They left, but returned the next day with a crate and wet food. They did end up getting her to voluntarily go into the crate to get the food. Within ten minutes of bringing her back she was letting the nice couple pet her and was even trying to play with them. She seems healthy though she's a woodsy kitten and has been all by herself. They're going to adopt her and the first thing is the vet visit.
