It's true. There are times in life where something happens that we can't quite put our finger on, but we know it's meaningful. Take the story from Reddit's r/CatDistributionSystem for example. The woman lives in an area with a lot of stray cats, so we're starting there. The home she lives in wasn't taken care of so well before her, and there are some cracks places that need fixing. Due to these issues, it's actually quite easy for a cat to sneak itself inside. And that's exactly what happened. It all happened one night; she heard meowing one night around 3 in the morning and it sounded like it was coming from inside the house. She looked and looked but couldn't find anything. Then after looking for 15 minutes or so, she started hearing the meowing again. She took off the vent cover to her bedroom and then suddenly this little kitty pops its head out a few minutes later.

She tried her hardest to tempt the kitten with food, but she wouldn't budge. Then she decided to get creative: she recorded the cat meowing and played it back to her, making her think there was another cat there and sparking her curiosity. This is where we introduce "Bernadette", the three-legged mama cat who met her hooman on a casual trip to PetSmart for cat litter. Bernadette was too scared to come out from her hiding spot underneath her bed. The employees told the woman that she was adopted, and then returned after only 3 days. That's not all Bernadette went through. In addition to the injury that left her legless, she also birthed four kittens (thankfully, all of them got adopted) and went through a rough time before she was turned in to PetSmart. With all the goodness in her heart, the woman couldn't resist taking Bernadette home to give her the second chance she so desperately deserved.

We love all cats, but cats like Bernadette pull at our heartstrings a little more than others. She didn't deserve to live the life she had to. Being thrown around from family, to outside, to a shelter, back to a family, then back to a shelter. Being a first-time cat owner can be very intimidating. You have so many new things to buy and everything to prepare for a new feline friend entering your home. The first thing you need to understand is that, soon enough, it will be their home. But until you get to that point, you have a lot of uncomfortable time where you and your new cat are figuring each other out. In the best-case scenario, your cat waltzes into their new home and immediately feels safe to explore. In the worst case, it can take months for your cat to start to come out of hiding.

Every cat is different, but most cats are likely to follow the 3-3-3 rule. They need 3 days to decompress (we all know that cats are not good with change), 3 weeks to learn their new routines (imagine moving in with a new roommate that doesn't speak your language - it takes time to get to know each other!), and 3 months to start to feel comfortable showing off their purrsonality.

So when our cat pawrent wrote in Reddit's r/CatAdvice subreddit about his cats still hiding from him after 5 days, we couldn't help but chuckle because of how cute it is. This purrson was so worried that their new cats didn't like them when they simply just weren't given enough time to process their new environment. Patience is key as a feline pawrent, and this is the first step to learning how to deal with cats' (many) boundaries.

There may not be a training manual, but there is a whole internet full of cat lovers with plenty of expurrience in raising cats. Thanks to our wholesome and loving kitty community, these newly adopted cats got saved from getting rehomed, and our inexperienced pawrent learned their first valuable lesson in pawrenthood: the pace of your life is now dependent on a tiny, fuzzy creature that bosses you around. A mail carrier was going about their normal route when a tiny kitten emerged from the bushes and immediately decided they were the chosen human for the job. The kitten refused to leave their side, creating the kind of heart-melting situation that every cat lover secretly dreams about.

Unfortunately, the timing wasn't ideal. The mail carrier was still within their 90-day probation period and couldn't take the kitten home, no matter how badly they wanted to. As difficult as that decision was, help arrived at exactly the right moment.

A woman walking her dog spotted the kitten and instantly fell in love. She was so excited that it was obvious this little furball had already won her over. Mittens is a survivor, and part of us believes she fought so hard to stay alive so that she could spend her remaining years with the family that loved her from the beginning.

It's never an easy choice to rehome a pet. We'd like to believe that everyone always does it for the "right" reasons, but the reality is that most times, they don't. Orange cats hold a special place in our hearts. They may be the most chaotic of our feline brethren, but they are also some of the sweetest cats we've ever met. Our second cat was an orange boy, named Cheeto, and we loved him from the second we saw him until his very last breath. Every day, we came home to some sort of disaster, from toilet paper being shredded, to even finding him with his head stuck in the wall (he made the hole, and then got stuck in it). Our lives with Cheeto were never boring, and looking back on it, we're purrfectly grateful for all of his shenanigans. Why? Cornbread, our orange cat below, did not get dealt the same hand of cards that Cheeto did. He got in quite a bit of trouble, even getting a nasty mouth infection that left him hungry, in pain, and confused. One year later, Cornbread finally got what he's been craving this whole time: a family that loves him. From the moment he arrived, Bigfoot was incredibly affectionate and comfortable around people.
