We spend so much time debating whether artificial intelligence is making our world less human that we sometimes forget to treat each other like human beings ourselves.

Sarper Duman is a good person, a true friend to the cat community, and he does not deserve the criticism he is facing.

Back in 2017, Sarper was already caring for 9 rescued street cats in Istanbul. By 2019, that number had grown to 19, and he started to really gain some meowmentum with his online presence. He went viral for videos of his cats curled up beside him while he played the piano, or playing with him. Soon enough, millions of people were invested in his feline family. It was so heartwarming to watch from afar! Finally, a good thing is happening to a good purrson. It felt right.

Fast forward to today, and things have taken a heartbreaking turn. After losing his beloved cat Reşat, Sarper shared an AI-generated music video. Besotted with grief, he did not have the finances or mental strength to produce a real music video, so he generated something in order to save money and hopefully raise more money for the remaining cats under his care. The response was nothing like what he hoped for.

While still grieving Reşat passing over the rainbow bridge, he faced a wave of harsh criticism over his decision to use AI. In one post. After thousands of posts over nearly 10 years that were based on making the world a better place. On September 13th, he announced that he was stepping away from Instagram. And honestly, I think this deserves a much bigger conversation.

If there's something that's fascinating to me about cats is the fact that they can be poured. I'm really amazed by those flexible cats that can transform their bodies and adapt them to where they want to lie down. Twelve years ago, a kitten's desperate screams in the middle of a rainy night led one cat lover straight to a tiny roadside rescue they'd never forget.

One cat lover was walking home in the rain at 1 a.m. when they heard a kitten screaming somewhere in the darkness ahead. There was no way they were going to keep walking.

Having grown up with cats, they knew this wasn't the usual kitten calling for mom. They followed the cries until they spotted movement beside a lamp post, only about 20 centimeters from the road and right near a blind corner. We don't even want to think about what could have happened if nobody had heard him.

The second they picked him up, the screaming stopped. Just like that, he was completely calm. Excuse us while our hearts melt a little.

There weren't any occupied houses nearby, and the kitten was covered in oil. His rescuer figured he may have climbed into a car before falling off near the sharp curve. Whatever happened, this little guy had clearly had enough adventure for one night, so home he went.

Waiting there was Loki, the resident 10-year-old only cat, who was initially less than thrilled about getting a surprise sibling. Luckily, he came around pretty quickly.

The kitten was named Nox, Latin for "night," after their late-night meeting. He was covered in black spots that survived his first bath, so his new hooman initially thought they were markings. More than a month later, the last spots disappeared and revealed a completely white kitty underneath, complete with a pink nose, pink ears, toe beans, and gorgeous eyes.

Now somehow 12 years have passed, and Nox is still as sweet and energetic as ever.

Who's in the mood for being purrfeclty spooked today?

If there's one thing cuter than our furbabies, it's our furbabies in a little costume. We could have it all ordered by date, like, "On October 5th, he curled up on the couch beside me," with the photo on the side. People used ot do those albums for their children when smartphones weren't a thing, so what's stopping us from doing the same for our feline children? After all, they probably are the only children we're going to have. We might as well just spoil them now, and use some of our free time for an artistic project. Those albums take quite a bit of work, and if we want it to look nice enough to be worthy of or cat's cuteness, we're going to have to put a lot of effort into it. Some cats are very cuddly. Some cats are not. And that's fine. We, as their owners, accept our cats exactly as they are. A cat who is not very cuddly coming to cuddle with you is the biggest honor. But even if your cat is a full-on velcro kitty, you should still appreciate every single time that this cat comes to cuddle with you. Because you never know how long you will have your cats for. Every moment like that with them is meowgical, even if it happens often.

It's also part of your job to encourage them. When that meowgical moment happens, when your "aloof cat" finally comes to cuddle with you, you have to let them know that not only is it okay, it's wanted. Because cats understand boundaries when it comes to personal space, and some of them will even respect these boundaries. That's what the person in today's story didn't realize. They didn't know that one mistake was enough to mess up.

At some point, without even realizing, they must have reacted in some way that made their cat believe that his owner did not want to cuddle with him. A lie. A painful lie. Family spends days searching for a tiny kitten hiding in their garage, then rescues him just weeks before their baby is due

The Cat Distribution System decided this baby needed a best friend waiting for him when he gets home.

A black kitten had been sneaking into the family's garage for a few days, and although they could hear him moving around in there, they had absolutely no idea where he was hiding. We have to give Binx credit because apparently his hiding skills are pretty impressive.

Eventually, his future pawrents got creative. They attached their indoor Ring camera to a stick and started searching around the garage with it. Sure enough, there was the little guy tucked behind a cabinet. Imagine having to conduct a full surveillance operation just to locate one tiny kitten.

Finding him was only half the battle. They still had to convince him to come out. On Labor Day, some wet food finally did the trick, and they were able to lure him out and catch him. We're not surprised. If there's one thing capable of ruining even the best feline hiding spot, it's the smell of a good meal.

His new cat mom also happens to be 36 weeks pregnant, because apparently preparing to bring home a baby wasn't keeping the household busy enough already. The CDS clearly saw an opening and decided to throw a kitten into the mix too.

They named their surprise new family member Binx, and he's wasting absolutely no time getting comfortable. He's already been hanging out in the baby's crib and keeping it warm until his future bestie arrives.

We can only imagine how cute these two are going to be growing up together. Binx got there a few weeks early, so he has plenty of time to inspect the house, test out the crib, and get settled before the baby comes home.

Who knew the guardian angels of a couple of kittens would be two fishermen far out on the water?

Some cats are truly luckier than others. But I don't know if I'd label these two orange kittens completely "lucky". They are definitely lucky to have been saved, pulled from the water as if they were baby Moses pulled from the Nile to receive a second chance in life. But I can't honestly call them "lucky", because it's obvious that the beginning of their story, before they were saved, is a harsh tale of abandonment. No couple of kittens is found in the middle of nowhere, only nature surrounds them, and they know to seek humans' help to stay alive.

Whenever I see a story of kittens abandoned in the middle of nowhere, it makes me angry, I have to admit. Because who in their right mind just throws kittens into the woods? There are so many, so many options for a person to consider before abandoning such helpless lives to their fates. Not ready for the responsibility of adoption? That's okay. But finding the kittens a forever home, or giving them to a shelter, are much better options than outright abandoning the kittens. It makes me boil just thinking of a person who takes kittens, intentionally, and drives far away to leave them in a forest, so god forbid they will also not have a chance to be found. What a heartless thing to do.

But this is where these two orange kittens from below defy the odds, and actually can be considered "lucky". They didn't just stumble across a couple of fishermen out in the open - they had the bravery, the tenacity to swim over to them while they were fishing in the middle of the water. Seriously, it takes so much courage to risk yourself like that for a second chance in life. And it's also courageous to be the one who gives this second chance. These two fishermen should win something for how they didn't even hesitate to save these kittens, in this life or the next.

Three months ago, Rhaegar and Nyx unexpectedly fell into their hooman's life, and it didn't take long for these two to completely take over.

Rhaegar, the red-collared boy, is the attention seeker of the pair. He loves being near his person and getting affection, but there are rules. Please keep your face out of his face, thank you very much. He also prefers cuddling without actually touching, unless there's a blanket separating everyone. We respect a cat who knows his boundaries.

His other great love is food. Rhaegar will happily inform his hooman that he is wasting away from starvation despite having eaten approximately .3 seconds earlier. A tale as old as time.

Nyx, meanwhile, likes affection on her own terms. She can be wary when something big approaches too quickly, but once she's comfortable, she's a serious snuggler. At night, she'll crawl right under the blankets and press herself against her hooman. Excuse us, that is ridiculously sweet.

She's also the adventurous one. Nyx is usually first to investigate somewhere new and figured out the cat door leading to their catio within a single day. No tutorial required. She's quite the little huntress too, always ready to take down any dangerous strings or evil red dots threatening the household.

Despite their differences, both cats seem pretty smitten with their person. They usually want to hang out nearby and regularly come looking for attention, but they're independent enough to do their own thing too. Sounds like a pretty great balance to us.

Their hooman says these two have changed life for the better and that leaving the house now comes with one problem: wanting to get back home to them.

I have to admit, I have a soft spot for black cats. It's not just their special history because of the ties to the fear of witches, and it's not the fact that they're most likely the last ones to stay at a shelter because of said history. It's because I have a black cat myself. She's absolutely gorgeous - her fur is short but so soft, she has three white spots on her belly, and she has striking green eyes. She's 7 years old now, and I've had her since she was a month old. She's literally my first child. I love my Cassie to bits.

Black cats are some of the most elegant kitties out there; they go with everything! Sadly, they have really bad press. People used to think that black cats were companions to evil witches, and that's why they were so afraid of them. I've always wanted to have a black cat, but I never came across one organically. We think that this is a genre that can officially be classified as a classic on ICHC. Someone who didn't want a cat falling deeply in love with the new kitten in the house and believing wholeheartedly that said kitten is the best kitten. Of course, we knew - we, meaning cat people - the meowgical powers that cats have. And they do. There is a pull when it comes to cats that is simply impawssible to ignore. It's why people like us, who have embraced being cat ladies, cannot help but stop to pet literally every single cat that we see.

My husband has started calling these moments "cat-related delays". Every time it happens when we are on the way somewhere and might be late due to the cat delay, he sends an image of me petting the stray cat to the people we're going to meet. In my personal opinion, it is a valid reason to be late to places. And most of our friends have come to expect it.

We say this all the time but you never really know where you are going to find yourself face to face with a dumped kitty. Take this story for example which somehow has a kitty who was dumped in a botanical garden. Perhaps its pawrents wanted to leave it somewhere safe, or they were hoping it would eat a toxic plant and pass away. Either way that is where our story begins.

It begins with the meeting of our heroic hooman who would come to save the cat and of course the cat itself. They instantly bonded while taking in the afternoon sun washing over the plants and petals and soon began sharing meals. Their relationship developed quickly and soon this hooman had arrange to bring a shelter for the cat so that it would have somewhere safe to spend the winter. But in that very same interaction with garden staff a surprising offer was made to this cat caring hooman.

They told them that they were welcome to take the cat home with them if they could convince it to come. Now this is were things get interesting. Most hoomans would have immediately said yes and dealt with the consequences later. Consequences which could impact the hooman just as much as the kitty. But this hooman took a step back and thought. Upon realizing that their home was not prepared properly for a cat, in that it was currently incomplete, they opted to leave the cat in the garden with the shelter until they could offer it a truly pawfect home to grow old in.

At least the cats understand.

There's a cat meme for pretty much every stage of putting something off. The confidence when you decide future you can handle it. The complete lack of urgency while you do literally anything else. The moment you check the time and realize several hours have somehow disappeared. And finally, the panic when you've waited so long that finishing the task becomes a race against the clock.

We're especially talented at finding completely unnecessary things to do during this time. Haven't cleaned behind the fridge in six months? Suddenly it seems urgent. The Cat Distribution System could not have planned this one better if it tried.

One cat lover randomly decided that this would be the day they donated to and volunteered at their local shelter. And who should arrive while they were there? A tiny kitten who had just been found on someone's porch with a dog trying to get at him. Talk about being in the right place at the right time.

The shelter believed the little guy may have been a car rider before ending up on that porch. He had a broken tail and a burned butt, which is a pretty rough start for a kitten who hadn't even made it to two months old yet. Poor baby had already been on quite the adventure.

Unfortunately, the shelter was full. The other option was a place that would have put him down because of how young he was. Yeah, no. There was no way this cat lover was going to spend the day helping shelter cats and then leave this tiny guy behind.

And just like that, volunteering turned into adopting.

His new name is Norbert Nubbins Sawyer, which is an incredible amount of name for such a tiny cat. His family apparently isn't sold on it, but we're team Nubbins. He also answers to Nubs, Nub Nub, Nubbins, and Norbert, so clearly he isn't picky. He's now seven weeks old, and his tail and little burnt butt have fully healed.

He also came home to two tuxedo siblings with very different opinions about the situation. The big boy already loves his new little brother, although he may also appreciate the extra food that appeared around the same time. We see you, sir. The little lady tuxedo hates him. Something that we have said many times in the past is that the CDS… works in meowsterious ways. I've seen it in my own personal life. My cat - my beautiful, chonky, love-of-my-life cat - was distributed to me by the system as I was walking around on Independence Day. My husband's cat followed him home out of nowhere. She just walked into his apartment. He decided to keep the door open, let her leave if she wanted, and if she didn't, he would keep her. She walked out. Five minutes later, she walked back in, and now, she's here furrever.

But it's not just personal experience. Once you write long enough about cats, you have some insane stories stored in your memory. One of them is the Starbucks barista who got handed a kitten through the drive-through window. Yep, a person pulled up with a backseat full of kittens, and that employee went home with a companion for life. Another one is the story of the kitten who adopted two golden retrievers who were out on a walk with their owner. Yes, she adopted them, not the other way around.

Turn on the sink and suddenly your cat is right there, ready for a drink. They'll hop onto the counter, stick their head over the sink, and start lapping at the stream like this is obviously how water is supposed to be served. The full bowl sitting a few feet away? Apparently that's not the same.

Every cat seems to have their own faucet technique too. Some drink neatly from the stream without getting a drop on themselves. Others shove their entire face into the water and come away with a soaking wet head. We're not sure how much water actually makes it into their mouth, but they seem happy with the arrangement.

Then there are the cats who learn that the hooman controls the faucet. Once they figure that out, you're in trouble. They'll sit in the sink and wait for you, meow until you get the hint, or stare directly at the tap like they're trying to turn it on with their mind. Sorry, hooman, your services are required.

We can't really blame them for preferring the fresh stuff. Running water is fun to watch, fun to smack with a paw, and apparently pretty fun to drink too. Some kitties will even stop for a few playful swats before remembering they came over for a drink.

Cats and cardboard boxes are a combination we will never get tired of.

In late August of this year, a staff member from the Gwinnett Stripers rescued a smol orange kitten from a traffic accident. The Stripers, which are the Triple-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, decided to adopt him. But he didn't just get adopted by a staff member, he got adopted by the whole team!

But that's not all we're here to talk about. ChipPurr has found himself as a star on social media yet again! Yesterday, ChipPurr made his big-league-style debut during the Stipers' pet supply donation night, called "Purr in the Park." Two kitties facing life one day at a time.

My cat is one of the most important things in my life, and here's my story.

I got him back in 2021. I had just moved, I had new roommates, new apartment, and I was starting a new life. I had briefly discussed with my roommates about getting a cat together, and they agreed. There was no cemented plan that we talked about, and both of their birthdays were coming up. I took a chance and decided to surprise them with a cat. I found him posted on a Facebook page for fostered animals needing a furrever home. I barely read any description, I didn't think twice, I just messaged a girl and told her I want him and am going to pick him up. The next day, I had a 5 month old kitten in my bedroom figuring out what life is going to be together.

My roommates came home and I told them I had a birthday surprise for them. I opened the door to reveal a kitten! A stripped, long, green-eyed kitten named Ty. And the rest is history.

The last 5 years together he's played such a crucial role in my life. He's always my safe space, he's always loving and makes me be more responsible. We have said this for the longest time, of course, but we will reiterate because we think it's appropriate at this moment. One day, without a doubt, we will end up on the news for trying to pet something that we should not have. At least I will. As someone who gets irrationally excited about every single cat, wild and housecat, and also as someone who gets jealous of every other person who gets to have a bond with a big cat that we can't have… yes, I'll end up on the news for trying to pet a lion or something.

Why do some people get to be part of a lion pack and I cannot? Why do some people choose their profession so early on that they can help raise cheetahs and then have bonds with them for life? Why couldn't I? These are questions that I ask myself every time I see something like that. And so if I were these people in this story, who somehow came across a drowning wild cat in the ocean and got to save it, then yes, I, too, would have petted that big cat. When life gives you lemons… you must accept that you may have lost a finger or two in the process and then make that lemonade.

And hey, what they did might have been dangerous, but we hope that every one of us would have done the same. Maybe the petting was overboard, but they did save this wild cat, and that is what matters at the end of the day.

If you steal a cat that no one technically owns, is it really stealing?

I've always been someone who follows the rules. I was a straight-A student, I always recycle, and I will read the directions at least three times through before even starting anything new. I like rules - they give order and if you follow them, you'll usually find yourself in a better place than those who don't. But all of those morals go in the trash as soon as I see someone not treating a cat with the love they deserve.

The sad truth is that many people don't think of cats as creatures with feelings or souls, so they allow themselves to ignore their suffering. That results in cats getting left behind when their families move, getting abandoned on the side of the highway, or not giving them the medical care they need because they're "just a cat."

This is where our story today starts: a purrson tending to their loan horse noticed a pregnant cat in distress near their barn. All but skin and bones, the horse-lover asked around, and learned that the cat "belonged" to a farmer nearby, but refused to let her inside, or even spay her because it was "unnatural".

Unable to look the other way, they took the cat to the emergency vet to get her the care she needed. The vets assured her that, if the farmer came to claim the cat (do you think he will actually come?), he would have to not only pay for all the veterinary care, but he would also have to get her spayed, as it's a requirement for all cat owners in their area.

This poor cat did not deserve to survive like this. I chose the word "survive" because that's probably all she could do for so long. But now, she will have her kittens, hopefully find her furrever family, and live happily ever after.

Just like snowflakes, every cat is unique. Most differences are small and only noticeable to their owners, but you could pick out all these cute kitties below from a mile away.

I've seen more cats than most people will in a lifetime. I was raised with cats as pets, adopted cats as an adult, and every day I go to work and look for funny and cute cats on the internet. I've been doing that for years, so you can imagine how many felines I've seen up until now as a 36-year-old cat dad (please don't call me old).

But you know what? Cats still surprise me to this day. It feels like I could write and research cats my entire life and I would always find something new - and that's partly because the world is getting bigger (metaphorically) and cat genetics are wild. The way their genes determine their coat colors and patterns is something I would happily go back to school and study in depth for years. As a result, you constantly get cats with unique and rare fur patterns and markings. It's simply beautiful to see.

I'm not just talking about the different tiny details between my SID (standard issue cat) and yours, I'm talking about cats with "mustaches," cats born with little bowties or with a single, straight line all the way from their heads to their tails. All these fluffy, fabulous felines below are unique in their own special way, and it's pretty obvious how. But what matters most is that, no matter how different they are, they're all still beautiful, and all deserve to live their best lives ordering us hoomans around until their very last breath.

The Cat Distribution System apparently had this entire family planned out years before anyone else knew what was going on.

Back in 2012, the future cat pawrent was a teenager attending a French-language high school. March 30 happened to be a day off for Francophonie Day, so instead of getting up at 6 a.m. for school, they slept in and made plans to meet a friend around noon. The weather was nice, so they decided to walk instead of taking their usual bus. Already, the CDS was pulling some strings.

Along the way, they passed a woman carrying a box of kittens. She put the box down for just a second to lock her door, and one kitten immediately jumped out and ran straight toward them. They had grown up with dogs and had never even owned a kitten before, but apparently this tiny feline had already made the decision for them.

The woman explained that her cat had given birth and she couldn't keep all the kittens. Since this particular baby had already made a beeline for her chosen hooman, she offered to let them take the kitten home.

And that's how Philip joined the family. They later discovered that "he" was actually a girl, and Philip eventually became Philippa.

But the CDS was thinking way further ahead.

A year later, Philippa gave birth on her pawrent's bed. While they were sleeping in it. Imagine going to bed with one cat and waking up to an entire litter. One of those kittens was Bastet, who is now 13 years old and, according to her hooman, a very spoiled brat.
