Do you like to collect old sauce jars? And, are you running to buy that last minute mother’s day gift? Well, I have a great idea that combines both situations. This will save you time and money. All you will need is some acrylic craft paint and a couple of clear glass pasta sauce jars. But don’t worry if you don’t have these jars, you can also use mason jars that can be obtained at Jo-Ann store and The Container Store.

The clear glass pasta sauce jars I selected had some interesting details which make them my favorite ones. If you have some jars that still have the label, here are some nice tricks to remove them.

Select the colors you want to used for this project. I’m using sea inspired colors since we are near the Summer season. These colors are from the Martha Stewart Crafts collection which you can buy at your nearest Jo-Ann store. Here is the list of colors I used:

Cloud 32022

Beach glass 32012

Green curry 32005

Wedding cake 32076

Couscous 32066

With these colors at hand, I started pouring small parts of the paint. I tried to let the paint dripped from the bottom to the top (turning the jar upside down) and then, from the top to the bottom. After most of the area was covered, I pour on a spray bottle a solution of water and vinegar (1:5) and started spraying the inside of the jar. This helped the paint to slide better on the glass surface and also for it to have a watercolor consistency.

When I finish spraying the inside of the jar, I let it rest over a paper towel. To speed the drying time, I used a hairdryer. Here is the final result. A neat and colorful plant vase (of flower) for mom. Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers visiting I don’t know how she does it!

There are so many lamps out there that one can start mixing bathroom ones with the bedroom light. Here I’ve detailed some basics for each room in your home. But before you start lighting everything like a Christmas tree, read the three types of lighting that should always be present in all areas.

On every room in your house, there should be three basic types of lighting whenever possible. These are:

General or ambiance lighting: This provides the overall and general illumination to any room with a comfortable brightness. It can be a chandelier, a ceiling mounted, recess or track lights.

Task lighting: This kind of illumination helps you to perform a particular task such as: reading, cooking, doing homework, etc. For this type of lighting one could use recess or track lights, under cabinet lamps or pendant lamps. Also, floor and table lamps are very useful; for example beside your favorite reading sofa.

Accent lighting: Have you ever had a painting that somehow doesn’t seem to capture your eye? Use an accent lamp! This type of illumination helps to draw the visual interest to an area. Either if it is a master piece, sculpture, or collectibles; make it a focal point by using wall sconces, wall-mounted picture lights, track or recess lights all directed to the object.

Lets see how one can implement these types of lighting in several areas around the house. Here is the legend with the colors:

Entryway lighting

A well illuminated entryway, instantly gives the visitor a warm welcome. To make the most out of this area, use a chandelier on the center of the entryway which will be your general light and it will create an ambient. Combine this with a task light above a console or small table and if you have wall art, illuminate it with a picture light.

Living room lighting

This area should be well lit since it is mostly a high traffic one were the family tends to gathered. To create harmony, a general light should consist of a centered lamp or a ceiling fan with a light kit. These lamps will be working in combination with floor lamps (for tasks such as reading) and accent lighting like recess or track lights that can be directed over a wall art or a display of collectibles.

Dining room lighting

Here, everything happens over the dining table. With that being said, the area to be illuminated should be over it. Use a chandelier or a pendant lamp. If your dining room has a sideboard, you can use a small table lamp to compliment the lighting of the room and/or accent light inside the cabinet to display your pieces.

Kitchen lighting

Kitchens should always be well illuminated. Why? Because here is the place where you need a light for cooking preparation, a good general light (to brighten all the room) and an accent light, to compliment. In the example bellow you can see that all the task lamps are in red dots. These lamps are placed on areas where there is a task to be accomplish (under the cabinets and over the island). The general lighting is in yellow dots (in this case, recess lamps) and the accents are in blue. These accent lamps can be use to illuminate inside the cabinets but also framed art in your walls.

Bedroom lighting

For bedrooms you should always use, in the general lighting, a dimmer switch to generate a calm environment and to adjust the brightness of the room at different times of the day. The side table lamps are used for reading (task lighting) but try using a shaded one to prevent eye tiredness. Accent lamps can be used to illuminate wall art by using track lights which can be redirected.

Bathroom lighting

For day to day use, try implementing wall sconces beside (at face height, for fewer odd shadows) or above the vanity mirror. These will function as your task lighting, but don’t forget to use the general illumination.

Recently I attended a Cost Plus World Market webminar in which they announced their new trends for outdoor decoration. For me, a seminar through the internet was a new experience, and needless to say, an exciting one. From this I could notice that their selection of products was well thought-out and picked. But when it comes to kitchens, sometimes we just don’t know where to start. Here are some great and simple tips from interior designer Marc Thee on what to do when you want to make your kitchen more inviting.

Replace all fluorescent lighting with incandescent or halogen fixtures. Ideally, all kitchens should have three levels of lighting:

Overhead task lighting: Recessed cans

Under-counter task lighting

Decorative lighting: such as pendants or island lighting.

This example from Better Homes and Gardens gives us an idea on how light works on a kitchen. The yellow colored area are the overhead task lighting, the orange ones at the left are the under counter task light while the pendant above the island are the decorative. The purple area above the paint in the wall (far right) is considered to be an accent light.

Be sure to light your glass front cabinets with small puck lighting, and use glass shelves so the light carries to the bottom of the cabinet.

Because kitchens can feel a little utilitarian—especially when the counter tops are granite—add useful accessories that feel a little time-worn or antique.

Candles and antique architectural fragments add softness to this interesting blend of contemporary and traditional styles. The screen can be pushed open if the cook wishes to see the guests in the family room. Note also how the tile backsplash continues along the entire back wall to unify the breakfast room with the kitchen. The shelves in the same stain as the kitchen are an additional unifying element.

Display in the kitchen an assortment of olive oil, vinegars, and salt and pepper grinders on a big tray. The tall bottles serve to disguise the electrical outlets, so buy some larger bottles to anchor the back of the grouping.

Following these great tips for your kitchen, here are some excellent examples of modern trays and pendant lamps from… to give that final touches to this space.

The TV personality from HGTV’s The High/Low Project (with new season premier on May 8, 2012) explains the “how” to develop a design vision in this great manual. Each chapter on Sabrina Soto’s book, is a representation of a “layer” in the process of designing (color, furnishings, etc.).

Anthropologie window installation from Gort Scott at Regent Street London W1

I’ve always admired those window displays that makes you want to transform into a mannequin and live there for a while. Like for example the ones at Fifth Avenue in New York, or any of the windows of Anthropologie stores (my favorite store in the whole wide world). I’ve fancy myself thinking how creative are the artists behind the making. What were they thinking or where did they tranported their minds when doing these windows. It if just so fascinating for me to dream about these works of art. Now celebrating the art of window display and from April 16 to May 6, Regent Street London W1 will be showcasing a number of inspiring architectural installations created by some of the world’s best up-and-coming architects in partnership with RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects). On its third year, this initiative fuses cutting edge architecture with unique retail design to create a street wide outdoor exhibition. With the title “Play” as their main theme; Riba London and Regent Street, London W1 have matched the following retailers and architects for this years prestigious Regent Street Windows Project:

Banana Republic by Ushida Findlay Architects and Visitor Studio

Ferrari by Feix & Merlin

Bose by Zero Zero

Reiss by De Matos Ryan

Folli Follie by Egret West

TM Lewin by Liddicoat & Goldhill

Anthropologie by Gort Scott

Moss Bros by Delvendahl Martin Architects

Here are some great examples of this year participants:

Antropologie by Gort Scott Based on the theme of play, Gort Scott are teaming up with Anthropologie to create a playful animation of their Regent Street windows. Through the geometric arrangement of simple painted sticks, a visual trick of shifting and transformed patterns will catch the attention of passers-by. The sticks also combine to create a hedge-like structure as a backdrop for the display of mannequins.

Banana Republic by Ushida Findlay Architects and Visitor Studior Ushida Findlay and Visitor intend to create a fluid form that captures a frozen moment in time. The splash-like form exposes a wildlife scene as it meets the glazing. This form is to be constructed out of small plastic safari animal toys cast in clear resin, recalling childhood memories whilst capturing the theme of Banana Republic’s forthcoming collection of Safari.

TM Lewin by Liddicoat & Goldhill Named “High Fliers” this window display is a mix of the theme of ‘play’ with TM Lewin’s brand concept of ‘performance’, Liddicoat & Goldhill’s London skyline plays host to a cluster of serene origami balloons. Using the shirtmaker’s crisp folding and cutting techniques, fabrics in multifarious patterns & hues will be reshaped into high-flying lanterns.

Folli Follie by Egret Westet West Studio Egret West’s playful intervention takes form in a series of coalescing smoke rings, which suspend a variety of Folli Follie jewellery, watches and small accessories. The structure occupies the entirety of the window, artistically leading the eye towards the back of the shop. The receding and expanding rings create organic conical recesses that contain and focus our attention on the showcased objects.

Reiss by De Matos Ryan The aim is to create a playful and kaleidoscopic space within the depth of the window that blurs the traditional distinction between passerby and mannequin. In doing so it hopes to affect a momentary and surreal daydream, full of aspiration and reflection. The retail ‘Hall of Mirrors’ will also playfully present a periscopic insight to the otherwise typically concealed grade 2 listed interior and shop beyond. Participants both inside and out will find themselves caught in a perceptual conundrum.

Photos by Thomas Whiteside for Elle Magazine

Last week while reviewing Elle magazine, I noticed a new fashion trend. And I’m not talking about flowers or neon colors, this trend as they called it Urban Jungle, is coming to a Summer near you. I was instantly captivated by the simplicity and textures of all these pieces and decided to convert and transform this tendency into a decor statement.

To resume this hot trend, here are some key words that better describe it: burlap, olive green, khaki colors, strong fabric, wood, snakeskin, scales, pearled, scales, white.

I’ve collected a couple of great interior examples displaying some characteristics of this “out-of-the-oven” trend.

From Ashley Stark’s apartment on Elle Decor Magazine, beautiful snakeskin bench from Karl Springer. (Right) Snakeskin planter from I Want Plants. See the detail at the lower right corner or the photo, just fascinating.

For the wall, astonishing snakeskin wallpaper (left) and snake tiles (right) which come in different colors and can be combine in other forms.

And now, here is my version of a room design with some of the characteristics presented above and from Elle’s Urban Jungle trends.
The other day on one of those night shifts as a Pinterest addict; I found an interesting piece of art that left me breathless for about .753 seconds! The beautiful metal work piece is part of a studio flat in Göteborg, Sweden.

You have to love the Scandinavian taste for decoration. Their clean lines and the use of natural light is always a must. They use white, beige and black with vibrant accent colors such as red, royal blue, pine green or yellow in their surroundings. Their furniture is simple, yet very functional. If you don’t believe me, go as IKEA! If you are planning on converting an area into Scandinavian, read this article for more hints about their style. Here are the rest of the pictures via La Maison d’Anna G.

Now, back to that beautiful work of art that took my breath and sleep; I think is doable. The metal plank on the Göteborg flat seem like it’s been left to rust. I’ve been searching the web for techniques on how to make metal rust but they all seemed to involve some kind of acid (a.k.a. toxic fumes). So I found out that maybe if it is acid that makes metal rust, some lemons and vinegar should do the trick. Another thing I found out was that not all metals are easy to rust for example galvanize and stainless steel. Here you’ll find some great ideas on how to use household products to rust metal and also here.

For this project I used 12”x12” 22-GA weldable steel sheets with a mill finish. I’ve combined some of the household products mentioned on the previous links: lemons, vinegar, water and salt but I added Rust-Oleum Hammered Spray Paint (how ironic!).

The first thing I did was to set my three metal planks over plastic bags. Although I used non-toxic products, the reaction of the metal tends to tarnish the surface of the floor beneath. After this I squeezed one lemon sparingly over these planks. Rapidly, I sprayed some vinegar I had previously poured on an old spray bottle. Let this rest for a day and this is how they ended up looking.

I had to make sure the metal planks were all dry before I sprayed paint them with the Rust Oleum. When applying the color, at the same time I sprayed some water since I wanted the look of dripping liquid instead of a “blob”. To break a little the sprayed color I also drizzled a little vinegar.

I continued adding some more water, vinegar, another lemon and a pinch of salt here and there until I acquired a convincing result. This project was like making a new food recipe where you just have to keep trying until the taste is just right.

To clean the metal planks, I used vegetable oil and a soft old sponge. This got rid of many small particles left by the paint. Afterwards I wash them with dish soap and water and let them to dry.

Here is my final art all mounted on my wall. I think that for an inexpensive project like this, it turn out nicely (sadly, not like my Scandinavian masterpiece art!). What do you think?

Inspired by Spring and all its hues and textures; today I’m going to show you how to convert an everyday item like a wine tumbler into a beautiful and colorful flower vase.

In this tutorial, although I’m using some inexpensive plastic wine tumblers, any plastic or crystal vase would do just fine. Besides this all you’ll need is leftover paint (I just love how many things I’ve done with a couple of Behr paint samples), a glue gun and a brush.

The first thing to do is the outside design of the tumblers. With the glue gun I placed different sizes of glue drops and let them dry. Just remember not to burn yourself and that this type of glue dries quickly.

Materials from left to right: leftover sampler Behr paint; Martha Stewart’s chalkboard paint for the outer part of the tumbler; sponge brush and glue gun.

When the glue was completely dry, I started painting the inside of each tumbler. I pour about a 1/4 cup of paint and started twisting and turning until the inside was completely cover. To help eliminate any leftover paint inside the tumbler, I place it upside down on top of an empty can. After this I place the vase on its side in front of a fan to help with the drying time.

When the inside of each tumbler was completely dry, I started painting the outside with the Martha Stewart’s chalkboard paint. I used this paint because when dry, the resulting effect is a matte rustic one (kind like ceramic) which I just love. I gave each piece three coats of paint.

Here is the final result. As always, with a little paint, you can do tons of things.

OPAL

Last month I went to Savannah, GA in our first family road trip ever. Among many of the things I fell in love with, there were these Bodega Vino Opal Glasses from The Paris Market store. This shop is so beautiful and its merchandise (all reminiscent of old Paris and it’s flea markets) so well selected that I had to go two times to rejoice my soul. Also the staff was so nice and attentive and they even spoke French! This is one of those stores you wish to could live in. Here are a couple of pictures I took from their gorgeous displays. If you ever visit Savannah, make sure to visit them.

Now to my opal new obsession. Here are some interesting accessories I found for the home not from The Paris Market. Some are made of opal glass others are opal inspired.

Pass the mouse over each of the lamps and “click-em” to see their website! Each one of them comes from a different and interesting site. Don’t forget to visit them.

Being a Pinterest-enthusiast as I am, there is not a day when I have to remember myself that I need to take some time to make just one craft a month. But then again, when you are trying to run a blog, have a baby, an elementary school daughter and a husband; who has time to craft?!?!?! Well I do, or at least I try to.

So today I’m going to be combining two elements that has always captivated me and make it into one. Those elements are big decorative letters and, black and white photos. This easy tutorial will require you to have the following materials:

Balsa panels (the ones I used are 3/32”x4”x36”) (These panels are similar to foam but with a wood look and feel. They are very easy to cut with an X-acto knife)

X-acto knife

Printable transparency paper

Glue (I used E-6000)

I started by selecting the letter that I wanted to do, the E. I then printed it on a sheet of legal size paper and cut it to use as template. With this at hand I measure each side of the letter. These measurements are to do the frame of the letter adding a 1.5” of width. On the example below you’ll notice how I measure each side (left part of the diagram) and then to each side I added the width (right side of the diagram).

(Left) How I took each side measurement (Right) The outter side of the letter (6”) plus the width (1.5”).

After all the parts are cut, I then glue the frame according to my letter template. When it was all dry, I painted it yellow (since we are celebrating the beginning of Spring). In the meantime (while the paint dried) I printed the photo I selected on the transparency paper using an ink printer. Always make sure that the transparency you select is according to your printer because they are also available for inkjet ones.

After the yellow paint was completely dry, I placed and glued the frame letter above the printed transparency photo. To ensure both were evenly and well adhered, I put over a couple of books. The final step was to cut the excess parts of the photo from the border of the frame.

The Spring season seems to be inspiring a lot of us into making happy colorful things. This Friday I’ll have for you one of those Spring-y projects that will make even the ”Grouchiest” one smile. Today I’ve decided that, although not colorful inspired; I’ll give a new look to my rattan planter. This accessory has been with me for years and it literally had ran from corner to corner around my house. Nevertheless, it has always fulfill each of those corners by adding an accent. But the time has come for it to transform into something a little more update.

Before I start I have some great ideas on how to transform any natural fiber basket (in my case, a planter) with just a little paint an a lot of creativity. Some examples are from well-know stores, but are here to spark your imagination.

From blagh to dang!!!

Originally, my rattan planter was a dark brown color. I’ve decided that it needed to add clarity wherever I put it so, in comes my preferred color “Dolphin Fin” from Behr. Because it was so dark, I gave it three coats of paint. I have to say that I left those crannies and nooks between each branch on purpose and ended up loving that look.

After all the paint was dried, I used ScotchBlue Painter’s tape to make my design. Because of its cylindrical form, the design was a simple one. The color used for this was the Martha Stewart chalkboard paint in gray. I love how this color goes with almost everything around my house.

The final touches were given with a soft sandpaper for an old look.

The extra

This planter has always carried some sort of branch or dried plant. The latest were from Ikea. I really loved their color and how they naturally twisted. So I decided to add a little something to give them a new look. For this, I used a thin rope twirled around each one of them with a E-6000 glue. The trick was to add spaces of rope to fill in blank spots on each branch. I did not want to cover long areas at once, so I varied how long I wanted each to be. Some ended up cover 5”, others 1”. You can play with this. The idea is to create a balanced look between the branches. To secured each end, I placed some needles and waited for the rope to be completely dried.

The completed new look deserves a spotlight corner in my house. I’m very happy with the end result!
I just love everything vintage and if it comes from a flea market in Paris, better. What’s not to love about a mysterious finding in one of the Tour Eiffel’s city. Everything there seems to have a story to tell. From small buttons to giant wall mirrors. All is romantically enchanted!

Today I’m posting some incredible spaces and accessories inspired by the Paris Flea Market. After seeing all this, you’ll find yourself buying a ticket to the city of love!

Sometimes the best way to make a change in an area and to personalize it, is by incorporating an item from past decades. This technique of Mix and Match is very useful because it brings an element of surprise to any room and can sometimes be a very inexpensive way to make great changes. When trying to Mix and Match at your home keep in mind that the piece you’ve selected has an element of design (line, color, form) that echoes the surroundings. That way the item will automatically and visually belong to the rest of the room.

Today I’ve gathered a series of Chinese elements that can be use to Mix and Match in different rooms. In every set I have placed the original or antique piece followed by its modern High-end version and the contemporary “Budget-friendly”.
