StreetMapper USA Conference Announced

The event is to be organised in conjunction with partners GeoDigital and Terrametrix and will take place on 10th February 2011 at the Astor Crowne Plaza in New Orleans. In the U.S., there are approximately 4 million miles of roads, 600,000 bridges, 20,000 airports and 160,000 miles of rail infrastructure--and, according to the American Society of Civil Engineer’s 2009 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure, much of it is in substandard condition...

3D Laser Mapping's/IGI's StreetMapper to Survey Lithuanian Roads

February 02, 2010 -- The State Enterprise Transport and Road Research Institute in Lithuania has taken delivery of the latest StreetMapper system. Utilising state of the art laser scanning technology to achieve sub centimetre accurate measurements at normal traffic speeds StreetMapper will be used by the Institute’s Road Survey Division. It will be used to help evaluate the condition of the road network, plan road repair and reconstruction projects and provide additional information for economic justification of proposed works. The StreetMapper system, developed by 3D Laser Mapping and IGI, was supplied by Vilnius based Nota Bene distributors of StreetMapper for the Baltic region...

Mobile scanning drives Los Angeles closer to a new era of economic development. When the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles (CRA/LA) set out in early 2009 to develop a new pedestrian-friendly and efficient transit corridor that would link the city’s southern region with downtown, the management team had a clear vision for what it hoped to accomplish. A public agency promoting community growth and prosperity, CRA/LA has worked with numerous private investors to revitalize neglected communities in the region. The challenge for the management team, as always, was conveying its vision to investors and the communities that would be affected by the development work. Wouldn’t it be nice if the original surveys could somehow capture enough details about the corridor to make it easy for all of the stakeholders to visualize the possibilities?...

Ordnance Survey has unveiled an incredibly detailed and accurate 3D map of the English seaside resort of Bournemouth. Ordnance Survey (OS) captured every square metre of the town centre using a combination of land-based laser scanning including the mobile mapping system StreetMapper 360 and aerial laser surveying. Created from 700 million individual laser point measurements, the 3D map could represent the future of mapping and illustrates how the work of the national mapping agency could change with the adoption of laser scanning technology...

It's a familiar sight: roads are closed due to road works and surveyors doing road measurements. Besides causing traffic delays, these surveys are costly - traffic has to be managed and employees brought in to work night shifts. Add to this, the pressure to deliver new designs as quickly as possible, and the impact this has on accuracy down the line. Now, Dutch surveying specialist Geomaat has completed pre-construction surveys without the need for road closures by using the StreetMapper 360 system from 3D Laser Mapping and IGI. The measurements were taken with sub-centimetre accuracy while travelling at normal traffic speeds...

The Great Wall of China is one of the largest manmade wonders of the world, comprising many different and irregular structures. We employed airborne Lidar to produce highly accurate digital elevation models (DEMs) to identify areas requiring repair. A terrestrial laser scanner mounted on a tripod was used to improve the terrain model, especially for surfaces covered with dense vegetation. The combined use of airborne and terrestrial laser scanner produced DEMs with accuracies better than 10cm...

The current leg of his career focuses on civil transportation infrastructure, including highway and railway, and how 3D laser scanning technology can provide survey-grade accurate, on-the-fly data while keeping operators safe from the dangers of traditional roadway collection methods. This past June, he and his team proved this possible during an 11-day mapping excursion in six cities. Large-format digital cameras can fully compete with analogue mapping cameras, and for some applications their performance is better. However, methods of calibration and certification used for analogue cameras are not individually transferable as they are based on laboratory calibration, while for digital cameras the entire data-generation process has to be considered.
