And already, fans have begun lining up the comparisons with the original Black Flag to see how the two versions of the game may compare.

The short snippet shows Edward in his iconic pose, cutlasses drawn, then a scene on deck with Blackbeard and his telescope. There's a quick shot of Adéwalé mustering the crew to load the Jackdaw's cannons, before Edward takes the wheel and ship-to-ship combat begins. Kenway's original voice actor Matt Ryan can be heard too, following hints from the actor himself that he had returned to the role.

First look at Assassins Creed Black Flag Resynced gameplay.

Reveal showcase coming this Thursday.pic.twitter.com/J7RNOA81JC
— KAMI (@Okami13_) April 21, 2026

A shot featuring Edward and Blackbeard is now being pored over by fans, who have noted Resynced's vastly improved character models and lighting. Ubisoft is even having a bit of fun here, and branding the event as the full reveal for "gaming's worst kept secret."

Assassin's Creed fans will be able to tune in via YouTube at that point and see exactly what Ubisoft has in store for this freshened up version of its beloved pirate game. Already, however, today's announcement offers up one clue: Ubisoft is calling Black Flag Resynced "the iconic solo pirate adventure" — suggesting that the game's multiplayer mode is no longer included.

The project's official name, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced, was first spotted last December, when it popped up via a European ratings board listing. New story content will reportedly be added to flesh out more of hero Edward Kenway's life, though the game's modern day gameplay sections have apparently been excised — something that many fans aren't happy about.

Tune in later this week for the full reveal — and all the details here on IGN.

Tom Phillips is IGN's News Editor. No sweat. Here's everything that was announced during the livestream…

Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol

If you're looking for the details, I'm sorry to say there aren't any — all we really got was the name! — but we're told Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol will seemingly adapt the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc from the manga, and the Universe Survival arc from the anime (thanks, Polygon).

Dragon Ball Super: Beerus

The upcoming enhanced edition of the anime Dragon Ball Super: Beerus got a new Super Gekitou teaser during the Dragon Ball Super Special Panel, giving fans an "early look at the upgraded visual presentation and the intense battle between Son Goku and the God of Destruction Beerus." The trailer also teases another powerful threat on the horizon with the return of Frieza.

We were also treated to a panel boasting Masako Nozawa (voice of Son Goku), Koichi Yamadera (voice of Beerus), Jason Douglas (English dub voice of Beerus), and Akio Iyoku, executive producer of the Dragon Ball franchise,

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3

Bandai Namco had already teased that it was coming, but now it's confirmed — Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X in 2027. Described as a "completely new Dragon Ball world by Akira Toriyama," Xenoverse 3 "continues the series' legacy with a completely new Dragon Ball experience, where players choose the hero they want to become in an unexplored Dragon Ball world brought to life by the original author."

Dragon Ball Super Card Game: Fusion World and Game Game Masters

The Impact Beyond Dimensions booster pack is set to launch in July, and Story Booster 01 — which boasts 12 new cards across 85 card types — will release on August 21. The Chromatic Ascension booster pack will release towards the end of the year.

Dragon Ball Sparking! The update also includes a new costume and Super Attack for Goku (Z - End) and a new solo mode to allow players to select unlocked characters and receive EXP through "battle and events to empower their favorite characters and push them to even greater heights."

The "major expansion" will reportedly "answer community expectations and elevate the experience to new heights" with "massive" new content additions marking "the most ambitious evolution of the game to date." There'll also be a free update introducing a new battle system, too.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2: Future Saga Chapter 4

Although it was only a couple of minutes long, we did get a peek at the final DLC pack for Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 — Future Saga Chapter 4. It's set to launch in Summer 2026 (or Q3, if you're down under).

Future Saga Pack is "set to a dramatic close, reflecting on everything players have fought for, protecting history, shaping the future, and facing god-level power in a climactic final battle," Bandai Namco teased.

Interestingly, we also learned that a number of Dragon Ball-flavored mobile games like Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle, Dragon Ball Legends, and Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra will each get their own collab with Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 as we mark the game's final update, including hero skins and emotes based on Xenoverse 2 will be added to the game. But there were some surprises in there, too - in true BAFTA style. Ghost of Yōtei winning best music over Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, for example, came as something of a shock. Daredevil star Charlie Cox didn't get the chance to big up the Fench motion capture performer behind Clair Obscur's Gustave (something he almost certainly would have done had he won best performer in a supporting role). That went to Jeffrey Wright, who played Chase in Dispatch. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 lost out to Kingdom Come: Deliverance II in the best narrative category, and to Microsoft's South of Midnight in the New Intellectual Property category, too.

Sandfall Interactive won't be too down, however; the French studio won best Debut Game, and Jennifer English, fresh from her big The Game Awards 2025 win, continued her run by taking home the best Performer in a Leading Role award for her performance as Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. And, of course, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won the biggest award of the night: Best Game. I'm not sure there was ever going to be another winner.

Elsewhere, Rebellion's Atomfall won British Game, Hello Games' No Man's Sky won Evolving Game, and Embark's Arc Raiders won Multiplayer.

A huge congratulations to the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 team who take to the stage to accept the BAFTA for Best Game at the #BAFTAGamesAwards with @GooglePlay🌟 pic.twitter.com/DyTQifTlam
— BAFTA Games (@BAFTAGames) April 17, 2026

Jennifer English walks away with the BAFTA for Performer in a Leading Role at the #BAFTAGamesAwards with @GooglePlay🏆 pic.twitter.com/ktIx4mMhCi
— BAFTA Games (@BAFTAGames) April 17, 2026

The team behind Arc Raiders accepts the Multiplayer BAFTA at the #BAFTAGamesAwards with @GooglePlay 🏆 pic.twitter.com/FLUN9z0tzB
— BAFTA Games (@BAFTAGames) April 17, 2026

An incredible moment as the whole team behind No Man's Sky takes to the stage to accept the Evolving Game award at the #BAFTAGamesAwards with @GooglePlay 🏆 pic.twitter.com/y4NHFaV3tq
— BAFTA Games (@BAFTAGames) April 17, 2026

Blue Prince takes home the BAFTA for Game Design at the #BAFTAGamesAwards with @GooglePlay 👏 pic.twitter.com/G0F76KVgFC
— BAFTA Games (@BAFTAGames) April 17, 2026

Congratulations to the Atomfall team for taking home the BAFTA for British Game🏆 pic.twitter.com/1AqMvO0QJx
— BAFTA Games (@BAFTAGames) April 17, 2026

Check the roundup below to see the winners list in full.

BAFTA Games Awards 2026 Winners: The Full List

Animation: Dispatch (AdHoc Studio)

Artistic Achievement: Death Stranding 2: On The Beach (Kojima Productions)

Audio Achievement: Dispatch (AdHoc Studio)

Best Game: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (Sandfall Interactive)

British Game: Atomfall (Rebellion)

Debut Game: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (Sandfall Interactive)

Evolving Game: No Man's Sky (Hello Games)

Family: LEGO Party! Well, a bizarre mod will finally let you do just that.

This is far from the first wild mod to be made for Skyrim, which has basically built its entire legacy on its modding scene. But, still, every now and then a mod comes out that completely boggles the mind. Skyrim modder BlurbsTV just made like six of them, and turned them all on at once.

As spotted by GamesRadar+, Blurbs asked his Twitch chat to give him a bunch of unhinged ideas for mods, and just made them. Dragon shouts shooting chickens everywhere, a self-replicating Nazeem, randomly spawning Khajiit that make you ragdoll, and of course, the ability to debate dragons on Tamriel geopolitics and memes. Exactly what I want out of a modded install in 2026.

I modded Skyrim so you can only defeat dragons by debating them on the geopolitics of Tamriel.

Unfortunately, Twitch chat forgot the geopolitics part almost immediately... pic.twitter.com/Ad6Grw87ZR
— Blurbs (@Blurbstv) April 15, 2026

The debates with the dragons take the place of combat: a dragon will spawn and then a text-to-speech bot will ask a question. In classic debate style, the Dragonborn gets 20 seconds to respond, with the dragon getting time to issue a rebuttal. The catch is that chat decides who won the debate, which goes about as well as you'd expect.

In the clip, there was one dragon debate that Blurbs was able to actually win, which involved a question about banning the internet due to Stormcloak propaganda. But, once the debate was over he trips over a randomly spawned Khajiit and flies off the side of a cliff. Incredible.

Unfortunately, none of these mods are available on Nexus Mods or the Steam Workshop, so you can't download them yourself, but BlurbsTV's video is absolutely worth watching for a laugh. I fell prey to this particular pitfall myself after Diablo 4’s vanilla debut in 2023, when I said some things about the endgame experience that I later regretted. Sometimes an endgame experience seems like it’s great in the moment, then a couple weeks roll by and that content begins to feel thin, repetitive, or not nearly as fleshed out as you originally thought (again, my bad). I’ve generally really enjoyed the endgame activities Diablo IV has had so far, whether it’s the tree of whispers bounties from the base game or the super unique raid-like activity from Vessel of Hatred. But Diablo 4 is a game that practically begs you to play it every waking moment of your life, and each version of the endgame so far has failed to remain compelling more than a few weeks after launch, largely due to the fact that each iteration has directed you to a small number of activities that, while fun, just weren’t enough.

It’s with all this in mind that I approached the endgame of Diablo 4’s upcoming expansion, Lord of Hatred. Could Blizzard finally give us an endgame that was not only fun at launch, but also offered enough variety to keep folks engaged in the long term? After playing a few hours of it recently and talking to the developers about what they’re building, I can confirm that Blizzard appears to have received the feedback in this area, and has created an endgame structure that, at the very least, has a much better chance of keeping my attention.

After you’ve finished going to war with the Lord of Hatred himself, the main way you’ll grind for all that delicious loot is through War Plans, a structured playlist that points you to various endgame activities and removes the barriers to entry those activities might normally have. Maybe you’ll spend some time looting a Helltide event before teleporting over to a Nightmare Dungeon to find and kill the boss, then rounding it out with a trip to the good ol’ Pit for some time trial action. The specific nature of the activities you play are determined by a branching tree where you can pick from a few options before teleporting to each activity to take it down, and with six options pulled from the existing endgame activities in Diablo 4, there’s quite a bit of variety baked in.

The best part of War Plans is how quickly it gets you into the action from activity to activity. You no longer have to hunt for Nightmare Dungeon keys or figure out where on the map a Helltide is going on – once you complete one activity, you just teleport straight on over to the next activity and keep slaying. It also means that you spend less time figuring out which activity to focus on, or if you’re new or haven’t played in a while, what even are the endgame activities you’re supposed to be funnelled into if you want to continue your loot and leveling climb. This all made working my way through each new branching checklist fast, quick, rewarding, and a lot more replayable than focusing on a single activity like an uber boss or the raid from Vessel of Hatred.

Another new part of War Plans are the upgradable trees that come along with each activity, from the Tree of Whispers to Infernal Hordes, which customize each of those events, either by modifying a specific behavior within it, or allowing you to control the type of rewards you’ll earn from them. For example, in the Nightmare Dungeons tree, you can buy a perk that guarantees treasure goblins will drop a specific kind of loot when killed and in the Helltide tree, you can buy a perk that will double the rate at which your kills increase the threat level when affected by a shrine. You won’t be able to earn enough points to buy all the perks, and some are pretty explicitly mutually exclusive anyway, which means you’ll need to pick and choose which to buy depending on how you want to play and how you want to be rewarded for all your hard work.

Echoing Hatred mode starts off at the lowest difficulty tier and ups the ante every time you’ve wiped the floor with enough enemies, throwing a boss or two every now and then and eventually a whole bunch of them at the same time.

Beyond War Plans, I also tried out the new horde mode called Echoing Hatred, where you’re thrown into an extremely challenging mode that goes on until you drop dead, offering loot equal to your level of success. This unending arena starts off at the lowest difficulty tier and ups the ante every time you’ve wiped the floor with enough enemies, throwing a boss or two every now and then and eventually a whole bunch of them at the same time. Not only must you survive, but you’re also required to continuously score kills, as the “Overwhelmed” meter fills up every time a new enemy spawns and if you don’t cut them down to size quickly, that meter will put an abrupt end to your run.

Obviously the main draw of this mode is how mindlessly straightforward it is, allowing you to simply push your build as far as it can go and engage in nonstop action for as long as you can possibly keep standing. The fact that it offers rewards equal to your effort and skill is also a pretty efficient way to level. But one of the other really cool things about this mode is that since it’s agnostic to whichever world tier you’re currently in and moves you through them as you progress, it’s an awesome way to test if you’re ready for the next world tier. After all, if you can make it through this constant onslaught in the tier after the one you’re currently playing in, it’s a pretty good sign you’re probably ready to advance to the next bracket. This is especially important since Lord of Hatred is going from a maximum world tier of Torment 4 to Torment 12, which is honestly pretty insane. With so many difficulty options to choose from, this mode feels like the perfect way to figure out where you stand with your current build.

One thing I didn’t get a chance to get a feel for in my time with Lord of Hatred’s endgame is how it feels when played with friends, as all of my time during the demo was spent solo. I’ve got some questions about how it’ll feel, specifically activities like War Plans, where your specific playlist of things to do is unlikely to match up with the other members of your crew perfectly. I was told that friends would still receive credit (and of course the rewards) for running War Plans together, but I’m curious if it might feel like being a second or third wheel when following the party leader around. I prefer to play Diablo 4 with my fellow Wanderers, so this will be a pretty important piece of the puzzle that I haven’t seen firsthand just yet.

It would be downright irresponsible of me to omit the most serious addition to the endgame coming with Lord of Hatred: fishing. Call me crazy, but an activity most common in cozy games somehow feels right at home in Diablo 4, and I spent a good chunk of time with my fishing pole visiting each region in search of fresh pools of water or lava to find new gilled friends. Seriously though, this addition is pretty much just a bit, and from my limited experience didn’t seem like there was a lot to it, with only a few different fish to find in each zone that came to me quite quickly, but still, it’s pretty amusing that they added this and I’m all for it. I do wish they’d have made the minigame for catching fish something a bit more engaging than just tapping a single button once the fish bites onto the hook, but hey, this is Diablo – I’m not expecting them to go full Animal Crossing here.

After a few hours with Lord of Hatred’s endgame, I’m more optimistic than ever that the new War Plan system will be a format that goes the distance and keeps me engaged at least a bit longer than past iterations. And anything that gives me more excuses to keep dungeon delving in this awesome ARPG sounds alright by me.

Travis Northup is a writer for IGN. Del Rey had used her real name, Elizabeth Grant, for the registration — but internet sleuths quickly connected the dots.

Now, the track is live on Del Rey's YouTube channel — and it sounds a fitting Bond song, while also playfully referencing the fact First Light is a video game (and perhaps also Del Rey's own iconic tune, Video Games). Veteran Bond composer David Arnold (who scored five Bond films, from Tomorrow Never Dies to Quantum of Solace) is behind its score.

"Can't say I'm surprised to see you running toward the sun," Del Rey sings. "It's the first light of day... Ah, you're ready? All the fates just watch you, dying just to know whether you'll play your life like a game."

The track is a fitting addition to the franchise for Del Rey — who previously recorded her 2005 track "24" to feature in Daniel Craig movie Spectre, the franchise's 24th film, only for Sam Smith's "Writing's On the Wall" to ultimately be chosen in its place instead.

007: First Light has suffered a string of leaks over the past few months, and perhaps most notably this week, when the game's ending was accidentally made available publicly due to a major slip-up by the Indonesian ratings board. With just six weeks still to go until the game's launch, IO has been keen to keep much about the game under wraps to avoid spoiling narrative surprises.

The long-awaited next game from the developer of Hitman, 007: First Light features a starry cast and big ambitions to kickstart a fresh James Bond game trilogy. While its story remains largely secret, we know it'll feature a fresh-faced incarnation of Bond played by Dexter: Original Sin star Patrick Gibson, in a new origin story that features The Eternals' Gemma Chan, The Walking Dead's Lennie James, and The Hunger Games' Lenny Kravitz.

Following an earlier delay, 007: First Light is now set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on May 27. A Switch 2 version is also set to follow — though not until "later this summer."

Of course, Del Rey isn't the only music mogul involved with the project. Singer and actor Lenny Kravitz will star in the game as Bawma, a villain who at one point hangs poor Bond upside down and threatens to feed him to a pair of waiting crocodiles.

Tom Phillips is IGN's News Editor. A separate Laufey skin will also be sold via Fortnite's shop, alongside two other tracks: Tough Luck and Lover Girl.

Tomorrow's Fortnite update will also finally make the game's original Save the World PVE mode free to all players, and introduce the next story act for the game's main battle royale mode.

It remains a typically busy time for Fortnite and developer Epic Games, which is reportedly developing a major Disney extraction shooter mode for launch later this year, despite mass layoffs that impacted 1,000 employees last month. Long known for his conservative views, O'Donnell previously seemed dissatisfied with Trump, who he reportedly labelled as an "idiot" in a Twitter post back in 2016 and said he "loath[ed]" in 2017.

"I appreciate the trust that the President has put in me and look forward to working with him in Congress to continue delivering for working families and keeping our nation safe," O'Donnell wrote now, confirming that with Trump's support he would continue his plan to try and unseat Nevada's 3rd Congressional District Democrat incumbent Susie Lee.

"Marty O'Donnell is a World-Class Composer and Entrepreneur," Trump declared yesterday. "As your next Congressman, Marty will fight tirelessly to Unleash American Energy DOMINANCE, Keep our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Ensure LAW AND ORDER, Strengthen our Brave Military/Veterans, and Protect our always under siege Second Amendment."

"The stakes this midterm could not be higher," O'Donnell continued. "That's why when I started running, I promised I would drop out unless President Trump supported me so that Republicans could avoid wasting resources on a needless primary.

Much like President Trump, I didn’t come from the world of politics. O'Donnell's Halo themes will also be heard again later this year with the launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved, which will bring Master Chief's adventures to Xbox, PC and PlayStation.

Tom Phillips is IGN's News Editor. This includes its Frozen Wilds DLC plus various technical options and visual upgrades to make it look more like its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West. "Horizon Zero Dawn presents us with a beautiful world full of unforgettable challenges," IGN wrote in its review of the game's original release back in 2017, scoring it highly.

The Crew Motorfest, meanwhile, is Ubisoft's taken on the open-world driving genre popularized by Forza Horizon. It features a sunny version of various Hawaiian islands and launched to positive reviews back in 2023.

"It’s said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery," IGN wrote in our The Crew Motorfest review. "To be fair, Motorfest is a robust racer with a confident sense of style, a quality arcade handling model, and a long list of generally well-planned events right out of the box. However, the shift to a smaller map has seen it lose a part of its old identity, boats and aircraft feel like they’ve been sidelined, and some of its event Playlists work a lot better than others."

Finally, there's Football Manager 26 Console, a game which needs little introduction. It's Football Manager, on console, and the latest version to boot.

As ever, Sony is yet to make this list of games official — though is expected to do so later today. We'll update again when it does so, and slot in details of any further additions.

Tom Phillips is IGN's News Editor. As you could probably guess from the title, it has a bit of a Five Nights at Freddy’s feel to it, forcing players to spend 99 nights in a haunted forest. During that time, players must defeat creatures that live in the woods and set out to save four lost children.

The game currently has 26 billion lifetime visits and a 14.2 million all-time peak player count, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hearing those numbers, it makes a lot of sense as to why 20th Century Studios decided to make it its first major foray into video game adaptations since Disney acquired the studio in 2019.

No creatives or producers have been attached to the project yet beyond the game’s developers — Alex Kieft, Cameron Angland, and Matthew Hufton — who will serve as executive producers.

“Growing up, Disney and 20th films were a huge part of our childhood, so collaborating with such legendary and enduring studios feels surreal,” the game’s creators said in a statement. “We’re excited to explore the world of 99 Nights in the Forest on a broader stage and to create some scares in an entirely new medium.”

Lex Briscuso is a film and television critic and a freelance entertainment writer for IGN. I’ll take all kinds: the hardboiled detective, the seedy crime story, neo noir, classic pulp – you name it, I’m buying. So when Mouse: P.I. for Hire sauntered onto my screen the way Ilsa walks into Rick’s in Casablanca, I was pretty excited about it. But noir isn’t just an aesthetic to be thrown on like an old coat as you’re leaving your office at the behest of a leggy blonde. While Mouse: P.I. for Hire clearly understands the style and tropes of classic noir films and novels, as well as 1930s cartoons more broadly, it doesn’t seem to get why those things are there, or how they are used to tell compelling stories. By fusing a hardboiled detective mystery with a fast, retro-style FPS, developer Fumi Games has made a shooter that is thematically incoherent, with the apparent aspirations of its story contradicted at every point by the actual action. Of all the Steam Libraries in all the PCs in all the world, Mouse: P.I. for Hire walked into mine. And I wish I liked it more than I do.

Mouse follows Jack Pepper, a private eye in a world where everyone is a mouse, after Wanda Fuller from the Mouseburg Herald sets him on the case of a missing magician. As you’d expect, that spirals into a much larger conspiracy that includes an attempt on a mayoral candidate’s life and racially motivated mouse-on-mouse violence as bigger mice oppress the smaller shrews. Same as it ever was, even in Mouseburg, and the requisite twists and turns you’d expect from any good detective story make this tale solid enough.

What bothers me, however, is how overly-referential so much of it is. This is a world of mice, so everything is about cheese. Everything. A bad guy? He’s a cheeselegger. Run into a lady mouse with a sultry voice? It’ll be described as “gorgonzola piccante slapped on a mozzarella platter.” Someone need to assure you they’re telling the truth? They’ll swear on Maw-Maw’s cottage curds. This is charming initially. Then it never stops. Everything is a reference to the fact that everyone is a mouse and mice like cheese – and when it’s not, instead it’ll be a reference to an old cartoon, or the fact that this is a video game. I should have probably guessed the former when one of the first things I saw was a steamboat named Willie, but at least that and the spinach power-up that gives you Popeye arms is cute. Recalling the Igor/Eye-gor joke from Young Frankenstein? Not so much.

And it doesn’t end there. Run into a series of robot boss fights? Jack will say that he hopes they don’t "rule of three" this thing, which, of course, is exactly what happens. If you’re looking for the Cheeselegging Foreman, Jack will quip that he doesn’t look like much of a boss… more like a mini-boss, and then laugh at his own joke. The voice actors, led by Troy Baker, do an admirable job with what they have, but nothing in Mouseburg is allowed to just be. It has to be a mouse reference or a (literally) cheesy one-liner or a reference to something else. It’s hard to care about anything in Mouse: PI For Hire because it never stops making jokes about everything. It just wants to remind you of other, better things. Surely that’s enough, right?

Mouse is the latest in a recent wave of “boomer shooters,” and it's a decent one.

At least the shooting is better. This is the latest in a wave of “boomer shooters” inspired by old school FPSes like Doom or Quake, and it’s a decent one at that. You start with a pistol and Jack’s fists, but you’ll soon acquire a shotgun, dynamite, a James Gun (which is just a Tommy gun), and more unique stuff like the Devarnisher, which shoots what looks like Elmer’s glue that melts the flesh from your enemies’ bones, leaving only a skeleton. Throw in stuff like a double jump, dash, spinning tail for hovering, and a slide, and Jack’s got some stylish moves when the bad guys show up. This ain’t Quake, but it does feel good. It doesn’t hurt that all of it, from reload animations to random conversations, is rendered in an absolutely gorgeous black and white mix of spritework and 3D models. The worldbuilding may be thin, but Mouse: P.I. for Hire is still dressed to the nines.

Even here, though, I have issues. Weapons can feel weak, especially the shotgun – it’s got the audio kick of a popgun, and there’s a strange disconnect to seeing something that sounds like a kid’s toy blow off some poor mouse’s head as you paint the white of the world with the black ichor that spews out of his neck. Enemies mostly come out of doors marked with a skull that you can’t enter, robbing those areas of anything remotely resembling a sense of place. Levels also really like to pull the “we’re going to lock you in a room and throw baddies at you until they’re dead or you are” schtick a little too much for my taste. None of this is ever gamebreaking, mind; the combat is fundamentally good enough to carry you to the end of the roughly 12-hour campaign, but sometimes it feels like being at a show that’s never quite bad enough to leave. And at least on the normal difficulty, health items are so generous there’s rarely a challenge.

Like any good boomer shooter, there are plenty of secrets to find – newspapers, cash, weapon upgrade schematics, baseball cards, and so on – fragile walls to blow up, and even locked safes to open with your tail, which pulls double duty as a lockpick. Some of those locks are on a time limit or must be solved in a limited number moves, and you only get one shot at the good stuff they hold; others are so easy you could probably solve them by letting an actual mouse run across your keyboard. It’s very jarring.

Once you’re done with a level, it’s back to the hub, which encompasses Jack’s office, the local bar, store, weapon upgrade shop, and so on. My favorite thing here is the baseball card minigame you can play at the bar. You’ll switch between pitching and being at bat, using the cards in your hand (players and abilities) to try and score as many runs as you can. It’s fun! What I like less is the whole “being a detective” thing, mostly because I never got to actually do it. Any clues you find will be pinned to Jack’s caseboard, and once you get them there, Jack will just intuit where to go. No work on your part required. What’s the point of being a gumshoe if all the answers are handed right to me?

That brings me to one of my major problems with Mouse: P.I. for Hire. Look, I hate to be the guy who brings up “ludonarrative dissonance” in a video game review in The Year of Our Lord 2026, and if you’re rolling your eyes right now, I can’t blame you. But it’s an actual issue here. Jack Pepper is a P.I. who kills more people in a single mission than Phillip Marlowe has in every book Raymond Chandler ever wrote combined. I don’t care how corrupt the cops are: a private detective can’t break into a police station and slaughter them en masse and then go about his day. In one particularly nonsensical scenario, Jack inadvertently burns down an opera house to save a guy running for mayor, and he ends up fighting… an opera singer? And shoots her? Is she dead? Did I just kill an actress for being angry I burned down her workplace? If I didn’t, have I left her alive and unconscious inside a burning building? Mouse: P.I. for Hire doesn’t tell me, and doesn’t seem to care either way.

The disconnect here matters because you spend a lot of time talking about these characters and Jack’s motivations.

None of this is to say that noir cannot or should not be violent, but that violence usually has a purpose. Much of Elliot Chaze’s seminal novel Black Wings Has My Angel is about robbing an armored car, but the book builds to that – it’s a big deal when it finally happens, and the characters have to reckon with the fallout once it does. Jack Pepper, on the other hand, is a walking catastrophe and nobody in Mouseburg seems to care. He largely gets to go about his business and is portrayed as a down-on-his-luck everyman P.I., like the characters who inspired him, when he is, at best, a mass murderer. Does that make for a more fun video game? Maybe. But it’s bad noir, and a worse detective tale. In the stories Mouse: P.I. for Hire references, violence is an unfortunate but unavoidable part of the human experience that shatters the people it touches. Here, it’s just entertainment, and that weakens the whole concept.

“But Will,” you might say, “this is a goofy, Looney Tunes FPS. Why should I care about any of that?” And the answer is because Mouse wants you to. It wants you to believe that this is important. You spend a lot of time talking about these characters, about putting together the clues you need to get to the bottom of what’s going on, and about Jack’s motivation for doing the work (he allegedly needs the money, which both leads to him taking cases and doesn’t track when I’m super rich from all the killing). All of that makes a lot less sense after you’ve gone to Tinsel Bros. Studios and single-handedly eradicated the mob hanging out there, all while doing a bunch of Tomb Raider/Indiana Jones/Conan the Barbarian impressions as everyone says you should be an actor. Give this guy a week on the job as chief of police and Mouseburg would be the safest city in the world because nobody would be left alive to commit crimes in the first place. It’s hard to buy into Jack as the regular guy who needs to gather evidence I’m told he is when he’s just wiped out the local police department, you know?
