"Purple Haze" (Johnny Jones & The King Casuals) - During his formative years in Nashville, Jimi Hendrix watched Johnny Jones, his blues guitar mentor, play at every opportunity. When Hendrix left Nashville for New York City, his band, The King Casuals, started backing Jones. A few years after Hendrix hit it big, Jones covered "Purple Haze" with The King Casuals because he wanted everyone to "hear the blues" in the song. Working with producer William Bell, Jones' version fulfilled his goal, even if he did mangle some of the lyrics.
2. "It's Your Thing" (Grant Green) - Although often overlooked when the greatest jazz guitarists are considered, the late Grant Green nevertheless was a stalwart on the jazz-funk scene. He recorded this instrumental cover of The Isley Brothers' smash hit, "It's Your Thing" on August 15, 1970. Claude Bartee was the tenor sax man swapping lead licks with Green.
3. "People Get Ready" (Jeff Beck) - Guitar god Jeff Beck reunited with former Jeff Beck Group vocalist Rod Stewart on this cover of the Curtis Mayfield soul masterpiece, "People Get Ready." It originally appeared on Beck's 1985 album Flash.
4. "Be-Bop-A-Lula" (John Lennon) - John Lennon recorded this version of Gene Vincent's rockabilly classic during the 1974 New York sessions for his Rock & Roll album, a collection of early rock hits which was released the following year. A favorite of his as a teenager, Lennon clearly enjoyed working on this song, lovingly recreating Vincent's record nearly lick-for-lick.
5. "Mind Games" (George Clinton) - Head P-Funkateer George Clinton recorded this cover of John Lennon's "Mind Games" for the Lennon tribute album, Working Class Hero. He rounded up a number of his P-Funk mates for the "Mind Games" sessions, including guitarist De Wayne "Blackbird" McKnight, drummer Gary "Mudbone" Cooper and vocalists Garry Shider, Robert "P-Nut" Johnson, Belita Woods and Joy Gilliam.

NOTICE OF INTENT
I GOTCHA COVERED is intended as a noncommercial, radio-style podcast. "COCONUT" (Fred Schneider) - B-52s singer Fred Schneider was another of the artists who got a call when producers Al Kooper and Danny Kapilian were putting together the 1995 Harry Nilsson tribute album, For the Love of Harry: Everybody Sings Nilsson. Schneider's head-banging cover of "Coconut," which was produced by Richard Barone and John Agnello, stands in stark contrast to the laid-back island vibe of Nilsson's own version. His recording, which was a Top 10 hit in 1972, first appeared on the album Nilsson Schmilsson.
2. "THE LETTER" (Zenphonic) - This inventive, techno-influenced cover of the Wayne Carson standard, which can be found on the band's Cyber Gypsies CD, is truly a family affair. Zenphonic vocalist Oceana Gayden is accompanied on the recording by her world-famous dad, songwriter-guitarist Mac Gayden, and her brother, guitarist Mac Jr. Oceana discovered "The Letter" while listening to a Box Tops album which included a cover of her dad's R&B hit, "She Shot a Hole in My Soul."
3. "I DON'T WANT TO TIE YOU DOWN" (Bill Lloyd) - Pop rocker Bill Lloyd contributed this cover to the 1990 album, For the Love of Todd: A Tribute to Todd Rundgren. Lloyd played all the instruments on this recording, which he co-produced with Byron House at The Castle Studio in Nashville. "I Don't Want To Tie You Down" first appeared on Rundgren's 1973 album, A Wizard, A True Star.
4. "D'YER MAK'ER" (Sheryl Crow) - Sheryl Crow recorded this track for the 1995 album, Encomium: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin. "D'yer Mak'er" originally appeared on the 1973 Led Zeppelin album, Houses of the Holy.
5. "JOHNNY B. GOODE" (Johnny Winter) - Blues rock guitarist Johnny Winter recorded this Chuck Berry classic for his 1970 album, Second Winter. He is joined on this track by his brother Edgar, who contributed the honky-tonk piano.
6. "COLD TURKEY" (Cheap Trick) - Cheap Trick contributed this recording of John Lennon's ode to primal-scream-therapy-as-a-cure-for-heroin-addiction to the album, Working Class Hero: A Tribute to John Lennon. Three of the band's members (guitarist Rick Neilsen, bassist Tom Petersson and drummer Bun. E. Carlos) actually recorded with Lennon in New York during the Double Fantasy sessions. The version of "I'm Losing You" he recorded with the Tricksters, which appeared on Anthology, is superior to the version he released on Double Fantasy.

NOTICE OF INTENT
I GOTCHA COVERED is intended as a noncommercial, radio-style podcast. "SUPERSTITION" (Beck, Bogert & Appice) - Although composer Stevie Wonder's recording of this song spent 13 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart before this rendition was even released, the song originally was intended for Jeff Beck. Wonder wrote the song for the guitar god in exchange for his six-string contributions to Wonder's 1972 album, Talking Book. But by releasing the song as a single, Beck felt Wonder had undercut the recording of the song he made with bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmen Appice, and said so publicly. Wonder mended the riff by contributing the song "Cause We Ended As Lovers" to Beck's 1975 hit album, Blow By Blow.
2. "SUNSHINE OF YOUR LOVE (ADRIAN SHERWOOD & SKIP MCDONALD REMIX)" (Living Color) - Living Color recorded the Cream hit "Sunshine of Your Love" for the soundtrack of the film True Lies. When the band's label released the track to radio, they included this remix by Adrian Sherwood and Skip McDonald. Producer-keyboardist Sherwood is the head of the U.K.'s On-U Sound label and producer-guitarist McDonald, who was an original member of New York's Sugar Hill Gang, is one of his main musical collaborators. They are best known for their work with the reggae collectives, Dub Syndicate and African Head Charge.
3. "ONE" (Aimee Mann) - In 1993, when producers Al Kooper and Danny Kapilian began planning the Harry Nilsson tribute album, For the Love of Harry: Everybody Sings Nilsson, one of the artists they asked to participate was Aimee Mann. Vocalist Mann chose to record the Three Dog Night hit, "One" and enlisted the help of producer Jon Brion, who played all the instruments. Together, they crafted a sparse, yet lush rendition of the song. Neil Innes and Chris Difford contributed backing vocals.
4. "LONG AS I CAN SEE THE LIGHT" (Ted Hawkins) - The story of the late, great singer-songwriter Ted Hawkins is heartbreaking and heartwarming, just like his cover of John Fogerty's "Long As I Can See the Light." Hawkins labored most of his life in obscurity until he was discovered busking on Venice Beach by a Geffen Records exec. The result was his major-label debut, The Next Hundred Years. The album was released in March of 1994, just 10 months before Hawkins' death in January of '95. The album's finale was this moving track, which features the outstanding lap steel stylings of Greg Leisz. The song originally appeared on the 1970 Creedence Clearwater Revival album, Cosmo's Factory.
5. "HEARTBREAK HOTEL" (Albert King) - The legendary blues guitarist Albert King recorded this swinging track as part of his 1970 album, Blues For Elvis: King Does the King's Things. The album, which was released on the Stax label, was produced by Donald "Duck" Dunn and Al Jackson Jr.
6. "HEY BULLDOG" (Toad the Wet Sprocket) - Toad the Wet Sprocket recorded this obscure John Lennon song for the soundtrack of the film, I Know What You Did Last Summer. The song originally appeared on the The Beatles' Yellow Submarine soundtrack album.

NOTICE OF INTENT
I GOTCHA COVERED is intended as a noncommercial, radio-style podcast. "PURPLE HAZE" (The Cure) - This Robert Smith-produced track originally appeared on the CD Stone Free: Tribute to Jimi Hendrix (1993), but also can be found on The Cure's new compilation, Join the Dots: B-sides and Rarities, 1978-2001.
2. "IMMIGRANT SONG" (All the Queen's Men) - From AQM's superb double CD, Curvy Baby, this Led Zep cover features unrelenting riffage by guitar goddess Catherine Capozzi and haunting vocals by Christine Zufferey on top of Tamora Gooding's pounding percussion. FYI: The second disc in the Curvy Baby set is a collection of remixes of the songs on disc one by top Euro DJs. Listen for remixes of "Immigrant Song" on future editions of I GOTCHA COVERED.
3. "OHIO" (Greg Trooper) - This powerful live rendition of the legendary Neil Young-penned protest song was recorded at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville as part of the "Freedom Sings" concert series sponsored by the First Amendment Center. Singer-songwriter-guitarist Trooper is backed by Bill Lloyd on electric guitar, Byron House on bass and Fenner Castner on drums.
4. "NORWEGIAN WOOD" (Victor Wooten) - World's greatest electric bassist Victor Wooten's instrumental interpretation of this John Lennon composition appeared on his second solo album, What Did He Say?. Amazingly, what you're hearing is only one bass on one track - that's why he's the world's greatest electric bassist.
5. "WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS" (Todd Rundgren) - Rundgren's moving homage to what some consider George Harrison's crowning moment with The Beatles appeared on the album Songs From The Material World: A Tribute To George Harrison.
6. "EVERLASTING LOVE" (U2) - U2's jangly, feel-good cover of the Mac Gayden classic appeared on their 1989 single "All I Want Is You" and was included on their 1998 limited edition compilation, The Best of 1980-1990/B-Sides. This pop and R&B standard has been a hit for a number of artists in four different decades including Gloria Estefan, Carl Carlton and Robert Knight, the song's original hit maker.

NOTICE OF INTENT
I GOTCHA COVERED is intended as a noncommercial, radio-style podcast.
