We all know this line! A well-known cellular carrier uses it in their advertisements for reliable cell phone service. There are a lot of ways not to be heard: The silence of being alone, very alone; The silence of being with someone that you are too terrified to say anything to, for fear of being abused; The silence of keeping secrets about domestic violence from your family and friends.

Silence is not golden. Keeping silent about domestic abuse of any kind only perpetuates more silence. Where does it end? Domestic violence can end in deadly consequences, as supported by the statistic that 75% of all homicides related to domestic violence occur after the victim leaves the relationship; and 50% of all women murdered in the United States are killed by a spouse or an acquaintance.

Do you ever just want to stand at the top of the highest mountain and shout, “I am being hurt! I need help! Can you hear me now?”

Women of Worth is here to listen and help you get free from domestic violence. We can listen or direct you to specific services you might need. We can’t do it alone. It takes a neighbor, a friend, a family member to break the silence. It takes you! You can be heard, but you need to step out of the darkness into the light to do so. It won’t be easy, but it will be well worth the rest of your life, and you are not alone. People say life is short, but it is far too short to be abused or assaulted or degraded in any way. It is our obligation as human beings to be watchful over others, to protect when possible, and to serve where needed. Can you get help for domestic violence now?

Family is important, and it takes patience, understanding, and lots of love, in a safe environment. Love should never hurt. Happiness is not a state of mind but a state of environment, a state of being safe, and a state of being at peace with yourself and the world around you. Know that there is hope. Call us today at (530) 272-6851 if you need help.

Wow. What a year it’s been! May, 2011 marks our 10th anniversary, and this past year, we opened Hetty’s Haven, which was a dream in the making since our founding. Looking ahead, we have several events coming up in 2011, and we are looking forward to bringing back WoW Gift & Thrift!

Hetty’s Haven: Rebuilding lives shattered by domestic violence.

Every person has the right to live in a safe place… without fear. Hetty’s Haven enables women and children to safely escape domestic violence, and allows them to build strength, confidence and trust along their journey to a safe new life.

Hetty’s Haven honors Hetty Williams, who was shot to death here in Grass Valley with a high-powered nail gun by her husband of more than 20 years.

Hetty’s Haven provides a long-term transitional living program for 12 to 15 women and children, and is staffed with highly trained volunteers. Hetty’s Haven offers women support services to ensure clients are receiving the help they need. Since Hetty’s Haven opened in July, 2010, we have helped 13 women and 16 children.

WoW Gift & Thrift

After being closed for six years, the community is still asking us when we will reopen WoW Gift & Thrift! We are happy to report that we are currently scouting just the right location for a new facility where we can reopen the store. We receive wonderful donations from our great community, and we are pleased that we have the inventory to support the Women of Worth clients, as well as acting as a community resource for other agencies with clients in need, AND have the inventory to also support a local thrift store. Stay tuned!

Thank You to Our Great Community

As a survivor of domestic violence, I cannot thank you enough for all of your love, prayer and support for Women of Worth. I know, personally, what it means to be scared, and how helpless you can feel when it seems like there is nowhere to go. Women of Worth is supported almost entirely by your generosity. Even our “staff” are volunteers, and are highly trained to work with clients in need of great love, support and encouragement. I am in awe over this community’s generosity, whether it is volunteer time, material donations or financial assistance.

We couldn’t have helped people like the woman we helped as we opened Hetty’s Haven, who fled a stalker across many states, and had nowhere to go. We were able to help her, along with many others, because every person has the right to live in a safe place… without fear.

Domestic violence occurs in 60% of marriages and is the most under reported crime, and 90% of battered women reported that their children were present when they were beaten.

“You brighten our days, and forever touched our hearts and lives. There are not enough thank you’s that I can give you. My daughter is so little. For her, this means she can remain in her innocence and have beautiful memories.”

Lilly, Former Client of Women of Worth
(Name has been changed)

Most women who are physically abused never contact non-governmental organizations, shelters, or the police for help.

“My husband was a master manipulator. Every time I would tell him I was leaving him because of his abuse of the kids and me, he would overdose on his medication, or do something else that he hoped would make me stay with him. Well, one day after his latest overdose, I had had enough. I called Women of Worth, and they moved the kids and me far away from this very sick man. I was loved and encouraged the whole way…and now my kids and I are safe.”

All men, women children have the right to live their lives in a healthy and safe environment, without emotional, physical or sexual abuse, or the fear of abuse. If you need help, please call us at 530-272-6851; or you can email us at info@ihaveworth.org.

Women of Worth offers help as unique as the people who seek it. When you come to Women of Worth, you will be greeted with love, compassion, and warmth. We will help you figure out what you need, and will help you get the resources you need so you can be in a safe, supportive environment.

Women of Worth, with the help of our great community, can reduce the effect of domestic violence locally. We can’t end the prevalence of domestic violence, but, together, we can end domestic violence… one family at a time.

“I am living proof that domestic violence exists and can be overcome with the support of family, friends, strangers and others who have your best interest at heart. As I look back on my journey to my God-given right to have my child and myself live in a healthy, non-violent home, I am overcome with gratitude for Women of Worth. You were always there when I needed you with no questions asked. It is my purest hope and prayer that anyone who is in a domestic violence situation will tell someone they need help.”

Karrie, former client of Women of Worth
(name has been changed)

Domestic violence is a widespread problem in our community. In 2007, there were 3,163 reported domestic violence calls in Nevada County alone. Nearly one-third of American women report being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives.

Furthermore, half of all women murdered in the US are killed by a spouse or an acquaintance. When a woman decides to leave the relationship, the danger may increase, as 75% of all homicides related to domestic violence occur after the victim leaves the relationship, as was the case for Hetty Williams.

Women of Worth was founded in 2001 by Sandy Schmidt, a domestic violence survivor with a passion to see the lives of abused women and children restored. Services are designed with this question in mind: “What would have helped Hetty escape and start a safe, new life? What can we do in our community so this doesn’t happen again?”

The goal is to provide a long-term solution for those who need to escape a violent environment for immediate safety, but over time, to help them increase self-reliance and improve quality of life by helping them rebuild their lives with dignity, hope and safety.

Hetty’s Story: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Grass Valley resident Hetty Williams was shot to death with a high-powered nail gun by the man who had pledged to love and protect her. Hetty’s husband of more than 20 years murdered her shortly after she left the relationship.

Hetty had filed for separation and moved out of their home. Friends noticed the joy Hetty radiated in finally standing up for herself, though most never knew the dark secrets she’d kept about her marriage. She met with her estranged husband a few weeks later to work out details when she was murdered in the home they once shared.

Hetty was a dedicated mother of two daughters, found joy in nature, and taught where she applied her desire to help others. Beginning with a career in landscape design, she later worked as a teacher for at-risk students, finding purpose in a career, adapting classroom lessons into tactile learning experiences for a blind student. She was a gentle, loving and dedicated woman who put her whole heart into everything she did.

She was ready to live by her favorite quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” but she never got the chance.

Hetty touched the lives of so many children, teachers, friends, and family in her community – and her loss was devastating. It is in her honor that Women of Worth opened Hetty’s Haven, a transitional home for women escaping domestic violence. Hetty’s Haven is a supportive safe haven for up to 15 women and children.

Why do we need Hetty’s Haven?
FACTS: The DANGER of DEADLY FORCE

50% of all women murdered in the US are killed by a spouse or an acquaintance

75% of all homicides related to domestic violence occur after the victim leaves the relationship

Women of Worth is seeking help from the community to raise additional funding to sustain this amazing home, which is already resulting in healed and rebuilt lives for so many.

Women of Worth was founded by Sandy Schmidt, a survivor of domestic violence. As a volunteer herself, Sandy leads a team of volunteers who have a passion to see the lives of abused women and children restored. Women of Worth’s no-cost services are designed with this question in mind: “What would help women like Hetty to escape and start a safe, new life?”

In the mind of the woman, the question could be as complicated as, “Where can I go…?

Help give her a place to go home.

Women of Worth is a 501 (c)(3) community benefit nonprofit assisting families in crisis and domestic violence victims to increase self-reliance and improve quality of life by helping them rebuild their lives with dignity, hope and safety. Our services are provided free of charge to our clients. Results are families that live in safety, renewed hopefulness — free from the threat of violence and abuse.

Women of Worth is supported almost entirely by the generosity of the local community. You can join in and provide help with volunteer time, material donations and financial assistance, both of which are tax deductible. There are several ways to help, including volunteer time, material donations and financial assistance.
