White Horse Tavern (1974)

Not to be confused with the more well know White Horse Tavern in the West Village, this place also shares some of its appeal. It’s a dive bar with an old 50ties chalet decor that gives it character while the mix of construction workers and Wall St thugs along with long time locals really accentuates it. Expect cheap drinks and good ol fried food made on premises. 2-3 floors ensure you will always find a table. It’s said that Helen, the sweet prehistoric owner, will give you drinks on the house just for knowing her name and having some distant relative from somewhere Irish. As things stand today, it’s likely that this would be Kerouac’s White Horse of choice.

One of the few bars in the Lower East Side that really epitomizes that grungy image everyone still has of the LES. The decor is 70ts mod mixed in with just good ol dive bar appeal. 151 seems like the kind of place Alex and his droogs would drink at before a nite of pol and ultraviolence. These Clockwork Orange references won’t be lost on its clientele who is old enough to be born around the time the movie came out. On weekend nights this place can be a haven away from the horrors of the frat infested rocker version of the Meatpacking District that has become of the LES. I once spotted a Ministry band member there. And the ratio guys to girls is pretty good if you are a girl into the pyahnitsa rocker type.

HAPPY HOUR: Daily, 6pm-10pm; two-for-one beer and well
