The Indianapolis Art Center this month will open a new exhibit featuring programs, workshops and lectures based on a cultural exchange with artists from the Shandong College of Arts in Jinan, China. “The exhibit runs June 28 through August 23,” says Director of Exhibitions and Artist Services David Kwasigroh. “It has 67 paintings altogether.”

A State of Welcoming: Assistance For Asians in Indiana

In order to assist Asian immigrants in central Indiana, the Refugee Resources and Research Institute is working to organize a day of health services. “I don’t want to call it a health fair, because we are going to go beyond that,” says spokesman David Suzuki. He says the proposed day-long event would include health screenings and address dental needs. “There are a lot of health needs and accessing the health care system is a major challenge.”

Three Indiana Scholars Join National Council on the Humanities

Two members of the Indiana University faculty and a Butler University professor have been appointed to the National Endowment for the Humanities’ (NEH) National Council on the Humanities. Professors Jamsheed Kairshasp Choksy, David Michael Hertz and Marvin Bailey Scott began their official duties at the Council’s quarterly meeting on May 22 and serve until January 26, 2014.

Hoosiers celebrated Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May. The designation recognizes the contributions of people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent living in America. Congress passed a joint Congressional Resolution in 1978 to commemorate Asian American Heritage Week during the first week of May. The date was selected because the first Japanese immigrants arrived in the United States on May 7, 1843 and the transcontinental railroad was completed by many Chinese laborers on May 10, 1869. The commemoration was later expanded into a month.

Hoosier Assistance: Providing Relief to Asian Disasters

A company with roots in Indiana is providing assistance following two major Asian disasters in May. Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Co. is contributing $1.1 million in relief for victims of a powerful earthquake that caused massive destruction to China's Sichuan Province and a cyclone that ravaged the southern coastal area of Myanmar.

The Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana (HLFI) will release next month its 2008 list of endangered landmarks. “These suggest top priority projects for us,” says President Marsh Davis. “We commit not only the public relations part of it, but also we commit internally a lot of time in staff efforts and financial resources.” The 2008 list will be announced May 2 at the Harrison Center in Indianapolis.

Indiana communities are working to help immigrants adapt to their surroundings. A non-profit organization in Elkhart County is taking the lead in helping to introduce immigrants to their neighbors. A Hoosier First: The MultiEthnic Indiana Conference

Indiana next month will host the state’s first MultiEthnic Conference. The April 22 conference is part of a three-prong approach commissioned by Governor Mitch Daniels and developed by Juana Watson, the state’s senior advisor for Latino and immigrant affairs, and Gregory Scott, the director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission. The other parts consist of research performed by the Sagamore Institute and a state educational campaign.

We hope to have participation from all those communities.”
