Year End Celebration

Since 1999, the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) has hosted the Bridgestone Tournament of Champions (TOC) as the final Event of the IJGT season. The Event, which is hosted each year at the prestigious Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, Fla., is not only the largest field of the season, but also it is increasing in national and international prestige each year.

The 2013 Bridgestone Tournament of Champions on May 25-27 will feature 200 IJGT members competing for final bragging rights until next season. We invite all IJGT members to register early in order to ensure you get your spot in the field before they fill up for this exciting Event!

The three-day event, which is to be played over Memorial Day Weekend, is the Season-Ending Event for the IJGT and a great way to kick-off your summer season at one of the top junior events in the country. The IJGT is proud to offer to its members a full schedule of events to ensure all competitors not only have the opportunity to compete in a championship atmosphere, but also enjoy a fun family vacation over the holiday weekend. The schedule of events will include the champions banquet, parents wine tasting/silent auction, minute-to-win-it games and so much more! The full schedule of events for the weekend will be announced by the end of March.

The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) is excited to announce its 2013 Spring schedule. After a fantastic Fall, The IJGT hopes to continue its success well into the Spring season. With 13 events scheduled at venues across the East and West coasts (with more on the way), including two new venues, The IJGT Spring schedule is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

The IJGT Spring Season will kick-off in Florida at the Harmony Golf Preserve, January 19-20. The IJGT has taken a two year absence from Harmony, but is more than excited to return with a new class of elite junior golfers. The Southeast leg of the Tour will make stops at three incredible venues: Colleton River, which will be the host of the 2015 U.S. Junior Amateur, Kiawah Island Golf Resort, host of the 2012 PGA Championship and the 1991 Ryder Cup (nicknamed the "War by the Shore") and The Club at Savannah Harbor , which will host another Champions Tour Event in April.

The Northeast leg of the tour will return to Greate Bay CC in Somers Point, N.J. as well as to Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, located in Farmington, Pa. In conjunction with the SE and NE tours, the IJGT will make several stops along the west coast, including its first appearance at Presidio Golf Course in San Francisco, Calif.

To top-off the Spring 2013 season, the IJGT will host its Annual Tournament of Champions over Memorial Day Weekend, May 25-27.

Notes from Day 1 of the Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions

ORLANDO, Fla. - First round play at the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions completed in the early afternoon on Saturday May 25. Grand Cypress Golf Club provided the stage with their New Course and East and North Course combo for juniors to show their talents on IJGT's grandest stage.

Temperatures during play touched into the mid-80s with high humidity. As the day went on, the wind began blowing harder which made playing conditions difficult.

Boys' Round of the Day

Davis Shore of Knoxville, Tenn., took the lead in the Boys 14 Under Division with an impressive 3-under-par 69. Shore began his round on the back nine where he played steady, opening with three pars then finally notching a birdie on the par-4 13th. He birdied the 18th hole, his 9th, to shoot an opening nine of 1-under-par 35. Shore came out firing on his second nine, making three birdies of his first five holes. Shore made a bogey on the tough par-3 seventh to shoot a 2-under-par 34.

Girls' Round of the Day

Isabella DiLisio of Hatfield, Pa., and Moyu Sasaki of Tokyo, Japan, share the Girls Division round of the day with opening round even-par 72s. DiLisio and Sasaki combined to make seven birdies and 22 pars throughout their round. DiLisio played the back nine in a bogey free 1-under-par 35. Sasaki took advantage of the front nine by birdieing three holes.

ORLANDO, FL. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) announced its 2012-2013 All-IJGT Team during the Awards Banquet at the 2013 Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions held at Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, Fla. The top-10 players in each division in the season-long IJGT Merit Points Standings were named to the All-IJGT teams. The IJGT congratulates each of these players for their hardword over the course of the 2012-2013 season.

Northeast Tour

Cory Hoshor of Buffalo, W.Va. Hoshor was selected for this weeks Photo of the Week after his strong following on Facebook. Holsher is pictured here holding his first place trophy at the beautiful Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio. The Challenging course at Longaberger made for a tough weekend for every competitor, but Hoshor came out on top in the Boys 15-19 Division. His consistent play and strong iron game helped him earn his first IJGT Title. The International Junior Golf Tour congratulates Hoshor on his first win, and we look forward to seeing him at future events.

Players to Watch

Boys 15-19 Division

Mickey Werenski - During the entire 2012-13 season, Werenski has not finished outside the top 10 in any IJGT tournament. He has placed second four times and has six top-five finishes overall. Werenski will be attending Texas AM University in the fall to further his golfing career.

Roland Massimino - Massimino is coming off an IJGT Major Championship victory at Hershey Country Club. He has two victories and two second-place finishes in the 2012-2013 IJGT season.

Charlie Spencer-White - Since the start of the 2013, Spencer-White has played in six IJGT events and has placed in the top two in five of them. He's won twice at The Shootout at Colleton River and IJGT Family Weekend, while placing second in three events.

Ryan Garfield - Garfield has been a frequent competitor in the IJGT's West Coast Tour circuit. In the four events he has played in the 2012-2013 season, Garfield placed in the top five in three, including a victory in his first event, the NorCal Open at Eagle Ridge Golf Club.

Matt Cheng - Cheng has been nothing but consistent over the course of the IJGT season. In the 12 events he has played, he has finished in the top 10 in 10 of those events, including a victory at Duke University.

Boys 14 Under Division

John Felitto - Felitto has placed in the top 10 in every IJGT tournament he has played in the 2012-2013 season. He has two victories, including a Major Championship at Architects Golf Club.

Taisuke Ono - Ono entered the IJGT spring season after a very consistent fall season, but was unable to register a victory. However, the spring season was different where he was able to win twice while placing third in the two events between his victories.

Michael Ordona - Ordona placed in the top six in every IJGT event he played in the 2012-2013 season. He won his first event of the year at the SoCal Open at Legends Golf Club and placed second at the PURE Grips Jr. Open at Troon Golf Club.

Will Thomson - Thomson has been a regular on the Northeast Tour for the 2012-2013, dominating much of the competition. He played in 13 events throughout the year, winning four while placing second in six other events. Thomson placed in the top 10 in every event.

Tennoshin Ogawa - Ogawa recorded the most victories by a junior during the season with six. His victories included one at Hilton Head National and a victory at the prestigious Colleton River Plantation Club. Ogawa placed in the top six in all other Boys 14 Under Division events he entered.

Girls Division

Kelly Whaley - Whaley has been a fixture at the top of the Girls Division leaderboard during the 2012-2013 IJGT season. She has finished top six in six of the eight events she has played, including a victory and three second-place finishes.

Katie Edelblut - By placing top five in six of her seven events in the 2012-2013 IJGT season, Edelblut is primed for a solid showing at the Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions. In those six events, she come out victorious in two of them.

Rei Nakatani - 21-21. That's her record in the 2012-2013 IJGT season for placing in the top 10. Nakatani played in 21 events and placed in the top 10 in all of them. The most amazing thing about that record in the fact that only three of those finishes have been outside the top five, with the last one being all the way back in October. With that consistency, she will be near the top of the leaderboard come the final round.

Zora Moore - Moore became a familiar face on the Northeast Tour where she regularly found herself near the top of the leaderboard. Moore will look to ride her momentum of strong play after a second-place finish at the IJGT Major Championship at Hershey Country Club.

Ceha Lee - In a one month span from February 24th to March 24th, Lee played in four IJGT events and won three of them. She will look to channel that winning form at the Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions.

Players of the Week - May 18-19, 2013

NASHPORT, Ohio – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) traveled to the buckeye state for the first time of the season and visited the magnificent Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio. Longaberger did not let down its reputation for great course conditions and a challenging test for any golfer. However, Jake Sollon of Venetia, Pa., and Emily Doyle of Horseheads, N.Y., took on the challenge to earn themselves player of the week honors.

Jake Sollon already had a top-three finish at the Bridgestone Series at Greate Bay and a top-10 finish in the challenging field at the Major Championship at Nemacolin. Sollon came to Longaberger knowing he would have to put together another stellar performance in order to finish at the top of the leaderboard. He started the event off with a 44, Saturday, on the front nine. Determined to find a way back to the top of the leaderboard Sollon played outstanding for the rest of the event. He fired an impressive 37 on the back nine, which was complimented by two birdies. Trailing leader C.J. Hughes of Indiana, Pa., heading into the final round Sollon knew he had to be spot on in order to give Hughes a test coming down the final stretch. He did nothing short of this continuing his impressive play from Saturday. He started the day with a tough birdie on the par-4 second hole. From here he cruised to a 37 on the front nine, a remarkable seven strokes better than the day prior. The back nine featured the same kind of play as Sollon recorded eight pars in route to another 37 and a final-round 74. This earned him a second-place finish and his highest IJGT finish. The IJGT staff looks forward to watching the impressive play of Sollon as he is bound to bring home his first title in the near future.

Emily Doyle has been a familiar face in the 2012-2013 season, as she headed to Longaberger to play in her eighth event of the season. Not a stranger to the top of the leaderboard, Doyle has found herself in the top-10 in five of her seven appearances including a top-3 finish at the Major Championship at Nemacolin. Looking to improve on this she came out the first round and fired a 42 on the treacherous front nine at Longaberger. She followed this up with another 42 to finish with an 84 just one behind the leader. Knowing she had some work ahead of her on Sunday, she fired and impressive 39 on the front nine. On the back nine Doyle finished her event with a 44 recording her first second-place finish in an IJGT Event. Doyle’s consistently impressive play has not gone unnoticed and the IJGT looks for her to find her first title in the near future.

Hoshor takes home first IJGT title

Hughes captures crown at Longaberger

NASHPORT, Ohio - The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) hosted the final event in the Bridgestone Series at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio May 18-19. With beautiful conditions, 22 elite junior golfers representing five states competed for national recognition and IJGT Merit Points in this two-day 36-hole competition.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Cory Hoshor of Buffalo, W.Va., had a three-stroke lead heading into Sunday. Hoshor had a quick start on Saturday with a birdie and an eagle on the front nine, and carded a 4-over-par 76 in his first round. Hoshor also earned KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro honors for his impressive first-round play. With fellow competitor Jack Ford of Springboro, Ohio, close behind, Hoshor needed to bring his "A" game on Sunday.

Hoshor's final round did not start off the way he intended, but he quickly turned it around by making par on five consecutive holes to end his front nine. Ford was trailing by two strokes after the turn, which made for an exciting back nine. Hoshor made par on the first three holes on the back nine, which gave him the momentum to take home his first IJGT title. The par 3s were the difference maker for Hoshor, as he made par on every one carding a tournament total of 158.

"It feels so cool to win on this level with the IJGT being such a big tour," said Hoshor. "My iron game was on this weekend, and I was able to hit great approach shots that turned into birdies."

Finishing just behind Hosher was Ford, with a weekend score of 159. Rounding out the top three in the Boys 15-19 Division was Eddie Zhang of Murrysville, Pa., carding a weekend total of 163.

C.J. Hughes of Indiana, Pa., took home the title in the Boys 14 Under Division carding a first round 4-over-par 76. On Saturday, Hughes shot a 38 on the front nine, which included an impressive birdie on the tough par-3 ninth hole at Longaberger Golf Club. He also earned KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro honors for his first-round score. Hughes had a five-stroke lead over the competition going into the final round of play on Sunday.

"I just wanted to put the first round behind me and just have a clean slate for the second 18," said Hughes.

On Sunday, Hughes got off to a hot start with four birdies and no bogeys which put him at 4-under-par after the turn. He continued his great play by making birdie on the tough par-5 No. 10. Hughes’s finished with a 2-under-par 70 to round out a fantastic weekend. Hughes's spectacular second-round play earned him Clazic Belts Low Final Round honors and most importantly, his first IJGT Title.

"It feels really good to take home my first IJGT title." said Hughes. "It is going to help me heading into future tournaments."

Coming in second place was Jake Sollon of Venetia, Pa., with a final score of 155. Rounding out the top three in the Boys 14 Under Division was Angelo Mancinelli of Moosic, Pa., with a tournament total of 174.

In the Girls Division, Gillian Alexander of Rices Landing, Pa., took home the title in dramatic fashion. Alexander, who carded a first-round 83, earned KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro honors and had a one-stroke lead heading into Sunday. Emily Doyle of Horseheads, N.Y., trailed Alexander by one stroke and Audrey Clawson of Sarver, Pa., was close behind trailing by two strokes, which made for an exciting final round.

After a shaky start in her final round, Alexander found herself trailing Doyle by two strokes after the turn. After a strong first couple of holes on the back nine, Alexander and Doyle were even after 14 holes. Doyle made par on No. 16 and No. 17, which gave her a one-stroke lead heading into the final hole. Alexander saved her best shots for No. 18 as she stuck her approach shot 15 feet from the hole. She made par on No. 18, which was just enough to put her in first place at the Bridgestone Series at Longaberger.

"It feels really good to win," Alexander said. "It is definitely going to be a big confidence booster heading into my future tournaments."

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) alum Stephanie Meadow, who currently is a junior at the University of Alabama, has taken the women's college golf scene by storm. Over the 2012-2013 season her accomplishments have been many including back-to-back wins at the Southeastern Conference Championship and the NCAA Regional Championship at Auburn University. Her biggest college tournament of the year is still to come when Meadow and her Alabama teammates travel to the University of Georgia Golf Course for the 2013 NCAA Championships May 21-24.

Alabama will be one of the favorties going into the National Championship as they will look to defend their title. Meadow is also in the running for the National Player of the Year. Currently she is ranked No. 2 by Golfweek and No. 1 by Golfstat in all of college golf. The numbers do not lie. Meadow has the lowest scoring average in the entire nation and has performed her best in the most important tournaments. While playing on the IJGT, Meadow collected many championships including the 2009 IJGT Tournament of Champions. Playing in highly competitive tournaments as a junior golfer has allowed Meadow to exceed at such a high level at the University of Alabama.

This last tournament, The Bridgestone Series at Longaberger , is held on the No. 1 ranked course you can play by Golfweek in the state of Ohio. Points will be awarded to the top 10 players in the Boys 15-19, Boys 14 Under and Girls Divisions in each of the denoted events in the Bridgestone Tournament Series. The following is the breakdown for points per event:

1st - 110 points 6th - 50 points

2nd - 95 points 7th - 40 points

3rd - 80 points 8th - 30 points

4th - 70 points 9th - 20 points

5th - 60 points 10th - 10 points

If there are ties for a specific place, the points will be split evenly. For example, a three player tie for 2nd Place would result in each player receiving 81.67 points (245 total points for 2nd (95), 3rd (80) and 4th (70), divided evenly among three players). In order to receive points toward the Bridgestone Tournament Series players must play a Bridgestone Ball.

West Coast Tour

This week’s Photo of the Week features Cole Shintaku, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii. Shintaku, pictured here teeing off on the first hole, tied for second place in last weekend’s PURE Grips Shootout at Troon North. Shintaku kept his shots straight and consistent on Sunday as evidenced by his birdie on the par-5 11th hole. Troon North is a beautiful course carved out of the desert of Scottsdale, Ariz., that forces golfers to make aggressive plays that can quickly ruin a day’s score. Shintaku managed to reign in the desert and finish the weekend with both a second-place finish as well as Photo of the Week honors. The International Junior Golf Tour was excited to have Shintaku travel from the islands of Hawaii and looks forward to seeing him in the future.

Southeast Tour

It has been quite a week for Aaron Elmore of Rincon, Ga., who is pictured above with his second-place trophy in the Orlando Junior at Falcons Fire Golf Club. Things started well on Sunday with a strong finish in the tournament. Next, Elmore earned Player of the Week honors, and today he is the featured Photo of the Week. Every accolade is well deserved, as Elmore played his first tournament event outside the IJGT Discovery Tour. Elmore managed to keep up with older and more experienced competitors and string together some great shots over the weekend. Finishing in second place is one thing, but to be the youngest player in the field and maintain composure all weekend is a big accomplishment. Congratulations to Elmore, and the IJGT cannot wait to see how his game develops.

Northeast Tour

The IJGT Major Championship at Hershey last weekend was a great opportunity for golfers to showcase their talents, compete against one another, and hopefully learn from the experience of Hank Haney himself. C.J. Hughes of Indiana, Pa., pictured here, did not let the opportunity pass him by, and finished second in the Major Championship. Besides Hughes’s impressive second-place finish over the weekend, he has also finished in the top 10 for five of his last six events played on the IJGT this season. His scorecard for the IJGT Major Championship at Hershey included back-to-back birdies that helped keep him afloat during the final round. Congratulations on what has become a fantastic season on the IJGT, and for earning this week’s Photo of the Week honors.

Suzy Whaley to Speak at Night of Champions Banquet

The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) is proud to announce Suzy Whaley, the first woman since Babe Zaharias to qualify and participate in a PGA Tour event, will be speaking at the annual Night of Champions Banquet, part of the IJGT's end-of-year Tournament of Champions.

Whaley has been named to Golf Digest's top 50 teachers and top 5 national female instructors. She has also been named the Northeast Teacher of the Year twice and a two-time PGA Teacher of the Year honoree in the Connecticut PGA Section. LPGA She serves as a board member for the following golf associations:

Whaley earned her LPGA Tour status immediately after college where she competed for two years before starting a family. Northeast Tour

The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) made its second to last trip of the Northeast Tour at Hershey Country Club for the IJGT Major Championship Presented by Hank Haney IJGA this past weekend. This Event is one of many golfers’ favorites and most importantly was our second Major Championship of the Northeast Tour. The course was in spectacular shape all weekend and a true test to all golfers. However, the weather did not help the players with scattered showers on Saturday and wind gust of nearly 20 mph on Sunday. Through the tough conditions, C.J. Hughes of Indiana, Pa., and Zora Moore of Milford, N.J., overcame the adverse conditions and earned Player of the Week honors.

Hughes is no stranger to IJGT tournaments. He has played in six events this season and had four top-10 finishes including back-to-back top-five finishes in the Boys 14 Under Division. This weekend Hughes was determined to finish strong for the final Major of the 2012-2013 IJGT Northeast Season. He got off to a good start on the first day with all pars and three bogeys on the front nine and some confidence going into the back nine. Hughes kept the momentum going after the turn starting with a birdie and finishing with all pars and one bogey carding an impressive 3-over-par 74 and even-par on the back nine.

This great showing put Hughes in second place going into the final round, only one stroke back of the leader Evan Katz of Washington, D.C.. On Sunday the weather conditions were even worse. Battling the winds, Hughes once again showed poise and consistency. He started off the second round a little slow, but bounced back with impressive back-to-back birdies on holes Nos. 5 and 6. Hughes battled Katz all weekend, but ultimately fell short of the title. Although he fell short of a title, he did tie for a second-place finish and his first of the 2012-2013 IJGT Season. We would like to congratulate C.J. Hughes on a great weekend and look forward to seeing him in Orlando, Fla., for the Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions.

In the Girls Division, Moore earned herself a well-deserved Player of the Week honor. This was Moore’s third IJGT tournament of the Northeast Tour, where she placed second with an 81-80—161 final score. Moore was very consistent with her game all weekend, which was not easy to do considering the brutal weather conditions. Seeking her first IJGT title, Moore received her second, second-place finish this past weekend. Moore was down three strokes going into Sunday’s round so she knew she would have to go low on Sunday’s round. Moore went on to par 10 holes on her final day, carding a 9-over-par 80 and a second-place finish. We would like to congratulate Zora Moore on a great tournament, and we wish her the best of luck at the Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions.

Southeast Tour

Last weekend, the International Junior Golf Tour traveled to Orlando, Fla., for the Orlando Junior at Falcon’s Fire Golf Club. Players were introduced to both a magnificent Rees Jones designed course in the peak of its condition as well as the unpredictable weather of central Florida. While known for sunshine, Orlando delivered a nasty dose of rain that bogged the course down for Sunday and added a new dimension of difficulty for the final round. What could have been a disastrous day for most, a few players managed to step up to the challenge and take the course head on.

Aaron Elmore has been a regular player on the IJGT Discovery Tour since his debut in November at Oyster Reef where he finished in first place. Aaron has performed well on the Discovery Tour, finishing first, second, or third in six of seven tournaments. Elmore made an exciting leap into the Boys 14 Under Division over the weekend, and finished in an astonishing second place. It is quite an achievement when his graduation year, 2020, is taken into consideration. Elmore did not let a lack of experience stand in his way, and showed great poise and course management en route to carding a day-to-day score of 88-81. He also managed to lead the division in par-3 performance with a 3.38 average. The IJGT wishes Aaron the best, and is very excited to watch this young player develop in future tournaments.

Wei-Wei Zhang, playing in her first IJGT event as part of the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy, finished in an impressive third place. Zhang carded a final-round score of 1-under-par 71, a noteworthy achievement considering the increased difficulty of the course from Saturday to Sunday. Besides going 1-under-par on Sunday, Zhang also scored an incredible 28 pars on the weekend, which placed her second in the division in that category. Zhang showed great maturity, poise, and confidence en route to her third-place finish and the IJGT looks forward to seeing her in the future.

West Coast Tour

Troon North, an exquisite golf course carved out of the High Sonoran Desert in Scottsdale, Ariz., was host to an exciting weekend of competition at the PURE Grips Shootout at Troon North. The moments of awe and wonder at the incredible beauty of the desert course are short lived, as it certainly burned more than a few players over the weekend. Temperatures hovered in the 90’s both days and turned the Monument course into a test of stamina, precision and practical course management.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Thomas Avant finished with a final score of 78-80 and finished in second place. Avant was able to card three well-executed birdies over the weekend while also keeping small mistakes to a minimum. Highlights for Avant include leading the division with a 4.15 par-4 average while also managing to card 19 pars over the course of the weekend. Avant has a lot to be proud of after his performance on the daunting Monument Course.

Moibhi Tyndall, playing in his third IJGT West Coast event, was ready for the challenges of desert golf. Tyndall made smart decisions throughout the weekend that set him up for an impressive second-place finish in the Boys 14 Under Division. Tyndall's positive attitude and head-on approach to the difficult course earn him Player of the Week honors, and the IJGT hopes to see Tyndall in action again soon.

Final Results from the IJGT Major Championship presented by Hank Haney IJGA

HERSHEY, Pa. - Heavy rain and wind did not halt the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) from hosting the Major Championship at Hershey presented by the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy (IJGA) in Hershey, Pa. Competitors were not stopped by the conditions either, as they proved capable of battling every factor this weekend. Representing eight states, 120 of the tours’ elite junior golfers competed for national recognition and double IJGT Merit Points on the PGA TOUR tested East Course at Hershey Country Club during this two day, 36-hole event.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Roland Massimino of Lumberville, Pa., battled the elements and took home his second IJGT title of the season. Massimino earned KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro honors after carding a first-round even-par 71 on Saturday. With Brock Kovach of Wyomissing, Pa., only three strokes behind heading into Sunday, Massimino knew the final round was going to be a test.

"I did not want to think of my score on Saturday," said Massimino. "I just wanted to take it shot by shot."

Massimino got off to a rocky start on Sunday, but quickly turned it around with a birdie on No. 2, a tough par 3. After paring six more holes on the front nine, he took a lead of one stroke to the back nine over Kovach. Massimino only made one bogey on the back nine, and carded a final round 4-over-par 75. His steady play on Sunday was exactly what he needed to take home the Major title.

"I have been playing well and working hard the past couple of weeks," said Massimino. "It feels really good to take a Major title."

Finishing in second place just behind Massimino was Kovach, carding a 6-over-par 148 final score. Kovach also earned Clazic Belts Low Final Round honors, battling the conditions to post a 3-over-par 74. Rounding out the top three in the Boys 15-19 Division was William Voetsch of New Vernon, N.J. Voetsch finished his weekend with a 10-over-par 152 final score.

Matt Holuta of Indiana, Pa., also earned Clazic Belts Low Final Round Honors with his 3-over-par 74 final-round score.

Evan Katz of Washington, D.C., took home the title in the Boys 14 Under Division in dramatic fashion. Katz carded a 3-over-par 74 during his first round, and led the competition by just one stroke. With a very talented field behind him, Katz needed to carry his momentum into Sunday's final round.

"I knew it was going to be windy {in the final round}," said Katz. "I just had to hit the ball solid and avoid large numbers."

Katz started his second round off strong with a quick birdie on the par-3 second hole, but C.J. Hughes of Indiana, Pa., lead at the turn with a 1-over-par 37 on the front nine. After many lead changes on the back nine, Katz and Hughes found themselves tied on the par-5 18th hole at Hershey Country Club. Hughes was forced to lay up after his tee shot and found an unfortunate lie, while Katz hit the green in regulation. Katz made par on No. 18 and took home his first IJGT title after carding a weekend 8-over-par 150.

"I have been playing very well lately," said Katz. "It feels so good to finally win my first IJGT Title!"

Finishing just behind and rounding out the Boys 14 Under Division was Hughes and Evan Johnson of Rye, N.Y., both carding a total score of 10-over-par 152.

In the Girls Division, Liza Freed of Alexandria, Va., played an impressive final round on Sunday in the windy elements to take home her first IJGT Title. Freed carded an 8-over-par 79 in her first round, and trailed KENTWOOL Lo-Pro Award winner Alessandra Ricigliano of Scarsdale, N.Y., by one stroke heading into Sunday.

"Going into Sunday I was not thinking about being down a stroke," said Freed. "I just wanted to focus on each one of my shots."

Freed did not start her final round of competition the way she intended, but quickly turned it around on her fourth hole by paring four consecutive holes. After carding a 5-over-par 41 on the front nine, Freed was still one stroke out of the lead heading to the back nine. Freed took a commanding lead on the back nine after paring the first four holes. This consistent play never let up, leading to her first IJGT title. Freed carded a weekend 17-over-par 159. Freed also earned Clazic Belt Low Final Round Honors after carding a 9-over-par 80 during her final round.

"It feels so good to win my first IJGT Title" said Freed. "I really was not focusing on my scores, but I am very happy that I won!"

Finishing in second in the Girls Division was Zora Moore of Milford, N.J., who carded a tournament 19-over-par 161. Moore also earned Clazic Belts Low Final Round honors carding a 9-over-par 80. Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division were Ashley Yarbrough of Akron, Ohio, and Ricigliano, who both carded a final score of 164.

Velez defends Falcon’s Fire title

Whaley holds on as Girls Division Champion

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) held the Orlando Junior at Falcon’s Fire Golf Club in Kissimmee, Fla., May 11-12. Juniors endured very warm temperatures with moderate humidity at the Rees Jones designed golf course. The tournament acts as a great tune-up for IJGT’s Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions.

Manuel Velez of Panama City, Panama, winner of the IJGT’s 2012 Florida Swing at Falcon’s Fire, defended his title to win the Boys 15-19 Division, shooting 1-under-par for a two-day total of 143. Velez took fire at the hole locations, recording nine birdies and one eagle over two rounds. His best play came on the par 5s where he played them in 5-under-par.

Velez did not go unchallenged however, as Yan Peng of Beijing, China kept pace the entire tournament. Over two days, Peng played the front nine in a bogey-free 3-under-par.

With Velez holding onto a one shot lead heading into No. 18, both he and Peng striped drives down the middle of the fairway. As both players were in great position, Peng was the one who took advantage and hit the green, while Velez short-sided himself in the greenside bunker.

Velez was able to make a difficult up-and-down seem ordinary, blasting out of the bunker to only a few feet. Peng had a birdie opportunity from about 25 feet to force a tie, but it was not meant to be. Velez converted his par putt to win by one stroke.

Coming in third place was Matt Cheng of Taipei, Taiwan, who carded an even-par 72 on the final day.

Payton Olsen of Winter Park, Fla., received the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for his 3-under-par 69.

Alan Xu of Hilton Head Island, S.C., shot 81 on both days to take home the Boys 14 Under Division title. Xu said he played “awesome” during the final round, which showed, recording a score no higher than a five for the entire day. He played consistently for the day with nine pars and nine bogeys.

Aaron Elmore of Rincon, Ga., took home second place honors in the division shooting a solid 81 in the final round. This was Elmore’s first event in the division, but he had played a number of previous events in the IJGT’s Discovery Tour. Third place in the Boys 14 Under Division was Kotaro Nishimura of Ota-Ku, Japan.

In the Girls Division, Kelly Whaley of Farmington Conn., came out victorious with an impressive 1-under-par 143 two-day total. Whaley stayed patient and played consistently en route to her victory. She recorded five birdies and 27 pars over the weekend, including 15 pars during the final round.

“I told myself there were a lot of holes left to birdie,” Whaley said. “If it gets close, you know you still have holes left. I had a one-shot lead on the last hole and had to be confident I would par it.”

Whaley stumbled early as she recorded a 2-over-par 38 on her first nine holes, including a bogey on the opening hole. It was different after the turn however, making birdie on her 10^th hole then paring the rest of her remaining holes.

Thamonpat Siriko of Bangkok, Thailand, made it difficult for Whaley during the final round, always hanging within one or two strokes of the lead. Siriko put on her own impressive final round, recording two birdies and 15 pars to shoot a 1-under-par 71 which was good enough to earn her second place. Wei-Wei Zhang of Howey in the Hills, Fla., took home third-place honors after also shooting a 1-under-par 71. Both Siriko and Zhang earned the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for their performances.

The KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro Award, which goes to the players who shoot the lowest score in the first round of every IJGT Event, was won by Velez with a score of 1-under-par 71 and Whaley with a score of 2-under-par 70.

The International Junior Golf Tour will travel back to the Orlando, Fla. area in two weeks to host its annual Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions at Grand Cypress Resort May 25-27. Christifulli captures crown at Troon North

Nam earns first IJGT title in Boys 14 Under Division

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) hosted the PURE Grips Shootout at Troon North Golf Club on May 11-12. The Scottsdale heat played a factor as the competitors trudged up and down the hills on the Monument Course at Troon North. Two champions were crowned giving their mothers an unforgettable Mother’s Day present.

Michael Christifulli of Paradise Valley, Ariz., earned his first IJGT title of the season after putting together a gritty final-round score of 5-over-par 77. On Saturday, Christfulli got off to a hot start going 1-under-par in his first eight holes. After an even-par 36 on the front nine, he ran into a few obstacles on the difficult back nine to finish with a score of 3-over-par 75.

Christifulli was not alone atop the leaderboard after Saturday’s round. TJ Kathrineberg of Mesa, Ariz., had a share of the lead with a 3-over-par 75. Both players earned KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro Award honors with their first-round score.

Sunday was a tough day for scoring conditions as the round from Saturday physically drained many of the competitors. The Monument Course tests your playing ability as well as your physical ability. Christifulli was determined to come up with the victory because he wanted redemption after not being able to play in the PURE Grips Junior Open back on Dec 8-9, 2012 at Troon North – Pinnacle Course. Down the stretch, Christifulli made two key birdies on the back nine that gave him the cushion he needed to secure the victory.

"My plan was to put the ball in play,” said Christifulli. “I knew that approach would give me a chance, but I also tried to make some good putts."

Coming in second place was Thomas Avant of Chandler, Ariz., finishing with a tournament total of 158. Finishing in a tie for third place were Jackson Whisenhunt of Phoenix, Ariz., and Kathrineberg carding a 159 tournament score over the weekend.

In the Boys 14 Under Division, Mason Nam of Scottsdale, Ariz., ran away with his first IJGT title after putting together a solid final-round score of 5-over-par 77. Nam got off to a slow start on Saturday carding a front-nine score of 5-over-par 41. Things turned around quickly on the back nine where Nam made three birdies en route to a 2-under-par 34. His score of 3-over-par 75 earned him KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro Award honors.

On Sunday, Nam got off to a great start playing his first 12 holes in 1-over-par. His fellow competitors could not match his great start giving Nam a clear path to victory. Although he did not finish as strong as he would like, Nam was still very pleased with his victory.

"Definitely one of the hardest courses I have played in a tournament,” said Nam. “It was in really good condition.”

Finishing in a tie for second place were Cole Shintaku of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Moibhi Tyndall of Mountain View, Calif., with scores of 162.

The Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award went to the champions Christifulli and Nam for their scores of 5-over-par 77.

The IJGT West Coast tour has completed for the 2012-2013 season. The IJGT will be closing out the season with the Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions on May 25-27 at Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, Fla. Notes from the First Round - PURE Grips Shootout

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Warm temperatures and an abnormal breeze made scoring conditions very difficult at the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) PURE Grips Shootout at Troon North Golf Club. The Event was contested on the Monument Course, which is ranked the No. 5 "Best Course You Can Play" in Arizona by Golfweek.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Michael Christifulli of Paradise Valley, Ariz., and TJ Kathrineberg of Mesa, Ariz., both finished the day with solid scores of 3-over-par 75. The Monument Course was not yielding many low scores and they were able to card the lowest round of the day by avoiding big numbers which are common because of the desert areas located so close to the fairways. Tomorrow's final round will be a great battle between these two players and the other couple competitors that are within striking distance of the lead.

Aaron Terrazas shines at Mexican Junior National Championship

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C - On May 4-6, the Mexican Golf Federation held the Mexican Junior National Championship at El Tigre Golf Club in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. The tournament field was loaded with the best talent Mexico has to offer, and IJGT member Aaron Terrazas of Veracruz, Mexico, won the tournament with a score of 5-under-par 211.

Terrazas started off the tournament well carding a tournament best 4-under-par 68 to grab an early lead, but he only held a one-stroke lead going into the second round. After an even-par 72 in round two, Terrazas increased his lead to five strokes on a day that saw scores increase due to tougher playing conditions and course setup.

Terrazas has proven in International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) tournaments that he is a closer with his four victories in the 2012-2013 season including one at the AB Golf Designs Thanksgiving Day Classic at TPC Sawgrass. It was no different in the final round at the Mexican Junior National Championship where Terrazas fired a 1-under-par 71 to complete his wire-to-wire victory.

Terrazas does not get many opportunities to compete in Mexico because of his rigorous tournament schedule in the United States when training at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy in Bluffton, S.C.

"It feels awesome to win after three years without playing tournaments in my country," said Terrazas.

With the victory Terrazas earned an invitation to the International Junior Championship in Colombia. He also earned an exemption to the American Junior Golf Association's Junior Players Championship which is held at the site of this week's PGA TOUR The Players Championship, TPC Sawgrass.

Northeast Tour

Ben Brason tees off another gem while competing in last weekend’s AB Golf Designs Junior at Ravenwood Golf Club. Brason, competing in his third International Junior Golf Tour Event, is shown here in this week’s Photo of the Week. Ravenwood Golf Club served as the host of what turned out to be a beautiful weekend in Victor, N.Y. Brason, a native of East Aurora, N.Y., showed considerable improvement across the two day competition. After carding a first round 89, Brason completed the final round at 86 – a three-stroke improvement that is a direct result of Brason’s improved course management from Saturday to Sunday. Congratulations to Brason on his performance at the AB Golf Designs Junior and for being this week’s Photo of the Week!

West Coast Tour

Presley Mackelburg of Reno, Nev., pictured here in this week’s Photo of the Week, tees off in front of a majestic panorama of downtown Reno, Nev. Over the weekend at the IJGT Reno Junior, Mackelburg competed in the Boys 14 Under Division, and played a solid weekend of golf on the intimidating Legend Course at ArrowCreek Country Club. Saturday scores were high for most of the field, but Mackleberg managed to card an 83 on the first day and 85 on Sunday. His scores earned him second place at the Reno Junior over the weekend, and highlighting the round is a fantastic birdie made on the difficult fourth hole on the Legend Course. Mackleberg, shown here in his final-round outfit, is also known amongst his group of friends as “Little Fowler” – a reference to IJGT alum and current PGA TOUR player Rickie Fowler.

Southeast Tour

Isidora Quevedo of Santiago, Chile, is pictured here in this week’s Photo of the Week after collecting a total of 13 points in likes and comments. Quevedo is shown here after the Awards Ceremony at the AHEAD Open at Bear Creek. After carding back-to-back scores of 79, Quevedo took home the third-place award for the weekend that saw its share of soggy course conditions. Despite the ugly weather conditions, Quevedo managed to make five birdies over the weekend while also keeping a close rein on careless mistakes. The IJGT enjoys having Quevedo as a regular player on the Tour, and looks forward to seeing her play again soon.

This Week in Mental Training: Keys to Success

Last week’s installment of “this week in mental training” spoke about the jump from high school to college. The first year of this transition can be a difficult yet enjoyable experience. We are pleased about the excitement our post-graduates and seniors are showing in making this next step toward a life in the professional world.

The final weeks of the semester will serve as an opportunity to review some of the key principles we are hoping our student-athletes will carry with them throughout the summer and beyond. These keys to development include:

1) Challenge is required to build skill throughout the learning and development process of life and sport.

2) By embracing challenge a mindset is created that seeks out challenge while also appreciating that growth and development is a difficult process that requires acceptance of mistakes.

3) Consistently challenging oneself can be a drain on the limited resource of effort and attention required to build skills. Our student-athletes should also be aware of the importance recovery plays in the development process to assist with resiliency and the prevention of burnout.

It’s been a pleasure working with the student-athletes of Junior Sports Corporation again this year! We hope they carry these messages with them and continue to build effective habits wherever the journey of life takes them moving forward.

Northeast Tour

VICTOR, N.Y. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) hosted their eighth event of the Northeast tour May 4-5 at Ravenwood Golf Club. The weather could not have been better this weekend. There was not a cloud in the sky and temperatures soared into the mid 70s. Ravenwood Golf Club was in top notch condition. The greens rolled true, providing an opportunity for the players to card low scores. Two players stood out this weekend and came ready to play. This week’s Highlighted Players of the Week winners are Ezekiel Zhao of Annapolis, Md., and Molly Balbierz of Hamburg, N.Y.

Zhao competed in just his fourth tournament with the IJGT this past weekend in the Boys 15-19 Division. Zhao fired a 3-over-par 75 on Saturday, trailing the leader by one stroke heading into Sunday’s round. Zhao knew he has to go low on Sunday’s round to have a chance in placing in the top three. He did just that. Zhao had three birdies on the front nine and a birdie on the back nine. He went on to shoot a 4-over-par 76 for a combined total of 151. This was Zhao’s first top-three finish with the IJGT, earning him this week’s Highlighted Player of the Week honors. Congratulations Ezekiel on a great performance at Ravenwood Golf Club, and hope to see you in future tournaments with the IJGT.

In the Girls Division, Balbierz of Hamburg, N.Y., earned player of the week honors. Balbierz has played in two tournaments with us this season, finishing in the top 10 in each event. On Saturday, she showed consistency in her round making nine pars and carding 14-over-par 86. Balbierz was down 8 strokes going into the final round, but was determined to make a run at the title.

The conditions were even better on Sunday and Balbierz got off to a fast start. She made par on the first three of five holes and felt she had a chance for a top-three finish. Balbierz stayed very consistent throughout the day with nine pars and nine bogeys. Although she came up short of an IJGT title, her outstanding play and no double-bogeys or worse on the final day helped her in carding a 9-over-par 81. Her final score of 86-81—167 earned her a tie for second place with Kristen Bromley of Pittsford, N.Y. We would like to congratulate Molly Balbierz on a great weekend and wish her nothing but the best in her future in golf.

Southeast Tour

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- The International Golf Tour (IJGT) hosted the AHEAD Open at Bear Creek on May 4-5, 2013. Bear Creek Golf Club offered juniors a test with the fast greens and narrow fairways. Along with a demanding course, golfers were challenged by rain during their final round. Play was suspended for two hours due to a heavy downpour in the morning. After the delay, players still were faced with on-and-off rain throughout the afternoon. Shogo Ito of Tokyo, Japan, and Isidora Quevedo of Santiago, Chile, were both able to stay focused with the difficult conditions earning them Player of the Week honors.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Ito got off to a great start during his first round by making birdie on the first hole. He carded an 81 on Saturday and was nine strokes behind the lead in a tie for seventh place. During his final round, Ito made a run of three birdies on holes three through five. He carded a front-nine 35, en route to shooting 1-over-par 73. His score on Sunday earned him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award. Ito moved into third place for the AHEAD Open at Bear Creek after his impressive final round. His finish this past weekend was his fourth top 10 of the Spring Season. The IJGT Staff looks forward to seeing Ito at the Bridgestone Tournament of Champions on May 25-27.

In the Girls Division, Quevedo came into the event looking for another strong finish after earning third place in the Shamrock Shootout at Palmetto Hall. Quevedo spent her 17th birthday competing in the first round of the event. Her round was highlighted by birdies on holes one and three. After carding a first-round 79, Quevedo was in third place, four strokes behind the leader. On Sunday, Quevedo made birdies on the holes Nos. 5 and 12 and shot another round of 79. Her consistency over the weekend earned her third place. Her finish at the AHEAD Open at Bear Creek was her fifth top-five of the year. The IJGT Staff looks forward to seeing more great play from Quevedo in the future.

West Coast Tour

During last weekend’s IJGT Reno Junior at ArrowCreek Country Club, players were forced to take on the difficult Legend Course in the midst of weather conditions found in all four seasons. First-round scores were higher mostly due to the howling winds that added an extra bite to the challenging Arnold Palmer designed Legend Course. But as much as ArrowCreek showed it’s teeth over the weekend, Patrick Phelps and Alice Duan of Reno, Nev., were up for the challenge.

Phelps carded a first-round score of 90 and could have easily chalked up the performance to the windy conditions and difficult course management situations. Instead, he came back in the final round to score an outstanding 2-over-par 74. Phelps’s score on Sunday is even more remarkable due in part to the bitter cold, gusting winds, and brief moments of rain that were present throughout the day. Phelps’s Sunday scorecard included birdies on three of five par 5s, and nine-hole scores of 37-37 after going 49-41 on Saturday.

Phelps’s ability to come back after a disappointing first round and improve a whopping 16 strokes earned him a third-place finish and Player of the Week honors at the IJGT Reno Junior.

Duan, playing in her second IJGT event, showed great course management, maturity, and poise on her way to a first-place finish at the Reno Junior at ArrowCreek Country Club. Duan’s first round score of 5-over-par 77 put her atop the leaderboard, and helped secure the victory despite a difficult final round. Duan carded three birdies in that round and handled the par 3s with confidence. This is Duan’s first tour victory this season, after taking eighth place at the IJGT Golden Gate Junior back in February. The IJGT hopes to see Duan at more events in the future.

IJGT travels to Ohio for Bridgestone Series at Longaberger May 18-19, 2013

Longaberger Golf Club will be open for optional practice rounds and registration May 17 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Bridgestone Series at Longaberger will begin with opening round tee times May 18 at 12 p.m. and will end with an awards ceremony recognizing the top-3 juniors in each division with tournament gifts and trophies.

Miles outlasts weather to win AHEAD Open

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) hosted the AHEAD Open at Bear Creek Golf Club May 4-5. AHEAD, a high quality golf apparel company specializing in headwear, sponsored the event where every golfer received a free hat. Constant rain threatened the tournament, but the beautiful Rees Jones design course was able to withstand.

Will Miles of Hilton Head Island, S.C., overcame tough playing conditions and his fellow competitors to take home the Boys 15-19 Division title. Miles put together a wonderfully consistent opening round of even-par 72, buoyed by 15 pars and two birdies on holes 11 and 12. Miles’s ability to control his speed on these fast greens and his solid ball striking in the wind vaulted him to the victory. His play during the first round was good enough for the KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro Award for lowest first round score.

“It was pretty scoreable out there,” Miles said. “The greens were holding pretty well. Today was a little tough because of all the water, but just footing was the main problem.”

Miles was a model of consistency during the final round as well recording 14 pars and one birdie leading to a 3-over-par 75. Of the 36 holes Miles played this weekend, 29 of them were pars while adding in three birdies. He played all of the par 3s in 1-over-par, all of the par 4s in 1-over-par, and all of the par 5s in 1-over-par as well.

Coming in second and third place were Charlie Spencer-White of Bluffton, S.C., and Shogo Ito of Tokyo, Japan, who both shot 1-over-par 73 during the final round to win the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

In the Boys 14 Under Division, Alejandro Santibanez of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, had a significant lead after round one with a seven shot advantage, shooting a 4-over par 76. On Sunday, difficult weather affected play, but Santibanez was able to stay mentally tough to card two birdies on his way to a final round 80.

“I worked on tempo coming in this week,” Santibanez said. “I knew the greens were going to be really fast.”

Christian Garruppo of Pottersville, N.J., came in second place with a tournament total of 164, while Evan White of Hilton Head Island, S.C., rounded out the top three finishing with a tournament score of 96. Both players shot great final rounds of 81 considering the weather.

The winner in the Girls Division was Clementina Rodriguez of Caracas, Venezuela, firing a final round 1-over-par 73 to come from one shot behind. Rodriguez attacked the softer greens en route to recording four birdies on the day and six birdies overall for the tournament. After making a double-bogey on the par-5 fourth hole, she bounced right back with a birdie playing the rest of her round in only 1-over-par.

“It rained a lot and the course was really wet,” Rodriguez said. “I was able to do the best I could and play well.”

For her final-round 1-over-par 73, Rodriguez was awarded the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

The KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro Award winner was Phimnipha Wongwaiwate of Chiang Mai, Thailand, who carded a 3-over-par 75 in round one. Wongwaiwate shot a final round 79 to take second place. Isidora Quevedo from Santiago, Chile also shot 79 on Sunday finishing with a tournament score of 158 to take third place.

With their victories today, Miles and Rodriguez have earned a spot in the Callaway Junior World Championships, which will take place July 15-19, 2013 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, Calif. It is the largest junior golf event in the world, which includes participants from 56 countries and 42 states.

“I am really excited because that is a really big tournament,” Rodriguez said. “I have never been to San Diego so I am happy that I am going.”

Holetz triumphs at ArrowCreek

Duan delivers in the Girls Division

RENO, Nev. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) hosted the Reno Junior at ArrowCreek Country Club on May 4-5. Breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada mountain range greeted the competitors on the Legend Course at ArrowCreek Country Club during the 36-hole competition. High winds made scoring difficult challenging the mental toughness of the entire field.

Harrison Holetz of Incline Village, Nev., took home his first IJGT title after putting together two great rounds on the weekend. Saturday, he began his round with a bogey on the first hole, but quickly responded with two birdies in his next five holes. After struggling for two holes, Holetz hit the best shot of the tournament on No. 9, which lead to an eagle on the 593 yard par-5. Holetz carried the momentum to the back nine giving him a 1-over-par 73 on the day. This was the lowest score of the day, giving him the KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro Award.

Going into Sunday’s final round, Holetz had a three-stroke lead over David Hinitz of Reno, Nev. It quickly tightened up as Holetz made a few costly mistakes in the first 11 holes. After Hinitz made birdie on No. 14 on the Legend Course at ArrowCreek Country Club, the Boys 15-19 Division was tied. This is when Holetz turned it up a notch. He finished par-eagle-birdie-par to capture the title and finish his day with a 5-over-par 77.

“Today, I had a funky front nine and then on the back, I started really bad, but came back at the end with par-eagle-birdie-par,” commented Holetz. “So that was helpful.”

The key to Holetz’s success was his dominance on the par 5s. He played them in 5-under-par over the course of the weekend.

Hinitz could not match Holetz’s finish, but was still able to secure second place with a solid tournament total of 153. Finishing in third place was Patrick Phelps of Reno, Nev., who recorded a tournament score of 164. Phelps’s final-round score of 2-over-par 74 earned him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

Alice Duan of Reno, Nev., took home the crown in the Girls Division after putting together two solid rounds at ArrowCreek Country Club. Duan’s 5-over-par 77 on Saturday was very impressive and the best score in the Girls Division in the tournament. Her round was highlighted by three birdies and 10 pars. Duan played her last seven holes in 1-under-par.

On Sunday, the rain and wind caused issues for many players including Duan. She was not able to replicate her success from Saturday missing many putts by mere inches. However, because she built herself a sizeable lead she cruised to victory with an 85 on Sunday. Her final-round score earned her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award. This was Duan’s first IJGT title and

“Well the first day was really nice for me,” said Duan. “I made a few crucial putts and my irons were great…they put me in a good position to score.”

Finishing in second place in the Girls Division was Carly Farthing of Reno, Nev., with a tournament score of 175. Michelle Duan of Reno, Nev., took home third place after her tournament total of 179.

In the Boys 14 Under Division, Griffin Cooper of Yerington, Nev., finally came out on top earning his first IJGT victory in comeback fashion on Sunday at ArrowCreek. After a sub-standard 84 in the first round, Cooper responded with a solid 5-over-par 77 on Sunday to win the tournament by seven strokes. Trailing by one stroke going into the final round, Cooper knew he was going to have to avoid some of the large numbers he had on his scorecard from the previous day. Sunday’s round included two birdies and not a single score on his card worse than bogey.

“This week I felt confident in my putting,” said Cooper. “It really saved me in a lot of areas, even when I made dumb mistakes and missed opportunities.”

Finishing in second place in the Boys 14 Under Division was Presley Mackelburg of Reno, Nev., who carded a tournament total of 168 over the weekend. Taking third place was Cole Skach of Reno, Nev., finishing with a tournament score of 189.

The IJGT West Coast tour will be hosting the PURE Grips Shootout at Troon North in Scottsdale, Ariz., on May 11-12. Van Niekerk takes home first IJGT Title

Notaro earns comeback victory

VICTOR, N.Y. - The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) played host to the AB Golf Designs Junior at the beautiful Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor, N.Y. 46 elite junior golfers representing five states competed for national recognition and IJGT Merit Points. Players and spectators were greeted with sunny skies and warm weather during this two day, 36-hole tournament.

The Boys 15-19 Division came down to the back nine, where Matthew Van Niekerk of Rochester, N.Y., took home the title. Van Niekerk had a solid first round carding a 6-over-par 78, but found himself trailing first-round leader Alec Miller of Pittsford, N.Y., by four strokes.

"I missed a lot of putts {in the first round}," said Van Niekerk. "I just took it easy when I got home, and told myself I have nothing to lose in the second round."

Van Niekerk started his second round off strong,with two birdies and a spectacular eagle on the par-5 sixth hole carding a front-nine 4-under-par 32. He found himself tied with Miller at the turn, which made for an exciting finish on the back nine. Van Niekerk shot even-par on the back nine putting him in the clubhouse at 2-over-par 146. Miller needed to birdie the tough par-5 closing hole at Ravenwood to force a playoff. With the Van Niekerk watching, Miller stuck his approach shot six feet from the hole. Miller’s birdie putt fell just short, giving Van Niekerk his first IJGT Title.

"I have known Alec {Miller} for awhile, and I really wanted him to make that putt," said Van Niekerk. "It feels really great to finally put a win under my belt, and I am really excited for the future."

Van Niekerk’s final-round score of 4-under-par 68 earned him Clazic Belts Low Final Round honors.

Finishing second was Miller carding a weekend 3-over-par 147. Rounding out the top three in the Boys 15-19 Division was Ezekiel Zhao of Annapolis, Md., with a total score of 151.

In the Boys 14 Under Division, Mike May of Auburn, N.Y., had a four-stroke lead heading into Sunday, after an impressive first round. Carding a 1-under-par 71 on Saturday, May earned KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro honors.

"I was pretty nervous on Sunday, but I knew I just needed to concentrate on my shots and make putts," said May.

On Sunday, May started his final round off strong with three consecutive birdies carding a 3-under-par 33 on the front nine. With a comfortable lead after the turn, May just needed a consistent back nine to take home the AB Golf Designs Junior Title. May did just that, shooting even-par on the back nine and carding a tournament total 4-under-par 140.

"It feels great to win this weekend, and I played very well both days," said May. "I played well both days, and I cannot complain."

William Thomson of Pittsford, N.Y., finished second carding a weekend 7-over-par 151. Rounding out the top three in Boys 14 Under Division was Marc Holzhauer of Clarence Center, N.Y., with a final score of 152.

Sarah Notaro of Williamsville, N.Y., had a spectacular comeback this weekend. After carding a 16-over-par 88 in the first round, Notaro trailed first-round leader and KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro winner Kristin Bromley of Pittsford, N.Y., by 10 strokes.

Putting Saturday's round behind her, Notaro started her final round off strong with a 3-over-par 39 on the front nine. Even after her solid front nine, Notaro still trailed Bromley by four strokes after the turn. Notaro started her back nine off with four consecutive pars, and cut into Bromley's lead. Notaro made par on No. 18, which was just enough to earn herself her first IJGT title after carding a tournament total of 166.

Notaro's fantastic final round earned her Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award honors.

"It feels incredible to win my first IJGT Title," said Notaro. "I have been working on my putting and it definitely paid off this weekend."

Finishing just behind Notaro, was Bromley and Molly Balbierz of Hamburg, N.Y., both finishing with a tournament score of 167.

RENO, Nev. - Located 4,505 feet above sea level, ArrowCreek Country Club provided a scenic setting for the first round of the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) Reno Junior. With many demanding tee shots, the Legend Course, proved very difficult for many of the golfers competing in the Event.

The first round was highlighted by Harrison Holetz of nearby Incline Village, Nev., with his opening round 1-over-par 73. Holetz holds the clubhouse lead going into Sunday and earned the KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro Award after his impressive showing on Saturday.

Three Easy Steps to Getting Recruited

Step 1: Commitment - The recruiting process isn’t something you just breeze through. If you are seriously interested in finding a scholarship opportunity to play college golf, you have to commit yourself to this goal. Athletes are working towards goals all the time, and there are hundreds of other high school athletes, just like you, who are out there trying to get recruited to the next level. That means you have to fully dedicate yourself to reaching this goal by getting organized, staying on top of communication with coaches, studying for the SAT/ACT and much more. If you are willing to pledge yourself to the recruiting process, you will be able to reach your ultimate goal and a place that fits you!

Step 2: Attitude - If you are going to get the attention of college coaches, you need to have the right attitude. Firstly, you must be proactive. No one else is going to get you recruited and if coaches aren’t recruiting you, then you need to take control! Take control of your recruiting and be responsible for accepting how the process works.

You can get help and support from services through our Director of College Placement, Ann Maness, but remember all the components that go into being recruited. You need to be mature and professional throughout the entire process. There’s a chance that not every coach you contact will be interested in you, actually…there’s a BIG chance. Guess what…that’s OK! It's always important to be respectful and mature about their decision, and then move on to the next one. It will not do you any good to get upset at the coach and say things that might get you in trouble. Adopting a positive attitude will help you and your family through the process, and it will become a project, rather than a chore.

Step 3: Be Open - When it comes to the recruiting process, quantity is key. The more schools you consider, the more coaches you contact, and the more effort you put into it will all help generate better results. In order to have success in getting recruited, you need to leave your options open. If you are too specific in your school preference (example: only DI schools when you are not that caliber of a player) you will have fewer options that will be successful for you. While it is a great idea to know what you want in your school, you also have to make sure that you are not limiting yourself on possible opportunities. For example, if you know you want to major in accounting, you should definitely research each school’s accounting programs in order to make sure it would be a good fit with you and your academic goals. But the key is to make sure you explore schools in all division levels, as well as in several regions of the country. You never know what school may turn out to be a perfect fit if you don’t expand your horizons to see what's out there!

Director of College Placement, Ann Maness, has years of experience with the college athletics recruiting process. Ann is the second sibling in her family to join the elite college golf ranks and played for Coastal Carolina University, where she took no time to capture her first collegiate victory.

During her freshman year, Ann came from 6 shots behind in the final round of the Big South Conference Championship, firing a 68 to claim the individual conference title. To date, that 68 remains the single-round record for the Women’s Golf Big South Championship. Ann went on to capture two more singles titles at CCU.

She also participated in the 2009 NCAA Regionals, was a 4-Time Big South All-Conference Team Member, and was an 8-Time Big South Player of the Week.

Pace of Play - IJGT Educational Series

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Held April 11-14, 2013, the Masters was one of the most talked about in history for several different reasons: Adam Scott took home the Green Jacket to Australia for the first time in history; Tiger Woods was nearly disqualified after an improper drop in the second round; and Tianlang Guan made the cut as the youngest player to ever qualify for the Masters.

That is not where the Guan conversation ends.

During the second round, Guan and his playing partners were told that they were out of position on the 10^th tee and Guan received his first personal warning on No. 13. The official reportedly told Guan four times that he was playing slowly before the penalty was assessed after Guan exceeded the 40-second time limit hitting his second shot on No. 17.

The 14-year-old, China native was given a one stroke penalty on the 17^th green during the second round for slow play. Instead of carding a 2-over-par 74, Guan suddenly was 4-over- par for the tournament and sitting right on the cut line. As the rest of the field finished their round, the world watched waiting to see Guan’s fate.

Social media lit up with fans, players, analysts and avid sports fans weighing in on the situation. Many argued that Guan was being targeted as a player that many young people were watching. Others believed that it was right for him to receive a penalty after continued warnings.

Slow play is nothing new to the PGA TOUR. Plagued with a history of slow play, the PGA TOUR has often been criticized for being loose on the pace of play issue that is overwhelming the golf industry. Was the Masters the right this time to lay down the law? It is believed that this is the first slow-play penalty ever issued during the Masters. The last slow-play penalty handed down on the PGA TOUR was against Glenn Day in the third round of the 1995 Honda Classic.

Regardless of whether or not Guan should have been given the penalty, most agree that something needs to be done about slow play. The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) has a pace of play policy for tournaments to help junior golfers prepare for the fast play required in college tournaments, and, apparently, the Masters.

How can we speed up play?

All scorecards handed out at IJGT Events include the pace of play hole-by-hole times on the cards. Juniors can easily monitor their own pace by looking at their time or also by looking for the group in front of them. Many golfers believe that they are in position if they cannot see the group behind them. Your position on the golf course has nothing to do with the group behind you, but only the group ahead.

Be sure to start checking yardage books and using range finders while other players are hitting. Be respectful, but be ready to hit by the time it is your turn. Playing ‘ready golf’ cuts out a lot of unnecessary time on the course.

Place your bag nearer to the next tee box when you are on the green. As seen in Guan’s situation, every second counts. Placing your bag between the green and the next tee box will help get you to the next hole faster and out of the way of the group behind you.

The IJGT has implemented the walk ahead policy to assist with pace of play. When playing in a group of three, the first player to hole out should gather their things and walk to the next hole and get ready to tee off. The second player to hole out will grab the flagstick while the third finishes the hole. As simple as it may seem, this method is extremely effective and can cut off over 25 minutes on a round.

Guan played exceptionally at the Masters. Even with the pace of play stroke penalty he was able to make the cut and play all four rounds at Augusta. Though the situation was one for the history books, it is one that junior golfers around the world will remember as they continue to hear more about pace of play in the future.

Northeast Tour

The International Junior Golf Tour traveled to beautiful Architects Golf Club last weekend for the Architects Cup. Jack Panagos of Hillsborough, N.J., took home the title in the Boys 15-19 Division, and was also selected as this week's Photo of the Week with his strong following on Facebook. Panagos had two spectacular rounds last weekend including a second round 2-under-par 69. This was Panagos's first IJGT Title, and we look forward to seeing him out on the course in the future!

Southeast Tour

This week's Photo of the Week in in the Southeast region goes to Paul Schumacher of Canton, Ohio. Schumacher had a solid tournament at the Auntie Anne's Pretzels Junior at Shipyard, finishing second in the Boys 14 Under Division. In the picture he can be seen holding his second place trophy. This is Schumacher's third top-three finish this season, and we expect even more in the future.

Northeast Tour

LOPATCONG, N.J. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) hosted their seventh tournament of the Northeast tour April 27-28 at The Architects Cup. Architects Golf Club hosted a great event this past weekend as the weather was gorgeous with sunny skies and temperatures in the high 60’s both days. The beautiful weather and the nice condition of the golf course provided these golfers an opportunity to shoot some very low scores. With that being said, two players stood out and came ready to play at this multi-architect designed golf course. This week’s Highlighted Players of the Week winners are Sam Goldenring of Florham Park, N.J., and Camilla Vik of Greenwich, Conn.

Goldenring competed in his third IJGT event this past weekend in the Boys 14 Under Division. He played in the Major Championship at Architects Golf Club last October where he earned a T7 finish. Goldenring shared the low round of the day Saturday in his division with a very impressive 1-over-par 72. He went into Sunday’s round feeling confident and positive. Goldenring fired another 1-over-par 72 during the final round earning him a second place finish behind Nate Menon of Wyomissing, Pa. The Florham Park junior carded a 72-72—144 to earn him this week’s Highlighted Player of the Week honors. Congratulations Sam Goldenring on a great performance at The Architects Cup, and we hope to see you in future IJGT events.

Vik was no stranger to Architects Golf Club as she competed in the Major Championship at Architects Golf Club in October 2012 where she earned a third-place finish. In Saturday’s round, she carded a 9-over-par 80 which put her six strokes behind leader Brynn Walker of St. Davids, Pa. Vik knew she had to fire a low score on Sunday’s round to have a chance of winning the tournament. She started off Sunday’s round 2-under-par through her first three holes, feeling very confident in her golf game. Vik carded the low round of the day for the Girls Division on Sunday with a 74, earning her a second-place finish. We would like to congratulate Camilla Vik on an outstanding tournament and look forward to seeing her in future tournaments on the Northeast tour.

Southeast Tour

HLTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) hosted the Auntie Anne’s Pretzels Junior this past weekend at Shipyard Golf Club. Competitors were challenged by the tight fairways lined with large oaks and tall pines. With beautiful weather, juniors’ golf games were put to the test on the demanding Clipper and Galleon courses. Two players who stood out for their impressive finishes were Owen Miller of Burgettstown, Pa., and Laura Gonzalez of Bogota, Colombia.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Miller came into the Auntie Anne’s Pretzels Junior confident after a top-five finish the week before at The Western PA. Major at Nemacolin. He played very consistently during the first round making 14 pars and his round was highlighted by a birdie on the last hole. Carding a first-round 76, Miller sat four strokes off the lead in a tie for eighth place. During his final round, Miller made a birdie on the difficult 10^th hole and shot a back-nine even-par 36. Carding a final-round 75, Miller moved into a tie for fifth place. His top-five finish at Shipyard was his third of the season and his two rounds of 76 and 75 were his two lowest of the season. The IJGT looks forward to seeing Miller at his next event, The Chocolate Challenge at Hershey.

In the Girls Division, Gonzalez shot a first round 82 and was in a tie for tenth place going into the final round. On Sunday, she carded a 76 that was highlighted by a birdie on the fifth hole. Her impressive final round was her lowest round of the Spring Season and earned her a fifth-place finish for the tournament. Gonzalez’s top-five finish at Shipyard is her best of Spring Season. The IJGT staff is excited to see her continued improvement in the upcoming weeks at the AHEAD Open at Bear Creek and The Orlando Junior at Falcon’s Fire.

IJGT Returns to Hershey CC for Major Championship

LOPATCONG, N.J .- The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) is set to return to Hershey, Pa., for the Major Championship at Hershey Country Club presented by the Hank Haney IJGA May 11-12. This two-day, 36-hole event will be the final Major Championship of the season, and will take place on the PGA TOUR tested East Course at Hershey Country Club. This highly anticipated event will showcase some of the top junior golfers from around the world all competing for national recognition and double IJGT Merit Points.

Opened in 1969, the par-71 East Course at Hershey Country Club is a golf enthusiast's dream, featuring elevated greens, three sparkling lakes, and more than 100 bunkers. Designer George Fazio captured the natural beauty of central Pennsylvania’s countryside with views that golfers can appreciate on every hole. The course boasts numerous natural hazards, rolling fairways, and daunting greens, stretching 7,061 yards with a course rating of 74.5 and a slope rating of 136. The East Course has hosted several PGA tournaments, most recently the Nationwide Tour’s Reese's Cup Classic, an event on professional golf's development tour.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Roland Massimino of Lumberville, Pa., is coming of a second-place finish at the Architects Cup last weekend, and looks to capture his second IJGT Title of the season. Eamon Marone of Belvidere, N.J., is seeking his first IJGT Title of his career after an impressive third-place finish last weekend. Marone has three top-three finishes this season, and looks to make breakthrough in a major way at Hershey Country Club.

Nate Menon of Wyomissing, Pa., will attempt to add to his impressive winning streak in the Boys 14 Under Division. Menon is coming off back-to-back first-place finishes after a very impressive finish at the Architects Cup carding a 5-under-par 137. Gus Minkin of York, Pa., is no stranger to success this season. Minkin finished first at the College Classic at Penn State University and has seven top-three finishes, which will make him a player to keep an eye on in the Boys 14 Under Division.

In the Girls Division, Katie Edelblut of New Hope, Pa., returns to the IJGT after two first-place finishes at the Colonial Open at Golden Horseshoe and the Bridgestone Series at Westfields. Sarah Kokotajlo of Ewing, N.J., is looking for her first IJGT Title after three top-five finishes this season. The Girls Division is filled with tons of talent, and will be an exciting division to watch.

Hershey Country Club will be open to optional practice rounds and IJGT registration, Friday, May 10 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Event will begin May 10 with tee times beginning at 8:00 a.m., and will end with an awards ceremony recognizing the top-three finishers in each division with trophies and tournament gifts immediately following the round Sunday, May 11.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Thomas Avant of Chandler, Ariz., returns to Troon North after an impressive performance there last December. He carded rounds of 76-75 during the PURE Grips Junior Open to finish tied for sixth place. Avant also had a great final-round performance at the Arizona Open at Wigwam Golf Resort, where he carded a 1-over-par 73. Avant will definitely be a player to watch as he attempts to take home his first IJGT title in his home state.

Troon North – Monument Course will be open for optional practice rounds and registration May 10 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The PURE Grips Shootout will begin with opening round tee times May 11 at 7 a.m. and will end with an awards ceremony recognizing the top-3 juniors in each division with tournament gifts and trophies.
