The University of Delhi or DU is a central university situated in Delhi, India and is funded by Government of India. It was established in the year 1922 and it offers courses at the undergraduate and post-graduate level. The university has two campuses, namely north campus and south campus in the northern and southern part of the city respectively. The University at present has 65 colleges that have liberal courses in humanities, commerce, social sciences and science courses. Twenty five of these colleges are affiliated to the South Campus while the others are to the North Campus. All these colleges except two, Lady Irwin College and Institute of Home Economics, are undergraduate colleges.

The total number of colleges under the University goes up to 77 if you include the colleges that run the professional courses. Some Colleges also offer evening courses. Admissions based on excellence in extracurricular activities and sports is carried out after conducting trials by the colleges. Students need to apply separately to each college for being considered for admission under these categories.

The university reserves seats for students who are physically handicapped or belong to the Scheduled castes or scheduled tribes as per government policy. Students who seek admission under these categories need to register centrally in the University of Delhi. The university allocates the course and college to these students based on their choice and availability.

Ranking :The University of Delhi was ranked #398 in the QS World University Rankings of 2011.

In the QS Asian University Rankings it was ranked #77.

In rankings of Indian universities, it was ranked first by the India Today India's Top 45 Universities of 2011. The survey was conducted in conjuncture with the market research firm AC Nielsen.

The academic session of the University starts on 21st July every year while admissions for the regular courses are held in June-July. Admission in courses that are done through entrance examination follow a different schedule.

Admission to all the undergraduate courses (except the professional ones) is carried out by each college though a centralized common form and the cut lists are announced by the colleges, each year in the month of June. But from the year 2011 onwards, the University is doing away with the requirement of preregistration for admission. South Asia's first modern Metro Museum, showcasing the Delhi Metro, has been opened in New Delhi, the only such installation worldwide in an operational Metro station.
The Metro Museum at Patel Chowk Metro station comes as a New Year gift to the citizens of Delhi and showcases the genesis, history and journey of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). India's first modern public transportation system, the Delhi Metro has revolutionized travel by providing a fast, reliable, safe and comfortable means of transport in the city characterized by rickety vehicles and unreliable operators.
Though founded only in 1995 with commercial operations beginning on 25th December 2002, the DMRC has a rich and varied history because of the nature of the project that is India's largest urban intervention in the transportation sector since Independence. Built in one of the most congested cities in the world, the Delhi Metro used cutting edge technology from around the world including Germany, France, Japan, Korea, etc. to create a system that is one of the most advanced in the world. A loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) funded a major part of the construction work of the Delhi Metro, one of few Metros in the world having an operational profit from the first day.
Metro Museums can be found in only a few European, US and Japanese cities, but the one at Delhi Metro is the only one of its kind in an operational station set up in a short duration of two months.

The museum, a collection of display panels, historical photographs and exhibits, traces the genesis of the Delhi Metro which took 32 years to reach the operational stage from the drawing boards, major milestones, issues regarding the selection of the technology such as rolling stock (trains), rail gauge, etc.

It has displays on the unique management style and work culture of the DMRC that has helped it complete projects before time consistently, the importance of spiritualism which is a guiding principle and the 'Bhagavad Gita' which serves as an inspiration for the Metro employees.

The Museum has an extensive section on the construction of the Metro and the problems encountered during the process, including the story behind the construction of technological marvels such as the Chawri Bazaar Metro station, which is the second deepest Metro station in the world, India's first extra-dosed bridge. A model of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), a "tooth" taken from a TBM, soil samples collected from around the city and helmets of different colours used at construction sites form part of the Museum.

The technological features of the Metro system such as the Automatic Train Control System, Automatic Fare Collection system, round-the-clock activities of various departments, features friendly for the physically challenged, actual Metro rails and Over Head Equipment (OHE) to supply power are described in the Museum. It has an account of the first day of Metro's operation when about 1.2 million people queued up for a ride at six stations, forcing DMRC to issue a public appeal asking commuters to defer joyrides.

The Museum has two touch screen computers that play the DMRC corporate movie and animations describing the way tunnel boring machines and launching girders used in elevated construction work. Mannequins wearing the different uniforms worn by operations and construction staff, along with brief descriptions of these, a model of the Metro train, models of stations, share certificates and close-circuit television camera which visitors can use are included.

Souvenirs such as Metro ties, pens, key-chains and books will be available for sale at the Metro Museum. Curator services at the Museum can be availed from 10 AM to 4 PM on all days except Monday when the Museum would be closed.

The Khuni Darwaza is one of the gates built by Emperor Sher Shah Shuri in his city Shergarh . The three princes of the Mughal dynasty - Bahadur Shah Zafar's sons Mirza Mughal and Kizr Sultan and grandson Abu Bakr, were shot by William Hodson on September 22, 1857 during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The blood kept dripping from the ceiling of the Gate and led to it being called the Khuni Darwaza.

Stimulation Of The Mind: The Purana Quila or the old fort: Purana Qila, founded by the second Mughal Emperor, Humayun in 1533 and completed five years later. Purana Qila and its environs flourished as the sixth city of Delhi. Purana Qila situated on the banks of Yamuna, was constructed by the Mughal emperor Humayun.

The Garden of Five Senses is located at Said-ul-Aizab village , close to the Mehrauli heritage area in New Delhi. The park was developed by Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTDC), Government of Delhi. The garden is built on a large expanse of land, 20 acres to be precise. It was inaugurated in February 2003 by Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit, coinciding with the beginning of the 16th garden festival which is showcasing seasonal flowers, hanging baskets and animal figures sculpted from the plants. The 20-acre garden has numerous attractions, however the prime attractions of the park are the Khas Bagh, a beautiful garden, Food and shopping court, Neel Bagh, Color Gardens, the Courts of Specimen Plants, amazing sculptures and the interesting Solar Energy Park.

Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place, New Delhi

Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place, New Delhi, is an ancient Hindu temple and is claimed to be one of the five temples of Mahabharata days in Delhi. The other four temples are the Kalkaji, a Kali temple in South Delhi containing Swayambu rock Idol, the Yogmaya Temple near Qutub Minar, the Bhairav temple near the Purana Qila and the Nili Chatri

Mahadev (Shiva temple) at Nigambodh Ghat outside the walls of Old Delhi. The idol in the temple, devotionally worshipped as “Sri Hanuman Ji Maharaj” (Great Lord Hanuman), is that of Bala Hanuman namely, Hanuman as a child.

The 800 year old Gauri Shankar Temple is located next to the Digambar Jain Temple on the main Chandni Chowk road amidst the mixed fragrance of numerous flowers displayed for sale in the nearby flower shops. One of the most important temples of Shaivism (a sect of Hinduism that worships Lord Shiva) in the country, it has an 800-year-old brown lingam (phallus stone) encased in a marble representation of a female organ. Surrounded by snakes made of silver, the lingam according to Hinduism represents a 'cosmic pillar, the center of universe, the life itself'.

The auspicious day to visit the temple is on Monday as it is considered the day of Lord Shiva. The temple is beautifully decorated during the festival of Shivaratri when thousands of devotees come to seek blessings from their deity.

Situated in the capital of India, the Chattarpur Mandir is a fine example which presents Delhi a place that has some spectacular Hindu Temples to it's credit. 4-km away from Qutb Minar, stands the flamboyant and rich temples of Chattarpur. Made of shining white marble, these temples are very popular with the city's Hindus and the queues during Durga Puja have to be seen to be believed. The main temple dedicated to goddess Durga is built in South Indian style.

Do you support Anna Hazare Jan Lokpal Bill or Government Bill - Express your opinion otherwise you may regret for your life and next generation will never forgive you. It seems to be the greatest movement against the corruption in Indian history. Its our country that belong to common men not to these politician. Parliament must work to the benefit and welfare of common men not in their own interest.

The war of words between the Congress party and Anna Hazare has only intensified. At a Group of Ministers (GoM) press conference on Sunday, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said, ''There is nothing more undemocratic than what Anna is doing. The Lokpal Bill is the property of the Parliament not that of the government. The question of dialogue between Anna and the government doesn't arise. Team Anna has to speak to the standing committee. If he complies good, otherwise action will have to be taken.''

Parliament represent people of India and must honour the wishes and commands of Indian people. So please send letter / email / call your parliamentary members to do what you want them to do.

The city's history is as old as the epic Mahabharata. The city was known as Indraprastha, where the Pandavas lived. Over time, in eight cities with more came to life near Indraprastha, Lal Kot, Siri, Dinpanah, Quila Rai Pithora, Ferozabad, Jahanpanah, Tughlakabad and Shahjahanabad.

Delhi has witnessed political turmoil for more than five centuries. It was ruled by the Mughals in succession Khiljis and Tughlaq.

In 1192 the legions of the Afghan warrior Muhammad of Ghori captured the Rajput town, and the Delhi Sultanate was established (1206). The invasion of Delhi by Timur in 1398 put an end to the sultanate; the Lodis, last of the Delhi sultans, gave way to Babur, who, after the battle of Panipat in 1526, founded the Mughal Empire. The early Mughal emperors favoured Agra as their capital, and Delhi became their permanent seat only after Shah Jahan built (1638) the walls of Old Delhi.

From Hindu Kings to Muslim Sultans, the reins of the city kept shifting from one ruler to another. The soils of the city smell of blood, sacrifices and love for the nation. The old 'Havelis' and edifices from the past stand silent but their silence also speaks volumes for their owners and people who lived here centuries back.

In the year 1803 AD, the city came under the British rule. In 1911, British shifted their capital from Calcutta to Delhi. It again became the center of all the governing activities. But, the city has the reputation of over throwing the occupants of its throne. It included the British and the current political parties that have had the honour of leading free India.

After independence in 1947, New Delhi was officially declared as the Capital of India.
