Journey To A Lost Age of Mighty Snow Beasts... An Age of Ice.

SAVE THE DATES for FREE Teacher Previews on 17 and 19 March 2013!

Titans of the Ice Age transports viewers to the beautiful and otherworldy frozen landscapes of North America, Europe and Asia ten thousand years before modern civilization. Peer through the 3D canvas to an ancient world of ice, the dawn of our species, a time when man shared the tundra with majestic woolly beasts.

Dazzling computer-generated imagery brings this mysterious era to life - from saber-toothed cats and cave bears to dire wolves and woolly mammoths - giants both feared and hunted by prehistoric humans.

The Ice Age marks a dynamic chapter in the development of the human spirit, a great test of survival, a "trial by ice" that would compel our ancestors to seek understanding and meaning in nature. These inventions and discoveries - art, language, clothing, the taming of fire - born of the Pleistocene, were tools that defined and civilized the human species.

Ironically, our spirit of ingenuity and survival instincts would ultimately provide us with the power and knowledge to alter the very forces of nature that once shaped our existence. And the consequences, from species devastation to global warming, have become the great challenges in the modern era. The Ice Age takes a thoughtful look at the relationships between the Earth, her resources and inhabitants, and our role in a changing world. As the planet now warms by our own hand, jeopardizing thousands of species, how can we tap into the same great human capacity for innovation to solve today's emerging threats?

Flight of the Butterflies 3D

An awe-inspiring tale of extraordinary insect endurance and human perseverance.
Starts 21 March
Film rating: Check the classification closer to release

Flight of the butterflies is the highly anticipated next IMAX film from the makers of the popular Bugs! 3D. It’s a natural history epic. It’s a compelling detective story. It’s a scientific adventure at its best. It took Dr. Fred Urquhart almost 40 years to discover the monarch butterflies’ secret hideaway and prove the most incredible migration on Earth.

Flight of the Butterflies in 3D is an interconnected scientific adventure story that spans not only thousands of miles, but generations. It’s about the remarkable Monarch butterfly migration, the most incredible migration on Earth, and the determined scientist who spent 40 years trying to discover exactly where the butterflies mysteriously disappeared when they flew south for winter.

Dr. Fred Urquhart is the man obsessed with Monarchs. The obsession started in his youth, when he began to wonder where the butterflies spent the winter months. His passion became his profession as he went on to become a zoologist/biologist, teacher and university professor. Along with his wife Norah, he founded the Insect Migration Association, enlisting thousands of volunteers across North America to tag hundreds of thousands of butterflies to track their migration route. This association ultimately helped Dr. Urquhart discover, in 1975, that millions of butterflies migrated to the remote Transvolcanic Belt of central Mexico.

Danaus plexippus or Dana for short, is the Monarch we follow on her perilous journey from Mexico to Canada, along with her daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter. The outstanding fourth, or “Super Generation” of butterflies travels more than 2,000 km south, all the way from the northern United States and southern Canada to Mexico, overwinters and makes one final short trip to the southern United States to lay eggs. Then, the cycle begins again. It is one incredible trip you won’t want to miss.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” follows title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever… Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Why Bond is bigger and better at IMAX

If you’re one of those eager fans who will be the first in line to see the film in IMAX, it’ll be a completely unique experience. This is because the IMAX presentation of SKYFALL will be specially formatted to feature a larger aspect ratio than the conventional release for the entirety of the film.

The filmmakers worked with the IMAX team in the post-production process to increase the aspect ratio of the film and designed the IMAX presentation of SKYFALL to allow audiences to see up to 26% more of the originally captured image.

Expanding a film’s aspect ratio for IMAX is one of the reasons the IMAX experience is so different – why you feel like you’re inside the action, not just watching it. But many of you are still wondering—what exactly does aspect ratio mean?

The technical term for the proportional relationship between an image’s width and its height is called aspect ratio. A film made for CinemaScope 2.40:1 (featured on the right in the image below), the standard in the industry, is cropped and uses only part of the image the movie camera captures.

IMAX broke the mold. Like with SKYFALL, we provide filmmakers with the ability to optimize their film’s aspect ratio for an IMAX screen during production by shooting with the extremely high-resolution IMAX camera (capable of up to IMAX® 1.43:1—up to 40% more of the picture) or in post-production (capable of up to IMAX® 1.90:1—up to 26% more of the picture).

So what does this mean for moviegoers? You get to see much more of the original image, resulting in a full panoramic view that makes you feel like part of the action.
See how much more you’ll see in IMAX in the comparison chart below:

English singer/songwriter Adele is the passionate voice behind the Skyfall theme song and it has been said that "Adele's first post-21 tune may be the best James Bond song since Garbage's The World Is Not Enough. It's closer to Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever, in style. Full of femme-fatale intrigue, it works subtle spy guitar and the Bond-theme motif into its orchestral arrangement" - USA Today

About the film ...

'AVATAR SPECIAL EDITION: AN IMAX 3D EXPERIENCE'

"Bottom Line: A titanic entertainment -- movie magic is back! A dozen years later, James Cameron has proven his point: He is king of the world. As commander-in-chief of an army of visual-effects technicians, creature designers, motion-capture mavens, stunt performers, dancers, actors and music and sound magicians, he brings science-fiction movies into the 21st century with the jaw-dropping wonder that is "Avatar." The Hollywood Reporter.

In the epic action adventure fantasy AVATAR, James Cameron, the director of Titanic, takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination. On the distant moon Pandora, a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption, discovery and unexpected love -- as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization.

The story's protagonist, Jake Sully, is an ex-Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. In order to participate in the Avatar program, which will give him a healthy body, Jake agrees to travel to Pandora, a lush rainforest environment filled with incredible life forms - some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also the home to the Na'vi, a humanoid race that lives at what we consider to be a primate level, but they are actually much more evolved than humans. Ten feet tall and blue skinned, the Na'vi live harmoniously within their unspoiled world. But as humans encroach on Pandora in search of valuable minerals, the Na'vi's very existence is threatened - and their warrior abilities unleashed.

Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Na'vi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars are living, breathing bodies in the real world, controlled by a human driver through a technology that links the driver's mind to the Avatar body. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake can be whole once again. Moreover, he falls in love with a young Na?vi woman, Neytiri, whose beauty is matched by her ferocity in battle.

As Jake slides deeper into becoming one of her clan, he finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth, and the Na'vi - forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.

Conceived 14 years ago and over four years in the making, AVATAR breaks new ground in delivering a fully immersive, emotional story and reinvents the moviegoing experience.

Twentieth Century Fox presents a James Cameron Film, AVATAR, starring Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver. The film is written and directed by James Cameron and produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau.

Christopher Nolan stated, "Having shot almost half the picture with large-format IMAX film cameras, it is very important to me that we show 'The Dark Knight Rises' in the IMAX film format wherever possible."

"Audiences everywhere should be assured that every presentation of the film will be of the highest standard—having benefited from the clarity and depth IMAX cameras offer."

"However, these 102 screens will showcase the original IMAX film photography in its optimum form, and I hope anyone who has an opportunity to experience the film in these theatres will seek it out." - Christopher Nolan

For more detail, here's an article from the giant screen industry journal LF Examiner about why you should see THE DARK KNIGHT RISES at IMAX:

"Director Christopher Nolan shot about one hour of The Dark Knight Rises using IMAX 15-perf, 70mm film cameras, which expose a frame that is about ten times larger than a standard 35mm film frame. The extra large frame captures much more information, permitting classic IMAX theatres to project sharp, clear images onto screens as large as 96 feet tall and 117 feet wide (29x36 metres).

Cinematographer Wally Pfister (left) and director Chris Nolan, shooting for The Dark Knight Rises with the IMAX 15/70 camera.

In addition to being much larger, the 15/70 frame also has a different shape, or aspect ratio, from standard movies. The ratio between the width and height is 4 to 3 or 1.33 to 1, often referred to simply as 1.33. This is also the ratio of standard-definition television.

Wide-screen TV has a ratio of 16:9, or 1.78, very close to the ratio of most current Hollywood films, which is 1.85, known within the industry as “flat.” The widest Hollywood ratio is generally known as “scope,” and is 2.4. On a screen 80 feet wide, the scope image is about 33.3 feet tall.

When images of one ratio are shown on a screen of a different ratio, either some portion of the screen will not be used, or some portion of the image will not be shown. In the old days, wide-screen movies shown on television were either shown “letterboxed,” with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, or “pan and scan,” in which the image filled the height of the screen, but the sides of the image were cut off.

This is the key to what happens when The Dark Knight Rises switches from conventional 35mm footage to 15/70: the letterboxed 35mm “scope” image will expand to fill the full height of the screen. This change will occur only in IMAX theatres, but not all IMAX theatres are created equal.

In the average classic IMAX film theatre with a 60x80-foot (18x24-metre) screen, the image will expand from about 33 feet high to the full 60-foot height of the screen. The effect of this dramatic transformation is the reason that Nolan reportedly insisted that Warner Bros. make at least one hundred 15/70 prints of the film.

In IMAX digital theatres, whose average ratio is 1.75, this transition will be much less noticeable, expanding by about 4.5 feet (1.5 meters) at the top and bottom of the screen."

And just this weekend, a story in The New York Times outlined the advantages of the IMAX experience, comparing standard 35mm film to the giant IMAX 15/70mm film -

The difference in size is vast and the resulting images on screen will give audiences 40% more of the picture when viewed at IMAX, compared to a standard 35mm cinema. It's worth noting that in digital IMAX theatres the screens are more rectangular, so the scenes shot in the larger format will expand by only 21 percent. And standard cinemas will screen the IMAX scenes in a cropped version, like the image at top.

In the NY Times article, The Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan said, "The sharpness and the depth of the image, projected onto those enormous screens, is simply the best quality image that has ever been invented."

TO THE ARCTIC 3D

An extraordinary journey to the top of the world, the documentary adventure “To The Arctic 3D” tells the ultimate tale of survival. Narrated by Oscar® winner Meryl Streep, the film takes audiences on a never-before-experienced journey into the lives of a mother polar bear and her twin seven-month-old cubs as they navigate the changing Arctic wilderness they call home.

We venture across floating ice with a mother polar bear and her two cubs as they struggle to survive; travel with a herd of caribou who journey for miles to their calving ground; plunge into the ethereal underwater world of waltzing walruses; and gaze across hundreds of miles of snow-bound peaks and a vast expanse of the Arctic Ocean, an exquisite spectacle of sapphire white.

To The Arctic tells the story of one mother polar bear’s determination to keep her cubs alive in the face of natural predators and a rapidly changing climate. The polar bear has become the symbol of change in the Arctic and our impact on the planet, but this story is not just about a species’ struggle for survival. Home to people, animals and sea creatures that thrive on this icy world of glaciers, the Arctic Circle is facing dramatic changes that threaten to disrupt this delicate balance of life.

With the power of IMAX film technology, To The Arctic transports us to the ocean and tundra of the far north to witness the majestic richness and complexity of this environment. The stunning beauty of the Arctic is palpable in this 40-minute giant screen film that aims to cultivate a sense of our connectedness, relevance, and impact on this special place—and of the Arctic’s influence on the rest of our planet.

Captivating, adventurous and intimate footage brings moviegoers up close and personal with this family’s struggle to survive in a frigid environment of melting ice, immense glaciers, spectacular waterfalls, and majestic snow-bound peaks.

Running time 45 minutes.

ANTARCTICA

Antarctica takes audiences on an epic adventure to places unknown, seemingly unattainable and beyond imagination, allowing them to vividly experience what life is really like on the planet's largest, driest desert.
This is a totally immersive cinema experience like no other, bringing Antarctica to its viewers in spectacular dimensions on the world's 3rd largest screen.

The icy chasms and towering glacial peaks become the landscape for a breathtaking aerial journey. Join the first humans to swim through crystalline caverns submerged within the Chaos Glacier; or drop through a weakened snow bridge into the jaws of a dark and deadly crevasse.

From the South Pole watch the sun make its daily trip around the world without ever dipping below the horizon.
The sight of emperor penguins perform an enthralling underwater ballet below the ice cap makes for some truly memorable cinematic moments that linger in the mind long after the film has finished.

John Weiley's film "Antarctica"... is a breathtaking and unique experience and a real cinematic treasure.... nothing like "Antarctica" has ever been seen before.
The Los Angeles Times

Antarctica is... jaw droppingly beautiful and staggeringly frightful, this hale and hearty cinematic trip is a bracing experience... to us professional movie goer types the first instinct is to say ILM sure did a good job on the special effects here, so inspiring is this ice world view and so astonishing is the jeopardy of the camera crew.

The Dark Knight Rises is one of the year's hotly anticipated films and we know there are many IMAX fans out there keen to be among the first to experience director Christopher Nolan's work on the world's largest screen possible. "...I think IMAX is the best film format that was ever invented. It’s the gold standard and what any other technology has to match up to, but none have, in my opinion." - Christopher Nolan, in a Q&A with the Director's Guild of America.

Christopher Nolan on set with the IMAX camera

An extract from the Christopher Nolan Q&A with the Director's Guild of America -

Q: What does IMAX give you that you don’t get from anamorphic 35 mm or 65 mm?

A: We shot 5-perf 65 mm for a few scenes in Inception and I liked the results a lot, plus you can use sound with it. But IMAX has three times the negative area of that format. It’s such a leap up in terms of quality that if you’re working on a film that’s such a large-scale production you can embrace the more cumbersome technology, and allow for it and build it into your production process, then what you get in terms of quality when you’re shooting is pretty extraordinary. For The Dark Knight Rises we were on Wall Street with a thousand extras, and you can see everybody’s face in the frame. In some ways, I feel it takes me back almost to the silent film era, when they had those huge cameras. Trying to do things in more of a tableau fashion, it changes the way I direct a film, it changes the way I block the camera movement because of the size of the thing. The resulting image has so much power that you don’t need to cut in the same way, you can frame the shot slightly differently, you wind up with a slightly different feel.

Q: Have you shot all of your big-budget films on IMAX?

A: We didn’t shoot IMAX for Inception because we were trying to portray the reality of dreams rather than their extraordinary nature, so we used a handheld camera and shot it in a more spontaneous way. Whereas the operatic quality of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises felt very well suited to IMAX’s larger canvas. So it’s different depending on what film you want to do. But, in each case, as a filmmaker who’s been given sizable budgets with which to work, I feel a responsibility to the audience to be shooting with the absolute highest quality technology that I can and make the film in a way that I want.

Starting at Newfoundland on the east cost of Canada, boarding the Russian ship Academic Kildish (featured in James Cameron’s film Titanic) Masayo was given an intensive briefing on the experiences to be expected as a passenger of the 7.8 meter submersible that would take her to the bottom of the ocean and to the Titanic shipwreck. A long, dark, two hour journey to the bottom of the Atlantic ocean, and the submersible had reached the Titanic. Then a six hour tour around the actual shipwreck allowed for one memorable experience!

Masayo’s souvenir from her journey to the Titanic, a paper cup that was placed outside of the submersible which, under such pressure shrank in size but remains perfectly preserved.

Masayo attended our Titanic 3D Centenary Event on April 14, below are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding her journey:

Q: How much did you pay for the expediiton?
A: Approximately US$60,000. You will spend most of the money in one day for the dive. If you are prepared to spend that much of money in 13 hours or so, you should challenge!

Q: Was it scary to go down there?
A: Of course, but you have to cope with the fear. The time passes very slowly at the bottom of the ocean. One hour may feel like one day... So your will have fear for a very long time.

Q: How did you mange to be selected on the expedition?
A: You just ask..In may case, I met the Titanic dive organizer duriing the North Pole voyage. I mentioned his name at the time of the inquiry. I also mention that I am a world-class traveller (I visited North Pole and South Pole already).]]>
