Windows 8 – What is Jupiter?

Jupiter is going to be a new user interface (UI) library for Windows, built alongside Windows 8. It will be a thin XAML/UI layer on top of Windows application programming interfaces and frameworks for subsystems like graphics, text and input. The idea is Jupiter will bring support for smoother and more fluid animation, rich typography, and new media capabilities to Windows 8 devices. (Not surprisingly, the more fluid UI capabilities also are on the feature set list for Silverlight 5.)

The high-level goal for Jupiter is to help Microsoft revitalize a world where developers write applications tailored for a specific platform. The days of “killer apps” optimized for Windows driving demand for Windows PCs are waning (if not already long gone). Microsoft’s hope with Jupiter is to provide Microsoft and third-party developers with a new framework, plus the next versions of Microsoft’s various development tools, to build what Microsoft is calling “immersive” applications.

Immersive apps are not meant to be Windows desktop apps. Nor are they necessarily pure Web apps. They are applications that will be built using C#, Visual Basic (and maybe C++). These apps will be developed using the new Windows 8 app model and take advantage of its inherent servicing and packaging technologies and that will be available via the anticipated Windows 8 app store.

This is going to be an interesting year as we learn more about these new changes from Microsoft.

Indian Flag : A History

Indian flag means tiranga has many interesting attributes creating it unique. Indian flag represents India's long freedom struggle. It shows the status of India and Independent republic. India's constituent assembly adopted the design of the National Flag on 22nd July, 1947. The code regulates display and use of the Idian flag. The late Prime Minister Pandit Nehru called it as a symbol of feedom not only for ourselves but for all people.

History of Indian Flag

1904

Indian flag history started from the 20th century to pre-independence period. Irish disciple of Swami Vivekananda made the first national flag in 1904. Her name was sister Nivedita and then after the flag came to be known as sister Nivedita's flag. This flag was designed using colors yellow and red. Yellow color signified symbol of success and red color shows freedom struggle. Bengali word "Bonde Matoram" was written on it. The flag contained figure of 'Vajra', weapon for god 'Indra' and a white lotus in the center. The Vajra signified strength and lotus shows depicts purity.

1906

In 1906, another Indian flag was designed after Sister Nivedita's flag. It was designed using three colors: blue, yellow and red. This flag blue strip had 8 stars of slightly various shapes, red strip had 2 symbols. The first one symbol was the sun and second symbol was the star. The yellow strip color had 'Vande Mataram' written on Devnagiri script.

Again in 1906 only another version of this flag came into existence that contained orange, yellow and green colors. This flag was known as 'Lotus flag' or Calcutta flag'. This flag signified the Indian unity and capacity of freedom struggle.

1907

In 22 August 1907, Shyamji Krishna Varma, Madam Bhikaji Cama and Veer Savarkar had designed a new flag. This flag was called as Madam Bhikaji Cama flag. This flag was similar to flag in 1906 with the exemption colors and the flower closest to hoist. In 1907, the flag was hosted in foreign country Germany first time. Thus this flag was also referred as Berlin Committee flag. This flag was made up of three colors green followed by golden saffron and the red color at the bottom. It had "Vande Mataram" written on it.

1916

In 1916, the new flag was designed by Lokamanya Tilak and Dr. Annie Besant's. Congress session hosted this flag in Calcutta. Colors used for this flag are white, green, blue and red. Each color was used in striped manner. The five red and four green strips represents Singh and Nair, the white strip color signified seven stars of Saptarishi.

1917

In 1917, the new flag was adopted by Bal Ganga Dhar Tilak. Bal Ganga Dhar Tilak was the leader of the Home Rule League. This flag had union jack at top, near hoist. At that time the status of Dominion was being demanded for India. This flag signified seven stars of "Saptashi". This flag contains four blue and five red strips. It had a semi-circular moonand a star on the top fly end. This flag did not become popular in masses.

1921

In 1921, Mahatma Gandhi designed the new flag containing three colors: white, green and red. White color on the top of this flag signified truth. In the middle of this flag green color shows the earth and Indian agriculture. Red color on the bottom of this flag signified spirit and freedom struggle. This flag pattern was based on the flag of Ireland.

1931

In 1931, Pingali Venkayya was designed a new flag. It also has three colors white, green and saffron. Saffron color was at the top of this flag, white in the middle and the green at the bottom. The saffron color signified the strength. The white color shows truth and the green color signified the earth and the Indian agriculture. In the center of this flag there was 'Charkha' in blue color.

1947

In 1947, the flag with three colors was accepted by Indian and the whole country. A National flag of India was adopted by the three colors in 1947. While a result, the flag in 1931 was adopted asIndian flag but 'Charkha' in the center was replaced by 'Wheel' (Chakra). In this way our National flag came into being.

Description of Indian Flag (Tiranga)

In 22nd July 1947, the National flag of India was adopted by Indian constituent assembly. Its use of the flag is regulated by a certain regulations. Pingali Venkayya designed the National flag of India. The flag signified struggle for freedom for every people.

The National flag of India is designed with horizontal strips of three colors (Tiranga) of deep kesari (saffron) at the top, white in the center and dark green on the bottom in equal proportions. The saffron color shows sacrifice, courage and strength, the white color signified truth and purity; the green color shows fertility and faith. On white band at the center, there is Chakra in navy blue to show the Dharma Chakra, the charka of law in the Sarnath lion capital. The charka is known as 'Ashoka Chakra. It has 24 spokes. It shows that there is life in movement and death in stagnation. The center symbol the Chakra (wheel) was a Buddhistsymbol in back to 200th century B.C.

Manufacturing of Indian flag

Indian flag manufacturing is put up by committee. This committee is called as 'Bureau of Indian Standards'. It also lays our rules regarding flag hosting. It specifies the color, cloth, dye, thread count and everything on the flag. The Indian flag (tiranga) can only be made up of 'Khadi'. It is manufactured from two kinds of khadi one for its major part and the second part for the cloth which holds flag to the staff.

Stairway to Heaven?

Yes, this stunning and scary stairway is real. While this stairway in the heavens will not carry you all the way to the clouds, these sensational metal steps can certainly take you to the afterlife quite quickly should you miss a stair while out for a walk.

While these stairs truly are attached to the exterior concrete wall of this towering Swiss skyscraper over ten stories off the ground, they are not actually used by anyone – they are, instead, the work of conceptual artists and architects (and now: spectacular staircase designers) Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann.

Hanging high in the sky from the side of a building without so much as handrail, this staircase is dizzying just from the photos. Of course, no one knows it is ‘only art’ upon an initial sighting – clean, silver, metallic and set to connect two apparent doors, this sleek set of stairs looks like some crazy construction slip-up on when seen at first glance from street level far below.

Aokigahara Forest

Aokigahara is a woodland at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan that makes The Blair Witch Project forest look like Winnie the Pooh's Hundred Acre Wood. It probably has something to do with all the dead bodies scattered around.
What Niagara Falls is to weddings, Aokigahara is to suicide. How many suicides does it takes for a place to get that reputation? A dozen? Fifty?
More than 500 fucking people have taken their own lives in Aokigahara since the 1950s.
The trend has supposedly started after Seicho Matsumoto published his novel Kuroi Kaiju (Black Sea of Trees) where two of his characters commit suicide there. After that-always eager to prove they are bizarrely susceptible to suggestion-hundreds of Japanese people have hanged themselves among the countless trees of the Aokigahara forest, which is reportedly so thick that even in high noon it's not hard to find places completely surrounded by darkness.

Also skulls.

Besides bodies and homemade nooses, the area is littered with signs displaying such uplifting messages like "Life is a precious thing! Please reconsider!" or "Think of your family!"

In the 70s, the problem got national attention and the Japanese government began doing annual sweeps of the forest in search of bodies. In 2002, they found 78. But who knows how many they missed? In all likelihood there probably is a hanged person somewhere in Aokigahara on any given day. You can see some of them here. WARNING, NSFS (Not Safe For Soul).
By the way, if an entire dark forest full of hanged corpses wasn't bad enough, a few years ago some people noticed that a lot of the dead in Aokigahara probably had cash or jewelry on them. Thus began the proud Japanese tradition of Aokigahara Scavenging where people are running around the Death Forest, looking for dead guys to loot.

The Overtoun Bridge

Located near Scotland's charming little village of Milton in the peaceful burgh of Dumbarton, the Overtoun Bridge is a local arch construction where no human beings have ever died in any suspicious circumstances whatsoever over the last few decades.
However, during that span, for reasons we can't begin to possibly understand, hundreds and hundreds of dogs have killed themselves there. It appears that dogs have been plunging off of Overtoun since the early 60s, at a rate of one animal a month... bringing the total number today to around 600 mutts, who for some reason, decided to end it all.

And we're not talking about a series of unfortunate accidents that could have been avoided with a simple guard rail. People who actually witnessed the reported dogs willingly climbing the parapet wall and leaping to their doom with dumbass doggy grins on their faces. Whether they were crying blood remains to be confirmed.
Theories on why is this happening have been all over the place, from particularly aromatic rodents to a simple stream of bizarre coincidences. We call bullshit on both seeing as--to paraphrase Ian Fleming--"Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action and over 600 is clearly the work of an ancient Sumerian demon or some shit."

"Because, for real, that shit is straight up like eight different kinds of crazy. Shit."

To further drive the point home, it has been observed that certain dogs that jumped off the bridge and survived, fucking climbed back up and THREW THEMSELVES TO THEIR DEATHS ALL OVER AGAIN.
Because the great Overtoun demon's hunger will not be appeased with tries. He demands fresh canine blood, and lots of it.

Winchester Mystery House

In San Jose there is this house. It is a gigantic, sprawling 160-room complex designed like a maze, with mile-long hallways, secret passages, dead ends, doors opening to blank walls and staircases leading to the ceiling.

It's the work of Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune. In the late 19th century, deeply saddened over the death of her husband and daughter, she visited a Boston medium who told her she was haunted by the spirits of all the victims of Winchester rifles. She needed to make peace with them by... always be building a house. As in, never stop building a house, or else she will die. What a nice thing to say to someone who has just lost her family. There is no way this could end with Sarah building a real life version of the Addams Family household.

In 1884, Winchester started construction of her new San Jose mansion, which has gone on non-stop for 38 years right until her death. Despite modern contractors taking about that much time to put in the wooden paneling in your kitchen, the Winchester mansion eventually grew so big you could, in all seriousness, get lost in it. And getting lost was the idea, the crazy twists and turns and dead ends were intended to confuse the ghosts. Sarah was kind of a jerk like that.

Oh, bitch...!

But pissing off vengeful spirits was just one of the many architectural choices for the mansion. The entire Winchester Mystery House was decorated with a constant spiderweb motif--which Sarah believed had some spiritual meaning--and everything from the hooks on the walls to candle holders has been arranged around the number 13, supposedly for good luck. Yeah... for someone trying to free herself from ghosts, Winchester did everything but sacrifice a baby goat to Satan to assure her house will be haunted.

The Sedlec Ossuary

Remember when we said Aokigahara was the Niagara falls of suicide? Well, for centuries the abbot in the small Czech town of Sedlec has been the Niagara Falls for dead people, regardless of cause of death. Ever since someone sprinkled soil from the Holy Land on the local cemetery in the 13th century, people from all over Europe started demanding to be buried there and the Sedlec graveyard kept growing until 1870, when the priests decided to finally do something about all those surplus bones lying around. Something insane.

Bam! Chandelier full of bones!

Today, the Sedlec Ossuary is a chapel famous for being decorated with tens of thousands of human bones. This macabre style of interior design was the work of Czech woodcarver Frantisek Rint who, for some reason, was hired to organize the church's extensive skeleton collection. The results were huge mounds of human remains in the four corners of the chapel, a terrifying chandelier built from every bone in the human body, and a massive skull coat of arms adorning the entrance.

We realize this is the Czech Republic and all, but it has been 27 years, surely Poltergeist was released out there already. Like, maybe last year or something? Why are they still playing with human bones as if they were Satan's Lego blocks and making them sit through Mass every single day for almost 140 years now? On the Tempting Fate scale, the only thing worse would be to start using some of the skulls as ceremonial mugs or chamber pots.

At this point, does it really surprise anyone that the church became the inspiration for Dr. Satan's lair in the Rob Zombie movie House of 1000 Corpses?

San Zhi Resort

What do you get when you cross a series of abandoned, rusting, futuristic UFO-shaped buildings with a series of mysterious deaths covered up by the government? How about the ghost town-slash-tourist resort of San Zhi, located just outside Taipei and inside your worst nightmares.
The exclusive San Zhi resort in Taiwan was supposed to be the destination for bored, rich folk who always wondered what it would be like to live inside an over-sized hockey puck. Construction of Pod City started around the 80s but was quickly shut down after a series of mysterious on-site fatal accidents... or it could have been due to Godzilla attacks for all we know. There is actually very little official information on San Zhi. We can't even confirm how many people died there or if they screamed something about eyeless children eating their souls. The whole thing is shrouded in secrecy.

A hotel? No! This is a... a weather balloon!

Currently, most of the information on the complex comes from the locals who--what a surprise--refuse to go near the damn thing. And thus the abandoned 90 pods just stand there, waiting for anyone foolish enough to wander in.

Come on dude, don't be a pussy, this place looks legit.

Wait a second... abandoned resort town in the middle of nowhere, mysterious deaths, lack of any official information... where have we seen this before?

Prypiat

A whole lot of you just got deja vu looking at the above picture. Specifically, those of you who have played Call of Duty 4, as there is an entire level that takes place there. If you thought the idea of a completely silent, abandoned, radioactive city was typical video game apocalyptic fantasy, you were wrong.
Prypiat is in the northern Ukraine and once housed the workers and scientists of the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant. Founded in the 70s, it held as many as 50,000 people. Then in 1986, according to a footnote in the official Soviet records, there was a small malfunction in the Chernobyl reactor, so for safety reasons the city was evacuated.

Since then, Prypiat has been desolated, its buildings decaying, the giant Ferris Wheel just standing there all alone with nobody to ride it. The city actually had an entire amusement park for the families of the Chernobyl employees. Because when you are living next to a nuclear reactor which was outdated even by 1986 Soviet standards, the only thing on your mind is bumper cars.

The city is located in what is known as the Zone of Alienation, the 30-kilometer radius directly affected by the Chernobyl "minor technical difficulty" over 20 years ago. Despite that, Prypiat is now opened to the public because the radiation levels have apparently went down significantly over the years. We guess we have a different view on radiation than the government of Ukraine. They obviously have a scale for it, while we consider any radiation a very bad thing.
Aside from the inherent risk of getting bit by a radioactive snail and becoming the lamest superhero ever, there is another reason why you will never see us among the tourists occasionally visiting Prypiat.

The fucking nursery. We told you this was a place built for families and wouldn't you know it, they have a nursery, which according to certain claims is currently paved with baby shoes and abandoned dolls. So, Prypiat is basically an abandoned radioactive ghost Soviet baby amusement park.

How Much Time Do You Spend On Facebook? This Browser Plug-in Knows All

How many hours did you lose to social media last week? Is online gaming or ESPN dampening your productivity? A new service makes answering this kind of question much easier by tracking your browsing habits the same way sites like Mint.com track your finances.

Voyurl‘s private beta version was a recommendation engine based on friends’ and the general community’s online activity, as collected by a plugin they installed. When you added a friend, you could see what new sites he or she was visiting. You could also see what sites the community visited most often.

Two other companies are making products that share browsing data, but it still isn’t widely accepted. Voyurl founder Adam Leibsohn says the service has a tendency to “freak people out” and was difficult to use effectively. Even so, beta users logged 4 million URLs using the product.

The new version of Voyurl still relies on clickstream data gathered with a similar plugin, but keeps the pages you visit completely private. Instead, it uses the data to make recommendations without asking for active feedback — no stars, no ratings, no thumbs up or down.

A curated list of recommendations is created based on what sites you visit and how you behave on them. Factors like scrolling and mouse hovering are taken into account to decide what you like.

Users who install the Voyurl plugin also get a detailed description of how they use the web, including how much time they spend browsing, the sites they spend the most time on and their browsing patterns. You can also compare your behavior to the average user.

“You’re looking at yourself in a mirror you didn’t know existed,” says Leibsohn, who used rent money to finance the startup while he found accommodation on couchsurfing.org for a year. “You say, oh, I didn’t know I spent that much time on Facebook.”

Voyurl is still in private beta, but Mashable readers can try it out by following this link.

What is Jailbreak????

iOS jailbreaking is the process of removing the limitations imposed by Apple on devices running the iOS operating system. Jailbreaking allows users to gain full access (or root access) to the operating system and unlocking all its features or potential.

Modifying iPhone’s firmware (iOS) to get access to the internals of its operating system and install a variety of third-party applications on your iPhone is called as Jailbreaking. Those third party applications are not otherwise available through official channels (App Store).

Caution

Jailbreaking voids the device’s warranty. Reliability of many of these jailbreak apps, particularly those that act as system extensions, is extremely dubious. They may do things the iPhone may not have been designed to do, and they do it without any official permission from Apple. Users have experienced problems in the process of jailbreaking (which can be corrected by restoring the device through iTunes), so jailbreak your iDevice with caution.

Under the DMCA of 2010, jailbreaking is legal in the United States. Jailbreaking process does not include any modification to the hardware, so it can be quickly and easily reversed simply by restoring the operating system through iTunes.

Jailbreaking is different from SIM unlocking. SIM unlocking is is for mobile phone to enable it accept any SIM card without restriction, thus allowing the use of alternative phone companies.

To software unlock iPhone, one must jailbreak first, giving the user full access of the device to do such a thing. One way to software unlocking is to buy a factory unlocked iPhone. Factory unlocked iPhones come SIM unlocked straight from Apple and don’t require to be jailbroken using third party software.

Tethered and Untethered Jailbreaking

A tethered jailbroken device will require that the device be connected to a computer (MAC or PC) each time when it needs a rebooted. An untethered jailbreak allows the device to be powered off, powered up, and rebooted without having to use the assistance of a Mac or PC.

Why Jailbreak???

After jailbroken, users can download and install 3rd party applications, extensions and themes that are unavailable through the official Apple App Store, via installers such as Cydia and more. A jailbroken iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch running iOS can still use the App Store and iTunes and other normal functions, such as making telephone calls. Jailbreaking is necessary if the user intends to run software not authorized by Apple.

There are some useful and interesting applications available through unofficial channels that will likely never appear on the App Store due to SDK restrictions.

Apple banned an app submitted by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, Mark Fiore, because it “ridiculed public figures”. Apple banned the use of apps that allowed users to donate money to non-profit organization and charities. Apple also banned the controversial WikiLeaks app, stating it “violated their developer guidelines.” Apple banned a pro-Palestinian app after Israel claimed that it incited violence. Apple stated the app violated their developer guideline by “being offensive to large groups of people.” Apple has also been accused of banning apps from developers in order to profit from the idea themeselves. As the list of banned apps continues to grow, some users have found jailbreaking to be a viable alternative to Apple’s censorship of content.

If you wanted to shoot video with your iPhone, you had to jailbreak and download an app called Cycorder from Cydia that would let you shoot and save video, because your iPhone out of box couldn’t do it before. Same with cut/copy/paste functions, MMS, which were only available if you had jailbroken your iPhone.

Apps like Winterboard from Cydia that allow you to customize home screen, change the look of iPhone lock screen, and change the overall theme of iPhone requires jailbroken iPhone. You can make the iPhone look completely different than the way it does when you open the box for the first time if you jailbreak and install few unofficial apps.

Cydia comes with tons of apps like MyWi which lets your iPhone to convert into a WiFi host spot or My3g which can let you use face-time on 3G network instead of WiFi .

A jailbroken iphone can be unlocked to access different carriers. Many mobile phone manufacturers software code their cellular device to work only with a certain operator. Such phones are called carrier locked. The process of unlocking iphone will then allow you to use SIM cards of any operator of your wish. Iphone in the United States come carrier locked to AT&T.

How to Try Linux on your Windows Computer

Are you a Windows user who is curious to try Linux (Ubuntu in particular) because you have heard so many good things about the OS from your geek friends?

There are two ways to use Linux on a Windows computer. You can either install the full Linux OS alongside Windows, or if you are just starting with Linux for the first time, the other easy option is that you run Linux virtually with making any change to your existing Windows setup.

The former option will offer the best performance because all your system resources will be available to Linux but the latter option is absolutely risk-free and therefore recommended for novice users. You’ll be able to test drive Linux but without changing a single file on your Windows computer.

Running Ubuntu Linux with Windows

Let’s look at some of the easiest ways to use Linux on a Windows computer. Linux is available in multiple flavors (your friends may call them Linux distros) but here, let’s focus on the desktop edition of Ubuntu, perhaps the most popular and actively developed Linux distribution.

A: Test-Drive Linux Online as a Web App

Perhaps the easiest way to try Linux on your Windows Desktop is inside your web browser. Go to edubuntu.org, fill that simple form and within a minute, you’ll have the full version of Ubuntu Linux running on your desktop inside a Java applet.

There’s absolutely no need to download or install anything on your computer and a single session can last up to two hours. You get access to all the features that are available in the standard desktop edition of Ubuntu Linux including the ability to download and install new packages from the Linux repository.

B: Run Linux from a USB Stick or a CD

The most popular option to test-drive Linux on Windows is a LiveCD. Though it says “CD,” you can also use a USB Flash Drive as a LiveCD (without having to burn a CD).

To get started, download the latest version of Ubuntu to your desktop. This is an ISO file (also known as a CD image) that is around 650 MB in size. If you don’t have a great Internet connection, you can always borrow the Ubuntu CD from a friend (yes, its perfectly legal) or order a readymade live CD from OSDisc.com.

Once you have Ubuntu ISO image file, grab an empty USB disk and use UNetbootin to quickly turn that USB drive into a bootable Ubuntu disk for Ubuntu without having to burn a CD. Insert the bootable USB flash drive into your Windows computer and reboot. If this doesn’t work, go to the BIOS boot menu and change the boot sequence.

You should see an option at the boot menu that says "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer” – choose that and you are good to go. Once inside Linux, you can install new programs, create files and everything else that you normally do at a computer though your changes won’t be written to the disk.

C: Run Linux in a Virtual Machine

The term virtualization may sound very geeky but in simple English, all it means is that you can another OS over an existing OS. For instance, you can run Windows on a Mac or you may install Linux on a Windows 7 machine using virtualization software.

To get started, download and install the free VMware Player on your Windows desktop. Then download the VMware image for Ubuntu and extract the zip file (I use PeaZip). Now double-click the Ubuntu.vmx file that you just extracted and the Linux virtual machine will load inside the VMWare Player. Simple!

Technically, Linux will be the “guest” operating system while “Windows” will be considered the host OS. And other than VMware, you may also VirtualBox to run Linux inside windows. The VirtualBox installer and the Ubuntu Linux images for VirtualBox for can be downloaded for free from oracle.com.

D: Install Linux like a Windows Software

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could install Linux like a native Windows app – something like Microsoft Office? For instance, if you have Office running on Windows, you can always uninstall the software later without affecting any other Windows programs or system settings.

Meet Wubi - short for Windows-based UBuntu Installer - a tiny utility that will help you install Ubuntu Linux alongside any other Windows application. Run the installer, choose a password for your Linux environment and the software does the rest.

It will download the necessary Linux ISO from the Internet and will install it on your machine. Alternatively, if you have previously download the ISO, you can just place the .iso file in the same folder as Wubi and it will pick it up.

Now the next time you restart / reboot your computer, it will offer you a choice of Linux (Ubuntu) and Windows. This is a real Linux installation and thus the overall performance should be good as well. If you ever want to uninstall Linux, simple boot into Windows, go to the Add-Remove problems and uninstall Wubi.

E: Run Linux inside the Web Browser

If you are just starting to learn Linux and are looking for an easy way to practice the various Linux commands, check out the very-impressive JSLinux project.

This is an emulator that lets you use Linux inside your web browser. You may write shells scripts using Sed and Awk, master regular expressions, play around with popular text editors like Vi and Emacs, look up man pages of various Linux command and much more – all inside your browser.

This isn't every single thing there is to know about Google+. That could probably be a book rather than an article, and the Google+ Project has only just begun. If Google has its way, it will live on for years. Or it could go the Google Wave route. It's just too early to tell.

While we'll no doubt learn plenty more about Google+ as time goes on, here are some quick nuggets to get you a little more acquainted with it.

1. Google+ is currently available on an invitation-only basis.

2. Google does not consider it a Facebook competitor (at least publicly).

3. Google+ is currently available for download as an app in the Android Market.

4. When you download that app, it splits off the "Huddle" feature as a separate app.

5. Users can post status updates, and these appear on the Google Profile under a tab called "Posts". The +1's and Buzz tabs remain separate. I have to wonder if we'll see Buzz and Posts merge eventually.

6. What is available now is "just the beginning" according to Google. These are just the first features or presumably many more to come.

7. Circles is one current feature. It lets you share things with different people (kind of like Facebook Groups) but with a very different user interface. Watch this video.

8. Another feature is Sparks. This looks for videos and articles it thinks you'll like, so "when you're free, there's always something to watch, read, and share." Filter Bubble anyone?

9. Hangouts is another feature. It's basically group video chat. Google describes it as "the unplanned meet-up."

10. Instant uploads is a mobile-specific feature. Photos upload themselves as you take them, and are stored in a private area on the cloud.

11. Huddle is another group-conversation feature for mobile. Essentially, it's group chat.

12. The stream is basically the equivalent of the Facebook news feed.

13. When you share something with Google+ it's added to your stream and the stream of everyone you shared with.

14. The stream shows you what all of your Circles have shared with you.

15. If you mention a user, using the "+" or "@" symbols, the person may receive a notification that you mentioned them.

16. You can see who specific posts were shared with in the stream -- whether they were shared publicly, to extended circles, or a limited group.

Google began rolling out a social network called Google+ that it believes will crack the code on the social market game. If it can convince consumers to become members by giving up a few personal details and a photo to build a profile, the site could make the Mountain View, Calif. search engine a formidable social competitor to Facebook.

Google+ became available to a limited number of users, quickly meeting capacity. Then on Tuesday, Vic Gundotra, senior vice president of Engineering at Google, wrote in a blog post that it would soon become available in the Android Market, on the mobile Web, and in the App Store.

The social site supports streaming feeds and access to select groups of friends. There are five basic pieces: Circles, Sparks, Hangouts, Instant Uploads, and Huddle.

Circles allow members to group contacts into circles of friends to share content and ideas.
Sparks acts like an RSS reader. It delivers a feed of content from across the Internet on any topic requested in more than 40 languages.

Hangouts offers live multi-user video conferencing for up to 10 people. When the status is set to "Live," friends can click "Join This Hangout" to get face time.

Huddle is a group texting feature similar to instant message.

No word yet on features and services for advertisers and marketers, but brands can surely expect to see paid-search ads and behavioral targeting for display ads.

Helping more people extract data stored in other Google sites, the company also launched Tuesday a tool called Google Takeout, which could come in handy when users want to import data into Google+. The technology creates a ZIP file that users can download and import into other programs.

How Internet Addresses Could Look Like in 2012?

Similarly, Apple’s support website is located at www.apple.com/support which is sub-directory of the apple.com domain. Going forward, the new URLs for these domains could simply become http://maps.google and http://support.apple respectively.

The New Internet Addresses – 2012 Edition

ICANN, the organization that oversees Internet domain names, has approved new top-level domain names that could end with .anything. For instance, The New York Times may opt for the .nyt suffix while Google could acquire an address that ends with .google.

While both individuals and organizations can apply for these custom top level domains, this is quite an expensive affair. The application fee itself for these new domains is $185k while you’ll have to pay another $25k to ICANN annually for maintaining the registry.

Applications for the new domain names will start early next year while the domains are expected to live at the end of 2012.

ICANN Approves New Domain Name System

ICANN voted on Monday to allow the creation of new website domain suffixes ending in everything from corporate names to company brands, and entertainment to political causes, as the system gets its biggest overhaul since it began 26 years ago.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) plans to significantly increase the number of domain endings from the current 22 (plus an additional 290 country domain endings). It will begin accepting applications next year, with corporations and cities expected to be among the first takers. The address names will be able to end with almost any word and be in any language. However, the application fee for the domain suffix will be a staggering $185,000.

ICANN voted overwhelmingly in favor of the proposal at a Singapore meeting despite concerns the shift would cause confusion and would favor larger corporations.

“This is the start of a whole new phase for the Internet,” said Peter Dengate Thrush, chairman of ICANN's board of directors. “Unless there is a good reason to restrain it, innovation should be allowed to run free.”
“It's the biggest change I think we have seen on the Internet,” Dengate Thrush told Reuters at the meeting. “We have provided a platform for the next generation of creativity and inspiration.”

The new generic top-level domain (gTLD) program was approved by 13 votes to one with two nonparticipating members. The sole opposition came from a member who felt that more time was needed to hold discussions with government and other parties, ICANN officials said.

The new names could infringe on social and religious sensitivities, for instance if someone wanted to set up a .nazi domain, said Dengate Thrush. And people who have invested in securing lucrative .com domains will find the value of the holdings diluted by the new rules, he added.

Under the changes, businesses will no longer be restricted to gTLDs that include .com, .net, and .org when they apply for website registration. Industry analysts said global leaders such as Apple and Toyota could launch websites with their own domain names, ending in .apple or .toyota.

ICANN’s chief executive Rod Beckstrom said applications for the new web domains will begin being accepted on January 12, 2012 and close 90 days later. “The first possible time at which some of the applications could be approved would be late in 2012,” Beckstrom told Reuters.

ICANN plans to launch a campaign to spread awareness of the domain changes. So far, about 120 parties have already publicly expressed interest in the program, said Beckstrom. “If you scroll through one of those lists... You'll probably see some major brand owners, some major companies in the world, some major brands, cities, regions and other different types of communities.”

ICANN’s vote concludes six years of intense negotiations and is the biggest change to the system since “.com” made its debut in 1984. The expansion had been delayed largely due to concerns that new suffixes could infringe on trademarks and copyrights.

But the new system “will allow corporations to better take control of their brands,” said Theo Hnarakis, chief executive of Melbourne IT, which manages online brands for clients such as Volvo, LEGO and GlaxoSmithKline. “For example, .apple or .ipad would take customers right to those products,” he told the Associated Press (AP)

The increase of available domains should help alleviate some of the overlap of names in the more popular suffixes, especially .com, which has 94 million sites registered. ICANN approved .xxx in March for pornography, but some porn sites have refused to adopt the suffix for fear that it would make it easier for governments to ban them. The suffix also received criticism from conservative groups who argue that it could attract children to adult sites.

Industry watchers say they expect as many as 1,000 new domain names to be added to the suffix list, once all approvals have been met. Some groups have already shown interest for certain suffixes, including .sport, .bank, .hotel, and .eco.

ICANN said it will auction off domains if multiple parties have legitimate claims. However, it expects companies will likely strike deals among themselves to avoid public auction.

“I think we'll see much more of that going on than see auctions generating circuses,” said Dengate Thrush. “But there is that prospect that there will be a couple of identical applicants and applications.”

The steep fee of $185,000 is meant to keep scammers from grabbing valuable domain names, and the applications process is only open for 90 days. ICANN has also set aside $2 million to assist applicants from developing countries. “The board's very enthusiastic about providing support for applicants from developing areas where the evaluation fee or access to technical expertise might be somewhat of a bar,” ICANN senior vice president Kurt Pritz told the Associated Press after the meeting.

The fee is also needed to recoup the costs associated with the new gTLD program and to ensure it is fully funded, ICANN officials said.Only “established corporations, organizations, or institutions in good standing” may apply for a new gTLD, according to ICANN guidelines. ICANN will not consider applications from individuals or sole proprietorships.
“It's a significant undertaking. We're calling it the Olympic bid,” said Adrian Kinderis, chief executive of AusRegistry International, which helps companies to register domains and manages names such as ".au" for Australia.
“But it's worth it for corporations that have suffered from things like trademark infringement, and can now carve out a niche on the internet,” he told the AP.

This is “the future of the Internet,” said Kieren McCarthy, CEO of .Nxt,Inc, a San Francisco-based company which covers Internet policy and governance issues. “I think our kids will think that we were crazy to always talk about .coms.
