According to the friend, “Kim said that ‘if my dad were here he would be happy about our family. He’d be a great grandfather and he would play with his grandchildren. He’d be proud of us all.'”

Kerris Dillon has heard voices her whole life.

Some might think she's crazy — and she says she wishes she were. But Dillon contends the voices she hears and the apparitions she sees are indeed real.

In fact, she's surprised others don't have what she calls her “curse.”

When Dillon, holder of a Ph.D. in psychology, is not teaching at Kirkwood or studying to fill her prerequisites for medical school, Dillon works as a psychic medium.

It began when she was a child with just voices, but now, the 38-year-old said it's more than just hearing — she can see and feel spirits, too.

She began doing readings for friends in college, and she estimates she's done at least 1,500 since then.

“When you go into a reading, you feel like something else takes over,” she said.

When she sits down with a client, she'll hear messages from spirits on the “other side” and relay the words or symbols to “validate” the meaning of the messages to the recipient.

Unlike some psychics, Dillon doesn't predict the future. She merely acts as a “conduit” for spirits trying to send a message.

She said her ability can be advantageous as well as annoying. The voices never go away. No matter where she is or what she's doing, there's likely someone — or something — demanding her attention.

“I try to ignore it,” she said, adding that she's tried to find ways to make it stop but without luck. She at least tries to “stay out of that realm” when going about regular daily activities, but sometimes, they just won't give up.

For example, she said if you've ever heard ringing in your ears, that's sprits trying to get your attention. Sometimes she's so overcome with the noise that her ears hurt, or she becomes physically ill.

“They won't leave me alone until I say something,” she said.

It took her many years to accept her “gift.”

“I ignored it for a long time, for like 15 years,” she said. She thought if she used the ability, she would “somehow become bad.”

When she finally embraced it, Dillon said she felt a “sense of unity of self.”

At first, she offered free readings but eventually needed to start charging. Her rate is determined by the situation, but usually runs somewhere between $50 to $80 per session. It typically lasts a couple hours.

In more sensitive situations, Dillon offers her services free. For example, if a family is suffering with the sudden loss of a loved one. By communicating with their relatives, she helps families, as well as the spirits, move on.

Shannon and David call their daughters into the living room about the sleepover incident where the girls toilet papered someone’s house. Their excuse? Everyone does it! “Dad said he did it.” “Yes, but that doesn’t make it right,” David says. Let’s hope the girls don’t follow this logic and assume cheating is okay. David now chuckles that he used to throw pumpkins at mailboxes, which is not stuff to tell children, Shannon chides. The kids think Shannon’s being harsh, to which she says, “I’m the queen of fun.” The perfect set up for her daughter to say, “For, like, drinking.” OH SNAP. ROASTED FOR ALWAYS BEING TOASTED. BY YOUR OWN KID. She’s not going to address her drinking ~~problem~~ with her offspring. David says they’re to write a letter, apologizing. The elder girl finds this embarrassing. “You don’t understand a 10-year-old life. I don’t like you,” she says, hobbling off on crutches. Ten bucks says ShanShan poured herself a little vodka right after this encounter.

Next, Jim Edmonds is back! After three and a half weeks away! And he’s willing to go to a meal of food with Meghan! Somewhere in public! Wow! Things he’s not willing to do? Look at his wife in the eye after they sit. The menu commands his full attention. Womp, womp. Meghan wants to know what it was like with her gone, fishing for a compliment or sappy response. Silly Meggers. Jim Edmonds doesn’t do nice: “It was quiet.” Talk turns to “delinquent” Hayley, per Jim Edmonds.

Meghan tries to talk about Hayley’s future plans, or lack thereof. As a senior, Hayley should have at least picked out the community college she’ll be attending, Meghan thinks. But she’s done nothing. This, like many other things, does not faze Jim Edmonds, who responds to Meghan while only looking at his burger. “Well, it will wake her up when she tries to do something and can’t,” he says. “She doesn’t have a drive, so don’t waste the time on her. Don’t get your hopes up.” Jim Edmonds, I’m running out of ways to call you an a–hole that are suitable for printing here.

Eddie describes how to get swole to Tamra’s mother, who doesn’t really care. Tamra’s oldest and biggest screw up, Ryan, is headed back to town and needs a job, but Eddie won’t give him one. Then Eddie talks about having sex with Tamra to Tamra’s mother, hammering home his point by actually hammering his two hands together. Eddie, meet common sense and decency. Common sense, meet Eddie. I can’t believe you haven’t met yet! Tamra pivots this awkward conversation to her “spiritual adviser,” which is her term for psychic. He knew things about Tamra, and they’ve all come true. Eddie—and I—are skeptical. What’s one accurate prediction he’s made? “EVERYTHING!” Tamra snaps, including that Ryan would be having a girl and that Tamra used to brush her grandmother’s hair as a child. Wow. That IS everything. Tamra’s going to have a new reading. Oh boy.

She meets Heather for lunch. We hear their booze order, because we must hear these booze orders until our ears bleed. Meghan comes and takes Heather’s “purse chair.” Rude, Meghan. Tamra admits that she’s never actually met the psychic; she’s been speaking to him for one year via phone and FaceTime “a few times every week.” I wonder how much this dude is hitting her credit card for every month? He arrives and the girls think he’s hot. “If he were a good psychic, wouldn’t he have known I wanted him to come in with his shirt off?” muses Heather. Easy, ma’am. He starts the reading by ordering a whiskey, because he doesn’t need to be sober to make up crap. Then he gives the rundown on how he works and lets Heather know “your grandmother is knocking to let me know she’s, like, there. And I’m seeing a weave, like you two were a tight knit type-of-thing.” Man, I am in the wrong profession. I want to be able to say generally accepted universal truths to people and be paid handsomely for it.

Next he reads Meghan, but I don’t know what he said because I was too busy staring at his hand motions, which were more exaggerated than most mimes. Tamra brings up ShanShan’s comment about Tamra being a “sh– stirrer” though Scotty boy thinks ole Lemon ~~Pledge~~ Bowl Beador finds Meghan to be the real threat. Which confirms what Meghan always thought! OMG. Next Vicki. Scott closes his eyes and envisions his next series of lies. “The cancer issue is wishy washy. I just don’t see it. It’s very possible [Brooks] doesn’t have cancer,” Scott says. And with that, these women are off and running down the path of Brooks is a liar. Brooks may be, but you need better sourcing than a psychic named Scott who drinks whiskey at noon.

Scott now hedges his bets. “I’m not a guru; I’m not Ghandi. I don’t see it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there.” So you’re essentially saying nothing, Scotty. Why even open your mouth, guy? Now at this point, I should say that were Scott a real psychic, perhaps he would’ve foreseen the news that hit today: Brooks and Vicki broke up. Alas, no mention of that and the meal and this farce ends. Know what I see in the immediate future? A fight over what this man has just said.

Now Meghan and Tamra are at the gym because Meghan can’t get her “butt to grow and apparently it’s really bad to get butt implants. You have to go to a bad doctor in Brazil or something.” In comes Vicki and Tamra uses her Michael Jackson chin mic to shout to these two women from three feet away. The rest of the housewives arrive and Tamra starts this booty class. Suddenly they’re all running outside, except for ShanShan who “pees in my pants when I run.” Housewives: Please stop telling us about your medical issues.

Shannon exercises about as well as Elaine Benes dances, and Tamra thinks people would buy tickets to watch Shannon poorly exercise. She’s not wrong. Class ends and cake is here for Brooks’ birthday. Also here? Brooks. Someone breaks out some sake and instantly everyone’s got a cup. To recap: These women are drinking booze in a gym immediately after working out. I have little doubt they would see nothing wrong with a little tipple in the back of an AA meeting.

Meghan invites everyone to a NASCAR race in a suite soon. Everyone’s in but Vicki and Brooks. We hear how Brooks is pausing his chemo and moving onto antioxidant blasting. It’s a treatment his new doctor used on himself to get rid of the same “cancer that I did [have].” Did? “That I do have; he did.” Tamra also picks up on this, calling it odd. There’s now a Q&A about Brooks’ various treatments and it mercifully ends when Ryan and Tamra’s granddaughter arrive at the gym.

Tamra talks to Meghan, Heather, and ShanShan about how Brooks shunned Shannon’s offer to link him up with her cancer doctors, citing a lack of paperwork or some nonsense. Now Brooks’ every word and action is being picked apart, all the contradictions called out. Meghan says “the psychic said Brooks doesn’t have cancer.” Dammit, Meghan. That’s not what he said. Parse properly, you dummy. Tamra gives the qualifier that “he’s not right about everything,” Woah, woah, woah, Tam. You LITERALLY said he was right about everything earlier in this episode. Heather tries to clarify that he didn’t say that, though Tamra jumps in and says she texted Scotty, who reiterated not seeing the cancer. Everyone heard the had/have comment, so that’s now discussed, while Tamra offers Brooks’ “sketchy past” into evidence and this trial in absentia continues to roll off the rails.

This bunch of medical degree-less women, drinking sake in a gym in their workout attire, continue to discuss the finer points of cancer treatments until we finally get a reprieve and jump to Brooks and Vicki going out for his birthday dinner. Shannon and David are there. We hear another drink order, though this one actually serves a purpose because Brooks orders a tequila, which Shannon finds peculiar for someone who has cancer. Shannon feels “dirty inside for having devastating information they don’t know about.” Brooks orders another drink and Shannon can’t take it anymore and demands Vicki “go potty” with her.

Once again, we’re in a bathroom with these women where a visibly upset Shannon starts to tell Vicki what transpired at the gym. Vicki doesn’t want to hear the negativity and walks away, saying “f— that.” Vicki returns and outs Meghan to Brooks and a weepy Shannon tries to clarify her intentions. It doesn’t really work and Vicki’s shooting the messenger, according to Brooks. “F— this bulls—. I’m going to spare Brooks from any more negativity, especially because he’s dating me,” Vicki shouts at Shannon while standing before storming out. “That wasn’t good. That wasn’t good at all,” says David in his monotone, maybe-serial killer voice.

‘PSYCHIC’ PERFORMANCE ART: IS THE MEDIUM THE ONLY MESSAGE?

A performer gets on a stage, alone in the spotlight, with no script or cue cards to rely on. And they do it night after night.

From freestyle rappers to stand-up comedians and political orators, there are essential tensions at the heart of this kind of performing art. Yet every show is different — off the cuff, directing the currents of audience reactions, balancing the demands of showmanship and the necessity of telling a story.

This tightrope between the medium and the message is not much seen, successfully at least, in Australian public life, the project of which Don Watson has said is to “remove the meaning from words, to make them as anodyne and dull as possible, and not to generate human interest, but to squash it”.

But if we were to eulogise oratory, it would be a sorry speech indeed.

One who can claim to command the maelstrom, and in his way does, is John Edward. Best known from his television show Crossing Over, he is a folksily avuncular medium who, at 45 years old, is arguably the world’s most famous psychic. From Oprah to South Park, everyone wants a piece of him. The New York native has run a hectic international tour schedule since first appearing on Larry King in 1998 and is touring Australia again in November. He looks good on camera, and, in a phone interview, I put to him that he does well in front of a crowd.

He laughs at that idea. “When I’m doing what I do, I feel like I’m taking control and I’m teaching. If I had to get up there and talk about me, that would make me very self-conscious.”

Plenty has been said about John Edward’s show and the business of spiritualism in general — some lambasting what they see as a morally questionable confidence trick, while enormous swathes of Caodaists, Christians and agnostics incorporate it into their worldview. At heart, it’s a public séance in which Edward purports to describe sounds and images he experiences to the audience as deliberate communications from the deceased, who, he says, are attempting to contact audience members through him.

But while the trappings and practices of psychic performance have been dissected and sifted in search of veracity, the craft, showmanship and — dare I say — artistry of the medium remains uninvestigated. I’m no believer, except in the power of a good show. Could I still enjoy a “psychic performance”?

Edward doesn’t see himself as a performer, saying “sometimes I have to remind people –there’s no glass here, there’s no TV screen, this is not a show…it’s me and a mike.”

But he also acknowledges performative elements in what he does, agreeing that “I know why [the audience is] coming to see me. I have no delusions or illusions about why they’re here. People don’t want to watch Madonna cook”.

He is a practiced speaker, equally capable of conducting a crowd of hundreds or concentrating attention on a single individual with an intense yet hospitable focus. Above all, his shows are subdued — none of the convulsions and speaking in tongues of a Delphic oracle or a Revivalist Church.

Modern spiritualism has its roots in the pseudoscience of Mesmerism and animal magnetism, later refined into hypnotherapy and meditation. Undertones of trance underlie much psychic practice, carried to the beat of rhythmic music or meditation, accompanied by entheogens or fasting. There are echoes of the creative epiphanies artists claim through communing with their unconscious Muse.

Edward doesn’t go in for that kind of thing. “No drugs or alcohol involved,” he laughs, and despite the potentially macabre material of his work, there is a family-friendly tone to it. After several experiences with trance mediumship early in his career, he’s decided “I don’t like the way it feels. I won’t let that happen again”.

Nonetheless, there are elements of hyperfocus in his speech patterns, a kind of cultivated dissociation. He recalls one incident in particular, “being in that river where the information is flowing” while reading for a woman.

“I remember having the thought – ‘Oh. Shit. I don’t know what the hell is happening right now’…And then I remember thinking, ‘If this part of my thinking gets in the way of my reading’…I was afraid I was going to lose that flow.”

If trance, artistic or otherwise, has the serendipitous effect of removing the speaker as a frame, letting the audience see past them to the pure information of their message, what does this mean for a medium who refuses to engage with it?

It could be that Edward’s audience is relying on his interpretation of messages from the other side, which even done in good faith is unverifiable. With no access to the source material, he is essentially the middleman in a game of Chinese whispers, working as an interpreter for two parties invisible to one another.

Over time, to alleviate those issues, Edward has worked to improve his understanding of the signs he experiences. He now works partially phonetically, explaining “if I feel like swallowing the vowel, because of how I want to say it, I can then describe — this is not L like Lucille, it’s L like Helen”. His metalanguage is unrefined but not inexact, allowing him to transfer higher quality information to his audience.

And in some senses, it’s the audience which is the star of his show. When I question his accuracy, he laughs. “I’m 100% positive that I’m going to misinterpret the information that is given to me.” He’s careful to provide the raw information of “what I’m seeing, hearing and feeling” along with a basic translator’s dictionary — “I’m going to tell what in my experience it would mean to me. But I’m very very clear that my ego not get in the way, of having to be right.”

It’s a wise choice. The fraught terrain where ego and information converse is littered with false signposts. Instead, Edward walks the narrow ridge between medium-as-transparent and medium-as-interpreter.

Tertullian wrote that mediumship is an act “in which the demons masquerade as the souls of the dead”. Robert Frost argued that “poetry is what gets lost in translation”. Clairvoyants have been popularly depicted as speaking unwanted truths, from Clytemnestra to Tony Randall.

In any case, it seems the safest bet to let the audience craft their own meaning from your raw materials.

But Edward’s abdication of authorship is not entirely a soft option. From the Socratic dialogues onwards, active audiences have played a part in art. Indeed, at the crux of Edward’s act is a dialectical educational experience.

It’s a point he returns to again and again. “It’s not a production or performance for me. It’s a classroom.” He talks on an epistemology that preferences intuition and unconscious knowledge, with psychic elements forming a demonstrative aspect to a positive-thinking worldview that, in itself, is hardly disagreeable.

The showmanship is just a flourish, an acknowledgement of the demands and practicalities that teachers and stage performers alike contend with.

Psychic performance is easy to paint as malicious, with its carny code of kayfabe and insistence on the inexplicable. But you could argue that Edward’s mediumship, with its elements of theatrical “edutainment” and Christian mysticism, should instead be viewed like a touring mystery play.

His show, then, could be an attempt to elucidate the message of 1 Corinthians: that human and spiritual fellowship, as a system of understanding the world, is untrumpable: outperforming prophecy, outlasting language, and besting any other effort to see the world “through a glass, darkly”. If that’s the case, the success or failure of a psychic act could be judged — for skeptics and believers alike — not on the ability to suspend disbelief in the phenomena of the show; but on the charisma of the medium and the elegance of their message.

A psychic to the stars with a shady past as a scammer — and as a drag queen — swears he’s a changed mystic.

Thomas John, the self-proclaimed Manhattan Medium, was once a well-known Chicago drag queen busted in 2009 for posting bogus apartment ads on Craigslist and stealing security deposits from unsuspecting renters.

The 31-year-old now works as a traveling spiritualist who has written two books and claims to receive messages from the dead. His celebrity clientele includes Jennifer Lopez and Courteney Cox and he has appeared on “Entertainment Tonight,” according to his website.

But John’s metaphysical talents weren’t always so strong.

The Massachusetts-born mystic’s cell phone number appears on a website where dozens of furious posters accuse him of pulling his bait-and-switch scam in several states.

“Same thing happened to me! $600!! I reported it to the police who stated that they already had many reports,” one poster wrote.

But John denied claims he’s a con man.

“I did for a fleeting moment think it was a way to make money, but I never followed through with that,” John said. “There were never more victims. It wasn’t some sort of big elaborate thing.”

John credits his brush with the law for helping him harness an ability to reach out to those in the afterlife.

“I never really had them honed in enough so they would be useful,” John said of his mystic powers. “Once this whole thing in Chicago happened and I moved home and got my life in order, I noticed that my abilities got stronger.”

But Flanagan’s psychic powers have also been called into question.

A number of online reviews claim the medium’s clairvoyance comes from his use of Paypal — which gives him the not-so-miraculous ability to research people’s full names before doing a reading.

Edward is best known for the series "Crossing Over With John Edward" on the Sci-Fi Channel, as well as We TV series, "John Edward Cross Country." His upcoming York appearance will include reading with members of the audience.
I spoke with Edward by phone and asked him to try and explain some of the nuts and bolts of how a medium connects with the spirit world and how he got his start in such an unorthodox career.
Can you describe for us what exactly your abilities are? 'Psychic' is such a vague term.
"Well as a psychic medium, I have the ability to see into a person's life and see where there energies are. The medium part is the ability to connect with people who have passed over, and see their connections to friends here. The first part is talking about the now and the future, and the second part is spirit communication. Talking to dead people, basically."
So you can't see the future, read minds, or things like that?
"No, no, I'm not on 'Early Edition.' I don't get the paper ahead of time. Most of the world of physic energy is very, very subtle and open to interpretation. A lot of the times I'm seeing something that 100 percent accurate and yet I could misinterpret it. That's why I've learned to say everything, Say what you're seeing. Because they might understand it better than you do.
"But all the events that I do are pretty much just like that. I explain the process and interpret it for the people I'm reading. Intermixed in that, I'll explain their questions about energy. It's like 'Crossing Over' the TV show, but live."
When did you first find you had this gift?
"I didn't really discover it, I was told. I was 15. I come from a family, on my mom's side, very into the subject matter. Like, very into it. My dad was a NYC police officer and military guy, very not into the subject matter. My mom and dad separated when I was 13. I was told, 'Don't tell your father about this kind of stuff.' But I was of the opinion that it wasn't real.
"This woman, [a psychic medium] that was pretty famous, agreed to come to the house, and I was like "I'm the offering? Okay nice." I decided I was going to debunk her. I wasn't going to let her do for me what she did for them. And she freaked me the hell out, to be completely honest. She was very accurate. She knew specific details about things I was doing. As skeptical as I can be, I felt like I was violated. I felt like she had walked around my head. It wasn't a cool feeling. The word is absolutely violation. And I wanted to understand how she did that, so nobody could ever do that again.
"And she saw that part of my journey was to go on this path and to teach. And at 15 I read every book I could get my paws on. The more I read about the subject matter, the more I learned. My entire life, I could re-define a lot of moments in a psychic way, and a lot of people can when they learn about this world. [They will think] it's coincidence, or they don't realize it's a subtle the thing that could be a message from [their] dad.
"It's more like I remembered I was physic than I discovered it. That's the best way to define it. And because I didn't believe in it, I wasn't afraid of it. It was more logical for me. Let me look at it in an analytical way."

How did you refine your skills? Is there a kind of mental workout routine, like mind push-ups?

"I've never attacked a person for not believing in the subject matter, but the opposite is not true." - John Edward

"It was, actually. I got very involved in meditation. The study of cards, anything Tarot related. I got very pulled into that. A little bit of astrology and neurology. I think I spend more time as a student studying this than what I was supposed to be working on [in school].
"The more I studied this, the more I began to understand and be able to put words to things. Meditation, prayer, and using psychic tools like cards. I would be able to know things, like a download, like watching a negative develop into a photo. It was really cool to see in a colorful way how it evolves."
So how did you first find work in this field?
"I never thought it would be a career. Never had a desire to work in this career. My background is in health care. I kinda went that route: you have your real job, your 401k, then you get married and a house and 2.5 kids. That's what I knew growing up, and, 'Oh, I can do this thing on the side,' because I felt like I had to. It's something that I felt compelled to do. It got in the way of everything. It overflowed into every aspect of my life and forced me to pay attention to it.
"When I was full on into my hospital career, my worlds collided in a very big way. I was due for a raise and bonus, and I was called into the vice president's office and I was asked about this 'talking to the dead' stuff. It was a very professional moments where my worlds were being collided.
"[It was then I decided] I was going to pursue [a career in being a medium], and I was going to give it three months. I liked the luxury of going, "I don't like your energy, I don't want to read you, I'm not the right person for you." But I wouldn't have that luxury any longer. Even though I didn't plan for this as a career, it became my passion very quickly early on. But it took a good decade until it became my profession. I had always been doing it on the side, so I had been in psychic fairs, house parties. It just became professional in '95."

How do you respond to skeptics who claim you're merely performing cold readings of people?
"They're not really skeptic, they're really cynics. Either they think people are being researched ahead of time, or they're saying it's guess work that [we] paint bulls-eyes around. Basically, what I think they're saying is that people who seek mediums out are stupid. And I don't think they're stupid. When you watch a real medium, information is coming through. The client validated the information. It's not just asking questions.
"I kinda thing they serve a purpose, and they start a dialogue on both ends. I just don't like the personal attacks. I've never attacked a person for not believing in the subject matter, but the opposite is not true. I don't tell people they're stupid for not having a belief system. I was raised Catholic, but having a respect for other people's religions. My mom told me you have to be respectful of that. I've never felt the need to convince or convert people. I don't think that's appropriate."
With your upbringing in a religious background, have you ever had trouble reconciling these abilities with a religious faith? And do you deal with any religious critics?
"It depends on who you talk to nowadays to be really honest. I am still Catholic, but I consider myself a recovering Catholic. When I kinda came into this, it was in college. I took a theology class, but didn't know it was theology because it was called 'Witchcraft.' It was a packed class. The teacher walks in and the teacher said, 'If I were to call this "Theology," I'd be talking to an empty room.' What it did to me was really destroy my Catholic upbringing. I learned all about religions in the way that they don't teach you in [Catholic Sunday school].
"One of the things that I found so fascinating was the metaphysical theory in theology that was interwoven in Christianity. And [early church leaders] took it out. Reincarnation and astrology. They took it out. It depends on who you talk to but I think there's a lot of the stuff in the Bible that is contradictory. But I don't see my work as religious. I see it as more scientific and energy based."
It's interesting that you consider it based in science, since science has never been able to measure things like psychic energy ...
"Well you can. Doctor Gary Schwartz wrote a book called 'The Afterlife Experiments'. We went through double-blind studies where we replicated and extended the data. Whenever someone comes at me from that end, I say go read the research and look at the data.
"Then people will then attack [Dr. Schwartz]. 'Well he's a quack therefore he believes in the Easter Bunny too.' Wait a minute. Here you have a study where they're looking at heart rates, brain rates, controlling the subjects all of that underneath a scientific program. Twenty percent will believe, twenty percent will not believe. Most people will fall somewhere in that sixty percent in the middle.
"I think science and spirituality are going to become kissing cousins in the decades to come in a huge way. They split in a really bad divorce centuries ago. I don't mean like 70 years, I mean like 20-30. There's more and more that's being discovered but it hasn't been making it to the mainstream. I'm a science geek so I read all of this stuff. And I think it will make people less religious and more spiritual."

DOTING grandmother Anne Smith loves playing with her two grandsons but her thoughts are never far  away from their little brother who sadly died at just two days old.

Jack is five and Charlie is four and they’re both full of fun. But as Charlie met his milestones such as learning to crawl, talk and walk, Anne thought of his twin Harry.

She said: “It brings some comfort to see Charlie growing up. We love him as the character he is – he is a real cheeky Charlie. We give blessings we have him, it could have been worse and  we could have lost both. It’s a miracle Charlie survived.  He was a little fighter.

“But for anyone who’s lost  a child, you still think of them every birthday and anniversary. I’m only the grandmother and I feel it – for parents it must be worse. You expect your parents to die, you expect older siblings to die. But you don’t expect children to die. You should  not outlive children.”

Anne, 53, who lives in Glasgow with third husband, Gordon, 47, says: “You never get over the loss of a child –  it’s not something you can  ever accept.”

But her own strong beliefs mean she feels that she will be with her grandson again one day.

Anne works as a psychic medium, touring the country as Angel Anne. Although she says her ability brings her comfort, it can also be  a burden if she has a vision of something she’d rather not see.

She was delighted to become a  grandmother when her son Donald and his then partner Toni had their first child Jack in November 2009. But Anne was initially worried about the baby.

She said: “While Toni was pregnant with Jack, I had a vision of her being upset and holding a very tiny baby.

“I thought at that point there was maybe something wrong with Jack. Then Donald phoned me in the small hours so say  that Jack was born and was a healthy eight-and-a-half pounds. When I went up  to see him the next day, I thought, ‘That’s weird. That’s not the baby I saw’. Jack was  a big bouncy baby and very healthy.”

Anne was confused about what her vision might mean. Then, within a few weeks of Jack being born, she had a sense Toni was pregnant again.

Toni was expecting twins but had complications at 30 weeks and went into hospital. The two boys were eventually born at 34 weeks. Harry weighed 6lb 7oz but Charlie was tiny and was only around 2lb.

Anne said: “Unfortunately Harry’s membranes had ruptured so he was starved of oxygen. At first they thought he was stillborn but then he breathed. They discovered quite a lot of brain damage and didn’t think he would live hours, let alone days. It was very, very difficult.

“The whole flashback of the vision of when Toni was pregnant with Jack came back to me. If they’d been born at 30 weeks, Harry may have survived but Charlie wouldn’t have because he was so small. Sticking on the extra four weeks, Charlie survived and Harry didn’t.

“Toni is like a daughter to me. Watching your children suffer and watching their baby die is one of the hardest things ever.”

Anne says when Harry died two days later, her son Donald had a sense he was being comforted by the spirit world.

She said: “He said that night he knew he wasn’t alone. He felt people sitting beside him and knew Harry was going to a better place and that gave him a bit of comfort.”

Sadly Toni and Donald split up but Anne still spends time with her grandsons and enjoys taking them out on their bikes and  to the park to feed the ducks. She counts her blessings she can spend time with the boys – and admits the loss of Harry and other family bereavements have made her question her faith.

Anne’s own mother lost two children. One of Anne’s sisters died of pneumonia as a baby, the other in a car accident at 13. And Anne’s sister lost one of her twin boys during an operation. She questioned  her faith when Harry died too.

She said: “To go through that when a  family had already gone through so much seemed unfair. You do question your faith in God at that time.

“It’s still sad. Harry would have been five this August and would have been going to school with Charlie. It is always difficult, every birthday every Christmas.

“As a parent or grandparent, I don’t  think you get over it. There are days when you still get emotional.”

After Harry died, Anne says she had a vision, while meditating, where she saw a nurse dressed in a uniform from the First World War.

She said: “I noticed she had something in her hands and I realised she’d placed a baby in my arms and I looked down and it was Harry. I could touch him and smell him. It was the most wonderful experience ever.

“In my shows I tell people it’s wonderful  if you get a message from a medium to know that your loved ones are still with you. For me, that gave me the hope and the proof that life is eternal and I will see my grandson again and my sisters, my nephew and my father. I will see these people again. Even though I’ve seen spirits and communicated with spirits, this was a tangible real experience.”

She says she saw Harry appear over the next six months.

She said: “He crawled the week before Charlie crawled and gave me his first word the week before Charlie said his first word and he walked the week before Charlie walked. I haven’t seen him since then  but I know he’s still around.

“We give blessings that we have Charlie, we could have lost both of them.

“When it’s so close and it touches you so strongly, you do question your faith and I asked, ‘Why am I a spiritualist? Why am I doing this work? Why has another child gone to the spirit world? What’s the lesson we’re learning from this?’

“But feeling Harry  in that meditation, feeling so real, that brought back my faith. I thought, ‘This  isn’t the end’.”

Anne says her ability comes with responsibility.

She added: “Sometimes people say I’ve got a gift but if they saw half the things I  saw they wouldn’t think it was a gift.

“It’s just my make up is slightly different, which allows me to pick up the higher vibration. I’ve seen things about my family for the future that I don’t want to be aware of. I’ve got to carry that burden. It’s not always a happy gift. But it still brings hope. For me it helps me to know I will meet Harry again.”

George Anderson Psychic Reading

Teri Kielow first brought my attention to George Anderson. She told me about the book, 'We Don't Die', the supposed ability of George Anderson, to communicate with the dead.

I borrowed the book in order to show Teri what the trick was. I did not have confidence in anything considered occult. such as fortune tellers, it was all frivolous. I read, then reread the book, the story of the Licata's was very convincing, that at minimum, proved to a rational mind, that something new is going on, some exchange of energy. One white crow, proves that not all crows are black.

Later, I read Gary Schwartz's' great book, 'The After Life Experiments' which documents the study, with double blind controls, and under the auspices of ASU The study included several of the current popular psychics, This was also the first scientific study done at a university setting.

Upon some reflection of history, this is exactly how new discoveries become part of human knowledge and scientific discovery. We remember Galileo, Copernicus, and slowly does society accept the findings of (at that time) 'laughable' pseudo science.

Then we recall that 150 years ago the most advanced discovery of long distance communications (also binary) was the dit-dah of the telegraph. Today we have iphones.

I believe these are the first garbled messages from people who have passed, but their energy is still here.

I still look at psychic's with a suspicious eye,, but I understand the possibilities.

My Not-So-Psychic Experience With ‘Long Island Medium’ Theresa Caputo

After my father died suddenly five years ago, I found myself sitting in the upstairs alcove of a high ranch in Kings Park that was decorated in gaudy crucifixes and adorable cherubs. Across from me sat the medium a friend had sworn by. A medium who had told my husband the day before that she’d been visited by my father and that he wanted to talk to me.

She wasn’t the first psychic medium I’d been to. And most certainly wasn’t the last. She described my father as a veteran (he was), who liked to cook (he did). She gave details about how he died, and described how he’d lived. The message she said he wished to relay to me resonated, quite deeply, but it was what she said to me as we were talking about my budding writing career that turned me into a believer.

“She gets it from me,” the medium told me my father had said. As a joke.

A wiseass even in the afterlife? That was what cemented the unbelievable truth to me that my dead father was right there in the room with me.

And so it was with an open mind that I attended Theresa Caputo Live! The Experience at theNYCB Theatre at Westbury on December 17. The packed house was rife with nervous laughter and quiet murmurs as the audience filed in an hour before she came onto Westbury’s iconic round stage, set with a high table draped in white cloth, holding lit white candles and a white floral bouquet.

Caputo finally walked out in sky-high sparkly Christian Louboutins and a flouncy dress to thunderous applause. She briefed the audience about what to expect, counseling us to please accept anything we could connect to our lives as messages to us from our departed loved ones from “beyond the physical world.” She said she couldn’t stress it enough, and she was true to her word, as she continuously reminded the audience throughout the next two and a half hours to interpret her words as direct messages, especially if she failed to address each of us individually.

“It’s so nice to be home,” the Hicksville mom told the Westbury audience. “Everybody understands my accent!”

The audience laughed in recognition as she enunciated words like “feather’ and “father” as “feath-ah” and “fath-ah.”

Caputo announced that she wasn’t out to prove anything to anybody or to make anyone believe in mediums, echoing a sentiment she’d expressed when I’d interviewed her over the phone a few days earlier. She explained that she was there to validate for us all the feelings that, essentially, there was more to life than life. If we’d thought that maybe we’d seen the shadow of someone who’d died in the halls of our homes, we had. If we could have sworn we heard the voice of our dead mothers, or had been visited in our dreams by loved ones who’d passed, we weren’t crazy.

“It’s real,” she reiterated, over and over, throughout the “experience.”

And then she was ready to get started. A team with microphones and video cameras flanked her every move, anticipating to whom she would speak, and transmitting their faces on screens to the whole audience so that we could all watch the magic up-close. She approached a section in the front of the stage, asking, “Who connects with a brother figure?”

Two people immediately raised their hands. She told them that the fact that she was channeling the souls of their brothers meant that those souls were at peace.

“Do you understand that?” she asked, an oft-repeated refrain throughout the night.

They nodded.

Caputo moved on to a man who said he had lost his wife to Alzheimer’s disease. She told him that she saw the woman jumping up and down, symbolizing that she was free in the afterlife, no longer bedridden.

“She doesn’t have Alzheimer’s anymore, do you understand?”

The man nodded.

Caputo asked a well-dressed woman wearing a pink button-down blouse how she could connect with the color mauve. She told the audience that she was seeing a woman in a mauve-colored suit or jacket. The woman nodded, saying that her mother had been an executive secretary. She was sure, she said, that she must have had a mauve suit at some point. But she wasn’t sure.

It didn’t seem certain that the mother’s fashion sense matched that of her daughter.

Caputo moved on, peppering the audience with questions like, “Why am I connecting with a mother figure over here?” and “How does the number three connect?”

Hands shot up all over the theater and Caputo made busy work climbing the steep aisle ramps in her stiletto heels. Her husband Larry, easy to spot as a frequent co-star on her show Long Island Medium, lurked along the edges of the crowd, moving around.

Caputo made quite a few direct hits, like when she asked a man, “Did you mother work in fashion?” to which he replied, “She was a seamstress.”

“Perfect!” was Caputo’s reply when it seemed she made an exact match. It was her version of “Bingo!”

Clearly emboldened, Caputo continued, making some more specific claims, like, “I have a young woman who is telling me she was shot by her boyfriend or spouse.”

Three audience members stood to claim that soul as their own, which perhaps says more about the issue of rampant gun violence than it does about psychic ability.

Caputo stood on the round stage, looking up into the audience. She walked over to a section she hadn’t been in yet and started talking to a young woman who was sitting beside her mother. The woman had lost her uncle and had come for some closure.

“Why do I feel like he drowned?” she asked, clutching her chest. She relayed that she felt fluid rising in her chest, and that this was the spirit communicating how he’d died.

The niece shook her head no. That wasn’t her uncle.

Caputo insisted, refusing to move, saying that the spirit was instructing her that the person he wanted to connect with was there. She questioned the surrounding people, asking again about a drowning.

Then she announced that she wanted to speak with the mother of a young child who had drowned in a backyard pool during a party.

The audience gasped in both horror and delight. This is what we had come to see.

Yet no one seemed to fit the bill. A woman said that she lost someone who had drowned in river runoff, in about seven feet of water, and she wondered how, as the deceased stood about 6-foot-4. Caputo shook her head. That wasn’t who she was looking for.

She approached the woman with the dead uncle again.

“My uncle had a boat?” she offered.

That wasn’t it.

“He built pools,” the woman said, pointing to her mother. “He built her pool.”

That wasn’t it, either. Finally the mother told Caputo and the audience that when he had died (of pancreatic cancer), his lungs had filled up with fluid.

“Perfect!” Caputo declared.

The doubt that had started to creep into my mind early on in the show now made a full-court press. I wasn’t buying it, any of it.

Caputo threw out more questions to the audience, asking specific questions that, when they weren’t met with nods of agreement, became described as merely symbols of other, more general things.

For example, she asked a grieving mother who had lost her grown son, “Why do I feel like you are holding him when he died?”

When the woman shrugged, Caputo quickly covered by saying that that means he believes that she was always there for him.

“Do you smell him?” Caputo questioned another.

When there was no response, she immediately clarified that this meant that it seemed as if that person was still there, even though he had passed some time ago.

Caputo told a woman who was mourning her mother that she was seeing “red spots all over her body.” But the woman stated that her mother had had ALS. When Caputo said, “I don’t know,” the woman clarified, “Lou Gehrig’s disease.”

Caputo nodded. A debilitating disease all over the body. Perfect, she said.

Caputo told a woman who seemed quite obviously gay that her father approved of her lifestyle, did she understand?

We all understood.

She seemed annoyed when a woman answered the question about a “father-figure” with the fact that he was her uncle.

“It’s your uncle. That’s a father-figure,” Caputo dismissed. “Same thing.”

She approached a mother and son and began to talk with them about the man’s brother. She hit on a few questions, like when she asked if he wore a religious medallion in honor of the brother and the man produced it right there, from under his shirt. Then she asked what the number three meant to him, and he responded that he had a 3-year-old daughter.

“I Googled that!” she wise-cracked to the crowd in self-congratulation, a wink and a nod to allegations that she and her staff research details about audience members in anticipation of her shows, only to produce them later as part of the psychic act.

As the session wound down, Caputo continued in the same vein, joking with the audience, her signature Lawn Guyland-ese carrying over NYCB Theatre. The people seated around us, and up onscreen, dotted their red-rimmed eyes with tissues fished out of pocketbooks, while still others exited the theater before the performance ended. The reviews, it seemed, were mixed.

After the show, Caputo announced that two lucky audience members had been randomly chosen to meet her backstage. I had been lucky enough to have been given meet-and-greet passes as well, so I waited along with perhaps 20 or so other people after the show ended for the chance to meet Caputo in person.

She emerged from backstage, her outfit changed from the dress to a black jumpsuit, the Louboutins mercifully gone. She chatted with small groups as her staff brought them to her, one by one.

When it was our turn to meet her, I introduced myself as a reporter from the Press, and reminded her that we had spoken a few days before.

“I hope you enjoyed the experience,” she told me. “It was a lovely article, I appreciate it very much.”

I took the opportunity to ask if she ever came into contact with spirits who were not at peace and that if the souls she encountered were in Heaven, did she ever speak to those who were in the opposing resting place?

“I don’t channel those souls,” she said, flat-out. “I only channel souls that walk in God’s white light.”

Then she said to me something oddly curious.

“You know, the first two people that just came? The one girl—it was a mother and daughter—and she said the kid that drowned in the backyard at the pool party? She said, ‘That was my son, I just couldn’t even speak.’”

“She says, ‘I want to thank you because he died many years ago at a pool party.’ She left, she’s like, ‘You have no idea. You changed my life.’ It’s amazing,” continued Caputo.

Amazing coincidence indeed that this particular woman had possessed one of the few backstage passes. Perhaps even more so—and pretty convenient, too, I’d say—that Caputo was able to relay this conversation to a reporter who’d witnessed what had seemed to be a pretty big miss earlier.

Was this an incredible coincidence or merely an attempt at damage control?

For me, this unbelievable experience was simply that: not to be believed. In my humble opinion, Caputo is a damn good performer, and she’s got undeniably likeable sass and charisma.

I just don’t think she speaks with the dead. Or she didn’t the night that I saw her.

But my father probably could have told you that.

Long Island Medium Taught Me It Isn't About Being Psychic; It's About Healing by Listening

Last night, as I sat inside a packed 1STBANK Center with a bunch of ladies who looked like my mom, I waited for Theresa Caputo to appear and wondered what exactly I was going to see. How does someone like Caputo, known to the world as the Long Island Medium, channel what she calls "spirit" in an arena full of people who are all crossing their fingers and hoping she would pick (or be picked by) one of our dead relatives?

I've been to see a medium before -- Rebecca Rosen is a local renowned psychic and she connected me to my past relatives -- but that reading was personal. It was just Rosen and I in a room for an hour. When I played that recorded session with Rosen back for my boyfriend, he didn't seem to think she was as "connected" to my passed loved ones as I thought she was, but I didn't care. It felt real to me and helped me move through a tough loss. But as I watched Caputo work a crowd of 6,000 people last night I realized something: it's not so much about whether or not what these people do is "real" or not. It's about helping grieving people heal.

Throughout the night, Caputo combed the crowd as she shouted things like "who over here has a dead brother?," pointing her manicured nails across a sea of heads. She would follow up with "do you understand me?," after revealing more details that could narrow down who's dead brother she was channeling, exactly. She cracked many jokes about the authenticity of her gift -- after sharing a deeply personal note (like the couple whose son passed away and Caputo somehow knew they had named a star after him) she gave us a wink, as if to signal that this stuff was legit.

Though much of what she would yell out seemed vague, there were moments when I found myself crying. This was not a room full of skeptics waiting to prove her wrong, but rather a gathering of hurting people. There was the woman with a daughter that she believed didn't commit suicide, even though that was what police had determined. Caputo was able to "channel" the young girl who had passed over, and assured the mother that yes, she was right. Even if the police did no further investigation, Caputo wanted the mother to know that the daughter was at peace and she had not killed herself. This was startling to hear, but even more startling to watch this mother cry with relief -- it was clear she had been searching for this information since she lost her child.

I am a person who uses a certain amount of astrology, magic and ritual to aid and guide my daily life choices, so Caputo's spirit work doesn't seem that far-fetched to me. But I also know that there is a certain power that lies in conversation and connection -- many of us just want our feelings to be validated, especially in times of trauma and grief.

There were several families that Caputo called on that had lost the relative that, when they were alive, were clearly the glue that kept everyone together. I watched as mothers and fathers and sisters and brothers finally allowed themselves to release the emotional hold of a loss of their loved one, as Caputo revealed the spirit's message to his or her family to move on. She was very good at explaining that -- even with murder victims and others who had died traumatically -- if a spirit came through her, that meant they were at peace. It seemed like that was all some people needed to hear to move on.

Whether or not you believe in psychic mediums or humans that can channel spirits, a person like Caputo does real work helping others deal with profound grief and loss and that in itself is a gift. The biggest lesson I learned in seeing this television psychic walk around a concrete amphitheater for two hours talking about dead people is this: sometimes we just need someone outside of ourselves to tell us everything is going to be okay. And maybe that person is Theresa Caputo, the Long Island Medium.

An estimated 29% of the population have experienced a touch or connection with a deceased loved one, according to Pew Research Center, and touring psychic medium Blair Robertson is on a mission to help increase that number.

"Our loved ones may physically die, but their spirit continues on and they constantly reach out to us to prove that love never dies," says Robertson. "It's just a matter of being tuned into the signs."

The most common signs from loved ones in spirit are seeing them while you are dreaming and picking up a noticeable but unusual scent, such as smelling cigar smoke in a non-smoking home.

These are ways our loved ones show us they are still around, claims Robertson.

Currently touring Southern California, Robertson is enjoying a surge of interest in mediumship demonstrations thanks to the popularity of shows like 'Long Island Medium' starring Theresa Caputo, who consistently ranks amongst the top 100 Pollstar live touring shows.

"I'm thrilled that these shows and mediums are on television and packing in big audiences to events, because it raises awareness. That and they've effectively taken spirit communication out of the closet," he says with a laugh.

Robertson says he enjoys a much lower profile and prefers to work with much smaller and more intimate groups. His audiences range from typically 50-100 attendees, "sometimes smaller and sometimes larger depending on where I am."

The Evening Of Spirit begins with a brief question-and-answer session followed by messages from deceased loved ones. The event lasts two hours.

"I take my subject matter very seriously, but I don't take myself seriously at all. As such, the evening isn't spooky or scary, but it is a rollercoaster of emotions from tears of release to tears of joy. And sometimes downright hilarious," Robertson says. "You never know what will come through."

WHEN you call psychic Tony Stockwell, the only voices coming through from the other side are his young daughter and son in the background, excited to decorate the cakes they’ve all been baking.

And though Tony’s happy to talk – and explain a job and a calling that for most people would seem bizarre – you later realise that you’ve called him a week early, breaking into a rare day off.

Maybe he saw it coming ...

For psychic medium Tony, well-known for TV shows The Three Mediums, The Psychic Detective and Psychic School, he was eight and playing around gun emplacements with his friends when he remembers realising there was something else going on for him.

Tony said: “When I was even younger, around three, mum would put me to bed and another lady’s face would hover over my cot. She looked quite different to my mum, the quality of this lady’s face was very different to mum’s, almost translucent and she’d come to say good night to me.”

Going along to spiritualist meetings as a teenager, Tony waited to be invited to a development group.

He led his first group when he was just 19 and continued to hone his abilities in that role till he was 33 and Living TV approached him about doing a show. Only then did he give up his day job in accounts.

He describes it as gettng the chance to let your passion become your job – if you collected thimbles, or were good at snooker or football.

He still talks about what he does with the sense of someone who has got to live their dream life.

But since those earliest days of the TV opportunity, Tony’s role has evolved into writing books, recording CDs with guided meditations, touring theatres with demonstrations of mediumship and running his own courses for people interested in tuning into their psychic abilities.

His latest venture, spiritual holidays in places like Egypt and Lake Como will take him to Carcassonne in France next year.

He said: “We are going to Carcassonne because there are lots of people we know who are interested in the history of Mary Magdalene. So we can tie that in quite happily and do some energy work whilst we are there and also see what has gone on in that place before.”

There is more emphasis these days on teaching others to learn to tap into their own intuition.

“It’s evolved that way,” he said.

“I do about a 100 demonstrations a year and and I do a lot of teaching internationally. I have three of my own groups starting, with 20 people in each and I see them for a year. I’m teaching groups in Australia and also in the States.

“It all sounds terribly hectic, but actually when you are doing it, it’s calmer. I meditate usually in the morning and get in my space so when I deal with my kids, I’m full on.

“But it’s not arduous and when I’m working, I’m loving it.”

On his website, Tony shares stories and his own experiences along a spiritual path that few others will follow – even the way communications come to him isn’t fixed and he is happy to explore that.

Tony said: “I think the whole thing evolves. With each passing year, passing case and passing day of working, psychically, it gets a little bit stronger.

“You find another way of retrieving information. That’s what I love about it, it never stays the same. From previous tutors back to 1985, I’d be taught in ways that would now seem incredibly old-fashioned to me.

“Things move on constantly, so when I teach, I only ever teach people from my own experience from that which I’ve gleaned myself.

“We’ve been doing some crazy things recently, trying to hear more and feel more, spell names out in our conscious mind, to become the communicator, to become the spirit person.”

On his website, Tony reveals that blank surfaces are now often a source of messages.

He laughed: “That happens even more now, on any plain background – on a T-shirt, a carpet or a plate– anything like that, then information just pours forth. It’s the oddest feeling. But some days I can look for that and nothing is there which I just find almost more interesting than if it was always there.

“It’s fickle, you think it’s going to work that way now – and then it just doesn’t. That’s the oddest thing about the whole thing – but, again, terribly interesting because it is a real phenomenon, though I know some people will think it’s all lunacy.”

Would life have been easier if he’d stayed working with accounts?

“Easier, but not so enjoyable or exhilarating – or life-changing.

“I’ve watched my own life changes, but every day you also have the potential to change someone’s perception and that sounds enormous, but it’s exactly how it is.

“It’s not like you’re trying to recruit people which happens in any other religion.

“lt can shift somebody’s awareness, but you don’t have to recruit in the slightest. You may have to accept and walk away and never see that person again in your life, but you know there has been a shift in that person.

“It’s all about trying to get people to wake up. I gave a lecture yesterday when I said I believe that most people in the world are sleepwalking, although they are awake and eating, working and watching Coronation Street. Most people are walking in the world asleep – at least spiritually.”

So doesn’t he get weary of working in an atmosphere – say at a live demonstration – where people are constantly questioning him and his abilities?

“No, I don’t really buy into it at all.

“There are maybe a couple of people there who have a strange agenda or don’t believe it, but most of the people there are there for a good reason, so that filters out or buffers that negativity.

“And I think if you give in to negativity, you would never do it would you?

“It would be like if you were a singer and people didn’t like your voice and kept turning up.

“But even if there were just two of them out of 1000, you would still sing for the 998 who thought it was smashing.

“You just keep going.”

National Psychic Week: Arizona psychics give tips

Rose-Ellen didn't predict it was National Psychic Day, despite being one herself.

It just doesn't work that way, she said.

She said that while psychics are tuned in to the energies of people around them, their ability to predict the future doesn't get as accurate as dates and times.

"We tell people more, 'You're on this path, and this is where you're going to wind up,' " said Rose-Ellen, a Scottsdale psychic who has been in the business for 20 years. "We tell them that if this is where they want to wind up, they have the ability to redirect and take back their power."

National Psychic Day on Aug. 4 kicked off National Psychic Week, which started in 1965 after a Broadway producer decided he wanted to help promote his psychic friends. It's been celebrated during the first week of August ever since.

There are a variety of psychics, mediums and astrologists throughout Arizona and a couple gave The Republic some tips on what makes a good psychic and how to find one.

It's difficult to say how many psychics there are in Arizona since there is no central agency that grants certifications.

Dave Campbell, psychic medium, astrologer and owner of the Astrology Store in Glendale, said that all people have some psychic ability but, like professional athletics, not all hobbyists have the natural ability to make it to the big leagues.

Psychics don't exactly have a hyper-regulated industry, but there are some protections in place for wary potential customers.

Some Arizona cities require those who give "readings" to predict the future or provide insight about one's life to get "fortune-teller licenses," a name that irks some in the profession, Dave Campbell said.

"They won't change the name, and it's basically a background check so they can screen out felons," he said.

Licensing fees vary by city. A a fortune-teller license costs $300 a year in Mesa, $70 in Phoenix, $100 in Scottsdale and $50 in Glendale, according to the cities.

The license isn't a great way to tell if one is getting a good psychic or not, however.

Rose-Ellen and Campbell both said getting referrals from friends, family or online sources is one way to determine whether a psychic is worth your money.

Campbell said that if someone is charging $5 to $10, to be cautious. Readings can cost $25 for a 15-minute session from some psychics to a few hundred dollars for an hour session with a particularly renowned psychic.

Psychics, mediums and astrologers can get certifications from organizations such as the American Federation of Astrologers, the American Association of Professional Psychics and the Windbridge Institute for Applied Research in Human Potential, a Tucson-based group that provides a certification program for mediums and conducts psychical research.

The certifications don't necessarily mean that a psychic will work for a specific person.

Rose-Ellen, who conducts readings at the Fantasia Crystal Source in downtown Phoenix, said she has turned away potential customers if she does not think she will be able to help them with their problems and referred them to another psychic.

"We're here to help people and if we cannot do that, we try to find someone who they can connect with to have a positive outcome," she said.

Linda Lauren brings mediumship into the mainstream

BY CATHY TOWLE | Linda Lauren’s “Medium Rare: The Memoir of a Fourth Generation Psychic Medium” is another fine addition to the growing list of Spirit Medium literature. Chronicling her life from childhood to the present, Lauren tells the story through the lens of an unfolding awareness of her psychic abilities. “Medium Rare” is entertaining story about how one deals with, and grows into, a gift that just doesn’t go away.

Although I appreciate the men in the field, I am very happy to see a woman who is intent on bringing mediumship into the mainstream. After all, the woman’s suffrage movement was closely associated with the Spiritualist movement in the late 1800s. Some of the finest mediums were female, and it was an early opportunity for women to speak publicly and have their own businesses, and thus, financial freedom.

Writing a book about a situation that’s hard to prove and not accepted in many circles is a daunting task. Lauren does an admiral job of portraying mediumship to an audience of both believers and skeptics, as well as those wanting to learn more about their own unfolding gift. I appreciated her humor and grit when facing down the paranormal. It isn’t easy to stand your ground when confronted with an apparition! All of us in the paranormal field have had those moments when we wish we were somewhere else, but our curiosity keeps us plugging on. Lauren takes us with her into those moments with a laugh and a reassuring tug.

Evidence in the world of mediumship is all in the eye of the beholder. What might seem sentimental and convoluted to some might be concrete and real to another, all based on context. When speaking about others’ evidential experiences, the book is totally on track and believable. When it comes to her own experiences, although funny and acerbic, it lacked the oomph and deep thought that I was expecting from the author. I wanted to see more of the struggle to believe in one’s ability, and the cognitive dissonance that one has to reconcile with in that situation. I think a lot of beginning intuitives need that insight, and for me it was sorely missing.

Don’t get me wrong, I did like this book — but it did touch on one of my pet peeves: self-advertisement. Granted, it is very hard to have the detachment of storytelling without an editor (Lauren’s book is self published). But a chapter about an app for your services…really? A couple of chapters came off sounding more like a business brochure than storyline, which took it out of the memoir genre for a moment. While it is interesting to know how the business evolved, I wanted to hear more about the issues that come up in our work — like handling overload and burnout, keeping boundaries with clients, and how to handle the negative aspects of the work — things that starting mediums really need to know.

Lauren’s quick wit and humor tucks you right into a story that you want to keep reading. No matter where she goes, the spirits come with her, and are there to meet her with great stories. I was especially delighted to read that she had a book signing at the East Village’s Merchant’s House Museum — a wonderfully spirit-filled place that I have had the honor of investigating with the Sturges Paranormal team.

All in all, “Medium Rare” is an engaging tale, which will add to your understanding of the field of mediumship.

Arizona psychic gets her own reality show on Lifetime

Sunny Dawn Johnston could be Arizona's answer to the "Long Island Medium."

Johnston will star in Lifetime channel's new show, "A Seance With …," in which she'll help celebrities make contact with deceased family and friends.

"If they (viewers) want to learn to connect with their loved ones, or the possibility of connecting with their loved ones, this show gives people the possibility of opening up their minds and witnessing healing occur," said Johnston, who has worked as a spiritual medium for 15 years.

The hourlong pilot, featuring "Days of Our Lives" star Lisa Rinna, will air at 7 p.m. Arizona time Saturday, June 14. If the pilot succeeds, Lifetime could pick up the show as a regular series.

"Long Island Medium," which stars Theresa Caputo, debuted on TLC channel in 2011.

Johnston holds workshops around Arizona and teaches people about spirituality at the Sunlight Alliance Healing Center in Glendale. Her books include "The Love Never Ends — Messages From the Other Side," "Invoking the Archangels — A Nine-Step Process to Heal Your Body, Mind and Soul" and "Living Your Purpose."

Johnston says her spiritual journey began at 13 when she awoke one night to see an angel over her bed. Her mother said it was her guardian angel, and Johnston knew she wanted to help others have similar experiences.

But as a teenager growing up in Salt Lake City, Johnston wasn't always sure about her life's purpose.

"It took me 15 years to actually teach this because I was against it, because I didn't want to be weird," she said. "I took me a long time to figure out that was OK. I spent many years of my life trying to fit in and be normal, and one day I realized, 'Sunny, you're different and it's OK.' "

Lifetime audiences will have the opportunity to sit around a candle-lit table with Johnston and make up their own minds about whether mortals can reach into the spirit world and contact angels.

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. — Sitting in a cafe, one of those lazy places by the beach with dogs sprawled on the floor taking naps and sniffing out fallen crumbs, I prepped for my interview with a psychic medium. His publicist said he could discuss political issues. I figured — why not? Five minutes before our scheduled interview, my boss called. Slightly anxious, I figured the psychic would know intuitively why I got tied up. Unless I despise the person, I hardly ever feel right about rushing a boss off the phone.

Twenty minutes later I had Bill Philipps on the horn. I immediately asked if he knew why I couldn’t pick up when he called in twice and got my voicemail. He said he knew there was going to be confusion, but didn’t know what. I apologized profusely and we moved on.

Whenever I’d refer to him as a psychic, he’d correct me, saying he was more of a “psychic medium” than a psychic and could connect with dead people on the other side. “My true gift is as a medium,” he told me. Which explains why one of his more well-known clients is Tanya Brown, sister of Nicole Brown Simpson, who, according to a court of law, was not nearly decapitated by her ex-husband O.J. Simpson. The Backgrounder: Philipps’ progression into the psychic profession came with a painful incident when he was 15. “It was very traumatic,” he says of his mother’s death. “She had a very bad addiction issue with drugs and alcohol. Where she is now in spirit is more helpful. I don’t do any drugs or drink. I am very pure.”

But she didn’t stay away for long, at least not in the spirit sense. “When she passed away she came to me,” he said. “I woke up with her light illuminating the room. It was a silhouette. It was a beautiful. She was in a good space and [told me] that she would be protecting me in my life.”

Phillipps grew up in Mission Viejo, Calif. and was raised in very Christian household. He struggled with it. But flash forward five or six years, he went to music school and graduated. “I would do readings for people,” he said. “When I graduated, I decided to use it as my life journey to help me.”

Whatever you want to say about psychics, he books six months in advance. He also specializes in audience readings. “I’m able to connect those who are living and those who are dead,” he said.

Philipps describes his mind as “a nagging mind” and says his psychic thoughts are continual. He did recently approach a waitress with a message from a deceased loved one. But mostly he tries not to approach strangers, and if he does, he asks permission before he says anything. Otherwise, he says, “I don’t think it’s appropriate.”

At this point we are both startled to discover that he lives in Newport Beach, which is just one town over from Laguna. His publicist hadn’t disclosed his whereabouts. We assumed our interview would be by phone. But two days later we met at a Laguna cafe by the sea, where I peppered him with questions about everything from the future ofThe Daily Caller and Politico to Hillary Clinton, Lindsay Lohan, Oscar Pistorius and the missing Malaysian airliner. He’d never heard of The Daily Caller or Politico, but said if I gave him basics he could tune in.

We met at Orange Inn. It’s a cute, laid back cafe known for their orange muffins. I won’t go into great detail about this part, but this is relevant: Midway through our interview, he held onto his head, shut his eyes for a few moments and began asking me questions. It was like he couldn’t help himself. Oh no, I thought. I’m not here for this and I don’t want to know any weird woo woo stuff. But he knew things he couldn’t possibly have known or looked up anywhere. He had plenty to say, he was lovely, kind and if you ever want a psychic medium, he may be your guy.

Forget the story. He said this was the reason we had to meet. He said he had things he needed to tell me. None of it was scary. Amid a few embarrassing teardrops, he made me smile. It was time to proceed.

Who will run in 2016? “I always feel that Hillary would run for office. I think Marianne Williamson will attempt it, but she won’t win it. I do feel like she [Hillary Clinton] will win. Again, I do feel that way. I definitely see her going further with it than maybe she thought she was going to.”

Hillary Clinton’s health: “I don’t sense any significant or life-altering disease with her right now.”

Potential GOP presidential hopeful Jeb Bush: “I don’t believe he is going to run.”

The missing Malaysia airliner: “It’s one of those things where I think we’re being deceived. I’m not convinced we’re going to find clues or resolve this anytime soon. Some government has information they’re not relaying. Information is being withheld.” Asked if he thought there were any survivors, he replied, “no.”

Oscar Pistorius: “Guilty. Crime of passion. Jealousy. Of course he feels horrible about it. Arguing. Jealousy. I feel like it’s going to be a lesser sentence than he deserves.”

Actress Lindsay Lohan: “I think it’s very humbling what has happened to her the last few years. I think she’ll have more struggle. I think she has the opportunity to help other people. I don’t see her being out of the clear anytime soon. Let’s see where she is in eight or nine months [laughter].”

Actor Charlie Sheen: “I see him going through different women. He has not learned his lesson.”

Justin Bieber: “I feel like he’s getting into a really big pickle. I see him getting into some legal issues where he wouldn’t be able to use his name to get out of it. I see a lot more drama over car issues. I see more of an addiction issue too. More illegal substances than we know about right now.”

Washington, D.C. in general: ”A lot of turmoil obviously that I don’t see getting better. A lot more issues with Obama and Obamacare. I don’t believe that it has a lot of time. It has a lot of issues. It’s not going to be what he intended for it to be. The dynamic of it will change. I don’t have an exact timeline. It’s not going to last. I actually feel with him…he’s under a lot of stress. I feel a lot of deterioriation of his health, his heart racing. I don’t mean he is going to die. I mean, there is going to be some issues with his heart, his blood pressure.”

Is Bill Clinton being faithful to his wife? ”Oh my God. Horrible question to ask. I kind of feel like…goodness…I kind of feel like once a cheater always a cheater. I believe he has gotten his hand caught in the cookie jar more than once. I’m going to say no but it’s part of his DNA. He’s not going to change who he is. I kind of feel like she has made peace with it. She is in her career. She wants to go further with it. Yeah, she’s married, but she’s married to her career.”

The Daily Caller: “I do feel that there is a lot more coverage coming up with you guys. I’m seeing an actual print, something being in print. I’m seeing growth. I’m seeing something with a European connection. I’m seeing expansion overseas.”

Betsy: ”I’m seeing movement. It’s going to be more East. Eastward direction. December, January, coming up. Physical move. I would release any fear that you have. You’re on the right path. Barely scratching the surface. I kind of feel like you’re doing this political thing right now, but that there were two different areas you could have gone into, blending art and politics. I feel like what you’re doing right now is creating, designing.”

BuzzFeed: ”I’m seeing it grow larger. I’m seeing it Facebook integrated. At some point they may blend with them.” (Note to readers: Philipps said this weeks before BuzzFeedannounced it’s WHCD party with Facebook.)

How do you know when you’re guessing, vs. getting some psychic guidance? ”That’s a really good question. There’s a difference between your intuitive and your mind. The difference is knowing which one has a trail behind it and which one is random. I know whatever comes into my head that is not of my own vocabulary, I know that is a connection.”

Are psychic predictions better at dealing with luck (unpredicted bad weather, a car accident, etc.) or characters making idiosyncratic decisions? ”I think it’s both. People have misinformation that a psychic is a fortune teller. We have free will. A psychic can guide you. To possibly bring you through or prepare you for things on your path.”

Will Vox Media‘s Ezra Klein’s new journalism venture succeed? ”I do believe he’s going to be successful. It’ll be a stepping stone in an even bigger direction…a bridge to a new world. I don’t know how long he’ll be there, but it’ll guide him to the next part of his career.”

Edward, who resides on Long Island, declined an interview. However, his representative said that the "Crossing Over" star's two-hour show May 7 at the Paramount in Huntington will include a session in which Edward will answer audience questions about "the world of energy and psychic phenomena and the afterlife."

Russo, who says she discovered an ability to see ghosts at the foot of her bed while growing up as a child in Queens, will "let the energy pull me around the theater" in her appearance Saturday night at The Space in Westbury. She'll interview not only her own "spirit guides" (that is, deceased loved ones), but also those of audience members. The "Happy Medium" tends to offer advice based on what the guides say. "I've told many people about their life's mission and that they are lagging behind and need to get on it," she says.

Wands, whose next date is May 5 at Domenico's in Levittown, says he'll draw energy and psychic cues from his audience. "I get bounced around the audience, and I get pulled to people. It's like being on a bungee cord," he explains in a telephone interview from Port Washington. He plans to speak with as many audience members as possible, "giving people closure" with information gleaned from the spirit world about how a relative died.

Scientists identify oldest crystal on Earth -- 4.4 billion years old

The oldest known material on Earth is a tiny bit of zircon crystal that has remained intact for an incredible 4.4 billion years, a study confirms.

The ancient remnant of the early Earth may change the way we think about how our planet first formed.

The crystal is the size of a small grain of sand, just barely visible to the human eye. It was discovered on a remote sheep farm in western Australia, which happens to sit on one of the most stable parts of our planet.

In the gallery above you'll find an image of the zircon crystal, a timeline that illustrates just how old it is, and a view of the part of Australia where it was found. The landscape photo was taken by Valley in an airplane. He describes the area as "pool-table flat.""The Earth's tectonic processes are constantly destroying rocks," said John Valley, a professor of geoscience at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who discovered and dated the crystal. "This may be the one place where the oldest material has been preserved."

The crystal is so much older than anyone expected that Valley and his team have had to date it twice. They published their first paper about this grain of zircon in 2001. At that time they determined it was 4.4 billion years old by measuring how many of the uranium atoms in the rock had decayed into lead.

Geologists have used this technique, known as the uranium lead system, for decades to date rocks on Earth and from space, but because nobody had ever found anything on Earth that was this old, the initial findings were questioned. Maybe, some said, the lead atoms had moved around in the zircon, making it seem like there was more lead and giving the scientists an inaccurate date.

On Sunday, Valley and his colleagues published a paper in Nature Geoscience that proves the zircon is as old as they say. This time around, they used a new method called atom-probe tomography that let them see individual atoms of lead in the sample and see whether they had moved. They found that the lead atoms do indeed move around over time, but on such a small scale that the movement would not interfere with the overall dating process.

"We have a zircon that is 4.4 billion years old," Valley said.

And now the fun begins, because this small piece of ancient rock has big implications for how and when the Earth's crust started to form.

Like the rest of the solar system, scientists say, Earth formed about 4.567 billion years ago.

One theory suggests that in the frenzy of those early days 4.5 billion to 4.4 billion years ago, Earth was struck by an object the size of Mars. The impact altered Earth's tilt and caused a chunk of the planet to vaporize into space. (Some of that dust later became the moon).

The blow also caused the rest of Earth to be covered in a hot magma ocean. This is called the Hadean period.

Scientists were not sure how long the Hadean period lasted, but this ancient piece of zircon suggests the Earth crust had started to cool and form by 4.4 billion years ago.

"What we can say is that 4.4 billion years ago, the continental crust had started for form," Valley said, "and that the real Hadean period only lasted for a very short time. By 4.4 billion years, it was over."

When my grandmother was in the last few months of her life, in and out of consciousness, we would sit together and watch “Long Island Medium.” I would tell her that if she ever crossed over and could communicate with me, she should tell the psychic that I was her favorite grandchild. She laughed, slapped my arm and told me I was crazy.

Now, two years after her death, I recently found myself sitting in front of a psychic medium waiting to see if that opportunity arose. A quick five minute reading by Jess Coleman, an Omaha psychic medium and owner of Mind Body Spirit of Omaha, turned me from a skeptic to perhaps a slight, possibly, could be, maybe believer. No, she didn’t tell me that I was my grandmother’s favorite, but she did say things that couldn’t be found on the Internet, or read on my social media sites. She told me things about my driving, how my grandmother liked my recent haircut and even our shared love of “Dancing With The Stars.” It was, well, eerie.

But was it true?

Jane Bryne, a 22 year-old student at Creighton University believes it could be. After a few girlfriends suggested they all go see a psychic for fun, Bryne was shocked to hear the psychic say she had just been in a car accident and no one was hurt, something Bryne had only shared with a few close friends.

Although many go for fun, there are those that look to mediums to reassure them and help heal the pain of a lost loved one. Shelly Minette, 33, a cardiac arrhythmia technician from Bellevue, was looking for closure after the painful death of her father.

“The medium told me animals were involved,” she said. “A deer had ran out in front of him on his way to work as he was riding his motorcycle. It knocked him off his bike, and the deer was never found. How would she know that?”

After the reading Minette said she felt, “like a huge dark cloud was off of my heart.”

However, there are those who feel psychics are mainly a form of entertainment and can actually cause more harm than good. Growing up, Jeanette Bellesfield, an identity theft analyst for a telecommunications company in Lehigh Valley, Pa., was in awe of her grandmother’s psychic abilities. However, when her best friend came to visit one summer and told her about the reading her grandmother gave her, she quickly realized that her grandmother wasn’t actually psychic but rather used all the stories and information Bellesfield shared with her over the years to appear accurate.

“It was like finding out there was no Santa.” Bellesfield said.

As for me, tonight I’ll see Rebecca Rosen, a nationally known medium who’s been featured on Dr. Oz, “The Rachel Ray Show” and Dr. Phil, give readings at The Rose for her “Connecting With Spirit” tour. Will she finally tell me that I’m my grandmother’s favorite? Probably not. But there’s no doubt that myself and the audience will be entertained. And in the end, perhaps being entertained is the true message that our deceased loved ones really want us to know.

The Beatles' Feb. 9, 1964, appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" was the group's most formative introduction to the U.S., and the first blast of the youth culture explosion of the 1960s. Fifty years and millions of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" replays later, there are still a few things you might not know about the historic appearance.

So fab, Ed Sullivan was rattled
When Capitol did decide to sign the band, they threw a lot of money into promotional efforts, one of which was having disc jockeys announce the Beatles' whereabouts. This, along with the unexpected success of "I Want to Hold Your Hand," created mass teenage hysteria in New York.

According to Vince Calandra, who was a stage producer for "The Ed Sullivan Show," fear of out-of-control teens worried Sullivan enough that he showed up at the Saturday rehearsal -- something he never did -- to lecture the audience.

"He was saying things to the audience like. 'Kids, you have to be respectful to our other performers, and if you're not, I'm gonna come out into the audience and take everyone's name and address and report you to your mothers and fathers.' Silly stuff like that," Calendra told TODAY.

The (humble) Beatles went the extra mile
"It was the first time I can remember that anyone ever wanted to go into the control room to hear a playback," recalled Calandra, who also stood in during rehearsals for an ailing George Harrison. "Usually the sound people would play the stuff back to the performers when they were on the floor. But the Beatles wanted to hear the playback and make comments to our audio guy. With most acts, they'd put the vocals out front; the Beatles supposedly wanted an equal blend of music and vocals."

TV and vending machines wowed the band
John Lennon might have famously told Rolling Stone magazine in 1971 he was unimpressed with American culture, but Calandra said the group was wowed by some elements of the country, including television (which Ringo Starr continuously watched backstage) and Coca-Cola vending machines (which especially intrigued Lennon). "John came around and bugged me for change," Calandra recalled. "He was like 'Hey mate ...' I could hardly understand him!"

'Sullivan' scored them their big U.S. record contract
The Beatles' breakout U.S. single, "I Want to Hold Your Hand," preceded the "Ed Sullivan" gig, so it's easy to assume the Beatles' contract with the company that released it, Capitol Records, also came first. Not quite. According to promoter and Beatles expert Martin Lawrence, in 1963 Fab Four manager Brian Epstein couldn't persuade Capitol — the U.S. arm of the Beatles' record company — to release any Beatles records.

"So Brian asked (Capitol president) Alan Livingston, 'If I could get them an appearance on a major U.S. television show, would that make a difference?'" Lawrence told TODAY. "Alan said yes, thinking it would never happen. But Epstein persuaded Sullivan and that's what ultimately convinced Alan. He was impressed."

DEADWOOD | After being banned from town for more than two decades, mystics, psychics and soothsayers still may not be welcome in this Northern Hills community.

At the request of the Deadwood Chamber & Visitor Bureau, the Deadwood City Commission Tuesday night discussed repealing an ordinance that prohibits fortune tellers, clairvoyants and other mediums from setting up shop.

For the Deadwood Chamber, the prohibition is preventing it from marketing mystical events that could increase non-gaming visitation and expand the town’s offerings.

“I think we have a lot of hauntings in Deadwood that people would be interested in,” said chamber events coordinator Sarah Anderson. “Visitors are drawn to mystery. They’re just naturally curious. This is an opportunity to explore other options for our visitors.”

Anderson noted that two nationally syndicated television shows had featured the purportedly haunted Bullock Hotel and Fairmont Hotel and its Oyster Bay Bar in recent years.

She said the chamber would like to consider offering ghost tours and other special events, such as psychic fairs.

“How awesome would it be to bring in somebody like John Edwards, a recognized professional medium who has made presentations all over the world?” Anderson asked. “This ordinance would stop that type of presentation.”

The local ministerial association, however, apparently doesn't consider it awesome at all.

Commissioners Georgeann Silvernail and Jim VanDenEykl said they each had been contacted by representatives of the ministerial association this week who were adamantly opposed to repealing the ordinance.

“They feel this ordinance was set for a very good reason,” Silvernail said, adding she believed repealing the measure might “open the doors” to questionable activities.

“Give an inch, they take a mile, and I’ve seen it happen before,” she said.

“What is unholy about a ghost tour?” a dumb-founded Mayor Chuck Turbiville asked, calling the prohibition an “antiquated ordinance.”

“I don’t see this as having any harm to the religious community,” he said.

But local resident Ardene Lance said she opposed repealing the ordinance, arguing such activities were not family-friendly.

“I do oppose something like this, because I wouldn’t bring families to something like this,” Lance said. “Fortune tellers or psychics … I don’t want someone in my family to go down this path. I think another path should be taken and that should be in the religious realm.

“What are we leaving for our children?” Lance asked the commission. “Ouija boards and something like that, I don’t think that is the answer.”

Following 15 minutes of discussion and with Silvernail the lone dissenter, the commission voted 4-1 to hold a public hearing on the proposal on Feb. 3. Mayor Turbiville said a representative of the ministerial association would be asked to offer comments.
