2012 - Life Management in a binder

One of my goals for 2012 is to get all my to do's, schedules, cleaning, cooking, planning, commitments, etc gathered together in a neat little package so I can, from day to day, know whether I am coming or going. I used to be completely organized, minute by minute in a nifty lil planner I carried around. Then the world of smart phones and babies happened. This past year was a whirlwind and flew by way too fast. I don't want that kind of year again. In steps the home management binder. I have too many menus, calendars, check lists, and post it notes spread from here to there that I need to organize into one cutesy binder.

You can find tons of information on building your home's binder online. Just google Home Management Binder. It really is a person by person thing, and needs to be coordinated to your lifestyle.

Since I am on a quest to find my favorite printables for my binder, I thought I would share. Maybe its time for you to challenge yourself to creating some sort of binder too?

The Project Girl 2012 Weekly Calendar with chores --- this site has an annual sale in Jan. so I am waiting to see if I can get a deal on the 1st. It's only 12.99 now and would save me hours of creating my own documents...however, my "never pay retail" side is kicking in.

Christmas Tree Cupcakes

Baking, Baking, Baking...just keep Baking. Or is it swimming? I think Dory (Finding Nemo) sang it as swimming swimming swimming...but its baking baking baking in my head. May have something to do with all the baking going on around here. Something about the holidays brings out my inner baker. I've always been a cook and not a baker. 2011 brought me into my baking side of life. I mastered the cupcake, and making oat flour cookies this year...and I'm excited to see what new talents I discover in 2012!

I happened upon this post from Bakerella featuring their oh so beautiful cupcakes.

So when it came time to make treats for children's church...I went this route. Only, I had helping hands a.k.a. kids...

I used Wilton's melting chips in green and painted the melted candy onto each tree with a basting brush. Then I let the kids add M&Ms and a gumdrop top while I got busy on the cupcakes. Each tree was centered on the cupcake and then I piped icing around the base. Add red sprinkles ... Done! It was a fun, quick project we all enjoyed!

And I am pretty sure the kids at church will enjoy eating just as much as we enjoyed making them!

Filling your advent Calendar

What do you put in your Advent Calendars? We are doing a filled advent calendar this year for the first time. In years past we just had a countdown calendar that we moved the snowflake from number to number. This year I am making an advent calendar with an activity or gift in each day.

I love this Free printable from The Petit Cadeau! Its full of ideas and premade cards ready to add to your calendar! There are extras so you can pick and choose what you prefer. I'm going to avoid filling it with tons of candy and gifts, and lean more on the activty side.

Christmas Advent Calendars

I've had an Advent Calendar that we used for several years, however, it saw its last Christmas last year. It was a simple, store bought countdown calendar. You simply moved the snowflake to the correct date until Christmas day. I loved having it for J, simply to avoid the 25 days of "how many more days?" question. He knew he could go count it himself!

This is year I am planning to DiY one. I love the idea of adding little trinkets and gifts for each day. We can deter not only the "how many days" question but also the "can we open a gift" one too! Lil Bug won't quite understand the concept yet, but I think its a great tradition to start with her....I love family traditions!

Sun, Moon, Stars Mobile

Lil Bug and I are working on yellow and reading Good Night Moon (when I find the book, it's grown legs and disappeared somewhere in this house). Today we made a sun, moon, and stars mobile. It was quite simple and she loves it!

You will need these two print outs (printed on card stock for best results)

Sun & Moon

Stars

Yellow construction paper or card stock cut into 2-3 inch strips
stapler and staples
glue
foil
string or ribbon

While I was cutting out the moon and sun, Bug colored the stars.

I added foil (bling bling) to the back of the sun, moon and stars after I cut them out.

Bug colored on the foil with yellow markers.

I had some tiny star stickers that we added to the stars. This helped incorporate some hand eye coordination skills! They were so tiny!

Then we stapled the strips of paper together, end to end to form a circle.

We attached all the sun, moon, and stars to the circle with ribbon....added ribbon to hang.....

and we now have a sun, moon, and stars mobile!

Bug and I have started her tot school program...and I am steadily building it as we go. I can work on weeks ahead while she works on the activities for the current week. Its working, but I don't recommend it. However, I just couldnt find an all in one plan that I wanted to do, so me being me, I took on building my own.

This week is RED, "A", and APPLES!

We read Ten Apples Up On Top!

I made an Apple felt board set with a picture of herself and apples to put "up on top". She loves it!

We recycled a parmesean cheese container to sort red pom poms into.

I used the RED color matching cards from Homeschool Creations. I laminated the cards and then put them on a ring for Bug to carry around with her.

I gathered red items from around the house and created an eye-spy board.

We did some painting ....

....and threaded Fruit Loops onto a Pipe Cleaner to make a worm for our newly painted Apple.

Of all days, Lydia chooses this one to be camera shy!

And made an edible bracelet.

We ate some Apple Shake Ups.

1 tsp sugar
1tsp cinnamon
1/2 apple, cubed
1 plastic bag

Add sugar, cinnamon, apple cubes to bag. Seal tight. Shake Shake Shake!
Eat up!

Now that the wee ones are well on their way to feeling better, I've got the need to organize some things. Maybe all the surfaces I wiped down with Lysol this week has me thinking I should minimize the stuff on those surfaces... School Supply Birthday Cake

Teachers have birthdays too! In order to do something special for J's 3rd grade teacher on her birthday, we decided to make her a cake...out of school supplies.

Based on a tutorial I found on The Butlers blog I headed out to Walmart who is currently clearancing a lot of school supplies in order to fit in their Halloween products. Armed with the following supplies, I began construction on the gift of the year!

Rubberbands of all sizes
1 roll paper towels
4 composition notebooks
7 boxes of crayons
4 packs of pens

1 pack of mechanical pencils
3 bottles Hand Sanitizer
4 post it notes
10 glue sticks
Hat box lid
Ribbon
Tape
&Teacher Notecard by Janna Wilson

Cover hat box with ribbon. This is bottom of cake. You could also use a cake round base, covered with pretty paper...or cut a circle out of cardboard.

Attach notebooks to paper towel roll to create your center base. Secure with rubber bands.

Add items, securing with rubber bands as needed.

I used an empty paper towel roll to form the glue stick circle...then I stuffed it into the center of the paper towel roll to hold to the top of my cake. Again...secure with rubber bands.

Add Ribbon to cover up your rubber bands.

Add a card...and other embellishments. I would have loved to add some flowers but J was against that. It still had to look like it came from a boy.

It's that time of year in Florida when you may wake up to a nice cool morning but feel the heat come lunch time. It makes me want to decorate for Fall and hope it beckons it to just come on already. We also have the "Indian Summer" lurking around the corner. The start of football season just screams fall for me. So, I know in my heart of hearts, its not time to put away the shorts but I do think I will go ahead and get all the Fall decorations and see if it doesn't entice Fall to just show up.

Back To School

While my son has been in school going on 3 weeks now, the next county over started this week. We attend church in that county, so most of J's friends started school this week. To kick off the school year, they got to have a Back to School party during Wednesday night Bible Study last night.

I had to really step out there to try my hand at decorated cupcakes. And of course I just had to bring something school related! I decided on Apple Cup Cakes after seeing several easy ideas online.

I started with a white cake mix, doctored it up a bit with my secret ingredient. Classic buttercream icing does not take the red food coloring I poured in it, then poured some more. We ended up with a rather pinkish color, but I sprinkled red sugar on top. I used Tootsie Rolls for stems, and cut leaves out of laffy taffy that I'd squished and rolled out slightly. Gummy worms (or in our case Sour Gummy worms) made it a huge hit with the kiddos!

I used a free printable from It IS What It Is blog to make these Smarty Pants favors.

I fought this little rascal off the cupcake I was attempting to take a picture of...

It's been a fun food kinda month! First I decided I had to do something with a GIANT watermelon sitting on my counter. After much searching, I decided on this:

I call it Shark! Sorry about the low quality pictures. My Camera battery was dead and I only got pictures with my phone. I really didn't know that this guy would turn out as well as he did, and it was after I filled him with fruit and took him to Ladies Night at church that I thought I would blog him.

There are so many images online for Watermelon Shark, that I just copied what they had done. There was no real tutorial to follow. Maybe, I can do it again and make up a tutorial for you....maybe.

Mr. Popper's Penguins: Summer Reading Ch 5 & 6

Have you made it to Chapter 5 yet? Mr. Popper and Captain Cook are settling in and figuring each other out! I think I am a little more excited to get through the book than J is! Even more excited to go see the movie! But I really want to make it through the book before we see the movie....

Mr. Popper's Penguins: Summer Reading Ch 3 & 4

I am humbled by those that love my lesson plan for Mr. Popper's Penguins. I must post more chapters huh? We are currently working on our Penguin Cards from chapter 2, and while J cuts I am posting here, for you. I must give credit where credit is due. My lessons started from a lesson plan I found on HomeSchool Share. I modified it to suit our learning style. Now on with the Lesson!

Mr. Popper's Penguins Ch 3 & 4.

To keep Lil Bug busy while her brother works on his summer reading, I made her a felt board with a felt Penguin and felt fish. She loves taking the fish off and putting them back on, over and over. We work on counting and colors with the fish...and of course the penguin eats the fish.

The board is an old cork board that I glued a large piece of felt to.

To make the penguin I used a template I found at Homemade by Jill. The fish pattern I got at Craftstylish. You can look through Google images for penguin and fish patterns as well, finding the one you like the best.

Armed with my Hot Glue gun, and my felt pieces...we created a nice looking penguin!

I should also mention that in Chapter 2 of the summer reading camp lesson, I had J put together a puzzle.

Found it! I wasn't sure I would find in online, as we've had it awhile. But this is it! It took him a good 30 min. to put together, and then he spent another 30 min. exploring. I'd say it was worth it and we will use it again!

Mr. Popper's Penguins: Summer Reading Ch 1 & 2

In an effort to keep reading high on the list of "likeable activities" in our house, I put together a Chapter by Chapter lesson plan for the book, Mr. Popper's Penguins. J has already started and so far its a hit! Getting him started is a challenge, but once he opens the book he's determined to do all the activities.

I started with the information I found at Home School Share and went from there. I tweaked and added and cut to fit with our style and the things J likes to do.

We have no set schedule, I am taking a "when you are ready" approach. The only requirement is that he read a chapter and complete the associated activities before moving on to the next chapter.

Here's a peek at what I've put together for the first 2 chapters! You are free to use, just don't publish as your own! If you share please link back to me for credit!

My Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

Happy Fourth of July!! In honor of the brave, I thought I'd share an American favorite!

EVERYONE has their favorite cookie recipe...or at least remains on the search for their favorite. I have only recently become a fan of baking. And baking cookies was a FAIL time and time again. Then I stumbled upon a recipe that changed my view of homemade, fresh out of the oven, made from scratch cookies. Nabisco, I've moved on.

It all started from a post here on Yesterday on Tuesday. That would be the blog, Yesterday on Tuesday, not a reference to time. I loved the idea of making my own oat flour and began my adventure into Chocolate Chip recipe perfection.

I kept trying different things until not only am I able to repeat the recipe again and again (I'm bad about noting what I do when I tweak recipes), but I am confident to share with the world my version. So, if you think you are not a baker, think again. This recipe is for you!

Start with the oats. Oats + Blender = Oat Flour

Sweet , soft oat flour. Makes me feel good about eating cookies.
We all need some fiber don't we?

Add other flour, baking soda & powder, and salt. Blend.
I love my Blender. It has found a permanent home on my counter...and that's a good thing. I don't like a lot of appliances on the counter.

Cream butter and sugars together. This is where the good for you ends.
But your family will love you...and that makes it all OK.

Again, blender comes in handy. The pouring spout on the blender makes the flour slide in nice and smooth. No poofs of flour powder everywhere! Just remember to turn the mixer on low as the flour goes in.

My Cookie scoop. I spray my scoop with non stick spray several times throughout the scooping process. When the dough begins to stick, I wipe out the scoop and spray with non stick cooking spray...and scoop again.

I also spray my pan each time I take baked cookies off and add new scoops.

My cookie mounds. Must remind myself every time, the more cookie dough I eat now, the less cookies we have to eat later. Yes, I know I know...raw eggs, could end badly. I just can't resist cookie dough! YUM!

Bake at 375 for approx. 12 min. Some days my oven does this in 12 min. Some days its 13 min. The key is to look for the "just turning brown" stage. The peaks and edges of the cookies will be golden brown, but not the entire cookie. Bake any longer, and your cookies will be hard.

Hot, gooey cookies, fresh from the oven. You must resist the temptation to eat now. They still have 5 min of baking to do as they rest. Trust me...I've done it. Their gooey. Let them do their thing. It's good for them, and you learn patience.

Chocolate Chip Cookies with Oat Flour
Printable Recipe Here

This makes anywhere from 2 - 3 dozen cookies...depending on size of your scoops!

2 ½ cups oats (old fashion)
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
2 cups chocolate chips
2 cups chopped walnuts (optional)
non stick cooking spray

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Blend oats in blender or food processor until powder like substance. You now have oat flour.
Add white flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Pulse blender few times to mix.

In bowl of mixer, cream butter. Add both sugars and mix well. Add eggs and vanilla, mix well. Set mixer to low speed, and slowly add flour mixture. Pick up mixer speed to medium and mix until combined well. Add chocolate chips and walnuts. Mix well.

Spray cookie sheets with non stick spray. Spray cookie scoop with spray. Scoop dough into mounds on sprayed cookie sheet. Bake at 375 for 12 min. (more or less depending on oven and cookie mound size) When cookies are just turning golden, remove from oven. Allow to rest on pan for 5 minutes then move to cooling rack.

Sip & See Baby Shower

Last night I assisted in hosting a baby shower for a sweet Lil Violet. I've uploaded some pictures at Catch My Party. However, there are a few ideas I think you'll love!

Top Row: Berry Skewers, Veggie Cups, Pudding Cups
Bottom Row: Limeade Bar, Wishes for Baby, Cookie Favors

Berry Skewers: I don't think I need to explain...berries + wooden skewers! You could use ANY berries you desire. Our berry of choice was anything in the purple family since our Baby Shower colors were green and purple.

Veggie Cups: I love this idea and how now used it several time. Just squeeze your favorite veggie dip into bottom of cup and add veggie sticks! This works great for simple snacks for the kiddos too.

Pudding Cups: We made a simple a chocolate pudding and poured it into individual tea cups to keep with our Sip & See theme. Crushed oreos and whip cream on top. Yum! Leftovers are in my fridge calling my name.

Limeade Bar: Very popular! Limeade (from frozen concentrate) and 7up, that's it. Guests were able to customize their Limeade with a mix in...we offered cherries, strawberries, blackberries, watermelon & blueberries. It's fun to see what people with try!

Mr Popper's Penguins: Summer Reading

Our book has arrived! The movie is out! And a summer reading plan is set and ready for us to start next week. In an effort to get J to read and Lil Bug started in her "tot school" activities, I've put together a mini series to go along with Mr Popper's Penguins. J and I will read through the book together, doing activities and crafts that go along with the chapters....with Lydia tagging along with special age appropriate activities for her as well as letting her help with other crafts. Not sure how long it will take us, I haven't planned it on a day by day basis. Its summer...and anything is possible! However...WE WILL MAKE THROUGH THE BOOK! I am stating that on the WWW for all the world to see and hold me accountable.

You'll travel with us as we travel with Mr Popper and his Penguins! So be on the lookout for posts concerning our penguin adventures!
