I want to give a huge thank you to the people at github and the people behind the plugins for Atom.io.

Atom.io is all the best from Notepad++, Sublime, and Cloud9 IDE.

It’s easy to install, portable, and awesome!

My favorite features: (Some via plugins)

SSH File Browser

CSS Hex Colors applied in editor (Awesome for CSS hacking)

Mini Code Quick Scroll Pane

Multi Line editing

Lots more, and I wish I had time to go into more detail here. I will create a Youtube tutorial soon on how to quickly get started with Atom.io

UPDATED* 2015 Hey, just bringing another software review, this time it’s a defrag utility called Mydefrag.

In the context of administering computers, defragmentation is a process that reduces the amount of fragmentation in file systems. It does this by physically organizing the contents of the disk to store the pieces of each file close together and contiguously. MyDefrag was formally called JkDefrag (Named after the creator, Jeroen Kessles), which is still available in a portable version here.

MyDefrag is fully functional freeware, no cost, no time limit, no advertisements.

I like MyDefrag because it is so well designed. It’s based on the standard defragmentation API by Microsoft, a system library that is included in Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, 2008, and Win7. Most defragmenters are based on this API, including the free defragmenter that comes with Windows and many commercial defragmenters. Basically all MyDefrag does is send “move this file to that location” commands to the API. The API is part of the operating system and can safely move almost any file on the disk, without risk and while the computer is in full use.

Mydefrag attempts to move all your data to the front of the drive, it’s a known fact the the front of the drive can be up to 200 times faster than the end! My Defrag also organizes files into different zones, like directories, Windows files, files used while booting, regular files, and rarely used files. Frequently accessed files are placed at the beginning of the harddisk, and files that are commonly used together are placed in close proximity to each other. This results in a dramatic speed increase, and is in fact more important than defragmentation. The program comes with scripts with a zone organization suitable for most users, power users can customize the zones through scripts.

Sorting the files on your disk can give you even more speed. There are several sorting strategies to choose from. Most of them will take a lot of data shuffling, taking a lot of time for MyDefrag to complete, and therefore should only be used occasionally.

Features:

Intelligent design.

User scripts for different configurations.

Can be ran from Scheduled Tasks, Network Scripts (Active Directory for example) or even run as a screensaver.

64 bit support for enhanced performance.

Good for novices as well as experts.

MyDefrag is fully functional freeware, no cost, no time limit, no advertisements. The MyDefrag site is http://www.MyDefrag.com/.

A NOTE ABOUT DEFRAGGING: Defragmentation and optimization will not only make a hard drive faster, butit can also lengthen it’s life span, because the disk will have less work to do and therefore have less wear and tear. Also, it will refresh and strengthen the magnetic data on the harddisk by simply reading the (weakened) data and rewriting it fresh. However, defragmenting and optimizing is work, so excessive defragmenting and optimizing can actually cause more wear and tear than it prevents.

I saw this video and Gene Roddenberry came to mind. Instead of a great depression, maybe we can achieve a different, new kind of society if humans can resist the urge to starve poor people.

From triviumquadrivium

So, in the end, could our present Earth ever be like Star Trek earth? Yep, but we need:

a) relatively unlimited manufacturing capacity (e.g., with replicators).

b) relatively low population on Earth, and a land-distribution system.

c) an effective world democracy, working on a federated level, with varieties of local democracy.

d) slowly, a more intelligent populace at large, which would naturally tend to reach for more abstract, long-term goals.

If we could do this, oh, and also:

e) get rid of a lot of institutions which right now are not very nice (e.g., parasitic corporations),

f) and parasitic, exploitative governments,

g) and anti-rational, anti-humanist dogmas which cause people to value themselves over others – i.e., which teach them not to be empathetic (e.g., Fox News, Ayn Rand enthusiasts, religious fundamentalists),

Then yes, we could see Gene Roddenberry’s vision of an ideal, Utopian Star Trek Earth become a reality!

I could have easily called this article “How to hack and take control of an entire Windows Network” but that would draw a lot of negative attention, and it probably should. Let’s start off with a little background on the terminology for those who don’t know that much about Window’s methods of networking. (You can skip to the next section otherwise) A “Domain Admins” is is the security group for users who have administrator rights on every machine that is a member of the domain. A domain is like a workgroup of computers that are under control of the local Active Directory Server. If you’re not in the domain you don’t have access to much. We’re going to change that, by gaining this level of access. There are two basic types of users. Administrators, and Users. Users aren’t allowed to do very much, can’t install software, change things, etc. Whereas Administrators have total control. Local administrators have control of that one computer only. Domain Administrators have control over all pc’s that are part of the domain. In particular they have access to the root share, C$ the default share on every windows professional based pc. If you can become Domain admin, you can access every file on every computer through this share! Now many legacy applications will fail to run as a simple user, so it’s common practice to make a “User” a “Local Admin” of a computer. That means that user has access to add printers, add/remove software of their own pc. This was the pc is still managed, but the user has more freedom to blow up their computer doing awesome stunts like deleting c:/windows/system32 to save space. “But I don’t use that so I thought it was ok to delete…” If you can grasp all that, I’ll go ahead into the description of the “How” you elevate from “Local Admin” to “Domain Admin”

How to a turn my local admin into a Domain admin?

Ok, this is where I’m going to scare you a bit. It’s easy, you don’t need any tools, or the advanced knowledge of expert know how. You only need to type these two lines into a batch file!

net user /domain /add dirtyhackor mysecretpass

net group /domain "Domain Admins" /add dirtyhackor

Have No Fear

The first line creates a new user on the domain name dirtyhackor and the second line add that user to the Domain Admins Group. The masters of Windows domains maybe laughing right now, because they know this script won’t fly as it. Because the users don’t have access to create users, and they will only get an error, and Mr. Admin you are to sly to run a batch script without reading it first right? Well how about these apples, place the script in the all users folder under Programs in the “Startup Folder” on this computer. Now when the domain admin walks by to fix your computer, when they log in they will unknowingly run this script and voila! Now you have a secretly created user called “dirtyhackor” on the domain with full access to everything!

But how to get a domain admin to access your computer? A little sabotage can usually get a member of the domain to sign into your(target) computer. Many users are also members of multiple computers as well. What if you wanted to get you’re newly found batch script on to all of the computer’s you are a local admin? Just one more line of batch will let us easily spread the script to other computers over the network!

net user /domain /add dirtyhackor mysecretpass

net group /domain "Domain Admins" /add dirtyhackor

for /F %%i in ('net view') do copy /Y %0 "%%ic$documents and settingsall usersstart menuprogramsstartup"

As you can see, the two lines above are the same as in the previous example, but the third line will scan for all pc’s on the local network, and for the ones that you have local admin rights to, will copy this script to each computer you have access to! So let’s say three people work at the one workstation. Sam logs in, and this spreads to all computers he has access to. Then Sally logs in and it spreads to all of her workstations, Followed by Steve. If they all have access to 3 computers each, that’s 7 computers with the script on it now. Then if anyone uses their computers…. the pattern of spreading continues throughout the network! Eventually a domain admin will run the script and you’re in!

[section label=”Ramifications” anchor=”Ramifications”]Ramifications

What can you do with this power? Install software on any pc, remotely, keyloggers, send spam, webservers, game servers, backup storage, anything you would want to. SO if you’re a network admin (Like me) You’re probably really thinking about all the times you’ve logged in to a workstation! So what can you do against this threat? Well being aware of this type of trickery is a start, and secondly, make sure you assign domain admin to as few people as possible.

Spread the word! E-mail this to someone who you know needs to be aware of this, and please stumble or dig this, as that will really help get the word out! Thanks for reading!!! +Green

Google will begin rolling out Priority Inbox for Gmail(<-Hover for video), a new feature for managing tons of e-mail. Your inbox will never be the same again.

Priority Inbox is Google’s attempt to solve the e-mail woes of Gmail power users. At its core, the feature is an algorithm; Priority Inbox uses information such as keywords, the people you e-mail the most and your e-mail habits to select the most pressing e-mails in your inbox. Those e-mails are brought to the top of your Gmail and marked as important so you deal with them first.

Priority Inbox is also an adaptive algorithm. Marking items as important or unimportant teaches the system what types of messages you deem the most urgent. You can also use Gmail’s filters to automatically mark certain messages as important (for example, from your boss or your spouse),

The new feature appears as a new menu item just above the “Inbox” link. Instead of indicating how many unread e-mails you have in your inbox, Priority Inbox only displays how many priority e-mails still require your attention. These appear at the top of Gmail as “Important and unread.”

The second layer of the new layout is your starred e-mails. These messages appear in their own section under the Priority Inbox. The goal is to get users to star important e-mails they have read but for whatever reason still need in their inboxes. Under the “Starred” section is “Everything else,” which contains the rest of your unarchived inbox.

The Impact of the Priority Inbox

During the many months of testing the feature internally, the search giant found that users spent 16% less time reading insignificant e-mail. If you do the math, that’s about a full week’s worth of time saved. According to Google, once someone switches to Priority Inbox, he or she never needs or wants to go back.

We can see why. We’ve had the chance to test out Priority Inbox for the last few days and discuss the new feature with Gmail Product Director Keith Coleman, and we’re impressed. Our inboxes get filled with hundreds of e-mails daily, but only a few of them require our immediate attention. Even with dozens of Gmail filters, important messages often get lost in the pile, leading to lost opportunities or missed meetings.

Priority Inbox, while not perfect, is a dramatic step toward solving that problem. Important messages bubble to the top, while e-mails that still require attention can sit in the Starred section until they’re addressed. It basically takes the Gmail Multiple Inboxes feature and adds a smart algorithm for cherry picking the threads that require your attention.

Coleman says that the company has been working on the feature for 18 months, but the original version of Gmail had something similar to this before it launched, but was removed because it simply wasn’t ready for mass consumption. Now it is refined enough for use by all.

What do you think of Priority Inbox? Let us know in the comments!

When you try to add your blog’s rss feed address to new Digg 4 alpha import feedsettings and hit verify after adding verification key in a post and publish it, it says:

Unable to find verification key, please try again – if this is an error, report this bug.

This can have a few reasons for happening, but patience and persistence paid off for me. Here are some tips for when/if you get the error.

Disable any caching plugins on your site that may be handing out the old feed.

Make sure you have a post in your feed that contains the ID number, if your feed limit the post length then the feed may not have the complete id number needed to verify your feed.

Disable Feedburner, and try to bypass feedburner when using the Digg v4 Feed Import validation.

When all else fails try again in 10 mins….

And remember, the ID can be anywhere in the feed, but I recommend in the first sentence of your latest post, not in the title, as the title may get shortened on some CMS’s out there.

Good luck! Happy Digging!
