To download the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant, go to the Windows 8 upgrade site, then click on the blue Download Upgrade Assistant button. The file is only about 5MB, so it shouldn't take long for the download to complete.
To run the upgrade assistant, double-click on Windows8-UpgradeAssistant.exe. It will immediately begin checking your PC for compatible apps and devices. (it takes some time so don't panic). Once it's finished, the Upgrade Assistant will display how many of your apps and devices are compatible, and how many require your attention.

Facebook has once again redesigned the look of its Photos service. This time, the company is attempting to beautify the look of Photos on your and others Timeline.

The new landing page is just an update of the old one: it has all of a Facebook user's photos on one page, which Facebook friends can easily Like and comment on.

Now when you click Photos at the top of your timeline, you’ll see larger pictures that fill up the page. You can use the menu to find shots you’re tagged in, pictures you’ve shared and albums you’ve created.

Given that this feature is part of Timeline, it of course offers you a way to highlight photos for featuring on your Timeline. To do so, click the star button beside a given photo.

Before today, when you typed an equation into Google — say, “18 x 5″ — the answer (90, if you must know) would appear in bold above you actual search results. Now Google has gone one step further, giving you your answer on a virtual calculator.

The blue-hued calculator appears above your results, as before, and has 34 buttons, including standard trigonometric functions, exponents and buttons for the transcendental numbers, pi and e.

Bonus: It also works on mobile. In our quick test, it appeared in both Safari and Chrome on iOS and of course on Android as well. Although the scientific functions aren’t visible in portrait mode, they appear when you flip your phone to landscape — a trick Google’s borrowing from the iOS-standard calculator.

Google wants your real name on YouTube

If you try to comment on YouTube, you will be prompted to change your username to your real name.

With the furore caused by Google's insistence on real names on its Google+ network (one that was ultimately solved by a verification program) still fresh in our minds, the internet giant is now trying to get YouTube users to switch over to their real names on its video streaming website.

John Fisher, Software Engineer, said in a Google blog post last month:

One Google-wide identity was something that proved popular with new YouTube users when we began offering it in March, so we are now extending it to existing users.

This will give you more options for how your videos are seen and discovered on YouTube. However, we realise that using your full name isn't for everyone. Maybe people know you by your YouTube username. Perhaps you don't want your name publicly associated with your channel. To continue using your YouTube username, just click "I don't want to use my full name" when you see the prompt. Stay tuned for more ways to use this username in other Google products and services in coming months.

Ramadan traditions online on YouTube

Google's bringing tradition and technology closer together by putting a digital spin on the holy month of Ramadan.

As explained in a blog post by Maha Abouelenein — Google's head of communications for the Middle East and North Africa — the search engine giant will have a YouTube channel dedicated to sharing Islamic prayers live from Mecca, a new YouTube channel which will offer 50 "premium Ramadan shows" on the same day that they air, and Google+ Hangouts which will begin after sundown.

The Google+ Hangouts will coincide with the traditional evening break-the-fast meals (called the "Iftar") and involve celebrity chefs who will share recipes, doctors who will give pointers on healthy eating habits, actors who'll talk about their favorite Ramadan shows, poets, religious figures and more.

Innocent Muslims being killed in Burma; no voice raised by Human Rights Organizations yet!

Muslims all over the world are dying at the hands of their governments, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, when it comes to Burma, the number of people being killed on daily basis is countless yet the human rights organizations around the world have not raised any voice in order to adequately address the outrageous killing of minority Muslims in Burma.

As per the reports, many ethnic Rohingya Muslims in Burma are being killed on daily basis. According the sources, more than 650 of nearly one million Rohingya Muslims have been murdered in Burma till date and almost over 1,200 are missing. Furthermore, around 90,000 have been displaced.

Reportedly, Rohingya Muslims settled in Burma back in the eighth century but still they have not been accepted by the Buddhist community and this is a reason why they are killing innocent Muslims on daily basis.

Countries like the United States have always been prominent in such issues. They have always come out to rescue nations like Israel against Palestine. Nevertheless, since this time Muslims are being killed, they are all silent.

What is happening in Burma, also known as Myanmar, is a direct violation of the international laws and should be categorized as crime against humanity but unfortunately everyone has turned a blind eye and a deaf ear to the plight of the Muslims.

The thing which hurts the most is that Burma’s peace prize laureate Aung Sen Suu Kyi, who once said that ‘the struggle for democracy and human rights in Burma is a struggle for life and dignity’ has also not highlighted the issue yet.

Recently some of the Muslim and Buddhist organizations of India wrote a letter to Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, in which they demanded his intervention to stop killings of Muslims in Burma.

Well, all said and done, whatever is being done with the helpless minority in Burma should be highlighted immediately in order to stop the Burmese government from doing such a cruel treatment.

If you’ve been trying to obtain another Twitter or Facebook username, you probably know that you are required to associate a different email address for each one you create. Luckily, if you have a Gmail email address, there is a simple workaround to this problem.

Let’s say your Gmail email address is dronzer92@gmail.com. If you add a dot (.) anywhere in the username, all email messages will still reach your inbox. In other words, any of these and other related email addresses will still make it to your account:

Gmail allows only one registration for any given username. Facebook has a small, but useful set of keyboard shortcuts you can use to navigate the social networking site.

The shortcuts work best with Chrome in Windows and Firefox on Mac OS X, because they only need one modifier key, plus the shortcut key. Also keep in mind that the number shortcuts must be pressed from the number row; they don't work with the number pad.

India is now the world’s biggest source of spam email

India has been given the dubious honour of being named the top source of spam in the world in a report from Internet security firm Kaspersky.

A recent report by Kaspersky Lab, a Moscow-based global Internet security firm, says more spam was sent from the south Asian giant than anywhere else in the world in the third quarter of the year.

An average of 79.8% of global email traffic was spam. Of that, 14.8% originated in India, with Indonesia and Brazil taking the second and third spots with 10.6% and 9.7% respectively.

As AFP reports, it appears that crackdowns on sending junk email in other countries have sent spammers to India, where laws on the practice are said to be lax. The size of the Indian Internet userbase is possibly a factor too – behind China and the USA it has the third largest number of Internet users in the world.

Kaspersky told AFP that lack of awareness of technical issues in India means that it’s easy for cyber-criminals to build ‘botnets’ of computers to carry out spam attacks without their users being aware.

The ball’s now in the Indian government’s court to provide laws that cure the country’s apparent spam epidemic.

Earth’s newest island rises from depths of the Red Sea

It’s the latest island to emerge from the depths of the Red Sea.

The island, which remains the peak of an active underwater volcano, was created by a wild eruption that occurred in the Red Sea earlier this month.

The newest island is located in between Haydock Island and Rugged Island — to barren islands in the Red Sea. The chain of small islands is located off the coast of Yemen. Running in a roughly northwest-southeast line, the islands poke above the sea surface, rising from a shield volcano.

The smoking island emerged from the sea earlier this month, surprising a group of fisherman who frequented the area. NASA officials later confirmed the reports, using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, or MODIS, on NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites. The Ozone Monitoring Instrument on NASA’s Aura satellite also detected elevated levels of sulfur dioxide, further indicating an eruption, said officials.

Meanwhile, the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured these high-resolution, natural-color images on December 23, 2011, and October 24, 2007. The image from December 2011 shows an apparent island where there had previously been an unbroken water surface. A thick plume rises from the island, dark near the bottom and light near the top, perhaps a mixture of volcanic ash and water vapor.

NASA officials said they will continue to monitor the situation in the Red Sea, adding that this region is part of the Red Sea Rift where the African and Arabian tectonic plates pull apart and new ocean crust regularly forms.

China tests 500 kph train after deadly crash

China has apparently tested a train with a top speed of 500 kilometers per hour (311 mph) despite lingering worries over the crash earlier this year of two high-speed trains that left about 40 dead.

Qingdao-based CSR Sifang, a subsidiary of train maker CSR, produced the six-car train partly out of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics, according to state media. The design was inspired by ancient Chinese swords.

The train, some 200 kph quicker than China's fastest trains, is experimental. It was based on CSR's CRH380A, which set a world train speed record at 486.1 kph (302 mph) last year.

The data from the test may be used for the expansion of China's rail network. The push is part of a national plan to build some 10,000 miles of high-speed rail linking large cities by 2020.

Xinhua News said the super-train has a maximum tractive force of 22,800 kilowatts, compared with 9,600 kilowatts for the CRH380 trains running on the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, which opened this year.

China's cabinet has criticized the Railways Ministry for lax safety standards in the wake of the July accident, in which one high-speed train rammed another that was stranded on the track following a lightning strike. A cabinet report threatened prosecutions over the crash.

The ministry lowered the speed limit to 300 kph from 350 kph following the accident.

Mission: Impossible 4 hits Box office this weekend

Hollywood is really banking on Christmas being a big weekend.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol with Tom Cruise already had a big Wednesday, grossing $8.5 million on the first day of the long Christmas weekend at the box office. Cruise’s fourth M:I film is expected to top the box office, giving Hollywood a much-needed Christmas present after three straight weeks of weak numbers. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is also expected to do well.

Ghost Protocol, The Incredibles director Brad Bird’s first live-action film, is expected to make a total of $45 million between Wednesday and Sunday, reports The Los Angeles Times. The film has actually been in theaters since last Thursday, debuting in over IMAX 400 theaters, so this is its first weekend in wide release. It has already made $25.7 million. Entertainment Weekly predicts that the film will make $27 million between Friday and Sunday.

David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo with Daniel Craig also had a strong Wednesday, which is expected to propel it to second place over the Christmas break. The R-rated film could make at least $30 million through the weekend, with $17 million of that coming over the weekend itself, predicts EW.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows should be able to make it to third place after a weak opening last weekend. The film could make at least $27 million, putting it just behind The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It could make around $15 million during the three-day weekend, but it is still far behind the first film in Guy Ritchie’s Holmesfranchise.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-wrecked, which made $3.9 million Thursday, according to Deadline, could wind up with $24 million by the end of the weekend. Between Friday and Sunday, it is expected to make around $12 million according to EW.

Bringing up the rear at the top of the box office will be Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin, which made $2.3 million on Wednesday and $2.4 million on Thursday. It could end up making around $16 million by the end of the weekend and just under $10 million between Friday and Sunday. That probably won’t matter too much to Spielberg, since the film has already made well over $200 million internationally.

Facebook, the biggest platform for social games, released its list of the most popular games of 2011.

Unlike most year-end lists, this one actually has quite a few surprises. I fully expected CityVille, Zynga’s hit social game, to top the list. Nope. According to Facebook’s measurements, that honor belongs to Gardens of Time.

In the update announcing the list, Facebook does say it is basing its ranking on “games that drew the most active users and received the highest user recommendations.”

Facebook has begun introducing a new feature which allows business pages to receive private messages from their fans on the social network.

The new communications option, which has appeared for Asia-based admins only so far — although this could be down to time difference — is a significant introduction that will allow businesses to interact more closely with customers on the service than ever before.

Consumer facing businesses will find the feature particularly useful as it enables more personal communication with individual customers, opening the possible of a greater level of customer service on Facebook. The move is also likely to cut down on the pain of off-topic comments on company pages and reduce communication lost when Facebook fans fail to take their comments to customer service channels outside of the social network.

Facebook Timeline Now Available to Everyone

Facebook's more than 800 million members will now be able to convert their profiles to the new Timeline design.

The world's largest social network announced Timeline in September 2011, and now it's available worldwide. The feature replaces current user profiles and dramatically overhauls how information is shared on the service.

"It's a way to tell all the important stories from your life on a single page," Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said when he announced the new feature at his company's F8 Conference.

Timeline shows all the updates a person has added to Facebook since they joined the site. It also follows the social network's desire to provide users with a single place to showcase what has happened in their lives over the years.

Aside from a prominent picture at the top and basic information below it, Timeline has a right sidebar listing years in chronological order that you can click on to see what a user shared on the site, who they made friends with, and other information for any given period. Timeline even includes a map where people can input where they've been around the world.

Facebook said this morning that people can head over to its Timeline information page and turn the feature on. Upon doing so, they will have seven days to review their timelines and decide whether certain photos or wall posts shared on the site over the years should be shared or kept hidden from view.

I loaded up Timeline this morning and was immediately hit with a sense of nostalgia. I went back to updates and posts friends put on my wall years prior. In many cases, they were things (and events) that I had long forgotten. But Facebook hadn't. And now, my friends and I can relive some of those moments.

Aside from that, I was pleased with Facebook's decision to let me customize just about everything in Timeline. If there was something I didn't think should be shared any longer, I simply made it private. And if certain information was worth sharing again, I made it publicly viewable.

Inevitably, some folks will complain about Timeline's design and Facebook heaping major changes on its user base. But from what I've seen so far, it's a solid update. It offers privacy features, it comes with a nice design, and it makes getting to know people (in the virtual world, at least) a bit easier.

Facebook said it will automatically push the timeline live seven days after someone signs up for the new feature. However, if folks are content with what's shared after reviewing it, they can push it live themselves at any point within that period.

First he was stepping down; then he wasn't. What is happening with gaming's greatest designer?

Following an interview published on Wednesday evening where Shigeru Miyamoto suggested he was planning to leave his current position at Nintendo for one where he could work on smaller, more personal projects, Nintendo was quick to deny this was the case. It's understandable why it would do this -- Nintendo's waning stock price took an immediate hit on the stock markets both here and in Japan out of fear the company would lose its creative leader and the man who created Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal (through a translator) he said,

We have to construct the structure so that the organization so that it can make it without me. I should also admit that it might be better without me; I mean that a different approach and different talent might emerge, though I shouldn’t dwell on this because then the article might indeed say ‘Mr. Miyamoto is thinking about retiring,’ because that is not the case.

In the interview with Wired that Nintendo has been trying to counteract, Miyamoto was quoted as saying, "Inside our office, I've been recently declaring, 'I'm going to retire, I'm going to retire.' I'm not saying that I'm going to retire from game development altogether. What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position."

He also said at the time he was interested in moving away from working on games with five-year development cycles to smaller, more personal projects, possibly even one where he would be the sole developer. In the WSJ interview, he stated he'd like to work on small ideas that could eventually turn into bigger games.

Twitter Announces major redesign

A faster, simpler way to stay close to everything you care about.

The changes were released Thursday in updates to Twitter's software for smartphones and tablet computers. Visitors to Twitter's website should start seeing the new look during the next few weeks.

With the changes, it will be easier to find people and companies with Twitter profiles. All it will take is typing an "@" symbol in front of a user's handle.

Entering a subject with a hash tag "#" in front of it will show everything on Twitter related to that topic. And clicking on a specific tweet will display any other exchanges tied to the message to provide further context about the discussion.

Profile pages are also being expanded so individuals and companies can showcase more information about themselves in text, photos and video.

The question was met with a wry smile that almost dismissed the question before he’d answered it but thankfully he continued:

“Yeah Google’s a great company and I think we want to look at and learn from everything that they do. But at the same time, people have shared a lot on Facebook and have already told a lot of their life story on Facebook. And we think that we have by far better tools for doing that.”
