<br>Event Description: Cleveland Web Design and Development Meetup

An overview of what we&#39;ll be covering for each week can be found under the heading &quot;This Week&#39;s Class&quot;. The overview is taken right from the books we&#39;ll be using. The class overview can be found at the forum post about them.

Classroom time will always be about 45 minutes of lecture, a 15 minute break, then 60 minutes hands on, team participation.

You MUST RSVP in this event page and via a phone call (440.521.7214) so I know you are coming. Just ask for Aoirthoir (ur hower). Those that RSVP Yes and don&#39;t show will not be invited to future classes, because a no show bumps someone else and isn&#39;t fair to other students. (We understand an occasional no-show, but if at all possible as soon as you know you cannot make a class, change your RSVP to no.) Maybe RSVPs are disabled. Also there can be no jumping in the middle of a course. You need to attend these from the beginning. Don&#39;t worry though, we will be running these courses at different times, so if you miss this one, you can attend another.

Reminder: The course is free, but I am asking for donations. Donations will help me cover the rent for the facility I am using, and other costs. A suggested donation range is between $5 to $20 per class. If you find the material, class time, help and suggestions you receive valuable, a donation is greatly appreciated. I will have a box available at each class, labeled donations, for those that are able and willing to donate.

&quot;This Week&#39;s Class&quot;
===================
This week we will be studying chapter 13 (not 14) of O&#39;Reilly&#39;s Head first HTML with CSS &amp; XHTML book. So be sure to bring your copy with you.

Getting Tabular

If it walks like a table and talks like a table... There comes a time in life when we have to deal with the dreaded tabular data. Whether you need to create a page representing your company’s inventory over the last year, or a catalog of your Beanie Babies collection (don’t worry, we won’t tell), you know you need to do it in HTML; but how? Well, have we got a deal for you: order now and in a single chapter we’ll reveal the secrets of tables that will allow you to put your very own data right inside HTML tables. But there’s more: with every order we’ll throw in our exclusive guide to styling HTML tables. And, if you act now, as a special bonus, we’ll throw in our guide to styling HTML lists. Don’t hesitate, call now!

The topics we&#39;ll be discussing are (from the book):

How do we make tables with HTML? How to create a table using HTML (page - 552)
What the browser creates (page - 553)
Tables dissected... (page - 554)
Adding a caption and a summary (page - 557)
Before we start styling, let&#39;s get the table back into Tony&#39;s page... (page - 559)
Getting those borders to collapse (page - 564)
How about some color? (page - 566)
Tony made an interesting discovery... (page - 567)
Another look at Tony&#39;s table (page - 568)
How to tell cells to span more than one row (page - 569)
The new and improved table (page - 571)
Trouble in paradise? (page - 572)
Overriding the CSS for the nested table headings (page - 576)
Giving Tony&#39;s site the final polish (page - 577)
Exercise Solutions (page - 588)

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Kind Regards,
Aoirthoir

&quot;This Week&#39;s Class&quot;
===================
This week we will be studying chapter 11 of O&#39;Reilly&#39;s Head first HTML with CSS &amp; XHTML book. So be sure to bring your copy with you.

Advanced Web Construction

It’s time to get ready for heavy construction. In this chapter
we’re going to roll out two new XHTML elements, called and . These are no simple “two by fours;” these are full blown steel beams. With and , you’re going to build some serious supporting structures, and once you’ve got those structures in place, you’re going to be able to style them all in new and powerful ways. Now, we couldn’t help but notice that your CSS toolbelt is really starting to fill up, so it’s time to show you a few shortcuts that will make specifying all these properties a lot easier. And, we’ve also got some special guests in this chapter, the pseudo-classes, which are going to allow you to create some very interesting selectors. (But, if you’re thinking that “pseudo-classes” would make a great name for your next band; too late, we beat you to it.)

The topics we&#39;ll be discussing are (from the book):

A close look at the elixirs HTML (page - 431)
Let&#39;s explore how we can divide a page into logical sections (page - 433)
Adding a border (page - 440)
An over-the-border test drive (page - 440)
Adding some real style to the elixirs section (page - 441)
The game plan (page - 442)
Working on the elixir width (page - 442)
Adding the basic styles to the elixirs (page - 447)
What we need is a way to select descendants (page - 453)
Changing the color of the elixir headings (page - 455)
Fixing the line height (page - 456)
It&#39;s time to take a little shortcut... (page - 458)
Adding s in three easy steps (page - 464)
The element and its multiple personalities (page - 468)
How can you style elements based on their state? (page - 469)
Putting those pseudo-classes to work (page - 471)
Isn&#39;t it about time we talk about the cascade? (page - 473)
The cascade (page - 475)
Welcome to the “What’s my specificity game” (page - 476)
Putting it all together (page - 477)
Exercise Solutions (page - 483)

Please contact me if you have any questions.

===================
This week we will be studying the chapter 10 of O&#39;Reilly&#39;s Head first PHP &amp; MySQL book. So be sure to bring your copy with you.

The topics we&#39;ll be discussing are (from the book):

Rules for replacement - regular expressions

String functions are kind of lovable. But at the same time, they’re limited. Sure, they can tell the length of your string, truncate it, change certain characters to other certain characters. But sometimes you need to break free and tackle more complex text manipulations. This is where regular expressions can help. They can precisely modify strings based on a set of rules rather than a single criterion.

Risky Jobs lets users submit resumes (page - 562)
Decide what your data should look like (page - 566)
Formulate a pattern for phone numbers (page - 569)
Match patterns with regular expressions (page - 570)
Build patterns using metacharacters (page - 572)
Fine-tune patterns with character classes (page - 579)
Check for patterns with preg_match() (page - 584)
Standardize the phone number data (page - 591)
Get rid of the unwanted characters (page - 592)
Matching email addresses can be tricky (page - 596)
Domain suffixes are everywhere (page - 598)
Use PHP to check the domain (page - 599)
Email validation: putting it all together (page - 600)

The topics we&#39;ll be discussing are (from the book):

Interfacing to the world, syndication and web services

It’s a big world out there, and one that your web application can’t afford to ignore. Perhaps more importantly, you’d rather the world not ignore your web application. One excellent way to tune the world in to your web application is to make its data available for syndication, which means users can subscribe to your site’s content instead of having to visit your web site directly to find new info. Not only that, your application can interface to other applications through web services and take advantage of other people’s data to provide a richer experience.

Owen needs to get the word out about Fang (page - 658)
Push alien abduction data to the people (page - 659)

From database to newsreader (page - 666)
Visualizing RSS (page - 669)
What makes a newsman tick (page - 671)
Dynamically generate an RSS feed (page - 672)
Link to the RSS feed (page - 676)
A video is worth a million words (page - 678)
Pulling web content from others (page - 680)
Syndicating YouTube videos (page - 681)
Make a YouTube video request (page - 682)
Owen is ready to build a REST request (page - 686)
YouTube speaks XML (page - 690)
Deconstruct a YouTube XML response (page - 694)
Visualize the XML video data695
Access XML data with objects (page - 696)
From XML elements to PHP objects (page - 697)
Drill into XML data with objects (page - 698)
Not without a namespace! (page - 699)
Fang sightings are on the rise (page - 701)
Lay out videos for viewing (page - 702)
Format video data for display (page - 703)

&quot;This Week&#39;s Class&quot;
===================
This week we will be expanding on chapter 12 of O&#39;Reilly&#39;s Head first HTML with CSS &amp; XHTML book. We will be adding our own twist, but having the book will definitely be helpful.

Cheating at Layout - Positioning Part Deux

This week&#39;s description is short and sweet. We&#39;re going to learn how to prototype a layout in a matter of minutes. We&#39;re going to learn how to rapidly change the layout without all of the headache typically associated with CSS Positioning. Our layouts are going to be easy, fast, cross browser compatible and will require only a tiny amount of extra code in our HTML. And no, we WONT be using Tables to do this. Just what will we be doing then? You will have to enroll in the course and come to this class to find out.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Kind Regards,
Aoirthoir

&quot;This Week&#39;s Class&quot;
===================
This week we will be studying the chapter 11 of O&#39;Reilly&#39;s Head first PHP &amp; MySQL book. So be sure to bring your copy with you.

The topics we&#39;ll be discussing are (from the book):

Drawing dynamic graphics - visualizing your data

Sure, we all know the power of a good query and a bunch of juicy results. But query results don’t always speak for themselves. Sometimes it’s helpful to cast data in a different light, a more visual light. PHP makes it possible to provide a graphical representation of database data: pie charts, bar charts, Venn diagrams, Rorschach art, you name it. Anything to help users get a grip on the data flowing through your application is game. But not all worthwhile graphics in PHP applications originate in your database. For example, did you know it’s possible to thwart form-filling spam bots with dynamically generated images?

&quot;This Week&#39;s Class&quot;
===================

===================
This week we will be studying the chapter i (yes lowercase i, it&#39;s an appendix...:D ) of O&#39;Reilly&#39;s Head first PHP &amp; MySQL book. So be sure to bring your copy with you.

The topics we&#39;ll be discussing are (from the book):

The Top Ten Topics (we didn&#39;t cover)

Even after all that, there’s a bit more. There are just a few more things we think you need to know. We wouldn’t feel right about ignoring them, even though they only need a brief mention. So before you put the book down, take a read through these short but important PHP and MySQL tidbits. Besides, once you’re done here, all that’s left are a couple short appendices... and the index... and maybe some ads... and then you’re really done. We promise!

#1. Retrofit this book for PHP4 and mysql functions (page - 714)
#2. User permissions in MySQL (page - 716)
#3. Error reporting for MySQL (page - 718)
#4. Exception handling PHP errors (page - 719)
#5. Object-oriented PHP (page - 721)
#6. Securing your PHP application (page - 723)
#7. Protect your app from cross-site scripting (page - 725)
#8. Operator precedence (page - 727)
#9. What’s the difference between PHP 5 and PHP 6 (page - 728)
#10. Reusing other people’s PHP (page - 730)

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Kind Regards,
Aoirthoir

&quot;This Week&#39;s Class&quot;
===================
This week we will be studying chapter 12 of O&#39;Reilly&#39;s Head first HTML with CSS &amp; XHTML book. So be sure to bring your copy with you.

Arranging Elements - Positioning Part 1

It’s time to teach your XHTML elements new tricks. We’re not going to let those XHTML elements just sit there anymore; it’s about time they get up and help us create some pages with real layouts. How? Well, you’ve got a good feel for the and structural elements and you know all about how the box model works, right? So, now it’s time to use all that knowledge to craft some real designs. No, we’re not just talking about more background and font colors, we’re talking about full blown professional designs using multi-column layouts. This is the chapter where everything you’ve learned comes together.

The topics we&#39;ll be discussing are (from the book):

Did you do the Super Brain Power? (page - 488)
Use the flow, Luke (page - 489)
What about inline elements? (page - 491)
How it all works together (page - 492)
How to float an element (page - 495)
Behind the scenes at the lounge (page - 497)
The new Starbuzz (page - 499)
Move the sidebar just below the header (page - 504)

<br />Event Description: Cleveland Web Design and Development Meetup

&quot;This Week&#39;s Class&quot;
===================
