Mike, Rooomate | Diptych

noreply@blogger.com (Ian Servin) — Fri, 04 Nov 2011 05:47:00 +0000

My roommate Mike has had the same profile picture forever so I thought I'd do him a favor and shoot him a new one. I also recently watched some video from the Gulf Photo Plus Shootout from the last couple of years and I really liked how Zack Arias used strobes in the background to add visual interest as well as some great rim lighting. This was shot on my D60 with an SB-600 in the back and a generic monolight snooted from camera right and above. The exposure is at 1/160th of a second to kill the ambient and f/22 to minimize spill from the strobes in my very small dorm. Originally, I wanted the guitar, which is just barely visible, to have more prominence when I designed the shot in my head, but I like the focus on his face and the tone that the directed light gives to the image. As an amateur, an issue is that I don't really have enough strobes and modifiers to work with to pinpoint small areas, and spill control is really necessary to prevent exposure of the light colored walls that are inches away behind and to the sides of Mike. Overall though, I'm happy with the outcome and so is my "client," that's what matters. It was a great lesson in compromise when shooting at a location that is far from ideal and good practice posing a model with someone I'm comfortable with.

Paul Taylor Dance Company | Hancher Rehearsal

noreply@blogger.com (Ian Servin) — Wed, 02 Nov 2011 13:00:00 +0000

This week, Iowa City has been lucky to play host to the dancers of Paul Taylor who performed this past evening. I was lucky enough to take some pictures of their dress rehearsal at West High School's auditorium. You can find a larger set via my flickr.

Happy Halloween!

Not bad for a 2AM shot in front of the door of my dorm room.
Strobist info:
SB-600 1/4 power at bottom of door
250w/s strobe w/ zebra brolly 45 and 45 camera right
Nikon D60
50mm f/1.8 at f/5.6ish

P.S. - manual focus and self portraits don't really go together so it's a bit soft...

Redundency

noreply@blogger.com (Ian Servin) — Sun, 16 Oct 2011 08:09:00 +0000

Just finished configuring a new addition to my technology family, a 1TB MyBook by WD. I got this one second hand from a friend looking to shed some external storage in favor of a newer, more svelte model and I jumped on the chance to expand my backup options for pennies on the gigabyte. I now have a USB hub situated on my desk hooked up to this as a backup of my entire laptop, another 80gb external drive for miscellaneous old files, and my printer. I have TimeMachine on my macbook set up to backup every file on my machine whenever my Mac is idling and it's great to know that my huge aperture library, which is essentially one big file, is now backed up automagically here and manually on the 80gig drive every so often. I think my clients will appreciate that too.

Procrastination on So Many Levels

noreply@blogger.com (Ian Servin) — Thu, 13 Oct 2011 04:26:00 +0000

It's been a long, long two weeks without shooting anything in particular. School (midterms) has picked up and I've been heavily caffeinated (hence the Diet Dr. pic) and shut inside my dorm much more than usual pretending to study and not taking pictures. I've got a really interesting 36 Hours type shoot planned for this weekend/next week promoting Iowa City and it's college town nightlife. Stay tuned for what will hopefully be a busy and productive fall season.

In other news, I'm also trying to make little improvements to the site such as the new dynamic layout, which is user switchable. Major props to the Blogger team for their work. I'm also going to work on tagging posts for optimal searching and organization with major categories like photoshoots, bts, and monologues for posts like these.

I leave you with a lovely time-lapse of the fantastic weather we had earlier this evening:

Run Nikki, Run! - A Photoshoot for a Cause

Hey everyone, I just finished an initial edit for a shoot I had this evening with my friend Nicole. To raise money for our university's annual Dance Marathon for children with cancer, she started a tumblr blog encouraging visitors to match her footsteps running with donations. Check it out at this link and consider helping out a great cause. You can find more information at the official Dance Marathon website here.
