MMS: Making Chocolates

Last Monday all the chocolate lovers gathered at Sokoladas café/store in Pilies. The Chocolate Master himself was waiting for us to share his magic chocolate-making secrets. The evening started with tasting some Belgium chocolates and a lecture on the quality of marzipan and the importance of the right technique to create the best chocolates. All the ladies got dressed into special “uniforms” and watched the Master in action. The presentation included making molded chocolates with rum filling and decorating chocolate covered Florentines. After that we had a chance to try our hands at making and decorating chocolates – black, white, milk chocolate, marzipan, nuts and Florentines at our disposal. To add some excitement to the process, the Master promised prizes to the 2 winning chocolate designs. Congratulations to Jurgita and Erin! Enough said – please enjoy the photos!

Christmas Party at Musu Nameliai

Dear Ladies,

I would first of all like to say a huge thank you to those ladies, children and a husband who came along yesterday to help make the party special for those children at Musu Namelai. Saying that I think you will agree with me that we all got out of that visit as much, if not more, than we put in.

That mouse was brilliant and even though we could not understand some of what was said, I really don't think that we needed to. He was hilarious. I was sat behind Avery and she was thoroughly enjoying the Musu Namelai version of Red Riding Hood. Red Riding Hood on a motor bike was new!

But also there was a lady sat between Irina and myself telling the background to some of the children. One little boy around 8 or 9 whose parents did not want to know him so his 19 year old sister had taken on the responsibility of looking after him. One boy ( the wolf ) who lived in four rooms shared by 15 people, the adults were alcoholics. We looked at the children and they seemed and acted so happy but the homes that they go back to are dire.

I AM SO GLAD THAT I WENT ALONG. THE IMAGES WILL STAY WITH ME FOR A LONG TIME.

Victoria Diaz - Marketing Manager, and Julija Janus - fashion designer, joined us with tips, photos and lots of information on what to buy and what not to buy in fashion. International Christmas Charity Bazaar: Preliminary Results and Photos

We are delighted to announce preliminary results of ICCB 2011:

300,000 Litas in cash donations were collected in the name of the Christmas Bazaar this year!

- 90,000 Litas were collected in cash donations from sponsors before the event.
- 210,000 Litas in cash were collected by the stands representing international community and institutions.

This year we formed a partnership with friends in Kaunas, who will organize an event on December 27th in cooperation with the municipality of Kaunas to collect money for the hospital.

The final results of the 9th International Christmas Charity Bazaar will be announced on December 31st and will include the result of efforts in Vilnius and Kaunas.

"On Monday evening we held our Monthly Members Social at Burbulis Vynine on Rudininku.

For those of you who could not attend for various reasons you missed a great time. I thanked Vaidotas twice but was told more wine was coming. There was more than one lady who left his vynine at around 9.30, a little bit - as the English would say - three sheets to the wind. ( It is an old sailing maxim ) It means slightly intoxicated.

It was a really great evening in every way and I would like to thank Diana Zarembiene for initially arranging it and to Vaidotas and his staff for making the event memorable . ( some of us will be able to remember it anyway )"

International Christmas Charity Bazaar: Baking For the Cause!

Dear Ladies, we all have a chance to contribute to ICCB cause by providing some home-made delicious goodies for the Bake Sale at the ICCB Food Court.

Have you already decided what you are going to make? Many of our members have a talent in baking! So I am sure this year just as always the bake sale stand will be overflowing with all sorts of Christmas treats and will raise some good money.

Don’t forget to send in the details of your dish to Food Court Coordinator Jurgita Januseviciene (jurgute12 at yahoo dot com) by 25th November. You have to provide the following information:

Dear all, intense preparations for International Christmas Charity Bazaar are underway. Soon, hopefully, I will be able to share some photos of what is coming up in the “ICCB 2011 Sneak Peek” post! Monthly Social at Konplott Jewellery Store: Photos

Member social event hosted by Konplott jewellery store Monday evening 17 October was a big success!!!

We had 15 attendees, among them four guests and a cute female pooddle, Melute, which made us 16, then! The atmosphere with deemed candle-like lighting bringing out sparkles in jewellery, soft background music was elegant but at the same time relaxed and warm!
Ladies seemed to enjoy their time at Konplott and many ladies used the opportunity to buy beautiful Konplott jewellery. Trying on earings and necklaces and advising each other was much fun. Some of us even bought two pieces each! At the same time, there was a lot of chatting and everyone enjoyed delicious wine and snacks that Asta, director of Vilnius Konplott, and staff had prepared for this event. We also enjoyed Asta's presentation on the designer, Miranda Konstantinidou, and her creations. Many thanks to Benita for translating.

On behalf of IWAV members we would like to express our gratitude for organizing this amazing event to Asta Brusokaite, director of Konplott Vilnius, and her team Gintare and Auste, who were very helpful and great hostesses! Asta is kindly offering 5% from jewellery sold to IWAV members at the event and during the whole following week (till October 24) to Christmas Charity Bazaar.

Underground Tour of Vilnius: Photos

September 3, sixteen of us enjoyed the underground tour of Vilnius which lasted 3 3/4 hours. We visited lots of cellars which most of did not know about. Apparently there are tunnels and passageways beneath the streets of Vilnius but when shops, apartments etc changed hands then ownership went below the streets and so the streets below what we can see have been sealed off by the owners. There are tunnels which run from Vilnius to Trakai and Kernave but they are not in good condition and you would need wellies and hard hats. I think we were told that there are 26 kms of tunnels beneath Vilnius and at one time you could walk anywhere using them. We were also told that the Town Hall used to be a prison and the executioners were sent to 'Executioner School' in Munich!!!! Heady stuff this!!

Breast Cancer Walk: Photos

On 11 September a team of IWAV ladies participated in a Walk Against Breast Cancer organized within the frameworks of Vilnius Mini Marathon. The aim of the event was to raise awareness of breast cancer and raise funds. Part of the participation fee will be donated to Avon Breast Cancer Foundation

We were blessed with beautiful sunny weather on that day which made the whole experience even more joyful. The atmosphere at the starting line was electric and very exciting. After cheering for parents with strollers and for marathoners who had been running since early morning a crowd of mini-marathon participants got ready to race. Pink balloons were handed out to be released at the sound of the start gun shot which made for a pretty scene. Some of us did a bit of jogging mixed with walking which proved to be a great exercise. I think everyone liked this experience and there was talking about participating next year and maybe doing even more of that running or jogging.

New Events and Some Photos

September is an exciting and busy month here at IWAV! First of all the beginning of autumn is like an opening season for international community for socializing, attending various events and activities. In addition to the excitement of everyone returning back to Vilnius from holidays :-D there are really many new things going on in IWAV: coffee morning with a lot of new members in attendance, new weekly event CAC (which stands for cake and coffee), cocktails at Radisson (an evening not to be missed), trip to Kaliningrad, playgroup resuming its activity, lunch bunches at new restaurants, and finally sushi-making social! It seems life cannot be more busy and fun!!

Of course, I am looking forward to all of the upcoming events and especially to the sushi-making class! Cooking events are one of my favorite IWAV activities. For example cooking with Lidija Rasutis - a famous Lithuanian cook who has her own TV cooking program was an amazing event. Recently 2 more cooking sessions were organized for IWAV members. One of them was a baking weekend at Toni's and Cia's professional bakery facilities. I take the chance to post the belated photos below!

The other event was organized by a talented passionate cook Sigrid who has a beautiful and very inspiring blog. Check it out here www.sigridsbeste.de ! I hope to get some photos from that event soon as well!

Unfortunately I have never had a chance for one reason or another to participate in such an event yet. But I am planning to attend the sushi-making class- I absolutely love sushi! Promise to post photos!

Blossom of Hope: Handover of Biopsy Needles

On 20th June Mike and I visited Kaunas hospital and met up with Ruta from Roche to deliver a plaque and the biopsy needles. Kaunas University hospital has now merged with the Veterinarian hospital and they seem very happy about it. It was great to see all the Doctors again and to hear that they are so much more positive about the future.

On the 1st July we visited Klaipeda hospital and took our friends with us. There we met up with Odeta from Roche and again met our friends the doctors. The news was again more positive but Klaipeda does not seem to get as much assistance from the government as Kaunas or Vilnius. What we did learn from all the hospitals was that the government will only pay for a consultation not the biopsy needles. The patient either has to pay herself or, in some cases, the hospital will make the purchase. Needless to say, this means that the biopsy needles and machines that we provide are extremely important.

We then spent the next few days visiting Palanga and Nida and Juodkranta.

On the 8th July we visited Siauliai hospital and met up with Rima from Roche. Irina our charity co-ordinator, who was the driving force behind our Blossom of Hope event, also came with us. This was a first time visit to this hospital and it was great. They knew nothing about us or our organisation and wanted to know everything so it turned into a long visit.

Charity Visits: Women's Shelter, Infants Orphanage and Kids Care Home

One of the most important parts (if not the most important) to IWAV is its charity work. Thanks to our members we have helped and keep supporting those in need. There have been so many charity projects, I cannot keep up posting reports and photos. At the end of May, thanks to donations from IWAV members, several deliveries of clothes and other items to a shelter and orphanages have been organized by IWAV charity coordinator Irina Tuminiene.

First visit that day was to Shelter for Women and Kids (Vilniaus miesto motinos ir vaiko pensionas) IWAV tries to regularly provide support to the women and kids living at the shelter. IWAV charity coordinator Irina Tuminiene delivered several bags full of women’s clothes donated by IWAV members and American International School of Vilnius. Later she received a thank you call saying that all the women appreciated this help. This donation not only proved of material help to them but also raised their spirits.

Keti Tsami and I joined Irina and her husband Arturas to visit two more locations: Vilnius Infants Orphanage (Vilniaus sutrikusio vystymosi kūdikių namai) and Vilnius Child Care Home (Vilniaus 3-ieji vaikų globos namai)

At Infants Orphanage we visited 2 kids’ living areas. The first one consisted of 2 rooms and was for little disabled kids and the other was one room with something like a play pen in the center for tiny babies. Photos were not allowed. Staff was busy taking care of the little ones. We also saw galleries of photos on the walls showing babies and little kids living at the orphanage and those who were adopted with their new parents. Infants’ Orphanage mostly needs clothes and diapers for babies and especially Aptamil. Thanks to IWAV playgroup members, we were able to deliver such items! In fact, the need for Aptamil is constant, so IWAV hopes to keep supporting Vilniaus sutrikusio vystymosi kūdikių namai further.

In the second location Vilnius Child Care Home we brought clothes for kids and the staff. We visited many rooms (“groups”) and met a lot of kids of various ages.

We looked around living areas and saw that some of the rooms obviously need renovation. Hopefully this location could become one of the beneficiaries for the International Christmas Charity Bazaar.

We talked a lot with the staff about kids and their lives at the orphanage and the process of adoption and many other issues. Ladies working with the kids were very warm, kind and friendly. They also did their best to create cozy atmosphere in the rooms. It was dinner time and the tables were laid with plates, cups and bread baskets in the middle.

One of the observations was that the kids were not busy reading or doing some activity together. Mostly they were just standing around or each busy with their own things. But it could be becuase of that special before-dinner-time of the day...

At the last “group” kids were very warm, friendly and open and wanted to talk with us. We were especially touched when they asked for hugs and good-bye kisses. A kind lady taking care of the kids told us that she first visited this orphanage when she was 18 and then she decided to dedicate her life to working with these kids. Children asked us to stay longer and asked if we would come back. Of course- we said! We will come back and visit them! This time we will make sure we have some treats!!

Blossom of Hope: Overview and Photos

This year for the third time IWAV joined forces with its partner Roche to organize an annual fundraising event Blossom of Hope. The goal of the event is to raise funds to purchase biopsy needles for several Lithuanian oncology hospitals. It also aims to raise awareness of breast cancer and of importance of timely diagnosis. Percentage of breast cancer cases diagnosed at late stages is still comparatively high in Lithuania. With Blossom of Hope we try to make a difference!

Thanks to the contribution from the sponsors, donations from artists and to the generous spirit of all the attending guests, this year Blossom of Hope raised over 55 000 LTL. These funds will cover the cost of more than 1300 biopsy needles.

Big thanks to all the sponsors and all the guests who listened, heard and understood the need for help and who contributed by donating or by buying a ticket and attending.

Blossom of Hope: Charity Evening with Dinner and Entertainment

Preparations are underway for a fundraising evening Blossom of Hope organized to raise funds for purchase of biopsy needles for oncology hospitals in Vilnius, Klaipeda and Kaunas.

This event is organized by IWAV in partnership with Roche Lietuva for the thrird year in a row. Patron of the event is a famous ballerina Egle Spokaite. The host is a well known actor and TV host Gintaras Mikalauskas.

Several companies, organizations and well known artists and designers join their efforts to raise money for biopsy needles. Among contributing artists and designers are Raimondas Savickas, Aushra Chlevickaitė, Vytautas Zilius, Saulius Paukstys, Miranda Konstantinidou, Dalia Truskaite, Laura Dailideniene, Ruta Rimseliene, Daina Maslauskaite.

Nice Time and Best Burgers in Vilnius at Boksto Varta!

Last Sunday several IWAV ladies and Vilnius hashers met at a new restaurant in the Old Town called Boksto Varta for a breakfast/brunch and to socialise. Gary and Svetlana Mackay, owners of the restaurant make sure their dishes are made from mostly organic produce! Their chef is Georgian and the food is great according to those who tried it out. If you have not had a chance to join last Sunday, you can come to our monthly social and try out this new restaurant this upcoming Monday 21 March!

As Barbara says: "I have been reliably informed by one of our American members that they serve the 'best burger in Vilnius.'"

The Chain of Kindness

It all started with a 15 year old boy named Marius...

He lives with his Grandmother, brothers and sisters in a small Lithuanian village about 40 kilometers from Vilnius. His family does not have many things… the things we all need for comfortable healthy life. For years Marius has been suffering from tooth decay and painful teeth. He had never seen a dentist in his life. Who knows how Marius’ story would go if one day it did not come into attention of some kind people who cared to help.

It was brought to the attention of Barbara, IWAV chair, that a neighbor’s boy was having serious health issues. Barbara asked her dentist Ieva Day-Stirrat who is also an IWAV member to take a look at the boy. Needless to say Marius’ family cannot cover any dentist expenses. Ieva treated Marius’ front teeth for free. The photos below are shocking but in a good way, because they show the amazing job that Ieva did on Marius’ teeth.

The rest of treatment at the lowest cost possible will cost Marius 1000 LTL. One kind IWAV member has already donated 400 ltl, 600 more litas need to be raised.

Having learnt about Marius’ family through Barbara’s emails several IWAV members volunteered to help his family with clothes, food and toys. But the kindness didn't stop there. Last weekend Barbara’s van full of donated items went from one house to another surprising kids and families with unexpected presents.

Ladies' Night at California Tapas and Wine

Dear All,

Saturday night social Ladies’ Night Out was so much fun! It took place at California Tapas and Wine restaurant in Didzioji str. We were a gorgeous group of nine ladies clinking glasses of Californian and Spanish wines and having some very delicious tapas. Conversation ran around IWAV socials, wine and whiskey tasting, food in Vilnius restaurants and organizing the upcoming fundraiser.

One of the memorable moments of the evening was learning how to “eat” king prawns’ heads. Thank you, our teachers Caroline and Alice! This was a very unusual and a new experience for me and, I assume, for our chair Barbara as well. I think it took me more courage though than her. However, the head I got was absolutely empty… either I (and everyone else) got lucky, or it’s the way prawns’ heads are… I have to say, I was kind of disappointed and relieved at the same time. At some point a charming gentleman joined our ladies' party. I have to say he was so cute! Unfortunately his stay was very brief and he left quite soon with one of the ladies. I think he stole her heart! :-) Are you wondering? See the photos below!
