Guess I have been too busy riding the range and doing other cowboy things like horse wrangling, lassoing and jingling my spurs...or perhaps maybe a little too much time in the Long Branch....

Remember "The Long Branch" it was the saloon on the old television show, Gunsmoke, starring James Arness as United States Marshall Matt Dillon. His girlfriend, Miss Kitty ran the Long Branch, she kept it a pretty wholesome place considering it was a saloon....but after all, her boyfriend was the local lawman and held the folks to a pretty high standard.

Marshall Dillon and his deputy, Festus, kept the law in the western town of Dodge City in Kansas, and the surrounding environs. Matt was a no nonsense guy, the kind of guy you'd want in your corner when the outlaws surrounded the stage coach and threatened the women folk......and of course if you caught a stray bullet in the melee, the Doc was always close by to patch up the holes.

Matt Dillon, at least as portrayed by James Arness was a big fella, well over six foot tall, (six foot seven inches to be exact) and ruggedly handsome, with a nice smile when needed and a serious stare when he was face to face with a bad guy in the middle of main street. That's how the show used to open, with Matt winning the draw against an obvious bad guy, ensuring the townsfolk were safe yet again from the villans of the old west. As I recall, Matt wore the same clothes, same shirt, same pants, vest and hat in every show, never seemed to change his clothes, unless it was winter, then he would slip on a nice trail coat or a special occasion in which he wore a western suit. Actually, his clothes did differ slightly I guess, but typically it was tan jeans, a tanned vest, and a

Gunsmoke the television show ran from 1955 - 1975, the longest running western, and I think the longest running television drama to date. (There actually was a radio show of Gunsmoke from 1952-1961) The television show ran so long because of it's characters and their interactions with each other and with outsiders to Dodge City. There were often entire shows with no "action" of the kind we typically expect from westerns, no shooting, no fist fighting, instead focusing on interpersonal relationships, and how small town Kansas folks interacted with outside folks and other influences.

As a kid, particularly in the later years of the show, I missed some of the nuances of the interpersonal stuff, and often figured the show wasn't very good because there wasn't any shoot-em-up action. That was only because I didn't understand what was going on, or better said, didn't appreciate the depth of the show. It was, after all, an adult television show for all intents and purposes. Gunsmoke was about social issues, of the day, which were the 1890's and even of the later day, the 1960's and 70's. Sometimes that was apparent, sometimes not so much.

The list of stars and guest stars on Gunsmoke reads like a who's-who list of big name Hollywood, there are not too many stars who didn't at one point or another turn up on an episode.

Some of the show's regular co-stars went on to big stuff on their own in later years, Dennis Weaver, Burt Reynolds, for example. Others, such as William Shatner, Sam Elliott, Edward Asner, Harrison Ford, John Drew Barrymore, Victor French, Ed Begley, Alan Hale, Jr., Dan Blocker, Melissa Gilbert, Bruce Boxleitner, DeForest Kelley,Angie Dickinson, Ted Knight, Richard Dreyfuss, Ricardo Montalbán, Buddy Ebsen, Harry Morgan, Barbara Eden, Jodie Foster, Ron Howard, Earl Holliman, Dennis Hopper, Jack Klugman, Martin Landau Leslie Nielsen, Slim Pickens, Suzanne Pleshette, Denver Pyle,Tom Skerritt, Forest Tucker, Robert Urich, Robert Vaughn, Jan-Michael Vincent, Adam West, Denver Pyle....and more, lot's more.

Remember, many of the shows revolved around someone or something being 'introduced' so to speak to the folks of Dodge City, and then the impact on those folks. Therefore, new actors were needed on a weekly basis to play the roles of the newcomers.
I think I can thank Gunsmoke for my love of country western stuff and in particular, cowboy hats and cowboy boots. When I was a little tyke, I was always pretending I was Marshall Dillon of Dodge, keeping the peace in my own little town, which, unfortunately wasn't anywhere near Kansas.....
Jessica Simpson's shoe fashions also include cowboy boots, something very near and dear to me considering my fascination with cowboys and cowgirls and western wear.

This Silverado Rattler cowboy hat is made from crusable wool, it features a 3 1/2" brim and has a studded band around the crown. You'll love not only being comfortable, but also looking great!. Available Colors: Black Wool, Serpent Wool.

In fact, this cowboy with is horse is a favorite of mine for sure. I love the realism, the look and feel of the piece. The artist took pains to get the details right, and it shows. This is made of stone resin with a felt bottom. This cowboy and his horse would look great on your coffee table.
We're heading for the railhead at Abilene! Those were the words a cowboy would hear when the time came to take their ranch's cattle to market. Prior to railway lines, cattle were raised on ranches, many a long distance from the major urban areas where the meat processing plants were located. That meant that cattle had to be moved from the ranch and grazing areas and herded to their 'final destination'

Cattle drives have long had a rather romantic notion, in part because of western movies, and the idea of the cowboys riding the range, gathering up the cattle and leading them on their journey to market. Cattle drives made for great 'epic' movies where the heros had to fight against all odds to get the cattle safely to their destination. In the movies that meant everything from fighting off outlaw rustlers trying to steal the cattle, to roving bands of renegade native indians, to grizzly bears, rattlesnakes, floods, tornadoe and Lord only knows what else. Even in real life, it 'wern't no picnic'

But the truth is that cattle drives actually were a rather short lived cowboy lifestyle. Thing was, prior to 1895, there wasn't really anywhere to take them, a lot of farmers and settlers had a few cows of their own so demand for beef wasn't high. Even in the East, where there were more people, many of them had their own cattle or at least animals they killed for meat, so demand for beef wasn't high. It wasn't until the Armour and Company meat packing plant opened in Chicago at the end of the Civil War that the demand for beef increased. Now beef was being processed and sold across the country, and the larger cities and towns, where people no longer had the luxury of keeping cattle and sheep, needed meat. That led to price increases for beef, making it worthwhile to drive the cattle to market, even from long distances away.

So the cowboys had to mount up and start driving their cattle to...you guessed it, "the railhead" which of course was where the railway ended. One of the first drives involved ranchers from Texas working together to drive their herds from Texas to Chicago in 1866. They ran into some difficulty in Kansas, which of course has been the plot behind many different western movies when farmers got pissed with the ranchers driving their cows across farm lands trampling crops, the farmers and locals also worried that the cattle would spread cow sickness to their own animals. In fact, the farmers, always a kind of independent lot, formed groups to harass and threaten to shoot the ranchers and cowboys. That little hiccup ended the first cattle drive and the cows ended up getting sold for less than the going price.

A year or so later and 'cow towns' started springing up, many of them imortalized in western movies, places with names like Abilene and Dodge City, which were towns located at the railhead. These places became the destinations for cattle drives, and took routes which often avoided the testy farmers and their farmland. One of the routes, from Texas to Abilene, became known as the Chisholm Trail, which ran through Oklahoma, then called "Indian Territory" It's all coming together for you now isn't it? It is for me. These are the places Louis L'Amour often wrote about in his western novels. Places where cowboys met, towns that grew and prospered because the railway ended on their doorstep.

Dog tired, dirty, dusty worn out cowboys would hit the town ready to party, and the first place they would head would be the saloon for a drink and some feminine company! Don't forget, these cowboys had been on the trail for weeks, sometimes months, depending on where they were coming from. They couldn't move the cattle fast, because they would lose too much weight. Usually a distance of about 15 miles a day was the most they would travel. The cowboys worked in shifts, more or less, because the cows needed watching 24 hours a day. A big herd of cattle, numbering over a thousand head, would need about 10 cowboys, plus a cook and someone to look after the horses, the horse wrangler. By the time these guys got to Dodge, or Abilene, or anywhere else for that matter, they needed to let off some steam! After all, they had been working hard for their money, which by the way, was around $1.00 a day.....plus meals....no wonder so many cowboys today become country music singers.....

These days cattle drives don't happen, at least not in the same way they used too. For one thing, the trains go all the way out west and back, there are tractor trailers that carry the cattle to market. Sure there might be the odd cattle drive, but mostly they are really 'round-ups' to gather up cattle that have been roaming the range, and get them ready in one place to be shipped off to the 'processing' plants. There are also some all inclusive vacation "cattle drives" designed to give neophite wanna be cowboys a chance to experience life as a cowboy, on a cattle drive. People pay for the adventure of going on a cattle drive for vacation, even families go, as it can be an exhirarating experience. One of them operates out of Montana, called the Montana Cattle Drive another, operating out of New Mexico is the Burnt Well Ranch Cattle Drive and Utah has the Rocking Bar A Ranch Cattle Drive There are more, some billed as "dude ranch" and others are real working cattle ranches that take guests on cattle drives to supplement their incomes. For some, it is their income.

So there ya go, a cattle drive and you can still experience the excitment of herding cattle over the trail yourself, what more could you ask for? Giddy-Up!

I Want To Be A Cowboy

So...you wanna be a cowboy....or you want to be a cowgirl....you are going to need some western apparel, some western clothes, and of course they have to be authentic cowboy wear, true to the hard living, rugged, outdoorsy types that are cowboys and cowgirls living the cowboy life on a ranch, riding the range, mending fences, branding cattle, roping and riding and ending the day under the stars listening to the coyotes howl....

Well that all sounds pretty darn romantic, who hasn't dreamed of going on a cattle drive, riding the range, trotting a horse across a mesa in New Mexico or Arizona, watching the sun go down over a western horizon? All of us have of course, especially those of us who have grown up reading Louis L'amour books, we all want to be the cowboy hero of his novels.

The first thing you are going to need is a hat. You cannot, absolutely cannot be a cowboy without an authentic cowboy hat! Sure those straw cowboy hats are great for a night in the cowboy bar, riding the mechanical bull, but for a real cowboy, you need a felt cowboy hat like this Stetson 4X Rancher Western Hat

Of course once you have a good cowboy hat, you need a good cowboy shirt, like this Walls Mens Western Wear 100% Cotton Twill Snap Long Sleeved Shirt

Of course, a western shirt like this one needs to be matched to a great pair of George Strait by Wrangler Men's Cowboy Cut Jeans which are about the finest cowboy cut jeans you can wear. And once you have your cowboy jeans, you need a cowboy belt to hold them up! One like this Men's Badlands Inlay Horsehair Leather Belt Not quite as flashy as the COWBOY Metal Belt Buckle that Can Swivel to Read "Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy" but quite nice just the same, and very western!

So...you have your cowboy hat, cowboy shirt, cowboy jeans and cowboy belt....what's missing? Well of course you cannot be a cowboy without a great pair of leather cowboy boots! These are really an individual choice, but I personally am very fond of these 1883 by Lucchese Men's N8641 5/4 Western Boots

These are handsome, rugged looking western boots, the kind of boots that you can wear on your horse, driving your truck, or kicking up your heels in the saloon at night! Featuring intricate embroidery, and handmade all-leather construction and a padded insole so your feet won't get tired after a day of riding the range or a night of dancing.

Now let's see...what are we missing, got our boots...oh yes, Cowboy Cross Show Spurs

No real cowboy is complete without a decent pair of Leather High Noon Chaps to protect his legs and pants when he is working with the cattle or riding the brushy range looking for stray cows.

You are now getting pretty well cowboy outfitted...but there's more! You need a Lariat for lassoing cows and broncs!
So...you've come this far....now you gotta push it all the way home. What kind of a cowboy doesn't own a saddle, but not just any saddle, you are a cowboy, you need a real cowboy authentic leather and inlaid
Custom Bowman Saddle with 15.5" Inlaid Cushion Seat

Anyway, long story, but all I really wanted to do was mention a post I had come across on a fashion blog, Fibers.com, they have a cool little post about dressing like a cowgirl, check it out How To Dress Like A Cowgirl

Cowgirl Style Sexy

You know what that means, it's time to come in from mending fences and head to your favorite country bar for a wild night of dancing and bull riding! And of course, if you are going to do that, you want to be a sexy cowgirl when you push open the wing doors on the bar and mosey on up to the bar......I don't think there will be a dry eye in the saloon when you strutt your stuff to the dance floor in this fabulous relaxed fitting halter top & black chaps!

The halter top has rear ties with front buckles for added adjustability and a sexy bikini bottom is included for ass slapping appeal. This women's sexy cowgirl outfit is made from acrylic & spandex material to guarantee a very comfortable fit.

Be warned, this is very sexy, and in short supply so if you want one, better order quickly, Order Here! and get ready to ride the bronc, the range, or whatever comes up! *wink*

I Want To Be A Cowboy

Ya know....I really shoulda thought it through a little bit more before I chose "I Wanna Be A Cowboy" for the name of this blog. Little did I realize that there was a band called I Wanna Be A Cowboy, and a song called "I wanna be a cowboy's sweetheart" and so on. When you search the phrase, I don't show up for something like 12 pages in google because of all the lyrics to I wanna be a cowboys sweetheart, and videos about I wanna be a cowboy and so on....it is apparently quite a popular search, unfortunately folks are looking for the song lyrics when they search I wanna be a cowboy. Oh dammit.....

So I guess the only thing I can do is suck it up cowboy and keep posting and hopefully pull in my readers from other terms, keywords and phrases. In the meantime, I can also post a link to the words and chords to the song by Patsy Montanna, Cowboy's Sweetheart

"I want to be a cowboys sweetheart,
I want to learn to rope and ride....."

It's actually a great song, it's been around since 1935! Written by Rubye Blevins, who performed under the cowboy / western sounding name, Patsy Montana. Since then it's been sung by the legendary cowgirl of all, Dale Evans, wife of Roy Rogers, LeAnn Rimes, The Dixie Chicks, Suzy Bogguss, Lynn Anderson and others. According to Wilkipedia it was the first country song sung by a female to sell over a million copies. (Patsy Montana)

Hmmm....now Dale Evans....there was a cowgirl!

Lucchese Charlie 1 Horse Women's Cowgirl Clogs

Wanna be a sexy cowgirl but don't really need a pair of cowboy boots because...well let's face it, you are allergic to horses and you never ever step foot in a corral or a barn? Sure, that's OK because as I have said here many times, being a cowboy (or cowgirl) is really just a state of mind. It's that cowboy code of honor, and the idea of freedom under open skies, and knowing how to party when the sun goes down. It's knowing how to treat a friend and what the word "loyalty" means. It's also about knowing something about riding the mechanical bull in your favorite country western bar on Saturday night.

But.....it's also about fashion, specifically western wear fashion and cowboy style, which is what you will have with a pair of these ultra chic LUCCHESE Charlie 1 Horse I6060 Womens Cowboy Cowgirl Clogs These slip on sexy shoes feature a pointed western toe and cowgirl motif, perfect for the cowgirl in all of us! And they would be right....most of the time. There is no doubt, the traditional western boot looks like the one I just described. But there are other western boots, ones that are worn by cowboys more than you might realize. They are boots like these Men's Tony Lama TLX 8" Durable Flexible Casual Lace-Up Western Work Boots These boots are worn for work, 8 inches tall, waterproof with a steel toe and laces....yes, laces for a secure fit.

These boots would likely be called 'roper boots' by cowboys, or 'lace up roper boots' These are made for roping, and in particular rodeos and roping compeitions where the cowboy (or cowgirl) has to quickly run to the cow to tie it up after roping it. The laceup design is popular because it keeps the boots from falling off too easily and makes running easier while offering more ankle support. Ironically, the same thing that makes these boots safer in some respects, makes them dangerous in others, they are easier to get caught in a stirrup because of the shape and the lacings, and the lack of a smooth upper. The last thing a cowboy wants, whether in the rodeo arena or out on the range, is foot to become hung up in a stirrup. However, among some cowboys, these are very popular boots. Also good for working around the ranch, whether branding cattle, mending fences, working on the barn or driving the tractor. Don't forget, for many cowboys the 4-wheeler ATV has replaced the horse for a lot of purposes, so these are probably good boots for driving the all terrain vehicles too.
This is a cowboy boot for the discriminating cowboy, and probably not a boot that a real cowboy would wear on the range or branding cows. Nope...these are the boots he would save for the weekend, for the trip to the nightclub, or for when his country western band takes to the stage to entertain the cowgirls.

Tony Lama western boot is a fine high quality boot that has been made in America since 1911, and continues to this day, making some of the finest boots money can buy, like these Men's Tony Lama 13" Comfort Caiman Pull On Western Boots
A cowboy boot, more than any other western wear or western clothing, says, "I am a cowboy" even if being a cowboy is only a state of mind. Sure, a cowboy hat qualifies as country western wear, perhaps even moreso than a cowboy boot, but not everyone is comfortable in a cowboy hat.

However....everyone is comfortable wearing a tony lama western boot. Tony Lama has been making cowboy boots as long as there have been cowboys. The name is synonomous with high quality, real cowboy boots. There is a reason for that reputation, it's because of western boots like these Men's Tony Lama 13" Smooth Ostrich Pull On Western Boots These fine boots feature a peanut brittle color, a 4-piece smooth ostrich foot and a high matching top with a medium round toe and a 1 5/8 Inch "4" combination heel. Inside, you will find a cushion comfort insole, outside, and authentic leather outsole.
And Brooks are Dunn are Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn two singer-songwriters who debuted in 1991 and haven't stopped since. The duo has had more than fifty singles on the country music charts, twenty of which have reached number one.

The sad news is that Brooks and Dunn are calling it quits in 2010 after their last tour, called The Last Rodeo Tour, the dates of which will be announced.

According to a release on their website, the duo haven't broken up badly, they just think it's time. In their own words:
"After 20 years of making music and riding this trail together, we have agreed as a duo that it's time to call it a day. This ride has been everything and more than we could ever have dreamed .... We owe it all to you, the fans. If you hear rumors, don't believe them, it's just time."
