The question drew some terrific responses from IABC members (see the replies below the fold).
I’m sure it won’t be a popular choice, but this month’s Tiger Woods debacle is a near-perfect example of how not to handle a scandal. Instead of being proactive and visibly contrite (ie. face time on television or a video-taped message on his blog), the world’s biggest sports brand has decided to hide and stay almost silent regarding the gigantic mess he has perpetrated on his family, fans and an entire sport.

I believe had he come forth at the beginning, instead of creating a vacuum where speculation and rumour could grow and fester, he may have kept something of a career to salvage. I don’t believe that is the case now. His sponsors are dropping him left, right and centre; and his fans continue to be amazed by his complete disregard for anyone but himself.

It is not about what he did, but how he has chosen not to address the public. The public that made him the first billionaire athlete, that fueled his many endorsements, and showed up time and time again to cheer on the greatest golfer of our time.

It will be interesting to see how this situation develops and to see what happens to the Tiger brand in one, three and five years.
