IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano addressed the Fukushima Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Safety, held from 15 to 17 December 2012 in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. The Conference, organized by Japan in co-sponsorship with the IAEA, contributes to strengthening nuclear safety worldwide by providing an opportunity to share with the international community, at the ministerial and expert levels, further knowledge and lessons learned from the accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and to further enhance transparency.

In his statement, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano urged nuclear regulators to address “an important area of unfinished business in nuclear security” by ratifying the Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials to better protect nuclear material, as well to protect nuclear facilities against acts of sabotage.
