The fourth installment in Warner Bros.' "Best of Smooth Jazz" series lives up to its "For Lovers" subtitle, offering up some of the most romantic ballads in the label's catalog.
kd lang crooning the standard "Skylark" over a full orchestra is sheer bliss, ditto for Al Jarreau's timeless pop/soul ballad "After All." The sultry rhythms of Bossa Nova shine on George Benson's chestnut "This Masquerade" and Michael Franks' exquisite "Hourglass," while soul reigns supreme on George Duke's "No Rhyme, No Reason." We're also treated to two superior moments from Fourplay: first Phil Collins sits in on his own composition, the hypnotic "Why Can't it Wait Till Morning" (here presented in a slick radio remix); then Chaka Khan lends her one-of-a-kind pipes to a slow-burn reading of the Isley Brothers hit "Between the Sheets."
The only possible grievance is length: only forty-eight minutes and eleven tracks long, the set feels a little short. Still, with the likes of George Benson, David Sanborn, and Boney James rounding out the album, you can't really argue with quality over quantity : By John Jones

Take 6 gives an irresistible reading of "Deepest Part of Me," Al Jarreau croons sweetly over a backdrop by Bob James and David Sanborn on the jazz standard "Since I Fell for You," and Randy Crawford masterfully transforms Journey's "Who's Crying Now" into a jazz/soul classic.
Furthermore Michael McDonald gives Carole King's "Hey Girl" a new lease on life, Mark Whitfield serves up a smooth instrumental reading of Stevie Wonder's "That Girl" and we're treated to Fourplay's excellent take on Marvin Gaye's "After the Dance," featuring a top-notch vocal by El DeBarge. Best of Smooth Jazz 1, some of the greatest smooth jazz compilations to date.

The albums of the "Best of Smooth Jazz" series are arguably some of the greatest smooth jazz compilations to date. This particular album is of coure the forerunner, and daresay, the best of the immaculate series.

My favorite cut off the album would have to be Bob James' "Angela" (theme from "Taxi"). This classic is worth that price of admission alone as it offers so much more then just the 30 seconds it is alloted per episode of said show. Al Jarreau's "We're In This Love Together" is a tune that many will recognize as it has been a frequent staple in most pop radio stations across the country. Pure greatness! There is so much more to say, but I am sure everyone gets the point by now.

Best Of Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong

Ella Fitzgerald's voice was satin to Louis Armstrong's sandpaper, but when you put them together on a single song, their chemistry was unimpeachable. This disc selects highlights from the three albums they made together at Verve (including their Porgy and Bess), and adds a spiffy live track from the Hollywood Bowl. Though they don't harmonize much (Armstrong's voice wasn't built for harmony), Ella's dignified swing and flashes of teasing wit play off Satchmo's gritty, good-humored roar symbiotically. The material is mostly lightweight Tin Pan Alley stuff (lots of Gershwin, plus the likes of "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm"), and they fly it like a kite. --Douglas Wolk

Jazz is a musical tradition and style of music that originated at the beginning of the 20th century in Afican Amercan communities in the Southern United States from a confluence of African and European music traditions.
From its early development until the present, jazz has incorporated music from 19th and 20th century American popular music Its West African pedigree is evident in its use of Blue notes, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation, and the swung note.
From its beginnings in the early 20th century jazz has spawned a variety of subgenres: New Orleans Dixieland dating from the early 1910s, big band style swing from the 1930s and 1940s, bebop from the mid-1940s, a variety of Latin jazz fusions such as Afro-Cuban and Brazilian Jazz, Free Jazz from the 1950s and 1960s, Jazz Fusion from the 1970s, Acid Jazz from the 1980s (which added Funk and Hip-Hop influences), and Nujazz in the 1990s. As the music has spread around the world it has drawn on local national and regional musical cultures, its aesthetics being adapted to its varied environments and giving rise to many distinctive styles.

Louis Armstrong

Was born in 1900 and died in 1971. He was well-known for playing 2nd cornet in King Oliver band on early recordings from 1923. However, he left the band in 1924. His music from this time is traditional New Orleans style, polyphonic, emotional and denotative. Louis Armstrong soon became a soloist at the time he performed with the band of Flecher Henderson. He finished recording "Hot Five" and "Hot Seven" in 1952 and shifted from the cornet to the trumpet. His music style was very unusual, building solos to the highest point and holding very bright clarity and shakes and vibrato. Louis Armstrong was an excellent musician of his time.

Chuck Mangione

Who was a composer and flugelhorn player in Latin Jazz of 70s, created several songs and was highly admired. He was given several awards for songs such as "Hill where The Lord Hides", "Children of Sanchez". And "Bellavia". Morever, Chuck Mangione performed Jazz with Art Blakely and The Jazz Messengers during his career in jazz

Freddie Hubbard

Who played the trumpet, was a famous musician of pop jazz. He began his career in Indianapolis and moved to New York to replace Lee Morgan in The Jazz Messengers, The Jazz Messengers. Although he began as a bop player, turned into one of the dominating influential trumpet players of today and is well-known as a very creative and artistic ability player. The widely known albums that he recorded were "Ole" and "Red Clay".

Charlie Parker

A saxophone player, was born on 29th August 1920, in Kansas When he was growing up as a jazz man at the the 1930s, swing was at the peak of jazz. popularity. During the 1940s and 1950s, he created and established the bebop from of modern jazz, which is till a common style used today. His new style of music featured complex. Melodies, harmonies, rhythms, and tempos spotlighted sections that focused on intense ad-lib playing. Therefore, his intense performances with incredible rhythm amazed the crowd. It is often said that no one has ever matched his outstanding solo skills. Moreover, his extreme performances on stage were the direct reflection of his addiction to drugs. His addictions eventually led to his death on March 12th, 1995 at the young age of 34.
