Music majors are not the only ones at Tufts hitting the good notes. The music culture on campus is rich and often transcends academic backgrounds, says Emma Scudder, A14, who is bringing that music to a wider audience along with her friend Ian MacLellan, A12.

“I spent my first year feeling like there were not many others who shared my musical interests,” says Scudder, an American studies major and folk singer/songwriter in the brother-sister duo The Omaha Folk. “When I really took the time to uncover it, I found that there is actually a huge music scene on campus, and Ian and I wanted to be able to share it.”

And so began the Sunset Sessions, a series of videos showcasing acoustic music by students. MacLellan, a geological sciences major and member of the Institute for Global Leadership’s Exposure program, is the producer.

This first set is a series of promotional photos for the brother of my sister-in-law, Nat Angstrom, who is an actor. He’s going to use the photos for acting headshots and other promotional purposes.

This was another great shoot! Lindsey came to me with an idea for a new banner for her blog and needed a photographer who could make it a reality. I had never done a shoot quite like this, but it went really well. The photos that ended up in the banner aren’t necessarily the best moments, but they are what worked best for a banner. If the height of the banner looks familiar… it’s because I had her hold my MacBook Pro as the stand in.

I made my first stop motion animation. I was crossing my fingers and hoping that it would be a YouTube sensation, but I was wrong! It’s still pretty cute.

A journey off to Wal-Mart and Maine in order to shoot love arrows for our girlfriends for Valentine’s Day! It’s missing fireworks, but has more than enough swords and hunting bows.

All Is Love by Karen O & The Kids

Emma and I decided to create a new recipe. I really like rocks so I decided the recipe needed to have some locally grown, sustainable, and organic rocks. We both like kale and quinoa so decided to stick with that family of sounds and make cups; thus kale quinoa cups are born.

6 washed rocks
1/2 cup onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, pressed
1 tbs. olive oil
1/2 cup quinoa
1 cup vegetable broth
1/3 cup cashews
dash cayenne pepper, salt, and sugar
1/2 cup carrots, chopped into 1/8 inch chunks
1/2 cup summer squash, sliced into thin slices
1 tbs. ginger, diced into very small pieces
6 kale leaves
1 tbs. rice wine vinegar
1 tbs. sesame oil
2 tbs. fresh lime juice

Pre-heat the oven to 325. Cook the onions and garlic with olive oil in a medium sauce pan then add the quinoa and vegetable broth to the mix. Quinoa should take around 20 minutes to cook fully. Roast the cashews lightly, then add the cayenne pepper, salt and sugar. Cut up the toasted nuts and add them to the quinoa. Combine the carrots, summer squash, and ginger in a small frying pan on medium heat, cook for 7 minutes and then add to the quinoa.

Now cut up the kale leaves so that they fit into a bowl shape inside a cupcake pan; this may take some experimentation. Make sure to remove as much of the stalk as possible for taste reasons. Spray the the pan with some oil before putting the leaves in. Fold the leaves in and then add the rocks on top in order to maintain shape. Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes or until the leaves start to get fragile at the tips. While the kale is baking, stir together the lime juice, rice wine, sesame oil, and dash of cayenne pepper; this is your sauce. Remove the rocks and then spoon the quinoa mixture into the kale cups. Pour the lime sauce on top of the cups to taste. Bake in the oven an additional 7-9 minutes. Remove the cups from the pan and then enjoy!

I decided to go to with Sarah to the beach during a snowstorm because she put out the offer, like any good friend would. It was gorgeous.

Adventure 4: Are you cummingtonite?

So I’m a geologist. Geologists really like puns. Ergo summa cumma laude I really like puns. The best geology pun world in the whole universe is the fact that there is a mineral cummingtonite, which leads to the obvious, “Are you cummingtonite???” jokes, ergo I go to Cummington, MA to search for this awesomely named mineral at its birthplace.
