H1N1 - Staying Healthy

Prevention is #1. Here's some tips from Ontario Health.

	Good hand hygiene is the best way to prevent the spread of all flu viruses. Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly and often.

	Keep an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (gel or wipes) handy at work, home and in your car. It needs to be at least 60% alcohol to be effective.

	Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue out. Cough into your upper sleeve if you don't have a tissue.

	Avoid large crowds of people where viruses can spread easily. Stay home when you are sick.

	Keep common surfaces and items clean and disinfected.

I've also heard that drinking warm/hot liquids and gargling with salty and warm water are good. I'm giving my kids hot chocolate once or twice per day. I can't see liquids and gargling hurting.

WOOT! After being rejected twice, I finally got approved. Too happy. Not to mention, I got a lot healthier since my two rejections. Grew an inch at 40 years old, while losing 20 pounts. I think I'm gonna get unhealthier tonight.

Home Depot Scam!

Please tell your male friends, etc. Shopping at Home Depot about this scam! A 'heads up' for those men who may be regular Home Depot customers. This one caught me by surprise.

Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you or your friends! Here's how the scam works:

Two seriously good-looking 20-21 year-old girls come over to your car as you are packing your shopping into the trunk. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex window cleaner, with their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. It is impossible not to look.
When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say 'No' and instead ask You for a ride to McDonald's. You agree and they get into the back seat. On the way, they start undressing. Then one of them climbs over into the front seat and starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals your wallet!

I had my wallet stolen March 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, 24th & 28th. Also April 2nd & 4th, twice on the 8th, 9th, and three times last Saturday and very likely again this upcoming weekend.

So tell your friends to be careful.

The OpenText Screw

OpenText is again up to their old tricks. Buy a company, take over their product and lay-off all their employees with minimal severance and termination pay and no owed vacation pay. This time they acquired Vignette. An employee of Vignette emailed me this morning saying that OpenText is now refusing to pay all the money they promised employees who continued to work for OpenText after the acquisition. These guys are true scum.

I use to work for Hummingbird and they refused to pay me my 2 weeks of owed vacation and termination pay. They did this to many employees. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough money for any one person to bother hiring a lawyer, but together we could've organize something. Most employees were simply too lazy and afraid to stand up to OpenText. I think OpenText knows this.

$0 Health Care Premiums

iM CDNian (Canadian). I pay $0 in health care premiums with a $0 deductible. Since I'm self-employed, I do believe I pay a 1.95% health care payroll tax on my earnings. What do you pay? While in the U.S. lately, I've had this discussion with many Americans. An American friend told me he use to pay $2,000+ monthly for a $0 deductible and a family of 5, but switched to a $1,000+ monthly for a $3,000 annual deductible per person. So, he pays $12,000+ per year and he's only convered after he exceeds the $3,000 deductible (per person). The $0 deductibe for $24,000 per year. Further, there's a usage fee of $20, so it really was a $20 deductible.

When CDNians get sick, they go to the doctor. No questions. Many CDNians who move south of the border, attempt to maintain their CDNian citizenship by living up here for 6 months. Why? The health care. Americans may joke that we have higher taxes, but at least I'm not paying $24,000 per year in health care.

So why do Americans not want the same system? The health care industry is afraid of government intervention. They enroll the Republicans to their cause and spread totally fake propaganda about Obama's health care legislation. If you want to pay $24,000 for health care, then that's your choice. You fool!

I'm amazed how often I come across a person who is doing really neurotic things to keep their life going. Obviously, the US drug industry realized this long ago. Would your pills work just as well if they were placebos (how do you spell that)? Are you defensive when sommeone tells you a simple way of conquering your vice?

Personally, I admit to my vices and work on them. Now I live an awesome life. I'v been on vacation for two-three years and likely work more than 99%. You just have to get over yourself.

Only problem left is dealing with everybody else that hasn't made the same leap.

Harry Potter Sucks

Watched this at the drive-in Thursday night with my family. I had no idea what was going on. My daughter asked me what was going on, she didn't know either. I told her I didn't know. The scenes are all over the place and don't seem to be going anywhere.

Honestly, the only reason we saw Potter is because Ice Age and Transformers were sold out. The double feature wit Potter included The Hangover. My kids fell asleep during Potter (9-12 PM) and woke up and watched all of The Hangover. It's an adult movie with lots of swearing (my kids said) but it's f-ing funny as hell. Can you imagine my 9 an 11 year olds hated Potter and liked The Hangover. Harry Potter an the Hal-Blood Prince really sucks.

DisneyWorld Internet Sucks

The last few days, I've little Internet connectivity as I struggled with modems, COAX cables and WiFi. Unbelievably, this occurred at DisneyWorld, a place where quality is rarely lacking. Not that I wasn't surprised, I always struggle with Internet connectivity at DisneyWorld.

A few years back, Disney added high-speed Internet over their cable TV COAX network at their campgound, Fort Wilderness. We've stayed at the every year, sometimes twice, for the last six. On at least three of those occasions, I've had to called their support for help setting it up.

I have the exact same Linksys network at home, which I've ran for more than 10 years with little trouble. If I'm having repeated problems, then imagine how much trouble the tech un-savvy have.

I called their tech support and they were no help. They said a technician would be out later to check the cable signal. I never saw any technician and they never got back to me.

I checked the Internet connectivity at every chance, fiddled with their COAX and was able to get a connection 4-5 times over 3 days. Never for more than a half hour.

I also stopped by the Crockett's Tavern on the North end of the campground. They supposedly had WiFi. I connected to the signal but couldn't load a page. I asked the bartender and she told me they have WiFi, but that it never works. She told me to try the WiFi at the snack bar near the swimming pool.

The next day, at the swimming pool, I couldn't locate an open signal. The snack bar attendant said she didn't think they had WiFi.

The 3rd day, I tried the WiFi at the registration office. Again, I couldn't locate a signal. The clerk told me they definitely had WiFi. I browsed the room and found a very weak signal at one end of the room.

Even when I was able to connect, the webpages rendered very slowly. Too frustrating for someone use to highspeed. I did the minimal surfing to run my website, but fell far behind on my work.

I'm simply amazed that an organization that prides itself on quality, struggles so much offering Internet at their campgound.

Jacksonville Bridges

If you are driving thru Jacksonville Florida, then you are gonna have to take a long bridge over water. The city must spend the most per capita on bridges of any city in the world. I'm sure the residents are bored with their bridges, but I always like to take a different highway thru the city to enjoy all of their long bidges.

I worked in Jacksonville for a week a few years back. The bad part of all these bridges is that you can't walk (or run) anywhere. You have to drive. The workers use to drive across the street to get their coffee fix. A lack of sidewalks is another contributing factor. This might explain why Jacksonville residents aren't the most fit in the country.

Spectacular Parking

Check out this absolutely spectacular parking job I witnessed on the way down to Daytona. We were parked at a Walmart (wife was shopping) in Tennessee (I think).

This person moved back and forth six times over several minutes before she got it between the lines. Unfortunately, her front end was 3-4 feet out into the driving lane. And she had the help of her two teenaged kids.
