As a result, many are cutting back on gifts, travel and decorations. But here's an idea for a gift that keeps on giving: 12 energy retro-fits that quickly pay for themselves and that will save you money well after the holidays have come and gone.

Use an Incense Stick to Spot Air Leaks
Turn on your home’s exhaust fans (or wait for a windy day) and hold an incense stick near your windows, doors, and electrical outlets. If the smoke blows sideways, you’ve got a leak that should be plugged with weatherstripping, caulk, or expandable foam. The incense trick can slash your energy bills by hundreds each year while chasing away the chills.

Check Furnace Filters
Do it once a month during the heating system to keep your system at peak efficiency. Vacuum and wash reusable filters. And replace disposable filters; new ones cost about $25—much smarter than shivering and paying a pro $200 to $300 if a clogged filter shuts down your heat.

Install a Programmable Thermostat
About 25 million homes now have one—but more than 90 million don’t. That could be costing them big bucks, since programmable thermostats help slice up to 10 percent off your yearly heating bills by automatically turning down temperatures 10 to 15 degrees for 8 hours a day. Consider going for a full 15 degrees when you’re away.

Insulate Hot-Water Heaters and Pipes
Does your water heater feel warm to the touch? Keep more of that heat inside the heater by wrapping it in an insulating blanket—about $20 or less at home centers. You can wrap hot pipes that run from the heater with foam. Also consider lowering your water-heater temperature from 130 degrees to 120 for a total annual savings of roughly $100.

Put in a Low-Flow Showerhead
Water heating alone accounts for nearly 15 percent of your energy bill. Low-flow showerheads can trim your home’s water use by up to 50 percent. Better yet, our sensory experts found many low-flow showerheads that provide a pleasing shower experience while still meeting the toughest, two-gallon-per-minute standard.

Stop Pre-Rinsing Dishes
Our dishwasher tests show that you can skip this work detail with most of today’s dishwashers—and save about $75 and up to 6,500 gallons of water per household per year.

Insulate Your Attic Door
Yes, heat rises. That’s why you want to keep it from escaping into an unheated attic. Whether you have pull-down stairs, an attic door, or a hatch, insulate that access with fiberglass or rigid foam-board insulation and weather stripping. You’ll even find pre-made insulated attic-stair covers at home centers or online.

Switch to Smarter Lightbulbs
CFL and LED bulbs use about 75 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. That adds up to a savings of some $52 per bulb for CFLs and $65 to $400 per bulb for LEDs over the life of the bulb. Today’s cost much less and work much better than earlier versions. And since both types last far longer, you won’t have to change bulbs as often.

Make your TV more efficient
That’s right—today’s TVs can eat up just as much energy as refrigerators. If you have a set-top box, like most homes, consider trading it for one that meets Energy Star’s tougher new 3.0 specification. And if you buy a new TV, make sure it’s set to “home mode” which is more efficient than the retail mode typically used when sets are shipped. The $30 to $60 in yearly savings could pay for dinner—and a movie.

Toss Old Plasma TVs and Refrigerators
Some of the early plasma televisions we tested in 2004 could cost more than $200 per year to run. Old energy-hungry fridges are no bargain either. Many home centers offer free haul-away and recycling of old fridges—if you buy the new refrigerator from them, of course.

Unplug Video Games
These do more than just eat into your kids’ homework time: They also draw lots of power, even when they’re off or in standby mode. Simply pulling the plug can put some $125 a year back in your pocket.

Put Your Computer to Sleep
Save $75 or more per computer per year by using the standby or hibernate setting. Just be sure to turn it completely off if you take it on the road, to protect the hard drive.

Copyrighted 2011, Consumers Union of U.S., Inc. I've dined with the poor in Nigeria, the middle class, the not so elite, the elite, the super-elite. The common denominator or numerator is "God." They all give credence to HIM in different ways. Some people within the aforementioned class of people praise, glorify, honor and adore HiM without reservation and others do some or all of the above with a "symbolic tortoise of a deity" hanging on their waist come midnite at their diabolic gatherings. Even some of our self-proclaimed men of God are guilty of such nefarious acts in cohort with some political partners. The word of God says in Isaiah 1:29 that, “You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be disgraced because of the gardens that you have chosen."

My cry to Our God of Nations and ubiquity is to favor us like he did the 12 tribes of Israel because they sinned and were rebellous and yet were loved. We the Children of Nigeria are a Nation of 250 ethnic tribes minimal. Lord clean our house O God and grant us mercy. Purge the Nation of wickedness, greed and heresy. Lord we have cried, we have held vigil, we have held rallies, some have paid people to do some or all of the above, some have done neither and some have done absolutely nothing and only condemn the Nation in words and deeds with no solution or way forward but just use our plight to justify their prodigalism in a foreign Nation. Lord in the midst of all these cobwebs, untangle us O God, show thy divine mercy and move thy Nation of more tribes than the Children of Israel forward. IJN. Amen!

So many serious credibility issues with this accuser originally from Guinea in Africa. From numerous accounts and also confirmed by the prosecutors office she made so many false claims in her filing documents for her asylum among other things. She said in her asylum papers that her husband was tortured by the military in guinea while in jail and later died, house burnt down, got gang-raped by the military, was violently genitally mutilated, all lies she later admitted. She has one phone yet pays five phone bills in the tune of 100's of dollars each month. Discussed case and possible benefits with a drug dealer caught with 400 pounds of marijuana, who was among folks that paid almost $100,000 into her account within a span of 2 years. She claimed someone else's child in her tax return and lied about her income to retain her apartment.
In a quick turn of event the prosecution presented these inconsistencies to the judge in this case who granted Kahn bail and ordered that his $6 million bond be released to him while they still held his passport.

Discussing this case with a lawyer friend of mine she brought up some interesting points about the case. She noted that, "Most of the noted acts of the accuser MAY NOT be allowed into evidence under the Rape Shield Laws. People come with faults and blemishes. As such, they can still be raped." While admitting that "the accuser's credibility is very questionable", she further added that, "an argument can be made that DSK raped "the right type of woman", knowing he could get away with it."

The most serious charge against Kahn is attempted rape. The actual rape didn't occur. Sexual encounter happened which the accused claims was consensual. The same Rape Shield Laws

"allow the judge to determine whether the evidence in question... is relevant and, if so, whether or not the potential prejudicial impact of the evidence outweighs its relevance." I believe based on that premise alone, Judge Vance Jr seems to be heading in that direction already. Also the same rape shield law has a "catch-all" exception, which permits a judge to allow the introduction of any evidence, even that normally barred by a rape shield law, if it is necessary to introduce that evidence to protect the constitutional rights of the accused." I believe NY is among the states that has that "catch-all exception".
The accuser's lawyer Kenneth Thompson spoke to the media at length after the accused was released from jail cell and his ankle bracelet removed. After watching that media address by Thompson, I felt like he did a horrible job of damage control. Obviously the defense lawyer had the same information the prosecutors presented to Judge Vance. They would have presented it to the judge anyway during the hearing. The comment by Thompson to the media that, ”The only defense Dominique Strauss-Kahn has is that this sexual encounter was consensual. That is a lie,” will work against his client if he makes that statement in a courtroom because the defense attorney will submit to the court what an actual "lie" looks like on paper by presenting the accusers recanting statement about her "lies" in her asylum documents. The counsel for the accuser made a buffoon of himself addressing the media. He addressed the media as if he was talking to the jurors in a closing argument in a court of law. He even made his client look like the defendant in this sexual assault case against DSK. He pretty much turned me off with the amount of times he repeatedly mentioned the word "vagina" in his statement. I counted at least 7 times within a span of 50 seconds. He claimed DSK "grabbed it with so much force". I didn't know one can actually grab a vagina the way he described it.. It just didn't come out right for a male counsel for the accuser to come on TV and just kept saying the "V" word repeatedly. What an overkill of the vagina. What a display of misplaced and ineffective demagoguery. I can only imagine how many times he might have asked his client to repeat her ordeal with DSK whether consensual or non-consensual. In fairness to the accused counsel Kenneth Thompson, I believe he was just taking what we call in basketball, a "hail Mary" shot at this point in the department of damage control. I believe he is just preparing his case for a civil court where he doesn't have to prove his case beyond a reasonable doubt. Also the physical evidence will amount to something even if it was consensual. DSK probably would opt to settle out of court when it goes to civil court because he might still be interested in the upcoming French presidential election.

Discussing this case further with my friend lawyer friend she contributed the following statement, "The issues of lies in the accuser's asylum application are for another forum..... I say, try the Immigration court. However, People v. Jovanovic, 263 A.D.2d 182, 700 N.Y.S.2d 15...6 (N.Y. App. Div. 1st Dep't 1999 may decide how this case is handled, if it proceeds at all.." She went on further to state,
"I agree with you that the Defense lawyer for the accuser is dangerously close to the edge. He breached the confidentiality of his client yesterday…very unethical. That’s a chance lawyers take WHEN THEY ENGAGE in pre-trial publicity. Luckily, The Defense lawyer for the accuser only defends her in a Civil Court. In the Criminal Court, the prosecutor defends the accuser and the people of the state of New York. I doubt that he will OPEN THE DOOR for DSK’s lawyers to explore the accuser’s asylum application."

It's a foregone conclusion that the immigration would definitely step in at the appropriate time and do the right thing concerning the accusers statements in her asylum documents. The accuser definitely won't be giving a "carte blanche" treatment when it comes to immigration matters. There are asylum applicants with more horrifying and compelling account of their ordeal to escape from a war torn or political unstable countries have their cases still pending administrative processing for years yet this woman admitted lying in her application.

I am pretty sure that a whole lot more will be coming out about the developments in the accuser's stories and shenanigans. Stay tuned!

The presence of cocaine was noted in 2 of the pipes.
Francis Thackeray, the paleontologist from Transvaal Museum in Pretoria at that time who initiated the pipe study at that time, believes he might have an explanation, "We can't prove that Shakespeare smoked these pipes, but we do now at least know what his contemporaries were smoking" Thackeray says. According to recent reports, Thackeray who is currently the Director of the Institute for Human Evolution at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, along with a team of Scientists formerly submitted a request to dig up the remains of the Bard to the Church of England. The remains of William Shakespeare is resting in his home town of Stratford-upon-Avon. Team Thackeray plans to use a "non-destructive analysis" to conduct the forensic tests. Fox News quoted him as saying, "We have incredible techniques. We don't intend to move the remains at all."
That would be a welcomed development as we all are aware of the famous curse quote on Shakespeare's tombstone which read, "Good Friend, for Jesus' sake forbear To dig the dust enclosed here: Blessed be the man that spares these stones, And cursed be he that moves my bones" Do we really need to exhume the body of the great poet and author William Shakespeare to ascertain if he was indeed a pipe head? I don't think so. Where do we draw the line between curiosity and facts? In my opinion, it's Much Ado About Nothing By: William Shakespeare respect the man's wishes. Whether he was a pipe head, crack head or either, let the great poet and author Rest in Peace.
I declare that my domain which is about to become a dominion is covered with the anointing of the blood of Jesus. Whatever the devil, the occultists, the herbalists and their agents are planning and scheming, I declare that the Lord God shall scatter; Mighty Redeemer shall shatter and throw into a fire brand bottomless pit. In the everlasting name of the King of Kings I pray.
I went online to check my email after ending a two weeks long prayer fasting, as I continue striving towards growing my spiritual faith as a Christian. As with most Christians, financial independence and prosperity always make it to the top of our prayer points. As most people do, when I look at the inbox mail, I tend to glance at the spam box which I dubbed the “scam box” and wonder if any correspondence from my contacts or affiliate merchants that didn’t pass the mail filter test made it into the spam clogged and virus-in-waiting scam mail box. The emails that the subject starts with RE: I usually delete right away, because if I wrote you in the first place the reply has no reason being in the scam box. Then there is the usual spam letter from some “chick” from a dating website that wants to rock my black mamba. To those make-believe women that I dubbed “Spamelas” and “Spameishas” I say, “sweet silicon luscious, I am no winy-tweeting- Weiner” Then another one that is a “can’t miss” are the spam mails about penal enlargement or Viagra or it’s knock-off equivalent.
Going back to my financial blessings prayer, I thought the Almighty God was about to kick my door down with the much testified-about “financial blessings” but much to my chagrin when I opened the mail, I saw a purported mail from one of the banking institutions that I actually bank with in Nigeria when I visit the Motherland. My eyes lit up for a split second because of its timing vis-à-vis my prayer points and the end of my fasting period. My divine financial dominion joy came to a euphoric crashing reality. The agents of the commissioners of the devil’s online scam and fraud division wanted to checkmate me. I knew right away it was a scam letter because all the warning signs were there.
1 The mail wasn’t addressed to a specified recipient (undisclosed recipient)
2 The initial email address (****.com) the scammer wrote at the beginning is totally different from the email address (****.cn) he wants to be contacted.
3 There is no contact phone number in the email. However that doesn’t mean much because some of the scammers generate all kinds of domestic and international numbers.
The people that don’t see the red flags and fall victims to these acts of fraudulent schemes are typically the greedy people that want to reap were they didn’t plant a financial seed. If you never had an account in a specified bank, in a specific country what in the world would make you think there are millions of dollars waiting on you to claim from a bank? Don’t be that unsuspecting financially incapacitated person and “fall mugu” (be a fool) to the scheming, conniving fraudsters. Below is the actual email that was sent to my spam box by the scamming fraudsters.

RE: PAYMENT ON ACCRUED INTEREST OF US$1.5M

I am Mr. James Ezeh, the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR and Head of Swift Transfer Unit of Union Bank of Nigeria Plc. Lagos-Nigeria

Sometime ago, in our bank your payment was brought to our bank from Nigerian Apex Bank, CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA (C.B.N) and after some period, this money was taken back to the Federal Government treasury. For the period of time this money was in our bank, it generated an interest of US$1.5 Million, which we are about to be pay to you via Electronic banking transfer system.

For your information and advice, you need to hasten up to pick this Fund because from time to time the C.B.N auditors do come to our bank to cross-check our files and our financial update, the earlier you comply with the demands of the transferring of the fund, the faster the action, because the CBN officials wants the accrued interest to be paid to them but we refused, so when they find out that this interest fund is still in our bank they will want to call back the money to the Federal Government treasury.

What we need from you now is any form of your identification for example; your international passport or you’re driver’s license, then your telephone and fax number for easy communication with your receiving bank account details.

As a matter of fact we don’t have enough time to waste since we have wasted time in contacting our respective customers, so try and comply with the entire necessary requirement for remittance.

Contact me on our official email. investigationmonitoringunit@w.cn expecting your immediately response.

For your information we are paying you for now US$1.5M

Your urgent response is imperative
Yours Sincerely,
Why not? ~ By Emeka Mbanugo

This topic raises more questions than answers. I will raise the questions in this subject and then take my position on why polygamy should be legalized in the United States. What is the difference when a man is legally married and yet father’s children outside the marriage? Society tends to pick and choose the cause they fight for, which are mainly issues coined politically correct by the mainstream media. Where is the moral and religious outrage? There are all forms of what would tantamount to polygamy going on in the United States.
Polygamy is defined by dictionary.reference.com as “1: the practice or condition of having more than one spouse, esp. wife, at one time. 2: the habit or system of mating with more than one individual, either simultaneously or successively.” From this definition one can clearly see the practice of polygamy going on in the United States without being in the traditional or Biblical Old Testament form of polygamy. The only time that the American public is drawn to the practice of polygamy is when it involves some kind of Religious sects or the Mormon Church in Utah.
It is a matter of time in the United States before gay marriage becomes legalized in the constitution of the United States. Some gay rights activists are aggressively pushing this agenda in various states through referendum or the court system. Despite its moral and religious demagoguery, if or when gay marriage becomes legalized, would three or more gays living in the same household constitute practicing polygamy? Or is polygamy only recognized when children, women and men are involved? Lawmakers ought to be cognizant of this when they determine what constitutes polygamy.
There are celebrities and rich people that have numerous children outside of there marriage. The cute phrase for it by the society is, “cheating” or that “they fathered” a child out of wedlock. I am curious to know what would be the best description of the famous Playboy magazine Publisher Hugh Hefner who has over 50 women living with him in his Playboy mansion. He is considered a Player but not a polygamist. How convenient is that? Let’s not forget that his latest bunnies are twin sisters. Everyman’s dream yet it’s not considered as polygamy because legally he is not married to them. Golfer Tiger woods had a minimum of 13 women at his disposal at one time while legally married to then wife Elin who ironically is a twin. How ironic and convenient. I wonder if Hugh Hefner was his idol. He probably was practicing his swing, swagger but not illegal polygamy. The only reason his affairs made news was because his is a famous athletes and commands a lot of product endorsements. He lost a lot of his endorsements because of his travails. The jury is still out if all that transpired especially losing his endorsement mainly because of his race. I personally feel that he let his wife down more than anything else. People should focus on there own situation and not be very much into the shortcomings of others.
The constitution grants the freedom of religion, yet within the same constitution, polygamy is illegal. Where do the Mormons and Muslims fit in the constitution? Mormonism, founded by Joseph Smith Jr, began as restorationist movement that believed in literally restoring everything in the Old and New Testaments in the Bible. This belief included authority of prophets, temple rituals, and the ancient Semitic custom of plural marriage. From my finding on polygamy or plurality in marriage “there are an estimated 30,000-60,000 polygamist “fundamentalists” living in Utah and surrounding states. The two leading groups are the United Apostolic Brethren and the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There are so many statements in church literature in praise of polygamy. Notable statements from Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Wilford Woodruff, and Joseph F. Smith, etc believed that polygamy is necessary for the highest salvation, many present-day Mormons expect to be polygamists in the next life even though they may be personally uncomfortable with the concept.” Congress passed the Edmunds Act in 1882, which disfranchised Mormon polygamists. Utah did not become a state until 1896 after Wilford Woodruff, faced with the loss of political influence and all church facilities produced in 1890 what was called a “Manifesto” in which he stated that Mormons would give up plural marriage. Some of the fundamentalist’s members of the religious group did not agree with the manifesto and went as far as going to Mexico or Canada to solemnize their plurality in marriage. Notable among them were John W. Taylor and Brigham Young Jr.
In Islamic religion, Muslims are allowed to marry up to four wives under certain restrictions. Islam has allowed a man to marry more than one wife. It enjoined equality in treatment of all wives. The purpose of polygamy in Islam and much early traditional African society was to help solve many social and domestic problems, which a family is confronted with from time to time. The general welfare of both man and woman depends upon the husband marrying another wife. It is less prevalent in today’s society because of the cost of supporting an extended family. The Moslem law views it as permission, not a requirement. Some Muslim Countries actually don’t sanction it, example is Tunisia.
The opponents of polygamy, chiefly Christian leaders and political advocates in United States and other Western countries believe that it disturbs the family planning, as plurality of wives naturally increases the number of children; which in turn causes economic problems. The social disadvantages they claim injures the delicate feelings of women; causes deep frustrations and disappointments, giving rise to the feeling of hatred and resentment which upsets the proper upbringing of children. The New Testament teachings in the bible also seem to support the argument that a man should marry only one wife. The same Bible does teach us about the immorality of homosexuality, stealing, sexual orgies, fornication and adultery.
As a proponent of legalizing polygamy, my argument is that plural marriage goes way back to the nations of antiquity. The Christian monarchs of Europe were polygamous. For example, Henry the VIII of England had as many as eight wives. Going back to the Old Testament which also had the Ten Commandments, the great Apostles of God like Abraham, David, Solomon and others had numerous wives and concubines. The United States makes a great show of monogamy yet unofficially practice polygamy in so many ways. We are all aware of the role mistress’s play in our society. There are so many politicians and athletes who have mistresses and cheated against their spouses with other people. In some instances they cheat with people of the same sex. What an aberration and we are bent on viewing polygamy as illegal. According to an article I read at the Islamic website www.qul.org about Marriage & Morals in Islam titled, “Polygamy in Islam?” A Bishop from my country of birth Nigeria, Rt. Rev Bishop S.O. Odotula shed a light on this topic of polygamy in Toronto, Canada during a religious conference. He said: "The West by prohibiting the law of (polygamy) act with hypocrisy, as by frequent divorces they have in fact been practicing this custom." I agree with the statement made by the Bishop. His testimonial implies that African polygamous practice of three or more wives is more honest than the Western idea of marrying one wife, divorcing her, then marrying another and so on. The United States as a matter of confidence tend to ignore the polygamous royal monarchy in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Obviously this is because of the importance of the Saudi oil to the welfare of the United States and there strategist position in the Middle East.
I came from a polygamous family myself. My late dad had two wives and my mother is the second surviving wife. In the African culture, it is allowed but it doesn’t mean any man can go out there and accumulate wives without being responsible for the upbringing and provision for his household. It is an obligation, which must be fulfilled in all circumstances. There are men out there paying child support to numerous women and in some instances are dead beat dads. If the practice of polygamy was legalized I believe that it would drastically reduce some divorce situations which main objective is to gain financially from one of the spouse involved. My concluding question is what is the difference when a man is legally married and yet father’s multiple children outside of the marriage?
The best chefs I believe are men if you ask me. I have wined and dined enough in my lifetime to come to that conclusion. It is only in the conservative african culture that the men believe that it is the females responsibility to get in the kitchen and cook for the family. I have seen instances where the woman works longer hours and the man came home early or maybe is out of job in the interim and still expect the woman to come home after a long days work and cook, clean, iron and do the kids homework. The man sits on the couch and play with the remote control. Some women do all that and still get no kind of affection from the man when they are in the bedroom. I don't subscribe to the school of thought that calls this travesty african tradition. This is where western women are different from african women. An african-american woman will speak up. But most african women would wait on the man to change and quote you all kinds of biblical verses. In the mean time the man doesn't even attend church with her except when someone is getting married or a baby christening ceremony. Wake up woman, that man will not change.
Gentlemen, women love their feet rubbed, they love to be treated to a night out once in a while or once a month. Take her for a walk by the lake, park, buy her flowers,go to her job and take her out for lunch, treat her to a fine restaurant, or movie. My favorite is getting in the kitchen, dawn that apron and cook her a hearty meal. Trust me when you cook that meal, she will sing your praises and will reward you big time in the bedroom. Women love candlelights bubble baths etc. Spend a weekend out of town in a nice hotel not at a family member or friends house when you are out of town. Remind your woman how sexy she still looks because a woman would notice when those compliments stops coming or when you criticize the looks of her either directly or through a third person on a television screen. Women love to be held and shown affection in public. I can count in one hand african couples holding hands or kissing in public. Spice that relationship up, dawn that apron and make your woman smile. Yes, it does make sense!

There will be surprises this season depending on who you are cheering for this season. The Philadelphia Eagles are looking good and showing promises from now a Michael Vick led team. The Giants looked terrible against the regrouped Colts who lost to the Houston Texans on opening day.The Washington Redskins got too much sucking from the cowgirls last sunday in the NFL opening game in Washington. Naturally getting milked like that by the suck-prone cowgirls they ran out of gas. By the way the Dallas cowboys wearing their home white jersey played more of "blueballs" yesterday in defeat against the Houston Texans. To the Cowgirls fan I ask, How could that happen? What happened to the cowgirls? Talk about milking the cow. I overheard my next door neighbor's mother yelling, "Ain't nothing like the "blue balls" in dallas cos the damn dallas cowgirls sucks!" Congratulations to the Houston Texans for saving the state of Texas from the Washington Redskins who nearly pulled-off a Texas two step on the Lone Star state teams.
