Not Us

So, this past weekend, nine IC students (including two SGA Senators and myself) attended a conference at Cornell for "Young Global Leaders" entitled "Securing the Future: Oil Dependence and What We Can Do About It." This conference was organized by Cornell's chapter of Americans for Informed Democracy (AID), a growing national organization committed to helping young people (as in college students like us) become more in touch with global issues, such as U.S.-Muslim relations, or in the case of this conference, Sustainability.

First, let me say how proud I was that there were so many IC students there. There were actually supposed to be eleven. I didn't realize that many were going until I saw them there. Not even Cornell had that many people there, even if you count the members of the club who were organizing the event. There were also students from colleges all over the state (like SUNY Oswego and Niagara University) but none had the same representation of us. I think this clearly demonstrates IC's awareness and dedication to issues of Sustainability.

After attending the conference, I wonder if we're actually further ahead of the pack than we think. I think most of the nine of us there were extremely bored with the kind of facts they were presenting. Most of us had already heard them several times from our campus's own professors, like Jason Hamilton or from Al Gore in "An Inconvenient Truth." Actually, I think most people in attendance were equally as bored, but the fact that this is the kind of information they think we need shows just how behind they think we are.

During other presentations, AID and other speakers presented us with information we already had about arranging events on our campus. We sat through lectures on organizing town halls and talking to people who don't want to hear our points. It was excruciating.

Probably the only rewarding part was when we IC students were sharing our ideas about what we've done and continue to do on our campus. Personally, I think we all could have shared a lot more useful information than we were receiving.

Ithaca College is on the cutting edge of Sustainability and this year, we are on our way to paving new paths. In the coming months, the various efforts on our campus are going to begin to unite in a new way. Our campus, led by us students, can truly become a global leader with regard to one of the most important issues to face our generation. We have the power to affect great change. Game on.

--Zack Ford, Your Student Body President

Currently I am working on student evaluations of faculty and standardizing parts of them. These evaluations are read individually by the Deans and can really have an impact on the future of the professor. We have to start taking them seriously in order to voice our concerns about how we feel regarding our courses and the teacher. I am also a member of the Academic Policies Committee and hope to work on getting every professor to provide "books on reserve" in the library to save us some money. Well those are my 2 major issues currently and then i have some minor ones on the side. Basically though, I am open for anything- so have an amazing day and try not to get too stressed out (i should talk) But just remeber that you always get through it! The budget committee has heard several requests in the past few weeks, and look forward to hearing more in the near future. If an organization would like to make a request for SGA funding forms are available outside my office in the SAC. Once the form is complete, a representative from the org will meet with the budget committee to discuss allocation. The budget committee meets every Wednesday night at 8pm, but the rep will only be asked to attend for a portion of the meeting.

If you have any questions on the process please email me at gmitsti1@ithaca.edu or sgabusiness@ithaca.edu.

Thanks,
Greg

Do students who live off-campus care at all about being part of the community in which they now belong? If so, why weren't any of them at today's brunch and so few at the brunch two weeks back?

I want to strengthen the relationship between Ithaca College and the city and town of Ithaca, but I can't do that by myself.
