TechPoint Aims to Create Jobs by Growing IT-Related Health and Life Science Businesses through New ALHIT Initiative

INDIANAPOLIS, November 2, 2009 — With the support of law firm Ice Miller LLP and 30 leading information technology, health care and life sciences experts, TechPoint is launching a new statewide initiative aimed at creating and growing more information technology companies that will provide innovative solutions for Indiana’s $69 billion health and life sciences sector.

ALHIT (Advancing Life Science & Health Care Information Technology) will identify opportunities for increased use of information technology in the health and life sciences sector. The initiative will also identify research in academia and in the marketplace that can be commercialized or “spun out” with venture capital and other funding sources.

ALHIT plans to leverage Indiana’s nationally recognized strength in health care and life sciences as well as opportunities created under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) to advance the creation of new information technology companies. Currently, there are about 70 IT-related health and life science businesses in Indiana.

Jim Jay, president and CEO of TechPoint, said ALHIT is a logical tech sector effort that will further enhance Indiana’s life sciences strengths and complement statewide medical-based organizations and initiatives.

“Grants and incentives made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act are tied to benchmarks that must be met by 2014,” Jay said. “This means that the next five years are going to be critical in the expansion of current technologies and the development of new technologies that improve all aspects of health care and innovation in the life sciences.”

“For many years, health and life science information technology companies have grown organically due to the needs of Lilly, Cook, Roche and others,” said Tom Walsh, partner at Ice Miller LLP and chair of the law firm’s Indianapolis intellectual property group. “With so much national attention focused on electronic health information, Indiana’s economy will benefit greatly from a catalyst group identifying opportunities and connecting innovators and funding sources.”

Alvin Givens, vice president of Chase and the Chase Emerging Markets Division, will serve as the inaugural chairman of ALHIT. Givens has been involved with the development of ALHIT since he and several industry leaders first discussed forming the initiative in 2007.

According to a 2008 Battelle study, Indiana has gained bioscience jobs at twice the national average, and the 2008 TechAmerica Cyberstates report showed Indiana as the fastest-growing state for technology-related jobs.

“Maaguzi and Indigo BioSystems are examples of clinical informatics and research technology companies spun out of Lilly in the past five years that are helping to make pharmaceuticals safer and getting them to market faster,” said Raul Zavaleta, Partner, Volatus Advisors, LLC. “With the organizational and infrastructure support from TechPoint and Ice Miller, ALHIT is an industry-lead initiative that has the potential for significant positive impact on Indiana’s tech, pharma and broader health and life sciences industries.”

“The correlation between health and life science companies and IT companies is similar to the symbiosis of Indiana manufacturing and logistics companies,” Jay continued. “Both manufacturing and logistics are viable industries in their own rights, but each is enhanced by the success of the other. The same positive impact will be seen in the health and life science and IT sectors with the right support and resources.”

ALHIT initiative participants include:

• David Becker, President, CEO & Chairman of the Board – First Internet Bank
• Greg Bell, President and CEO – Healthx
• Thomas A. Walsh, Partner & Indianapolis Intellectual Property Group Chair – Ice Miller LLP
• Steve Witz, Director of Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering – Purdue’s Discovery Park

Jay said more ALHIT members will be added as additional expertise is required, but that the current participants represent the professionals, organizations and companies that have been involved in planning ALHIT since initial discussions about forming the initiative began about two years ago.

ALHIT is currently conducting a survey of Indiana IT-related health care and life science companies. To participate in the survey click here.

Ice Miller LLP Establishes an Endowed Scholarship at Purdue University

Indianapolis, October 5, 2009 – Ice Miller LLP announced today that it has established an endowed scholarship at Purdue University. Funds from the $25,000 scholarship will be used to provide financial support to Purdue University students based on academic merit. Fifty percent of the income will be used for scholarships for undergraduates in the College of Agriculture and fifty percent will be used for scholarships for undergraduates enrolled in the Burton D. Morgan Center Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programs.

"Purdue University is synonymous with excellence, tradition and innovation," stated Byron Myers, chief managing partner, Ice Miller LLP. "We are proud to support the university in their continuing mission to foster intellectual, professional and personal development for lifelong learning."

Ice Miller's relationship with Purdue University dates back to the 1920s and Ice Miller attorney Robert McCord. McCord helped draft the building facilities acts of 1927 and 1929, which enabled universities in the state to finance structures payable out of revenues and student fees. According to the book History of a Hoosier Law Firm, Herman B Wells, the long-time President of Indiana University, R.B. Stewart, the Treasurer of Purdue University, and J. Dwight Peterson, together with Mr. McCord, were responsible for establishing the market for the bonds used to finance scores of buildings on the state university campuses. Today, the Firm continues to work with Purdue University on sophisticated financing matters.

In addition to the Firm's support, Ice Miller partner Joe DeGroff and his family have pledged an additional $25,000 to Purdue's Access & Success scholarship campaign. Thanks to a donor match program, the combined gifts from Ice Miller and DeGroff doubled in value to $100,000 in endowed funds for scholarships.

"Purdue University has been an important part of my life and a source of pride for many of my colleagues," stated DeGroff. "It's important to provide opportunities to those students who have shown a willingness to learn in an effort to create opportunities for Indiana and contribute to the global economy."

DeGroff's father, Harold, was a longtime faculty member and dean of the aeronautical engineering school who also taught in the Krannert School. DeGroff is currently a member of Ice Miller's business group and serves on the boards of both the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship and its home, Discovery Park.

The Firm's scholarship announcement was made during the College of Agriculture's Scholarship Banquet on September 27, 2009. Beth Bechdol, director of agribusiness strategies at Ice Miller, represented the Firm at the event attended by scholarship recipients, their families, award sponsors, department heads, academic advisors and other guests. Bechdol has served on the Purdue University's Dean of Agriculture's Advisory Council and is a member of the Purdue Research Foundation's Board of Directors.

“The support of Ice Miller is greatly appreciated by Purdue University and the College of Agriculture,” said Jay Akridge, Dean of the Purdue College of Agriculture. “With the Ice Miller Scholarships, Purdue Agriculture will continue to attract the best and brightest students from Indiana, the nation and the world.”

Ballots were mailed to attorneys in Indiana who were asked to vote for the best lawyers they had personally observed in action. Each lawyer was given a score based on the number and types of votes received. Votes received from lawyers in other law firms were awarded more points than votes received from lawyers in the same firm.

Sherry Fabina-Abney will be featured in the issue because, in addition to being named a 2009 Super Lawyer in health care, her family raises a heard of belted galloway, a rare breed of cattle originally from the rugged and hilly regions of Scotland. Fabina-Abney also raises chickens and goats on her small working farm in Johnson County.
