Mesothelioma is a disease caused by exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma victims almost always win money damages if they sue, but the cases can be complicated and a mesothelioma lawyer is usually needed to identify the parties who are liable for the asbestos exposure (asbestos manufacturers, insurance companies, or asbestos victims' trust funds) and begin the lawsuit or settlement process. Because mesothelioma cases are a specialized legal niche it's important to understand how mesothelioma lawyers operate and how to hire a good one. Read on to learn more. (For general information about hiring an attorney, check out Nolo's article Finding a Personal Injury Lawyer)

The Legal Background

People who find out that they are suffering from mesothelioma (often as a result of working with asbestos) usually have an excellent chance of recovering substantial money damages -- either from the company that manufactured or installed the asbestos, or from an asbestos victims' trust fund. But these cases can get complex, especially from a medical standpoint, since mesothelioma often shows up 10 to 40 years after exposure to asbestos. Having an experienced attorney on your side -- especially one with a record of success in mesothelioma cases -- can make all the difference. (To learn more about mesothelioma cases, read Nolo's article Asbestos and Mesothelioma Lawsuits: What to Expect.)
Finding the right mesothelioma lawyer can be key to your case, but it can also take time and effort. If you are not feeling well, make sure you get help from a consumer savvy relative or friend. As discussed below, you'll get the best results if you do careful research as to a lawyer's qualifications and track record and then interview several. You also may need to bargain as to the amount of the contingency fee and other costs.

Ways to Find the Right Mesothelioma Lawyer

Ask former colleagues. If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, chances are good that people who you worked with at the time of your exposure also suffer from it and may have already hired a lawyer and filed a lawsuit. If they have achieved a good result through a lawyer they like and respect, this is one good place to start.
Check Nolo's online Lawyer Directory. Some attorneys featured in Nolo's lawyer directory handle mesothelioma cases (full disclosure: lawyers pay a fee to list with Nolo). These attorneys have filled out a detailed profile containing valuable information about their schooling, professional background, legal specialties, and personal attitudes. While there are also a number of other legal directories, we believe Nolo's provides the most consumer friendly information. Go to the Mesothelioma - Asbestos section of Nolo's Lawyer Directory to find a mesothelioma attorney in your area.
Investigate lawyers online. Because mesothelioma cases can be so profitable, many law firms spend big dollars on Internet ads and websites. Just Google mesothelioma lawyer and you'll find a long list. Click on a few ads or websites and you'll see that everyone claims to be the best of the best. How do you cut through all this hype to focus on a short list of hopefully excellent mesothelioma lawyers? We recommend that you carefully read the legal information each lawyer provides. In our experience lawyers who provide well-written, in-depth information demonstrate a superior sensitivity to client needs. By the same token, we distrust lawyers who say little more than "I can get you millions pronto -- trust me."

How to Choose the Right Mesothelioma Lawyer

Check a lawyer's references. A good mesothelioma lawyer should be able to provide you with the name and contact information of a few satisfied clients. Of course, the lawyer will have to get the permission of the client, but this can usually be arranged. Although you'll only be given the names of very satisfied clients, it can still be very helpful to talk to someone who has worked with the lawyer you are considering in a mesothelioma case.
Interview the lawyers. Once you develop a short list of mesothelioma lawyers, contact their offices (again, get help if you are very ill). Request a case evaluation and, if possible, arrange a personal interview. Ask who exactly will manage your case (often a case manager, who is a non-lawyer in larger firms). Find out who you can call or email if you have questions, and how long it will take to get back to you. Anticipating these questions, many law firms will give you a written overview of what to expect. Especially if it's detailed and guarantees that all calls and emails will be returned in 24 hours, this is a good sign.
Negotiate fees with the lawyer. Mesothelioma lawyers charge a contingency fee for their legal representation, plus additional costs to prepare your case. One good approach is to contact several lawyers, making it clear that you'll take your time before signing a fee agreement. Your goal is to find a good quality lawyer who will represent you for 25% to 30% of your recovery, instead of 33% to 40%. But keep in mind that mesothelioma cases can be very complex. If you find an attorney who comes well-recommended and has a lot of experience (and a record of success) representing mesothelioma clients, a few percentage points on a contingency fee probably shouldn't dictate whether or not you hire that attorney.
Find out how are costs handled. A good attorney will deduct costs (things like filing fees and expert witnesses' compensation) off the top of any settlement or award, before the money is divided and the attorney takes their agreed-upon percentage. That way you and the attorney share payment of the costs. And a good attorney will give you receipts showing that all costs incurred were specific to your case -- meaning you're not being saddled with part of the bill for the firm's general operating expenses.

Supplement companies are expert marketers and push products that flat out don't do a thing.

After going through supplement guides, I've see a lot of popular supplements that promise diamonds but deliver coal.

They end up being about as useless as a hat full of busted holes.

Below are 5 big sellers that don't perform as advertised.

1. BCAAs

This is an easy one to fool people on. I use to buy them myself.

They're important. That's where we get fooled.

But we can easily get them in our diet. Especially if taking protein powder.

2. Glucosamine

I fell into this trap too. But it was more broscience than anything else.

It just doesn't help active people with their joint pain.

3. Tribulus terrestris

This stuff flies off the shelves.

It does make you randy.

But...

doesn't do a single thing to raise your testosterone.

This stuff doesn't even work when inject into lab rats.

4. Conjugated Linoleic Acid

You may know it as the weight loss wonder CLA. But a supplement under a different name doesn't work any better.

5. Glutamine

This is another tricky one.

Their right in the fact that it does help build muscle.

What they don't tell us is that the pill or powder that they sell...

needs to be injected.

Yikes!

When we swallow glutamine it gets absorbed by the intestines. It never makes it to our muscle.

A total waste.

That's just 5. There are lots more.

Preparing for Exam Success!

Having exams ahead and e-learning taking over books, I wanted to share with you some top study tips to assist you in learning and improving memory to enhance maximum successes in your exams! Apply these study tips and you will be surprised to see how you can improve your study skills and put yourself on track to achieving those A’s in your exams – it’s just like winning an Oscar!

Study Tip #1

Don’t hesitate to ask study questions:Certainly, depending on what you’re studying, it may be quite difficult to get into a position to understand a concept, theory or other information you need to learn. This is where it is invaluable to ask questions of your teachers, lecturers or other educators. Don’t be afraid of asking a ‘stupid’ question – there really is no such thing when it comes to study and learning! Embrace your curiosity, for as William Arthur Ward said: “Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning.” Doing so will allow you to fill in the blanks and better prepare you for exams.

Study Tip #2

Understand your study topics in your own words: Your teacher or lecturer can explain something to you, you can learn it from a text book, your friends can study with you, even your own notes can explain it to you but all these explanations are of little use if, by the end, you can’t explain what you have learned to yourself. If you don’t understand a study concept that you need to illustrate in an exam to get top exam results, then you won’t be happy with your end exam result. To combat this, get into the habit of explaining whatever it is you are studying, in your own words, so you understand your study notes. The key to help improve your memory is to understand what you’ve learned when you are studying it. So don’t just memorise and tick off the list – make sure you understand your theory.

Study Tip #3

Quiz yourself: Once you feel you understand a concept or a topic, it is important to test yourself on it. Try and replicate exam conditions as much as possible: turn your phone off, don’t talk, time yourself etc. You can set yourself a study quiz or practice exam questions and, so long as you approach it with the right mindset, you can get a very good idea of how much you know. You gain a greater insight into where you stand in relation to what you’ve studied so far. Also, it will give you some much need exam preparation, making the actual exam a more comfortable experience. Flashcards are ideal for boosting your memory and help you recall theory, definitions and key dates – these are great for quick study sessions, especially straight before an exam.

Study Tip #4

Get Creative with online study tools: Don’t feel obliged to just sit in front of a book with a highlighter; there are many different ways to study. You should pick whatever works for you. Try using as many study tools and techniques as possible to help you study better and find what works best for you. Perfect examples of such study tools would be online flashcards, mind maps, mnemonics, online study planners, video and audio resources. Login to your ExamTime account now to access your free online study tools; mind maps, flashcards, study quizzes and practice exam answers and bring your study notes with you wherever you are.

Study Tip #5

Set your study goals and create a flexible study plan: In order to achieve exam success you need to know what you want to achieve. That’s why it is extremely important to set your Study Goals now and outline to yourself what you need to do. With your study goals in mind and your end of year exams weeks and months away it makes sense to have a flexible study plan as opposed to a rigid one. The closer you get to your exams the more concrete your study plan should be, but at this point it should be porous. It should be broad enough to allow you to add and change aspects but concise enough so you know you’re covering each subject/topic as best you can at this point.

Facing Life’s Big Challenges and Coming out on Top

“Life always waits for some crisis to occur before revealing itself at its most brilliant.” ~Paul Coelho

I will never forget that day.
It is still as clear in my mind as if it were yesterday.
My son was just a little over three. He was going to a mainstream kindergarten and, well, his teacher had very gently suggested we seek a professional’s help.
You see, he didn’t understand what the teachers were saying to him. He was restless and fidgety. He also bounced form activity to activity.
This was our first ever visit to a speech pathologist, and she suspected autism. The possibility that our child has a life-long disability seemed like a death sentence.
So we did what any normal, self-respecting parent would do: we dismissed her concerns.
We were outraged. How dare she say this? What right did she have? Our son is not autistic. He just has a language delay; he’s just tad over active.
Then we did the next best thing: we put him in an early intervention center.
Although we were sure that it wasn’t this thing that was wrong, we knew something was. And we had to do something. We had to be responsible parents. Now he was getting help with his sensory issues (something I understood much later), fine motor, play, and language skills.
In retrospect, I wonder how I could have missed those early signs. I guess that was the greatest form of a denial—only a mother could find a justification for every symptom of what could be wrong.
It’s quite ironic, actually. We had an appointment with the developmental pediatrician and been waiting for this day for over two months. And then we had to cancel
My husband called in to let them know, and the receptionist asked, “Are you sure you can’t make it today? It will take a long time to reschedule.”
My husband said, “Yes, my wife has just given birth to our second son.”
And so amidst all the chaos of having a newborn, my first born got diagnosed and I felt as if my life was completely shattered.
I felt cheated—for me, my son, and my family.
He did not deserve this.
We did not deserve this.
How could it happen to us? What did we do wrong?
There was time for grief and acceptance. (Don’t know how many days I cried for.) Then it was time to get to work.
And so I did.
I decided to leave my job in academia. I did not care about any of that any more. All I cared about was my son. I wanted to make everything right.
And the only way I knew was to become an expert myself. This is something I excel it— researching, synthesizing, and becoming a self-proclaimed know-it-all on a topic of my choice.
Only this time, the stakes were high. And the goal was to save my son’s present and his future.
I bought 30+ books on Autism spectrum disorders and therapies, and memoirs of parents living with these special children. I got informal training in speech, occupational, and ABA therapies and hired my own therapists to do the work.
And my son made progress by leaps and bounds. He went through two years worth of therapies in six months, shocking his therapists and consultants alike. How could he do this, they wondered. They had never seen any child do this before. Ever. They called him gifted.
We were so grateful for his learning ability.
This was the kid who “might never catch up,” communicated to us by a helpful early intervention staff member.
Two years of tears and sweat, a big chunk of our joint savings, and lack of any social activities went into this story.
He surpassed all their expectations. He outperformed all his fellow classmates in math and reading. He is a kid who is eccentric—the emotional age of kids half his age, loud, always happy, always fun. And he is going to a mainstream school.
His diagnosis was formally changed to Asperger’s, which has a better prognosis in terms of social and emotional well-being.
Because I ended up staying at home for over five years (my second child also started speaking late), I had time to re-evaluate my life.
I decided to let go of all that I was expected to do—a job that didn’t feed my soul, a social circle that started to disappear, and flashy stuff that we simply couldn’t afford anymore.
My son’s diagnosis turned our lives upside down. But it also taught us to appreciate both of our sons for who they are and to be grateful for each and every blessing in our lives.
At the end, I came out on top because I adopted the following beliefs:
Awful things might happen to you; take all the time you need to face the reality.
You need to grieve; do it.
Need to cry, not come out of your house, stay in bed all day? You can do that.
What you can’t do is keep it all bottled up inside, pretending it never happened. That your life is the same as it was a day before.
You need to face your emotions and deal with them. But don’t rush. Take your time. Healing takes time. It will happen when you come to terms with it.
It is not your fault.
I am sure you are thinking that it’s your fault—that whatever you’re going through, you caused it somehow.
We all feel that way. We scrutinize our life. We go over every inch to try and see if we did anything wrong.
It’s not your fault—and it’s also not going to do you any good thinking like that and torturing yourself in the process.
If you need to hear it, ask somebody you trust. And then really listen. Say it with me: It is not your fault.
Let go of what you don’t need anymore.
You have faced a setback. Your life is different, so you have to do things differently.
What is it that you don’t need in your life anymore? Is there a job that isn’t working for you? Any commitments you made? How many things do you say yes to that you could just pull back from?
Bow out gracefully.
Your husband loses his job. Your teenager has been in an accident. Your mom’s tumor is malignant. Your brother lost his house so his family has to move in temporarily.
Whatever it is, it needs your attention, which means the unimportant must go.. Now.
Start believing and discover possibilities.
Your life is different now but that doesn’t mean it has to be worse. It can be better. Don’t listen to the naysayers and anyone else who tells you otherwise.
Don’t listen to the experts who tell you that your chances are not good. Listen to your gut. Do the work.
You might feel like you are all alone in this, or that you don’t have all the resources. You might feel trapped or feel like you don’t have many choices. Become resourceful. Do the best you can.
Amidst that chaos, can you discover any truths about your life and your dreams?
Now that you have let go of stuff that doesn’t matter, stuff that didn’t work, what could you do to bring normalcy to your life? What can you do to stay sane?
You don’t have to go through a major life change to appreciate what you have. All it takes is a wake up call. Mine was major; yours doesn’t have to be.
What will it take for you ?

3 Lessons to Help You Find Peace When Fighting a Hard Battle

“He who has health has hope, and he who has hope has everything.” ~Proverb
August 3, 2001. I still remember it like it was yesterday. It was around six o’clock in the evening when she sat us down. Luther Vandross was singing in the background on the radio: “And it’s so amazing and amazing, I can stay forever and forever. Here in love and no, leave you never.”
Quite ironic when you think about the news I would soon receive.
I had just finished summer school and my sister had just returned from an internship on the East Coast. My mother had such a pensive, yet positive look on her face when she asked us to come into the living room.
“This is hard for me to say, so I am just going to say it: I have cancer.”
Immediately, my sister and I broke into tears because, up until that point, every single relative or friend who had battled cancer lost. And in my shocked state, I thought it was perhaps time to start saying goodbye because I was already feeling quite defeated.
The person who had always been the anchor in our family would soon become lighter due to weekly radiation and chemotherapy appointments. Although she physically grew weaker, her actions taught me a few lessons I will never forget.
Today, I would like to share three of them with you:
Learn to Let Go
Impermanence. Everything fades away and nothing lasts forever.
My mom used to have long, beautiful black hair with a sheen that many envied..
Unfortunately, the type of chemotherapy she was being treated with slowly killed her hair cells. As for many women, this was very hard for her to accept because it was a part of her identity, her femininity, and it’s generally what society deems to be beautiful.
But as the appointments stacked up and the strands dwindled away, she had to face a reality that was quite sobering: most of her hair was gone, and she needed to find the courage to ask my father to completely shave her head.
Then the day finally came.
As the remaining hair fell to the ground, Black Rapunzel was replaced by a cancer patient who learned to be grateful for what was instead of trying to hold on to something that no longer existed.
As Steve Maraboli wrote, “The truth is, unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation, unless you realize that the situation is over, you cannot move forward.”
My mother learned to let go and finally made the decision to move forward.
Inspire Yourself with Your Journey
“That it will never come again is what makes life so sweet” is something my mother would say. “So write it all down—the victories, the setbacks, the magical moments, the not so loving moments, and the moments of complete loneliness. Write it all down to serve as a reminder.”
Each day we awaken, we are given a pen with 86,400 seconds of ink to write with.
During her first week of treatments, my mother picked up a journal to write about her fight with the Big C and how she planned to defeat it, even though she was sometimes the one knocked down for a while. Nevertheless, she persisted.
Sure, she wrote about her hair loss, the pain at night, and the sadness she sometimes felt. But she also wrote about the joys of raising her children, the extra energy she could sometimes muster up to walk a bit further, and the faith and hope that was keeping her grounded.
She saw her journal as a way to inspire herself when she wanted to look back and see how far she had come on her journey thus far.

Love Well and Far

Cancer woke us up to the fact that nothing lasts forever, and words that go unsaid may never be spoken.

After my mother’s diagnosis, my close family got even closer as she expressed her desire for us to show more love to each other, and to be grateful not only for the fun, easy times, but also for the tougher times.

That’s what it means to love well and far: loving unconditionally even when it’s hard. Sharing your love even when it’s difficult. Being there for the people you love when they need you the most.

So I ask you these three important questions: Is there anything in your life that you feel you need to let go of? Are you recording the magic moments from your life? Are you reaching far with your love?

I wanted to share these three lessons not only to pay tribute to my mother, who has been in remission for the past twelve years, but also to serve as a beacon of hope for those who may be dealing with something similar right now. It’s hard and it hurts, but now is the time to be stronger and more loving than ever.

Now it is the time to love well and far

Preserving Kindness in a Busy World: We Are All Connected

“.The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest good intention.” ~Oscar Wilde
Three times in the last two months I have nearly been run over by a fellow shopper’s grocery cart. Each time the customer rushing closely behind me had to suddenly swerve and push past, clearly annoyed with the obstacle, which was me.
As unpleasant as this was, I can relate to that shopper’s sense of urgency. Grocery shopping is one of my least favorite tasks. I focus on my list, sometimes while talking on the phone, and get done as quickly as possible.
There has always been busyness and stress to distract us from one another. Now with the pervasiveness of smart phones, there are requests for our attention always at our fingertips, pulling us away from the people right in front of us.
When I focus exclusively on my own needs I, too, am oblivious to the people around me.
I used to take my grandmother to the grocery store, when she was still determined to do her own shopping. Long suffering with emphysema, it took a tremendous amount of energy for her to get dressed and go on such an outing.
As she rode around in her scooter while I walked in tandem, she always had a smile for the ladies behind the deli counter who remembered her name. At check out, too, the clerks recognized her and would say how good it was to see her. Once in a while another shopper would look at her and share a friendly greeting.
In those moments I glimpsed my grandmother’s younger, playful self as she bantered back and forth, eager to experience those connections again.
I felt overflowing gratitude for these small acts of kindness. These folks could easily have continued about their day without pausing to acknowledge this frail woman. Such a small effort on their part became a high point that would set the tone for the rest of my grandmother’s day.
The reason she persevered in doing her own shopping was not the independence of getting her own groceries; it was the shared humanity she experienced in these small acts of kindness.
The conversations with the salesclerks and the few shoppers who smiled and greeted her buoyed her spirits beyond anything I alone could provide.
In the produce section recently I was considering my mental shopping list when a woman approached. She paused a moment to gaze at the heads of red leaf lettuce. Then she turned to me and beamed,
“Aren’t they just so pretty?!”
She happily picked one up and continued shopping. As I paused in front of the lettuces I realized they were quite lovely. And I smiled.
In one simple, refreshing comment that woman shared an acknowledgement of me..
She saw me, affirmed our shared experience, and presumed that I, too, would value the beauty laid before us.
My life is full. I am not seeking friendship in the grocery store.
But in that simple exchange I was reminded that we are all connected to one another.
I recently read that “among our most powerful human motive is the desire to form and maintain social bonds.” (Baumerstein & Leary.) We are social beings. No matter how busy or independent we are, our actions affect others.
With that in mind, while I was at the grocery today I made a few changes.
Slow down.
I walked at a steady pace. No speeding down the aisles.
At the freezer aisle a lady in a scooter asked me for help. This never happened when I was racing through the aisles. I gladly reached what she needed.
Observe.
I looked around me and made eye contact with several people. I stayed off my phone.
In the cereal aisle I noticed a woman with two young children, and I smiled at her.
Stay present.
At the check out, an older gentleman ahead of me turned around hesitantly. On making eye contact he initiated a conversation about his wife who passed away. It was a brief exchange that never would have happened had I been checking my email on my smart phone.
I will never know how these small acts of kindness affected anyone else today. But I do know that I respected my connection to these strangers by being fully present in those moments.
Being open to others might take us away briefly from our multitasking, busy lives. But by doing so we honor the inherent value in ourselves and each other. And nobody is left feeling like a speed bump in the grocery aisle of life

Loving Others Without Expecting Them to Fill a Void

“You must love in such a way that the person you love feels free.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh
Conventional notions of what it means to love are populated with expectations for reciprocity that often get us into trouble. I know this personally, because whenever I have “freely” given my love, and it has not been rewarded with reciprocity, I have often come face to face with my resentment.
This has been especially true of my intimate relationships. I want the people who fall into this category, in particular, to reciprocate my love. I expect them to. But, as Thich Nhat Hanh points out, love is expansive, not constrictive.
I had a boyfriend once, for example, who although he seemed to genuinely like spending time with me, didn’t make our relationship much of a priority in his life. This was a guy who was pretty laid back in general and so I discounted his reserve and tried to be patient, thinking we’d eventually turn a corner.
What became clear, over the course of four years, is that my patience was thinly veiling a whole host of, now, disappointed expectations for reciprocity.. And in the end I felt angry and betrayed.
The question is: by whom really?
When some time had passed, and I was able to look back on the situation with a little more objectivity, it became clear I’d entered into the relationship with typical expectations for attention, time, comfort, and affection—in other words, an agenda.
I don’t mean to say there is anything wrong with wanting to be loved.. There isn’t, of course. It is a good and natural impulse.
We all deserve the love of our intimate others and should be careful to choose partners whose love for us is a natural, abundant outpouring of their feelings, and investment in us and our wellbeing.
The desire to be loved—to the extent that it is fueled by any underlying agendas or feelings of isolation and loneliness—can be very problematic. For it often turns a relationship into some version of, “I’ll scratch your back, if you’ll scratch mine.” And love isn’t contractual.
However, bargaining is, and this, unfortunately, was the weak foundation on which my own compromised relationship stood and faltered. He failed to invest in the relationship while taking advantage of all the intimate benefits, and I failed to draw good boundaries; I settled for being used, rather than being loved.
Revealed in all this was the fact that I hadn’t exactly been looking after my own needs very well. I’d neglected and betrayed myself, in some sense, and needed to assume greater responsibility for my own personal happiness.
To that end I began a quest for locating the sense of inner contentment and satisfaction I so craved, but was not in possession of. I read books, magazines, watched films, and made note of what resonated with me and what did not—what stirred my enthusiasm, what made sense.
I became more curious about my inner life. An act of love in itself.
Later, I began a regular practice of journal writing and meditation. I’m a big believer in the contemplative arts, which, for me, can include things like painting, running, swimming, knitting—almost anything that helps you reach a more contemplative state of mind. For me this was huge.
What I have learned the hard way is that a robust love stands the best chance of materializing between people who have ripened sufficiently as individuals. And it is always a work in progress.
Love is never complete. Just as life is always moving and re-shaping itself, this is true with love.
Thus, loving in such a way that the person we love feels free is as simple and straightforward as it is complex and discursive.
Essentially, we need to practice being the love we wish to see in the world, and that requires a deeply rooted sense of reverence and respect for ourselves, our intimate others, and the wonderfully complex, exquisitely vulnerable, flawed humanity we share.
It requires making mistakes, making amends, and trying to manage matters with an increasing degree of skill and intelligence. Not to mention forgiveness..
Here is a lovely quote by Rumi that really gets to the heart of the matter.
And still, after all this time, the Sun has never said to the Earth
“You owe me.”
Look what happens with love like that.
It lights up the sky.
Which is to say, we need to be love. That is all there really is to it in the end—simple, but not easy, as with most things worth striving for in life. Then the love returned by others can be received as the gift that it is.
Ultimately, love is its own reward. Generous. Expansive. Inclusive. Receptive. Liberating.
Love well, live well!

How Anger Leads to Anxiety and What to Do About It

“Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.” ~Buddha
I have a confession: I’m mildly obsessed with anger.
Not the negative feelings, the volatile outbursts, or the fly-off-the-handle reactions, but rather, how humans express anger.
I’ve largely made my living by dealing with various states of anger. More on that in a bit…
Years ago I was shopping at a bookstore with my friend Alex. We were first time parents with toddlers at home.
The idea was to find resources on how to raise emotionally healthy children, and to avoid the parenting mishaps we witnessed too often at work.
As school social workers we provided family counseling to young children and wayward teens in the inner city.
As Alex obsessively scoured the aisles for the latest research-based writings on emotional intelligence, my eyes gravitated towards an entirely different topic.
The black, matte-textured book with the blood red title practically screamed at me: Hatred: The Psychological Descent into Violence.
I devoured it that night.
It’s not that I didn’t want my kid to learn to soothe himself when upset, to resist peer pressure, or to misread social cues—but in that moment I felt a stronger pull.
Part of the fascination stems from my ancestry; I’m half-Italian and half-Irish. A DNA hotbed, if you will.
Meals were eventful. When I would lose my cool at the dinner table, my dad would wildly gesticulate in my mom’s direction. She, in turn, would shrug and reply “It’s The Fighting Irish, in her, I suppose.”
Additionally, I’m a psychotherapist who specializes in anxiety issues—generalized, panic and social anxiety disorders.
Do you want to know the quickest way to get a handle on your anxiety? Get ahold of your anger.
I realize this may sound counter-intuitive. After all, we don’t normally associate anxious people with bad tempers and loud voices.
The anger management connection is not exactly linear.
It takes courage to express anger—to stand up for yourself and your values, which sometimes includes taking an unpopular stance.
Bravery is valiant, strong, and admirable, while anxiety is cowardly, weak, and anything but enviable.
Because many anxious people have a problem asserting themselves, feelings of helplessness, avoidance, and frustration take residence.
Compounding the issue is the fear that if you express anger, you might lose control.
And since many anxious individuals are people-pleasers and caretakers, these feelings are especially unwanted.
But feelings go somewhere.
And typically, when you take on too much responsibility, you inevitably feel exhausted, taken advantage of, and angry.
If you don’t have a firm grasp on your anger responses, you’re going to hold it in until it explodes, or you’re going to yell, scream, stomp your feet, and possibly say and do things you regret.
Then comes the guilt. And next, the overwhelming urge to fix the situation, and before you know it, the cycle repeats itself again.
All the while, you’re wasting precious emotional energy that could be better used on enjoyable tasks.
The good news is there’s strategies you can do today to help you feel more calm.

I included five common ways I help us go from anxiety to zen below:

1. List the places in your body where you feel anger.
Is it in your chest? What happens to your heart rate? How does your stomach feel?
It’s important to recognize the physical cues of anger in order to alert youself that it’s time to calm down.

2. Visualize different behavioral responses. How do you react when you feel angry?

Do you scream, tantrum, throw things, bottle it inside, or pretend that everything is fine?
Write down three different reactions you will do instead, such as:
Calmly assert your needs, deep breathing, count to ten, walk away rather than stick around for a fight, and close your eyes to reduce visual stimulation, etc.

3. Make friends with “no.”
I know, many nice people have a hard time with this one. The association with conflict makes us feel mean, insensitive, or too direct.
Know that “no” means you respect yourself, your time, and your values. Practice saying “no” in the mirror until it sounds deliberate and natural.

4. Ask yourself if you value expressing anger over getting along with others..
It’s a fact that some people enjoy the adrenaline rush of letting go and projecting their uncomfortable feelings onto others.
Recognize that the short-term feelings of power are no match for the sleeplessness, headaches, and despair, which endure long after the “anger high” wears off.

5. Think about the last time you got angry. How did you go from anger to a calmer place?

You’re probably really good at getting angry already, so let’s focus on the other side. Be specific. What behaviors did you call upon to get to zen?
This will reinforce your coping strategies, and it will serve as a reminder to focus on solutions rather than stewing in anger.
The more you practice reacting in positive ways, waiting until the anger subsides, and considering your options, the more skilled you will become at managing anger.
It’s possible that your body is wired to be more anxiety-sensitive, and you’ll have to work harder than others to calm yourself. And that’s okay.
These are temporary solutions, and you’ll still need to control the anxiety itself. But they’ll get you started in learning to respond with more awareness, and less emotion.
You’re the expert on your life. And you get to choose how much anger to allow in your heart, mind, and body every day.
With intentional focus on doing things differently, you can feel more calm, confident, and in control.

Dealing with Dark Days: Help for When You Don’t Feel Your Best

“The problem is not that there are problems. The problem is expecting otherwise and thinking that having problems is a problem.” ~Theodore I. Rubin

I live in a rainy city. For most of the winter it’s endless grey—weeks in which you’re lucky to get a glimpse of the sun at all.

It might be drizzling, it might be pouring, it might be merely fog. It is certainly wet.

For me and a lot of the people who live here, it’s almost a deal breaker. When I first arrived, I spent a lot of time complaining that it was raining again. When the sun came out, it was summarily dismissed with “yeah, but for how long?”

Sometimes I still fantasize of moving somewhere nice and hot. Maybe I’ll melt all summer long, but at least there’s sun, right?

But the bottom line is that I like living here. For a thousand reasons, it’s my home. I’m not going anywhere.

So my choice is this: embrace my decision with a full heart, rain and all, or live in bitterness, fearing the next cloud.

I can’t change the weather.

I also live in a rainy mind. Like everyone I’ve met, I have anxieties, fears, and a thousand other difficult moods that arise in me on days when I’d counted on sunny, focused productivity.

For the last couple of years it’s been panic attacks.

Everything is going so well until something derails and my world becomes scary, my breath comes with difficulty, and I’m falling down the rabbit hole again.

The hardest part to let go is my plans for the day. I was going to write a blog post, clean the kitchen, or go out with friends, but now I’m crouched in the corner expending all my energy to keep air pumping into and out of my lungs.

Not fun.

But recently I realized, I can’t change the weather.

Sure, I can do things to take care of myself so panic attacks are less likely, but if it’s not one thing it’s another:

I couldn’t sleep last night and now I’m tired. My project isn’t coming along like I’d hoped and now I’m cranky. The other people involved in my plans got sick and now they’re cancelled.

Life isn’t always sunny. Life gets rainy.

And no, that’s not fun. Rain on a day you were hoping for sun is frustrating and sad. It can seem like everyone in the world expects constant sunny positivity from you, and when you can’t manage it, there’s shame and guilt.

But it’s kind of magical when you decide to look at it like it’s largely outside of your control. What if today’s mini disaster blew in on the wind with the clouds? What if that same wind will blow it out again?

Maybe today you finally buy some rain boots so you can go for a walk without getting wet. Maybe today you learn that the beach is different in the rain, but still kind of cool. Or you could spend today curled in a ball, cursing the grey.

Either way, it’s still raining. Either way, you’re still lovable. You don’t have to like the weather, but it’s an option..

And the funny thing that happens, once you stop fighting your internal weather, is it becomes calmer. It turns out that so much of the problem was the expectation that things be different than they are, that everything would go smoothly.

Now when it rains, I tell myself I know that I will see the sun again. It might be two weeks, but it’ll happen. Probably sooner than I think.

When I feel anxiety creeping up I remind myself that we all have emotions that are difficult for us. That I will feel calm and happy again—probably pretty soon.

And then I have the space to make the best of the day I was given, not the one I ordered.

Some thoughts that help (think of them as affirmations, if you like):

1. This is the weather right now. I can’t change the weather, but I can take it into account to make myself more comfortable.

2. The sun always comes back. There are always days when things go right. This discomfort is temporary.

3. Everyone has hard days, even if not everyone talks about them. I’m still normal and lovable when my weather is rainy.

4. I’m allowed to feel disappointed that things aren’t going the way I wanted. I don’t have to be ready to make the best of it right away.

5. What if today were supposed to be rainy? What if this were exactly the right thing?

What helps you on days that things aren’t going according to plan?

Many people assume their debts cannot be remedied but after they apply
these three steps, all they get to say is whoa.People who are concerned
and desperate about their debt situation pose exceptionally tempting
prey to scammers. Many cons are as simple as companies asking for
payment up front and not delivering on the loan. By the way, U.S. and
Canadian companies legally cannot call you and promise you a loan then
ask for an advance fee before the transaction is completed [source:
Federal Trade Commission (FTC)].

Another
trick is to claim non-profit status. The FTC has exposed several
so-called non-profits, such as the National Consumer Council and Debt
Management Foundation Services, which were funneling funds to a
for-profit company. Given their deceptive names, it's not surprising
that unsuspecting people were willing to trust them.
The victims
of these scams fell deeper in debt and suffered a rise in interest
rates, as well as other penalties and damage to their credit. Some
people even went bankrupt after being misled by these fraudulent
companies. In addition, by hiding behind supposed non-profit status,
these organizations called numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry
to advertise their services. The FTC charged them with not only lying
about what their services would do, but also failing to disclose the
penalties and fees that would result.
Now that you're looking
over your shoulder, why don't you take the following precautionary steps
recommended by the FTC before taking out a loan with a finance company:

Be cautious of companies that pressure you into a plan or make any guarantees without looking into your specific needs.

Make an intensive research on the company and the services it
offers. It is better if it offers a wide range of options and education
on how to handle debt. (It also can't hurt to look up companies on the
Better Business Bureau.)

Contact your creditors and notify them if they will work with the company.

Read over the fine print: Make sure to carefully review the
agreement, ensuring that it outlines the finance company's plans and
its timeframe.

Before you begin making payment to the finance company, ensure that
your creditors have accepted the company's proposed plan. Until they
do, be sure to continue paying your bills as usual.

After you begin the program, keep a close watch on your statements and call the creditors to ensure they receive payments.

Although they aren't exactly scamming you, many finance
companies simply don't warn you about the excessive fees they charge.
These fees can add up so that you pile on even more debt. In a related
article on debt settlement, SmartMoney writer Aleksandra Todorova named a
few fees to watch out for:

A portion of the total debt (which could be up to 18%)

A portion of the amount you save (which can be around 25%)

Sign-up fees

Monthly fees (both service charges and flat fees)

The FTC also cautions against companies that pressure you to pay
"voluntary fees." One company that the FTC exposed, called AmeriDebt
Inc. collected about $200 million in hidden costs like these [source:
Federal Trade Commission].
Just as diet pills are usually too good
to be true, so are most debt consolidation offers. Remember, no new
loan is going to free you instantly from your debts. But like losing
weight, you can climb out of debt with good old-fashioned discipline.

There's more to getting a good rate than just staying accident-free...-Terence Loose

When it comes to auto insurance, we all want to get the right coverage
for the lowest premium. Unfortunately, shopping for auto insurance can
be easier said than done.
But don't give up on finding the best rate just yet. There are a variety of factors that could potentially save you money.
"The price you pay for your auto insurance can vary by hundreds of
dollars, depending on what type of car you have and the insurance
company you buy your policy from," says Loretta Worters, vice president
of the Insurance Information Institute (III).
Keep reading to learn more about other tricks to help lower your rate.

Tip #1 - Shop Companies

There's a reason why Black Friday and Cyber Monday are such popular
days for consumers: We all like to shop for a good deal. And while
shopping for auto insurance is not as exciting as finding the right
big-screen TV, it could result in a lot more savings.
But Worters
advises: "Don't shop by price alone. Ask friends and relatives for
their recommendations. Contact your state insurance department to find
out whether they provide information on consumer complaints by
company."

Tip #2 - Ask for Discounts

Instead of waiting to be offered discounts, ask about them. The fact
is, your insurance carrier may not know that you just got married or you
finally took that driver's education class - both of which could dig up
some savings for you.
What else could help you save? Here's a partial list of possible discounts:*

Low-Mileage Discount: applies when you drive less than 10,000 miles per year, according to III

Good Student Discount: generally requires a B average for a full-time student

Anti-Lock Brakes, Anti-Theft Device, or Air Bag Discount: usually must be factory installed

Driver Education Course Discount: applies when you complete a defensive driving course

Bundled Insurance Discount: applies when you have auto, home, or renter's insurance with the same company

Tip #3 - Check Your Credit

A good credit score isn't just ideal for buying a car or a house - in many states, it could also lower your auto insurance rate.
"Most insurers use credit information to price auto insurance
policies. Research shows that people who effectively manage their credit
have fewer claims," says Worters. "So establishing a solid credit
history can cut your insurance costs."
And while some states like
California, Hawaii, and Massachusetts do not allow insurance companies
to use credit-based insurance scores, most states do.
What does this
mean for you? Worters suggests paying your bills on time, only
obtaining credit you need, and keeping your credit balances low as ways
to improve your credit score.
Here are a few other tips and tricks to consider:

Get at least three quotes and compare rates, either over the phone or online.

Give the same information to all companies. This ensures a more accurate comparison.

Use rating companies such as A.M. Best Company and Standard & Poor's to check out a company's financial health.

Tip #4 - Consider Raising Your Deductible

If you file a claim, a deductible refers to the amount you pay before
your insurance policy covers it. If you have a higher deductible, your
insurance premium could be lower. And the potential for savings might
surprise you.
"Increasing your deductible from $200 to $500 could
reduce your collision and comprehensive coverage cost by 15 to 30
percent. Going to a $1,000 deductible can save you 40 percent or more,"
says Worters.
But remember, before increasing your deductible
payment, make sure that you have enough cash set aside to pay it in
case you do have to file a claim.

Tip #5 - Don't Over-Insure

If you lived in a 100-year-old shack, you probably wouldn't pay a lot
for home insurance, right? Same goes for an aging car, yet many people
neglect to drop coverage that they'll likely never use.
Specifically, Worters advises dropping collision and/or comprehensive
coverage - which protects your car in the event that it's damaged - if
you drive an older car.
"If your car is worth less than 10 times the premium, purchasing the coverage may not be cost-effective," she says.
But make sure to check the worth of your car before making this
decision, says Worters. You could find out your car's worth through
banks, auto dealers, or online with Kelley Blue Book.

Tip #6 - Lose Your Kid

No, no, we don't mean lose little Bobby or Sally at the mall or
Disneyland. We're talking about removing them from your auto insurance
policy if they've grown up, gone away to college, and only visit home
occasionally - i.e., they only drive your car on weekends or during
holiday vacations.
How can this help your auto insurance rate?
According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners'
(NAIC) website, if your child lives away at school - at least 100 miles -
and has less access to the insured vehicle, you may be able to take
advantage of insurance discounts.

Reverse Mortgages

The Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) is FHA's reverse mortgage
program, which enables you to withdraw some of the equity in your home.
The HECM is a safe plan that can give older Americans greater financial
security. Many seniors use it to supplement Social Security, meet
unexpected medical expenses, make home improvements and more. You can
receive additional free information about reverse mortgages in general
by contacting the National Council on Aging at (800) 510-0301 or
downloading their free booklet, "Use Your Home to Stay at Home,"
a guide for older homeowners who need help now. It is smart to know
more about reverse mortgages, and decide if one is right for you!

1. What is a reverse mortgage?
A reverse mortgage is a special type of home loan that lets you
convert a portion of the equity in your home into cash. The equity that
you built up over years of making mortgage payments can be paid to
you. However, unlike a traditional home equity loan or second mortgage,
HECM borrowers do not have to repay the HECM loan until the borrowers
no longer use the home as their principal residence or fail to meet the
obligations of the mortgage. You can also use a HECM to purchase a
primary residence if you are able to use cash on hand to pay the
difference between the HECM proceeds and the sales price plus closing
costs for the property you are purchasing.
2. Can I qualify for FHA's HECM reverse mortgage?
To be eligible for a FHA HECM, the FHA requires that you be a
homeowner 62 years of age or older, own your home outright, or have a
low mortgage balance that can be paid off at closing with proceeds from
the reverse loan, and you must live in the home. You
are also required to receive consumer information free or at very low
cost from a HECM counselor prior to obtaining the loan. You can find a HECM counselor online or by phoning (800) 569-4287.
3. Can I apply for a HECM even if I did not buy my present house with FHA mortgage insurance?
Yes. You may apply for a HECM regardless of whether or not you purchased your home with an FHA-insured mortgage.
4. What types of homes are eligible?
To be eligible for the FHA HECM, your home must be a single family
home or a 2-4 unit home with one unit occupied by the borrower.
HUD-approved condominiums and manufactured homes that meet FHA
requirements are also eligible.
5. What are the differences between a reverse mortgage and a home equity loan?
With a second mortgage, or a home equity line of credit, borrowers
must have adequate income to qualify for the loan, and they make
monthly payments on the principal and interest. A reverse mortgage is
different, because it pays you – there are no monthly principal and
interest payments. With a reverse mortgage, you are required to pay
real estate taxes, utilities, and hazard and flood insurance premiums.
6. Will we have an estate that we can leave to heirs?
When the home is sold or no longer used as a primary residence, the
cash, interest, and other HECM finance charges must be repaid. All
proceeds beyond the amount owed belong to your spouse or estate. This
means any remaining equity can be transferred to heirs. No debt is
passed along to the estate or heirs.
7. How much money can I get from my home?
The amount you may borrower will depend on:

Age of the youngest borrower

Current interest rate

Lesser of appraised value or the HECM FHA mortgage limit of $625,500 or the sales price; and

Initial Mortgage Insurance Premium--your choices are HECM Standard or HECM SAVER

In addition, the more valuable your home is, the older you are, and the
lower the interest rate, the more you can borrow. If there is more
than one borrower, the age of the youngest borrower is used to determine
the amount you can borrow. For an estimate of HECM cash benefits,
select the online calculator from the HECM Home Page. Many online reverse mortgage calculators can provide you with an estimate of the amount of funds you can borrow.
8. Should I use an estate planning service to find a reverse mortgage lender?
FHA does NOT recommend using any service that charges a fee for
referring a borrower to an FHA-approved lender. You can locate a
FHA-approved lender by searching online at www.hud.gov or
by contacting a HECM counselor for a listing. Services rendered by
HECM counselors are free or at a low cost. To locate a HECM counselor Search online or call (800) 569-4287 toll-free, for the name and location of a HUD-approved housing counseling agency near you
9. How do I receive my payments?
You can select from five payment plans:

Tenure- equal monthly payments as long as at least one borrower lives and continues to occupy the property as a principal residence.

Term- equal monthly payments for a fixed period of months selected.

Line of Credit- unscheduled payments or in installments, at times and in an amount of your choosing until the line of credit is exhausted.

Modified Tenure- combination of line of credit and scheduled monthly payments for as long as you remain in the home.

Modified Term- combination of line of credit plus monthly payments for a fixed period of months selected by the borrower.

10. What if I change my mind and no longer want the loan after I go to closing? How do I do this?

By law, you have three calendar days to change your mind and cancel the
loan. This is called a three day right of rescission. The process of
canceling the loan should be explained at loan closing. Be sure to
ask the lender for instructions on this process. Mortgage lenders
differ in the process of canceling a loan. You should ask for the
names of the appropriate people, phone numbers, fax numbers, addresses,
or written instructions on whatever process the company has in place.
In most cases, the right of rescission will not be applicable to HECM
for purchase transactions.

Have you wandered how great the possibilities of making it in life are if only you know how to obtain and use ideas in all fields of life.
Tips of creating a successful life.

As the famous saying goes"the most powerful tool in life is the ability to imagine'. Being able to imagine is one of the most powerful driving force to a successful life. For whatever the mind can imagine is obtainable.

Having the will power or determination to succeed.Albert Einstein once said 'if I have seen further than others,it's by standing upon the shoulders of giants..Life is full of challenges in every move one tries to make to improve on his status. So for you to keep on moving without distractions, keep this in mind"No situation is permanent"

You will need to cultivate the habit of being patient"If I have ever made valuable discoveries,it has been due to more patient attention than to any other talent.Patience brings out more

Find a source of inspiration or motivation.Leave the presence of people who try to underestimate your potentials.Such people can be hindrances in maximizing your abilities."Cultivate the I can do spirit".Never give up on an unsuccessful first attempt.

Humble yourself to learn from others as this would save you from making errors others have made.Mistakes can be avoided if only it's root is known.

Fight to create breakthroughs and embark on firm decision making.
