Seems like it just took forever to get our Icebox Intake for the Generation 3 Dodge Cummins converted to the new manufacturing process. It wasn’t all my fault but it had a lot to do with me asking them to build the new Gen 4 Intake first. Well that kinda through things out of whack and well dang it just took longer than we thought!

But in our hands now we have the new upgraded new Gen 3 Icebox Cold Air Intake for the 2003-2007 Dodge Cummins and it’s not Anodized Aluminum…..Nope. And it’s not powder coated steel either. So what the heck is it made with? We stepped up and decided to make them out of stainless steel.

You know really there wasn’t anything wrong with our original powder coated 16 gauge steel intakes except we wanted them made better and more consistent. We wanted the lids to be interchangeable and better fittings. So when we went to the new production facility we got to talking and they said “have you thought about anodized aluminum?” and we thought about it and thought that it was a good idea. But the process of building them and then having to ship them to a third party vendor to get them anodized. It just took more time for the turn around.

Then I really wasn’t entirely happy with the way the finish was holding up. It was good, really good…just not as good as I wanted. So I asked the production company what they suggested and then we started talking about Stainless Steel. And so we decided to give it a try with the new Gen 3. Next in line is the Gen 1 and then the Gen 2. After that the Gen 3 for the 6.7 and Gen 4′s will go Stainless.

I will share that this is a test and I reserve the right to make other changes if the feedback isn’t as I expect but right now everything looks really good for the Stainless. If you have any questions send us an email or give us a call.

Tonight we caught the Diane Sawyer news and her  inspiring”Made in America” story about the home being built in Bozeman Montana with every product in the home being a product that was made in America. You know this is really how we are going to make things better here in the USA, by buying products made in the USA. And this is how we are going to put America back to work and something that we should have been doing a long time ago.

Icebox Intakes is just a small company but from the beginning we have insisted upon making our Cold Air Intakes here in the USA. We know that we could get them made in China much cheaper and make more profit in the long run but to us that is not as important as supporting our Country and keeping the work here in the United States.

We are actively searching for vendor sources for some of our hardware that we are currently using that is not being made in the US and are confident that we will find good sources after watching Diane Sawyer’s report. It is really exciting to know that we are making a difference and we are going to apply this to other everyday products that we use everyday in our lives. How about you?

A customer contacted us from Arizona recently about one of our Dodge Cummins Gen 1 intakes and although we were still waiting on our new Gen 1 Icebox A.I.R. Series intakes to be completed I knew immediately that is what would work best for him. When you see this unique 1990 Gen 1 you will know why. And below Robert will tell his story about how he came about building this unique “one of a kind” Gen 1 Dodge.

Here is Robert’s story about how he acquired this unique 1990 Dodge Cummins:

Charlie,  I would be happy to answer questions about the “POWER WAGON” which is just a nickname I had for the truck when I first bought it because I thought that the truck was a kind of remake of the earlier “Job Rated” POWER WAGON’s of yesteryear.  When Dodge introduced the new Cummins turbo diesel model trucks in 1989, I knew I had to have one, and placed the order for my truck in October of 1989. 

My goal was to order the most heavy duty truck available with NONE of the weakening extras such as air conditioning, fancy trim packages, etc.  My truck arrived at the Dodge/Jeep dealer in Sierra Vista, Arizona sometime during the spring of 1990.  I was attending the Law Enforcement Academy at the time and was unable to pick the truck up until June of 1990.  The older Dodge trucks had some things on my truck, so I knew I had to change mine if I was going to be satisfied with it.  The interior was what I considered “new age” cheap and needed an entire replacement.  I ordered the truck as a W-350 CB/CH (cab and chassis) since I knew it would be easy to set a tough flatbed on the truck.

 Detroit hadn’t built a grille for some 20 years or more at the time so I started thinking about what the truck needed to bring it up to speed.  My old high school friend Richard Strob had a race car fabrication shop in Tucson, AZ. at the time (now defunct) and I thought that was a great place to start.  I made the aluminum door panels and Richard made the dash board and grille.  Pro Tech Aluminum truck bodies built the bed that I had designed, and I set a new 12000 pound Warn winch on the front of it all and the truck was starting to take on the sinister look of a serious 4X4. 

The steering column came later and I used an Ididit column with flaming river and Borgeson components as well as a Budnik steering wheel.  Under the hood of an old 12 valve needs little change to be pure so I kept changes to a minimum with 25 HP injectors by DDP and a jet hot coated exhaust manifold.  I also went with an aluminum Ron Davis radiator and overflow bottle.   My starter and alternator are made by “Mean Green” which float fore and aft on roller bearings.  I also chose a “Lifeline” battery.  I shortened the exhaust to just behind the cab with a straight pipe.  My seats and sun visors were covered in black leather by Marlins saddle shop in Douglas, Arizona.  3″ Simpson seat belts top that off. 

In 2008 I started a complete body off restoration to get what I had in show condition.  That venture took over a year.  The “body off” included all new Energy suspension body and leaf spring bushings and a 3 inch lift by Arizona Spring.  I also put new seals/gaskets on my NP205 transfer case and twin-sticked it with an “off-road design” kit.  I had the truck media blasted to be sure to get any problems, but the truck has been in southern AZ. its whole life and it really didn’t need the media blasting very much.  I bought lots of new rubber where needed and wound up powder coating the 5 wheels, and front and rear bumpers.  New Good Year LT 265/75R16 Duratracs fit the theme well.  I also included new Rancho RS9000XL 9 speed shocks. 

This build would not be complete without the help of Dan the gear man at Quad 4X4 in Roberts, Montana.  He built my NV4500HD “Torque King” 5 speed and has sent me numerous “Kits” to upgrade my axles (Dana 60 front, Dana 70 rear with factory Power locker) into a “premium Timken” bearing equipped, made in USA truck!!  I searched hard for upgrades for my truck, which admittedly is more of a garage queen than anything else anymore.  Our Country just doesn’t make a lot of these parts anymore.  My latest addition is an Icebox Cold Air Intake (made in the USA) which fits my theme for the truck perfectly.  I don’t often find the quality I require for the truck, so additions are slow to happen.

So as you can see I knew that our new Anodized Aluminum Icebox A.I.R. Series was going to be the perfect fit for Robert so I shared with him that we were just getting the new prototype built and then I would have to approve it before it would go into production. This process took about 6-8 weeks from the time that Robert contacted me but he patiently waited and received the very first of the new Icebox A.I.R for the Gen 1. In fact it was the very first of the entire Icebox A.I.R series.

Today I was able to test fit the new Anodized Aluminum Icebox A.I.R. into a 2009 Dodge Cummins. This was our first install of the production model of this new Icebox Cold Air Intake and it went just awesome! It fit just like a glove, just like it was supposed to. Here are some photos of this first production install.

It’s been a long time in the making to get our Icebox Intakes into production with the Anodized Aluminum finish and the machined sensor mounts so this is the next step into the evolution of Icebox Intakes. And here is our plan for the future. We now have in the new Icebox A.I.R. Series the Gen 1, the 6.7L and the Gen 4 completed. We are currently working on the Gen 2 and after it is finished we will have the Gen 3 next. When all of these are complete we will be ordering additional lids in beautiful colors and initially will have Blue, Red and Black as lid color options or upgrades. Then we start working on getting our current Duramax and Ford intakes done in the new Anodized Aluminum. After that we will be working on adding new intakes to our line up.
